Further, Guild Wars Nightfall has entered the beta testing stage and Guild Wars players worldwide are invited to participate in an exclusive, first-look player-versus-player (PVP) event, July 28 — 30, 2006.

During the PVP Preview Event, both Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions® players will get a first look at Guild Wars Nightfall, and will be able to try out the two new professions being introduced in the game; the Dervish, a scythe-wielding holy warrior, and the Paragon, guardian angel of the Elonian people. In addition to testing out the new professions and arenas, players will also be able to compete for items that will be exchangeable for a variety of rewards throughout the weekend event.

The Guild Wars Nightfall PVP Preview event will kick off on Friday, July 28 at 12:01am PDT and will continue through Sunday, July 30 at 11:59pm PST.

Guild Wars, an instant bestseller worldwide upon its release in April 2005, and Guild Wars Factions, the number one game in both North America and Europe earlier this year, are global online roleplaying games. Guild Wars Nightfall will continue the tradition of inviting players to immerse themselves in an epic storyline centered in a vibrant fantasy setting, build personalized characters, compete in head-to-head battles with players from around the world, and find adventure in missions and quests, in a Guild Wars game unlike any players have seen before.

Guild Wars Nightfall Exclusive Profile Preview - The Paragon and the Dervish Professions

The Paragon
The paragon isn't meant to be a frontline fighter. Instead, the paragon is best suited in a support role as a battle commander, capable of supporting teammates by throwing spears and using verbal chants and shouts that can boost the fighting abilities of those nearby. And the paragon's angelic nature isn't just aesthetic, as this profession's presence can help teammates resist hexes and other curses.

It's easy to identify paragons on the battlefield, thanks to their angelic look. Even the paragon's armor is saintly in appearance, thanks to the incorporation of ivory and mother of pearl in its materials. And if that weren't enough, a paragon's metal armor usually has the form of wings engraved in it. It's no wonder that the Elonians in the game believe that paragons are guardian angels sent by the gods to serve as champions for the people.
Quote:

The Dervish
If the paragon is best while standing back from a fight, the dervish is at home in the heart of one. These holy warriors are capable of striking at multiple targets simultaneously with their wicked scythes. Of course, they're armed with a whirling, spinning attack that's perfect for when in the middle of a bunch of foes. Dervishes can also cast spells on themselves that aid in their assault, and the profession has various healing and protection abilities as well. The profession's most powerful ability, however, is to temporarily transform into the physical embodiment of a god.

Since the profession is part warrior and part priest, dervishes are clad in robes rather than armor. Protection comes mainly from the dervish's agility in battle, as well as the various protection enhancements and spells. In addition to the robe, dervishes are equipped with bracers on their arms, and they're constantly hooded to show their humility to their gods.
Well, this is alot of info to take in. Nightfall comes with 2 new professions, and they both sound like offshoots of the 'paladin' from other games. Warrior preists.

Either way, I'm gona play in this pvp Beta thing to give both new classes a shot.

Prinnydood Jul 18, 2006 01:09 PM

Hey yea those sounds like pretty cool classes...I'm not really playin GW anymore and never even got Factions but I'll try this one out on the 28th anyway.

Grawl Jul 18, 2006 01:30 PM

Ah good, more money to spent on a game I barely play anymore.

Lacerta Jul 18, 2006 04:30 PM

We'll see how this turns out. It might drag me back in and it might not.

*waiting for the obligatory Kitty posting alpha impressions post*

Excrono Jul 18, 2006 06:56 PM

I thought this wasn't going to be out until early 2007, but it looks as if it will be out sooner than that if the Factions preview was any indication. The new classes sound great, and hopefully will be a bit more durable.

Turbo Jul 18, 2006 07:01 PM

They are planning on releasing 2 chapters a year, so expect Nightfall to be released between halloween and christmas

Actually, because I'm in alpha, I'm not allowed to talk about anything because of the NDA. :X

Everything is super top secret!

The event will take place September 22, 2006, beginning at 12:01am PDT and running through September 24, 2006 at 11:59pm PDT.

The Guild Wars Nightfall World Preview Event will feature previews of the new environments, new missions, and new battle arenas. The event will allow players to create Nightfall-specific characters from the six core professions as well as the two new NightfallTM professions, the Dervish and the Paragon, and try out new Nightfall skills. The entire Istani province of the new realm Elona will be open for player exploration, and players will be able to view the first Nightfall in-game cinematics. In addition, two new arenas will make their debut, the Sunspear Arena and Churranu Island.

For an added bonus, the November 2006 issue of PC Gamer magazine, due in stores a week before the event, boasts a Guild Wars Nightfall cover story, and includes an access key for an exclusive, in-game, Gray Giant miniature. The Gray Giant will be useable during the World Preview Event, and then may be reactivated with a Guild Wars Nightfall account upon release.

So, who's planning on playing it durring the weekend?

Grawl Sep 14, 2006 10:28 AM

I will be playing, fo' sho.

gaming Sep 16, 2006 03:25 AM

Will Nightfall require a new account?
Or can I use the same account and key from Guild Wars (+ Factions)?

