Quest 64: Who remembers this PIECE?

http://speeddemosarchive.com/gfx/Quest64.jpg

Did anyone actually play this? And if so, did you ever play it again? I remember getting this when it came out and being pretty excited. I guess it kept me busy for a while, but the game was SO linear. After beating it, and being more pissed at its ending than any other game's, I put it away. The thing has NO replay value.

The story was pretty intriguing though, for me at least. You're a magician's apprentice assigned the task of tracking down your missing father and a mysterious book of magic. Throughout the game, I enjoyed the implication that you were always a couple of steps behind him the whole time (a la FF7, but having played Quest first I'm more inclined to be reminded of this game than FF7).

I also liked the levelling-up system, which followed the "the more you use, the better you are at it" policy. This went for HP and MP too. For some reason I prefer this system over the more widespread method of experience points.

Quest 64 is just old enough to inspire some nostalgia.

So. Did anyone play it? Did anyone like it? Overall just about every possible plot point ends up being an utter disappointment.

Sir VG Jun 3, 2006 01:19 AM

I thought it was one of the most BORING RPGs in the history of mankind. I think I played to the first boss and that was about it.

Surprisingly, somebody did suffer though the game enough to speedrun it over at speeddemosarchive.com

I am watching that right now.

Borg1982 Jun 3, 2006 01:35 AM

I'm a giant Nintendo fan but I liked the n64 the least because of its weak, weak RPG's. (despite Kart 64 being the best multi game for its time and arguably the best game that isn't an RPG out at the time).

Technophile Jun 3, 2006 02:43 AM

I clearly remember this game. It's very nostalgic to me. Funny thing is, I never played it but I remember making fun of the damn game often when it first came out just cause it had such a bad rep.

Free.User Jun 3, 2006 02:52 AM

I liked it.... :(

But I think that was because it was the first RPG I ever played, and If I remember correctly, the first game I actually sat down and played.

God you make me feel so old.

This game reminded me of lego sets.

Andrew Evenstar Jun 3, 2006 04:42 AM

hahah omfg, i played this on my uncles console copier for n64 and it sucked. the above poster, i agree n64 sucked balls with rpgs

chato Jun 3, 2006 07:25 AM

This game deserves a remake or a port to the ds XD.

imho, i liked it cause it was the first rpg on n64 for me. The boss battle sounded cool at least XD. The only thing that bothered me was those random battles (this one monster keeps reminding me of Fox Mcloud from Star Fox >.> ) that keep popping out of nowhere and when you have to use healing items.. you have to use it every damn second and you're left with shit.

I never got to beat it.Im only at that Ice Girl fight and from there i stopped playing it.I should give it another try.

kelesis Jun 3, 2006 08:17 AM

Quest 64 is the most creative name for a game ever. And damn was it a bad game.

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 Jun 3, 2006 09:35 AM

I liked it despite the boringness. There's also a GBC port which plays a little better imo.

Goubot Jun 3, 2006 09:37 AM

The N64 at least had Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario. They're not the greatest, but they're at least something. But yeah, the N64 was terrible for RPGs.

Q64 was really boring and linear. I don't think it was mind-bogglingly bad like some other RPGs, though. I do hear that its GBC version is better, which is kinda sad.

Cobalt Katze Jun 3, 2006 10:06 AM

All that game did for me was make me realize how much more I enjoyed Ocarina of Time. I think I played it once, got to the first boss, and then never touched the cartrige again.

pyrus421 Jun 3, 2006 10:33 AM

This was so long ago...

The ice cave was HUEG LIEK XBOX. Only thing that kept me going was that ambient music.

If anyone has the music rip for this game, send me it! :edgartpg:

value tart Jun 3, 2006 11:54 AM

This game was pretty fucking awful. Boring. Terrible.

But I like it because compared to its piece of shit "sequel", Quest for the GBC, Quest 64 is a fucking gem.

BUT STILL, YUCK.

