The Grandia Appreciation Thread!
Hear ye, hear ye! Grandia 3 is here! It's about time, too.
The Grandia series, to me, is that of a phenomenal one. Their RPG landmark has always been the battle system, and it shines in Grandia 3 as much as it has in the past games. Show your love for Grandia and all of its characters! Oh and uh, make some relevant discussion too. >__>; Has anyone picked up Grandia 3 yet? If you haven't, and you're a fan of the previous Grandia games, you should buy this. Graphically, it's amazing. Two discs contain really attractive and distant landscapes, beautiful cities, but the best part is the flying. Yes, flying. You acquire your airplane fairly early on in the game, and it stays with you (supposedly) throughout the rest of the story. Flying is perhaps the coolest thing in this game next to the battles. As with most RPGs, flying tends to be fairly limited, but not in this one. It feels a lot more open. If you fly in areas with good reception, you can pick up on some really funny radio conversations. If you fly near scenic areas, you can get a zoomed in view of them and a brief description. But if you're REALLY daring, pull back on that analog stick and forego the world beneath you -- you can fly above the clouds! That's one of the truly amazing parts about flying in this game. It might not sound like much, but that minor addition to the game really makes for an awesome experience. Plus, there's a flying whale. You have to see it for yourself. If you're familiar with the battle system of Grandia, you'll feel right at home. The biggest addition is the Aerial Combo/Finish. In the previous games, Cancel attacks (and Criticals) knocked the opponent down, but in this game it's an upward strike. So let's say that Character A cancels (the attack has to actually cancel -- just using a non-cancelling Critical won't work) Monster A's attack. If Character B attacks that same monster with a regular Combo attack, Character B will launch into an Aerial Combo and if enough damage is done, an Aerial Finish will occur which results in more Gold and often an item. Another really cool thing is, if you can get your timing down right, you can have multiple characters participate in the Aerial Combo. That's right -- if one person can cancel the attack, the remaining 3 all have an opportunity to do an Aerial Combo if you told them all to target the same enemy with Combo attacks! It makes for an impressive string of attacks. Mana Egg fusion from Grandia Xtreme is back and arguably better than before. It was more like mana egg CONfusion in Grandia Xtreme [/pun]. You can also extract magic from the mana eggs and spell books you find as well. There's honestly not too many downsides to this game. The only real negative I've seen is that two of your near-starting four characters leave the party -- for good. And it seems like it'll happen again. It's an old RPG tactic used by the likes of Lunar, among others. Get a party member, then according to the story they leave. But it's not such a bad thing -- when they leave, at least their portion of the story is wrapped up. Overall, this is definitely worth a buy. It's an enjoyable RPG among the several that have been released recently. But this thread isn't just about Grandia 3. It's time to show your appreciation for the games that have raised Grandia to what it is today. |
First off, i never expected to buy this. i happened to see a review of it online and took a chance buying it.
However, what a smile this game brings to my face. this is the 1st game in a while that i look forward to playing when i get home from work. like the previous grandias, the battle system is freakin sweet. i love the combos you can get, although they do get a little bland after a while. fusing mana eggs? brillant idea. i've made some killer ones and then extracted the powerful magic from them. The music is ok. the pop tune in the beginning surprised me. that came out of nowhere. The story is a little weak, but the battle system makes up for it and the graphics are MUCH IMPROVED from grandia 2. the only downside perhaps to this game is the question of being able to replay it after you beat it. Unlike FFX, which i've replayed a couple of times b/c of the sidequests, i'm not sure if grandia 3 is that type of game. That being said, a definite must for any rpg lover. it's well worth the money b/c it's really fun. |
I loved Grandia II alot and I picked up at the budget price of $20 a long time ago. I was pretty close to beating it, but I traded in before fully beating the partner Ryudo's Hometown because I was stupid. I felt really good looking at the faqs and boards and being like the only one who found the Eyes of Valmar to be easy to beat. One of the most fun parts about the game was the battle system for sure. It was so easy to level up because the battle moved in real time, freezing when wanted to make your decision. You also had to take into account your character's actual position relative to the enemies when evading/cancelling and such which I still respect very much. Very innovative. The magic attacks were lots of fun utilizing separate cutscenes. Howl is still my favourite spell though.
My friend showed me Grandia III the other day and I was glad to see i was more of the same with a gigantic graphics upgrade. I couldn't stop watching him play too, all the way from picking up Alfina from an inn to the 3rd area of Dragon Valley. I will pick this up one day when I hve the money again. How was the original Grandia? Is it similiar to the latest two incarnations? |

