The All-Inclusive Upcoming RPG Anticipation/Discussion Thread

I haven't bought a new game in a few months. I think the titles that have been coming out have been pathetic and sort of bland. Now, we see Mother 3 screens, the Tales of Phantasia port is coming out, the new Shadow Hearts title, Kingdom Hearts II (I'm iffy on this one) and a ton of other stuff. I'm happy. You happy?

Peter Mar 2, 2006 03:07 PM

It's a pretty good time to be in RPGs. I'm really anticipated by Shadow Hearts 3, since I loved the second one so much. I really hope that it lives up to it's predecessor. Don't forget Suikoden V, which isn't confirmed yet, but it's supposed to come out near the end of this month. It's getting rather good critics in Japan, especially compared to IV, so I'm hyped about it (and it's the Faleena kingdom, who wouldn't like that).

No. Hard Pass. Mar 2, 2006 03:10 PM

I'm actually not too hyped for V. I haven't really liked a Suikoden game since II. They've let me down every single time, so I don't think I'll even bother with this one. The second that game got mainstream success, it got horrible.

ComCrimson Mar 2, 2006 03:29 PM

Definitely an awesome time for RPG's in these next few months. Shame it's all coming at once after having like no RPG's for about a year. Well, no decent ones. The ones i'm looking forward to the most are Tales of Legendia, Grandia III, Baten Kaitos II, Shadow Hearts:From The New World, FFXII, and KHII. I'm gonna need alot of money me thinks

I've heard too many good things about Suikoden V, though. III and IV were pretty bland, I thought, but weren't horrible games outright. Suikoden V, from the few screens and movies I've seen, seems to feel like a pre-Suikoden III game, which I am extremely happy to see.

It's the game I'm looking forward to most, I suppose, other than perhaps Mother III.

Peter Mar 2, 2006 03:35 PM

I really hope that they'll give Shadow Hearts 3 a PAL release date sometime soon (if it even gets released here, since there hasn't been any news about it). If not, I'll just have to use illegal ways to get my hands on it.

As for Suikoden V, I'm pretty hyped, since it already looks like a huge improvement from IV (atleast the hero doesn't look like a douche). I'm also probably one of the only people who liked the third game (except for the Trinity System, way too slow), so I haven't written the series of yet.

I'm curious, have you tried Tactis? I know you are a huge fan of FFT, so strategy games might be your interest. I've only been in it for a few hours, but it already has more of the whole pirate atmosphere that I wanted to see in IV.

katchum Mar 2, 2006 04:25 PM

Is Disgaea somewhere near FFT?

RYU Mar 2, 2006 04:42 PM

I play now Tales of Legandia and Grandia III are verygood games

It's FF Tactics. On acid. In hell.
I myself have it way high on my list of favorite games. :P

Wow. i didn't even know they had a Tales of Phantasia port in production! =O
When is it due out? What console? or should i just save myself time and google it?

ShadowScythe Mar 2, 2006 08:11 PM

omfg i'm waiting for about a million games right now...*sighs*
my poor poor wallet...o well ^^;;

i really wish capcom would stop screwing around with Phoenix Wright and just put it on the ds like they did for the first one...*sighs*...instead of putting it on a goddamn phone...and only for VERIZON users to boot...>.<...

Jinn Mar 2, 2006 08:35 PM

I'm really excited about Mother 3 and Shadow Hearts III more than anything. I'll definitly be getting the new Shadow Hearts this month. As for Mother 3, I'm going to try my best to not download the Japanese rom and play it without knowing what the fuck is going on.

Of course, I am looking forward to Elder Scrolls IV as well. I've been eager for it's release ever since I heard it was in development. Luckily my computer will be able to run it no problem. I was a little worried my specs would be underpar but I have just the right equipment to run it at a normal graphic setting.

And who could forget about Suikoden V? I don't even need to say the reason's why I'm buying this gem.

All and all, I'm glad I have something in terms of games to be excited about for the next few months.

