Do you wear eyeglasses?

Just wondering guys, I'm sure you spend a lot of time in front of your monitor. I suppose some of you must be wearing eyeglasses as well since we abuse our eyes, or perhaps you like me, not wearing eyeglasses though have spend a lot of time in front of pc?

I also wondering why I havent worn any eyeglasses since childhood, though I spend most of my time in front of monitor. My friend said it's actually genetic inheritance. My grandpa, my grandma, my mom, and my father actually wear eyeglasses, strangely only me and my sis are the only ones who dont wear them. Well It's not like I want to wear one.

Kairyu Jun 17, 2006 06:45 AM

I wear eyeglasses. And no, its not those huge bifocals.
Though, I don't think its because I look at a monitor alot. Its because I'm slightly near-sighted (20/20 vision in my left eye and 20/40 in my right eye.) In a classroom setting I don't really need them, I can see just fine across a whole room/auditorium. Its main use is mostly for driving, seeing a speed limit sign 75 feet away is a little challenging >.>

Radez Jun 17, 2006 07:10 AM

Heh, I have bifocals. People still ask me "why are your glasses so scratched?"

I've had eyeglasses since I was four, so it's got nothing to do with the computer (although the computer probably doesn't help). I was an extremely premature baby, and was given pure oxygen at birth, which apparently messed up my eyes. I'm not complaining, though, because it could have just made me blind instead. ^^;

My right eye is also much, much worse than my left eye. I forget the exact figures, but it gets pretty ridiculous in eye tests when I can read fairly well with one eye and can't see shit with the other.

the quiet fox Jun 17, 2006 07:12 AM

Shit, the above post was me again. I'm really sorry; it won't happen a third time.

Alice Jun 17, 2006 07:19 AM

I've worn glasses since first grade. I was extremely nearsighted and my eyesight got worse and worse every year until it finally reached the point where I was legally blind. Eight years ago I had laser surgery on my eyes because I was going to have to wear contacts and glasses, since no one made contacts that were strong enough for me.

I had 20/20 vision until a couple of years ago (boy was that strage thing to get used to) when my vision started to slip a little. My eyes aren't bad now...I think they're 20/40 or so, and I can elect to not wear my glasses if I'm hiking or swimming or going somewhere where I have to dress up.

Dekoa Jun 17, 2006 09:09 AM

I don't know how bad my eyes are but I do know that I wear glasses all the time. I'm nearsighted and I can survive without my glasses; however, I can't read the monitor in front of me if I take off my glasses and I like to see clearly when I can so I keep them on all the time. It's not so bad really. I just hope that I don't have to go to the laser surgery.

Why not? I don't wear glasses, but I don't have perfect eyesight either, and if I could have laser surgery (for free) to correct that, I would do it.

Wojo Jun 17, 2006 09:54 AM

I wear glasses at sometimes. Usually when I am at home. When I'm out Ill wear contacts. I hope to get lasik surgery though at sometime.

Schadenfreude Jun 17, 2006 09:55 AM

I don't know the exact figures, but I guess my eyesight isn't all that good. My astigmatism is quite high, that much I know. I've been wearing glasses for the past 10 years or so, and I can't really survive all that long without them. Yeah, I take them off occasionally but I just prefer to leave them on whenever I can.

I've seen the laser surgery process video and it makes my eyes hurt. :/

Also for the record I wear glasses too. >_>

Belladonna Jun 17, 2006 10:08 AM

Unfortunately yes. I hate glasses. They get dirty, they break, they make me look like an idiot.

starslight Jun 17, 2006 10:08 AM

I do. I have refractive ambylopia (a wide disparity in visual acuity between the two eyes) - my right eye was nearly 20/20, and my left was about 20/60. I had surgery done to repair a muscle in my left eye when I was four which makes it impossible for me to wear contacts, so I wear glasses mainly for my left eye.

I've only been wearing them about three years, though, after an eye exam in high school. I can live without them, but I end up with a headache after a while. I don't mind wearing them - I'm a pretty ugly dude to begin with, so it doesn't really matter how they make me look.

