Magi Mar 3, 2006 08:55 PM

Hey Vemp, I have been meaning to ask...

Are you doing this on your own, or you are you actually taking courses in arts somewhere? Are you planning on using comic book character as part of your portfolio? How far are you planning on taking your art? I am assuming that you are going to do this professionally.

nazpyro Mar 3, 2006 09:54 PM

Oh, sweet. It's vemp's art thread again. I see you dropped "pyre" from your name. Anyway, it's nice to see your art again. You're very good at drawing boobies.

Vemp Mar 3, 2006 10:52 PM

magi, I'm not taking up any classes and never had (but if given the chance, I would love to have formal education on Arts). So far, I'm doing this as a hobby, and at the same time improving my skills for I want to pursue a professional career in comics someday. I still have a lot of things to improve, specially sequential art. But so far, it's just a hobby. :)

naz, nice to see you too! hehe :p

guyinrubbersuit Mar 3, 2006 11:23 PM

I like your style has a Frank Miller/Joe Maderia vibe to it. Who are some of your influences?

Vemp Mar 4, 2006 10:58 AM

rubbersuitguy, I have no specific influence, it kind of varies depending on what mood I'm in, or what book I'm reading. But I'm a huge fan of Adam Hughes and Mike Mignola's art. Right now, I'm into Olivier Coipel and Steve McNiven. Mostly marvel artists.

Shenlon Mar 4, 2006 02:26 PM

All of that art just looks great. It looks like a comic book illustartion. I wouldn't be surprised if you've worked on your own comic strips.
I would like to see what you can do with color but other than that all your work is a real eye catcher.

Acro-nym Mar 4, 2006 02:32 PM

Do you want to know why those are good? It's because they clearly show variety. Too many comic book artists these days get bogged down in just one art style, one way to represent characters, sometimes to the point where some characters start looking the same. With a shift in style, duplicate people would become almost impossible, unless that is really what the artist is going for. Good job... now if I could find an artist...

ava lilly Mar 5, 2006 11:48 AM

I admire people who can actually draw comic style people nicely. it's such a neat style.

I think my favourite is the second last one. she reminds me of Wonder Woman or something like that.

The reason she reminds you of Wonder Woman is becuase that is who is in the drawing. And you're right; that is a good drawing.

DCII764II00 Mar 5, 2006 05:05 PM

Gotta say, love your comic feel... It's like a throwback to when I used to read comics none stop.. great job.

As a hobby eh?.. Ever notice how people who do stuff like this as a hobby are very passionate about their work.. and you can literally see it on the page..?
Great job I really like your work keep at it and I hope to see more later on!

whoa! ava lilly replied to my thread.

Holy shit, I never got this much replies since my last "BEEN HERE FOR X YEARS NOW" thread! Thanks for the comments guys, I'll try posting some more stuff later, and I encourage everyone to make constructive comments, not just "nice art" comments. I really want to know what are my flaws and what I need to improve. Once, again, thanks!

Considering just how good you are, we think you have a lot to offer on that front also. You seem to be fairly confident in drawing super hero character (particularly females. >.>) Maybe its time you start to deviating in terms of your subjects? For example, draw some "stuff" other then characters, cars, your living room, etc.

Jessykins Mar 6, 2006 05:56 AM

Vempykins...

You never did do my Rue!

Vemp Mar 7, 2006 01:31 AM

sorry Jess... I promise I'll do it. I just need to find the right mood of the drawing or something. :/

coeccias Mar 7, 2006 01:48 AM

From what you've displayed, it looks like you could have a great career as a cover artist. How are you with backgrounds?

Aya Mar 7, 2006 05:58 AM

I'm naked and exposed! D:!!!

you silly good ;-; you need to draw me with clothes!

sup Rorschach.

Magi Mar 15, 2006 03:39 PM

Somehow uncharacteristic, but its funny. I enjoyed it. :b Hey, have you ever thought that in certain comic, that the black and white version worked better then the color version? Even in some of the recent ones, when it is fully colored, the line art lost some of its impect.

Vida Eterna Mar 15, 2006 05:41 PM

Hey nice stuff man, I particularily enjoyed the mistletoe one, cos that's the kind of twisted guy I am haha. Your figure drawing and foreshortening skills are pretty good man, keep posting!

