Profiling Based on Your Beverage

I was listening to the radio on the way in to work this morning, and they were discussing how people sometimes judge the kind of person you are based on what you're drinking.

For example, a lady called in and said that she's a server in a restaurant, and if anyone orders white zinfandel she assumes that they're trashy and probably won't tip her worth a crap. A couple of other people called in and said that men shouldn't drink any colored or fruity drinks - ever. By far, the womens' preference for what men "should" drink was dark beer...in a glass, never a bottle, and men seem to prefer women who drink martinis, which is odd, because I don't know any women who drink them. The general consensus was that no one should drink beer in a can unless they're doing some outdoor activity like tailgating or boating.

Will anyone else admit to doing this?

RABicle Jul 13, 2006 09:21 AM

Totally do it.
Any girl over 16 drinking vodka premixes isn't worth your time.
Low carb beer: Wimps
And dark beers should be drunk in glasses. Serously those fizz things in the Guiness bottles don't cut it. Oh yeah anyone drinking Guiness qualifies for legend status.

Alice Jul 13, 2006 09:31 AM

I admit to the white zinfandel thing, having been a server for years. And also, a man drinking any wine other than red sets off my creepy dude alarm, but I never really thought about some of the other ones that were mentioned.

A funny story: Just last week my husband and I went out for some drinks, and he took a sip of my pomegranate/Red Bull drink and liked it so much that he wanted to order one, but wouldn't because it was red and fruity. I told him he was being ridiculous, but according to all these people, he was right. =/

RABicle Jul 13, 2006 09:37 AM

I don't even know what a zinfandel is. Does that make me classy? Don't know about your anti white whine thing. I love white wine, maybe I haven't adapted to reds yet but whites are sex.

And your husband made the correct judgement. No doubt everyone would've thought he was gay and you were his sister or cousin or ohwait-
:p

Alice Jul 13, 2006 09:39 AM

White zinfandel is that pink wine that sometimes comes in a box and should never be consumed, ever.

RABicle Jul 13, 2006 09:41 AM

Oh god. Now I know. Yeah never touching that. I'm only allowed to consume cask wine, or goon as we affectionaly call it, because I'm a poor student, living off the government.

Awww;_;

I always wonder why people would honestly drink stuff like Barcadi [Flavour] and Smirnoff Ice. Jesus, people, if you want to get drunk, drink rum or Vodka or whatever. If you crave the taste of soda, drink soda.
I've always thought that an ice cold beer is superiour to that Barcadi thing. (Which also regards people drinking it...) That could be because I've never really encountered other than asses and idiots drinking it. I can't deny that there is great people drinking it, though...

Anyone drinking Guiness qualifies for cunt or tourist, normally both.

Judging people by their drinks serves only to highlight people's personal insecurities and desperation to conform to social norms in order to be accepted. I know from experience you should never judge someone by their drink and I've been a barman a long time.

I drink vodka/fruit mixers quite often. Maybe it's early in the morning and I have a hangover (All teh sugar and alcohol sorts you right out), maybe I've just snorted half a gramme of coke and my stomch is feeling too delicate for beer, maybe I just fancy something refreshing between pints, you've no way of telling.

How do you know the people drinking Zinfandel don't just think your whole wine list is shitty so they might as well have the cheapest if it's al gonna be rubbish anyway? Surely it says more about you that you work in the kind of shit heap that would sell crap wine in the first place.

So yeah, I have no time for anyone who labels people by what they drink. If you do it, you're clearly an insecure fuck who's probably uncomforatble with their own sexuality or completely lacking in any form of social skills thereby forcing you to do anything you can to fit in and stop everyone realising what a loser you are and jogging you on.

Alice Jul 13, 2006 09:49 AM

For someone who has no time for it, you sure took a big enough chunk out of your day to write that essay.

It's fine if you don't do it. Apparently people do, though, and I was just curious about people's perceptions here. I actually never realized I did it, either, until I heard all those people calling in about it on the radio today. And the odd thing was, they pretty much were all in agreement. So that should tell you something.

I tried Guinness once, and it was decent, but it cost me like four times as much as a normal beer. Is it fucking expensive in Britain as well, or what?

