How Profane Are You?

How often/much do you swear?
Do you chose to? Is it habit?

*AkirA* Jul 7, 2006 03:32 PM

I swear, but Im not someone who gets off on having a filthy mouth like 90% of middle schoolers now days. I use it in context to spice up sentences. Pharses like "You gotta be kidding me," are only made better by inserting the word fuck.

Its something I do around people who dont mind it. Swearing isnt something that should offend in my opinion. Its not like having a smart mouth, or cutting someone down. Its just a word.

BlueEdge Jul 7, 2006 03:33 PM

I try not to swear, at all. So far I haven't.

scotty Jul 7, 2006 03:35 PM

I only swear when something pisses me off, or when I get injured.

DarkLink2135 Jul 7, 2006 03:39 PM

I swear a lot, but normally only when I'm angry. I have a very weird form of epilepsy you won't find in any textbooks that kind of intertwines with a mild form of Tourrettes. While the epileptic symptoms I have gotten under control, when I'm angry those two mix a bit and I let out the oddest strings of swearing you have probably ever heard :p.

In normal speech I don't, unless it's typing.

Dullenplain Jul 7, 2006 03:40 PM

Normally I don't, the worst that would come out of my mouth on a normal basis are hell and damn. I swear harder when I'm under great stress or angered.

Lately I've been trying to tone down my profanity after 6 weeks of field tripping with some of my geo friends when all of the nasty words were flying around and I couldn't help but join in.

EmmDoubleEw Jul 7, 2006 05:28 PM

Hahahah shameful, I'm the only fuckin' fuck who swears all the fuckin' time.

>.>

Although rarely on forums.

People say it's in my French blood :D.

Rydia Jul 7, 2006 07:07 PM

Not so much. I don't normally get very angry to the point that I let out a string of swear words. I'm actually more surprised that some of the younger teenagers have a tendency to swear a lot. At least from what I've heard while at malls.

Sir VG Jul 7, 2006 07:09 PM

I find this thread fuckin offensive. ^^;;

I do it out of habit, more often if I know there's nobody within ear shot.

Kaiten Jul 7, 2006 07:10 PM

Depends entirely on the circumstances. But at home I swear sometimes, at work rarely and online often. All put together the swearing from my internet (mis)adventures tilts this into the 'often' tier.

Cetra Jul 7, 2006 07:16 PM

I used to swear pretty often when I was younger before I met my current girlfriend. She believed swearing was a form of disrespect and it has always bothered her when she hears someone swear. Thinking about it I actually agree with her and really worked on toning my swearing down. I'm glad I did as it has also done wonders to improve my professionalism at work.

I've noticed I'm still pretty bad when it comes to typing it online though. Hearing yourself say it and watching yourself type it seem to be two totally different things it would seem.

Such a Lust for Revenge! Jul 7, 2006 07:16 PM

I think I swear more often online nowadays than off. I guess I can still swear as much these days as ten years ago, but now I have control and know when not to. But yeah, so long as you don´t use it as a crutch to a poor vocabulary, I don´t see it as that big of deal.

Fuck me man.

Arkhangelsk Jul 7, 2006 07:19 PM

I never used to swear. It just didn't really work on me...it worked on other people, but for me to say 'Fuck' only caused shock and/or laughter. But when I went away to college my roommate cussed all the time, so I got in the habit of saying 'fuck this' or 'what the fuck?' quite often.

So now it really depends on who I'm around and where I am. I mean, as soon as I'm at home around my old friends, I revert back to my non-cussing ways. Same deal around my parents, although since I'm an 'adult' my mother says fuck a who~ole lot more than she used to, and my dad always says fuc-freakin. He can't get used to cussing around me :).

Eleo Jul 7, 2006 07:19 PM

The problem I find with answering is this is that profanity has different definitions to different groups. For example, my parents consider "hell" and "damn" as curse words to use sparingly and only in serious situations. Freshman year in high school, I was astounded at how many teachers had no problem with using profanity; there was even a priest/monk who probably have the worst swearing problem I've ever seen; meanwhile I saw a student get a detention from another teacher for saying "bitch".