Identity Crisis Sep 16, 2006 03:33 AM

When you've purchased Nightfall, the Nightfall campaign should be added automatically on to your account as well as two more character slots. This is based on the assumption that it works much like buying Factions to add on to Prophecies (or vice-versa) and you're paying for it at the online store (I'm not sure if the CD will allow the account merger).

Obviously you can merge.

Kenichi Sep 16, 2006 03:13 PM

A new expansion? Already? I'm not even halfway through the original and I've had it for over a year.

Excrono Sep 16, 2006 06:33 PM

After seeing the new login screen, I must say that if those graphics (and the trailer) are any indication, Nightfall is going to be really good. I was also impressed by the sitar driven preview piece, which is hopefully reflective of the entire soundtrack being composed in more of an Indian/Middle Eastern style, just as Factions featured minimalist Asian pieces, which I was kind of indifferent to personally.

And getting this will be really easy with the online store, who needs packaging anyway?

Grawl Sep 16, 2006 08:46 PM

Even though the Guild Wars server seems to be pretty unstable right now and had problems logging in I must admit the new main screen looks great. I love the new musical theme. I can get the game for 35 Euros at some online shop, so I'll get this expansion for sure.

Even when I won't finish it, like always.

Kitty Sep 17, 2006 09:42 AM

Yeah Grawl, you will log in for a couple days, message me once in a while, and then never come back again.
All of your characters are half played. I hope the PvE part of chapter three will be better than chapter two, otherwise it's going to be really painful to get all of my characters through it. ~_~

Same thing here. I just reached the snow place after evacuating the ruins of the first part of the game, I just don't play because I'm tired of having to team up with total strangers who leave the game halfway through the quest.

Grawl Sep 17, 2006 05:51 PM

In the original game I'm somewhere in the desert, and have no idea where to go since I skipped so many missions.
In Factions I just hit the mainland and there are just too many assassins around and I have no idea what a good As/Ra build is.

You should consult this site then, it has all the information about Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall you will ever need.

Grawl Sep 21, 2006 05:20 PM

I just saw the new trailers for the game. Apparantly (at least I didn't know this yet) the henchman can be ordered around =o Finally!

Excrono Sep 23, 2006 04:26 AM

Just got done putting in about 7 hours in Nightfall as a Paragon. I must say it is looking to be much more rewarding then Factions, at about the same level as the Prophecies campaign. I really like how they have balanced the reward you get for collecting items. Instead of the collectors armor being under leveled, it has been much stronger than normal (giving you incentive to collect to get it). Control of henchmen is also much improved and the ability to customize the equipment of your "heroes" is pretty nice as you don't have to worry about henchmen being underpowered or having crappy weaponry in certain key missions (i.e. Iron Mines of Moladune). I still haven't confirmed if they are really going to do salvageable damage mods (like 15^50) but then again I’m not very far in.

And I don't know if its just because Anet is still tweaking the balance, but it seems like this has been much more difficult. The mobs use a good variety of skills efficiently, and they have even thrown in high level versions of the same foe into mobs (like a level 13 Bog Skale in a group of level 8 skales) to catch people who are used to them being at the same level off guard. Plus the fact that you are limited to 4 people also increases the amount of strategy and planning that needs to go into the game.

Overall, I would say this is a definite buy for me at this point, this is going to be awesome.

Grawl Sep 23, 2006 07:31 AM

I like how people are actually moving their lips when talking now. Just played the first mission (time 4:30, is it possible to do it faster and get a better reward?). Also, will the characters keep existing and are they usuable when the game comes out? Got the most original character names as ever.

My Parargon is called 'Pa Rag On' and my Deverish 'De Ve Rish'.

The preview Nightfall characters have a temporary lifespan. :(

Grawl Sep 23, 2006 08:00 AM

I'll just have to make bogus accounts to keep my cool names then.

Excrono Sep 24, 2006 04:05 PM

Based on the wording of that item ID crisis, it seems as if the character will be reset (and not deleted). So the name and apperence will be intact, but you will have to start from scratch at the beginning.

Anyway, I have gotten to the end of the storyline quest for the preview event and must say if this first island is any indication, the rest is going to be extremely fun and challenging. Heck, some of the quests later on get really extreme (defending a village against 70 or so skale anyone?) So the end-game stuff should rival Sorrow's Furnace or FoW/UW.

What I really liked is that you first need to level to level 5 before you can pick a second profession.

Æ Ninja Æ Ver.2 Sep 25, 2006 10:48 AM

Alright I haven't been able to play GW in a while because of circumstances that are beyond my control. I completed Factions and Prophecies but I didn't get to try the Nightfall preview event. Don't get my wrong GW is an awesome game but here's how to make it better.