Vemp Mar 17, 2006 12:00 AM

heh magi, I exactly know what you mean, you tried and read the last 2 issues of X-Men (#182 - #183). That's a concrete example of what you just said. The colors messed up everything.

Chibi Neko Mar 19, 2006 10:06 PM

Yay! I love your art! on average, how long does it take you to draw one or these pics?

Vemp Mar 20, 2006 12:08 AM

Hey thanks. On average, they usually take an hour or two. Longer if I get lazy. Heh.

nazpyro Mar 21, 2006 12:34 AM

Something's wrong with that last picture, i.e. where are the boobs? vemp, I'm disappointed.

Vemp Mar 21, 2006 11:58 AM

lol sorry for the lack of boobs. I'm kinda doing some tweaking with my art. don't worry, I'll draw some boobs for ya soon!

Shenlon Mar 22, 2006 12:26 PM

Is that second one hellboy?
Looks great, you said it takes you about an hour or two to draw them right. It takes me that long trying to figure out what I want to draw. Usually turns out to be a blank sheet ^_^
Anyway, keep it up I hope to see more

Vemp Mar 23, 2006 08:28 AM

yeah, he's hellboy. spread the hellboy love!

nazpyro Mar 23, 2006 05:30 PM

Hellboy, eh... I guess I'll have to stay aroused by Hellboy's boobs for now as I await patiently for vemp's perfect side boob.

Vemp Apr 4, 2006 11:25 AM

Shenlon Apr 4, 2006 12:07 PM

I'm flying lol ^_^
I think your style is great I would practice it if I had the time.
Can't wait to see more.

Magi Apr 4, 2006 06:03 PM

I think you need to talk more about the stuff that you are doing, and you should be able to. This would help promote discussion, at least, to the otherwise stale Creator’s Café.

It is very, very nicely done, as usual. Some of the rougher edges of the earlier pieces aren’t present here anymore, which is nice. Have I said that you should start drawing your own comic? Yes? DO IT!

The foreshortening is a difficult although interesting problem. I think her right leg and shin should show. I am not sure what you want to do with her fist though, her left fist in particular. I think a clutched fist might work well.

Back to the foreshortening, the chest looks bulky compare to the torso and the (Is it just me or your girls all have big breast but small butts? O.o) hips, this feel like dynamic angle here with that leg. If you could stack the torso and chest, you could heighten the optical illusion to make the pose more dynamic.

Vemp Apr 5, 2006 09:16 AM

Oh yeah, this drawing drove me nuts, and then I finally gave up and "finished" it.

Here's some of the problems that I was trying to solve. First, the right fist, it should have had an outward look, the fist should have been 3/4 outward and not sideways like how it came out. Second, the left fist, the arms are stretched to the back and the fingers should have been spread, which also should have been highlighted! Third, the right foot. Probably the part where I spent the longest time. As you've said earlier, foreshortening. Yeah, I had a VERY difficult time doing this. Draw, erase, draw, erase, draw erase, until the paper's thin as fuck until I just settled with having the right foot showing, as compared with having the shin and the foot. Fourth, left leg. Her lower leg should be showing. And lastly, the torso. Truth is, I still find it difficult to draw a full body pose of a woman. Mainly because I can't get the lower torso part, from below the chest to the legs. And I'm trying to improve that.

Thanks for noticing them magi, it's cool to see someone see your mistakes instead of the regular "OMG NIEC TITS" comment. Also, I can't go into making my own comics yet cause I'm not that confident with my art yet. I guess that could wait. heh.

I love that one. I really seem to enjoy pictures that are done in black and white, but with splashes of red put into the mix as well. it really works with that style to make it more aggressive. the expressions on their faces are pretty nifty too. this whole image looks like it could be cover art for some metal band's CD.

you have a fantabulous graphic style. I enjoy your work muchly~

Confidents comes from experience, you won't gain experience if you never try. Its not like "drawing comic" has to be submitting something to the DC/Marvel and get published. Besides, drawing comic book its about presenting an idea, and has it speak to something of your own identity. It is get across either from your art or the story that you are writing. Even though people usually don't get mega-sellers in their first attempt at something like this, they'll usually learn a lot. I know I do.

http://www.studiomagi.com/doodle/pose2b.jpghttp://www.studiomagi.com/doodle/pose2a.jpg
I tried actually working on the pose today. Although we probably have a different approch to this, but I feel that her right leg doesn't have to stretch back as much as it has now. Do you do thumb nail sketches?

