Milk chocolate or dark chocolate?

What do you prefer? Milk chocolate or dark chocolate? A lot of people tell me they hate dark chocolate and I don't get it at all. To me it's so much richer and a lot more flavorful than milk chocolate. Also it goes so much better with other stuff like chocolate covered cherrys or choclate mints. It's always so much better using dark chocolate. I like dark chocolate a hundred times better than milk.

Dalkaen Jul 7, 2006 02:11 AM

Milk chocolate is a hundred times better, actually. Dark chocolate's not too bad, but it simply doesn't compare. :p It's too bitter.

Dee Jul 7, 2006 03:38 AM

This is a no brainer. Dark chocolate consumes me. And it tastes oh so much better than milk chocolate. Milk chocolate is just so formulaic, but dark has that mystery to it that you can't help but love it.

Kairyu Jul 7, 2006 04:09 AM

Well I like dark chocolates far more if its covering something. Maybe a cherry or a coffee bean. Otherwise milk chocolate is the one I would pick over and over again.

So uh, milk chocolate for me.

Rockgamer Jul 7, 2006 05:05 AM

Milk chocolate for me. I'll eat dark chocolate if it's the only thng that's there, but it's really not that good. It's just not sweet enough to be any good most of the time.

xSummonerYUnax Jul 7, 2006 06:52 AM

I like milk chocolate better. Dark chocolate is also fine as long as the bitterness is tolerable, but I would definitely go for the milk when given the choice between the two.

Dullenplain Jul 7, 2006 01:53 PM

Milk chocolate I like by itself and is best in overtly sweet things like candies.

Dark chocolate I prefer with something, like a dessert which requires a flavor that doesn't necessarily need to be as sweet.

Complicated, I know.

Fleshy Fun-Bridge Jul 7, 2006 01:56 PM

Dark Choclate. Milk chocolate is just too plain sweet for me, and too much of it makes me fill sick. Dark Choclate, on the other hand, has a flavor filled with complexity not just sweetness. Sweet, bitter, nutty, floral, its all there.

BlueEdge Jul 7, 2006 03:26 PM

Dark chocolate, which I prefer, is much more of an acquired taste. You have to learn to appreciate the bitter taste. But yeah, I don't mind milk chocolate, but now a fan of white chocolate.

scotty Jul 7, 2006 03:30 PM

I prefer milk chocolate, but don't mind dark chocolate. If there was a bowl of milk chocolate on a table next to a bowl of dark chocolate, I will eat them both.

YeOldeButchere Jul 7, 2006 04:18 PM

Dark chocolate. Good dark chocolate. The more bitter, the better.

Not to say milk chocolate isn't any good, but I just don't like it as much. The "good/bad" chocolate ratio seems to be higher for dark chocolate than it is for milk chocolate, too.

Freelance Jul 7, 2006 04:25 PM

Milk chocolate. I can't stand dark chocolate. The taste is like, bleh. Milk chocolate all the way.

DragoonKain Jul 7, 2006 08:45 PM

I never found dark chocolate bitter. I just find it very rich and sweet.

Rydia Jul 7, 2006 10:28 PM

I don't mind either one. Although I tend to go for milk chocolate often, I can tolerate dark chocolate unlike others I know. Sometimes I find milk chocolate too sweet though.

Soluzar Jul 7, 2006 10:38 PM

Milk chocolate is good for a lot of things. When ever you mix chocolate and something else, it has to be the milk chocolate for me. However, if I want to just eat piece of chocolate, it has to be dark.

Ryuu Jul 7, 2006 10:52 PM

I don't mind either one, but if I had to choose I would probably choose milk chocolate over dark chocolate.

Visavi Jul 7, 2006 11:05 PM

I love both of them in their own way. Dark chocolate is supposedly better for you, but milk chocolate has a lighter flavor for desserts. However, organic dark chocolate is too bitter for me. It's funny to see the expression on my sibling's milk chocolate loving face when I made them try it ;).

Same. It seems to be a much more flavorful chocolate, and therefore gets my pick.

Fatt Jul 7, 2006 11:58 PM

I'm not a big fan of chocolate either way, but if I have to choose on just a straight dark or milk choice, I'll take milk. If I have a glass of milk with my chocolate, I'll take the dark.

I'm still waiting for some joker to come out and demand white chocolate be added to the poll.

That should be a bannable offense.

YeOldeButchere Jul 8, 2006 12:47 AM

Actually, I don't hate white chocolate. Some of it is actually quite good. Sure, there's a lot of crap, as with milk chocolate, but if you actually find some decent one, then it's good.

But I do agree it's not exactly the same as milk and dark chocolate. If anything it's a distinct category of "chocolate derivatives".

SonicEchidna Jul 8, 2006 05:56 AM

Milk chocolate all the way. Dark chocolate just tastes horrible to me, but I'll eat it if that's the only thing around. Or if I'm just desperate for a chocolate fix.

Bernard Black Jul 8, 2006 06:08 AM

It depends how you buy it. In bars on its own, definately milk chocolate. But if it's a coating or if it's going with something else, then plain chocolate (eg I <3 jaffa cakes). It's too rich for me, if I have more than a couple of pieces of plain I feel sick. But it does taste nice.

