Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops [PSP]
Konami plans new MGS
Konami communicates the development of a new Metal Gear in the Hidechan Blog for PSP, which is to appear in the autumn. It takes place in 1970 after MGS 3, and history is in a connection with of MGS4. Big boss is the main character, and it concerns the structure of Foxhound. Duels via Wi-Fi are planned. This is great news. It will invlove Frank too, deinately. |
Well, you know that anything involving Frank is going to be a real furter. Deinately.
|
Holy crap, even though you don't have a link (and therefore I'll be waiting for confirmation), this would be excellent.
If anything, it'll make more people buy PSPs. BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA <----Evil Sony overlord laugh. |
OMG, I'm buying PSP for sure now. Thank you Hideo!
Just found this: http://pspcave.com/pspnews/latestnew...s_20060506737/ I don't see how Solid Snake can be a main character since he wasn't born in 1970. It will be part of the official continuity, which means no MGS fan can miss it. It will also feature squad-based gameplay, which means ordering NPC teammates around. Cool. "When ally soldiers die, they are gone for good". LOL, I bet it will change parts of the story if you make it through the game will all team members alive or all dead. Spoiler:
The connectivity features will probably be in a similar way to the MGA2-> Subsistence method. |
I'll probably wind up buying one sooner or later now because of this game. And while this is nice I really wish Kojima would unveil a new Z.O.E. game (I'd go buy a PSP tomorrow if he did that).
|
Well at least its not coming till 2007, at which point I'll probobly be able to afford one. I'm of course counting on the fact that they will lower the price of the PSP. Should be buckets of fun.
|
Haven't they lowered it already? I know I saw one place (Circuit City, I think) selling it for $200, but even that is still a little too expensive.
|
Heh. I'm still working on the BRC-026 part of MGA!!! Damn. Time to majorly catch up!
|
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, it's announced and confirmed!
Storyline is supposedly set before the first Metal Gear and after MGS3 Snake Eater. There's also supposed to be some online play. Scheduled for a Winter release. Might actually pick up a PSP now. http://psp.ign.com/articles/706/706563p1.html Some images at Ruliweb popped up. Looks like Eva, Paramedic, and some of the other MGS3 characters are playable. http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1655/435523ko.jpg http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/4038/43554wo.jpg http://ruliweb2.dreamwiz.com/ruliboa...e_psp&main=psp |
Crotch kick FTW.
|
All those shots with Eva and all the other ones with their MGS3 outfits must just be in the multiplayer mode.
I mean, I don't see how they'd pop up years later wearing the exact same things. |
Of course, it has to be multiplayer. I doubt Raikov survived MGS3.
|
God, it looks excellent! I haven't played Acid, but I've always wanted a proper Metal Gear Solid game on PSP.

