First Experience Driving
For those of you who drive, what was your learning experience like? Any interesting stories to share?
I drove a car when I was about 14 and spent the year practicing before attending driver's education. I drove around my neighborhood at night, so when I finally went during the day, driving was easier. |
When I had my temp permit, I learned by driving around the block with one of my parents. Just kind of getting the hang of turning and braking and that kind of thing. After about the third or fourth time going around in the same circle, one man whose house I had just passed screamed nice and loud:
GET THE FUCK OUTTA THE NEIGHBORHOOD!! |
i drove half way home from the permit place. i was pretty terrible then so i drove around an empty buisness district and got better.
|
The first time I went driving, I tried to turn without slowing down, as I thought that I only needed to take my foot off the accelerator to slow down. I ended up about an inch from a lamp post, and my dad immediately drove me home. He refused to drive with me until I had a couple sessions with my instructor. :p

HOWEVER, I got lost AGAIN a couple days later. Somehow, I ended up doing a turnabout on the SAME driveway in the same slow, suspicious manner. As soon as I turned into it, I realized that I've been there before. Well, guess who was just stepping out of the house? Spoiler:
Anyways, he proceeded to yell and scream, and I drove away as quickly as possible. :p |
I think I did pretty well to be honest; the car moved about 3 foot. Well, I say moved; I stalled it while we were not moving and it jumped. We were in a carpark on a busy saturday in broad daylight too, and I was only 13 at the time.
|
hehe in driver's education i almost killed my passengers by driving full on into a huge boulder!
|
My real first experience was doing a burnout in my father's old built chevy C10...then i took the Civic around the block a few times and went to get my license. Passed the test too, surprisingly.
|
When I was 15 in North Carolina, you could take a huge written test (like 300 questions) on a weekend, and if you passed that, you only had to take 3 days of driver's ed. The driver's ed was nothing but getting in the car and driving around town.
It was very confusing at first, because I had never driven before, and suddenly, I'm behind the wheel and the instructor is telling me to head out on the highway. That's right, no time on the driving range, just straight into traffic. I did alright (except for that one time where I confused the gas with the brake), but it's amazing they didn't have more accidents. Maybe they did, since the test is no longer an option, and everyone has to take driver's ed. |
How won't I remember my first time? I hydroplaned after 15 minutes of driving. Other than that, nothing much but it is quite fun!
|
It took me awhile to actually start driving after I got my permit. I was 15 I think and I drove my mom to the store. It was the first time I had actually been behind the wheel of a vehicle and I underestimated the pressure sensitivity of the acceleration pedal.
Nothing really exciting happened. My mother just got home quicker than she was used to. |
First time was around last year in July. I passed my written test on the second attempt, so a couple of days later I tried to practice in our narrowly confined underground parking complex. It consisted of "drive" and "reverse" without turning. Oh man, the "reverse" part was disastrous! I never knew that the car goes by itself even if you don't press the accelerator, so I reversed and drove much faster than I desired. My dad and I were screaming our heads off at each other, both out of anger. I didn't bother to attempt driving again for a while, where I moved into a nice spacious parking lot a couple of weeks after.

