Best PC RPG Ever??
I LOVE RPG's, but I haven't played too many. Diablo II was awesome, and I still play it sometimes. I think a lot of votes would go for Lineage2 (I think that's an RPG?) but I've never played it cause im too cheap to pay for play. Anyways, looking for some recommendations!
|
I'm not one for Online PC RPG's, so I vote KOTOR. (Knights of the Old Republic)
|
KOTOR I and II were both excellent games. I thought the game's system was executed very well, a nice combination of D&D and Star Wars. Those are both highly recommended by me.
Classic PC RPGs would be Baldur's Gate I and II and their expansion packs. Both are very solid Forgotten Realms setting D&D games, most definitely the best of that realm. These games also recieve big recommendations from me, despite the graphical level that they exist on - they're 3/4-view top-down RPGs. Whattya want for nothin'. |
Diablo 2 or KOTOR. Both games are very enjoyable, but KOTOR's mechanics are very very fun. Unfortunately, KOTOR I and II runs a bit slow on the xbox, so as long as you have a good pc, you probably won't have the most enjoyment.
|
Are we voting for offline or online?
Online, I'd give it to World of Warcraft. 6 million users worldwide and soon expanding into Spain and Mexico, this game is ridiculously popular and successful, for good reason. Graphically, it's very impressive and the presentation -- which in my opinion sets it off from other MMOs -- is outstanding. Well done Blizzard. If we're discussing offline, I'd throw my vote for Fable: The Lost Chapters. Fable fucking rocks and borders on simulation rather than RPG. There's so much stuff to do, but not overwhelmingly so much so you get lost in what you were originally supposed to do. The game gives you freedom on a linear track, which actually works out great. It's graphically impressive, the combat is enjoyable, and the NPCs are what really set this game apart. Rock on, Lionhead Studios. |
Diablo II definately has gameplay in the bag. Diablo did after all resurrect the near dead RPG genre in 1997.
|
It's a shame I never played Diablo, the closest thing I ever played to Diablo was Nox, a cheap rip-off, which still had it's moments...

I'll have to chip in my vote for Diablo II, as well. The only other game that sucked me in that badly was Ragnarok, which I still play to this day. Unfortunately, I lost my Diablo II disc. ;_;

Even though Diablo 2 didn't have much of a story, I just spent so much time gaming it, that it gets my vote.

D2 loses its fun when you try to spend a night getting to level 80 and then grinding out for MF or whatever.
Grinds ruin games. Thus I suggest: KOTOR |
Ultima VII, because it is awesome with a side of awesome.
|
Morrowind actually gets my vote. The combat sucks ass (sup point/click), but there's so many different ways you can do it that it's not terrible. Plus, it's so open-ended that you can literally beat the main quest in 7 and a half minutes. :tpg:
The expansions I also recommend, ESPECIALLY Tribunal. That one is so awesome. |
Ok, I'm gonna go off on a limb here and say Daggerfall.
You could spend days upon days walking around a single town... what more do you want. Oh yeah, and Diablo 2, but SPECIFICALLY HARDCORE mode. I don't like the 'you cannot die' kind of thing |
Diablo 2 still has a special place in my heart. Not so much the game itself, but when me and my friends would stay up till 4am chilling and playing.
One of those things you dont really miss till its gone. |

I also liked Ultima Underworld a lot. It was huge at the time. |
Planescape: Torment and/or Fallout 1 and 2. There really is no discussion, both games snow Elder Scrolls, Diablo, and everything else. Superior storylines and game systems. Hardcore nostalgics don't keep bringing these two up for no reason.
MMO, I vote City of Heroes/Villains. It tosses out all the needless Everquest baggage and questionable design elements that plague World of Warcraft. No loot, no 40 man instanced dungeons, and no having to wait until level 40 for a horse - you're flying in just a few day's worth of effort. No time sinks are a good thing. |
i have to say D2 lol i actually just played last night lol.....Ya either D2 or Ragnarok Online....i dont know why RO but it just so fun the music scenery monsters maps everything in it is just awesome. So D2 and RO for me.

