Sony Press Conference (discussion and live stream)

Okay guys since it was asked to split the Sony Press Conference discussion away from the PS3 thread we'll have it in here.

http://www.gamespot.com/e3/e3live.html

Go there to watch it streamed for free.

Right now they're playing music because it's behind schedule but it'll start soon hopefully.

Once this is over keep any discussion of how they handled the conference and any pluses and minuses and stuff in here and discussion of the PS3 in the PS3 thread.

Enjoy! =D

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 06:52 PM

Thank you acer.

Its started, well the sound has.

Grubdog May 8, 2006 06:53 PM

Started!

cubed May 8, 2006 06:53 PM

Pietak May 8, 2006 06:53 PM

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 06:53 PM

Shonos May 8, 2006 06:54 PM

EDIT: Now I have picture buts its frozen, nothing like a pink shirt.

Pietak May 8, 2006 06:54 PM

Keym May 8, 2006 06:55 PM

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 06:58 PM

As mentioned before text feed here http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=64373

The Gamespot data center is on fire I tell you now.

cubed May 8, 2006 06:59 PM

works fine for me

Technophile May 8, 2006 06:59 PM

Is anyone actually getting a feed where it doesn't buffer every 10 seconds?

cubed May 8, 2006 07:00 PM

press PLay again. It stopped but it continues to stream.

Pietak May 8, 2006 07:01 PM

Well, hundreds of people are pretty much ass-ramming the server now so...

Infernal Monkey May 8, 2006 07:01 PM

Running fairly smoothly here via GameSpot's 100k stream. Haha awesome, another ATV game for PS2. Who needs PS3 now? Another bloody ATV game!

Double Post:
"When I play games I become a monkey"

Seriously what?

cubed May 8, 2006 07:08 PM

if you become a monkey by playing video games, you are playing too much. or not enough.

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 07:08 PM

What is this stuff? Shitty Sony worldwide PR crap. Let's stroke our ego over and over. Waste of time.

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 07:09 PM

SONY'S NOT ABOUT GIMMICKS.

We're also turning the PSP into a gimmick-free camera, phone and GPS locator.

Urgh why are they still using the spiderman logo?

Shonos May 8, 2006 07:10 PM

Thank god, finally they get to the damn PS3. Give us the price already. We've seen the stats.

Free.User May 8, 2006 07:10 PM

I can't beleive they didn't go to Canada with those interviews.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:11 PM

15,000 titles??

Yeah right, I can just see all the firmware updates to make the PS1/PS2 games work properly.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:16 PM

I bet they don't reveal the price.

Why did they have to start with GT4:HD.

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:17 PM

OK so HDD confirmed to be outta the box. I wish he confirmed that ti'll also be 60 gigs though.

Keym May 8, 2006 07:17 PM

Yay stream got BETTER.

So far the best quote was WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN GIMMICKS.

No Dayvon, it's just a prototype. Not sure if it's in game either.

Keym May 8, 2006 07:21 PM

That Gran Turismo demo looks hardly impressive. =\

It's still going on Dayvon.

Infernal Monkey May 8, 2006 07:22 PM

Phil is our friend, friend to all. Gran Turismo HD looks like Gran Turismo 3 Panasonic 48cm TV-D. Scooters are an awesome addition though!

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:24 PM

Anyone else find this demo a bit boring?

cubed May 8, 2006 07:28 PM

Enough with GT. Show me something interesting.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:28 PM

Oh God no they are going to show us all 4 tracks.

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:29 PM

Taterdemalion May 8, 2006 07:29 PM

Why are people standing in the middle of the road in the Grand Canyon track?

kupomog May 8, 2006 07:29 PM

Sigh...I wish I gave a crap about Gran Turismo...was more of a Ridge Racer player. And that horn noise in the Grand Canyon track is getting irritating.

Keym May 8, 2006 07:29 PM

That last track was nice. But come ON.

TheReverend May 8, 2006 07:31 PM

Is this just me or does this seem "blah blah blah"?

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 07:32 PM

I like how there are no dust particles or anything at all. Give us some fucking weather or something. GT4 looks as boring and lifeless like it always has. Moving on.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:33 PM

LoL pokemon cards??

One for the Yu-gi-oh fanboys.

God that looked shit, is that their idea of humor??

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 07:33 PM

It's like the high definition of audio!

TheReverend May 8, 2006 07:33 PM

Keym May 8, 2006 07:33 PM

DUCK FLAMETHROWER GO

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:35 PM

ROFL BATHTUB DUCK!

I guess Sony's take a page outta Nintendo's book with more eyetoy options.

Keym May 8, 2006 07:37 PM

cubed May 8, 2006 07:38 PM

"free.. of charge"... haha no reaction

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:38 PM

Free of charge??