Vemp Apr 5, 2006 10:24 PM

thanks naz and ava, oh and I'm kinda experimenting with that kind of style, heavy blacks and all. :)

magi, sadly I tend to "finish" a thumbnail when I try to make one. This piece is an example of it. It started as a small sketch, like I'm trying to get the pose and all, and I kind of "finished" it. It's just a small sketch, about 4"x4" so it's very small, as for the pose, I think mine's a bit exaggerated. I was trying to put a sense of a "fast" flight (?) like she's going forward in a faster pace or something. And yeah.. I still lack experience. A lot of it.

LET'S LVL UP AT BLOODY FOOTHILLS!

Vemp Apr 13, 2006 10:39 AM

Hi. Here's our busty heroine from JSA, Power Girl.

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/art/th_pg.jpg

I'm practicing drawing full figures. Hence the Ms. Marvel and this drawing. I'm trying to practice everything all at once. Shadows, foreshortening, hands, feet (!), hair, cape, etc. So if you feel you have something to say about how wrong, how this one is supposed to be, what should be done. Please do say it. I would really appreciate it.

Anyways, after this one, I will try to do sequential art using Jessykins' stories.

Magi Apr 13, 2006 11:16 AM

The pose looks awkward. I don't think having it contorted this way looks good. The "curve" is disrupted when you twist the upperbody and lowerbody in different direction like that, it also looks like they should be going at seperate direction. She is certainly top heavy, not just because of her chest, but it doesn't really feel like its foreshortening because the torso and other parts doesn't "stack".

Vemp Apr 13, 2006 11:20 AM

Ok. I didn't actually get that, but I get the idea of the "going at different directions". Ok, thanks, I'll take note of that. Anything else? Don't be shy. :)

Shenlon Apr 13, 2006 02:16 PM

alot of comics have weird poses becuase of the actions the character take so I don't mind poses that are way out there (just look at spider man)
But the left leg look sort of wierd. Other than that I'm glad ur showing a little more color ^_^

Vemp Apr 14, 2006 03:14 AM

Thanks. How weird dude? Like shadows? Too long? blah blah..

Vemp Apr 26, 2006 10:11 AM

This is kind of my start of my style revamp. I feel more comfortable doing this style as compared to the pretty lady big boobs. I felt it was more "copied" rather than an expression of what I want to draw. blah blah blah blah. I like pie.

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/art/th_sentry.jpg

Magi Apr 26, 2006 10:38 AM

I like it. The body construction seem more realistic then a superhero proportion. Even though I feel the shoulder seem to be slump a bit too much. If this is a super hero, his arm would be larger, but that depends on whose convention you are following. You seem to do small lower body for some reason.

Quote:

blah blah blah blah. I like pie.
Do you know why you aren't getting the respect that you deserves?

Vemp Apr 27, 2006 09:46 AM

I know. How 'bout this?

In this drawing, I have incorporated a different approach to my art. As you have observed, my previous artworks are mainly about busty women with 'super-hero' like proportions, the kind of art you can consder as 'pin-up' art or 'cover art'. Instead, I took a different turn on how to express my drawings. I have long been a fan of dark/creepy/serious-themed art, mainly because of how the shadows were done, and how the mood of the story/character oozes from it. And so I tried drawing with this style, influenced mainly by Jae Lee after reading his The Sentry run. And I felt more comfortable with this as compared to my previous style. If you have comments, things you think needs correction, techniques on how to do stuff, please do so. I would really appreciate it. Thank you. This would really help me improve myself, and my art.

Thats more like something that belonged in your first post since it talked about your style.
Your latest super hero is great though. I think your work would be awsome if you colored it as well.