AWESOME. Now im sure alot of people will buy the PSP. Norio Wakamoto's voice will be in it too!! It better be a badass character. When that day comes , It'll shit on the DS .
|
The presence of Eva, Raikov, and Paramedic are from the multiplayer mode and not the story mode. It's portable MGO with more characters! I'm definitely getting a PSP now.
|
Was a trailer released yet?
|
umm.. yeah it was.. i'll upload it. The one from e3, right?
|
upload that shit son! I haven't tried the KP site, but since the MGS4 trailer isn't working due to overload, I assume the MGPO probably doesn't work either. Besides, who wants to "stream"?
|
|
OMG, Greyfox! YES! The DGN style cutscenes look interesting. I like how Big Boss uses the Boss' speech to motivate his troops and command their loyalty.
"Head for the access point, if you know what I mean" |
Thanks Chato!
Cool how it explain how the FoxHound unit was created to stop the Fox unit. |
Yeah. it showed more of the features and extras for the psp . Im glad it didn't expose too much. At least not yet
|
Wow awesome trailer! This game looks like it'll be real good.
|
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzIS8JlKR8s&search=MPO
youtube link. Still looks cool. Wierd how he's still called "Snake" by PM..he's Big Boss now. EDIT: Is it just me or is the logo absolutely terrible. |
Thanks for the trailers! Man it looks good. Interesting though, is the story going to be told through storyboards/animated-comic, or FMVs? Seems like there's a mix so far.
|
I got around to see the 15 minute trailer. It's nice, and I thought the way they played with the release year was hilarious. Somehow, I've got a feeling controlling Raiden won't be an easy task trying to pull of fantastic moves as seen there, obvioiusly. More like taking 5 minutes to finish off one of those mini's. Why does he look like he stole the Casshern wardrobe! :tpg:
|
Wrong thread there, this is the PSP MGS: Portable Ops topic ^_^
|
Do you think they will include full-fledged voice acting in the game? I know the trailer features some, but I wonder if it will actually be included in the final product.
I really wish MGA used voice acting...is it just because of a lack of space on the UMD? |
Probably not a lot of voice acting, as seen from the comic type cutscenes in the trailer.
|
Holy hell that looks awesome. Aside from the Ghost Recon-esque squad thing, this is the Metal Gear game I was hoping for with Ac!d. At least Sigint refers to him as Big Boss. Everyone else is still calling him Snake. It's weird. But I guess it'd be weirder to hear "Big Boss? BIG BOSS?! BIIIIG BOOOOOOOSSSS!!!"
|
looks like hideo has done sony a favor and increased their sales by announcing this title i mean there are almost a dozen poeople here who have planned to buy a psp just for this game and honestly im one of em'.
THIS GAME WILL ROCK!!!!!!! |
Have we all forgotten about Portable Ops? The new trailer from TGS '06 is amazing! I came ten hundred times. The music, story, gameplay and voice acting are all mind blowing. This is the number 1 reason to own a PSP.
In case you 're too lazy to search for the trailer yourself: http://www.gametrailers.com/player.p...pe=mov&pl=game Spoiler:
"HOWLIN' TO THE NIIIIIIIIGHT!" god that theme is awesome. Anyone know who's directing this? It's obviously not Hideo because he's busy with MGS4. |
I'm telling you, that last scene with Naked Snake holding the another body and all the corpses, that sold it for me. Best trailer of TGS. When is this meant to be coming?
|
Man, how did I miss this? That was an awesome trailer! I love the music, it even rivals HGW's work for MGS4! Love that theme song, which I'm assuming is original. Of course the voice acting is outstanding too, and the characters... ahhhh! Gray Fox, and the Colonel! Now I have to buy a PSP for this game!
|
Good God man! That trailer isn't of this world. I'm really impressed with the quality of the game. The DGN style cutscenes are great. I can't wait to play this to see how all the characters and events fall into place within the MGS timeline.
|
Where are you guy's getting Grey Fox from? That ninja guy with the swords?
Spoiler:
Also Kojima says that there's a possibility of more MPO sequels due to the gap between MGS3 (1964) and Metal Gear (1995). I sure hope they do milk out Big Boss's story. It has so much potential. Big Boss on PS3 anyone? |
What I could go for are total remakes of Metal Gear 1 & 2 for the PS3... they just don't flow with the Solid and BB series.
|
Remake would be nice too but Kojima has said he never wants to go back to the original MG's, MGS4 is his last MGS so maybe the MGS team can remake it one day.
As for OP's it's looks amazing. |
Pre-order bonus available through EB Games and Gamestop, you get a MGO themed protective case for your PSP.