Contracts Jun 3, 2006 01:16 PM

I do remember this title, It was probably the first title I had ever inserted into my N64 other then Blast Corps and Zelda 64. Sadly though, It was the also the last time I ever put that title in my N64. At the time I WAS too young to fully enjoy the title although I do remember that the battle system was very boring from what I played. I only ever rented this game based on the fact that it looked like a Zelda 64 style game, Sadly it wasn't. Now, I would like to try this again and see if it was based on my young age that I didn't understand it enough to like it, But hopefully it was just lack of entertainment and the use of the boring battle system.

Are you joking? Ogre Battle 64 is flat out amazing. A beautiful, amazing title.

Also, as bad as Quest was, Aidyn Chronicles was worse. Oh god was that game bad.

Gechmir Jun 3, 2006 01:32 PM

I sold my N64 around when this piece of garbage rolled around. The only reason to own an N64 was Mario 64. That was IT in my opinion.

Ogre Battle had a PS1 release which was quite fun. But had glitches ><# But I'll be damned if Ogre Battle isn't one of the finest RPGs ever. I still love it.

I remember seeing this get released and I said to my brother "Ahahaha! Nintendo remembered that they need to make an RPG ;D" Of course, I figured it would be crap just by looking at it. I've developed a sense over the years.

Acacia Jun 3, 2006 02:32 PM

...I still have the godamn overworld music stuck in my head. T_T

I remember me and my brother playing it a lot (in fact, this was probably the first game where I stayed up past 2am to play it). It was years ago, and I was like, 12 at the time.

I kinda enjoyed the game. Bad game overall, but it's quite nostalgic~

Can you even identify what the blur that is?

nanstey Jun 3, 2006 03:53 PM

I rented it to see what it was like - Never got past the first field. It was HORRID. Not until Zelda and Ogre Battle came out did the N64 have any good PRG's.

Actually Zelda WAS the reason this game sucked. It did have great potential, but they rushed it to be out before Zelda came out because they knew they couldn't compete. Sad really.

Conqueso Jun 3, 2006 09:05 PM

I played that game. I remember kind of liking it. Then again, I have pretty low standards when it comes to games--as long as it keeps me occupied, I'm fine with it. So what do I know. I do remember WTFing at the ending though. Shannon's plot line was random liek whoa. And what happened to Brian's dad after all? Did he die or what? Didn't get it at all.

Holy shit, someone else liked the music. I'll second that request. ^_^

Prinnydood Jun 4, 2006 12:06 PM

I played it a long time ago and actually got pretty far. Forgot the boss' name but it was some lady with like a blue background or something...then my brother accidently erased the file heh...

Its a pretty crap game IMO though...every area's the same. Town, forest, cave, repeat. Plus the crappy clown music for the overworld was horrific.

Klondike Jun 5, 2006 09:29 AM

The overworld music was terrific, I don't know what you're talking about Prinnydood. I'm being serious. But that was the only real standout part to the game. I enjoyed playing through it the once, but it'd be tough to do it again.

I have the Quest 64 overworld MP3 if anyone wants it, I ripped it myself.

PiccoloNamek Jun 5, 2006 09:34 AM

I don't remember that game, but I do remember Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon. That game completely kicked ass.

How much of the music have you ripped? Just the overworld track? I'm actually kind of interested in a complete rip of the game's music.

Now that game warrants its own fucking thread.

Tortalius Jun 12, 2006 03:20 PM

I liked the game. I did manage to finish it, but only because i used a ton of earth magic, so I got the invincible spell. The game got a tad better at the end since the scenory changed.

I was stuck on the fight with the water gem lady for months. She was so friggin hard.

Hell yes. I wish I actually bought it instead of renting it like 5 times from Blockbuster back in the day.

cubed Jun 13, 2006 04:29 PM

My friend lent me the game long time ago, I beat the game. Wasn't the greatest game ever. But then another friend of mine lent me the game last year so I could rip the music (35 tracks in total). So I really played it twice. and see, I'm still alive. The game was easy. I just didn't like the random battle in the blue cave. That place was a big labyrinth. Anyway the music was great.

EDIT: Well if you want to download my rip, it's on D-7's FTP

TheDude Jun 17, 2006 01:33 AM

Wow. That brought back some memories. Personally, I didn't find the game to be that bad, even though I got to the final area and just kind of lost interest. Of course, this is from hazy memories from times past. If I played it again today, I may cringe. The music is better than I remember. Nothing amazing, but not bad at all, especially the catchy field theme.