Borg1982 Mar 2, 2006 09:03 PM

I'm not sure that it is a good time for RPG's. The only 9 out of 10 or higher RPG that came out in the last 6 years (that is not a remake) is Dragon Quest 8. Haven't seen much else that's great.

Single Elbow Mar 2, 2006 09:27 PM

Legendia and Grandia III came out virtually the same month. 2 great ones.

Since I'm playing Legendia, I'm looking forward to KH2 and Shadow Hearts 3. While not on the pinnacle of greatness, fun this couple of months is enlarged.

Borg1982 Mar 2, 2006 09:36 PM

Is Legendia part of Legend of Legaia series or is that incorrect?

Chaco Mar 2, 2006 09:50 PM

Shadow Hearts 2 sucked. I couldn't stand its WWII theme or it's disgustingly confusing battle system. But that's just me, A lot of people liked it.

And Legendia I think is Tales of Legendia, so its a Tales series not Legaia.

With Wild Arms 4/CodeF, Grandia III and ToL already out and with KHII and Suikoden V and FFXII on the horizon I have a bit of catching up to do.

Just because reviewers don't give a game a 9/10, doens't mean that no good games come out. I loved some more recent releases, like Digital Devil Saga, which already ranks pretty high among my favourites, but I personally don't have any interest in DQ8, even if it's supposedly one of the best games in the last years. I tend not to look at review scores anyway.

Legendia is a part of the tales series, like Tales of Phantasia, Destiny or Eternia. The Legaia series only had two games, and I don't think that we'll see another one of those.

SouthJag Mar 3, 2006 12:58 PM

With all of these RPGs being released, re-released, and getting sequels....

WHERE IS MY LEGEND OF DRAGOON SEQUEL YOU BASTARDS!

Seriously. ; ;

But it is a great time for RPGs. Grandia 3, Dragon Quest 8, Tales of Legendia...those are my top 3 out of what, 7 that have been released in the past 4 months?

Spatula Mar 3, 2006 02:14 PM

Don't forget about Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Silmeria now. It looks like the last disc in my PS2 right now is VP. I'm approximately 50%-60% done at just the beginning of chapter 5, and I doubt I'll be able to get the A ending this time around on medium difficultly.

I'm not all that drawn into other RPGs at this moment, considering I have a mountain of old PS1 RPGs to get through, but FFXII also tops the list. Yes, I'm happy, even though it looks like FFXII is out probably summer or late fall for the North American release, and I'm not too sure where VP2's release date stands for us as well.

Peter Mar 3, 2006 06:47 PM

It'll still be a while before we see the VP sequel, this thread is mostly for the RPG's coming up in the next few months. It's not even sure yet if the game will receive a US release date, I believe.

nazpyro Mar 4, 2006 12:14 AM

It is an awesome time. Honestly, I haven't played out an RPG since Tales of Symphonia, and I'm pretty hyped for Kingdom Hearts II. It also comes at a time when I'll be done with a lot of this semester's heavy schoolwork load, leaving me with plenty of slacking-off time for this, my final semester of college.

khan0plinger Mar 4, 2006 03:26 AM

I still have trouble adjusting to some of these new age console rpgs. I think the last one that I truly played and enjoyed was Star Ocean III. I tried out Shadow Hearts 2, and plan on Kingdom Hearts II but I still think I prefer the old school simple graphics.

Although the PSX era of RPGS for me was probably the best. Yes, I enjoyed FF8, and even 9.

It is indeed a great time for RPG's. Also, Disgaea 2 is on the horizon, which I kind of group with rpg's. I had forgotten about Wild Arms 4; might pick that up. Will definitely pick up Shadow Hearts 3. I'm playing 1 now, and it's definitley in my top 5 of all time.

Jarllax Mar 6, 2006 04:43 PM

Ok so I am currently "in between" jobs after a 3 month contract programming job and am looking for a good game to keep me occupied while bored.