AlphaDeus Jul 13, 2006 09:56 AM

I don't really follow how to judge people by what they drink, other than ordering fruity drinks as a male. I'll pretty much drink anything if it tastes good regardless of how other people perceive me.

I enjoy White zinfandel. It's what I like to call my "Cheap buzz". I started experimenting with other drinks and have found others that taste better and work quicker :p I mostly drink Alize or as I call it "Liquid gold" >.>

When I go out, I always order a Long Island Icea Tea, and something fruity/chocolatey for desert (with alcohol in it duh :p)

On the subject, I've never judged a man by his drink, simply by whether or not it had an umbrella in it :P and I don't know what women drink.

Mucknuggle Jul 13, 2006 10:01 AM

I don't really understand it, and I don't really care much about it. I like my vodka and I'll drink it straight or mixed. I don't care. Cranberry juice + orange juice + vodka = awesome. Straight vodka = good depending on the brand (Grey Goose <3). I really don't see how consuming alcohol + fruit beverage = bad for men. Are guys not allowed to eat fruit or drink fruit juice? How about smoothies? Stereotyping by drink type is just stupid.

Alai Jul 13, 2006 10:22 AM

I don't care what people drink generally. If they like bum wine, that's cool. I don't hang around people who spend alot on alcohol, mainly because we are all in college. I see alot of people drinking Vodka, and that's definitely a good way to get drunk, but I don't like the taste. I would take a Shiner over any drink anyday. IF I want to get drunk quick I guess some Hornitos Sauza tequila. Whatever is takes.

Will Jul 13, 2006 11:53 AM

I'm a rum & coke or gin & tonic kind of guy. Though usually I end up drinking cheap vodka and whatever I can find to make it go down more easily. I've never understood why people treat the Smirnoff Twisters and the like as chick drinks. Who made the rule that anything with 5% alcohol by volume has to taste like shit? Come on, beer tastes like ass, and if I had no liquor I'd choose a chick drink over beer any day.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Jul 13, 2006 11:56 AM

The only drink that sends out red flags, to me, is Zima.

Anyone who drinks Zima is a waste of breath.

Everything else is just a matter of personal preferences.

Soluzar Jul 13, 2006 12:02 PM

Cheapass drinks as a rule mean that someone is a cheapass, but other than that, I'm inclined to agree with Shin. There are different drinks for different circumstances. Why judge someone because of that, when there are much more obvious ways they can prove themselves to be a jerk?

Ahahah. Some acquaintances I ran in to at the AGU conference last December in San Francisco had an obsession with Guiness... =p Off the record, all of us were from Texas. So true~ ((I didn't have it...))

I am not huge on alcohol, but I enjoy a White Russian from time to time. Big Labowski holla. It's real tasty if they make it sweet enough. I'm a sucker for sweet alcohol.

Crash --
Holyshit. Zima is still being *made*? Thought it went the way of Crystal Pepsi long ago...

Alice Jul 13, 2006 12:08 PM

Well, apparently Rab and I are the only ones who will admit to doing this. On a positive note, I have to say that a guy drinking a black and tan is kind of hot, for some reason.

Yeah for real, I happen to like green apple smirnoffs. Fuck beer, beer sucks. I'll take my sissy fruit flavored smirnoff any day over something that tastes bad.

Also, I am not particularly attracted to girls who drink beer. Obviously I harbor personal bias against beer and beer drinkers.

Crowdmaker Jul 13, 2006 01:43 PM

Is this the consensus - guys can't drink fruity/colourful drinks. Why, is it that guys aren't allow to admit that alcohol tastes terrible? Or if there's something bad about adding fruit flavors to stuff, then that mean it's wimpy to drink pom or naked? As for me, while gin and tonic is the ultimate, I love my fruity cocktails. I agree entirely with Shin - I think judging people on something so lame as what they drink is retarded. If anyone is so shallow as to judge me on what drinks I like, then they're probably not worth my time. And if someone is so insecure as to let these stereotypes prevent him from drinking the things one genuinely enjoys, then that person deserves whatever terrible-tasting stuff that he or she feels compelled to drink.

Actually, that's where my prejudice in drinks one orders comes in. If it looks like someone's ordering something patently manly like a vodka on the rocks with a spray of Everclear over it or something just to show off, I begin to suspect that they're a tool. But even there, I think there are more obvious ways to tell.