Well, I just got the new OPM in the mail today, and shit like this gets me excited for MGO:
Spoiler:
|
Nice, I think might pick up it. What demos are included in it for this month? Also, any interesting article to make it a worthwhile purchase?
BTW, the MGS PO soundtrack is listed for a December 20, 2006 release! I'm depending on Godai and #gamemp3's for the distribution of this one! Though, I might pre-order/order one depending on what this elusive first press bonus is. Can't wait to listen to the full version of the theme song. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=GFCA-52 |
There's a huge feature on the PS3, 34 pages worth, but the demos are close to useless. I swear, if I didn't have a free subscription, I'd be pissed for spending $7+ for it.
|
Is there going to be a US bundle with this? I've been thinking of picking up a psp for this and some other games.
|
Set to be released December 5th now, that's 1 week earlier than the original date!
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/8...penoninhz7.jpg http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mpo/index_en.html |
This is a question that I've really been wanting an answer to for some time now. Does MGS:PO online portion have PSP headset support? Since the game is so teamwork based, I would hope so.
|
IGN gave it a 9.0
Quote:
According to an interview with Ryan Payton, Associate Producer at Kojima Productions the game will take about 15-20 hours to finish. It'll take even longer if you do the all the sub missions. http://psp.ign.com/articles/747/747782p1.html BTW, check out the game's homepage. It's got some videos demonstrating the game's features. One of the online features that sounds intriguing is the ability to take your hole unit against another person's. Sounds kinda like a RTS thing, as you gotta pick what soldiers would be good at what positions. The digital comic cinematics look incredible too, meshed in with VA, SE, and a score totally different experience as opposed to just reading everything like a comic. I wonder, could this be the future of comics? From some of the scenes they showed, I'm guessing at one point Man, can't wait to pick up a copy. http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mpo/ |
Well, I've got to wait until Christmas until I can unwrap it and put it in my PSP. Thankfully Booster has come out with DevHook .51, which will allow me to play MPO without a firmware update. Woohoo!
|
Well this one game thats on my list for my PSP, cause lord knows it needs more good games.
On a side note thats more related to MGS3, did you guys know the Calorie Mate food item in the game is an actual snack product in Japan, and Keiffer Sutherland did commercial in Japan for it? (And its a parody of 24?) http://www.jlist.com/SNACKS/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tg8rQM3v3k&eurl= Thought you guys might find it interesting. The US should have imported this snack when MGS3 came out, I'm sure there are fans who wanna taste and see why Snake loves it so much. |
Ha, yes. I debated with myself whether to import some or not for a time...
|
That was one of the best commercials ever, lol XD
Man, I got MGS: PO and man, it is AMAZING!!! I've never seen a handheld game with such high production values before. Also Roy pretty darn cool, now I see why he's looked up to in the later games. |
I just picked it up today too (heh, and luckily my import PSP just came in the mail yesterday). Oddly enough EB didn't have any, they said the game isn't due out till next week (the game's original date). Heh, oh well, at least Future Shop's stock for it came in.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6258/dsc01036xz0.jpg Man, the cinematics are impressive, digital comic is an awesome medium for it! Just recruited my first soldier and the cinematic for it was beautiful, giving more insight on what the Boss meant about loyalty. Kind of a bummer that there's no VA for the codec or the ingame sequences though. Some of the spoken dialogue in the trailers are actually from codec or ingame sequences, which I guess were removed /cut, or never included in the final product (unfortunate). For gameplay, the controls are kinda awkward. I'm having so much trouble trying to aim/shoot/fpv and other basic stuff, but I'm gradually getting the hang of it. It's also weird to not have a second analog stick to control the camera, which is kinda annoying me right now. Though at least they give you the option to switch controls, which is exactly what I did. Switched the analog stick to be the camera and the D-pad to be movement, this set actually works a little better IMO (less hurt to the thumb too). Music is great as well, and gives a very similar atmosphere to MGS3. Cinematic pieces are pretty good too, but nothing that really stands out for me yet. Heh kinda just waiting to hear the theme piece used in the trailers. Definitely can't wait till the OST ships. BTW, regarding the Calorie Mate thing, I remember that commercial. Heh, it was quite the topic back in the MGS3 thread. At least we know Jack snaked during commercial breaks, heh. Actually, I've heard that the Calorie Mates are quite good and affordable (heh, I might consider importing some). |
Does the game get better once you have some more squad members? I thought the game was really weird and boring, but then again I haven't played too much yet.
This "capturing" feature. It's so silly. I can't find myself taking this game and the soldier interrogations serious. They should really have made Acid 3 instead. |
Something that kept me thinking about the ending of Snake Eater...

Oh shit, I just beat it. This easily justifies me buying a psp for this one game ;). I also bought Killzone and Lumines 1 the other day too. The presentation for the story is great, Hayter is at his best. The story is good, expect quite a few twists.
The gameplay is the but the controls feel really awkward after playing subsitance but I got used to them after a couple of hour (one can also customize buttons and there are several different layouts also helped). Also the boss fights are fantastic, I used a tranquilizer on all of them, and I got one or two bosses to join my side by just doing that. I haven't really messed around with online which was one of the greatest things about subsistance so I might give some immpressions later. |
Currenlty I'm at the medical facility, pretty cool. This recruiting thing really becomes useful once you start capturing the more useful units. Such as spy units that'll help you scout out weapons, or medic units that increase you hp and stamina regen rate. Just really disappointed that they couldn't have fit in more voice acting, especially for some of these non-cinematic text heavy exchanges between characters.

