Credit Cards
I just had an epiphany. Everyone needs a credit card sooner or later.
So what's a good card. I need one that has a cool background on it. Does Visa let you upload your images, or what. |
I doubt there is a credit card that allow people to upload their own image.
Unless bobo decides to make a GFF credit card? :O |

My credit card: http://cnxstudios.com/images/razgriz-card.jpg They don't let you use registered trademarks, or copyrighted images. But it wasn't too much trouble to cut out the copyright text, plus AC isn't easily recognizable outside the gaming world. Keep that in mind. |
Damn. I am so going to put my corporate logo on my credit card. I'll post it up when it comes in.
|
I have no credit card. I really should get one though considering how much stuff I order off of Amazon.ca.
|
I use this card called a GM Visa. I earn points towards buying a car from a company I may very well not buy a car from. I really need to get a new card.
Once some fucker in Quebec somehow got a hold of my credit info and maxed out the card (couple thousand). Fortunately my crediters have some kinda crack team of investigator types and they fixed up the whole deal. ='D |
Whatever you do, don't do business with Capital One. Their customer service barely speaks English, and you get ramrodded with charges from day one for shit you never knew existed.

Capital One cards either have stupidly high interest rates or nasty hidden charges, and they love to lure lower-income people in with introductory offers...only mentioning the 25% normal interest rate in 4-point MS Flyspeck Sans Serif. My first card was a Capital One card, and I paid it off and dumped it as quickly as possible when I got a lower-interest one. And Capital One's customer service really is horrible. They must spend all of their money on cute advertisments with Vikings. If you're a college student (or are going to college in the near future) and have at least some income, you'll probably get offers for "student" credit cards from various banks. They'll probably offer better rates than you can get with regular credit cards, and some come with halfway-decent perks, though you absolutely can't miss a payment with one (not that missing payments is ever a good idea) unless you want to pay a 30-40% penalty rate for a year. |
I got a credit card offer from my school. It was one of those, "get free pizza and a credit card!". Nice thing was that it has my school's logo and mascot on it.

I have two cards, but one of them is dead. I don't know why; it was delinquent for like 2 billing cycles before I paid it off completely, but after that, I couldn't use it anymore. I was happy with it because there were no fees or interest as long as I paid at least $10 on it a month. But, no longer. I wasn't too bummed because I have a second Capital One card. I don't have any problems with it. APR is high as fuck, but if you pay your shit off entirely every month it shouldn't be a huge deal. ZOMG had to pay $2 extra bux; who cares. |
I'm afraid using credit card. There are too many carders in the world.
|
I have a captial one but it's Visa Captial One. I have no problem with, I've looked at thier interest rate, and all thier actual binding contracts. I have had NO hidden fees and thier custermer support I've had no probelm with. This is my first credit card but all I use it for is for online expenses(like my website) and World of Warcraft. And as well when I went to get paypal and using my savings account as well.
But then again, you can't have interest off of 0 bucks when you instantly transfer your 15 bucks for WoW using thier direct payment method. |
I am bound and determined to fight against ever owning a credit card. I think it's stupid that you either have to have a credit card or you can't get the item at all. Some people won't even accept debit or checks. Frankly, I want to stay out of debt as much as possible (except the stupid loans the college suckers me into b/c of room and board).
However, I have heard of a card that does allow you to have a choice of a few images to put on it. I'm not sure which one that is though. However, the site listed in an earlier post may be the one you're talking about. |
That's what debit cards are for; so you don't go into debt but have most of the power of a credit card. Then again, you can just as easily go into debt by overdrawing your checking account.
The key is self-control. |
I believe money's not as fun in card from. But this whole "Pick your own image" thing is very appealing.