Over the years here in I've seen profanity become a lot less shocking. I remember watching The Shield on FX and not even realizing characters were saying "shit" freely until the show ended. Let's not forget that one SouthPark episode. Supposedly now it's okay to say "fuck" on network TV so much as it's not referring to fornication. (Admittedly I've never heard it said on network TV.) When I was very young, just saying "damn" would pretty much get me slapped, but nowadays my parents wouldn't even flinch if I said it.

So I can't answer the question with a definite answer. All I can say is that I use every word up until "fuck" fairly often, but it depends on the circumstances. It's hard to be less vague without being boringly specific.

nuttyturnip Jul 7, 2006 07:45 PM

I almost never swear in real life or on the Internet, but it seems like everyone my age does. I'm starting to think I need to pick up the habit, lest I seem like some stuck up prude.

Do only what feels natural, if it's awkward to cuss, don't; if it feels fine and feels 'right' go right ahead.
Changing your nature (for the worse) so it'll improve your image, is the worst reason to change yourself. Need I insert a drug use analogy here?

Rockgamer Jul 7, 2006 08:17 PM

I'm not really offended by swear words, as I use them quite often both in real life and on the internet. I just use them as a regular part of my language, so I don't even think of them as I use them. Of course, if I was in a professional situation, or around someone who I explicitly knew did not like profanity, I wouldn't use these words.

Fleshy Fun-Bridge Jul 7, 2006 08:34 PM

This depends entirely on who I am talking two, where I am, and who I am with. When talking with my family, I never use profane language. The conversations we have call for more constructive use of the language than using profanity to make the point. When I am with my friends, its a bit different. If we are talking about someone I really don't like then I'll let fly with some f-bombs, s-words, and maybe even the big C. But I don't use it in ever sentence.

Summonmaster Jul 7, 2006 09:07 PM

I too seem to use swear words selectively.

I never swear when I'm angry, but rather use words to emphasize my excitement, and even then only with certain people: eg. "oh shit!"
I used to never swear, but then I surprise my friends every time since I gave up on that and they don't expect that kind of language from me apparently. I'm not the type though, to throw in "fuck" at the end of every single sentence, or "fucking" in mid-sentence, for EVERY sentence like some people.

I will swear at the air when no one is around and I am playing against a "fucking" cheap boss like Jinpachi or Sissy. The same goes for parts in a game that feel almost impossible like lightning dodging.

At any kind of work though, that doesn't even pop into my mind, ever.

Schadenfreude Jul 7, 2006 09:24 PM

I rarely swear when I'm talking in English. Yes, occasionally I do let out a "fuck" or a "shit" but that totally depends on the situation and who I'm talking with. In Malay, however... well... I guess it's summed up by the fact that I greet some people by going "oi <swear word>".

When I talk to myself, though, I tend to swear a lot. When I'm playing a game or practicing guitar I sometimes let out some profanities if I get frustrated.

I've been trying to cut down, and it seems I've succeeded a bit. Although whenever I stub my toe or something I tend to let out some profanities.

Mercury Blue Jul 7, 2006 09:57 PM

Almost never in real life, online a little bit. I must not curse too much in rl because recently I said "Damn it" while talking to a friend and her jaw about hit the floor. :\

DarkLink2135 Jul 7, 2006 10:36 PM

My roomate @ college laughed whenever I cussed like how I mentioned earlier, and interestingly enough, that's the best way anyone has ever gotten me to stop, makes me realize the absurdity of it. And it wasn't an extremely obnoxious laugh, it was kind of a quite, smiling laugh that's hard to detect. It's hard to explain, it's like when you are trying to hide laughing because you are afraid the person is going to rip your fucking head off. I've never hurt anybody in my rage (well, since I got my symptoms under control as mentioned earlier) but a lot of things (most frequently my keyboard) have suffered my wrath. I once destroyed my printer with a metal pipe because it pissed me off, lol. That was a funny site to see, I just wish I would have had a way to view it from the outside.

Newbie1234 Jul 7, 2006 10:47 PM

I'd say I'm in the middle of the pack when it comes to using swear words. I'm not afraid to use them, but I do try and actually think first before throwing them out of my mouth.

I've met my share of people who seem compelled to put in at least 1 or 2 "fuck's" in every sentence, and it really sounds ridiculous when you pay attention. Though I love movies like Snatch and Lock Stock, they definitely are certainly a bad influence when it comes to profanity.