Thanks Shin, sure saves me writing anything as that sums up my own feelings nicely.

Judging people by their drink preference is just another form of short-sighted stereotyping.

BlueEdge Jul 13, 2006 04:02 PM

Does this only work for alcoholic drinks? Or what about like this guy drinks Nestea...lol i dunno

Render Jul 13, 2006 04:25 PM

I'm in an area mainly dominated by farmers, ranchers, and asshat wannabes. Guys drinking any kind of girly drinks (fruit, premixes, colorful) are instantly stereotyped as a fag. This is only true when at a bar, or a lame party with tons of people who don't know each other.

I happen to like girly drinks, though. They're not the mainstay of my beverage selection, but I will drink them if they're around. I drink either beer or straight Crown Royal. For some reason, beer will get me just as drunk as Crown in almost a proportionate amount. :(

Pomegranate + Red Bull? That sounds like a tasty healthy power drink!

Paco Jul 13, 2006 04:29 PM

I drink Newcastle and Gordon Biersch. I'm cool.

Right?

Haha.

As a general rule, I don't drink the little mixers, like Smirnoff Twisters and Mike's Hard drinks. It doesn't really have to do with them being "girly", but I need to drink like ten of them to get sufficiently buzzed. It's pretty bad. Vodka just gets the job done quicker.

THIEF Jul 13, 2006 07:01 PM

I drink hard liquor without chasers. Chasers are for girls supposedly.

Although Mike's Hard Lemonade is marketing as "hard", it is really a girl's drink. No self respecting guy drinks that.

Edit: note the sarcasm plz

Vampiro Jul 13, 2006 07:20 PM

I drink tap water. So i guess that makes me bland, but also gives me that "living-on-the-edge" kinda thing. Good blance I say.

Trigunnerz Jul 14, 2006 12:19 PM

I must be a cheap gay son of a bitch because the only things I order is water or some fruit drink (like orange juice). Usually I'm the one driving so drinking alcohol isn't the greatest idea. And I've been trying to cut down on my soda intakes too for health reasons.

Alice Jul 14, 2006 12:33 PM

To everyone who has been deeply offended by this thread, it's true that you really can't look at a guy drinking a glass of chardonnay and determine with 100% accuracy that the guy is a fag, but it's the little clues about people that allow others to size them up.

Seemingly superficial things like how someone dresses, what they drink, whether or not they smoke, how they speak, who they associate with, etc. might not mean much when you look at each item individually, but when you put the whole puzzle together using all the little clues that people give, you can usually get a pretty good analysis of a person.

Qube Jul 14, 2006 01:57 PM

I've never understood the whole "chick drink" think. I mean fuck, a beer typically has 5% alcohol. A smirnoff vodka cooler, of any variety, has 7%. I dunno, that sounds more potent to me. ;p

Regardless, I will usually drink whatever happens to be served, or whatever is available, and when I have my choice, all depends on the mood. If I'm looking to get drunk, Smirnoff Ice goes down easy, and usually doesn't make me sick. Beer is a win anytime, and well, takes forever to get me drunk on it though.

If I'm out having a dinner or something, a rum and coke is plenty good for me, or rye and coke as my mood determines.

Do I even think to consider a person based on what they are drinking? I suppose sometimes I do. It's all generalities obviously, but when I'm trying to figure someone out, what they're drinking will most often be a sign of how much class they have. I find wine drinkers are usually a lot more mature, and if they actually appreciate what they're drinking, then I know that they're not just drinking for the buzz.

Meh, but Alice is right, it's just one of those little things that you notice about people, that when placed with other little tidbits of information, makes up the character of that person.

Would I ever judge someone I don't know, when I am not talking to them, just by what drink they order? Hell no, that's just as bad as any other stereotyping crap, and I just don't go there.

JackyBoy Jul 14, 2006 01:58 PM

So what, we're only interested in whether the person is a fag or not? I personally don't drink beer too often and much prefer mixed drinks. I really don't care what some skinny punk at the other side of the bar thinks of me when I drink my vodka paralyzer. And if someone ever did take issue with it I would be more than happy to go outside to "talk" about it. But I am thinking people who go to bars/pubs/clubs and measure up guys by their drink have probably never had sex before.