The Grandia series is incredible. I would love to get Grandia III when I can. The battle is great right??
|
How is Grandia 1? Rate the music, storyline, and gameplay if you could.

I agree with everything Southjag said, pretty much.
I love Grandia, love it so much I went out and ordered the soundtrack shortly after I got 3, and both the game and music are fantastic. The only downside- as has been stated before- is that the plot goes downhill in the second disc, or so I hear. I'm only 17 hours in, and the game has been quite the experience so far. The characters are all likable, the battle system is back and better than ever, and the game remains very engaging. I have a hard time making myself stop each time I pick it up. I get a kick out of using the AI Strategy functions and let them run battles every once in a while. If you equip your characters right they'll get "Excellent" on even the really tough ones, I'm impressed. There's still a lot of different strategies to explore, both Special/Magic wise with the characters I have, so I doubt I'll be bored with the battle system at any point during my gameplay. Oh, and I love Ulf. I love Ulf a lot. <333333333 Yuki + Flash + Aerial Combo = AMAZING. |

You mean the battle system? it's easily the best out of the three. like i said earlier, the combos are a great addition. |
Ahahaha, I love this game more and more each time I play it.
I'm at Baccula right now, and foolishly tried to take on the Desert Lord. Got him down to about 9,000HP before I couldn't hold my own against him without taking heavy losses, so I had to bail. Went back into town for a rest at the inn and the conversation scene is hilarious. Ulf and Alfina going back and forth about what animals you can and can't eat. It really lets you see a lot about the characters personalities, these little chats that happen. Ulf is still fantasic. <3 |
Quote:
without giving out too much info, you do return to the desert later in the game. that's when you'll have a much better chance against the desert lord. the guy is wicked fast though, so be careful! |
Ugh, lucky Americans. There still hasn't been a word about a European release, and I have the bad feeling that we won't be seeing one. I'd download it, but 7 gigs would rape what little bandwith I have left. Anyone know how long the game is, btw? I found Grandia II to be disappointingly short.
|
One thing I have always loved about this series has been the multitude of mana eggs you can find and equip on your characters to customize them any way you see fit. Grandia II furthered this and I have Grandia III but have not played it yet, but I hope mana eggs continue to be a great asset in this game. Grandia III could be one of SE's best RPGs in a long time.
|
I like Grandia III is better than Grandia II,battle play is great is like realtime play RPGnot there time to stop is same FF-X2. but there alot cutscenes on the game,it remember me like Xenosaga.but overall is game is great will better than FFXII.

I did fuse some Mana eggs and got some pretty neat super spells, but I've yet to extract the Astrea Zap one. The guy was really just too fast and his Quake spell nearly wipes out my entire party. I knew what I was up against going into it though, I just wanted to see how long I'd last. I'll try at a later point in the game. |
I do actually consider the original Grandia to be an all time favorite of mine and a likely top ten choice. Grandia II I played for a while and wasn't particularly fond of. I haven't played any of the others. It's hard to find Xtreme and I'm not sure if I should bother with Grandia III since I've heard from a number of people that it's average or worse. You seem to like it though so maybe I'll check it out. It sounds like it does more to capture the spirit of adventure like the first game did.
|
Well, I for one got hooked on Grandia with the second game being my first. I then played Xtreme and after a good bit of searching, found an excellent copy of the first Grandia. I played it an enjoyed it, but Grandia II will always hold a little more meaning for me.
Anyway, Grandia 3 is superb. Of the reviews I've read, the primary problems seems to be the lack of secondary character development. I both agree and disagree with it. Sure, Miranda and Alonso do leave your party rather quickly, but their story ends well and appropriately -- I didn't feel any lack of closure regarding those two. I feel the same about some of th NPCs you meet, namely Captain Schmidt. You get more than enough backstory on him, and then you meet him and voila, he's done with. I think some of the reviewers make these characters far greater than what they're meant to be to the story. If you enjoyed the first Grandia, I think you'd get a kick out of Grandia III, Megavolt. |
Thanks for the info. I'll try it out sometime then. I feel now that I should give Grandia II another chance too. Maybe I didn't play long enough into it to get hooked. I remember putting it down after arriving at some beat up town or something. Hopefully I don't need to play the Dreamcast version to enjoy it more.