Immortal Jul 7, 2006 11:04 PM

Not quite every other word, but I do drop an F-bomb quite frequently. I guess I can attribute it to whoever I am with though. Don't quite swear as much around my Grandparents as I do around my friends.

kat Jul 7, 2006 11:31 PM

When I want to stress a point, I say fuck a lot but otherwise it's shit, crap and ass.

I work with kids so I have to watch my language around them.

Fatt Jul 7, 2006 11:32 PM

It all depends on the place and time for me. When I work stagecrew, I swear like a sailor. "What? You have a fuckin' problem with me? I'll punch your cl** so hard you'll have two periods this month!" or "fuck with me and be prepared to bend over, cause I'll fuck you till you cry for more or you cry for mommie. Either don't matter because your my bitch."

I omitted the c word in case it affects NSFW rules.

Outside of stagecrew, I try not to have such a fowl mouth. I stress using a broader vocabulary when I can.

xen0phobia Jul 7, 2006 11:39 PM

picked up the habit a little in college, but still i'd have to say i fit in the rarely catagory. I used to absolutely never cuss, but now when the situations right i'll let one slip. It doesn't suit me very well though. It's funny how it just works with some people but with other's its just weird.

splur Jul 8, 2006 12:59 AM

Ever since I went to Asia where swearing outloud in English was never noticed, I've been swearing uncontrollably. I swore infront of a whole group of familes/kids during Canada day. Didn't even notice it, got lots of dirty looks. Also swore in some stores today. I've got to get rid of the habit.

Wall Feces Jul 8, 2006 01:00 AM

Often for me... My roommate falls under the "every fuckin work is fuckin fuck" category, and I unconsciously picked it up from living with him. I try to control it now, because it makes me look like an idiot.

Paco Jul 8, 2006 01:05 AM

I have spent the better part of my life swearing and cursing. I can't really help it anymore, I curse all the time. Goddamnit, I even used to curse at church because my parents would make me go.

Now, I could give a fuck less. I get dirty looks from mothers shielding their children from the EVIL THAT IS PROFANITY, but I figure I only have to give the kid a few years before mine or someone else's cursing turns him into a dropout junkie.

Remember kids: Sticks and stones break bones. Bad words will HURT AMERICA'S MOTHERFUCKING FUTURE.

K_ Takahashi Jul 8, 2006 01:09 AM

If you look I usually have more than the needed obceneties in whatever post most of the time.

IRL, the language is basically the same, even to 12 y/o's (come on, I damn well know they curse up a storm, hell, I have since I was 10 (from what I can remember anyways.

SonicPanda Jul 8, 2006 01:24 AM

Sometimes for me. I swear occasionally for emphasis, but most of it comes out when I'm gaming. My friends, on the other hand, make me sound like an angel-boy.

Cobra Commander Jul 8, 2006 04:32 PM

I never used to swear, but I remember using really wacked out and childish putdowns so my friends got embarassed and tried ot teach me how to swear. Then one day while running in the rain to catch the bus, I was saying "shoot, shoot, shoot" in my head but what was coming out was "shit, shit, shit"

And its just goes downhill from there

Dee Jul 9, 2006 02:37 AM

I chose sometimes, and this is out of choice. I never try to say fuck, I don't know why. I guess it sounds extremely ugly to me. However, I like to use shit, crap, damn, and ass anytime I can find it funny to do so. For example, I look at a book and say, "That's some long ass book you're reading". Other examples like "he's taking a crap", "holy shit that's some gross picture", or something to that extent. Nothing insulting.

ComCrimson Jul 9, 2006 07:10 AM

I do swear quite often. It's become a habit over the years i think. I don't like go into full strings of swearing but i do swear even when it sometimes isn't really necesary. Doesn't help that all my friends do as well so it kind of rubs off onto me

Lee-chan Jul 9, 2006 02:30 PM

Up until a certain point in middle school, my mouth was as clean as a whistle. In fact, I was afraid of swearing.

But then I started, and all hell broke loose. Now have a side which can be compared to that proverbial sailor, but that's only at certain times with the closest friends... 95% of the time at most. At certain other times, a few expletives might color my speech. But overall my mouth is still pretty clean and even formal.