Acro-nym Jun 17, 2006 10:45 AM

I don't really know how to answer. My eyes are in a condition in which I need to wear glasses for only a few things, mainly reading something far away. As such, I usually don't wear them. So... I need to wear eyeglasses, but choose not to wear them. Yep. Definitely not sure how to answer.

Snowknight Jun 17, 2006 10:47 AM

Yes, I wear eyeglasses; I got mine sometime near the end of sixth grade, which was only so because I noticed my ability to read the chalkboard at school plummeting rapidly.

People tell me that I should use contacts instead, but I've grown too accustomed to glasses. I would also be afraid of poking my eyes out when putting them in.

Alice Jun 17, 2006 10:51 AM

Contacts are a pain in the ass. I know, since I wore them for years.

Lasik surgery is a wonderful thing. Oh, and by the way - it doesn't hurt at all.

eriol33 Jun 17, 2006 10:52 AM

I dont really suggest you to wear contact lenses... I heard they might be melted if you are too close with fire or heat source. You might get permanent blindness if not careful. >_>

Little Shithead Jun 17, 2006 10:55 AM

I hear staring at the sun for too long can give you permanent blindness, too.

Can anyone confirm this.

Alice Jun 17, 2006 10:55 AM

Don't forget how prone contact lens wearers are to eye infections. My cousin went blind in one eye because he didn't clean his properly.

Vemp Jun 17, 2006 11:00 AM

No, I don't. But somehow, wearing eyeglasses has become a fashion fad in my area. Silly mortals.

Schadenfreude Jun 17, 2006 11:10 AM

Fashion fad, eh? I honestly feel some people look better with glasses on. Or totally different. Sometimes both.

My dad and I have this odd little ability. We both wear glasses (his are thicker than mine) and we are both somewhat into graphics. The ability deals with our eyes. We both have the same type of eyesight were we can't read at far distances, however, when we look at photos, print quality, or details very closely, we see them with excrutiating detail. It's very useful! The reason on why I wouldn't want to get the Laser Surgery. My father explained this to the eye doctor and he said that the laser would take that ability away from us.

Musharraf Jun 17, 2006 11:16 AM

I used to wear glasses, now I wear contacts and I got pretty much used to it. I am planning to wear color contacts someday, that must be cool (you know, like that guy from Last Action Hero).

My father wears glasses, so I guess it's because of that.

Oh and laser surgeon is still pretty expensive here in Germany since medical insurance won't pay for it.

ava lilly Jun 17, 2006 12:28 PM

I'm actually the only person in my family who doesn't wear glasses or contacts. both of my brothers got their glasses while they were still in elementry school. I'm not sure when my dad got his, but my mom told me she didn't get hers 'til later on in her twenties. I may still need them, but for now my eyesight is perfectly fine.

I look too much like a secretary or teacher with glasses on anyways.

Koneko Jun 17, 2006 12:35 PM

I forget exactly what my eyesight is other than far-sighted and I have an astigmatism in my left eye. I'll wear my glasses most of the time but occasionally I won't wear them. I prefer them over contacts because I see them as more convienent.

Spatula Jun 17, 2006 12:36 PM

I wear this.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i6...76A/11-746.jpg

I am nearsighted, I think. Basically things that are near are easy to see, and far away objects get blurry. I have a -3.50 for my left and -2.75 for my right eye, if my memory serves me well. I've been wearing glasses since grade 10, so for about 6 years now.

I like how the cost of the frames themselves basically net the same cost as a core Xbox 360 in Canadian. :tpg:

Spoiler:
I also like how my benefits plan from work covers for this, plus a bit on prescription.

Outlaw Jun 17, 2006 12:48 PM

I've worn glasses since I was like in first grade, I had a stigma. I stopped wearing them all the time when I turned 14 since I was seeing a little better and for 3 more years I continued the trend of no wearing them inside the house. It seemed like a good idea at the time, lets just say that...