I don't think these people are building intricate models of how a given mans mind ticks here. It's "I have this backwards notion about this one thing, should you be guilty of = red flag against your entire character". You find solidarity with them, and I think your last post was both appeasing backpedalling, and an attempt at justifying being surface obsessed.

This bit of letterbox-pissing mockery was a good bit of irony though:

considering one of the more stand-out cases of REACTION in this thread has been your catty lashing out against Shin's about-turn opinion of people with base preconceptions.

In a perfect world, you shouldn't be able to stereotype anyone reliably. Unfortunately it's practically a requirement to function socially in our imperfect world. People like me who can't stand that idea, even while understanding it full well, ironically typically do little to deviate from it. And thus, people who try to oppose it often just end up reinforcing it.

At some point in your life, when you learn you have to adapt to survive, you just give up and conform to life's inherent stupidity. It's not like you could fix that stupidity anyway by mindlessly struggling against it.

Leknaat Jul 15, 2006 01:43 AM

I remember being told that women should never drink a beer out of a bottle--they should always use a glass. This was from a woman.

I looked at her and said, "You go to bars to pick up guys. Don't you want them to see how well your mouth works?"

Which, of course, implies I hate this sterotype thing. In finer restaurants, White Wine is best with chicken and fish, and Red Wine is better with red meat. That's a matter of knowledge or taste, whatever.

As for the server who made the Zinfandel remark--you KNOW that as a server, you send off little vibes about how you feel about that customer, right? So, it may not be the drink, but the employee.

Shin's absolutely right--judging a person by what he/she drinks is the most insecure thing in the world. That means you have problems that need to be dealt with.

And there's a bar around here that invented their own Lemonade (I think it might have been sold to Mike's) and it's strong.

Oh, and BTW--I drink Long Island iced teas.

Dullenplain Jul 15, 2006 02:02 AM

I mainly drink water, but if I do have alcohol, it's beer, and it's usually Shiner Bock. I abhor liquor and can tolerate wine. All this based on the various "hey, try this" adventures I partake with friends.

I don't know what that says about me though.

DragoonKain Jul 15, 2006 02:10 AM

I think people who drink alcohol in general suck. How about them apples?

But I usually drink juice, gatorade, soda or water.

My favorite is Stewart's soda. It's so damn good.

I think the whole premise of drinking as a social thing is plain stupid. I drink because I'm thirsty, and only then. So the whole "girls do this guys do that" is stupid to me. Drinking shouldn't have anything to do with your masculinity. I don't see the logic in it.

Leknaat Jul 15, 2006 02:14 AM

You know, it's not like we're saying we drink every night of the week.

It's been over a year since my last alcoholic drink--how about them apples?

If I do go out--I get Long Island iced teas for a reason. I like them, but I don't have to make them. :)

DragoonKain Jul 15, 2006 02:21 AM

You're right, but I didn't expect it to be so soon as to where someone took it so seriously.

I was being facetious about how I think people who drink alcohol suck, but I really don't get the premise in defining someone by their drink.

Leknaat Jul 15, 2006 02:24 AM

There is one thing not mentioned here.

You're in a bar, and you see someone drinking Coke (no booze) or Orange Juice (no booze). What does that tell you? They're wimps? No--they either have liver damage or they are the designated driver.

And, I've had enough about these mixed drinks things being for girls and guys, too.

Let me give you a history lesson. These "fruity" drinks are known as Cocktails. They came about during prohibition to hide the alcohol that was in the drink. So, next time someone looks at someone drinking one of these drinks--just think: "Wow. They're drinking something invented to BREAK THE LAW."

DragoonKain Jul 15, 2006 02:29 AM

I don't go to bars often, because people smoke in bars, but if you ever see someone at a sports bar, watching a game and drinking a sprite, that's probably me. I know some people who are embarassed to drink a non-alcoholic beverages in bars, but I either get a sprite or a cherry coke.

I never get water, because when people pour water in glasses in restaurants or bars, the water usually tastes dirty.