U K Narayan Jul 9, 2006 03:01 PM

I haven't sworn in awhile, but in some cases - I'll swear under my breath. I never get to the point where I openly use profanity.

wvlfpvp Jul 9, 2006 03:05 PM

I curse. Very goddamn often.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Jul 9, 2006 11:17 PM

I rarely censor my language, sadly. This can be problematic in public places when I say something oblivious to the people around me.

I get lots of scowls and sometimes a dirty look because people just can't have their kids overhear the word "shit," but they can totally let their kids watch T2 without batting an eye at it.

But yea. I swear extremely frequently. In fact, I think when I am in traffic, I say nothing BUT profanity.

PiccoloNamek Jul 9, 2006 11:21 PM

I never curse in public, but when I'm alone, I swear all the time.

Gecko3 Jul 10, 2006 01:03 AM

It's strange. When I was younger, I was usually able to watch my mouth (unless I was really angry for whatever reason). Sometimes a bad word slipped, but for the most part I kept clean.

When I joined the Army though, I began cussing quite frequently (not every other word, but I found myself using it in casual conversations. I think part of it was cause a lot of other soldiers cursed a lot too, and it kind of rubbed off on me).

Nowadays, I will generally only swear if I'm talking with friends, and even then, I try not to do it too much. I usually try to avoid typing swear words while posting online, although sometimes I let one or two slip out as well, depending on the mood I'm in and sometimes the content of the stuff I'm replying to/asking about online.

In a professional setting though, I can watch my tongue pretty well, and never use them when talking to my supervisors/superiors.

I hate to say it though, sometimes cussing is a little easier way to express my thoughts :p

WolfDemon Jul 10, 2006 01:20 AM

I curse fairly often, but only around my friends and my aunt and cousins. The rest of my family would probably have a coronary if I even said "damn" around them. I don't find curse words to be offensive, as they're just words, god dammit, but the morons who consist of about 75% of Xbox Live who say "fuck" every other word just get on my nerves.

Also, since when is "crap" a curse word?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that it's really the only acceptable form of communication when you're on the road.

"YOU COCKMUNCHER! DON'T FUCKING SLOW THE FUCK DOWN OVER THE TRAIN TRACKS! YOU DRIVE A MOTHERFUCKING SUBURBAN! IT'S NOT FUCKING GOING TO FALL THE FUCK APART! YOUR FUCKSTOCK IS SHIT, CUMGUZZLER!"

Lady Miyomi Jul 10, 2006 02:07 AM

It seems the only time I swear these days is when I get really mad, namely if someone does something to me that pisses me off. I usually have a high tolerance for BS and can look the other way, though. However, after awhile, it wears on me and I can't help letting loose words here and there when I'm pissed.

Craze Jul 10, 2006 03:03 AM

I restraint myself from swearing, but usually I only swear if I'm really angry or I get injured (like getting my finger clipped) And I try substituting f*ck with other words like crap, stupid etc.

SpaceOddity Jul 10, 2006 04:03 AM

Pretty much never. I was raised not to swear, so I didn't really pick up the habit. Besides, my parents would probably be shell-shocked if they heard me cuss. lol.

Nexius Jul 10, 2006 05:04 AM

I dunno, I never picked up on swearing all that much. I cuss very rarely... Just about the only time I will is when I'm shocked or such.

Alice Jul 10, 2006 06:07 AM

I swear sometimes, but only to add emphasis to something or when I'm really, really angry, and never around people who I know will be offended by it.

The thing I hate about habitual swearers is that it's apparently very difficult to just turn it off in situations where it's not appropriate. It happens all the time when I'm in line at the store or just walking through the mall with my 8-year-old child. I'll pass by a group of kids and one of them will yell "Fuck you, motherfucker!" at the other one, just as we're passing by. And I never know whether to cry or punch someone.

Nahual Jul 10, 2006 07:24 AM

I swear only when something can get me to be angry. It takes a lot to get me angry. And when I am, I still probably won't need to use a cuss word. The only other time is when I write a song and just can't seem to find a word that will have the same meaning, or sound as good.

Ex: "..if you don't even listen, why do I give a crap then?"
"..if you don't even listen, why do I give a darn then?"
"..if you don't even listen, why do I give a SHIT then?" -that's the winner.

electric_eye Jul 10, 2006 09:18 AM

I rarely swear in front of my parents, when I do it tends to come out in a mumble. I hardly swear out of the blue. When I get angry then I am more likely to lose it and swear. However I figure it is best to take it out on some stupid videogames and not others.