Greykin Jun 17, 2006 12:51 PM

I've been wearing glasses for at least 3years now, got a new like 2 months ago. They're rimless, sorta rectangular, and the lens are transitions. Quite nice, because the frame is so light, I forget I'm wearing them sometimes.

Summonmaster Jun 17, 2006 01:10 PM

I've worn glasses ever since I was 5 or 6 :( Prescription is at least -10 something. Yes, I can pass the "how many fingers am I holding?" test, but not when they're way past arm's length. I can still make out blurry outlines if I were to wander around aimlessly without my glasses, but I'm helpless otherwise. No laser surgery for me yet!

Blanka Jun 17, 2006 01:17 PM

I have glasses, but I don't necessarily need them when I'm on the computer, seeing as how I'm near-sighted. Although, even when I'm not at the computer, I still don't wear them. *shrugs* I doubt I'll be wearing them until i really really need to.

Vkamicht Jun 17, 2006 05:34 PM

My dad has been wearing glasses since I can remember, and my mom only needs them for reading.

I do not wear them and don't need them badly, but they do help. It's like, I can see fine without them, but they do make my vision a bit clearer/sharper. I did have problems a few years ago in high school when I sat in the back of the class. Would've been nice to have some then.

Domino Jun 17, 2006 05:38 PM

I don't wear specs. Which is quite surprising considering how much time i spend in front of the TV and my computer screen.
Rest of my family wear specs though, so i guess it'll get me next.

WolfDemon Jun 17, 2006 05:42 PM

I wear glasses, but they're not prescription lenses. I just wear them because I look good in glasses.

Basil Jun 17, 2006 05:48 PM

I wear eyeware (:tpg:), and I have been for the past three or four years now. I'm nearsighted, which means I can see my computer monitor fine, but it's a bit blurry for me to look at a whiteboard (in class) or at street names on traffic lights.

Needless to say, when I first got my glasses I was impressed on how much better I could see and I never noticed I had gone blind.

Gumby Jun 17, 2006 06:04 PM

I have a -8.00 Rx in both eyes... yeah I wear eye specs

guyinrubbersuit Jun 17, 2006 06:14 PM

I wear glasses. I started wearing them when I was about 18. I guess my vision just slowly started degrading. I really don't care for them and would like to get laser surgery when I'm older. I tried contacts, but they're too much of a hassle.

Siin Jun 17, 2006 06:33 PM

I wear glasses (I'm nearsighted). I think I got them about halfway through the third grade or so. I wear them all the time, except when I'm reading. If I take them off I can't read anything at all on the computer monitor.:tpg: I think the main reason my eyes got so bad is because I read almost constantly, but I know sitting in front of the computer sure doesn't help.

kat Jun 17, 2006 07:11 PM

I've had glasses since I was in 4th grade. I read a lot as a kid, always lying on my bed in some odd angle and in inadequate lighting. My right eye is worst than my left, since I used to lie on my side and prop my book against a wall.

Well I wear contacts now so it's not a big deal. I've gotten to the age where my eyes haven't gotten any worse so, EH. I wear a pair of Coach magenta oval glasses, I'm actually quite fond of the shape.

Dee Jun 18, 2006 01:56 AM

I think the question should be moreso, do you have corrected vision, because I mainly wear contacts during the day, and glasses at night. This sounds like a superhero cliche or something.

I think those "emo" black rimmed glasses are all the fad now, but I never actually thought of wearing glasses for the sake of fashion. It's trouble anyway, especially when you're jogging or walking. And they get in the way of headphones that sling around your ear.

That's why I'm an advocate of contacts. If you keep them clean and use them properly (as in not sleep in them), you shouldn't have any problem. They're not troublesome at all once you get into the routine. I've been wearing contacts since middle school - more than I've been wearing glasses (which is since elementary school).

takeru Jun 18, 2006 03:37 AM

I heard about this and someone told me about staying in front of monitor is not bad for eyes but leave them exaust. If you suffer of short-sightedness as me, that problem is all in your DNA. But soon I'll go to surgeon them: I hope nurse has good hand with laser and doesn't cut off my balls :D

Aardark Jun 18, 2006 03:54 AM

It's free if you're in the army . . . !

