Namco announces three more "Tales of" games [update: clear large scans!!!!]

PS2 - Tales of Destiny (complete remake with full voice acting)
PSP - Tales of Phantasia (PS1 port with full voice acting)
PSP - Tales of the World (based on Narikiri Dungeon)

I'm definitely getting all three, especially Destiny, it has one of the best stories next to Phantasia.

Forsety Jun 19, 2006 10:41 AM

Anything more legible than a thumbnail sized scan that nobody on earth could make out? If this is true, that's pretty awesome though. ToD was always my favorite game of the series overall; a remake (if done right) could easily make it worth replaying to me. I just can't stand the slow paced battle system of the original anymore or I'd replay that. :/

Kanji Jun 19, 2006 10:58 AM

D:

Could this be related to that surprise that was supposed to be announced tomorrow on the Tales website?

Cool information, though. I hope they keep Phantasia's original graphics this time; I wasn't a fan of the Gameboy Advance version's graphics (they weren't bad, but I much prefer the rustic look of the Super Famicom version). Never got a chance to play Destiny either, so this will be a good opportunity to grab it. :)

rpgcrazied Jun 19, 2006 11:20 AM

another version of ToP? I do think they are gettin a little carried away with that version.

I'm all for a ToD remake though, lets just hope it gets localized here

Peter Jun 19, 2006 11:48 AM

Refresh my memory, have we actually seen Tales of Destiny in some form released in the US, or was it a Jap only game?

If we haven't seen it yet, I'm interested in it, not so much in the other ones since I don't have a PSP, and because I have already played ToP more than enough.

Tales of Destiny was released on the PSX in the US (and I believe Europe) as *drumroll* Tales of Destiny. Yeah. They also released & renamed Tales of Eternia to "Tales of Destiny 2" to cash in on the obvious popularity (haha, really; what were they thinking?) of ToD overseas.

Yeah, that last part was a joke incase you didn't catch it.

Kaleb.G Jun 19, 2006 12:48 PM

Why the hell are they remaking ToD for PS2? Why don't they just hold out for PS3 or put it on the 360?

Miles Jun 19, 2006 01:03 PM

Because that would increase the chances of a stateside release. xD

Cetra Jun 19, 2006 01:15 PM

That, and I'm sure they just plan on rehashing one of the Tales engines they already have on the PS2.

I'm indifferent though. If these end up being released outside of Japan for once, I don't care which remake they are on, it's all new to me.

Inhert Jun 19, 2006 01:49 PM

well that's really a good news to me, because tales of destiny and tales of Eternia was my favorite Tales of up to date, and we already have a port of tales of eternia and now weMll have a fully remake! i'm very exited with that! and having played tales of phantasia only on a snes emulator, I'm pretty happy to have a remake ^^ I just hope that they will keep the character designer Mutsumi Inomata for those remake ^^

and sure there will be 2 remake (well one port and one remake) on the psp, but after a DS title a new original psp title was expected, I think going portable now is god, be cause we are in the transition of the next-gen, and when all next-gen console will be install, it will be ok to get a new ps3, 360 or maybe Wii Tales of. I just hope that they will always keep they game in 2D or cell-shaded like tales of symphonia...

and I like the "new" way they are naming they game. Tales of the Abyss, Tales of the tempest, Tales of the World... ^^

and for god sake, make a f****** Tales of Rebirth port! I want this one so bad ; ; (the "real" Tales of Destiny 2 on ps2 interest me a little too ^^)

and I like how some people complain with a new ToP port/remake when we clearly have the same thing with all the FFI to FFVI and they don't complain much about those >.>

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 19, 2006 01:55 PM

Yeah, it's fucking ridiculous to try to decipher anything in that scan. Still, by zooming the crap out of it, you can see Stahn in the top-right corner and a blue "Tales of Destiny" logo near the top left.

The screens are complete blurs, but the colors remind me of Tales of Rebirth. As retarded as that sounds.

yangxu Jun 19, 2006 04:27 PM

Well, the scan comes from Dengeki PS2 or something like that, whoever took a picture of that deserves to die, but that said, it's good to know the information regarding the new Tales games before Namco's official website makes an announcement.

Double Post:
I'm glad it's 2D, and I'm super happy about its 2D battle system... 2D >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3D anyday.