KCJ506 Jul 11, 2006 06:57 AM

I usually say "hell" or "damn". Only when I get really pissed off or hurt is when I use other swear words.

EDIT: And when I'm quoting someone from a movie or videogame.

Metal Sphere Jul 11, 2006 04:43 PM

Well, I swear but not very often. Though the filth really starts pouring out of my mouth if I end up crashing into a difficulty spike in a game or a bad injury (shins, Jesus).

Not to mention that the kids at school convinced me that endless cursing makes you look like an idiot.

Max POWER Jul 11, 2006 06:30 PM

I very rarely say swears, but I think them all the time. When I think, I don't think out every word like when one speaks, and I'm sure most of you are the same. However, when I swear in my head, the words are spoken very clearly. ^_^;; Like, when I stub my toe, I'll say "Owie!" or something kinda babyish, but in my mind, I'll think, or rather say out loud in my head, "Owshitfuckdamn" about twice or ten times, depending on the pain or mood I'm in.

TheReverend Jul 11, 2006 07:02 PM

I have recently started picking up swearing, though not in large amounts, more like a subtle shift. I've grown up in circles where it is very looked down upon to say anything like "hell, damn, shit, ass, christ" and especially "fuck". For me, I've picked up hell, ass, and shit because the alternatives just lack so much these days (aka: what the heck/that kicks butt/Crap!). I need more meaning and weight behind my words and the explitives are just the remedy. So, I've adopted these few and held off on the others.

It feels good to join the mass of cussing fools :P.

Robo Jesus Jul 12, 2006 01:19 AM

Profanity is the crutch of inarticulate motherfuckers.

Paco Jul 12, 2006 01:38 AM

MOTHERFUCKER! It's Robo Jesus out of FUCKING NOWHERE!

I don't see profanity as a crutch though. A crutch implies disability. Think of it as a language enhancer. :D

SemperFidelis Jul 12, 2006 10:56 PM

I discovered an amazing talent of mine. I am so calm and tame at my internship but when I'm outside with friends, I am like a fucking pirate.

Paco Jul 12, 2006 11:09 PM

I assume that by "pirate" you mean "ass-pirate", right?

SemperFidelis Jul 12, 2006 11:11 PM

No, I mean like "Argh, get the fuck out before I grab your nuts with my hook arm!" kinda pirate.

Domino Jul 14, 2006 06:03 PM

I occasionally swear. It's normally me getting angry or pissed off at something. Which now that I come to think of it, isn't actually all that often.

DragoonKain Jul 15, 2006 02:24 AM

I do use racial slurs all the time when with friends. I use them jokingly though, no racism involved. Like I'll tell me friend to stop being a honkey and get me a soda. I know a lot of people are real sensitive with that stuff, but oh well, I'm not.

But as far as words like fuck and shit go, I use them but not every 2 seconds like some people.

Pandaman Jul 15, 2006 07:33 AM

Often. It's funny, online I don't tend to swear very much because I have time to think about what I say, and I also tend to think that people who swear a lot sound dumber than people who don't. Mum was pretty strict on me as a kid too, but she eventually just stopped saying anything about it and I became this profane jackass that has to tone down his behavior for most social situations.

Krelian Jul 15, 2006 11:53 AM

Having dwelled in a British boarding school since the age of eight, I can comfortably say that four-letter words are fundamental building blocks of the English language.

Vampiro Jul 15, 2006 12:30 PM

If the situation is fitting and calls for a "fuck" or a "shit," I have no problem saying it. It's fairly rare though. Maybe twice to three times a week. Online though, it's a pretty different story. It can range from zero to countless within a day. Not sure why that is...

Kensaki Jul 15, 2006 02:17 PM

I swear when I get anoyed and above but rarely when I'm talking normally. Of course these days I tend to keep shut unless something bugs me so I tend to seem more of a profane guy than I really am.

Krelian Jul 15, 2006 03:08 PM

It's because profanity is GRIM AND KVLT.

Piano Guy Jul 15, 2006 03:32 PM

Well, I swear sometimes. I try not to when I'm around certain people it offends, and I usually only do it when I'm angry, but I have been known to let out a couple of casual damns, shits, and fucks every once in a while!

janus zeal Jul 15, 2006 05:28 PM

i say crap and hell and stuff, but i rarely say anything worse.
i think that people that sware all the time just sound dumb.

