Zero no Tsukaima

J.C. Staff is back again with a sure to be a hit summer anime, Zero no Tsukaima. The story revolves around a failure of a witch who summons a human as her familiar, causing hilarity to ensue. A short plot rundown taken from the Anime News Network:

Quote:

In fact, her magic tends to go spectacularly wrong. Now, as an important test of her aptitude for magic, she must summon a familiar to be her servant. At this critical moment, she summons up all her magic and wishes for a familiar that is "devoted, beautiful and powerful", and gets... Hiraga Saito, an ordinary Japanese boy. It's difficult to say who is more surprised and dismayed, but the rules don't allow for second attempts. Louise is stuck with her strange familiar, and he with her.

THE CAST

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...imu/Louise.jpg

Meet Louise, the star of the show and a failure of a witch. The rest of the students all laugh at her for it, and her "explosive" techniques often cause trouble around the school. She's got pink hair, it's cute. =o

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...imu/Hiraga.jpg

Meet Hiraga, Louise's familiar. He was summend from his normal place in life to the Academy. He finds himself in a bit of peril as he seems unable to communicate with Louise and everyone else until one of Louise's silence spells backfires.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...nimu/Osman.jpg

This is Osman, principal of the academy and an old pervert. His familiar is a mouse which he apparently uses for nefarious purpouses.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ongueville.jpg

This is Ms. Longueville, who keeps an eye on Osman as his seceretary, when he's not sexually harassing her, that is. I hear she wears a white G-string, but that's all hearsay. >_>

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...imu/Kirche.jpg

Sup Kirche. She fills the roll of your typical huge chested lusty anime babe. She apparently spends a lot of time flirting with the boys of the academy, and hangs out with Tabitha and Montmorency in her spare time. Her familiar is a salamander.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ontmorency.jpg

This is Montmorency. Despite her strange name she seems rather well mannered, but that doesn't stop her from taunting poor Louise. Her familiar appears to be a big frog/toad.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...mu/Tabitha.jpg

This is Tabitha. She's very quiet and reserved, and usually has her face in a book of some kind. Think Yuki from Haruhi.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...imu/Guiche.jpg

Flamboyant and overly full of himself, Guiche is your typical lady-killer character. And that rose in his mouth, that's acutally his wand. I think his familiar is a mole of some sort.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...imu/Siesta.jpg

A commoner (much like Saito) she works as a servant at the Academy and seemingly harbors feelings for our unlucky hero after he rescues her from an unsightly situation.

And finally,

?

Zero no Tsukaima presents a very colorful cast of characters and it appears the story will be very character oriented in its presentation. The animation is quite smooth and the concept certainly is appealing. Two groups are subbing it right now, FROTH-BITE (avi) and Kuroneko (mp4).

I'll probably watch this for the Yuki clone (TEH REI). I'm not too interested otherwise, but with Haruhi and PPD gone I need a new comedy.

dhsu87 Jul 11, 2006 09:07 PM

first episode was fairly interesting. art isn't fantastic imho, but seems pretty enjoyable. will pale in comparison to haruhi, but will do its job this season

Luxo Jul 12, 2006 12:12 AM

Meh, I actually expected more of this show. It does have some fun moments but it's not really something otherworldly.

Maybe it will improve as the story progresses (hopefully).

sup tails i didnt steal your name okay

DarthSavior Jul 12, 2006 03:08 AM

This show is full of win for me cause...

Kugimiya Rie (Shana) as Louise = win
Hino Satoshi (Yuuji) as Hiraga Saito = win
Kawasumi Ayako (Yoshida, or to Fate/stay Night fans as Saber) as Henrietta = win

Louise saying "URUSAI" = lol win
J.C. Staff doing the animation = win
Maid character = win
Perv headmaster = win
Obligatory silent character with glasses = win
Catchy opening theme = win

CLOudkiller Jul 13, 2006 02:38 PM

Some wins ya got there. yeah, the staffs for this anime sounds very promising, though I don't think it will make a big impact as Haruhism.

