another n00b going sony
Ok I have decided that I need to buy a PS2, I have checked my local buy/trade ad service and have left a message to two people. I should get a call sometime this week, so in the mean time I have to figure out what games to get. I see that RABicle has made a thread like this in the past but the problem is, I love RPG's which he was against. So I would like to know, what are some must have games I should buy for both PS1 and 2?
I like RPG's, Sidescrolling shooters like Metal Slug, and Gradius, 1st person shooters, and Adventure type games so far I am thinking of getting: Burnout: Revenge (either for the PS2 or Xbox not sure which) Guitar Hero Gradius V Gradius III Final Fantasy (not sure what final fantasy as I havn't played any after 6) Shadow of the Colossus Soul Caliber 3 (maybe 2 as well) Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence / Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (differance?) I already have Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube Playstation games are very difficult to find here, but if it truley kicks ass I will consider Ebay EDIT: ok updated list Burnout: Revenge (either for the PS2 or Xbox not sure which) Guitar Hero Gradius III Koudelka Final Fantasy Tactics Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy X the rest of the Final Fantasy series after purchasing the above Soul Caliber 3 Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Valkyrie Profile Shadow Hearts Shadow Hearts: Covenant Suikoden I, II, III, V ICO Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4 + 5 Devil May Cry 1 Contra: Shattered Soldier Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Silent Hill series Star Ocean: Second Story Dynasty Warriors Castlevania: Lament of Innocence Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Xenosaga Chrono Cross |
I'm assuming that your budget is "infinity", since a few of these I will list are pricey.
Koudelka {PS1}, Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Well actually you might not like them, since they are darker in tone, and you have such fluff in your avatar and sig, but I don't care. Final Fantasy Tactics, VIII, VII {in that order}. Suikoden, Suikoden II, Suikoden III, Suikoden V. First two are PS1. Valkyrie Profile {PS1}. This is the best game to be released on the PS1. Anyone who argues this point has an opinion that is different from mine, but that's ok. That's just a quicklist that includes traditional RPG style, darker RPG style, quirky RPG style, and PURE, UNADULTERATE AWESOME RPG style {Valkyrie Profile}. Basically if you grab two or three of those, you will get some role playing enjoyment out of your PS2. |
Get a magic tool and swap disk.
|
Fuck that, modchip the thing. You're in canada.