Because they can. Whether it works or not is irrelevant. If it boosts their social status by being able to make claims with the same working principles of pseudo-science that people can buy into, then by god they'll make them. And if you are the unfortunate exception to their rule, then it makes them feel good to get away with inflicting social pressure upon you to make you conform to them. Doesn't matter if you're straighter than a paper cut, shame on you for drinking a fag's drink! You're now a fag. Fag.

I've come to the conclusion that everything we as humans do amount is in some way connected to having or weilding power of some sort. But it really does make sense, since if you look at it, power is the most literal way to ensure survival there can be. And everyone wants to survive, in one way or another.

Star Man Aevum Jul 15, 2006 02:34 AM

You're missing one very important option there - or they're teetotal. Some people just choose not to drink. Not because of medical reasons, not because they're driving, because they plain old just don't want to.

It was the whole Perception thing. People assume that you can't drink because A) of Medical reasons or B) you're the Designated driver.

Most people don't think that you're not drinking simply because you don't want to. Just like they think you're drinking a "fruity" drink because you're gay. Or you drink Zinfandel because you're cheap.

Robo Jesus Jul 15, 2006 07:39 PM

I've profiled peoples basic personalities based off of how the drive, such as how often they hit the brake, whether or not they're going over or under the speed limit, or how much distance they put between themselves and the cars in front of them. These things for example can tell me how confident the person is, plus basic things about how they approach things in life.

No, the problem isn't the fact that the majority of people profile other peoples personalities off of seemingly random bits of information. The problem is the people who profile are either wrong the majority of the time, or that they're right and hit on things about the person which feels hurtful to that person.

The Best Statement On This Thread, Hands Down!!!!!!

I try my best not to stereotype anybody based on clothes, music, and etc, but unfortunately it does happen on my part. To me I don't really form a concrete opinion about a person until I actually talk to them and get to know them for the person they truly are.

In terms of the whole alcohol thing, I tend to drink alcohol based on taste alone, I never drink to get a buzz on or drunk. To me I drink whatever I feel that tastes good and I do drink quite a few liquers. I honestly drink quite a few alcoholic things; everything from beer to the odd cocktail or two.

I get a lot of hell from my guy friends when I drink grasshoppers (creme de menthe and milk) they say why are you drinking that girly drink and to me its just a simple response that it tastes good. I even invent my own drinks such as mixing zambuca with 7-up and I've yet to find anyone that has made that concoction, but yet I drink it because it tastes good.

I just personally think profiling someone on what they drink is incredibly stupid. To be honest the only type of profiling I've heard in terms of drinking alcohol is that guys shouldn't drink cocktails or girly drinks. I hear that from a lot of my guy friends especially when I was in university.

Its just drink what you like, and what you enjoy and if people deep down have to profile you because of it then they're not really forming a valid interpretation of the kind of person you are and probably even aren't worth your time.

I don't personally care about how many puzzle pieces fit into a person's lifestyle to judge a person on these puzzle pieces alone, is a cruel way to form an opinion/judgement on someone. Unfortunately it does happen.

Instead of assuming that someone is a certain way because of what they drink, if you want to be so sure of yourself have the courage to say it to their face. Then see what kind of reaction you'll get.

Besides this whole alcohol theme this thread has had, I was thinking of how someone appears when they're drinking a diet drink. Usually if it's someone morbidly obsese who just ordered a double cheeseburger, an extra side of fries and an apple pie a la mode, and then a diet coke, it just seems really ridiculous to me, even more so if they just ordered a normal drink.

Being designated driver isn't fun and I'm glad I've only had to do it twice. I'm also glad the girl in the back seat took the time to roll down the window then let herself go. I would much rather wash dried vomit from the side of my door than from the car seats.

You've never had a Karl Strauss Red Trolley, have you?

I'll drink anything, even bitch brews if the sixer costed more then 6-7 bucks. The only alcohol that i refuse to consume is cheap rot-gut like 211, Busch, Coors, and Budweiser. Lately i've been drinking alot of Dogfishhead 120, Sierra nevada IPA, various trappists, Anchor Steam and Newcastle (Mainly because it has that tea taste to it, and that is good for summer weather ).

Dogfish Head 120 is awesome. It has a good hearty finish like the Rogue IPA. I'm thinking my next keg is going to be either that or a K.S. Stargazer IPA.