I refuse to believe that, there has to be a catch somewhere besides from the downloadable content.

HAHAH LOL RIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEER

Nobody else cheered.

Emulator sweet, new life for my psp.

Infernal Monkey May 8, 2006 07:40 PM

Ahaha PSone emulation. "RIIIIDGE RACER, REMEMBER THAT ONE?" Of course I don't Mr. Sony! 1995 was a long, long time ago!

TheReverend May 8, 2006 07:40 PM

Is he seriously going to play a PS One game onstage right now? In the middle of the PS3 introduction to the world...

Ridge racer.

Huh.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 07:43 PM

I actually remember that Ridge Racer. And even thought we need to fork out money for the downloads at least we get that cool looking card.

PS3 = Kareoke machine now?

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:43 PM

The controllers look just like the PS2 one's in silver, I sure hope they are PS2 controllers and not the new PS3 one's.

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:44 PM

Better than what he selected now!

Shonos May 8, 2006 07:44 PM

I have to admit, that interface looks kind of nice. Though, I'm kinda iffy on the whole shop through your ps3 thing. If I wanted to do that i would uh.. go use my pc.

TheReverend May 8, 2006 07:44 PM

Is it just me or are all those controllers on the wall that they are demoing the PS3 games with just normal Dual Shock controllers? Does that tell us anything?

RYU May 8, 2006 07:45 PM

So, for those of you who arent watching the live stream, they are doing a worldwide launch in Early November. Also, a hard drive is going to be included with every system. Still awaiting to hear how much it is going to cost, but I doubt its coming. I almost feel like im watching an infomercial

OH LAG IN THE DEMO

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:47 PM

That Japan feudel game looks poo too.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 07:47 PM

Those look like normal PS2 Dual shock controllers. An improvement from the bat/boomberang controller showed last time?

Giant Crab !!! lets flip it ovER! woot. Weak points for extra damage, revolutionary idea... only doable on the PS3, right.

cubed May 8, 2006 07:48 PM

he sucks at his own game.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:49 PM

I didn't mind the boomerang, I thought it looked really sleek and modern.

Keym May 8, 2006 07:49 PM

These demos suck.

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 07:49 PM

Wow, in ancient Japan they had robotic crabs and real-time weapon and character switching in actual famous battles? I never would have known! Thanks Genji 2!

cubed May 8, 2006 07:49 PM

HISTORICAL. BIG CRAB. REALISTIC. I MISSED THAT TIME.

kupomog May 8, 2006 07:49 PM

Wow, those enemies are pretty much just standing around waiting to be hit...

Technophile May 8, 2006 07:50 PM

Well that was another yawner.

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 07:50 PM

Ugh, that demo of Genji just proves that good graphics don't make a good game.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:51 PM

LOL WTF why would I want to use my PSP as a wing mirror, most stupidest thing ever. LOL he didn't even show F1 2006 properly, maybe because it looked shit.

kupomog May 8, 2006 07:51 PM

So that you can attempt to hold the PSP in one hand, while using the other to control the game with the PS3 controler. =/

WTF? "No gimmicks" ey Sony?

Keym May 8, 2006 07:52 PM

Okay this gladiator demo looks better.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 07:52 PM

PSP can how be used as rear view mirror! talk about PSP utility.

TheReverend May 8, 2006 07:53 PM

These games better look astronomically better than this video feed........

Shonos May 8, 2006 07:53 PM

okay this current game looks good. And fucking OUCH she sliced right into his damn crotch.

cubed May 8, 2006 07:53 PM

Right in the crotch.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 07:53 PM

That gladiator game looks pretty good but its animations don't seem quite so revultionary considering God of War's animations.

FLYing HAt of DOOM! FTW

Keym May 8, 2006 07:54 PM

Eat your heart out, God of War.

Infernal Monkey May 8, 2006 07:54 PM

Looks pretty awesome in a gigantic scripted event kinda way. =o

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 07:54 PM

So... Heavenly Sword is basically God of War with HDR lighting.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 07:54 PM

That hack n slash looks decent but too much glow, haha OddJob hat trick.

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 07:55 PM

pres butan get action sequence! I doubt he was in full control of all of that.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 07:56 PM

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:01 PM

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:02 PM

Monster/Mother Kingdom looked kick ass.

cubed May 8, 2006 08:02 PM

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:03 PM

New crash bandicoot? new Spryo? Nvm, just some Tomb Raider rip-off

FatsDomino May 8, 2006 08:04 PM

Seems like an odd rail shooter almost. Cool action though. I still wonder how much of this is prerendered.