ICO is another game you need to get. But I won't recommend the american version since it's missing pieces of coolness (and I'm not just talking about the art cards.) If you like side scrolling shooters like Metal Slug, obviously get Metal Slug 3 since it's the best in the series. I hear that there's a pack which has Metal Slug 4 and 5 on one disc, so you might want to get that as well. Metal Slug 1 and X are on the original PS1, but I doubt you'll obtain those legally. I can't comment on first person shooters, because they're, well, gross. What I can comment on, though, is Final Fantasy X. It's like a bare requirement when you purchase a PS2, to play FFX. Though it isn't the greatest game in the world, I still enjoyed it and it's different from the rest. Much like Kingdom Hearts, which I found very entertaining and kept me playing for hours. It's dirt cheap and you're missing out by not picking these up. The difference between Subsistence and the original MGS3 is that the subsistence version is like a "remixed" version, spanning over something like 5 discs. |
know of a reliable site to buy the magic tool and swap disk or mod chip and what modchip is the best/ easiest to install?
I just checked out some of the games you posted russ, I must say Valkyrie Profile looks hella sweet! I also checked out Shadow Hearts: Covenant, I like the timed hit meter thing looks like an awsome game. I saw a video clip of Suikoden V and it also looks worth the purchase. I may have to buy everything you posted so far. |
I got mine at http://www.swapnslide.com/.
The magic tool and swap magic combo is the way to go if you're getting a slimeline. |
I belive it is the original fat PS2 as it doesn't say otherwise, so mod chip or magic card?
|
fuck modchips, softmods are the way to go, less mess and no hardware alteration (unless u decide to do a flippy) thats just my 2 cents, if you are getting a slimline DEF dont get a chip, i hear those are a bitch to install. in any case there are millions of places online that u can download the magic swap app and i made my own slidecard off of online plans. dont spend money on things if you dont have to :P
but def get god of war, and black. great games both of them, that is if you like senseless violence and explosions. |
You like Metal Slug and the run n' gun shooter genre? Try picking up Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PS2. I don't think you'll be disappointed (although it is a pretty difficult game). Also, it's worth noting that the game is a CD.
|
If you want to get Valkyrie Profile it's gonna cost you a fortune, unless you actually find it in a used game shop. Ebay or half.com will cost over $100 and that's not even factory sealed.
You can get alot of the Final Fantasies that have been released on PS1 or PS2 for pretty cheap on Buy.com or Amazon.com new. Having played Soul Calibur 2 and 3. I'd say getting 2 would be a waste if you're getting 3. The new Mortal Kombat game they're working on looks pretty awesome but only time will tell. There are alot of older game Collections you could get that are available on PS2 like Midway Arcade Treasures and Capcom Classics Collection if you like older games. Personal reccomendations though, if you like RPGs. Star Ocean: The Second Story Valkyrie Profile if you can afford it Tales of Destiny Disgaea That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. |
ok got some good recomendations, not one game mentioned so far looked bad I have not recieved call from the people I want to do buisiness with yet, I was hoping I would be able to get it today...
I can get a PS2, 2 controlers and X amount of games (no titles nor amount of games are mentioned) for $75 canadian or I can get a PS2, 1 controler, and 1 undefined game for $110 dollars canadian I will obviously try for the first one |

Also, get MGS2, duh. |

Three discs. I guess we're both wrong. |
The third disc is only available with "Limited Edition" Subsistence.
|
whats on the third disk?
|
The game's cutscenes merged together into one movie.