Of course. =O The first episode was setting up all the characters and introducing everyone.

The second episode is out by the way, check the first post for links.

Foshi Jul 14, 2006 11:01 AM

Am I the only one that thought "Harry Potter" for the first half of episode 1?
I really didn't like the music it was plain and common sounding. The characters are interesting enough for me to watch a couple more episodes before I decide if I want to keep watching it.

Little Shithead Jul 14, 2006 11:18 AM

I think we all thought "Harry Potter" at some point, but honestly my first thought was "gtfo fag" when Guiche first opened his mouth.

Second thought was "THIS WAND PRINTS MONEY!!!" when the teacher did alchemy.

Tails Jul 15, 2006 03:30 AM

Someone asked me today about which version to download, and having seen both episodes by both groups, I'll give everyone a heads up.

Kuroneko's is of acceptable quality, though there are a few typos here and there. Nothing too big, but if you're picky over stuff like that you'll want to avoid them. As far as source quality goes:

Kuroneko:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...Kuroneko02.jpg

FROTH-BITE:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...rothBiteO2.jpg

It's pretty clear whose subs I'm sticking with after this.

Bigblah Jul 15, 2006 04:18 AM

My take: Kuroneko's encoder knows his sharpening filters :p Froth-Bite wins at color levels though.

F-B is a quality group, no doubt. Kuroneko fails at quality checking their script (just look at their OP karaoke), but their translation is still acceptable. It's all down to whoever gets the subs out faster, and regularly.

The music is by Shinkichi Mitsumune, who previously composed for... that's right, Mahou Sensei Potter Negima.

Foshi Jul 15, 2006 10:08 AM

Yeah, I enjoyed episode 2 more than 1. Things are getting interesting at least and it's starting to feel less like Harry Potter. One problem I have is that Saito so easily becomes like a slave to Louise. He doesn't show any back bone until later on and he accepts the world he's in without a fight.

I don't mind the background music. It's the opening and closing music that I disliked. Thankfully, those are easy enough to skip.

Luxo Jul 15, 2006 12:40 PM

Nice, I can see this getting better. I'm not hooked but now I'm interested on what will happen.

Just saw episode 1...I'm a fan of Maburaho, so this was a fun watch. I like the general scenario and am interested what they do with it in the next couple of episodes.

Getting Ep 2 now.

Episode 3... when swords start talking I stop watching.

It wasn't so bad though. I will watch a few more.

People should use spoilers as a courtesy to others.:
Saito the player. I can't believe he didn't bag that Kirche bitch. How can these anime male leads be so placid. So, unrealistic. There's no way I wouldn't bag any hot bitch who threw herself on me.

How the hell is that a spoiler? It was in the preview of episode 3 seen at the end of episode 2.

How about those who haven't seen episode 2, then?

Either abide by the spoiler rules, or I'll have to start deleting posts.

After seeing the comparison between F-B and Kuroneko, I obviously want F-B, but I can't run it on Winamp, DiVX, RealPlayer, or WMP. Winamp and RealPlayer play audio, but no video. The others keep bitching about not supporting MP4 files or the files being 'bad' or something.
Any help?

Media Player Classic

You can play any file media file with this easily.

If you're still having trouble download CCCP.

Mojougwe Jul 27, 2006 12:09 AM

I just started watching this and it really didn't interest me much until near the end of episode 2. But after understanding what Louise had done to Saito, I'm more than interested now. Although, does anyone else get this feeling:

Spoiler:
The wands look as if the design was adapted from Harry Potter media. With one exception, the handle/base is much more thicker. And the wand tip extends out as if it were an atenna. The fact they don't look anything like in FFXI or some other game/anime with elegant designs and structured wooden curls here and there makes me think of Harry Potter.

Tails Jul 29, 2006 02:28 PM

Ahahaha man, FB finally released episode 3 (see first post) and I love it. LOVE IT. An episode with SEXY RESULTS.

All in all very hilairous. The characters continue to be unique and extremely interesting (ahahah Tabitha using a silence spell on Kirche) and many laughs are had during the duration of the entire episode.