Krelian Jun 18, 2006 05:06 AM

I don't wear glasses... Yet. However, I can no longer see clearly out of my right eye, so it's only a matter of time.

Is there any evidence to back up what you seem to be claiming? I've asked my optometrist about this, and he claims that the rate of advancement of myopia is a function of genetics, set at conception.

I do need to wear glasses. I only wear them when I need to use the monitor, or when watching something with subtitles, or things like that. Generally, when I'm walking around, I don't wear them. At first, I also didn't remember to wear them as often as I should, which leads to headaches. I've been getting a little better with that.

I've worn them since I was about 18. It's only been the last four years or so that I've started to wear them regularly. For some reason, I can't get used to having something balanced on my nose. It still feels weird. I don't think I'll ever get used to them, but it's better than the headaches.

My right eye is much (much, much) worse than my left. If both eyes were as bad as my right, I'd wear glasses the whole time. I'd like it if I could do without them entirely, but the alternatives really don't appeal.

Yeah, I was told so too. I did some research, and it appears that there really is no strong direct connection between time spent at the computer and bad eyesight. Which makes sense, considering that there are people who watch television / use computer very little, and still need glasses at the age of twenty.

That is interesting. You can get free driver's licenses (also for heavy trucks) if you join the German army. But no laser surgeon =(

Alice Jun 18, 2006 06:40 AM

Laser surgery is pretty expensive here in the US, and I have never heard of any insurance company covering it, since it's an elective procedure. I had my surgery years ago, and even back then I paid $900 per eye. I'm sure it's more expensive now.

Dekoa Jun 18, 2006 07:53 AM

Well, at least no one on the boards has an eYe StIgMaTa!!!

DarkDraco911 Jun 18, 2006 11:11 AM

I wear glasses, much to my misfortune anyway. ;_;

Well If you say so... I'm not too expert in this field. I thought radiation from monitors plus the burden that must be endured by eyes eventually will cause bad eyesight.

Whew I'm glad to know this. I hope I wont wear any of eyeglasses ever.:)

ieatjackets Jun 18, 2006 02:25 PM

Radiation? Is your monitor located in Chernobyl by any chance?

A4: IN THE DUNGEONS OF THE SLAVE LORDS Jun 18, 2006 02:30 PM

I need them a bit for my left eye because it goes lazy and won't focus properly when I'm tired. My dad has the same issue so it's a genetic thing most likey. My eyes aren't bad enough in general to need them though so I haven't bothered with getting any.

They don't switch from focusing on long to short distances as quickly as they should either which makes say seeing a sign onm the highway really hard but glasses sadly can't fix that issue. The eye doctor stated it as they focus well but at about a third the speed that most peoples do.

lol. Of course not.
But I was using CRT monitor around 4 years. Glad that I have laptop now with LCD monitor.

Fire On Ice Jun 18, 2006 02:36 PM

I have excellent vision. It's kinda bizarre actually, everyone else in my family needs glasses except my oldest brother who by all means should have a monocle, his right eye is fine, but his left is terrible.

Void Jun 18, 2006 02:56 PM

I wore glasses ever since the 5th grade. It was at first just to see the board from far away, then my eyes just got worse and worse and my prescription got higher and higher. I hated wearing glasses, but now I finally got contacts and I've been wearing them for a year with no trouble.

BUt I've been breaking all the contact wearing rules. I usually keep them in for atleast 12 hours. Usually every single day. Sometimes I fall asleep for 5-6 hours in them. Etc. It's only a matter of time before I go blind, fuck.

Deusanimus Jun 18, 2006 05:07 PM

Well I do wear glasses. I normally don't, because my vision isn't all that bad (only 20/50, just barely bad enough to require them when driving) , but if I need to shoot something or find my way around a new part of the wonderful USA, out they come.

HazelGuy Jun 18, 2006 05:43 PM

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pion/guess.gif

And nope, no glasses for me. The optometrist tried though when I went to have my eyes checked last, stabbed me in the eye with the piece of cardboard he was supposed to be holding over each eye while I was reading.