MGSPO story is better than SnakeEater, just finished it. Gameplay was awkward but for story i am sold:). |

That's really saying something huge. Are you sure? It is that good? Man, I'm just counting the days! |
Believe me, why i say this, is because it makes so many new revelations on existing SnakeEater. About true Volgins character and why he launched nuke etc.
There is much more which connects things with MGS4. Moreover the Script, dialogues are super tight specially in the end. New Bosses are very well made with proper and meaningful(to the whole series) backgrounds unlike MGS3. Expect lots of twists. Story picks up later by the end quarter. Specially the end, this game deserves proper polygon Cutscenes because the story itself feels epic in comic style. Snakeeater is just a 'part',this game makes SnakeEater complete..rest will be spoiler. So get it. I m sold. |

Snake Eater:
Mgs PO ,more info:
As for the game Mgs PO, there is some additional information but not something to go crazy about. I'm disappointed to find more ridiculous "fury/pain" types in this game. The thing that also bothered me were the missions, jeez after a while it gets boring (repeat, repeat) and i understand why hideo needs to repeat every goddamn thing that happened in snake eater but that too afterwhile gets annoying (this suppose to be a game for FANS..if you didn't play snake eater then you shouldn't play this one at all!) Andohyeah this just topped everything ridiculous:
As for closing comments, i expected MORE story devel. in this story, MORE about Big Boss.....andohyeah normally they should've explained why big boss send his son to his fortress...well, it DOESNT! I do love the comic scenes and music, but like i said not something to crazy about. I'm glad i borrowed the psp of my friend and downloaded the game..XD...cuz i won't be getting this one, it's just not important in the story line. (ohno there's a MR X...as we didn't knew:s come on!) |

Well got around to playing online, it's pretty fun. But more or less the same as MGO. However, I like how we aren't limited to just one special character (eg. all players on the map can start with Snake) per game. It's also neat to that you can play online with a whole team of 4 or just 1 (depending on how you set them up in the main game). This aspect of the game will definitely get more attention from players once they get better units (eg. bosses, as they might join your side, if you decided to tranq and capture them that is). Recruitiing via AP scan is really addictive, haha, I spent a couple last hours just walking around campus trying to find more recruits (managed to get an Ocelot soldier, which was the most unique I've gotten). And man, the different kinds of weapons you can get is sweet. The coolest one being the shield that those backup units use, that you can actually. Though you can't wield it with a gun, it's just so much fun ramming others while reducing the amount of bullets hitting you at the same time. |

|
I'm about 3 hours in and I'm liking it. But it just feels kind of empty to me, like its not really a main entry in MGS. Maybe its because of the comic book cutsenes. It lacks a certain Metal Gear essence. Maybe that feeling will go away in the future, I hope. I still want to see how this connects with MGS4.
|
Heh, apparently the hot topic on Gfaqs is how to unlock Ocelot and Eva in story mode, and so far no one is able to find them.
I wonder if its even possible at all.. |
I'm actually wondering if they're unlockable via a code that might come with the OST. As there's a First Press bonus for it, so that might just be it. Also, didn't MGA's ost come with some sort of code for the game too?
Here's the OST's tracklist, which I'll tag as it does appear to have some spoilers. Namely track 30, which I'm still trying to find out if it's true or not. Spoiler:
Also, RYU found a rip of the game's theme song "Calling to the Night" by Natasha Farrow. |
I found the game really frustrating and empty at first. As i said earlier the story will grow later, comic cutscenes will also grow on you with time and becomes much better by the end.
After first boss fight i got hold of gameplay. Now its breeze but still constant ration needs and dragging the soldiers to your partners or truck, is too inconvenient and frustrates me. |
Quote:
About recruiting soldiers, I usually trank two or more and drag them over to a buddies box and call the codec frequency. It is important though to know where to pick up good soldiers. Sometimes I pick up them just because they have good equipment like an rpg7 or an m4. If you want the best tech people I find to recruit the maintenance guys at the "plant" you will understand once you get there. |
Thanks for the tip it really works. Game needs time to understand better.
Anyways related to story id somone like to throw some light Spoiler:
|
Supposedly you unlock Gene by capturing 200 soldiers. The leading theory about Eva right now is that you either lay 100 magazines or you find her frequency somewhere. Ocelot is supposedly unlocked by beating the game with no alerts.

