Where do you buy CDs?

What is the best online shop?

Amazon? CDJapan? Jigsco? Nippon-Export?

List your favourite.

And... are there any shop that sells used stuffs? I know only Mandarake and JPQueen.

Radical Jul 20, 2006 05:12 PM

When I buy CDs online, I get them from eBay. I might stop doing this, though, since the last order I made was for 2 CDs. After about 4 months, I've only received one of them, and the seller isn't responding to my messages. The upside is huge variety and good prices, though.

Kairyu Jul 20, 2006 05:37 PM

I got a few videogame soundtracks through ebay. Though I hardly consider it my main source (more like last resort, depending on the seller.)
But lately I've been picking up new soundtracks from cdjapan, gamemusic, vgmworld, and animenation. So far they're all reliable and have decent selections :).

Kaleb.G Jul 20, 2006 06:48 PM

I always check VGM World first, then Play-Asia. They tend to have the most obscure albums. After that, CDJapan, Otaku.com, and GameMusic.com. AnimeNation hardly has any selection, so they're only good for classic popular albums like Final Fantasy, etc. I only check eBay as a last resort for getting a particular album, as it's more difficult to deal with.

Sometimes I'll also hit up Chudah's Corner or Slightly Dark to see if I can buy some albums off of someone.

el jacko Jul 20, 2006 07:20 PM

I've always been a fan of Cocoebiz, but that was before they split their "shopping" side into VGMWorld. Whenever I ordered there I always got a little personal message from Kaori on my order form, which I thought was pretty cool.

I haven't ordered a CD of VGM in a long time, though.

Rydia Jul 20, 2006 08:23 PM

My first choice is usually CDJapan. I've ordered several soundtracks from there, but I've recently discovered that Otaku.com carried a few that I needed for a while.

It's always the "Thank you very much", but if you are lucky you get something different like "I hope you enjoy the CDs". Oh and always the happy face. Almost her trademark.

I usually check there first, but I also buy from CDJapan. Godai and bishop order from amazon japan. but I don't have any clue how to order with all those japanese words. Finally, I may order from yesasia.com SOMETIMES. But that's usually for asian movie soundtracks (and movies as well).

Ashram Jul 21, 2006 04:21 AM

CDJapan because of the speed and prices, although I have bought some cd's from other shops when a disc is not available anymore.

Iczer-One Jul 21, 2006 08:10 AM

Omg... Otaku.com shippings are very expensive!!!

"$10 for the first item and $5 per item after that."

It's madness! @.@

Shoops Jul 21, 2006 01:12 PM

I bought some videogame soundtrack from play-asia, some asian movies from yesasia.

bishop743 Jul 21, 2006 01:31 PM

I used to use CDJapan when buying music but now I mainly use AmazonJP. As far as prices and shipping costs go, both are about the same, but where Amazon wins out is the shipping speeds. So, that's why I've moved to AmazonJP. VGMWorld is another great place because it gets a lot of exclusive deals that I like. I also use Ebay and Yahoo Japan Auctions every now and then too.

I've never used Play-Asia, Gamemusic or Otaku, so I can't comment on any of those.

seanne Jul 21, 2006 01:58 PM

As I mainly buy second-hand I tend to get most of my stuff from Yahoo! Japan Auctions, as well as from people selling on the forums at Soundtrack Central, Chudah's Corner and Slightly Dark. And for new releases, VGM World, play-asia and amazon.co.jp are all good stores and at least one of them can usually get you what you're looking for.

I also used to use eBay a lot in the past, but these days I really only do so when someone from one of the above mentioned forums, or when someone I know is trustworthy, has something up for auction. To go and manually search that place for proper gamemusic these days is like searching for a needle is a... well - a swamp. And a real stinky one at that.

sabbey Jul 22, 2006 08:27 AM

I shop mostly at CDJapan, VGMworld, Play-Asia and YesAsia for imports. For domestic CDs, Amazon, CDUniverse and some different soundtrack specialist stores like, Intrada and Screen Archives. There's also Ebay/Half for rarer or OOP CDs. All are recommended...

I also use a service called, Soundtrackers. It's one guy running an email newsletter, but he can get anything I want and at much better prices than most places. So, anymore I just order most if not all the CDs I want from him and send payment at the beginning of each month. Works rather well! :)

Uh... it's very interesting... can you give me his contact, please? :)

P.S. I checked this Screen Archives.. the prices are really good, but are all the soundtracks originals and imported from Japan? Aren't them from Taiwan or domestic US?

OOP usually stands for Out Of Print CDs. As I said before I use ebay to grab certain OOP soundtracks. Heh, I guess I forgot to mention that part =p.