Vemp May 3, 2006 09:25 AM

I mentioned in my journal about a friendy VS-battle competition among the members of a comics club I joined. This happened last sunday, and the mechanics was that the members were paired and each pair were given a theme to draw, and were given an hour to draw in any medium as long as they did not exceed the allotted time. Me and my "opponent" was assigned to "Self-doubt".

Here's mine:

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/art/th_vemp-sd.jpg

and my opponent's piece:

http://xs100.xs.to/xs100/06183/preloaderselfdoubt.jpg

Oh, I cleaned up mine in PS :p. Anyway, that guy is more into digital coloring and animation style. He uses blue pencils for his construction lines, while I just use plain pencils, tighten them and proceed with "inking", I don't even think he inked his piece. Like I said, he's a digital artist. So I was thinking it was a bit mis-matched. And it was a good chance for me to try out my "new" style, heavy blacks and fine lines. I wanted to use finer lines but as of that moment, I only had .5 pens, I wanted to use .3 ones for the finer lines I wanted to add on the faces.

So there. Comments, suggestions, etc, I'll be waiting near the gate after P.E. class.

Magi May 3, 2006 10:05 AM

You guys seem to have a very different approach to this. Yours looks far more finished though, the other guys seem to still be at sketch stages. Is there a time limit? I am not sure if your piece really screams "self-doubt", he just doesn't really look like the type, I guess. Maybe you can make the second expression from the right just a little bit more pronounce?

It’s interesting to see that the other guy actually puts it in some sort of context. The self-doubting guy looks okay, but the girl's anatomy is shaky. Clothing are not conform to the shape of an actual body, it feels like as if he drawn the clothing first, the hip does look like it is not connected to the leg correctly.

Dhsu May 3, 2006 12:42 PM

Man, it's so refreshing to finally see someone do comic book art after seeing so much generic anime/manga stuff on the Internet. The hips do seem a little small, but overall I really like your style. Keep up the good work!

P.S. Your self-doubt piece totally pwns the other guy's.

P.P.S. <3 boobers.

Jessykins May 5, 2006 03:20 PM

VEMP!!! Why must you keep me waiting? You are cruel to torture me like this.

Vemp May 6, 2006 10:38 AM

magi, yeah there's a time limit. 1 hour. so we have to draw the theme in any medium, however we want to draw it, but we should not exceed the time limit. Mine's a bit far from the "self-doubt" theme, but it works.

thanks Dshu!

and jessy, I'm really sorry for the delay :( I'm having on-the-job training (it's like work experience thing) and I haven't got the the chance to sit down and draw some panels. Although I have read your story and I have a basic idea of the plot.. I just don't have the time to do the pages :(. Don't worry, I'm gonna start it this week. So if there would be any new art coming from me, it would be about Rue. I promise.

Jessykins May 7, 2006 03:30 PM

*Shakes fist* You better! Also remind me to get on aim and get in touch with you soon.

Vemp Jun 25, 2006 11:34 AM

GAH! After a month of not drawing anything (curse you summer job-experience thing!), I tried drawing an imaginary creature for my drawing club. Prior to this, I draw an octopus and a werewolf, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to scan them.

So anyway, I just realized I suck at drawing stuff based mainly from imagination. I tried doing different creatures, but I end up failing. Either it turns into some humanoid being, or I open a drawing or image of another creature and "copy" it. Perhaps I'm not that experienced yet to start drawing based on imagination, and I lack originality, which are quite critical if I want to start drawing a sequential story. Anyway, here's the dog thing I drew today. I believe the right arm/paw is pretty fucked up. Too much lines.

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/th_dog.jpg

P.S. I'm currently working on one of Jessy's stsories, but I won't be posting any art until I finish em. Still doing thumbnails on how the panel flows and all. Hi Jessy! :)

Magi Jun 25, 2006 11:55 AM

I actually really like this werewolf/dog (?) thingy. It looks rather convincing. Just because it is drawn from imagination doesn't mean those creatures shouldn't have at least some semblance to some of the real life animals in terms of how they move or body structures. Its all about organizing the thought process, some of the thing that one might think about when designing a certain creatures might be some the practicalities of some of their features, sometimes based on the environment that those creatures lived in, or the circumstances in which the creature is created. Of course, that doesn't mean one must apply those logic (and you can come up with the look, and reverse engineer the logic too), its just that it would be easier to organize your thought and find references.