SouthJag Jun 22, 2006 01:01 AM

Now see, I liked this game. Sure it basically sucked, but it was at least semi-entertaining. I remember being stuck at some ice cavern and never completely the thing, but still. Never completed the game though. I got to some boss I couldn't defeat because I was playing like an RPG noob -- running through the game too quickly without levelling or gaining new spells.

JasonTerminator Jun 22, 2006 01:21 AM

It was really a distraction for me until Zelda 64 came out.

I liked a lot of the game though. The only major problem I had was the fucking overworld music getting stuck in your head because it's all you ever heard. I can still remember that shit NOW.

Lizardcommando Jun 22, 2006 01:44 AM

I remembered hating that game.

SouthJag Jun 22, 2006 02:04 AM

Hahaha. His footsteps sound like an old fashioned fap-fap-fap fest. No wonder my grandparents always kept the door opened when I played at their house.

Infernal Monkey Jun 22, 2006 02:23 AM

I remember Konami delaying the PAL version so they could rename it to;

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5828/hmc6qp.jpg

In a hopeless attempt to escape the awful scores it had gotten from American publications. "MAYBE IT WILL BE A BETTER GAME IF WE PUT MORE THAN FOUR SECONDS WORTH OF EFFORT INTO THE TITLE!"

Spoiler:
no =(

JasonTerminator Jun 22, 2006 03:42 PM

That Euro box art is a bajillion times better than the US box art though.

Cellius Jun 23, 2006 10:15 AM

http://www.classicgaming.com/rpg/SCRNSHOT/q64-logo.jpg

I love how they changed the friggin' title of the game for PAL. Until now I didn't know that. I did grab cubed's rip and actually listen to it from time to time; brings back the memories.

The same shit happened with me. You couldn't level up anywhere that was close to a villiage. As soon as i got into that ice cavern, there was no turning back. I fought and used up most of my items and had no chance in beating that ice queen boss-whatever >.>..

I wonder if anyone has the gamerip for this >=]

THIEF Jun 24, 2006 10:25 PM

My brother rented the game a long time ago. It wasnt that fun. It was somewhat and strangely addictive tho...

Never finished it and had to return it. In any case, I didnt finish the game but I dont feel like I missed much.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 25, 2006 01:14 AM

For those hankering for a rip, you can find an archive of miniusfs at Zophar's right here: http://www.zophar.net/usf/

I assume you know how usfs work.

pisscart deluxe Jun 28, 2006 06:43 PM

We rented it, and I suffered it to about the halfway point, I think. The battle system is what got me. Those fucking rings, or zones, or whatever you want to call them, that were impossible to navigate. Other than that it wasn't horrible - just boring and subpar.

N64 games that were worth it:

Goldeneye, Mario 64, Mariokart 64, OoT, Pilotwings 64.

End.

orborborb Jul 2, 2006 03:32 PM

Quest 64 was utterly worthless, and Paper Mario was fun once but I'd never play again.

Aidyn Chronicles however, is one of my favorite RPGs of all time (right up there with Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 9, Baldur's Gate, Suikoden II, and Xenogears). If you are a connoisseur of classic dungeons and dragons style RPGs I think you will find Aidyn Chronicles to be quite amazingly addicting. The level design, stat system, and battle system are my favorite of any RPG, and the creepy atmosphere, music, characters, plot etc. makes for a unique and rewarding experience.

Just read up in a FAQ about all the things that affect your characters' performance in a battle and you will probably know whether the game is for you or not. Also, if the fact that once a character dies he/she is dead forever with no resurrection makes you as excited as it makes me, buy the game. Oh, and take note that none of the screenshots of the game online do ANY justice to the incredible overworld design.

edit: The other most overlooked N64 game is Shadowgate 64, an awsomely creepy classic adventure game. Ogre Battle 64 is pretty well known but it is true that it is one of the best tactical RPGs of all time (only Fire Emblem Pool of Radiance and Vandal Hearts II are superior in my opinion).

Pronouncing your username aloud is quite amusing.

Music? That shit was the WORST music I have ever heard.

I also thought the RPG was boring.