The more I hear about Fallout, the more I want to vote for that and Nox. Stop tempting me! |
Monkey King, why vote Planescape : Torment, and not vote Baldur's gate...
Planescape is so inferior in every way. |
Monkey King knows where it's at. Though I haven't played all the way through them, Fallout 1 and 2 and Planescape: Torment are definitely the coolest RPGs I've seen on the PC.
CileGray, while Baldur's Gate was definitely good, its story wasn't nearly as engaging as Torment, and it wasn't as open-ended of a game. In Torment, you could really choose what kind of role you wanted to play, and the game was playable that way. If you pump up your charisma stat and say the right things, you can avoid almost all the combat in the game or if you wanted to go kill stuff, you could do that as well, which is something that a lot of RPGs neglect (though KOTOR was one of the few to allow this duality and did it well). Also, an item of interest for anyone who has Dungeon Siege, there's a mod you can download that has a complete remake of Ultima 5, found here: http://www.u5lazarus.com/ They essentially recreate everything from the 1988 classic, but it's much more accessible as a game mod. For anyone who remembers the game, or who'd like to see what made Ultima the grandfather of PC RPGs, try it out. |

Bleh I won Planescape : Torment at a UT tournament, played it for a few hours and got bored of the whole "you're a living dead" shit... but maybe that's because I was the age that I was...too young
|
My favorite RPGs have been Diablo I/II, KOTOR, and Fable. Those 3 are the 3 best RPGs I have ever played on any system, and I wish more games would be made like them (if only Diablo III would get announced I would be a very happy man!).
|
Lands of Lore : The Throne of Chaos is one of the best RPG's ever made. I'm also a fan of the german-made RPG's Gothic 1 and 2 they are more recent though.
|
Y's (if those counts) and err you guys might not heard of this... but Far Land Tatics. >.>
|
Hard to define THE best RPG of all time - i think it doesn't exist because there are too many good games out there that have to be praised and loved :D
Just to listen up a few: - Gothic I & II - Final Fantasy (VII) - Lands of Lore II - Fallout I & II - Might & Magic Series (especially IV-VI) And many many more like Fable, KotOR, Baldur's Gate...... |
You have good taste sir Xamuel.
|
You think so? Well thanks a lot dude, i see you like LOL as well!
I just finished the Throne of Chaos a few weeks ago, after all these years i've played Lands of Lore II (Luther and Belial just own!) i thought it would be time to get my hands on the the first part, it's really a cool game! :) Now i have started playing III but it isn't THAT fascinating...but it's so nice and cool to come back to old places! Too bad Lands of Lore isn't very mainstream-like, EA really abandoned the license :( I'm also glad you like GOTHIC, because since it's a german game i thought it isn't so popular in the USA for example. Hopefully Gothic³ will rock like hell as well :edgarrock: |
Try out these franchises and see how they play (I heard they were really good)
Ultima 1-7 (the later ones suck) Might and Magic 1-7 (ditto) Wizardry Computer Gamig World calls them the "holy trinity" of PC RPGs. |
I haven't tried out the Ultima Series except for IX Ascension. I can't remember why i haven't finished it - i guess the world was just too empty for me (Gothic for example has a very lively world!) - and i played Ultima Online for over a year on a freeshard...man, the good old times :(
--- Might & Magic: I & II: Haven't played them yet and i guess i'll never do, the graphics are just too bad, you can only save the game at the inn and there's no automap! III: I got the Might & Magic Trilogy (III-V) @ Ebay so i can finally finish The Islands of Terra, it's really damn hard! IV-V: Besides VI my most favourite games of the M&M series, you can play months with these games! VI: How should i describe it? OMG I JUST LOVE IT! Okay, the graphics are bad, the (german) voice acting is horrible, but the world is really big and it's so fun and it's fantastic to discover the world! Oh well, i think i just typed too much :) VII: I bought the game when it was released but didn't play it for too long, because on most CDs there was no music pressed - and i think M&M is living from it's music. I was too lazy to ask 3DO for a replacement...well guess i'm a bit too late for that now, since 3DO doesn't exist any longer :D I wish someone could arrange the Soundtrack for me (i've ripped the OST for M&M VI - The Mandate of Heaven already, hopefully it will spread all over GFF) or else i'll have to buy a budget version of VII. --- And Wizardy? Maybe i'll give it a change sooner or later :) |

Yes of course i love the Heroes of Might & Magic series, i just didn't mention it because i don't really count the HoMM Games as RPGs. II & III i think were definately the best and i just hope the new HoMM V will bring back good old times!