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Since I wanted to create something that can actually move or act in the real world with it's given body structure. I kind of hate how other people make creatures without thinking if what they're doing will "work". Something like that.

(my english is terrible tonight)

Don't worry I'll work on your Rue when I have some free time. Since I'm trying to join this group but they want me to submit a sample of sequential art. So I'm using your story. :)

No such thing. You don't draw just because you don't feel like it. Otherwise you draw on the fly if you have to. Hold that thought, how about "improperly done" ones? like sketch, doodles and drawing done from life? Those could be very interesting to see also, even though it is meant to be thrown away after a time.

Besides the tissue paper art thingy, I haven't seem you done much studies.

Seris Jul 21, 2006 12:10 PM

But studies are boring, Magi. And when you're bored and drawing, it shows in your work.

Vemp Jul 21, 2006 05:27 PM

yeah, and when I say "properly", I kind ofrefer to art that I can include in my portfolio. There's this local group of artists who conduct exhibits and all, they are more into digital rendered art. A few of my friends are part of the group, they are asking me to submit a portfolio so it can be screened. And I don't have a "proper" portfolio :(

But magi has a point.

Magi Jul 21, 2006 06:07 PM

Wow, you are joining a art associate? That's kinda exciting, actually. :3 This could be your springboard to opportunity in the industry sometimes, I thought it could be a tight fit for you guys. Are you guys doing publication also or simply exhibitions?

Vemp Jul 22, 2006 08:50 AM

For now, they're doing exhibits only. The publication/comics thing is still under plans, it's a bit difficult, budget and all. But I want to join this group, at least I can get some exposure. But with the amount of schoolwork I'm doing, it would probably take some time before I can make a presentable portfolio.

Jessykins Jul 23, 2006 06:45 AM

You WOULD side with Captain America. Bah!

Vemp Jul 30, 2006 10:28 AM

In the past few weeks, I haven't really got the time or the motivation to draw. Maybe because of a lot of school work and stuff. So to change that, I have decided that I return to my old habit of drawing something, anything, every night. So that my skills won't degrade and it's also a way to sqeeze those creative juices stuck in my head. I've promised people that I will be doing some art for them, and I really apoligize that until now I haven't finished or even started doing it. Sorry Jessy :(

Yeah, but still, an hour or 2 from my schedule won't do harm. I think my main problem is the motivation or inspiration to draw something. Unlike other people who are either forced, or have to draw everyday because they have to, or it's what they actually do (art school, work, etc.) But I'll try my best to get back into drawing, it's such a waste if I don't.

Actually, it's the same thing that happened 5-6 years ago. I got into college and I stopped drawing, which "reset" my skills. So now, I'm trying to make up for the lost time and opportunity to improve my art.

Magi Jul 30, 2006 10:51 AM

Are you often very tired when you are in your off time?

Vemp Jul 30, 2006 11:03 AM

A bit. You know the feeling of being "drained", or you just want to sit down and relax. It's like that. I find it hard to draw in that state since when I draw, I kind of get myself into it. I sometimes imagine stories while I draw, it's like a totally different thing. Or maybe it's just me.

Jessykins Jul 31, 2006 04:34 AM

I know what you mean about the way you have to sort of force yourself to draw. Because you really don't feel as though you're compelled to in some way. I mean, not like you get paid for it or it's for a grade. I go through the same shit with my writing.

And don't worry about it. I'm a patient woman! (Also read my new story)

Also, forgot to add that that's a great looking Shulkie. Yay for everybody's favorite hot, green slut.

Vemp Aug 3, 2006 10:59 PM

This is for Jessy.

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/art/th_knife.jpg

p.s. magi, can you color it if you have some spare time?

nazpyro Aug 3, 2006 11:02 PM

That's a hot knife. And check out that side boob.

Magi Aug 3, 2006 11:20 PM

I am with spiderman.

You are saying it as if I am always here. oh wait, I am, nevermind

But that'll change once this semaster starts.

http://www.studiomagi.com/temp/knife_colored_sd.jpg
The line art looks really good, I am sure Jessykins will be happy. :3

EDIT:
I actually perfer the black and white look.