Quote:

idk if robo jesus was being sarcastic, but i agree anyways.

Mr. E Jul 15, 2006 06:35 PM

I have started to use profane language more often lately. Mainly because of the fact that I've been a dealer at a casino for the past year. It isn't the best place for keeping the language clean from day to day. A game of craps or high limit baccarat throws any chance of a not hearing it out of the window.

ashmountains Jul 16, 2006 03:37 AM

I never really sweared much. A damn here, crap there, and hell would be my limit. But if I feel very angry about something, fuck doesn't seem so harsh to me.

fix'd. It's more appropriate.

Angel of Light Jul 16, 2006 11:17 AM

I personally don't swear very often. When I was a kid I was frightened to death to actually swear, because even if the slightest cuss word came out of my mouth if my family was around I got severly punished.

I guess the swearing got a little worse in grade 12 and when I was in college. I swear from time to time. Only if I need to put out some unwanted aggression. I usually swear mainly in times of stress or disgust. I usually take out all my swearing when it comes to insane video game bosses, and troublesome levels.

Koneko Jul 16, 2006 12:57 PM

I swear very casually around friends (and maybe sometimes with my parents who really don't care as long as I don't swear in front of my grandfolks). I'm pretty good about not swearing when appropriate (like work or in front of kids).

Majin yami Jul 16, 2006 01:53 PM

All the fucking time. Generally with some blasphemy thrown in for good measure.

Safer Serge Jul 16, 2006 03:06 PM

Only when people give me a fucking reason to be profane... in other words, all the time.

J-Man Jul 16, 2006 04:04 PM

I only ever say it when I'm either flaming at someone, pretending to flame at someone, stressing or emphasising a point, or quoting someone who swears. This ends up with me swearing quite a bit

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 10:54 AM

Mm.
I'll say "the ess-word" at myself occasionally. "damn" appears in my vocabulary, if that counts.

But I try not to swear. Among my little circle, it seems to be more of a deal when I swear, compared to others. I even purposefully typo the infamous "omfg" as "omhd" or something similar to avoid it. ><;;
Yes, "wtf?" does go to "qtr?". -.-

I also try not to swear at someone (other than myself, of course...we're all exception to our own rules ><;;). I might swear at something, or at a particular event, but I don't like it when people swear at each other, or call each other "~ing idiot"s or what not.
I don't remember the last time I did swear at someone, if such a time existed.

I don't know - I try to have respect for people, I suppose.

So do I. But then again, they're only people... :/

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 11:04 AM

Well, even so...last time I checked, I was one too *sigh*.
So by abiding by the Golden Rule of ethics (treat others as you want them to treat you), I guess I'm forced to not call everyone ~ing morons; since, although I undoubtedly am one, I wouldn't want to have it said to me in such a harsh manner.

xD

Alice Jul 18, 2006 11:08 AM

It's really the same principle as smoking in public, Ence. Your rights end where others' begin. I would never dream of criticizing someone who chooses to curse, excessively or otherwise. But people really should try to be respectful to others when they're in public. If you want to curse, fine by me. Just please don't assume that everyone else should be OK with it. In other words, say what you want to say, just don't blast it too loudly. I think that's reasonable.

Paco Jul 18, 2006 11:30 AM

See, this is where I have a problem with that. I completely understand the smoking; we've been shown proof that second hand smoke is really as bad, if not worse, for your health so smoking it around other people is almost intentionally wanting to bring them harm. I have yet to find proof that my cursing is going to turn someone's kid into a dropout junkie.

Alice Jul 18, 2006 11:36 AM

Obviously it wouldn't. It just undermines some parents' value systems, which you have no right to do. Some people purposely shield their children from movies, TV shows and situations where they might be exposed to things that THE PARENT (not Joe Q. Public) finds offensive. Some of these things are curse words, drug/alcohol references, violence, sex, etc.

Whether the average man on the street agrees with these parents or not is irrelevant. It's a simple matter of respect. You have to understand that not everyone is comfortable using curse words, and that someone might be offended by them.

Vampiro Jul 18, 2006 04:12 PM

Exactly. It doesn't matter if it harms someone or not, much like smoking, a lot of people don't appreciate being sworn around. If you feel the need to swear, know who it's around and know whether the situation calls for it. There's a reason both swearing and smoking are usually frowned upon by the general public.