You can use your debit card as a credit card if it is of a major credit card company. For example, my bank is 5/3rd bank, but my debit card is still somehow a Visa. I can use it anywhere I could use a Visa credit card, I can also use it as an ATM card. When I use it, the money is deducted directly from my checking account.
The drawback is that if I have not yet been paid and want/need something immediately, or have deposited a check that may take a few days to clear, I will be stuck if my checking account is low. That's when a credit card comes in handy. But too many people look at it as "free money" and go apeshit with it and don't worry about the consequences. Or perhaps I'd rather have something like a monthly bill go to my credit card, just to be fairly confident I will never overdraw my checking account. |
Yeah, the key is self control. It isn't credit cards that are evil at all, it's more of our human nature that takes control.
|
Well, Visa just came out with a debit card that's supposedly accepted wherever a credit card is accepted. Don't know anyone who has one though. Oh wait, Eleo has one.
|
Man, what the turd.
If you are going to sign up for the custom Visa, don't do it in Opera. The image editor won't even load, and you won't be able to go back and create a custom image. You'll have to wait for them to send you the card first, with the account number so you can access their online services. Fuck this nerd. |

Besides the fact that they purposely target poor people, they also are notorious for early brand recognition antics such as sponsoring the Barbie cash register toy. If you look really closely, you'll see that Barbie is swiping a Capital One card when she makes her little Barbie purchases. That's just wrong somehow. Also, I would highly recommend NOT GETTING A CREDIT CARD...EVER. Unless you're extremely disciplined and you're certain that you can pay the balance off in full every month. You can do anything with a debit card that has a Visa or MasterCard logo on it that you can do with an actual credit card. |

Hmmmm, well maybe it's just me because I never had a problem at all with Captial one but then again as it gets charged as soon as I see it on my online statement, I pay it up before the end of the month. Thus no late charges, no nothing. Can't have interest off of 0 dollars.
|
Dammit, I wish I needed another credit card. I'm a customization freak, and this is just the sort of thing I was looking for when I first applied for my card a few years ago.
But shit, look at that nasty 11.38% APR after the first year on all those plan choices (excepting the "consolidator")! Mine is like, 2% or something fairly low (it was 0%, but then I made a late payment or two :(...). |
What card is that?... those are great interests
|
I'm a debit card user myself... although it isn't as safe as a credit card (if someone steals it, they have access to your account as some places don't bother going through the pin number punch in), but if someone steals your credit card you can cancel it immediately. Although I think you can cancel the debit card too. I don't ever want to get in a situation like that.
One of the pros of using debit is that you can view everything online. It's really easy, and purchases that have not been received will appear as if they are so you know in the worst case scenario just how much money you have left. Deposits can be slow though. But you don't have to go through paying off bills with checks - they're already paid for. I have a Visa debit, and I use it just like a credit card on most sites, like Amazon. |
If you got Capital One, don't do business with Chase or MBNA either. Both companies keep upping my limits, but also upping my interest rate. MBNA had me up to $10,500 credit line, but a 24% interest rate, and I HAVE GOOD CREDIT. Never missed a payment, never been late, I have large amounts of available credit too.
American Express is awesome, but it isn't taken in a lot of places. Right now they got me at $22,000 with a 12% rate and 3.99% rate for transfers FOR THE LIFE OF THE TRANSFER. On top of that I got a cool clear/blue card too. (I got the Blue Cash). It also pays 5% back on gas which is awesome these days. |
Hey SN, is that 5% a default for all Blue memebers or is there anything special I have to do to activate it? I'm driving cross-country twice this summer and 5% would be a huge perk over the usual 1%.

I have been thinking of getting a credit card lately. I am somewhat confused though.
I get along fine with just my debit card, and the only reason I am thinking of getting a credit card is because I have heard that it is important to establish good credit. My question is, can you really get along without a credit card? For instance, say I get out of college and decide to get a car. Don't the dealerships or sellers require that I have good credit before I drive off with a car? Doesn't buying a house require the same thing? If I have never had a credit card, and hence no credit, how can I enjoy these things? Is it possible to make large purchases, or take out any loan for that matter, without first establishing credit? Or is it enough to show proof of employment or an appropriate income for the purchases in question? |
Well, if you can afford to pay a car cash, you don't really need credit. But yes, it's important to establish good credit, especially if you don't want to end up with huge interest rates on your mortgage or other loans.
You can take out loans without credit, but banks usually require you to have a stable job, plus they charge a lot of interest. Also, you probably won't be allowed to take out too much at first go. Remember, paying off loans establishes good credit as well. |
I used to have a Visa debit, but after changing banks, I lost the logo on the debit card. I have a separate Visa credit card now, along with a normal debit card from my new bank, and my name doesn't appear on that one.

I kinda like BLUE from American Express.