Vemp Aug 3, 2006 11:39 PM

wtf.. you color so fast.

Don't worry, I'll visit your art thread the way you're in here. That way you can leave P.S. notes for me too. Heh.

Jessykins Aug 4, 2006 05:01 AM

Omfg, I love you guys. Come be my personal artists please?

Also, if that was the cover image idea you were talking about, it's pretty fucking sweet. If I saw that as a cover, I'd totally want to read what was inside. And then if I saw it was MY writing, I'd want to read it more, because Rue is awesome

Vemp Aug 4, 2006 08:57 AM

I'll be your personal artist anytime.

Also, this is the cover thing I was thinking about, but maybe I'm gonna do some more Rue fanart, and then move to the sequentials. :)

Dhsu Aug 4, 2006 09:40 AM

Wow, that is really, really hot.

Very nice work, vemp and Magi. Can't wait to see where this goes!

Ohh, man. I just stumbled into this thread and now I'm going to have to go find some crappy drawings to make myself feel better.... Damn you Vemp and your self-taught skillz! I'm going to go take my drawings down off the corkboard now.

In retrospect, I think Frank Cho was supposed to be self taught too... Wish I had the perserverence to do the same.

Vemp Aug 7, 2006 10:50 AM

Dude, keep your drawings. I keep my sucky ones, that way it would remind me to improve and best my former effort. And it's also a way for you to measure how your art is progressing.

whinehurst Aug 7, 2006 03:06 PM

lol, i don't even have a corkboard.

it was just my way of expressing that you have a supior gift, and my envy of it. :)

Vemp Sep 8, 2006 03:23 AM

Just something to bump this thread.

A week or two ago, we had this drawing contest thing with my friends and fellow artists. The theme was to draw an undead, here's mine.

http://xs305.xs.to/xs305/06344/vempundead.jpg

I need to draw some more. Stupid school. -_-

Magi Sep 8, 2006 03:33 AM

Awesome, now there is something different. :3 You are really getting better at this fill in the darkness business. fading between the light and darkness is pretty naturally looking now, especially on the face. Hm, although I thought the shirt is rather clean cut for an undead. :b I think it'd be interesting if it is broken up more so we can see into it a little, but this is looking really good.

When you are working with other artist, and see different things people do, it really helps you improve. :3 Gotta have that competitive edge.

Vemp Sep 8, 2006 08:25 AM

Thanks man. Working with other artists does have an advantage. Not only you can ask for tips and stuff, copy techniques, but you're given that competitive feeling. It's a great thing since you get to be motivated to improve or make something much better or on par with what the others are doing.

p.s. that's a new shirt. :p

nazpyro Sep 8, 2006 08:39 AM

Wow. Check out the boobers on that one. OWAI~ ;_;

That drawing's abit eerie. What's it say on the dog tag? And what's the deal with the gun.. it's around him? And where's that side boob?

Jessykins Sep 11, 2006 04:16 PM

It's one of those rifle straps, yo.

Vemp Sep 13, 2006 09:58 AM

I started this fucker 2 (or was it 3) nights ago. 1st night was on pencils, then I stopped to study for an exam. The 2nd night I started on the inks. Then stopped halfway (or was it less). I posted the WIP in my journal. So then last night I continued with the inks, and stopped after a while so I can play some NFS: Most Wanted (why the hell did I bother playing that game anyway?). So earlier tonight, I said to myself, "fuck man, you need to finish that so you can start on some new stuff", "ok, let's do this." It started ok, I was inking it slow and nicely, adding details and stuff. And then I approached some problems. Mainly the shadows, the wall/concrete texture effect, misc. decorations (sup 2 vases), and some designs on the wall (failed chain design of some sort). Also, I think I kind of messed up the shadow on the column and the rest of the shadow thing at the bottom. I was kind of doing it in a hurry, made mistakes, then covered them up with lots of black. Oh well, gotta learn from your mistakes.

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/art/th_barbarian.jpg

p.s. It's a Conan inspired art, even though it doesn't look anywhere close to Conan.