Also, Kirche is hot.

Foshi Jul 29, 2006 02:49 PM

Episode 4 is about that maid girl Saito becomes friends with. It's just standard fun, no real advancements in the story.

Spoiler:
So, it looks like Saito will have three women vying for his attention. Lousie, the maid, and Kirche. Although Lousie still thinks of him in a servant/master sort of way.

It's already starting to feel very generic after four episodes. I really hope something good comes up soon.

Yeah, I also think it's starting to get pretty generic. It's caught my attention, though, so unless it gets really bad I'll stick it out till the end.

I do like the characters though, despite how Tabitha is a blatant Yuki ripoff.

FatsDomino Aug 1, 2006 02:52 PM

How is she a Yuki rip-off? You realize how generic that type of character is, right?

More like despite how Yuki is a Rei clone and Tabitha is also a Rei clone.

OMG TEH REI

This has quickly become my favorite anime this season

Louise is one of the few Tsundere characters i like at all. Only other one i remember is Shana, and i still didn't like shana as much as i am liking Louise.

I don't really care for Tabitha other than her staff, because i like staves.

Kirche is another favorite character of mine. And not for the Oppai effect either.

Montmerency's design seriously makes me happy. I love her. She ties with Louise as best character this season and i'll hear no other opinion >:(

If you think about it, grammically its incorrect. But normally we read along right thru and without think once so ever about it because, we have just learned that its no problem.:doggy:

Uh, there shouldn't even be a question that they're using a word wrong. "Lose" and "loose" have two completely different meanings.

It's a case of not looking over it thuroughly before approving the translation.

Tails Aug 14, 2006 10:12 PM

Episode 6 folks!

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...gryTabitha.jpg

Hungry Tabitha is huuuuuunnnnngryyyyy. =ooooooooo

We seem to be into the few episodes where they try to establish characters backgrounds a little more. I'm guessing we'll be seeing mostly Louise, Kirche (<3) and Tabitha as our main focus. As an aside:

Episode 6:
I wonder what's causing such weird items to go from Saitos word to Louise's world. I mean come on, first a porno magazine, then a soldier with a rocket launcher? What's the deal. Anybody else have any clues?

Also, please tell me that wasn't the real Mrs. Longueville. ;_____;

Mojougwe Aug 15, 2006 02:06 AM

Spoiler:
These things and people are being summoned. The Wizards and witches are probably doing certain summoning spells incorrectly. Remember the Zerbst family heriloom book? A.K.A. Porno magazine. That was "the book that was summoned." The modern day soldier was also summoned. But not by the head of the academy. By someone else. That soldier just happened to be limping by and was timley enough to lend a hand.

Funny though, that an explosive would blow away a dragon's head. Seriously, dragons/wyrms are supposed to be carapaced creatures. Hard, outter shells protecting their bodies. Even parts of their head.

And understandable, since Louise can't do magic right, she often screws up. Is it not a coincedence that Saito was summoned by accident? After all, Louise has never casted a spell perfectly. Louise was probably supposed to summon something similar to her family name/history.

Anyway, episode 6 is pretty good. This really helps Saito out versus the whole, "Oh you're inferior, like a dog" thing.

And...

Spoiler:
Lol at the shiny sword.

Ashton Aug 15, 2006 04:07 PM

Spoiler:
LAW out of fucking nowhere. That whole scene was fantastic.

masa Aug 19, 2006 09:43 AM

Louise's "SHUT UP!" reminds me of Shana from Shakugan no Shana. And I thought of her as a Shana clone up until episode 6, where she branched off and became her own character. She's still somewhat generic, but not a clone. Saito? He wins. "Your breasts are Zero" is a comment that would leave most guys in their graves. Also, he has Haxx sword skillz. All in all I enjoy it, and look foreward to the next episode.

Tails Aug 19, 2006 01:49 PM

That's because both chataracters (Louise and Shana) have the same voice actor (Rie Kugimiya).