Keym May 8, 2006 08:04 PM

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 08:04 PM

You act like that genre's new. I hope to god you're not referring to Halo, since Doom did that shit loooooooooong before Bungie ever thought of it.

Save mankind from demons, aliens, whatever. It ain't new anymore and nobody who has done it recently thought of it first.

EDIT: This looks hot.

Keym May 8, 2006 08:08 PM

Boring FPS.

Infernal Monkey May 8, 2006 08:08 PM

So is Resistance the first PS3 game to actually show gameplay? ='D

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:08 PM

This is the first time I'm impressed by a 1st person shooter.

Tawnee Van Pelt May 8, 2006 08:09 PM

I hate FPS games >____>

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 08:10 PM

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 08:10 PM

Keym May 8, 2006 08:10 PM

Wall Feces May 8, 2006 08:11 PM

Hey great, another FPS.

BORING.

Show the new controller, damn it.

Tails May 8, 2006 08:11 PM

GUNDAMUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I haven't played a Gundam game in years, this could be good.

Metal Sphere May 8, 2006 08:13 PM

They're already shown it in shots and slides online. It's just a wireless Dual Shock 2 with triggers. For the most part, I would've preferred fucking slides. This has been pretty boring so far.

Oh, and nice turn out from Insomniac and Naughty Dog. Not like I was expecting utter shit from them, given the games they've made this gen.

cubed May 8, 2006 08:13 PM

Coded Arms Assault ? Cool. I think I was the only one that enjoys the PSP game.

More ridge racer, more Brothers in arms, and more Tekken, with bikes this time around, and more Sonic.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 08:13 PM

Tekken looks terrible, Virtua Fighter looks better.

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:14 PM

Meh Sonic....not sure how I feel about it.

Tails May 8, 2006 08:15 PM

Good to see the Virtua Tennis series is alive and kicking. So far so good Sony.

If they can reproduce the awesome that was Ridge Racer 4 then I'll love Namco all over again.

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:17 PM

URGH WTF connection gone!

Sprouticus, we're hoping that something of substance will be shown still.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 08:19 PM

Maybe they are showcasing HD and Blu Ray on the PS3 to mimic a black screen

"lookz its so realistic"

I expect this same black screen to occur with the 1st batch of PS3s.

Wall Feces May 8, 2006 08:20 PM

Ok, atleast I'm not the only one.

Getting impatient, come on gamespot...

Ramenbetsu May 8, 2006 08:20 PM

Sony needs to take my money now. After I saw Heavenly Sword, Tekken 6, Virtua Fighter 5, GUNDAM?!?!? Im sold.

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:20 PM

Urgh great, another sleep inducing demo.

Same, except for Virtua Tennis 3 and a few others.

At least we've seen Sony won't have awful third party support, as usual.

So far so good, IMO.

now they are comparing PS2 and PS3 though

Wesley Snipes? Well, better him than someone not cool and in touch with what's cool.

All I see is black... Could be just an extreme close up on Snipes' muscles though

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 08:23 PM

I don't play sports games, but that demo of realistic foot movement was actually really cool.

That's actually a much better use of powerful processing than just having high polycounts and high resolution textures.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:23 PM

Close the current video window and go back to Gspot's web page with the link to the live video feed and open up a new window, thats how I got the vid back.

Taterdemalion May 8, 2006 08:36 PM

So they ripped of Wii. Excellent.

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 08:36 PM

I honestly don't know why everyone hated the boomerang so much.

Dualshock + Revolution ripoff is the lamest thing ever.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:36 PM

At least it doesn't look as horrible as the older controller, but the new funtionality? Sounds kinda like a rip off the Revolution... LAME BULLSHIT!!!

I preffered the Boomerang it looked cool.

WOW I bet it took them months to think of that controller design....

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 08:37 PM

Motion control. Yay.

Not a rip off of the Wii because it doesn't use external sensors.

OH SHIT WARHAWK.

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 08:39 PM

The graphics in Warhawk are awesome.

Wall Feces May 8, 2006 08:39 PM

Yeah, it's half-assed, just like everything Sony does.

Grubdog May 8, 2006 08:40 PM

What a joke. The control with that looks terrible, they';re basically doing this so people think the Wii does the exact same thing so they dismiss it as a gimmick.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:40 PM

Well at least when I'm playing GT5 (or any racers) when I turn my controller it will actually do something now. Its still a blatant rip off of Nintendo.

Shonos May 8, 2006 08:40 PM

Oh shit watching that demo I just realized something. Imagine that in Ace Combat 6.

YOU MUST TWIST THE CONTROLLER AND DODGE THE PLANES IN THE EXTREMELY TIGHT TUNNEL! ENGAGE.

NES Oldskooler May 8, 2006 08:40 PM

He doesn't seem to be controlling the flight sim very well with it.