I want to know:
-how I learn new secret method for special more? -how to learn new special more for all characters? |
The secret methods for the moves are generation randomly I believe -- the more you use that particular technique, the better your chances of mastering it are. As far as I can tell, there's no indication as to which technique is about to level up.
Learning special moves is a bit less random. There are three areas your character can increase in -- Magic, Skill, and Special. You gain an extra slot for the former two, but for the latter you gain both an additional SP bar and, depending on what level for which character, the chance to learn a new move. For example, Yuki learns Dragon Slash at Special Level 9. So when you see him hit Special Level 9, regularly use Combo attacks. The Special reveals itself in the place of your regular combo. |
hmmm, are both need to luck to get new secret method & special moves.thanks anyway
|
I wish Game Arts would put as much effort into new Grandia games as they did the first... that had a lot of replay value... the only problem with Grandia 2, Grandia X-treme, and Gradnia 3 is that they have little replay value.
|
that's true in the case of Xtreme. my god, what a bad game! i'll probably replay Grandia 3 after i beat it. i can see some of the replay value in it. like the casino for instance. i'd love to get the top skill book there! currently, i have ~180k medals. at most i had ~365,000. with that amount i bought 2 ninja slippers. the skill book is at 999,999 medals.
|
I havent played III yet, I heard the story lacks alot but the combat is awesome.
Grandia I was the same way, I did not like the characters...even the antagonist was annoying to me. The combat was brilliant though...and it was different from the average turn based combat game. Grandia II was even sweeter, since I did kind of enjoy the characters more. The main character Ryodo is and was one of my all time favorite rpg characters. The story wasnt bad, but the combat made up for it in the long run. Grandia Xtreme disappointed me, it was a bad game...plus it lead you to believe that there would be xtreme mountain biking, snowboarding and mountain dew drinkage. Sadly this was all left out. Why wasnt this just called Grandia III? |
Grandia Xtreme is more like a second-cousin of Grandia than an actual sibling sequel. It lacked a detailed story and was much more of a dungeon crawler than the previous (and future) installments. At its core, it was nothing more than a game orbiting around the battle system, instead of the other way around.
You really should play Grandia 3 though Knighthawk. If you read my first post, you'll see what I have to say about the story. |
AWESOME. Melc Ruins. OMG.
So, what level did you all wait until/were you at when you went there? Regarding the Melc Ruins entrance boss:
If the rest of the bosses are on this sort of level I shouldn't have a problem finishing the game in the next day or so. EDIT: FEEL THE BITE OF MY BLADE:
|
Aww fuck. I'm around level 32-34 and that guardian beat my ass into the ground. I need to do some levelling up I suppose. Yawn.
|

