Dreamcast - legendary games

I'm thinking of blowing the dust of my Dreamcast and start playing the thing again. Downloading Ikaruga as we speak. But what other games are great to play? Apparantly MSR is good, but I don't enjoy it all that much. I played Sonic Adventure 2 to dead, just trying to set the A rank on every level (but never got that).

evilboris Jul 16, 2006 02:23 PM

Soul Calibur, Tech Romancer (Jin Saotome!), and an occasional Chaos Field are the only DC games I still play every now and then. Under Defeat is also very nice.

Elixir Jul 16, 2006 02:43 PM

Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, Shikigami no Shiro II, Under Defeat, Ikaruga, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, Shenmue, Bangai-O, Crazy Taxi, Dead or Alive 2 (I like how this looks better than Dead or Alive 4), Elemental Gimmick Gear, Ecco, Evolution, Giga Wing 1/2, Gunbird 2, Grandia, House of the Dead 2, Typing of the Dead, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Last Blade 2, Project Justice, Power Stone, Virtual On.

Ugh.. is that enough, or do I keep going?

Don't forget about Crazy Taxi, Quake 3, UT, Skies of Arcadia, Sylver, Omicron, Sword of Berserk, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, Illblead. Ugh... oh!! And Puyu Puyu Fever & DA + Mr. Driller =D

I was all ready to IM you some extensive suggestions, but my AIM is fucked for whatever reason and then I remember you lost another AIM account anyway >=0

Anyway, Jet Set Radio definitely. Clumsy camera in parts, but fantastic visuals, a wonderful soundtrack and fun gameplay make for a great experience and a true part of gaming culture everyone should play, and a history lesson since it invented cell-shading and I don't think the style has still been bettered (Dark Cloud 2 fans can go screw).

Bangai-O is an absolute must for shooter fans and one of my absolute favorite Treasure games around. Fast, frantic and brilliant all around, a hilarious and intense puzzle-shooter hybrid.

Both Shenmue games have their flaws, but the wild ambition, visual accomplishment and wonderful atmosphere is very much there and make for a sublime gaming experience.

Project Justice is an awesome fighter thats only real flaw is how it doesn't work that well on a regular Dreamcast pad. Either learn to cringe or play with a PS2 adapter or arcade stick. Otherwise superior to the PS1 original in almost every way (except extra game modes and story cutscenes, I guess)

Echelon is still (think so) doing repack of original Shenmue with voices for all characters in game not only main one. Till now you can get 2 CD's from 4.

No one mentioned a fine Dreamcast game that I like, it's not legendary but very cool and fun anyway: Toy Commander

Also beware, Ecco the Dolphin is unbelivebly hard!

But, this is common knowledge.

Is there an Ecco title which isn't hard? If you were sucked into the mother's head with invincibility on, the game would freeze, so you can't even cheat your way through. I couldn't even complete the first one. Mostly because of the difficulty level, which was ridiculous, and mostly because it gave me nightmares.

Well... no. Yeah all Ecco games are unbelivebly, utterly hard.

Suggest an Emulator that would run ikaruga PLEASE!!

I NEED IKARUGA

Inhert Jul 16, 2006 10:54 PM

get the port on the gamecube?

well for dreamcast I can't really help you because i got it late and have only 2 games on it, Shenmue and power stone 2

I recommend both, Power stone is a "super smash game like" but on a 3D view with special power, really fun to play!

(I don't think I need to explain why Shenmue is a must too XD)

There are no emulators that will run Ikaruga. MAME does not yet support it I believe.

If you have a Dreamcast, just download the ISO from a torrent or something and burn it to CD.

Of course the game is worth every penny you would spend on it, but if you have to have it, you can take that route too.

Power Stone 2 is pants. The camera pans out so far to accomodate 4 characters that you can barely see what's going on. The first one is leaps and bounds better.

Shenmue is great if you can stand:

"I'm looking for some sailors."

"Can you tell me where to find some sailors?"

"What are some places sailors hang out?"

"Have you seen any sailors around?"

"I'm looking for some sailors."

I think the Mega 64 skit describes this perfectly.

You should seriously just buy a Dreamcast. A used DC is like...$30.

Also plays, it plays emulators!

Rydia Jul 17, 2006 01:16 AM

Grandia II and Soul Calibur were two of my favorite games from the Dreamcast. I still prefer the first SC to the latest installments, and it was initially the only reason I decided to purchase a Dreamcast. If you enjoy RPGs, I suggest playing Grandia II. I played the PS2 port, but it was difficult to get through because of the loading time.

Kuhazan Jul 17, 2006 01:24 AM

I'm playing my Dreamcast as we speak.. a month ago I completed Shenmue 1 again and now I'm playing Shenmue 2 on the beloved Dreamcast... which saw a lot more play of single player - non-music games than my current console : PS2... I need Shenmue III!!!!!

Zip Jul 17, 2006 06:41 AM

You should buy the games instead :(. It deservs your moonies.