Mojougwe Aug 24, 2006 03:21 PM

Spoiler:
Haxx? Didn't you see the scenes where the runic symbols on his left hand light up/enchant strength? It somehow gives him knowledge on how to use any weapon he touches. Not only that, he gains a boost in agility and strength. So in a sense, the runic symbols give him the power to be a weapons expert.

Saito has probably never used, or learned how to use, a rocket launcher in his entire life so far. But when he touched that weapon, ths supposed 'Staff of Destruction,' his runic symbols lit up and gave him knowledge on how to use it. Immediately he deployed it like a pro. Other factual things such as the launcher's limited ammunition and degree of explosive damage were probably already known by him from other media.

And this 7th episode was pretty good as well. Really liking how Louise is trying to connect with Saito. Well, at least it looks like she's trying.

Sakabadger Aug 30, 2006 11:56 AM

So, uh. Siesta is FAST.

Spoiler:
I was a little disappointed, actually. Going out and doing something like that seems to be more of Kirche's type of thing, not a (perceived as) somewhat shy and reserved girl.

Saito kind of annoys me a little bit too. He doesn't really act cool enough to be getting this kind of "play." I wish he'd drop the obvious joke/insult commentary sometimes and just be a NICE GUY.

Also Tabitha :(

Taco Sep 2, 2006 10:24 PM

No kidding, I was kinda surprised by that little episode XD

Spoiler:
Even still, I want Saito to end up with Siesta even though I know that's not gonna happen D: Commoners ftw

Mojougwe Sep 3, 2006 12:50 PM

Spoiler:
I hope Saito remainds trapped in this magical world forever. Then he can start a rebellion with the Princess and Louise. Commoner uprising, do you need it? With Siesta by his side, victory is surely at hand!

Although, I'm surprised there weren't any questions like, "Hey Saito, why are you cooking yourself? I don't see any chopped vegetables. Nor do you have enough firewood to really turn this boiler up!"

El Ray Fernando Sep 6, 2006 08:12 AM

I have read that this series has 13 episodes, so either quite likely it will have an abrupt ending or less likely a second season.

The next 3 episodes to be aired being (10-12):

Spoiler:
10. The Princess' Request

11. Louise's Marriage

12. The Zero's Secret Treasure

Sakabadger Sep 7, 2006 04:18 PM

Well, this series is based off a series of novels, so I doubt it will have an "abrupt" ending. It'll end as per the ending of a novel (or with an original ending, a la Haruhi) and there'll be plenty of source left for a second season (WE HOPE).

Episode 10:

Spoiler:
SIESTA HAET SAITO. When she was kind of trembling all over I thought she was trying not to laugh (she seems like a very easy-going personality type) but o noes, she was actually mad! Poor Saito. Of course you'll end with Louise, but don't make Siesta mad!

Louise's deredere phase was cute, anyway. Nopan! How daring ;_;

Tails Sep 20, 2006 02:59 PM

SLOW-BITE has finally put out Episode 11 (no word from Kuroneko yet), so rejoice!

I am kinda upset with the way it looks like it's going to end with Louise x Saito for good. Needs more Saito x Siesta or Kirche or something ;___;.

Stupid Louise.

Well I'm officially done with this anime, and I only made it to episode 11. It took the wrong direction far too soon.

Spoiler:
Saito and Louise KISSED!!! :aargh: :cussing:

Oh come on now! It's only episode 11 and they're already kissing. It would make sense if this is a 13 episode show, but it doesn't look like it's shaping up to be only 13 considering all the unanswered questions about how Earth and that new world are connected. Therefore, it's too soon.

Kirche and Siesta were completely removed from the love circle out of nowhere. That was one of the best parts about this anime, and yet it all just seemed to end.

And am I the only one who thinks Louise is a terrible choice for a girlfriend anyway? She treats Saito like garbage 80% of the time anyway and she's not even attractive (unless you like the "bratty rich girl" look).