I'm glad you have SOTC on there, and someone mentioned ICO. Ico is a short game, but a beautiful game. You won't find any rocket launchers or rail guns in this movie, only a 2 by 4 stick ( and some other melee weapons later on), but its a game that really tests you on thinking and as well as exploration. Q can go all over this, so I'll leave this schtick to him (or Lix). You can probably get SOTC for about $40ish CDN to $50, depending on the store, duh. ICO is more harder to find and you'll probably have to go to EB games or something. -VALKRIE PROFILE- Valkyrie Profile, as Russ has mentioned, is ZOMG awesome on all levels, and it was worth my $85 USD then after shipping and customs. Damn expensive to find now, but hey, September 9, 2006 is when VP: Silmeria comes out, which takes place before VP. So it'll be much easier to get your hands on that one. Don't miss out on VP though, GRAB it the moment you ever lay your eyes on one, even if they're selling the discs only with no instructions or jewel case, seriously. Plus it does give some simple instruction in the beginning of the game, but there's always gamefaqs. What makes it unique is the battle system. Hot damn, never have I actually WANTED to get into "random" battles (you can see the enemies on screen before fighting them, like Chronotrigger/cross, if you've played that game). I think it's a pretty fast paced game in terms of battle when you're probably at about chapter 4 plus. -FINAL FANTASY SOMETHINGARATHER- With the whole Final Fantasy thing, well...there's basically VII to X-2. It's a wide range, and I've seen another FF thread kicking around of which they should start on, here it is. Also FFXII comes out this October, but perhaps you might want to try the other FFs since this one is departuring from the regular random battles, and from what I've read (and talked to GFF members with the Jap copy), it's pretty bloody hard with the souped up bosses and all, not your walk in the park FF title. -MERCENARIES- I'm not much of an action gamer, but I did get Mercenaries, basically it's a GTA style game but more military tuned. Selling for about $25 CDN now. -GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS- Speaking GTA style, pick up Grand Theft Auto San Andreas while you're at it. A friggin massive game that even I'm still trying to go through. I'm up to the Woozie missions in Chinatown. This is the best action/holycrazycrap game to be released on the PS2. Anyone who argues this point has an opinion that is different from mine, but that's ok. Sup Russ Selling for about $25 for the special edition (sans hot coffee) at your local Walmart (you do live nearby a walmart, now don't you?) You said something about adventure, and GTA:SA is packed of it. It's not exactly the Indiana Jones type of adventure, so I hope you know what I'm talking about if you've never played a GTA type game before. Hopefully you have. Another note, if you can wait for another 11 days, the GST will drop one whole percent :tpg:. It might not sound like much, but living in the land of 14% tax is better than %15, if I remember correctly about BC's PST/GST. LOL'ing with Alberta's 6% GST come July 1st. So after this time, shop like crazy. |
thanks spatula your post really helps expecially since I have played a GTA, and I do indeed live near a Walmart. Is Chrono Cross for PS any good? I was a huge fan of Chrono Trigger
|
The 3rd "Existence" disc for the Subsistence LE has a 3 hour "movie" made from the cutscenes in MGS3. It's not very good, the story is delivered much more effectively in the Snake Eater game. The LE is more expensive and much harder to find. Just buy the 2 disc Subsistence. It's only $30 and you get: the original Snake Eater game with a new 3D rotatable camera and new camo's, Demo theater (view all the cutscenes), the original 2 Metal Gear games (for the MSX/Nintendo. MG2 was never officially released before in the U.S. before this), a couple more "Snake vs. Ape" missions (Ape Escape with Snake), Duel mode (fight all the bosses), and the brand new online mode. Online mode is pretty fun and justifies the cost by itself.