Shoeless Jul 8, 2006 02:02 PM

I hate milk chocolate. Dark chocolate hits the spot.

Conqueso Jul 8, 2006 07:18 PM

Dark chocolate can be really good, depending on how dark it is. My mom buys this 90% cocoa stuff that literally tastes like dirt, but I know that's the exception, not the norm. Still, milk chocolate is more dependable--I've never had to rinse my mouth out after eating it, I can tell you that much--so it kind of evens out.

And I like white chocolate :(

Fire On Ice Jul 8, 2006 08:46 PM

I like milk chocolate when it's on it's own or possibly with peanut butter, but if there's some sort of super sugary filling then dark is better, it kinda balances it out. Like those Laura Secord eggs they sell before easter, perfect example.

Acro-nym Jul 8, 2006 08:57 PM

I prefer milk chocolate. I can't really describe what it is about dark chocolate that makes it taste so unappealing to me, but that's the way it tastes. Of course, it has been a while since I've had some.

Visavi Jul 8, 2006 09:41 PM

It's hard to find white chocolate around here that doesn't have a gritty texture. I like the main taste of white chocolate, but the texture of the white chocolate in this region is gritty.

Summonmaster Jul 8, 2006 10:52 PM

I'm going to assume that Milk Chocolate is the kind of chocolate used Hershey's Cookies and Cream chocolate bar. If so, then I prefer Milk over Dark several fold.
If there is brown milk chocolate too, then I honestly could care less about whether my chocolate is milk or dark. I probably haven't eaten so much chocolate to be able to distinguish the two.

kat Jul 9, 2006 02:59 AM

I'll agree to disagree with everyone in this thread because I hate chocolate, period.

But back when I was a kid and loved the stuff, I'd rather eat milk or white, which really isn't chocolate at all but cocoa butter. So for all intents and purposes, eating white chocolate bars is like eating a stick of sweetened butter fat. Which thinking about that now really grosses me out which is probably why, again, I depise chocolate.

Cobra Commander Jul 10, 2006 01:51 AM

I have always like milk chocolate, I tried dark a couple of times and man I just can't stand it, it's hard to describe it is like it has no taste at first but then it gets real bad after that.

Milk Chocholate is FTW?

*AkirA* Jul 10, 2006 03:13 AM

Its more about the mood im in, but dark chocolate tends to have a more subdued flavor. Milk chocolate is better by itself, but dark is better on almonds, cheerys, raisins etc.

Nuh Jul 10, 2006 07:37 AM

Dark.

However, eating dark chocolate while drinking a glass of milk combines the best of both worlds.

Nexius Jul 10, 2006 07:45 AM

While milk chocolate is wonderfully satisfying in its own right, I enjoy dark chocolate much, much more. I prefer that bitter taste it has.

On a side note, I can't stand white chocolate. Just... Doesn't taste right. Blech.

Thoompie Jul 10, 2006 08:43 AM

Milk chocolate, definitely. I really hate dark, beacause it's so bitter. My GP told me to eat dark chocolate before bed time, for a while, to make my coughing stop, but I stopped eating it after 2 times.

I really adore the milk chocolate of Cote d'Or, a Belgian brand i believe, It's actually very expensive but they make the best chocolate in the world

(actually, sometimes i like white even better)

Alice Jul 10, 2006 08:50 AM

White chocolate isn't even chocolate. It's sugar and oils and flavorings. There's no chocolate at all in white chocolate.

I prefer dark chocolate. It's less sweet and like someone said earlier, more complex, although it's definitely an acquired taste. Not to mention the fact that dark chocolate is good for you. It lowers blood pressure and contains tons of antioxidants.

Well, it contains cocoa butter which is part of the cacao bean.

Doesn't make it chocolate, I guess, but it isn't just "sugar and oils and flavorings".

Alice Jul 10, 2006 12:27 PM

Cocoa butter isn't what constitutes chocolate. Body lotions contain cocoa butter and they're not chocolate.

Miles Jul 10, 2006 02:25 PM

Dark chocolate is too strong for me, unless I have a glass of milk next to me. Milk chocolate has good flavor. :3

Lurker Jul 10, 2006 05:34 PM

Dark chocolate all the way! I like the bitter taste of chocolates.

Domino Jul 14, 2006 06:21 PM

Milk chocolate is the better of the two. Dark chocolate is too bitter for my liking.

This is something I can agree with entirely. It should have a different name.

Mucknuggle Jul 14, 2006 07:04 PM

Milk chocolate is by far the winner for me. It's yummy and it melts nicely in your mouth.

electric_eye Jul 14, 2006 07:15 PM

I don't eat much chocolate, but milk chocolate for me too. Dark is probably too rich for me, not that I mind it too much though.

Radical Jul 15, 2006 12:42 AM

Dark chocolate is my runaway favorite, it seems to be more complex than milk chocolate. Sometimes, though, I just feel like eating milk chocolate. So my preferences change occasionally. My favorite milk chocolate is probably Dove, but I haven't really had many different varieties of milk chocolate yet. My favorite dark chocolate is Valrhona 71%.