I'd see a "PC" RPG as one that was disigned for the platform, not a port, so I can't in good conscience consider KOTOR as a PC RPG. In addition to the obvious Fallout, Planescape, and Diablo I&II, my personal list would include all the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate I&II--especially II, and Icewind Dale I and II--which no one has mentioned), and, of course, Deus Ex, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned. Deus Ex was a rare first-person 3D RPG, and the only good thing that ever came out of Ion Storm (ironically, from the branch that didn't have the giant office). I found its levelling system to be particularly innovative. The Icewind series was the Infinity answer to Diablo, but with much more emphasis on story. Even though it was mindless hack n' slash gameplay-wise, I liked the way you were able to develop your character if you so chose by writing a biography and choosing a voice. I still remember one of the character taunts: "Step right up, I've got plenty of death for everybody!" |
Diablo 2 was just awesome at the time, and lived up to the hype in every aspect except perhaps graphics.
NoX was Westwood's attack on Diablo, and it was really good in my opinion. It's multiplayer PvP was even better than Diablo 2's. Baldur's Gate 2 was epic at the time. Freedom Force is fun for those who enjoy superheroes RPGs. Especially putting in well-known heroes and giving them overpowered moves. |

I played BG partway through, and Planescape partway through, before my old HD died. I reinstalled BG and found it completely boring to play through again, so I Ebay'd it. On the other hand, I still have PS:T and plan to install it again in the coming months and finish it. Now, if we were to go with best series ever, then Might & Magic, hands-down... Although VI as a stand-alone title is definitely up there. |
I have the first 7 Wizardries that came with a torrent I downloaded, if you want those. I am looking for the LOL series...
|
Yeah I can't wait for Gothic 3 Xamuel, and you have Throne of Chaos and it works on an XP system?!!!?
|
Best RPG on the PC is the gold box series of AD&D games that game out way back in the late 80s/ early 90s. There were several set in both the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance worlds.
These were the 4 set in the Forgotten Realms world. The cool thing if you really wanted to do it, was that you could basically grow your characters from game to game, as they would transfer over. The final one Pool of Darkness was an intense game from start to finish. Pool of Radiance Curse of the Azure Bonds Secret of the Silver Blades Pool of Darkness Then there were the Dragonlance games. Champions of Krynn Death Knights of Krynn Dark Queen of Krynn These were loosely based on the novels of Weis and Hickman. It was awesome to be able to explore the world that they had described in the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy. Graphically they can't hold a candle to the games of today, however storywise, and immersion, as well as the worlds they explored have yet to be matched on the PC to this day. Post SSI gold box games that were good as well are Fallout, Planescape Torment, and Fallout 2. |

My favorite PC RPG is by far KOTOR 1, not only PC RPG but one of my favorite games of all time.
But I have to say another one I loved which was [b]Baldur's Gate 2[b/]. I can't even imagine how much time I spent playing this game. I don't have much patience for MMORPGs because after a month or two I think it becames repetitive, and I don't have fun with those hack and slash RPGs since Diablo 1. |