Wow, I honestly feel bad for Nintendo right now. They totally should have waited until this year's E3 to show the remote.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 08:41 PM

Pfft he couldn't even land using all the wheels.

Stealth May 8, 2006 08:41 PM

Stupid Sony.

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:41 PM

Yeah it only controls leaning because that's probebly all they could have done between the time Nintendo unveiled the Wiimote and now!

Frylock May 8, 2006 08:41 PM

500-600$? Yeah, sure Sony. OK. You just fucked yourself over.

Taterdemalion May 8, 2006 08:43 PM

$600 for 60GB PS3. They weren't kidding.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:45 PM

wow, 20 gig - $499, 60gig - $599. High end of what the analysts predicted, and damn fuck is it expensive.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 08:45 PM

Thats like £500 for a PS3 judging by the euro price, talk about a kick in the face.

I was quite unimpressed, I was expected more of show but it was boring as hell.

When it comes Christmas time those parents will go for the half price 360, $600 dollars is insane.

Technophile May 8, 2006 08:45 PM

Sony just crippled itself. I highly doubt most people will shell out 600 bucks for a gaming console.

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 08:45 PM

Did you guys really expect anything less though? It's got better hardware than the X-Box 360, it's obviously going to cost more.

Forsakenzoul May 8, 2006 08:47 PM

WTF was that. A ripped off controller and now 600bucks to shell for a 7900XT and 60GB......with a Wii modded controller great.....

Metal Sphere May 8, 2006 08:48 PM

Wow, it's like that conference was trying to make us avoid the PS3. I wasn't even expecting a price announcement either. Sprouticus got that shit right, they're gone. Even with the hype around this thing, $500 is way too much for what, up until now, as been rather underwhelming.

Half-assed Wii-mote, lackluster games, and a hugh price point = Doom.

If Nintendo announces a low price point for the Wii tomorrow (anything under $300 is low at this point), you can all start bowing down to your new gaming new leaders.

Of course they're gonna sell-out everywhere for the first few months, but I don't see those sales going strong beyond that with that ridiculous price tag and half-assed controller. I'd like to think that gamers are a little smarter than this.

How is the 360 going to rape it in the market if the PS3 sells its entire shipment? That makes no sense. Selling out is a sucess.

Yggdrasil May 8, 2006 08:54 PM

The only chance of Sony saving its ass is by releasing the PS3 with quality launch titles. Even then a 499 price tag is going to be a hard sell. But it'll sell nonetheless.

I have a feeling that even at the insane price, the hype will sell the system.

It'll be interesting to see how well Nintendo does in a completely different price range.

Grubdog May 8, 2006 08:55 PM

Only 6 degrees of movement? This motion thing is as restrictive as a fucking DPAD. The ENTIRE POINT of the motion sensing stuff is to add more accuracy, this is hilariously pointless.

I know their strategy. The motion sensing stuff isn't really going to be a big focus of PS3, they just made it tacked on on purpose, so people would see it and say "that's nothing special" and then dismiss Wii as a gimmick because they wont bother to learn more about it. It's pretty genius

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 08:55 PM

I'm seriously considering reserving a few and then selling them on eBay for mega profit.

Yes but the 360 will have had more units shipped to be sold, the PS3 will be sold out the moment they start excepting pre orders, the 360 should have quite a continous supply even up till the holidays.

I don't think many parents would fork out £600 for PS3, they would rather go for the cheaper option the Wii or the 360.

Can't even believe how true this is. Wii-mote, get off the fucking earth.

TheReverend May 8, 2006 08:57 PM

Everyone's gonna want one. That's true.

I think we all want a Ferrari. I know I do.

Then again, I aint buying a ferrari for $100,000 - and I'm not buying a PS3 for $499.

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 08:57 PM

Also, why are you all saying that the games weren't impressive? What was not impressive about the stuff that they showed? The EA sports titles look ridiculous. All of the games that I saw clips of had crazy graphics as well. I was very impressed by what I saw.

Frylock May 8, 2006 08:58 PM

Watch Sony release a better motion sensing controller once it figures out a way to bypass Nintendo's patent.

Everyone's just jaded, who are you trying to kid. I can afford a PS3 easy, I know what I'm getting in November.

True, there was some crap (SONIC, UGH) but a lot of it looked interesting.

I know their strategy. The motion sensing stuff isn't really going to be a big focus of PS3, they just made it tacked on on purpose, so people would see it and say "that's nothing special" and then dismiss Wii as a gimmick because they wont bother to learn more about it. It's pretty genius

My hope is that people will see how craptacular the whole thing is and then say "wow, I wish this was better."

Cue Wii.