Fleshy Fun-Bridge Jun 18, 2006 06:51 PM

I do wear corrective lenses, and have needed them since 7th grade. I prefer to wear soft contact lenses, but will occasionally pop on the frames when my eyes need a rest.
http://www.sevenbits.net/imgbank/glasses.jpg

Jochie Jun 18, 2006 08:23 PM

I'm nearsighted enough to need glasses, but I've always hated taking care of them and broken every pair I've had. I just gave up after that, but now that I'm going to have the insurance plan thing in a couple months I'll probably get glasses. Having to decide which frames to get is a bitch, too. I hate making fashion choices. I probably would wear the most basic black frames, but now that anything "emo" people do is endlessly referred to as "emo" in a negative way, that's not really an option.

Contacts seem even worse, but maybe I'm just being ignorant. Put little thingies right on my eyeballs? I don't know...

Laser surgery isn't too cheap, I would guess, but that sounds like the best plan right there. Unless they don't put you to sleep during the procedure. I can't sit there and watch them torture my eyes.

Vertigo Sun Jun 18, 2006 08:35 PM

I wear, well, actually, I have glasses, I never got used to using then, I actualy don't need then for daily stuff, just for read, and I usually am too lazy to find then.

Savage100 Jun 18, 2006 11:55 PM

I've only been wearing glasses regularly for three years now. I can't believe that's all it is. They were prescribed to me in 5th grade, but I rarely wore them; I couldn't see anything on a chalkboard for all of grade school except for roughly a year that I tolerated contacts, and my senior year, when I started wearing my glasses all the time.

I'm near-sighted; not blind by any means, but the distance I can make out numbers and words is quite limited.

Orthopox Jun 19, 2006 12:24 AM

I got my glasses in elementary school and I've been wearing them constantly since high school. I just wish I didn't need a new prescription every year. Darn eyes...

ArrowHead Jun 19, 2006 04:39 AM

Yes, I wear eyeglasses. I didn't have to maybe five years ago, but these days I really need them to be able to read for more than half an hour or so.

Mucknuggle Jun 19, 2006 06:32 AM

My eyes are pretty crappy. I need to buy stronger lenses about once a year because my eyes don't seem to ever want to stay the same shape. I used to wear my contact lenses almost exclusively, but now it's more my glasses since I bought some D&G frames. I've got to get my money's worth out of these things!

splur Jun 19, 2006 07:51 AM

yes... since i was 6. and i think it was wrongly prescribed when i first got my glasses which might explain why my eyes became progressively worse. now my eyes are terrible with an addition with astigmatism. hopefully they'll design cheaper contacts for eyes like mine so i can get rid of these things.

lol_nl Jun 19, 2006 08:15 AM

I wear them as well. I wonder what real influence computer has on eye-sight. I noticed many Chinese people have bad eyesight, so maybe it has genetical also a big influence. My father wears glasses, just like my grandmother. And in their time there weren't any computers yet. I believe that bad eye-sight is mostly genetic inherited but things like computers can cause it to be even worse.

For the most part, your eyeballs cannot feel them (or much of anything else, except for the sensation of dryness...). Its your eyelids that have to get used to wearing contacts. The first few weeks of wearing the lenses, you notice them pretty much all of the time. Eventually, you develop calluses on the insides of your eyelids that make wearing the lenses more comfortable, and then you don't notice them at all. After that, you just need to make sure that when you put them in your eyes are nice and lubricated, and the surfaces of the lens are free of debris. Even the smallest speck of dust or hair on the lens will feel like you have a boulder in your eye. You also have to make sure that there are no tears in the lens, and that you aren't putting them in inside-out (soft lenses have a bevelled edge that will scrape against the inside of the eyelid if you put them in wrong. Not damaging, but annoying as hell)

The thought of touching your eye might make you squeemish, but you get used to it. I can push my eyeball around all kinds of ways with my (clean) index finger.