B4-Hunter Jul 17, 2006 06:46 AM

Oh and don't just forget about REZ =D It's one of the best music shooters on DC and PS2...

Grawl Jul 17, 2006 02:26 PM

Alright, now that I got CD-Rs I'm downloading a bunch of games. So far got Ikaruga, which is completely brilliant. Also grabbed Guilty Gear X, just because. Awesome times.

Currently downloading Shenmue and Bangai-O. I already have Ecco, Crazy Taxi, Rez, Soul Caliber, Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, Virtual, UT and Jet Set Radio.

Miles Jul 17, 2006 02:30 PM

Am I the only person that enjoyed playing Sonic Shuffle? Sure, it was a huge ripoff of mario party with some poorly done ideas, but it was still a very fun party game. ;___; That, ad Power Stone 2 rocks. Hours and hours of 4-player action coming your way!

Grawl Jul 17, 2006 02:37 PM

I though Sonic Shuffle had horrible loading times.

Yeah. You can pick up the Dreamcast games off play-asia for something like $5 (I'm not kidding) brand new and sealed. Just don't get yourself too many games, otherwise you'll be spoilt for choice. If all you're going to do is rush through 50 Dreamcast games (like I did ;_;) and not take the time to play each one individually, it's going to kill the experience.

I am really surprised they didn't make a Power Stone 3. It could still happen, but when you think of SSBM, it could have happened on the Gamecube.

Grawl Jul 17, 2006 07:01 PM

Shenmue 1 freaks reunite!

The fourth disc is a "passport - Join D" one. Is it required to play the game?

Double Post:
What I couldn't find:

Chaos Field
Shikigami no Shiro II
Giga Wing 1
House of the Dead

Burp Jul 25, 2006 04:04 AM

One of the last games of Dreamcast its almost one of the best: Try Under Defeat, its an awesome shooter, Ikaruga-graphic quality with the G.Rev flavor (if you play Border Down you know what i talking about, another great DC title by the way)

Zorro Jul 25, 2006 07:00 PM

No one mentioned Headhunter :( Sure, it has its flaws (the fucked up motorcycle levels and the frustating timer at the end of disc one come to mind), but it's got one of the greatest game scores out there, a very cool atmosphere, gripping levels, a difficulty not for the faint of heart (at least later on) and hilariously hypocritical news flashes (with live actors to boot - with Bill Waverly & Kate Glosse the sequel would have sucked a little less). Not a year goes by without me playing my favorite levels. Now, if only the sequel would have kept what the original had promised... *sigh*

Zorro

omglasplagas Jul 27, 2006 10:31 PM

I really wanna play Segagaga (Burp's Sig).

Has anyone seen the youtube video of the last boss?
It looks insaneeee.
Spoiler:
You have to fight in sequence all of the Sega consoles of the past

I can't believe Phantasy Star Online wasn't mentioned. :( Marvel vs. Capcom 2?

Very little attention to Sonic as well. :(

Seconded. G.rev deserves your support, but since you're obviously not going to do that, I still recommend downloading the game. Under Defeat won't run at full speed (the original game runs at a noticably higher framerate) but it's still worth playing.

Maybe because Sonic Adventure 1, 2, and Shuffle aren't shit compared to what else's available for the Dreamcast.

dhsu87 Jul 28, 2006 01:30 PM

just wondering. where do you guys get your games now? you can pm me if it's not suppose to be public.

i downloaded a bunch a while ago. now my source has been taken offline.

i like the recommendations you guys gave earlier. Shikigami no Shiro II was an awesome game. i also recommend Giga Wing 2 for shooter-fans

crazy taxi 1, 2 are always fun. dreamcast is definately the best bang for your buck.

Nah, the fourth disc is just movie sequences from the game and a music player, but it's pretty awesome because the tutorial features some incredibly detailed character faces, it still looks miles better than anything on PS2.

I think you could access some DreamArena content there too, but that's long gone now.

Well no wonder. House of the Dead was only ported to Saturn in Japan, DC got HotD2.

I thought DC only got Giga Wing 2, but apparently there IS a GW1 for DC. If you find it, let me know =o

Grundlefield Earth Jul 28, 2006 03:50 PM

Is this thread serious? Has no one mentioned Skies of Arcadia? NO ONE can come up with a good reason to dismiss this game as THE BEST DC GAME EVER. NO ONE

Shenmue, and Ecco fall right behind it.

i still need to play that game. got about 1 hour into the first disc. looked so promising. but i had 40 other games to test out so never really went back to it.
Sonic Adventure 2 remains the only game i've completely beat (didn't get all A ranks, but at least beat all the missions on each lvl)

speculative Jul 30, 2006 09:07 AM

Rayman 2. I don't have my Dreamcast anymore, and bought the PS2 version of Rayman 2. It blew big chunks next to the DC version. However, the DC version is one of only a handful of games (console) I've actually played all the way through in the last decade!