Sony used CG last year and they're getting owned across the net for it. Had they showed some roughly early footage and some short teasers the reaction would've been positive now. But most of those fell short of what we saw last year, regardless of how unrealistic we knew they were.

Insomniac and Naughty Dog had great showings though, and Heavenly Sword isn't nothing to blow off. MGS4? Terrific, but not for $499.

I can afford it easily as well, still doesn't mean I'm willing to fork out $600.

Besides I expect all the first PS3's to give a permanant black screen of death, judging by Sony's release history.

Metal Sphere May 8, 2006 09:01 PM

Whoa... actually, they'd be more likely to go to the 360, rather than the Wii, since most casuals take games at face value (graphics).

It would've been more effective if the price point was lower. Since Sony wants to make it so that poeple can't differentiate between PS3 and Wii, they'll probably go with the Wii because it's less expensive and, to them, appears the same.

You're saying that ISN'T crappy? You saw the guy holding the controller, he looked like he was IN PAIN. It's going to be uncomfortable and awkward doing all this movement with a two-handed controller. Pretty much what I expected.

High-end PC graphics (and a bit better generally speaking).
Check.

Same gameplay stuff (not boring, just not "wow").
Check.

Gimmicky stuff (Eyetoy specifically, also PSP "rearview mirror", and in-game store to rape my VISA card).
Check.

Support from all the big money-makers/franchises (EA, SqEnix, Kojima, etc.)
Check.

VERY high price ($500 minimum).
Check.

Surprises? Obviously the tilt controller gimmick/ripoff/tacked-on/half-assed thing.

Does that sum it up?!

The only thing it can serve for is mess up what Wii has going for it by fooling the general public into going for the PS3, and thus, killing off Wii's attempt which seems infenantly better.

The only reason they were vague about it is because it's probebly super limited as you suspected.

I dunno. PlayStation 2 absolutely crushed both the Xbox and GameCube this/last/whatever generation, despite being the weakest out of the three. PlayStation outsold Nintendo 64. DS is outselling PSP.

Graphics = Shrugging of shoulders.

PS3 will sell well because of

- PlayStation logo
- Madden
- Square-Enix
- Insert other reasons here that I can't predict because it's not due out until November but I'm guessing it'll sell well even though it's six hundred dollars or about eight thousand dollars Australian and also I wonder what will be on the demo disc, hopefully a video of someone falling over that'd be excellent time for lunch!

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 09:16 PM

If it will be £600 juding by the euro price I could probably pick up a 360 core package and the Wii when it comes out.

British players get raped especially hard due to how weak the dollar is, they usually addon like £200.

Newbie1234 May 8, 2006 09:16 PM

Aside from it being a blatant steal from Nintendo, I have no problems with it. They added the Xbox 360 guide button too, so they stole from both sides, yet the Xbox controller's design originally stole from the Playstation one. Who cares, at the end of the day, I'll probably pick one up anyway.

I just with the price weren't so damn high. Also, the only games that really impressed me was MGS4 & Final Fantasy XIII, and I doubt either will be out on launch. I didn't see any Killzone trailer, so that was disappointing.

Wiimote + PS3 controller = lawsuit????

and

Did developers know about this new "innovative" controller functionality before today? Because if they did, I don't think anyone would be quite so excited about Wii.

Definitely. Overall, this wasn't the greatest showing from Sony in my opinion. If Microsoft's really got Halo 3, they can top this. If Nintendo's got some playable games, they can definitely beat the Warhawk demo for sure. The "Resistance" game by Insomniac was terrible, and perhaps the lowest point for the PS3.

I don't venture in here very much, but I'm now suddenly very glad I won my XBox 360. $500 or $600 is FAR too expensive, especially for a ripoff of a system that's bound to be loads cheaper.

About the new DualShock, I do recall Phil Harrison saying that there was movement across x,y and z axes. So it isn't quite as limited as some have cried. And how can anyone make comparisons between the PS3 controller and the Wii controller when nobody has viewed the Wii controller in action?

And perhaps I may be playing devil's advocate, but we can't prove 100% Sony ripped off Nintendo. Their projects may have been developed in parallel and independently. We hadn't recieved any word about the controller in a year, and that ws before Wiimote was introduced. I guess the only thing that will settle this is a patent search.

Lawsuit?

I really think that might happen with this one. Nintendo is AWFUL protective of their intellectual property and patents. They might hit this one head on. Speculation? Yes. Probability? Possibly.

__________________________________________________ ___________
EDIT: Saw this posted at IGN.

6:33 -- Kuturagi takes the stage. He introduces the PS3 controlled ... and it's the PS3 controller?!? It looks exactly the same, but it has many new function. Most importantly, it has "6 degrees" of motion-sensing movement. (Um, Nintendo, what do you have to say about this?) You can move it up and down, you have pitch and yaw and roll movement, and it's all still wireless and, in fact, lighter than PS2's DualShock.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/705/705742p1.html

Does that clear up the controller movement questions?