First they gotta get rid of all character classes except for Assassins (and maybe Rangers). Then they gotta change the name of Shing Jea Monastery to Ninja Tech. Then they gotta get rid of all the music and replace it with different remixed versions of War Pigs by Black Sabbath. In Ascalon they'll play the origional version of War Pigs. Oh yeah and there's too many different types of enemies. All the enemies should be zombies and there should only be 2 types of zombies Big Zombie and Small Zombie. There should only be one God in the land of Tyria and that God is Baal. The name of the game should be changed from Guild Wars to Assassin World. And finally there will be no more guilds but there will be 2 teams Red Team and Blue team and they have to destroy eachother. That would make GW awesome.

Hmm... I guess that would be the case, then. I took the term "reset" to mean "delete." Although, it does basically mean that only the features set up before the beginning of the game are saved. It's deleting in a sense, but your description was much more accurate.

Also, that level 70 Skale that you mentioned was a challenge. I died so many times trying to destroy that thing. :(

Grawl Sep 25, 2006 03:16 PM

And I had problems killing the lvl. 31 dragon during the Dragon Lair mission in the original Guild Wars.

Identity Crisis Sep 25, 2006 03:19 PM

You mean Glint, Grawl? Yeah, she was really difficult to kill without a couple of good interrupters. Crystal Hibernation and Crystal Haze ruined a lot of people's days.

"Wait, I'm completely exhausted after 5 seconds of spellcasting? How did that happen?!"

Grawl Oct 27, 2006 08:15 AM

Got my copy today :3 But the servers are incredibly slow, so I'm just installing the DVD now to avoid having to download every map.

Excrono Oct 28, 2006 03:26 AM

Just started in on my first really session in Nightfall. I had bought this via the online store on Thrusday night and got the update then when the servers were not strained so I was only loading updates for a few minutes. I didn't really get far, as I am concentrating on making money on short-term desierables such as the Halloween items or collector items in Kamadan. In addition I have decided to do my first playthrough with my Prophecies nuker, to conserve on buying new armor or equipment.

So far so good, I can't wait to finally get to the mainland.

Kimchi Oct 28, 2006 11:31 AM

I finally got the collector's edition.

I only have the original one and Nightfall. I don't have Faction and infact I haven't played for months.

I am probably going back to ranger, yet, I am cluless what 2nd profession I should pick to rock at PvP.

EDIT: Wait, are there a lot of cross dressers? I just hate them and want to beat the f*ck out of them.

Double Post:
Sweetness, damn miniture Varesh pet! It's pretty cool, but it is useless. (Just walks around blindly... can't be used in town =.=)

IGN-

S A K R A Y - Level 1 Ranger/Mesmer(or going to be...)

T R I F E C T A - Level 6 Ranger/Elementalist

Man, too bad you can only use english symbols for name...

EDIT *again*

Man, damn GW Wiki is laggy as hell half of the time. Anyone know a good site with leveling info on Nightfall? (Like how to fast level... I found some but it's only for Faction :edgartpg: )

Leveling in Nightfall is still easy as hell. Just do the quest and missions. You can't go anywhere without doing quest anyway, since you need to gain ranks to advance in the game.

Kimchi Nov 1, 2006 08:46 PM

Yep. Quiet easy. Maybe it's just me and my Ragnarok Online exp. (Reaching 3 characters lvl 99 trans? =X)

ATM I am working on my 15k prime armor. Maybe after that I will start working on my second Ranger =.=

BTW, it isn't Ranger/me I changed it to Ranger/Ele...

Cheezeman3000 Nov 1, 2006 09:28 PM

Aaaaaagh I really want this game but I can't buy it 'cause I HAVE NO MONEY!!!!!! Anyways I guess I'll continue to do stuff in Factions until I DO have enough money.... but I really really really want Nightfall.... really...

B4-Hunter Nov 2, 2006 05:57 AM

Few days ago in game shop guy told me that if I but Pre-Release CD for Hightfall for 19.99zł ~6$ I can get Nightfall for 30$ =) Pre-R gives me bonus items and one more character slot =D Isn't it awesome!

Kimchi Nov 2, 2006 07:26 PM

so you get 8 characters? Wow.

What items do you get? I bought collector's edition and got POS mini avatar that does nothing.

BTW, nice siggy and avatar.

EDIT: How TALL are your characters? I am just curious =D

Kitty Nov 13, 2006 09:35 AM

Sooo...who's playing playing?
Grawl came on to say hi to me for like, 2 seconds, and then never came around again.
I bought Nightfall, but I haven't even bothered to PvE yet since they changed the whole PvP creation system, though I kinda need to get Paragon/Dervish skills unlocked. :P

Lacerta Nov 13, 2006 11:12 AM

I can never find you, so I don't bother getting on.

PvE is boring though so I don't think I would be able to last an hour focusing on this agme.

I just got Nightfall yesterday as a gift. Playing my new Paragon, Irina Stolyar. I'm liking this expansion so far. The new additions are neato. (I don't have Factions, and never finished Prophecies)

Kimchi Nov 28, 2006 04:29 PM

I just got my phro(Game Of the Year edition and it costed me 10 more $$ =.= not worth my $$ IMO) and finished it. Its cool how my nightfall chracters gets to use Phro skills. I like nightfall armor better. =D