What I was wondering is if Grandia 3 would be a good game for me. As far as other RPGs go I've played and loved all the FF games, most of the Breath of Fire games and Star Wars KotOR. Would Grandia 3 fit my game style perhaps?

SouthJag Mar 6, 2006 05:07 PM

Check the Grandia Appreciation thread for opinions about Grandia 3. ^_^ It's in this same forum.

majario Mar 6, 2006 05:36 PM

This is a great time for RPGs. I'm especially waiting for KHII. The first game was so good that it left me yearning for more. I hope KHII has the same effect on me. I can't till it comes out.

Yeah... I saw that thread after clicking Submit Reply to this post.

Borg1982 Mar 12, 2006 04:32 PM

Help me find an RPG + What are you waiting to come out? + Which series do you follow?

I feel that the last real good RPG was DQ8. I don't see anything particularly awesome coming out in the forseeable future, either. Can anyone recommend a current generation RPG (GC, PS2, XBOX, GBA, DS) that is worth it? I'll be sure to read about it on gamespot.

Plus, what are you waiting to come out in the RPG realm?
I think DQ: Yangus might be coming out.

Finally, which RPG series do you follow "to the end" and why?
I used to follow FF but apparently not to the end. FFX-2 and FF12 may be the first FF's that I'll never own in my life.
I'm a DQ follower for life. I can't get enough.
Finally, Shining Force is a series I love, but sadly it was taken over by Sega, whereas the original company that made them was Camelot.

russ Mar 12, 2006 04:50 PM

Shadow Hearts From the New World just came out last week and it's pretty good thus far, 13 hours in. It's the first RPG that I've played since DQVIII.

Suikoden V is coming out March 21st in the US, which I am looking forward to. I'd say that the Suikoden series is one that I will continue to follow until they release a couple of really bad ones in a row. Even Suikoden IV, which had plenty of flaws, was not a bad game, it had its redeeming qualities. I expect Suikoden V to be at a quality somewhere around that of Suiko II and III, both of which I really enjoyed for various reasons.

So basically go get Shadow Hearts From the New World and then in a couple of weeks go pick up Suikoden V.

Godai Mar 12, 2006 04:53 PM

I'm with russ and Suikoden. It's coming out soon, and it looks great. I enjoyed IV more than most people seem to have, and I loved III. Of course I & II are classics, in the good sense.

Rydia Mar 12, 2006 04:57 PM

I'm planning to get Suikoden V and Kingdom Hearts II when they come out later this month.

I also tend to follow the Final Fantasy series, Grandia, and Suikoden. There are others as well, but if I were to stick with three to follow, those would be my top choices.

Grundlefield Earth Mar 12, 2006 05:08 PM

For the first two questions the obvious is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblvion (March 21st). Going to be the best RPG ever. Plus you wont need another RPG for like a billion years.

The series I follow is the above, Bioware series like Baldurs Gate and KOTOR, Final Fantasy, and Grandia.

Rydia Mar 12, 2006 05:14 PM

Merged Borg's thread with Denicalis' thread about upcoming RPGs.

Golfdish from Hell Mar 12, 2006 09:31 PM

Ones I'm looking forward to (either out already or upcoming):

Rogue Galaxy
Suikoden V (looks incredible and I haven't been excited about a new Suikoden game since part 2. Six-person battles are the way to go.)
Wild Arms 4
Atelier Iris 2 (I really loved the first one)
Disgaea 2
Shadow Hearts 3 (want to look at the interpretation of America in the 1920's and this would be my first time playing the series as well).

And my most anticipated RPG probably ever: Valkyrie Profile 2. More of the greatest battle system ever with more backstory and better graphics from the original. Also: One of my most anticipated soundtracks.

SouthJag Mar 12, 2006 09:48 PM

I think the only other RPG I'm really anxiously awaiting is Rogue Galaxy, if for no other reason than the team developing it -- Level 5. It looks great and hey, if Level 5 says it'll be one of the largest-scale RPGs ever, I believe them.