Inhert Jun 19, 2006 10:00 PM

wow after checker those the remake for tales of destiny look so good!!! look at those sprite! it's awesome! The remake for Tales of phantasia lok quite good too, more like a tales of eternia.

and i see that this new tales of the World will be in 3D and could it be a cross-over? because i'm pretty sure i,m seeing Rayne from tales of Symphonia and Arche from Tales of phantasia in the battle screen...

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 19, 2006 10:38 PM

I'm going to have to assume you've never heard of the Tales of the World series if you're only suspecting that it's a crossover title.

Vkamicht Jun 19, 2006 11:51 PM

The towns & out-of-battle sprites look in the exact style of Rebirth so we're seeing some game engine & artist rehashing here.

I'm probably one of the few who hope the battles will be more similar to ToD2 than ToR... with a few exceptions. I just thought they were faster and more fun.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 19, 2006 11:56 PM

It appears to be only one line of combat, but I don't see any SP gauge. Maybe they're going back to the old old battle system.

That'd be repetitive as hell, though.

There's still numbers above each character's face, we aren't sure what that is yet.

Either way, I still enjoyed Legendia which had very simple combat compared to the other games. As long as it's not like the original it'll be fine.

yangxu Jun 20, 2006 12:33 AM

I actually prefer the old classic LBS more than the others, ToD2's battle system is innovative, but it's too annoying in the sense that not only does good spells come from extensions, but it also limits your MP, so healing outside battle is a pain the butt even with the TP reduction ring equipped...

Since this is a remake, I'm certain the battle will be at least as fast as ToD2.

Forsety Jun 20, 2006 01:04 AM

It looks nice, even if it does look like it is rehashing the Rebirth engine. Rebirth looked good, so if they have to rehash at least they are rehashing that. I do agree that the battle screen doesn't look like it's adding anything new but I'll wait for some videos to make a real opinion on it. Or at least more than a single screenshot.

Anything is better than the engine the game originally used, though. Heh.

oh yeah now that you mantion it, I heard about it but really doesn't know anything about the series...

and for me the best tales of combat system was in tales of eternia, the tales of Symphonia was kind of fun too but I hate what they have done to summon...

I never played tales of destiny 2 since it never came out here... I heard that the Rebirth one was quite good too ( I saw some video someday of some special attack and god they look cool)

anyway as long as it's not like the tales of legendia one, I'll be happy. I so hate what they have done to the system, now you only need to bash the x button to finish the battle in like 30sec >.> what's the fun when a battle doesn,t give you any challenge and doesn't even last a full min >.< I don't know even if eternia is almost the same as Legendia there something more fun to it (like the fact that battle seem to last longer and yu have time to really enjoy them)

Peter Jun 20, 2006 04:56 AM

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who didn't like the Legendia system that much. It was just a bit boring to me, and rahter easy (even on hard); Aside from that, I was rather disappointed in the small portion of the game that I played, mainly because I really didn't like the graphics, which is a shame because the designs looked pretty cool.

I complain about every remake, unless it's one that improves on the original (Wild Arms Alter Code F, Final Fantasy III).

Krelian Jun 20, 2006 05:06 AM

Tales of Phantasia? Fuck yeah, best game on the SNES. Now all I have to do is pray that it gets localised. Same goes for Tales of The World. I don't want to see the west get screwed over again.

ComCrimson Jun 20, 2006 06:59 AM

Awesome. About time there were some more RPG's on the PSP. I've only got Tales of Eternia. These all look absolutely fab. Essential purchase me thinks! The graphics looks gorgeous on all three. Can't wait!

VitaPup Jun 20, 2006 07:15 AM

This is great news! ToD was one of my favorite PS1 RPGs and I think the screenshots provided look very nice. I never attempted to do that secret dungeon at the end though. Did anybody ever get the secret character?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 20, 2006 10:30 AM

What, you mean Lillith? I've hacked her in before. She seemed abusable, as I recall. Oh, one new screen:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y27...les_top_07.gif

Also, as I'm sure some of you have heard, there's also going to be a port of the real Tales of Destiny 2 to the PSP. Due sometime in 2007 for Japan.

yangxu Jun 20, 2006 10:57 AM

There is also a Tales of Symphonia anime coming in 2007.

rpgcrazied Jun 20, 2006 11:04 AM

ToD2j for the psp? AHhhhhh, If it somehow makes it over with the TOD remake ill be shocked.

But, i dont want to buy a psp for one game.. How come they just couldnt release it for the PS2? *shakes fist at namco*

Cetra Jun 20, 2006 11:33 AM

Wow, the Tales of Destiny remake has some quality sprite artwork. I really hope at least that one makes it stateside after seeing some of those screenshots.

