New Zealand Story Revolution (Kiwi Kraze)

Originally mentioned in the Bubble Bobble Revolution instruction manual last year (which was a million years ago), PANTS EXPANDING screens finally surface!

Rising Star Games today announced that The New Zealand Story, one of the most distinctive and original platform games of the 1980s, will be the next title in the firm's Revolution series of updates to classic videogames for the Nintendo DS.

New Zealand Story Revolution will be an accurate re-telling of the timeless 1988 original. Starring Tiki, a plucky Kiwi bird, the gameplay revolves around him rescuing his kidnapped friends from the clutches of a nefarious leopard seal. The setting for each of the game’s levels will remain untouched although the layouts will be remixed and re-jigged to provide fresh challenges. Graphically, the game will benefit from an overhaul that updates New Zealand Story's visuals whilst retaining the clean lines of its arcade ancestor.

Martin Defries, Rising Star's C.O.O. offered: "With New Zealand Story Revolution, we're not going to be taking away anything that made the original such a charming classic. Its delicate balance will be carefully re-created and with the new features we've included, New Zealand Story Revolution will be an even more manic platform adventure than the original."

New Zealand Story Revolution will bring many more additions and innovations, details of which are to be announced as the game nears its late 2006 release date.
Words.

This is so awesome, I loved the original back in the arcades and on the Sega Master System. Seems like this is just going to be a remake of the original, unlike Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands which took place in all new levels. Delicious sprites, let me consume you. Boss battles might be all touch screen based tap tap tap shatter type things (I'm just guessing that from the whale screen, oh no he ate a car!), but the actual levels are hopefully left to the dpad. Rainbow Islands Revolution has very bad touch screen detection at times. ;_; Bubble Bobble Revolution finally gets released in America next month, too.

That's a kiwi? I thought it looked was a chick :(

I've never played this game, or even heard of it before, but the screens look cute and colourful. No idea if I'll actually buy it though. What's up with the silly map? I mean it's completely devoid of features but your position and the exit.

Infernal Monkey Jul 19, 2006 06:14 AM

Yeah the map screen does seem a bit silly, they just took the NSMB approach where its only use is to show you how close you're getting to the finish. And poor Tiki's always been nothing like an actual Kiwi bird. :(

But in the original he was a fair bit thinner!
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/9361/nzs01ha8.png

Now he's all fat for the DS, sort of like a real one!

I wonder how someone who is kidnapped managed to find time to draw a picture for Tiki to see. Perhaps the villain stopped for a bathroom break? Is Tiki wearing [i/]sneakers[/i]? Oops, this looks like something that would be better off in the Suspension of Disbelief in Games thread.

I never realized real kiwis were so fat! Kiwis are delicious. The fruit! I mean the fruit!

watkinzez Jul 19, 2006 06:47 AM

Awesome. This was one of my favourite platform games, hoping the soundtrack is as awesome as it was before.

map car man words telling me to do things Jul 19, 2006 06:50 AM

So am I to assume there will not be an arcade perfect Original version included? :(

Either way, this is looking sweet. The remade graphics don't even look like poo, which is amazing! Tiki looks a bit plump, but it's not

http://dsmedia.ign.com/ds/image/arti...1116459725.jpg

so it's all good and exciting. Yet another title I'll need to get once I buy a Lite. Intense expectings of how the cover will turn out :tpg:

Infernal Monkey Jul 19, 2006 07:14 AM

Ahaha poor Boy and His Snot! And I dunno about the original being included, probably not. :( Oh and the cover, yes! That'll be an exciting mystery. =D Will they do more gigantic disgusting jelly blob creatures like Bubble Bobble or just leave the title against a nice simple background like Rainbow Islands? I'm betting the first one!

"SO CUTE, SHIP IT!"
"But sir it gives me nightmares!"
"I SAID SHIP IT"

In the opening sequence the bad guy takes all the Kiwi's away in a giant sack! Maybe some fell out with just enough time to skillfully scribble a message on the wall instead of escaping before he noticed!

Tiki looks adorable. I'm so gonna buy this, as it looks no shitty and cute.