My first time driving I was 12 and my uncle let me drive his rental car. He always got the insurance on those things and never cared what happened, so I took it for a drive around the block and it was fun ^^ |
My mom took me to the local mall afterhours and I nearly ran over a cat.
|
I don't so much remember my first driving experience, however I remember the first time driving on I-75 in Michigan. To make it short and sweet, my hands were numb for a little while after all was said and done.
|
I just got my liscense and now I have to learn to drive a stick. It is living hell and nowhere near as smooth as an auto. Fucking clutch. Stalling in the middle of an intersection is unpleasant.
|
I would have been no more than 5 years old when i had my first driving experience.
It involved me sitting on my uncles lap holding the steering wheel while he drove up and down the quiet street my nana lives on. I'm sure at the time i thought i was the bomb. |
Can't really say anything interesting. Mainly a high school parking lot, my dad in the passenger's seat, and me behind the wheel, with my dad firing off things that I've forgotten to pay attention to.
|
Let's see, wheelspun the start so my mother's nerves were shot from the start. Kept on the speed limit for the most part but going round a quiet corner towards a farm, my co-driver panicked and shouted 'break! break! break!' thus causing me to panic and hit the accelerator instead...
Nobody was injured, barring the car's bonnet. Thankfully a hedge was on the recieving end and not another car nor a wall... or a person. |
I have my L. My driving instructor thought it would be a good idea to learn how to cross intersections first, learn how to turn second, then got tired of me and told me to get some practice, I havn't seen him since. The first day hes like "ok go right, now left, right, NOW LEFT AT THIS INTERSECTION, GO, GO!!!!!! That freaked me out a bit since I only had been driving 5 minutes at the time, then he thought we'd better practice some more turning so he told me to go down this long windy road with a speed limit of 80. I wasn't even comfortable driving slow... The worst part of it is he smells really bad, he smells like the combination of cigarette smoke, and old people. I am not looking forward to finishing my leasons!
I thought it would be worth mentioning that my mom just witnessed a cute fluffy kitty get flattened under the weight of the van in front of her *SQUISH* :( |
The only thing I particularly remember from learning to drive is that the first instructor I had, and who was changed after the first lesson, was a right bastard. I was taking my first lesson towards the end of a school day when I had no lessons, I said to the instructor that I'd like to avoid going near the school as a) it was not a nice area to drive as there was some awkward roads and b) it'd only make me nervous, but even so the git made me go down there anyway during peak traffic time and as everyone was leaving. I wanted to punch him in the face after that.
Once I changed instructors it was a pretty uneventful process and 13 lessons later I had a licence. |
I was eleven when my brother let me have a shot at driving his Series 2A land rover 'round a field. I haven't driven a car since, but these days I dart around the French countryside on an old Vespa.
|
I remember backing into someones garbage bins when I was learning to drive, I thought it was pretty funny, probably because my driving instructor almost shit his pants. I TOLD HIM THERE WERE BINS BEHIND US, but nooo, keep reversing anyway! Not too long after getting my license, I was nearly wiped out by a bus. That was also kinda funny, but in the horrifying you almost died kind of way. That was like what, six years ago or something. I've never driven since. It's probably for the best!
|
Well, well.
My first experience of actual street driving was terrible. I kept making mistake after mistake that I kept cursing to myself, wondering how come I'm so darn stupid. Luckily nobody got hurt. ^^ |
I started out as a crappy driver. I barely got my Driver's liscense in January of this year. I'm a bit better at driving compared to when i first started, but I'd still say I am I crappy driver.
|
My first experience driving was right after I got my permit with my father. I had to drive the stationwagon which we owned at the time. The car always had the tendency to automatically steer slightly to the right, so it was very difficult for me to get the hang of it.
My best experience came when I took a 5-hour driving lesson in Colorado, a place with roads I was completely unfamiliar with. |
Don't really remember. I know I was driving a 2000 Honda Civic. It was a nice car. Nothing particularly memorable though. I didn't nearly hit anything. I'm guessing I drove up and down my street when I was 15.

I remember on like week 2 of In Class our instructor had us get in a car that day and drive a big oval. I remember I got in all NASCAR-style and put one foot on the brake and one on the gas and attempted to drive like that. I remember nearly sending the car off of the upper level of our school's parking lot before he told me to exit the car. The actual In Car Sessions went much smoother other than his countless tauntings of, "Have you been drinking that liquor, boy?"
|
I think I was around 12 or 13 when I first drove a car. My mother is a fucking crazy lunatic and let me drive her van at the time in an empty parking lot in Westboro. It was an automatic, and I remember being amazed at how EASY it was to drive.
On the weekends when I would visit her, she'd usually let me go driving around those lots as an activity. I learned how to drive really early on and got accustomed to being at the helm way before my years. I didn't get my actual license until I was 18. And Pang was there when I did get it. (Which is something that amazes me even today.) I never took driver's ed. It doesn't seem to help anyone in our area, except in the insurance way. |
My first driving experience was my first driving lesson some months before... I still must have some lessons before getting tested for my driver's license...
It's not as easy as in America to get it in Germany ;) |
While nothing exciting happened when I was learning to drive a car (either automatic or later a manual) but I do remember having fun trying to learn a manual school bus. Yes, I have had some lessons on how to drive the big old school bus. Believe me when I tell you this...driving those things in reverse is a royal pain in the ass. Luckily, the building's walls were made out of sheetrock and I wasn't going very fast.
|
I remember that my first driving experience was in Drivers ED. It was interesting but the guy was a prick.
I caught onto driving quite easily due to the racing games I play in first person. Now I want outta first person view, Too disorienting. |
I ended up being the best driver in my family....after I was done being the worst learner. The first time I ever drove, I turned a corner, and, uh...never stopped turning. I ended up turning right into a ditch at a church, and my dad and I had fun getting it out of there. -_-;; Took me a good month before I could drive like a decent human being.
|
i remember my first experience driving like it was almost 15 years ago....wait it was. I was trying to concentrate and all I could hear was my dad screaming at me.
"Keep the car in the right lane! Don't go so fast! What the hell are you stupid! Pull over now! No not here. Damnit!" From what I hear though I had a much better experience than what happened when he tried to teach my older sister to drive. Old people are so cranky. |
First day I had my permit, I drove my dad's 1981 Silverado standard down the main highway..... Was prtty scarry! The clutch was very tricky. I stalled out many times.... :(
|
Ah, i remember the first couple times I drove. I had a tendency to not use the brakes because I thought the car would slow down if I let go of the clutch and willed the damn car to stop. Hahaha, I think I freaked the instructor a whole lot. He'd step on the brakes for me, instead. It's fun, though, learning to drive, testing the patience of the drivers around you. I'm just glad I was able to get hanging and parallel parking the first try.
|
The first time I went driving, my parents (first mistake: my mother was in the car) took me out in the country in our old '98 Mercury Villager van. I got in the driver's seat and proceeded to cross my arms turning the steering wheel and plowed into a cornfield, while my mom was screaming in the backseat.
:( They didn't take me driving for a few months after that. |
The first time I drove.. I kept thinking I would step too hard on the accel pedal and the car go flying...........
But then driving isn't hard at all... |
All I remember the first time I drove is my mother screaming "YOUR GOING TO *BLEEP* KILL US ALL!" The j"OYs" of having a learner's permit. The another time in a parking lot I freaked out and thought the car was messed up. I kept hitting my foot on the brake, my mother finally realized this and told me. :\ But those were my first times legally driving.
When I was about two or three yrs old my mom got out of the car for a minute with my baby brother in the backseat. I somehow thought I could drive the car, took it out of park and rolled it into a ditch. That was the LAST time she ever got out the car with me in there by myself for even a second. |

