What is your favorite commonly used invention?
 

There are a lot of great inventions out there, but I'm telling you, air conditioning is the best. I couldn't imagine living in a house without one when the heat gets up there in the 90's/100's. Especially me since I'm naturally pretty immune to the cold and get hot insanely easy. If you are hot, it doesn't matter what you do. You can't be comfortable.

The remote control. This is easily my favourite. Unless in order to choose the RC, I in turn have to choose the TV instead, seeing as the RC would be redundant with out it.

Way to much to think about at this time of night.

electricity is clearly the best invention of all time as without it everything I need and want becomes useless (like videogames, and air conditioning)

electricity is a naturally occuring phenomena.

I like fingernail clippers and would probably go nuts without them.

Does the toilet count? It'd be really ew without them.

I know what you mean, I'm pretty much the same.

I never had AC in my house tho so I must say that a fan is what I use the most. Winter or summer, it's always on.

I would definately have to say AIR CONDITIONING!!!!

I can definitely live without the AC. Hot weather is something I've gotten used to over the years.
Does a laptop count as a single invention? If not I think another item I can't seem to live without is the mighty pen. I seem to be writing things down more than ever.

Telecommunications. the telephone. i have it to thank for quite alot.

Music. There are so many things that I would have failed to create, grasp, or do if it there was no music.

Um I'm going to have to go with my glasses. I wonder why people with bad vision didn't all die out (say, like, in a war) until these things were invented. I cannot read the text on my 20in monitor from more than 6 inches away without my glasses.

Glasses. If it weren't for these things I'd be half-blind and miserable.

Both the computer and eyeglasses.

The computer because it obviously provides entertainment in so much ways. A hybrid of music, the internet, reading, playing games, etc.

Eyeglasses because I would probably be legally blind without them, and would be reduced to lying in bed all day from the lack of being able to go anywhere.

It's never really that hot over here so generally no house air conditioning. Even abroad I hardly turn them on.

Anyway, er is this favourite household appliance or something? What about stuff like vaseline? Moisturiser? Do they count? I'm lost.

I think I would have to go for glasses.

I would say the computer. I really can't imagine how long some assignments will be without one!

The computer has made communication and accessing information convenient for me. If there's something I'm curious about or if I need some information, I can access the internet without visiting a library or looking through a phonebook. I'm also able to communicate and share information with family and friends easily.

I'd have to say the computer, which I use on an almost daily basis. Sure, I could survive without one, but I'm so used to it that it'd take a lot of stuff happening for me to not use them (like a power outage, followed by a war or something).

I'm gonna have to go with the piston-combustible engine. Without it I'd be walking to work everyday.

The computer is another one but most of you have already mentioned that.

Microwave. My ability to eat food would be greatly diminished without this wonderful invention. I screw up about half the things I try to make on the stove and oven, so I try and avoid those when possible.

AC is nice, but my current apartment doesn't haven't, and neither did one of my houses as a kid, so I've learned how to get by sitting in front of a fan.

Parents. They make me food and they buy me things.

Meh, I guess I can say the microwave/oven. There is no way you can screw something up, unless you put it in for too long. It is especially handy when you have a timer. OH MAN, its awesome!

Real props for George Westinghouse. Edison was pimping DC tranmission: lots of power loss over large distances. Westinghouse brought us alternating current, allowing electricity to be transmitted over vast distances with little power loss. Our entire grid is dependant on AC.

Glasses/contact lenses - they let me see further than 30 cm in front of my face. I can't imagine having to live without them.

The blanket. Heaters are nice, but enough blankets can replace a heater. Also portability has merits too.

We have central air in my apartment, but I never turn it on. About a week ago, my roommate came back from Milwaukee, and wanted to kick my ass for not turning on the air. I just sat around playing Makai Kingdom when it was hot, but I didn't realize how hot it was until my roommate said something. According to the thermostat, it was 103F.

I can stand the heat, but those cold January/Febuary days really get under my skin.

My second favorite is probably either the guitar or the piano, for being pretty much the key instruments in the music I listen to...

and maybe the violin.

It'd probably have to the the computer. It's a source of never-ending entertainment and a great tool for research or communications. On the other hand, it's helped to contribute to a lack of me going outside as much as I used to (the stifling heat notwithstanding)...

In terms of the most usful inventions, though, I suppose the answer would be different.

the book. without this little collection of paper and scribbles, modern life would never have come about. followed closely by the lightbulb.

I'd have to say that I use the computer a lot. I'm a WoW addict and well without the computer I would not be able to feed into my nasty habit..

The internet makes the world much less bigger... and more interesting.

Everything is claimed to cause cancer, I'm sure milk will suddenly cause cancer down the road. Smoke detectors emit gamma rays and they are still cool.