Which part? The OOP acronym or the fact that Half.com is part of Ebay but is not a bidding site? In either case, Kairyu is correct... :)

Sure, I can either forward the latest newsletter to you or PM you the email address so you can be added to it. It's very much worth looking into at the very least.

I assume they are originals, but don't know for certain. I don't buy imports from them since it's much cheaper buying them online at the importers...

I guess you can email and ask them, but they're really more good for the regular releases, limited editions, promos and whatnot.

Both parts. I understand now, thank you!

I've only got a few, which I've purchased on Amazon. Next time I'm looking for one, I'll be keeping this thread in mind, as I've never heard of these other places.

sabbey Nov 7, 2006 04:40 PM

Animenation now, it seems, has putrid selection and prices. Bummer! Used to be my first and only choice in buying such CDs... :(

Basil Nov 7, 2006 05:11 PM

I've bought music from VGMWorld and eBay. I only made one purchase of three CDs on VGMWorld, however, but nowadays I don't buy as much VGM as I used to.

I got an order of these CDs from VGMWorld a while back:

Mario Story Original Soundtrack
Mario Tennis 64 Original Soundtrack
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Orchestrations

sabbey Nov 7, 2006 06:30 PM

How's the Mario Story CD in comparison to the Paper Mario album. Might be buying it next month...

MrSatan Nov 7, 2006 08:30 PM

yesasia.com, free shipping for orders bigger than $50

Ehh, pretty much the same as the American print, actually. The only differences between the two are the cover & disc artwork, and the track titles. I could be wrong on something though.

cubed Nov 7, 2006 10:03 PM

I'm getting those 3 OSTs as soon as I get money :D

Just ordered Lost Child Side A and Side B from vgmworld. And I have plenty of DVDs and games to buy lately............

xMxEdGaRx Nov 8, 2006 06:11 AM

CDJapan, fast shipping and excellent services!

Yes but full price <.<;;

cubed Nov 8, 2006 05:09 PM

... The price are the same everywhere... or you meant the shipping ? I didn't see any big difference with any other store. 1$ or 2 more won't kill you anyway.

bishop743 Nov 13, 2006 01:16 PM

I made my first order at Play-Asia last week. I purchased the Armored Core Nexus and Last Raven soundtracks. Since I wasn't in a huge rush to get them, I opted for Airmail shipping (which doesn't have tracking but is insured) instead of EMS or Courier. I have to say that, after receiving my albums today, I'm very satisfied with the transaction. Not only that, they included a $5 coupon which I can use on any future order that is $50 or more. That was pretty cool, as AmazonJP has never done that for me.

I also have the Pink Sweets OST on order there as well and I'm confident that transaction will go well too. I want that album ASAP though, so I went with EMS shipping. And I'll be using my coupon on it as well. :)

I'll definitely order from Play-Asia again.

sabbey Nov 13, 2006 11:33 PM

Yeah, it looks like Play-Asia has lowered their shipping cost. Earlier this year standard Airmail cost me $10, while the other month it only cost $4. Good deal, might be using them more as a result...

Than again, you can get free shipping at YesAsia! ;)

CD Japan or Otaku. I find Otaku has some music CD Japan no longer carries and a little cheaper too.

For you VGM fans, hopefully you have checked out loading GameMusic.com clearance sale on a variety of VGM. Not trying to spam/advertise, but really worth looking into and checking weekly as they seem to add stuff all the time. Maybe they are going out of business?? Not sure.

Sorcerer88 Aug 17, 2009 02:53 AM

I love cdbaby.com, it's a publisher for independent titles, offers non-drm mp3s etc. it's not quite video-game specific, but they do have some video-game like music. And there is a LOT there that's worth listening, jazz, (contemporary) classical music etc. you should check out Project, it's a fantastic jazz group. here's one of their pieces on youtube.

Hamu-Sumo Aug 17, 2009 03:46 AM

Usually Play-Asia is my first destination while looking for VGM. Also I'm very satisfied with Amazon.co.jp. Some weeks ago I ordered two CDs and the way Japan -> Germany was done within a week (but to be honest the shipping cost was expensive enough).

ZiggyGo Aug 17, 2009 08:31 AM

My go-to store is either CDJapan (for most releases), Play Asia (for Cave releases), and VGMWorld (for Supersweep releases). I rarely use Amazon, because their shipping for international is automatically EMS and I find their charge for EMS to be more expensive than that of CDJapan. I usually get FedEx or UPS for Play Asia as it only takes 4 days, but the price is quite high as well.