I think the first time I drove was when I was 16. My sister just suddenly decided to let me drive. I was terrible, and I almost hit my dad's car. The second time though was much better. We were on vacation and we were on a resort village or whatever the hell you call them. It was great.

My first time driving a car was pretty average I guess. Was in my mother's 03 Mustang GT. I did alright, I suppose. I was like 15.
First time on a motorcycle (my primary transport atm) was much different. It was my friend's bike, and I had no idea how the thing worked at all, but I was interested in giving it a shot so dammit, I did. I get on, and try to start it. Doesn't start. I pull in the clutch and hit the ignition and the engine comes to life. So, after learning that in order to move I have to bring the thing out of neutral and into first gear, I immediately stall it out (taking my hand off the clutch of course). After about ten minutes of messing around with what was at the time a new concept to me (I had never driven a standard shift in a car) I finally began to inch forward. The bike stuttered a little bit but I made my way down the road (in a subdivision, mind you). Unfortunately, I found myself coming up to a turn so I did what was natural to me: turned the handle bars. My direction didn't really change. My friend is running after me telling me I have to lean. I shift my body weight a little in the direction I want to go and voila, I'm turning! Hurrah! Relieved, I make my way back to my friend, having had enough of motorcycle riding. I near him, hit the brakes and (due to my height [like 5'3" on a crotch rocket]) sort of just lay the bike over. Luckily it was an old bike. I actually swore off motorcycle riding for a while, saying it wasn't for me. But I ended up giving in a couple months later and decided I wanted to learn for real. It took a while, but I'm a good rider now. |
My first time driving involved a restored WWII jeep, steep hill and a lumpy field. I was there as part of a group of other guys fishing/hunting/etc.. and our host took a liking to us. Next thing you know he brings out the jeep, teaches us how to drive stick (some of us didn't get it, which led to some funny moments) and off we went.
I did pretty well going down the hill and turning, but he had me go back up via the hill and almost succeeded in launching everyone out of the jeep. Ah, good times. |
First driving experience would have to be during my first driving lesson with the instructor (Well my parents wouldn't allow me to touch the car before that). I was 17 then. Nothing much happened besides the car dying a few times (tried balancing) and I jumped at every chance to drive after I got my P. Now I'm driving those heavy Volvo tanks once in a while, and back to my own small little car during school days.
I must admit, sitting in my sister's car was far more dangerous. She didn't know how to brake most of the time and she scratched the car's bottom several times. :D |
My first driving experience is nothing really special, driving around in a parking lot by the ocean.
However, I do have an interesting story about driving, it happened earlier today actually. There are these tunnels I drive through every day, they take me through the mountain range that separates the island of 'Oahu in half (I live in Hawaii). Anyway, I was eating a mint. Not a particularly good mint. In fact, these mints are so weak that half way through, they pretty much lose all flavor, so I usually just chuck them out the window. As I'm driving through the tunnel, I roll down the window and proceed to flick said mint off my finger. It sticks, and I keep trying to get it off. Suddenly, there's a thump, and my car is tilting. I had accidentally driven up onto the sidewalk/walkway that runs through the tunnel. I turn the car back onto the road and manage not to crash into anything else, but it was amazingly scary. I'm sure the driver behind me thought I was on ice or something. Anyway, yeah. This is especially embarrassing because while I've been driving since I was 15 and a half, although I only recently got around to getting my actual license (I just turned 20 last month). |