Monkey King Jul 19, 2006 08:34 PM

You're shitting me. The New Zealand Story? Ahahah, this is so stupid it's awesome.

Xardion Jul 20, 2006 12:32 AM

So this is what Elixir deals with every day?

Infernal Monkey Jul 20, 2006 01:11 AM

Pretty much! When I holiday'd'd over there years ago, I remember trying to get a taxi and the guy was like "nah bro" and handed me this balloon. As soon as I got the hang of it all these crabs and snails started coming at me, shooting whitebait rockets out of their mouths. It was chaos! Giant ice whale is a popular tourist attraction in Wellington!

=o Yes! I'll send it to them tonight!

PsychoJosh Jul 20, 2006 03:29 AM

Jesus crow, I remember this game! I played it at my mom's friend's house on her son's Nintendo when she went over there to talk about flowers and stuff when I was like seven and the house smelled like a dusty flea market and this game was all I could really remember. I think they were east indian, I don't know.

Taito makes the most kawaii games ever. HAPPY END~!

Yeah it's a mad house over here.

I remember this game. It didn't really click with me back in the mastersystem days, but I always played it when I was introduced to MAME. It's a fun game. The different ways of passing through the game is fun too. I don't think I've explored enough but I'm sure there's alot of secrets hiding away somewhere. Doors open up if you shoot in mid-air at nothing and stuff.

Since they're bringing all these classics out on the DS, I half expect to see Lemmings. It would work with the touchscreen and everything. The remake of the NZ story looks "cuter" and I prefer the original, but they'd have to be pretty stupid to fuck this up. Like they did with Rainbow Islands. (Drawing rainbows with the stylus, oh, what a great idea that was.)

 What the hell are you guys on about? Taito was simply the publisher (the guys who DISTRIBUTED the game), not the developer (the guys who MADE the game)... seriously, can't you guys tell the difference?

Infernal Monkey Jul 23, 2006 07:12 AM

Of course I know, I just wanted to post the box art. :(

Elixir Jul 23, 2006 07:44 AM

Eeehh, could be worse I guess.

Freelance Aug 2, 2006 05:45 AM

What's so appealing about a mini-game involving door handles? : /

The box art sucks, dude! For some reason, Tiki reminds me of Tweety in Mr. Hyde form :(

watkinzez Aug 2, 2006 06:23 AM

I hope that means arranged versions of the original tunes- love the New Zealand Story theme.

Torte Aug 4, 2006 04:51 PM

Ah I'm glad to see faithful recreations at least, unlike rainbow islands which was utter nonsense.

Infernal Monkey Sep 7, 2006 06:52 AM

Bump for?

http://www.tothegame.com/res/game/58...t_uk_large.jpg
Box art in all its.. glory..-ish..crap!

Also EuroGamer has some words. Possibly about the game.

Quote:

All the levels are laid out in exactly the same way as they were in the original, pleasingly, but Tiki himself has some smart new abilities, such as a double jump. He can also do a dash move, and even fly a bit if you hammer the jump button hard enough.

Tiki's also got a few more tricks up his sleeve when it comes to weapons. Once again, he comes equipped with a bow and arrow - but now you can use the shoulder buttons to aim. So, for example, if you need to jump down to a lower platform, you can line up a shot first and take out the enemy waiting below; bosses are a lot easier to take care of, too. In addition, you can charge up shots for a more powerful attack that will see off several enemies at once.
Quote:

Most of the time, the bottom screen will simply display a basic map of the level you're on, but occasionally it'll switch to show the action taking place up top, with one small difference to the level design. And it's your job to spot this difference; it could be that there's a platform missing on the bottom screen, for example. Whilst still coping with all the usual enemies and the like, you'll need to glance between the two screens until you've found the difference, then touch its location on the bottom screen.
That sounds very useless and annoying!