I understand that. I'm not arguing about undermining any way that a parent feels like raising their child. But it's naive to think that parents can shield their children from these things forever and EVERYWHERE they go.

I respect a parent's right to shield a child from these things in their home and other designated places since, for example, I obviously wouldn't come to their house as a guest and curse like it's my personal pub.

In a "family restaurant", per se, I obvioiusly watch my language a lot more often than I normally would because I understand that the environment does not cater to my swearing. It just amuses me, for example, when I'm walking down the street in Pismo with my friends and having a typical curse-filled conversation like WE ALWAYS do and I get parents shooting me these dirty looks like, "You fucking spic I was on the street first, you have no right to swear around my child."

I apologize very much, ma'am... But this isn't your sacrosanct home and there's no laws against me cursing on public city streets... Yet.

Yeah, like I said... There's no law against it YET. Smoking has already been banned from pretty much every place that isn't one's personal home. It won't be long before this "for the children" mindset censors my sailor's mouth in those places as well.

starslight Jul 18, 2006 04:47 PM

I try to swear as little as possible, but the cuss words tumble out anyway when I'm angry about something. I avoid doing it in public because it draws dirty looks from parents and old people. I don't really get off on offending people.

Don't care if other people do it, though, as long as it's not every other word, in which case the profanity becomes a distraction rather than a point of emphasis.

It doesn't matter if there's a law or not. Many things you just shouldn't do are completely legal. As for the last part, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. If anything, based on the direction our culture is currently moving in, swear words will be phased out. Ass, bitch, shit, etc are all ready pretty common on TV and other forms of media. I wouldn't doubt that the rest are following close behind.

Mithos Jul 18, 2006 05:24 PM

I love the way that ethical debate seldom goes anywhere.
(I love it so much I want to drop my philosophy and ethics course. ><;;)

Sorry, ignore me. xD

Vampiro Jul 18, 2006 05:45 PM

Debates that go no where are often the best debates to partake in.

Paco Jul 18, 2006 05:55 PM

So I've heard. There's a whole swarm of folks that can attest to that.

CryHavoc Jul 18, 2006 06:47 PM

Online i'm very tame. In real life i cuss and swear so much i constantly get into fights because people would think i'm dissing them.

I still do it anyway.

Deusanimus Jul 18, 2006 08:53 PM

To be honest, I'm normally not quite so profane. I'm actually more prone to blasphemies, but I do have my days when I swear like a boat full of navy guys.

Signify Jul 19, 2006 06:21 PM

I'm pretty profane when I choose to be, especially when I'm angry. I try to tone it down, though. A lot of prospective significant others seem to find it to be a turn off. Blah.

Bernard Black Jul 19, 2006 06:29 PM

If I know that a particular group of people is unlikely to let it slip, I won't swear. Otherwise it's just habit for me. I get worse when I'm nervous or angry, but apart from that, swearing fits into my everyday vocabulary more frequently than I would like it to.

projectg Jul 21, 2006 12:54 PM

I swear too effin much. But not every other effen word though. :D

my word... where did that come from? ^-^

Retriever II Jul 22, 2006 04:42 PM

Usually I'm not profane. But I seem to more than make up for that in work. My boss especially, has come up with some very creative expressions when the computers don't behave the way they should. Our data person also came up with the "fuck-you" dance which is pretty hilarious to watch.

daguuy Jul 22, 2006 08:31 PM

i rarely cuss in public unless i get pissed off. then i cuss almost every word i say

Blackfate Jul 23, 2006 08:52 AM

There are only times that I swear and that is when I either get annoyed with someone or angry at someone or something. I remember this video from World of Warcraft where this guy was leading a raid to kill a Dragon and every other word from his mouth was "fuck". It's amusing I suppose and this really didn't have much to do with anything but I thought of as I was typing this response.

yangxu Jul 23, 2006 11:15 AM

I hardly swear, the word fuck not in my collection of swear words, the most I could say is shit, and that's only under extreme circumstances... I use bastard or hell more commonly these days.

Sin Ansem Jul 23, 2006 11:38 PM

I am a sad little man who curses more often in real life than he does on the internet.

I don't curse in front of my parents or anyone who is considerably older or younger than me.