It doesn't matter, everyone including me will call Sony wiinies on this.

Wall Feces May 8, 2006 09:30 PM

Yeah, I would say Sony developing analog control and then force feedback for their controller after the N64 was released was really just a coincidence. Kinda like this whole "free movement" thing.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 09:31 PM

Seriously can you Wii fans give it a rest, just wait till the Nintendo conference.

Foshi May 8, 2006 09:32 PM

Awesomness. The controller looks great; just what I thought they would do with the design. Motion sensing is a nice idea; just like Nintendo, but I doubt it will be put to any good use. Price point is no prob, its a hellva lot cheaper than a $5000 gaming computer. I already have all of the money saved up anyway from not buying a 360. MGS4, and FFXIII look to be the big hooks for the PS3. $500 is really not all that bad, considering all that we are getting for our money. Sony is taking the lose here. If they just keep up with the exclusive games they should have nothing to worry about. All of their fans from the previous systems will defininetly jump aboard. I know I will. PS3 and Wii for me.

Sony ripped them off by having a motion sensing controller? How so? Motion sensing controllers have been around on the PC for ages. They all suck as the learning curve for them is ridiculous. The controllers are not even remotely alike. Nintendo has their own design and way of doing things. Sony just added some axis control to their design. Neither of these controllers will be anything alike.

Technophile May 8, 2006 09:38 PM

If the feature itself is as good and as fleshed out as Wii's then I wouldn't care. But as of now, it just seems like a cheap, cheap, quickly put together, inferior shot at Nintendo.

Yes but Nintendo's the first company to bring the feature into mainstream console gaming and make it worth the effort. It's just too peculiar that suddenly, Sony implements this feature now.

Um, Nintendo's stated time and time again that their consoles are for gaming only. Even in the unlikely event that Wii's remote will function as a universal remote as well, (I don't know where the hell you got that from) it still barely taps into TV manufacturer's main offering. TVs!

Wait, wait, wait. They removed vibration because it disrupts the sensors? Does this mean if I jerk my arm in the slightest by accident while playing I could severely fuck up in whatever I'm playing? I hope there's an option to turn this 'feature' off or atleast not be as sensitive as I think it is.

Kesubei May 8, 2006 09:48 PM

Interesting. I'm gonna miss the vibration feature. Oh well.

I hope too many games do not take advantage of the motion sensing feature. I can imagine someone playing Ace Combat or something with it, looking like a jackass.

Because your argument is flawed! Are you seriously trying to imply that there's nothing odd about Sony suddenly anouncing a tacked on motion sensing feature now that it's established that it's Wii's main selling point?

Nobody here has played the PS3 controller either. If self experience is what designates who should talk about ANYTHING, then we wouldn't be able to talk about the PS3 or the Nintendo Wii at ALL. Educative speculation is what leads us to draw comparisons and conclusions between things we haven't ourselves seen or experienced. Point in case, everybody here has a right to express their opinions about either console in an objective manner.

Personally, I don't like what Sony did with their "6 degree" controller. Why do you think everybody is getting annoyed over the fact that it's such a blatant rip-off of the Wii remote?
Because it's wrong. Because ripping off competitors' hardware capabilities is wrong. Unless you honestly have something to add to the experience, it's just a me-too add on. And not only that, but Sony is being hypocritical! They say "no gimmicks" but then they reveal the "6 degree" controller and the Eyetoy and the likes. It's sick. And this kind of hypocritical behavior is sick and should not be condoned.

On a side note...
You know, one of your problems, Mucknuggle, is that you defend the PS3 yet you dismiss any responsibility from your words by saying things like this:

What's hilarious is how everyone attributes Sonys "stealing" to Nintendos failure. It's not like they take an idea and then go to Nintendos HQ and kill everyone who came up with or can enhance it. Nintendos own incompetency is what sets them back from being number one, not anyone else. PS2 was arguably the weakest of the last gen consoles, and yet it was a complete powerhouse. Obviously this is somehow related to them ripping off Nintendo all the time.

It's not even the same fucking thing. From the looks of it it's a gyro whereas the TV remote is a complete motion sensor you have to actually swing around and shit..

Apparently this is in addition to the lack of a HDMI output and various memory card and SD card support, and internal internet support. Certainly mirrors Microsoft's 360 launch where if you got the core version of the console you basically got a crippled version of the console. Seems like if you want a real PS3 you gotta fork over that $599.