Magi Sep 13, 2006 02:57 PM

Wonderful. This is the best composition that I have seen from you so far. One thing to keep in mind when it comes to given then shadows is that, the light acts very linearly on objects. So I guess there could be several inconsistencies in terms of their placement throughout, in particular, the column. So that even though there is a shadow core, there shouldn't be light equality light at the backside unless there is a second light source. Inconsistencies in terms of shadows can reduce the depth to a considerable extend, and especially that you are using a strong contrast for shadows at this point.

Vemp Sep 14, 2006 03:20 AM

Yeah, I had a lot of problems with the shadows, especially the column and the wall. That's probably the part where it took me some time to start inking, and I messed up the bottom shadows, hence a lot of blacks in that area. :) I messed up a lot of stuff, I hope to correct them in the following pieces.

Sakabadger Sep 14, 2006 04:14 PM

Yeah, uhh.

I dunno why I never really noticed this thread before (what with being in #comics and all) but this stuff is incredible. If I just saw these images on the web somewhere, I'd assume they were drawn by a pro.

Awesome stuff, man. Spam moar drawings on IRC d00d

lol what. that's too much, but thanks anyway.

(I guess I owe you guys some boobs drawings now, eh :p)

Scarletdeath Sep 15, 2006 10:04 AM

Vemp, I've been following up with you stuff for quite sometime now. I've never posted here because I know nothing of hand drawn materials, so I probably couldn't say something constructive like magi.

Still, I have to say your works are amazing. Put some full color into it and it can even match CGs. You really must try selling your skills in the comic biz, at least part time for now.

Jessykins Sep 15, 2006 01:26 PM

Seriously, Vemp, this thread says boobers in the title, and the boober content is pretty lacking. Severely lacking, in fact.

Vemp Sep 15, 2006 09:10 PM

scarlet, thanks man, I'm actually gonna try and color the last piece I did and see if it fares well. And don't worry jessy, the next one will probably have boobers.. that or sometime soon. -_-

Vemp Nov 1, 2006 09:01 AM

Happy Halloween GFF, and with that comes a halloween-themed drawing based on the comicbook "Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse", here ya go kiddies:

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/th_wormy.jpg

And I also tried coloring it. Here's the WIP:

I also have a question for the photoshop saavy reader; how do you change the color of your lineart? :)

Comments, pizzas, and marbles are deeply appreciated.

Vemp Nov 6, 2006 08:39 PM

Here's my first attempt at digital coloring:

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/th_wormy-colored.jpg

I'll probably work on some boobs now.

Jessykins Nov 6, 2006 09:39 PM

That's actually not a bad coloring job, Vempykins.

Remember what I said. No boobers, NO LIFE.

DjMeas Nov 6, 2006 11:49 PM

I usually don't come to this side of the forums, but i must say:

ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR WORK!! KEEP IT UP!

They are BEAUTIFUL~~

Vemp Nov 7, 2006 09:57 AM

Thanks man, I'll draw you some boobies for that. (and for Jessy)

Here's how I do it:

Go to Channels. There's a icon of a dotted circle that says "load channel as selection." Click that then invert the selection. Then go to Edit > Fill with whatever color you want.

Vemp Nov 8, 2006 11:17 PM

hey thanks fellow Filipino user.

(same goes to you, naz!)

Vemp Nov 13, 2006 11:14 AM

nazpyro Nov 13, 2006 03:31 PM

Not the boobs I had in mind. Not at all. Nice (EVIL!) art, but NOT NICE BOOBS. ;__;

Vemp Nov 16, 2006 11:52 AM

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/monica_1.jpg

Did this while waiting for a download to finish. The original picture looked so beautiful, so I tried drawing it. I guess you can call this my first "portrait".

Magi Nov 16, 2006 09:14 PM

Nice, the line work looks spot on. If you could just push the chiaroscuro (the transition between light and dark) aspect of the shading further, it would be just perfect. :3

aiyaitsai Nov 16, 2006 09:57 PM

I just choked oh my drink when I scrolled onto the zombie boob picture. Thanks man. Haha, but those two pieces are great. What Magi said about the transition is great and all, but I like the sharp contrast.