The love between them was developed in 2 episodes. Other episodes lightly touched on it briefly, but this was just rushed. What happened in 11 was last episode material. It's not even at the halfway mark yet -_-

So I can see what will happen from here on. Saito and Louise will continue a love-hate relationship (but more love than hate). Kirche will continue to flirt a bit but Saito will just completely blow her off until she falls in love with some other guy that randomly comes along, making Kirche forget she ever liked Saito at all. Siesta will become the "good friend" who "just happens" to find herself in a "questionable" situation with Saito, only to get Louise mad and Siesta's heart broken in the end time and time again.

The rest of the plot will probably deal with the baddies mentioned in Episode 11. Once they're defeated, Saito will have the option of going home or staying with Louise, and he'll stay with Louise. The end.

I really did like this anime a lot and I always looked forward to the newest episode...but 11 killed it for me, and I'll probably stop viewing it now until I find some interesting new development that would get me wanting to watch it again.

sjcrik Sep 26, 2006 02:22 AM

well, it is only 13 episodes long so that seems about right. even thou it coulda been expanded to cover 26 or more episodes (which i wish they did), looks like they decided to throw everything together into the last 2 or 3 episodes. pretty typical of a lot of 12/13 episode series =/

Sakabadger Sep 27, 2006 04:20 AM

I'm just gonna toss out that Saito and Louise kiss like TWO SECONDS INTO THE OPENING ANIMATION. If there was ever any doubt about what the final coupling was going to be, well, I thought it was pretty obvious.

PREDICTIONS FOR EPISODE 13:

Spoiler:
Since Zero no Tsukaima is based off a series of novels, I think it's fairly obvious that Saito's going to be sticking around Tristein for a while. However, I don't think it would be lame like "SAITO WE NEED YOU COME BACK FROM JAPAN" (a la the Narnia series), so I figure this time around he's going to stay there.

They'll naturally be able to reproduce enough fuel for the Zero to fly. Albion is waging war against Tristein. Tristein needs a weapon. HAY THE ZERO IS A WEAPON.

Saito will pilot the Zero against Albion, but CLIMAX! The solar eclipse will show up, but Louise will have her life threatened at the same time. Does Saito go home, or does he save Louise?

Obviously, he'll save Louise ("because I'm your familiar!") but wreck the Zero in the process, thus destroying any chance of getting back. Louise will be like "BUT SAITO" and he'll be like "nah it's cool" and they'll kiss and we'll just mope around til season 2 comes. Hooray!

It's kinda annoying that it's the whole lot together, bittorrent isn't the nicest way for me to get files & that's a heck of a lot to re-download, but it works. (Edit: *facepalm* Moved some files around & don't have to redownload any now.)

Also... /me munches on forum for eating his post the first time. D:

I rather like this series. I'm sorta~new to anime, generally like the style but haven't seen much, and.. yeah, I like it but I can see a few of places it could be improved too. Tabitha though... I think all other characters I see like her will be Tabitha-clones to me. :)

I agree, shouldn't they save the rather dramatic moments for the end of the series? Saito kissed Louise about 3-4 times throughout the series

There are reports that new episodes of Zero no Tsukaima are scheduled for next fall! [ link ]

To be Honest, I'm not exactly happy or excited that there may be a second Zero No Tsukaima in fact, i'm one of the few people who was NOT hoping for another one. But if there is i may watch it since it did have pretty nice animation an' all.

Am I the only one angry that we don't get any background information on Saito's life on earth at all? Everytime this kind of anime where some guy gets sucked into another world/universe is done, it's not unusual for them to get a homesick feeling. Seems like Saito didn't really give a damn about his family/friends back home at all.

Which makes him that much cooler. Fuck that sappy mess. The most he longed for was a bath, and you know what he did - he went and fucking made one.

I kinda got the feeling that all of that stuff didn't really matter to him. I'm sure the biggest thing he missed was his laptop and the internet (he takes his laptop with him in the novel, though).

I'm sure there's more info about him and everything else in the novels.

A group called Baka-Tsuki is translating the first novel, if you're interested.

I might check if it's any different from the anime which is why i read manga, So i can get a somewhat different perspective of the same show.