You're thinking of white chocolate. Milk chocolate is chocolate which has a lower percentage of cacao than dark chocolate. The dark chocolate that I've seen ranges from 60 to 99% cacao, whereas the milk chocolate I've seen ranges from 40 to 50% cacao.

Infernal Monkey Jul 15, 2006 05:05 AM

You guys are crazy, COOKING chocolate is the only way to go. It's like eating a train wreck that has the flu. So good!

http://www.cadbury.com.au/sites/cadb...c%20250g_1.jpg

Oh but yeah, I prefer normal dark chocolate to milk chocolate. It doesn't BURN as much when you eat deadly amounts.

Krelian Jul 15, 2006 09:49 AM

Despite not actually being chocolate, I love love LOVE white chocolate.

I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate, though.

Mucknuggle Jul 15, 2006 12:03 PM

Cooking chocolate? Lol. My friend actually tried eating some the other day, thinking that it would be good. It quickly ran to the trash and spat it out. Then he grabbed some water and thoroughly washed the remaining residue out of his mouth.

ShadowScythe Jul 17, 2006 12:11 PM

dark chocolate is exotic. milk chocolate is for kids. i like dark chocolate :edgarrock:

Piano Guy Jul 17, 2006 12:47 PM

I definitely like milk chocolate! I like dark chocolate only when accompanied by something sweet, like cherries, strawberries, etc. Otherwise, it's all milk chocolate for me!

Trench Jul 17, 2006 02:56 PM

I think it just depends on if you eat chocolate for something sweet or if you eat chocolate to actually enjoy the flavor of chocolate. I eat chocolate to eat something sweet so I like milk chocolate.

My friend tells me "true chocolate lovers like dark." I tell her they like both.

janus zeal Jul 17, 2006 05:12 PM

I like dark chocolate. but milk chocolate is better in a candy bar. ^_^

Of course. If there's an implicit "only" between the words "lovers" and "like", then that sentiment is absolutely full of it.

Cal Jul 17, 2006 06:25 PM

I only like dark. Lindt 70 and Lindt 85 (per cent cocoa, that is) are my main jollies.

Soluzar Jul 17, 2006 06:54 PM

Those of you who are Dark Chocolate lovers, have you ever tried Green and Black's Organic Chocolate, especially "Maya Gold", which is lightly flavoured with a hint of orange and spices? Damn, that stuff is more addictive than crack.

Yes, that stuff is sooooo good. <3

ComradeTande Jul 19, 2006 08:35 PM

milk chocolate! unless it's really high quality dark chocolate (i've always seemed to get the crappy hershey's stuff D:) filled with some kind of caramel. I can't eat dark chocolate just plain! It doesn't seem right...

chocolate oranges too. that's the only dark chocolate stuff i'd eat plain. although i'd perfer the milk chocolate oranges

Angel Aug 8, 2006 10:17 AM

Dark chocolate's too bitter for my taste. I prefere milk chocolate... Esp. in candybars... the sweeter the better :-)

Retriever II Aug 8, 2006 05:23 PM

I can tolerate dark chocolate a little better than I used to, but I still prefer milk chocolate. Maybe I'll aquire a better taste for it over time. Lately though I've also noticed I'm more picky about the quality of the chocolate I eat - milk or dark. I used to eat Palmer chocolate around Easter and not think anything of it, but this past year I noticed it was grainy and otherwise not very good.

Kotone Aug 8, 2006 05:44 PM

I prefer dark chocolate more, because I find milk chocolate a tad too sweet. However, I do like milk chocolate on occasion, as long as I don't eat too much of it. :D

Void Aug 16, 2006 12:31 AM

Milk chocolate is so typical. It's like all of the cheap and crappy candy out there, it's all the same when it's milk chocolate.

Dark chocolate always has that rich and elegant taste to it. I love it.

Dan1500 Aug 22, 2006 06:26 PM

I have never been a fan of dark chocolate, I prefer other sweet things to chocolate in general but milk choc does it for me more. I like dark chocolate when it is combined with mint, then it beats milk easily. The bitterness of the dark chocolate and the strong flavour of the mint kinda balances. :D

JackTheRipper Aug 27, 2006 09:15 PM

Dark chocolate is totally gross. Milk chocolate is pretty good. white chocolate is where it's at.

Infernal Monkey Aug 27, 2006 09:51 PM

Where what's at? The grossness? I agree, white chocolate is where the gross hangs out!

Celes Chere Aug 29, 2006 06:34 PM

Mmmm.. dark chocolate is WONDERFUL. I love Special Dark by Hershey. :3

I mean, milk chocolate is good too, but I adore dark. Something about it makes me happy. XD

I like orange chocolate too.. you know, the chocolate that comes in the shape of an orange that you break and eat individual pieces?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_orange

Now I want one. :(

EDIT: YES I CAN POST LINKS NOW :D :D :D

Lazyguy Aug 29, 2006 08:58 PM

i prefer milk chocolate to dark. The dark chocolate is to rich and i just cant eat that much of it but milk chocolate goes down smooth and taste good.