VitaminZinc Nov 16, 2006 10:48 PM

Do you mind posting a link to the picture that inspired it? I'm kind of curious of how it looks/differs from your interpretation, if at all.

Awesome job, btw.

Another one I did while waiting for a download to finish. Took me about an hour, and a bit more for the cleaning. I'm doing these for familiarizaiton of the anatomy structure of the female body. I'm still learning. Reference is a Heidi Klum pic.

I still can't draw hands :(

nazpyro Nov 20, 2006 02:29 PM

Easily the best one in a while. :p

There's supposedly other things one can do to familiarize himself with the anatomy structure of the female body, but drawing is probably the best way.

I am still at school, so I couldn't really view it in full size to make specific critques. >.>;;

Do you use anatomy books? You can really use some shading exercises, because those exercise doesn't just help you learn how to render forms, but also force you to think of human forms in the sense of light and dark, and how different form effects lights that travels throughout a surface of a structure, and then it would make it easier to construe shapes from different angle that way. :3

I also gotta admit, I am not the best of hand drawer, however, you can always use your own hand as a model, and often people make a full sheets of drawing just of hands. Drawing hands could be fun, because there are a lot of expression that can come from the hand, be it compositional and emotional expression.

Vemp Nov 20, 2006 07:55 PM

Man, I've always wanted that drawing anatomy book at the bookstore. So far, I just refer from pictures or other drawings just to determine where shadows should go. Books are still a great way to learn things, I just don't have the money to buy one (or more).

As for hands, male hands are no problem, you can draw them as rough as you can, it's the female hands that I'm having difficulties with :( They look ugly if they have MAN-HANDS. So, I'm trying to fix that.

Also, if you noticed, my lines are VERY DIRTY, I can't seem to make clean lines at all. I have shaky hands, that's why most of my drawings don't have that much curves. :(

Double Post:
http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/th_cassie.jpg

Wonder Girl. Tried doing inks again. Still having a hard time doing them. Always had a hard time doing them. There's a couple of errors in this one, hope you see them. Comments, suggestions, tips, etc, are very much welcomed.

Jessykins Dec 1, 2006 03:35 AM

Great stuff, Vemp. Look forward to more pictures of RUE!!

Vemp Dec 1, 2006 09:09 AM

Thanks Jessy! Here's something for you:

http://www.opimage.co.uk/u/daikon/th_rue3.jpg

I forgot I can't draw guns, so 50% of the time was wasted on drawing the gun.

Scarletdeath Dec 1, 2006 09:23 AM

Vemp, can you draw a.. say, 4 page mini comic? I love your art, but even better if it's compiled into something. =p

nazpyro Dec 1, 2006 01:52 PM

What you lack in gun-drawing ability you more than make up for in other drawing abilities... :p

Artist of the year!

Vemp Dec 2, 2006 11:47 AM

Scarletdeath Dec 2, 2006 11:53 AM

Vemp Dec 2, 2006 12:10 PM

Don't envy me, I don't have a girlfriend :(

Scarletdeath Dec 2, 2006 12:35 PM

[edit] Actually, that Jim Balent art isn't that special. I found an entire torrent compiled of art with boobs. 672MB of it.

Here's another example of an awesome pirate art

aiyaitsai Jan 1, 2007 09:54 PM

Damn vemp. These new pieces are awesome.

Besides the reoccurring anatomy error (I think you usually draw the lower half of the body smaller than they really are), your coloring skills have improved so much. My fave is the nipple-less girl. :tpg:

Kinda reminds me of the flip side of my Sin piece-- but better.

Vemp Jan 1, 2007 10:14 PM

ai, yeah, I have problems with the lower half of the female body, (and some other parts too), I can't put a finger to it, but I'm trying to figure it out.

I'm trying out a shading technique..

Well rendered upper back can be sexy too. ;) I thought that same woman’s outline can have a little more curve, but that’s probably just my preference talking. Are you using reference?

Vemp Jan 17, 2007 11:52 PM

Yep, I used a reference on this one, I'm still bad at composing poses on my own. And I do have a problem with my lines (outlines), my other friend said I should thicken them a bit so that it can give them a bit more "form" (I don't know what that exactly means, but I think I get it.) :D