Go fight the Dessert Lord a couple of times. The extra s is because he should be a complete pushover at that point. 4000EXP every time, can't even beat that. |
Quote:
Wait till you face the lucky mink!!! 15,000 exp..... that is if you can beat him!! good luck. that bastard is one tough cookie! (i'm near the end of the game). |
Me too,I can't beat it.my is level 35
|
just beat the game yesterday. 60+ hours and my characters were levels 55+.
the last battle was long and it took me more than once to beat him. here's a hint, have 1 character solely as SUPPORT and do NOT underestimate the final boss. |
Hmm 1st DVD finished in 15 hours and you say that game last 60 hours so 2nd one is 30 hours longer then the first one...? Insane xD Well I'm at the Flying Castle and I have 25+ hours of game play with level 35.
|
The game will normally take 30-35 hours. i spent many hours leveling up, fusing mana eggs, extracting skills, and getting my INI stat up. that's one of the most important stats for a character in the game.
|
Tell me about it. INI (starting position on the command wheel) gives you a huge advantage. I've got a skill equipped on Ulf to where he gets a big starting advantage -- even when I get surprised, he usually ends up attacking first. It's great to because with Force Wave as high as I've gotten it (Level 4) it usually kills quite a few enemies since they surround me. Whatever it doesn't kill it does enough IP damage to allow the rest of my team to catch up.
|
Hey guys, I just got Grandia II for PC, which means I'm going through the game again (I've already beaten it, but hey its still a fun game). One question that googling didn't seem to help on:
I can't get the L/R Shoulder buttons to work in the menu. They only worked when I was messign around and decided to try the tutorial (One to refresh my mind on the mechanics of the game, and two to check and see if the buttons would work), which of course they DID work then... Anyone have a solution? Should I try a gamepad when I get home? A nice thing about having the PC Version, is that now I've extracted some of the cool sound effects ^_^ |
INI also determines how fast your character will move on the IP gauge. In other words your turn speed is determined by this stat, including how fast you go on the ACT gauge. MOV so not to be assumed to deal with IP speed, deals with how fast your character wiill get from point A(where you are on the field) to point B(the location of your target).

I am close to the end of the game now with 46 hours in. Though I made it to Final Dungeon:
My thoughts on Emelious are this: Spoiler:
|
Personally, I loved Grandia the best. It had the most story to it, and was very involved in terms of gameplay. Plus, even if they were few and very annoying, it had sidequests you could do. And I definitely spent some time getting that End of Time move for Feena. I really liked the array of characters, although it is annoying to level up moves for a character who leaves and get only 1/3 of the experience points back.
Grandia II was pretty cool, as well. I enjoyed the story well enough, but once in a while, it seemed like way too much fighting and not enough story. The characters were pretty cool for the most part. I primarily thought it was a shame Skye didn't talk nearly enough after you started collecting party members. The Elena-Millenia thing was a nice (though not unexpected) twist. Grandia III was definitely excellent quality in graphics, as you all said. The story was pretty weak, though enjoyable. It didn't have enough twists, and it was much too linear, I thought. I did enjoy the battle system with the extra combos and aerial combos, but I definitely wish the special moves were easier to level up than "get lucky." Even taking a lot of effort and doing a move 100 times seems easier than "get lucky" just because I'd rather know how close I am. I never played Grandia Xtreme because I understand it to be dungeon-based, and I'm not wild about those types. I love to have a story with my games. All in all, I love the Grandia series. And Noriyuki Iwadare composes some incredibly catchy music for every game (as well as a few clunkers). I am so in love with the main theme of Grandia. And the fight music always rocks. |
Glad there are folks who liked Grandia over Grandia II. While I did play Grandia II first, I realised it was a carbon copy of the original Grandia after I finished it. Not to say Grandia II was a bad game, it was good, but only because of the addictive battle system and Millenia!
Anyway, I was kinda sadden that Game Arts didn't come up with a good storyline and character development in Grandia III (based on the reviews I've read), as was in the original game (it had so much charm). But I'll be getting it regardless because of the battle system. It's pure crack. |
Game Arts needs to create a Grandia as a good as the 1st... I did play through X-treme... so I expect Grandia IIIs bosses to be complete push overs in comparison to the crap I've fought in X... haha
|
I don't know about that. Grandia III has some challenging bosses. Especially -
Spoiler:
Ok I've just read your post again. Granted I have not fought enough bosses in Xtreme(that is one god aweful boring game) - still, III has some sick sick fights. Quote:

Correction about Grandia Xtreme -- there are two towns you have access to, and a third one appears but I think you only visit there once. But as far as necessity goes, you only need to visit one town for supplies.

I finally made it to the final battle in Grandia 3...