Make sure to get the newer slim PS2 which comes with the network adaptor built in. Some note worthy non-RPG's: -SOCOM 3. Online mode is the best out of all the SOCOMs. If you like shooters at all get this. -God of War. Action/Adventure/Platformer. Great game. Get it now! -Ace Combat series. If you've never played Ace Combat before you need to try it out. Start with AC04 (you can find it for $10!). If that floats your boat, immediately get AC5 and Zero. Get AC2 and 3 for PS1 if you can find them. -Devil May Cry 3. Action. Pure awesome action. -Silent Hill games. Survival Horror. Much scarier and much better story than Resident Evil. SH1 and SH2 are a must. Good luck even finding SH3 or 4. |
Jesus, I have no idea why it's taken me this long to actually buy a sony gaming consol. At least now that I'm getting one I already have hundreds of sweet games I've never played. I have never even played a PS game except for Syphon Filter (gay) and Tiny Tank (funnish) oh and Ape Excape (bloody fun)
|
Just obviously don't expect a PS1 to have that "spizzaz" of the PS2 games in terms of graphics and sound, duh. PS1 was great for RPGS, since they were, ya know, more original than most of the RPGs now.
|
hmm just wondering can you still buy non slimline PS2s in regular non second hand stores like walmart? The one I'm buying was recently bought and rarly used. Also is Jak 2 fun? Thats the game it comes with
|
You can't buy fat PS2s anymore brand new.
|
Do you have an EB games nearby? I've got like 8 in my city alone :tpg:, so getting sold out of hot titles isn't common, but for consoles it is.
*Phones up December 27th, 2005.* "HELLO DO YOU HAVE THE NEW XBOX!?!?! I'll give you lots and lots of money!" "No, you should have preordered, now go away". |
Well shit george, if you haven't played PS1 games and are getting a PS2, you should start with MGS1 instead of 3 =/
A far more enjoyable game I might add. People have pretty much recommended most of the playworthy titles and I'd hate to second recommendations. From PS1 titles, you should look into Grandia (the first one, not 2) and possibly Vagrant Story if you ever get a craving for action-RPGs. The Metal Slug games on PS1 are pretty terrible, and I think it's a crime they haven't released arcade perfect PS2 ports of the first two titles :( Metal Slug 3 is definitely the one to go with, it's considered the best in the series by many and for good reasons (even though I personally liked the first game cause there were no aliens). Both Katamari Damacy titles are extremely funny and relatively inexpensive cause of their cheaper retail price (though I'm not sure if they've become collector's items over there). The music is excellent too. Genji is wonderful if you liked games like Onimusha. It's a similar third person hack n slash, with RPG elements and an emphasis on beautiful visuals and flash. If you dig electronica, Rez and Frequency are the best music games money can buy. Though if I understood correctly, Rez has become somewhat rare, but if you run into it, it's a brilliant Panzer Dragoon style shooter with a brilliant soundtrack and a brilliantly designed sound system that alters and evolves depending on how you play the levels. EDIT: And why the heck if FFVIII on the list but not FFVII? =/ Russ recommended both =o |
If you like platformers and action games get the Ratchet and Clank titles. Even if you don't, buy them anyway, feed the evil sony machine. Make sure to play them in order or you won't get full enjoyment out of them. And listen to the soundtracks. The Jak games aren't as good and they focus alot less on action than the Ratchet titles, but the two franchises are always getting compared and I hear everyone else likes the Jak series (I personally don't care for it all that much).
Devil May Cry is a good way to kill a weekend, just don't get Devil May Cry 2. Since you like Ape Escape I would definitely recommend Ape Escape 3, it improves on the formula from the first game without all the crap from Ape Escape 2 (do not get Ape Escape 2, it sucks). I always recommend R-Type Final, and it's less than 20 bucks so you might as well give it a shot. Quote:

As for your question about would you like Chrono Cross since you liked Chrono Trigger. That's hard to answer, the combat really isn't all that similar. Also alot of Chono Trigger fans consider what they did to the CT characters in it a bastardization.
Seriously though if you can find a copy of Star Ocean: Second Story for a decent price get it. The combat has abit of an action twist to it and it's a nice change of pace from the usual stuff you do in Final Fantasy. Plus there are lots of different endings depending one what characters you manage to pair up together. You can pair up any 2 characters you want as long as they can be in the party together (Either romantically or friendship, depends on the characters in question). It's up there with Valkyrie Profile in my personal favorites. If you want to play an action game where you take on swarm after swarm of troops, you might want to check out the Dynasty Warriors games. Obviously just skip to the most recent ones if you do. There are alot of people that complain that the series doesn't move forward enough with each release, but then there are people like me and my friends who can't get enough of it. |

As for games... I definitely say try out the Onimusha series, they're set in more of the action horror genre. Great series if you like samurai games and hack n' slashers. Heh, and like Qwarky said get Genji if you end up liking Onimusha. Zone of the Enders is another great series, fast paced robot action. ZOE2 I highly suggest, the gameplay is just outstanding, so much goes on the screen at once. For the Metal Gear Solid series, definitely start with one as Qwarky mentioned already. If you're looking to get MGS2, look out for MGS2 Substance (it's like the director's cut), it's got more play value than Sons of Liberty. Castlevania series is pretty fun too, another action series with some RPG elements to it (well the PS2 games anyway). Really minimal things though. There's two games for the PS2, "Lament of Innocence" and "Curse of Darkness." I'd say get LoI first, as that's most likely the cheaper one. Also, if you end up liking Devil May Cry, you might wanna try Chaos Legion. The gameplay is pretty fun, you summon and command a legion of warriors to do/aid your fighting. I think the real highlight in this game is it's kick ass soundtrack by Hideyuki Fukasawa. For RPGs, try out the Xenosaga series, it's got a pretty interesting storyline with a pretty fun battle system. Episode III should be coming out sometime before the end of the year I believe. The first 2 episodes should be dirt cheap now, last time I saw Xeno2 at EB it was going for $20-30. RPG on PS1... definitely pick up Chrono Cross, awesome game. Heh, while you're at it, you may as well pick up Chrono Trigger. |
I'd recommend some PS1 games if you're going that route.
Final Fantasy Tactics - The best of the series. Chrono Cross - An excellent game, far different than Chrono Trigger, but far better, and pretty much the best music in a game to date. Street Fighter Alpha 3 - For classic beat-em-up action Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - THE Castlevania game to get. It destroys all others. Valkyerie Profile - I don't think it's the best, as russ believes, but it is a damn fine game, and if you're lucky enough to find one, go for it. Suikoden 1 - Great game, and fun too. For PS2 games Disgaea - a strategy RPG with great humour. Armored Core 2 and up - if you like fast paced action shooters, this series is great, with tons of customizability. Devil May Cry 1 and 3 - Great games, fast paced action and superb from start to finish. God of War - the best action game made yet. X-Men Legends 1 and 2 - Diablo-style RPG with the X-Men and guests! Dragon Warrior 8 - the best classic console style RPG made yet. Soul Calibur 3 - You can make your own character to fight with, plus it has nearly every character in all of the games. (I'm still bitter that they created Olcadon instead of bringing back Edgemaster though...) Guitar Hero - If you've ever dreamed of playing a guitar, but are too lazy to learn, or if you just want to listen to some classic rock while looking cool doing it, I cannot recommend this game enough. If you are neither then I would think you are kinda "funny", and not funny "ha ha"... ;) and by the way, stay away from Final Fantasy X unless you want to be turned off from Square forever. That should do you for now. |
I am a huge Final Fantasy Fan, so every Final Fantasy before Final Fantasy X warrants a purchase from me, They're all damn fun, but I dunno about Final Fantasy X, never owned a PS2. But yes, Final Fantasy I - IX are all good, assuming you're not completely anal about graphics. And for the record: Final Fantasy I has got to be one of the HARDEST RPGs I've ever played.....at least after beating everything else.
But other PS1 games, Legend of Mana is a nice game you could go for, it's kinda like Seiken Densetsu 3 if you've played that. If you haven't, well, I dunno, it's like a third person hack-n-slash with RPG elements. That's about it for new stuff. So all in all.... Final Fantasy Origins (I and II) Final Fantasy Chronicles (IV and Chrono Trigger) Final Fanatsy Anthology (V and VI) Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy Tactics Legend of Mana Be warned, the load times on IV, V, and VI are horrendous. If you have an SNES, you'd be better served with the SNES original. (except V which was never released Stateside) |

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil is a fun platformer that I always have to whore out to people buying PS2s. Even my macho friends who can't stand the colorful, bright games ended up liking it. I hadn't heard of Klonoa before that and wasn't too interested when my mom brought it home but once I started playing, I couldn't stop. The 2d-ish level designs are neat, I like the way the camera follows you. I like the gameplay too, it's...fluid. Somewhat challenging to collect all the gems in the game but fun to try...I found it easier than trying to get all the gems in Mischief Makers, anyway. Great soundtrack, too.

Does Tool E let you close the PSTwo? Tool C apparantly doesn't, and I don't want to open the slimline without having to. |

As for FFVII, well it was engaging enough for me during Midgar already, but yes, it does get better once you get out into the world. Although I'm not quite sure how it plays on the PC, I've generally tried to stay away from Square's PC ports as they've not been that great. |
No one said Psychonauts. Shame.
Unless you already have an alternative version, of which you will share the love of this game. |
Bought my PS2 finally, I have bought Devil May Cry 3, and God of War with it. The ass-hat I was supposed to buy it from never called back so I just went to the store and bought it new. I ended up paying about $50 than I would have, no big loss.
I will leave this open in case there are other must have games that someone may want to recomend Double Post: Quote:

I highly recommend Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, if you can find it that is. Not only is it one of the hardest RPGs ever, it's pretty damn creative and fun to play. Just watch out for that matador... One of the best RPGs on PS2. Actually, it is the best. Followed closely in second by Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. Grab those too if you can find them. *end ATLUS plug*