Maybe I'm just doing this wrong. -__- :wrong: |

Spoiler:
Rock: When i played multiplayer, i was shocked to see other players playing like breeze(Rolling, evading aiming sharply). I then realized that something is wrong with my skills. If they can thn i can too. By the end of the game, i got so expert that i killed last 2 bosses without dying and taking any health kits. Now i am able to kick some ass in multiplayer too. |
It's not even the controls I'm having trouble with. I can cope with them, however awkward they may be, but the whole concept of the game seems rather stupid and pointless to me. Most of the time I don't even know what to do next and recruiting new members is a pain in the ass, no matter how rewarding it might be in the end.
Maybe I'm just pissed off that they didn't make Acid 3. I loved those games since they were much more "portable" to me. Portable Ops is such a drag, I don't think it suits the PSP very well. |
Its actually mainly for multiplayer purpose. The importance of recruiting, one can realize in Multiplayer. Make your team and go for it!
|
is the GPS compatable with the US version of this game? i realy want to recrute solders via gps >.>
|
Yes the option is there. However, I don't think that peripheral is released yet, at least not overseas.
And man, online play is so much more fun when you got a team of unique characters. Yesterday I was having a blast with Snake, Null, Ocelot, and Eva. I know it might seem cheap, but everyone else seems to does the same thing (Null is bitch at close range with his Machete). Just one thing I don't like is that there isn't a quick reload button, seems like I always have to go through the whole clip before I can reload. BTW, does anyone else notice that you only get scored for playing RC (real combat) matches and not VR (virtual reality)? Kinda gay, cause if you got regular soldiers on your team and they die, they're dead for good. So best save before going online. |
My stamina level is at 1 pixel. And one step from Snake, completely disables him. Um, so what now? xD
|
Use the wait command. It should get some stamina back. Plus, you could use 3 waits, then go into a mission, quickly abort it, wait 3 times again, and repeat.
There's only a tiny penalty for going past Jan 1st, 1971, which is that you can't get Cunningham as a secret character. HOWEVER, you can just use the password JUNKER and unlock him, so whatever. Feel free to abuse the wait command. |
Haha, yea I had the same problem with Stamina at first as well. Heh, that was until I had discovered the Wait command.
I also suggest building up your Medic unit, as that way you can build it up so that it only takes one Wait to completely regen. Plus, they'll produce and boost up healing items in your inventory. |
Damn. That was easier than I thought. Without the Wait feature, I was going back to the hospital and stealing rations, and repeating the process until he was full again. .___.
Anyways, I finished off Python. Took me a while. I had two problems, either my health was initially low (and no health aids in my pack) or no more tranq ammo. Which for some reason, only spawns at an area 2/10 tries. Or am I just blind? Double Post: This game is getting annoyinggg >___> How do you make the enemy "freeze"? It works sometimes, is there a special timing? What the fux? Double Post: Sorry for triple posting. But how do I use Gazelle? The guy that puts the items back into the trunk without having to go back to the menu - or dropping items. |
You mean to send item back to the truck? As him you collect items and can send them back to the truck. The command for it is in the menu window, you'll notice that he gets the option to press R, which allows him to send items back to the truck.
|
How do I choke someone? Seriously, I've been playing for 16 hours and I still don't know. I've always gotten lucky and pressed some button. No weapons + Square. And what? ;___;
|
To choke someone (I don't think you can break necks or slit throaghts in this game) get behind them with no weapons and press and hold down square then tap it to knock the buggers out aka choke.
|
I just beat the game. Amazing ending. Amazing game. What I didn't notice was that