Edit: Oh yeah, and I love the ending too. It was a real nostalgia rush! Spoiler:
I cried, needless to say. |
I played Grandia III till the start of disk 2 and suddenly... I lost interest. The game had NOTHING up for me that forced me to continue playing, really absolutely nothing. The soundtrack got worse with every area I visited (except Baccura - HUGE step down in the musical department).
The characters, while being nicely designed, turned out to be one of the most bland cast I ever saw. It is really a pity that the most interesting and charismatic ones leave your party before you know it. The character development is almost zero, the story is extremely generic and boring, the music is sub-par most of the time (I only really liked the first battle theme and a few boss themes) and since it's so goddamn linear - sporting no sidequests - I simply lost interest in this one. Well, the game does have good aspects - the voice acting, which was extremely well done, for example - or the battle system, which was very fun until the point the enemies got really annoying, stretching the length of the battles (and probably the game itself as well) to about the double amount of what it could've been normally. The graphics are done really well, the environments are truly nice to explore, but else the game had nothing for me that I really liked. I am so disappointed with this game. It started out really promising, I couldn't stop playing it first, I LOVED this game. But everything simply fell apart halfway through disk 1 and finally, disk 2 started really boring and uninteresting. In my eyes - and this is my humble opinion - it is the single worst Grandia ever made. I had even more fun playing Xtreme, which motivated me to continue playing at least a little. (Even though I hated most of its characters for their gross designs...) If another Grandia ever gets released, I will really consider not buying it, since there's nothing left that made the series so good and catchy for me. I thoroughly hope that GameArts works more on the story and character development next time, 'cause I really don't care that much about graphics. Maybe I'll be able to put it into my PS2 again someday... but I really don't care. |
I found two you're talking about to be EXTREMELY ANNOYING and I was happy they left the game for good. I don't know why people lost interest in disc 2..I thought disc 1 was horrible. All I have to tell you is try to make it to Melc Ruins. The game makes a big drastic change in difficulty and story from there. The last boss though was a push over and there's some enemies that are 10x harder than it. Alfina is the biggest cry baby in RPG history and I couldn't stand none of her voice over scenes. I admit though, the story has been done before, and basically it's a copy of the second game, but this time, there's no Granas and Valmar. Just guardians.
Southjag - Spoiler:
|
Well, I guess the lack of interest actually made me stop since nothing good happened for so long.
Oh, and Spoiler:
As soon as the first one mentioned left, the comical value of the game hit zero. =/ |
Now I do have to agree with you on that one. The ones remaining have no sense of humor. Yuki(who is already a suck ass character to begin with) doesn't have someone to mock him 24/7.