As for the Wii rip, whatever, whats done is done (shame they took out the rumble though, maybe its because they thought Nintendo was going to do it) and its not like the technology/idea is totally ruined because of it.

That's always been my stand on the names for consoles, so we're in agreement there, I don't know where you got that I had any problem with it. I'm just saying that the sheep will buy the PS3 because of the massive marketing it'll have surrounding it and because the other guy has one. That's what makes it so fucking LAME. You take a lame gimmick and then compound it with an even worse console name. It's like a big failure sandwich.

At least the boomerang had relevance that didn't suck.

EDIT: Wasn't Sony being sued over the vibration feature in the dual shocks? If so the "removal" from the newer controllers could be an awesomely played copout.

Look this isn't about the reasons leading to Nintendo's failure. I'm talking about this case in particular. (I'm sure Nintendo has made a lot of mistakes that harmed them) When it comes down to it, what Sony did here totally comes off as a cheap, rip-off. They copied an idea but are making it available in what seems like a more limited functionality only to shoot back at Nintendo. Unless they have something substantialy new to offer with this whole "free movement" deal, they should not mess with it.

Vulpes_Callidus May 8, 2006 09:59 PM

Nah, you get me wrong, Metal Sphere, the "you" is aimed at a general audience, not specifically you. The joke was the only thing aimed at your comment, everything else was my own opinion. Apologies for the confusion.

TheReverend May 8, 2006 09:59 PM

Obviously from the linked article (thanks Grubdog!) we can see that the Wii remote and the PS3 controllers are completely different.

PS3 controller detects 2 things in 360 degrees, Acceleration & Tilt

Wii controller identifies controller position in 3D space at any given moment.

Mucknuggle May 8, 2006 10:01 PM

The vibration was probably removed because Sony got sued for using the technology. I don't think that they're allowed to use it anymore.

That was just recently pointed out. Also, they're different as in, one(Wiimote) seems to have a lot more capabalities than the other(PS3's controler) in that it offers actual 3D movement, vibration, and a speaker right on the remote for sound effects that have to do with movement and what not.

You talk about "educative speculation," which is exactly what I'm talking about. It's one thing to have videos of the Wii controller and the PS3 controller and praise or condemn on or the other. You have information from both sides and can make that educative speculation. It's another thing to have a video only of the PS3 and condemn it and praise the Wii when there is no video of Wii in action. I think you missed that. Of course we make many of our opinions here without personally experiencing what we're talking about. But we mostly have secondary information to back up those opinions. There isn't enough information to make an opinion about the PS3/Wii issue now. Tomorrow, however, we can make all the opinions and educative speculation we want.

Vulpes_Callidus May 8, 2006 10:12 PM

PS: The nuchuck attachment (the joystick add-on) for the Wii Remote has a gyroscopic sensor, not unlike the one in the PS3 controller.

But yes, can't wait till tomorrow when Microsoft and Nintendo have their go at it. And then two GFF forums will explode.

As for the controller issue, get over it, Sony might've gotten the idea form Nintendo but this isn't the end of the world. Its not the first time competitors took some ideas from their rivals.

Have a sense of humor will you? It's a gaming console, it can sound silly.

Vulpes_Callidus May 8, 2006 10:24 PM

From what I can tell, Gelb-2 is trying to say that the PS3 controller and the Wii Remote have NOTHING (verbatim) in common, while the Technophile is attesting that the PS3 controller's gyroscope functionality is a rip off the Wii Remote because of their similarities.

I'll have to side more strongly with Technophile (though you are now both being shitheads) particularly because of Gelb-2's decided escalation with his "fuck" post, and I can't really tolerate blatantly rampant crude behavior.

Secondly, I'd like to point out that the ability to sense in 3 dimensions, regardless of Gyroscopic technology, is SIMILAR in both the Wii Remote and the PS3 controller. Please do not tell me, Gelb, that the two have NOTHING in common.

Alright, the "ripoff" thing isn't about the exact technology used, it's about the IDEA and DIRECTION behind the alternate gameplay method. The fact that they are copying it is really irrelivant though, what IS relivant is that it's half arsed. They would have been better off not showing such a thing at all, so we'd all be talking about MGS4 instead of Wii.

Overall though, great looking games like MGS4 remain unaffected and awesome.

The only saving grace for Sony to guarantee a pre-order from me is if they promise tremendous improvement of PS1 and PS2 games in terms of graphics (like some sort of AA and up-converting resolution).

That would at least give me something else to fool around with come launch day (because I'm sure as hell not purchasing a ton of 60 dollar games, I'm waiting for them to be on the "used" shelf).

And I HAVE a bigass HDTV set. Even I'M dissapointed in Sony.