And are the anime scenes something new for ToP, or were they added as part of the PS1 version?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 20, 2006 11:51 AM

The Playstation pseudo-remake had cutscenes added to it, yes.

yangxu Jun 20, 2006 12:39 PM

Hmmm... Lion now uses two swords, I guess Namco wanna be coherent so people won't question them about Judas' nitouryu in ToD2.

Acacia Jun 20, 2006 02:57 PM

='D

This is such great news. I really liked Tales of Phantasia, but I never got the chance to play the other Tales games. Now I can though! Thanks for the news~~!

Tequila Jun 20, 2006 04:43 PM

I am so going to get the remake. Heck~ That's going to rock. X3 Wonder what Sakuraba and Tamura will be doing with the old, over-pitched and very repetive OST. Just arrange or rewrite anew completely?

Mucknuggle Jun 20, 2006 05:06 PM

Will the Tales games never end? There have to be more Tales of games than FF now right?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jun 20, 2006 05:30 PM

No, unless you're counting the Tales' side games and not Final Fantasy's.

Inhert Jun 20, 2006 07:29 PM

yeah no, not as much as final fantasy, but yeah there's a lot

but for me the tales of series is the only thing good coming out of namco...(xenosaga ep1 can be an exception, I'll see about epIII >.>)

Forsety Jun 21, 2006 04:07 AM

Heeeeyyyy, Soul Calibur for the dreamcast was pretty awesome as far as fighting games go. Never did get into Soul Edge, or SC2 or 3, though.

yangxu Jun 21, 2006 12:45 PM

A new video from Namco's press conference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDa3WseG0ow

Basically the new E-LBS is gonna be an aerial combo blast based system, it's gonna be a whole new experience for combating enemies up in the sky... the "CC" circles in the status bar show the number of aerial combos each of your characters performs... and since you can link so many different skills together, I doubt the SP system will make a return here.

Inhert Jun 21, 2006 03:03 PM

wow! just saw the video and god those battle seem so fun!! that was pretty cool!

the first remake to be release will be Tales of Phantasy on PSP for september 7 in Japan and the other's will follow this winter ^^

I hope they will get to North America!

Syndrome Jul 9, 2006 05:48 PM

Are they serious?
The Tales- franchise is almost getting worse than the Fifa/NHL/Madden franchise!

And many more would say Tales of Abyss is the best Tales game to date.

Inhert Jul 22, 2006 03:46 PM

O-M-G !!!! this look so fun!!! They must release this remake here! I so want it XD

really this look way better then the original , because I tried to play not so long ago and I gave up XD after playing Tales of Eternia and Tales of Symphonia it's really hard to return to the basis, you can't even do normal attack combo XD and the graphic even if they are nice, they look exactly like Tales of Phantasia on Snes >.< I didn't remember it that way XD still a really good game. I'll really enjoy this remake XD

KazeJiyuu Jul 23, 2006 07:42 PM

I can't wait for this remake! Also I wonder if they'll make some extras and maybe use the save from ToD2 to get some extra itens.

Freelance Jul 23, 2006 08:07 PM

Oh damn, I just watched some videos of that ToD remake and it looks sweet. Wish it came out here. I never played the original game. I loved ToS, and I've looking forward to the OAV!

yangxu Jul 23, 2006 08:09 PM

This game will own all the other RPGs that come out in the same month, it's just... too good to describe with words. Those crazy combos you can do is far beyond my expectation, and the detailed 2D backgrounds that can be drawn in win my heart instantly. With full voice acting and the original storyline, this game will sure land a bomb before the end of the PS2 era...

SouthJag Mar 13, 2007 10:20 PM

Tales of the World confirmed for US release in late summer for the PSP.

Miles Mar 14, 2007 12:06 AM

...

Why the hell did they pick this one? I think ToD2 would have been a much better choice if they wanted to do a PSP game, honestly. Come on Namco! We're DYING for that game to be localized and released here!

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 14, 2007 02:53 AM

The game looks and plays like shit. Definitely should've gone with Destiny 2.

Still, I suppose if you like fan service, you'll get a kick out of the game. Plus it'll introduce several characters not seen in any US Tales game (Harold, Eugene and Annie, to be exact).

Inhert Mar 14, 2007 11:54 AM

damn I wanted tales of destiny remake ; ; or at least the port of tales of destiny 2 :\