I think we pretty much covered all the bases with Fallout, Planescape, and KOTOR, but I also think the Black & White series, while it has a lot of different gameplay aspects, also plays like an RPG, it's jsut that the "character building" in the traditional sense has been turned into a more fluid, more interactive way of doing things. |
I'd say HoMM III, but as far as "pure" RPGs, I'd have to go with M&M VII, absolute pure gaming magic :P
Last year I finally got around to playing Planescape: Torment after I heard it had a story that rivaled Xenogears'. But oh my...the interface was SOO frustrating and eventually I couldn't stand it anymore. I quit playing at a segment that seemed to be endless fetch quest after endless fetch quest. Not for me, I guess. |
First post, oh well.
As far as offline PC RPGs go, I would have to say that Fable is indeed the shit. It has incredible replay value, and the actual gameplay system is damn good. As far as MMORPGs, I personally play Final Fantasy XI Online, and I honestly like it. As far as I've heard, World of Warcraft is a good play too. But if we talk free MMORPGs, Guild Wars by far. It seems to give a slight feeling of the Diablo II system. |
What can change the nature of a man?
I consider Planescape: Torment the best RPG... not that I have played many games. Torment had, however, many problems that made it crash every two minutes... were it not for the fans that made several fixes to it...
So much dialogue! I know precisely *that* is what chased away many potential players... but what are you going to do? :( Fallout 1 was great too... what a character The Master was! |

Anachronox is good as well, but of course no one has played it. |
I'm going to go with Morrowind. Including Tribunal and Bloodmoon. This caters to many fantasies I've had as a kid and I was able to embrace upon these fantasies in one large island called Vvardenfell.
|
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Oblivion yet . . . Anyhow, Planescape: Torment was an amazing game. I never beat it, nor did I get very far, but I could tell from the few hours that I played that it was a masterpiece. I should really try out those Fallout games some day.

Anyone got anything on KOTOR 2? I have the first and didn't hear a whole lot about the second one. |
I know KOTOR II... don't know KOTOR I, though.
I guess what you want to know is on the realm of "what makes it different", right? Not having played the first one, I can say that the KOTOR II ending wasn't very good. Of course, that's just an opinion. Also, it has a few bugs, but not as many as to make it annoying. There're a lot of references to the first one, and the story seems to be very related to that of KOTOR. |
I'll go ahead and jump on the small Baldur's Gate bandwagon. For pure RPG'ness, BG, it's sequel and all expansions are unbelievable. I have not played Torment, I should give it a shot.
For Action/RPG, Diablo and Diablo II would be the winners for me. Divine Divinity is up there as well. |
Oblivion, no contest. Besides that, Diablo II would be the next, with Planescape Torment following. I never beat Planescape, but played the game beginning to middle a few times, but for some reason I never seemed to get any further. *shrug*
|
You have to mention Neverwinter Nights when you talk about pc rpgs, it has great writing, not to mention the huge community support.
btw, nwn 2 on the way :) Anachronox was a great game. the talking planet was one of the most creative/original ideas I've seen in an rpg |
TES III: Morrowind has been the best for me. With the enhanced combat mod + better bodies mod on...I was another person in that game. Oblivion will be a wet dream for me once I have a better video card :revolution: :ashamed:

I'd probably go with Starcraft, World of Warcraft, or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Sorry, but Starcraft is not an RPG and you could put a little detail into the post.

Of course this is just the gameplay aspects of it, and only what I've experienced and maybe the story which I really have no idea about at the moment except for right at the beginning, will make up for what I think is missing from a *best* RPG. Now to the actual thread, best PC RPG for me would have to be Diablo I/II. Once I started on these games I just couldn't stop, especially with Diablo II. So simple and yet so addictive. |
I quite enjoyed KOTOR I & II. I couldn't really get into Diablo 2, might have another crack at it some time. And as for Oblivion, it is good but, some of the NPC dialog is shoddy at best.
|
While Diablo II and Morrowind were fantastic of their own right, I'm going to tenatively give this title to Oblivion. I normally don't get too compulsive about games, but Oblivion has just captivated me more than I can explain in words. The gameplay, the graphics, the freedom..... it's truly everything I could want in an RPG. It's impossible to give a conclusive judgement after 4 days, but everything I've seen so far makes me believe that this is the one.
|
I'll go with Fate, if retro questing and hack-and-slash games are given consideration in the RPG genre.
|
Thread closed for necromancy.
Besides, anybody who argues against Fallout clearly hasn't played the game. 69! LOL! |