Peter Mar 13, 2006 04:01 AM

Rogue Galaxy is pretty high on my list, although it worries me that we haven't heard a thing since it Japan release last year. There are of course rumours floating around about a summer release, but I personally have my doubts about it.

My most anticipated games are Shadow Hearts 3, I have it already but I can only play on my PS2 during the weekends, and Suikoden V, since it takes place in one of my most anticipated regions since the first games.

CrimsonSerenade Mar 15, 2006 05:39 AM

Disgaea 2 and Valkyrie Profile 2. I had been anticipating Kingdom Hearts II, but with all the delays (it was scheduled to come out Winter 2004 the first time it was talked about), it sort of fell off.

With sequels coming out to my two favorite RPGs of all time, I'm definetly waiting to see these come out. Disgaea had a massive amount of gameplay to it, a game that I've dedicated over 300 hours to, and Valkyrie Profile, a game with a battle system I couldn't put down and a great concept storywise. I can't wait for these 2 games to come out.

Kesubei Mar 20, 2006 02:41 AM

Phantasy Star Universe. This is the only RPG I want right now. It was supposed to be released on March 30th in JPN, but now it's release date is "2006". :( COME ON SONIC TEAM.

ZeroSlash Mar 20, 2006 10:32 PM

I'm really looking forward to Atlus's upcoming RPG releases, mainly Yggdra Union. I loved Riveria a good deal and knowing that YU is made by Sting really had me looking forward to it. Metal Saga looks interesting if it's as open ended as advertised which I look foreward to after playing both DDS games. They were good, but to linear for my taste. Super Robot Taisen Original Generations looks to be a nice SRPG for the mech lover that I am.

No. Hard Pass. Apr 20, 2006 07:37 PM

WHERE IS MY CHILDREN OF MANA, SQUARE ENIX? (Actually, I hear it's more LoM than SoM, so I don't care) I also hear the new Seiken will have little in common with SoM. "We made one of the greatest games ever, now let's actively ignore it!"

Thanks guys. Thanks a bunch.

SouthJag Apr 30, 2006 01:13 AM

Well now that Rogue Galaxy and Tales of the Abyss have both been confirmed for a U.S. launch, I'm primarily looking forward to both of their releases this year above all other console RPGs. There's also Xenosaga 3 to consider.

As far as the PC goes, like many others I'm awaiting the arrival of the World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade expansion. For the handhelds, the Xenosaga I & II release for the DS will finally convince me to purchase the system, and then Landstalker, Crisis Core, Blade Dancer, (potentially) Legend of Heroes II and of course Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth are all lining themselves up for my PSP.

Hot damn, what a good year this'll be, providing all of these get released in 2006.

Summonmaster Apr 30, 2006 08:59 PM

I reiterate Disgaea 2 and both upcoming VPs...two of the sexiest rpgs ever having follow-ups are no-brainers.

This is a LONG way from now, but considering my unhealthy love for Wild Arms 3 and Wild Arms 4, I am positively ecstatic about the eventual Wild Arms 5.

Omega Weapon May 14, 2006 10:13 AM

Front Mission 5 - can't wait for some more wanzer action to go with its excellent soundtrack.

Final Fantasy XII - The demo was too much fun so I'm greatly anticipating this game.

Tales of Legendia - as long as it doesn't get trapped like Symphonia did right after Disc 2 started I should be enjoying this game a lot. I'm pretty sure I know the idiot who wrote recursion into that game's stages at Wallachia but the new recursion-destroyer program one of my friends wrote should fix that game pretty easily.

Nintendonomicon May 14, 2006 02:54 PM

Final Fantasy III for the screen that is dual.
'nuff said.

Also, Dragon Quest Swords: Needlessly Long Subtitle for Wii. I've never played a Dragon Quest game, so I'm looking forward to this one bigtime.

Zeta26 May 15, 2006 02:25 AM

Especially with that pointer controller. The possibilities are just endless :D. Like from attacking normally or performing spells.