Grandia
Grandia I
** ** ** ** ** (10/10) Grandia II ** ** ** ** (8/10) Grandia III ** ** ** * (7/10) My opinion that is.. I'm just hoping they can come up with something as good as the first one. And I really dislike how they change the combat system all the time. I think Grandia(1) had the best combat system ever, dont see why they had to change it.. I was a little excited though when I saw the big golems, which looked a lot like something from the first game.. :) |
Well IMO and from what I have read most people like 3 battle system the most. So I guess they did a good job on perfecting it.
|
well the system really don,t change much, they just improved it and really they did a good job with it, because yeah the battle system in Grandia III is the best! (one of the best rpg battle system I think) the system is fun, you never get bored with it, lot of action and can still give you some strategy.
just too bad the story doesn't follow with the great battle system and the nice graphic :\ |
While I loved the music in all 3 games think of the battle system from 3, the story of 1, and the music of 2! Thats one badass game we got there.
|
I was gonna fight the last boss when my computer messed up....thus I never managed to complete Grandia II. The storyline was alright, neat battle system but unfortunately I never got around finishing it. Maybe I'll start up again someday.
Just completed Grandia III last week. I gotta agree there's nothing much with the storyline, sometimes I feel like I'm playing just for the sake of completing it (I hate playing games and leaving them hanging). A pretty cheesy storyline plus Alfina jamming my nerves a couple of times, I think the only thing that saved it was the battle system and the music. Now I'm on the Shadow Hearts: Covenant. That game is pretty neat though I wished I played the first one. |
Grandia II has the most badass main character I've ever controlled. Ryudo simply rocks the house.
Elena: You cold unfeeling..BRUTE! Ryudo: Geohand. Cold, unfeeling Geohound. Ryudo: Just be sure to change his litter twice a day. Ryudo: Cut the waterworks kid, there is a tooth fairy. And my most favorite line of all.. Ryudo: I'm sorry but were you waiting for me to give a damn? !!! XD III isn't a great as I had hoped(SE so yea..). What made it addicting though was the rare items you can find. I still need to get Spirit Staff to complete Alfina. |
Be glad that you can't finish Grandia II, because that game had one of the latest final bosses in any RPG that I've played. The ending itself was also pretty disappointing, especially compared to the awesomeness that was Grandia I (you just have to love Leen).
I haven't played Grandia III, and since a European release is unlikely, I probably won't, if only the torrent wasn't such a huge ass file. |
Quite frankly, Grandia II is one of my favorite games that I have ever played. Every game has its weakpoints, of course but even still it was a great time. It had incredible character development and the battle system was indeed very very fun. It just felt like the game should never end, and even after it did I have replayed it multiple times. The soundtrack was excellent, I thought. The only track that I didn't really come to love was the "You were surprised!" battle theme. Every other piece I came to really admire; Iwadare really did an excellent job of setting the moods of places with the music.
Keep in mind, I am the kind of guy who trained all the characters to level 52 for the Melfice battle, just so I could beat him without getting hit. Lol :-) There were a few very depressing things about Grandia II. I must admit, the final boss was indeed the most depressing boss in the whole game, if not the most depressing boss that I have ever fought in my life. Also (in comparison to Grandia Xtreme) the magic was very VERY overpowered; you didn't really have to do quite so much work to get really good magic, as well as having all those skills. I could get my characters to cast things like Zap! and Burnflame instantly. Grandia III however, the magic was better than both II and Xtreme. I thought it was just right in the balance department. I have never played Grandia I, although many people tell me that it is better than Grandia II, which I find hard to believe. I own the game and I have tried to sit through the painstaking graphics, and I just couldn't do it. I get to like the first field and I am just like UGHHHHHHhhhhh....... I couldn't do it. Maybe someday I will be able to when I'm bored enough. Grandia Xtreme was.......eh. It is indeed very dungeon-based, which I kind of like and kind of don't. I don't really remember much of the storyline, which goes to say that it wasn't very good, because if ANYONE asked me the storyline of Grandia II, I could pretty much recite it perfectly for them. The soundtracks, I don't really remember very much of them. The only two that are "worthy" of my remembrance are the battle theme, and the Zenothlee battle theme. Those two are great pieces of work. I sort of like how in Grandia Xtreme, you can go back into the dungeon with JUST Evann and kill things by yourself. My brother and I are certainly the "training" types of guys, so our Evann is now like level 170 and we can beat Zenothlee over and over without getting hit. Yes I must admit, Grandia III was quite a letdown. It frustrated me that I couldn't really improve their INI stat, and they were always a LOT (not just a little, friends) slower than everyone else as far as "ACT" is concerned, which isn't actually a stat, which also depressed me. Yes, the soundtrack for the Baccula settlement was something worth killing yourself over. Every time I went through the town I just muted the TV :p The final boss was........a pointlessly long battle. I would rather have had something that had a moderate amount of HP that could actually rape you, rather than a boss who is a "pushover" exept for the fact that he takes 40 minutes to kill. Also he could have looked cooler. =( The storyline is rather disappointing as well. There were a lot of loose ends that they just kind of left without explanation. Like, whatever happened to Miranda and Alonso after Yuki and Alfina left? We never even saw them again. I was expecting some kind of further development on them. Also, what was up with Dahna's sister and her reign over the Baccula settlement? It was just like "I built a mall. Deal with it." Well gee, thanks. They could have done better jobs with these things, and made the ending of the game more conclusive. All in all, I still liked the game(s). The Grandia series are certainly an incredible bunch. Yes, they could have done better jobs in some places of all the games, but that is so with all games. If they do come out with a Grandia IV at some point, that will probably be the only reason I buy a PS3. Sorry the post got kind of long... xD |