Quote:

The touch-screen also comes into play with a range of mini-games. You might find yourself doing a bit of fishing, or trying to keep Tiki balanced as he walks across a tightrope, or flicking him up to the top screen at just the right time so he lands in a moving basket. If you've got a friend with a copy of the game, you can play against each other, competing to see who can complete whatever task you've been set first. That's all there is as far as multiplayer options go, so don't go expecting a co-op mode.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/7...nzsopenqo2.png
At least there's no possible way this can turn out worse than Space Invaders Revolution. Reality won't allow it.

Infernal Monkey Feb 2, 2007 09:53 PM

Oh hello dead thread, for the thousands of people looking forward to this ( :cmb: ), seems like they've gone and broken this too. Which is a complete shock considering how perfect the previous Revolution games have bee-oh

IGN UK's review!

Quote:

The traditional element of the game is challenging and fun, although Dreams' attempts to include touchscreen updates results in the fun factor falling on its face. For the majority of play the bottom screen displays a haphazard radar that loosely marks the locations of exits and keys. However, now and again, an 'event' occurs that requires you to tap or stroke the stylus across the screen to help Tiki out.

These events have been poorly implemented in the game and don't gel with the rest of the game at all. What's more, they take you out of the action at crucial points, like when you're timing a difficult jump. That goes double for the spot the difference sections, in which you must pick out slight changes between the top and bottom screens while you're negotiating tough platforming sections. Ridiculous.
YOU STUPID GARBAGE BIN DEVELOPERS. STOP FORCING URINE INTO THE TOUCH SCREEN, DON'T WANT TO TOUCH IT.

Elixir Feb 2, 2007 10:08 PM

You quite literally have to dodge enemies on the top screen while spotting the difference between what's going on there, and what's going on the touchscreen. It's hard.

Oh and THEY REMOVED ALL WARP AREAS. On the first stage I noticed there's a warp area which is missing, and the ledges have been rearranged so you can't reach it. But you can reach it, it just isn't there.

Lacerta Feb 2, 2007 10:12 PM

Yeah I was playing it for a bit and I was confused :(

It was all LOOK AT THE TWO SCREENS AND TOUCH THE DIFFERENCE!!!

:20 enemies on screen:
:Can't see shit:
:random mash screen:

I think the difference was a random blue dot lurking in the middle or something. Who knows I was too busy fighting off things on floating pelicans:tpg:

Infernal Monkey Feb 3, 2007 04:15 AM

This is terrible. :( Leave that damn spot the difference junk to.. something! Else! Damn you farming these classics off to no-name developers, Taito! IT WAS EARTH ALL ALONG. This combined with news of the Rainbow Islands PSP update sucking even harder than the DS and you get one awesome day of news!

FatsDomino Feb 3, 2007 06:43 AM

Taito's next franchise to ruin is Snow Bros. Oh god I hope so. OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD.

Infernal Monkey Feb 3, 2007 07:17 AM

They'd probably turn it into a first person shooter and every two minutes the super fun action would stop so you could complete a dot to dot puzzle that wouldn't actually match up. =o

FatsDomino Feb 3, 2007 07:21 AM

If they add bullet time then I will buy 3 copies. =D

Okay yeah, I got this today. It's not Rainbow Islands Revolution style bad (also known as Superman 64 and Microcosm style bad) and it's not as brain dead and ugly as Bubble Bobble Revolution. Sitting somewhere in between! Opening doors with the touch screen made me roll my eyes out of their sockets though. I hope I get them back!

No hints of what the next title to be 'Revolutionized' is in the manual this time! Maybe they're giving up. Elevator Action Revolution plz, think of all the doors that could be opened then!

FatsDomino Feb 13, 2007 01:43 AM

Oh fuck yeah! Use the stylus to make your elevator go up and down! REVOLUTIONARY!

Infernal Monkey Feb 13, 2007 01:46 AM

There could even be the emergency call button, touch it with the stylus and use the microphone to talk to the maintenance guy! =D

"Can't help ya there buddy"
GAME OVER

EDIT: Finished the game last night. Had a lot of fun in the process. =) There was a trippy moment where I died and it actually sent me to heaven! Some of the touch screen mini games were pretty alright, the spot the difference thing that pops up every now and then was not one of them. The different remixed theme music for each level is rad. I still have some kiwi's to save though!