Kostaki May 8, 2006 10:59 PM

Haha, I'm not even going to wait until launch day myself. I've built up a good 100 game backlog so that I can sit around and bide my time while the first run bugtastic PS3s come out and rape people of their money. I will laugh merrily at their woes when they bitch about DISC READ ERROR IN HIGH DEFINITION and then two years later get me a decently priced near bug free console and some cheap bargain bin games.

I have to agree with you guys, gaming is becoming way too expensive as evidenced by these $400-500 console prices and $60 games.

It's becoming a hobby with budget needs akin to building muscle cars or getting a speed boat for weekend rides down the river.

Buying games like FF13 now is looking about as probable as me going down to a Barret Jackson auction and scooping up a '68 Barracuda.

And uh, we need to coin a fun nickname for the new PS3 controller. Playmote perhaps?

I don't even see why all you kids are complaining. Do you really think Sony cares if you think they're ripping off Nintendo? "Oh boy these kids are onto us. I make no qualms about it.... I am a Nintendo fan. Always have been, and if they continue as they have been I will continue to be. I write this to give you frame of reference.

But this isn't about Nintendo, or even Sony... This is about games. I have always wanted to buy a PS2. It's got great games, a huge catalog of em (especially if you count PSX games). I've never bought one though because of two reasons.
1. Too much money
2. Graphics that just didn't justify the cost to me. (not that the graphics are crap, just not quite good enough cause I HATE so much aliasing and poor textures)

But here is the bottom line: Am I willing to pay this much for these games?
The answer is NO. MGS4, FFXIII, and every other third party game will be ported when this thing flops because it is too dang expensive. And I shouldnt say flops because it will have a market.

High-end entertainment center hob-nobs. And how big is that market? It's big but not THAT big. I almost guarentee that this thing will sell out of the 400,000-800,000 or so units coming to the US alone for the fact that it is a Bluray player.

Remember how people are buying the PSP more for the protable screen (video, audio, net, photoviewer, etc.) than for the games? PS3 repeats this idea.

So I won't be buying the PS3. And in fact I have no desire to, unlike with the PS2 at launch.

FUCKING LOL.

And I agree we should just call the PS3 controller the PS3 Controller or Dual Shock 3. No gimmicky name schemes, please.

Kostaki May 8, 2006 11:12 PM

I don't even see why consoles ripping each other off is anything to bitch about anyway, considering each one pretty much steals from the other whenever they feel like it. PS started using Dualshock, and here comes Nintendo 64 with the Rumble Pack, and hay Microsoft releases with two analogs but ELSEWHERE and then the Saturn releases the controller that comes with Nights and has analog and then THEY ALL HAVE L AND R TRIGGERS and OH LOOK FOUR BUTTONS ARGHARGHARGHARGH.

The games and the total price on the consoles will dictate the necessity for the console. No one cares about stolen technology, as long as it's fun.

How about taking further PS3 discussion to the PS3 thread so my brain doesn't fry.

That's an order.

You can still use this thread for non-PS3 Sony discussion.

Buying games like FF13 now is looking about as probable as me going down to a Barret Jackson auction and scooping up a '68 Barracuda.

And uh, we need to coin a fun nickname for the new PS3 controller. Playmote perhaps?

Games used to be $70 a piece. Just 10 games and you've just spend $100 than you would buying games at $60. It really hasn't gotten more expensive. The one time cost of hardware is minimal.

I will laugh merrily at their woes when they bitch about DISC READ ERROR IN HIGH DEFINITION and then two years later get me a decently priced near bug free console and some cheap bargain bin games.

Patience wins again.

Hey, you stole my idea! To the letter. :lolsign:

Sad thing is, late-gen PS2 game releases will still probably be better than anything the PS3 sees for a long time (including a lot of games on the shelf now).

Stealth May 9, 2006 12:04 AM

Uh, most of those games look a lot better than PS2 gen stuff.

Forsakenzoul May 9, 2006 07:42 AM

I saw someone mention that they were primarily for supporting your old PS2 and PS1 memory cards, which of course would make perfect sense if it were true.

FatsDomino May 9, 2006 10:27 AM

That's not really off-topic. Any information you guys can find about obtaining this conference is completely okay for this thread.

http://www.gamespot.com/e3/e3live.html

They have the show streamable or downloadable with decent quality still. You have to be a subscriber there for high res content. I'm sure it's the same way over at IGN.

If anyone has any torrents feel free to post links.

Rock May 9, 2006 10:39 AM

You have to be registered even for the low res downloads.

Someone upload or torrent their high res version already, please.

Zip May 9, 2006 01:34 PM

if you want the lq version a free registration is enough.

I might have been impressed by a historical Japan war game if it had been remotely historical and realistic. I guess we'll have to stick to Odama which isn't a total loss.
