Pirate Bay? Sweden bites the dust.
It seems the Swedish government is coming down hard on these bit torrent servres.

Can another bit torrent site as big as suprnova come down? |
Or perhaps not:

I think the bigger they are, the more likely to come down they are, so yes. It seems like a complete possibility. The key to PSP, apparently, is by staying small enough to fly under the radar. That makes me sad, though. TPB is where I got a lot of the Kaizers Orchestra fan videos that are really unavailable through any other torrent site or download location :(.
I'm sure TPB is itching to go to court over this. They seem to really enjoy snubbing their noses at people who try to take them down for copyright infringement. |
It would be bad if any torrent site went down, but I have to say that I don't care to much for TPB, as it's not my preferred site for torrents. But still, if it is permanently shut down (which I doubt it will be), I would still miss it, as it's always good to have other options.
|
Well, I can't say I ever used it, but it sucks just the same.
I only hope Isohunt doesn't ever go down, then I'll just be screwed. |

I was just reading the MPAA press release and I'm currently :eyebrow: I wish they'd atleast stop with idiotic shit like "The major motion picture studios lost an estimated $6.1 billion to piracy in 2005". also |
I'd hate to see a future where you really can't pirate anything without being extremely underground about it.
|
This isn't going to last and we're just going to get to see more extremely rude TPB responses to legal threats.

All I need is MiniNova and search engines like IsoHunt or TorrentSearch. Other sites can do whatever they like =). But it's sad that they are striking back on other web sites like SuprNova.
|
I love the Pirate Bay. When they first went down like two days ago, I fucking cried. I get EVERYTHING there...
|
PirateBay might be just the beginning. But as long as there are alternatives like mininova or torrentspy, we don't have to worry ;)

Actually, Mininova hosts .torrent files. You can even upload your own to their directory. They're not a tracker, but they have their own torrents.
Either way, shutting down ThePirateBay will accomplish nothing but three other link/tracker pages to emerge in place of the original. Fighting a P2P protocol is fighting a lost cause. |

They'll eventually start fighting the users.
Happened with the Donkey... Will happen here. Only... Then there'll be less people to buy their stuff. Plus, two new methods of P2P will emerge. I guess unless "they" go for full net traffic control, P2P will not be something that can be killed. |

Apparently US officials forced the Swedish administration to shut PB down. Super =/ Also: http://www.sonymusicstudios.co.uk/ lol (?) |

I don't really miss TPB that much, well I loved the way they responded to all the assholes requesting torrents removal but latelly downloading from Pirates was a risky buisness. I mean, shitload of fakes and other "additional" stuff that stupid people put on the tracker.

I didn't use PirateBay much, but I am still pissed at how this was handled (and many people on swedish forums as well).
Seanne already brought up the point about the Minister forcing the police into action. Some political parties have voiced their dislike, and I think at least one of them said they were going to go even further (bringing the police into it once again XD). This move also affected several other sites which have no connection to filesharing at all. They were in the same "server park" (is that the English term, not sure?). Not to mention, as far as I know, it isn't illegal to host .torrent files on your servers (in Sweden at least). Will be interesting to see what happens in the next few days for sure. I wonder what people here will say if The Pirate Bay is up and running again soon like it says on their site... hehe. |
TPB has dodged the bullet times before, I'm sure they could rebound.
|
Although it was disappointed to see TPB go down, it isn't as much as a blow to me as when suprnova.org was forced down. Anyway, one torrent site down means two in the making. And google is a great site for hard to find torrents as well (if they're seeded). They can't shut down search engines like that.
|
I think the most appalling thing of all this is the fact that the fucking U.S.A. and MPAA got involved. Mind your own fucking business, assholes!
Of course, it's pretty damn weak of the Swedish government to have fallen under the pressure. I only hope that the case is thrown out and TPB resumes its activities. They do have a lawyer, I doubt they would have lasted this long if they were really breaking Swedish law. |

Anyway, The tracker is up again. |
Oh, well - what a relief.
I'm sure it would have been a major loss in the bittorrent tracker department. |
Back up by the end of the week, just as I expected.
|
well, even if they do manage to shut down tracker sites people can always use mirc. they say it's a much safer way to grab stuff
|
I talked to the owner of TPB today (he's a friend) and he said that they got nothing on them and they expect to be back to 100% anytime.
|
Well, TPB is back up, the search function should be up and running later today.
|
Haha, I like the cannons shooting down "Hollywood".

I've heard that Sweden's filesharing group is as powerful as the US's gun lobby. So it's no surprise that TPB is back up. The takedown there is equivalent to taking down a major gun saler, met with extreme anger and resistance. I just hope this is the end of TPB's troubles.
