Legos

1 Attachment(s)
Some of the things you can make with legos border on archtectural wonder, but mostly though, its just cool. I used to play with legos when I was younger, and every once in a great while I'll mess around with them again.

If I had a large place to work with, and money to burn, I wouldn't mind building stuff again with them. The best thing I did that wasn't a pre-made set (That you'd buy in the store) was a model of Junon, complete with moving Sister Ray Canon.

How about you?

Kilroy Mar 3, 2006 08:21 AM

I haven't made anything original in Lego, sadly. However, I was immensely tempted when Lego made that little program where you could built and design your own models and then buy the bricks for it. I could have made some great Star Wars things... Perhaps I should look into it someday.

Infernal Monkey Mar 3, 2006 08:46 AM

The most I could get out of Lego was taking the heads off the people and flicking them around this awesome Lego Town mat thingy. It was a bit freaky though, they have such gigantic smiles. Whenever I attempted to make something, it'd just become a big multi-coloured cube of death. I eventually sold it all in a garage sale. And now it's so expensive, I see these cool looking pirate themed sets, and they're like $50 each. =|

Lego is totally awesome. If you like building and being creative, be sure to check out www.brickshelf.com

The stadium is awesome. I watched a documentary on how it was built and transported to LEGOLAND Germany only recently.

Musharraf Mar 3, 2006 11:07 AM

Back in the days I built a whole fucking lego city! Too bad I didn't take any pictures :(
Oh and some years ago I went to Legoland in Denmark and it was pretty awesome. I'll go to Legoland Germany soon, too ^.^

DeLorean Mar 3, 2006 12:57 PM

I have the huge pirate ship! I built it when I was 8, then it fell off the table, and took me another 30 hours to build it. Horrible memory.

The Plane Is A Tiger Mar 3, 2006 02:58 PM

My most impressive original creation was a rather spiffy castle with a drawbridge that worked on one of those string cranks. I have a massive LEGO collection, but I tend to just stick with building armies of strange robots rather than making any large scale projects. I haven't done much with them in awhile, but after buying some cheap Megaman X figures the other day I did create a LEGO Armored Carrier for Vile that doesn't look half bad.

typ44 Mar 3, 2006 03:34 PM

Those are some impressive things that you could do with Legos. Too bad I never was that creative and I always followed the manual.

for anybody interested here is the link http://www.lego.com/eng/create/digitaldesigner/

personally i find the brick sets in the official program a little limiting. for those of us who cant afford to buy gobs of real bricks and dont mind making completely virtual models http://ldraw.org/ is a great resource.

XerxesTheMighty Mar 3, 2006 07:42 PM

For me, this takes the cake:

Son of Wiseness Mar 3, 2006 07:57 PM

Too bad I don't have any photos of the big Star Wars ship I built. It took me three hours to build it.

Dekoa Mar 3, 2006 08:02 PM

I still have most of my legos. I haven't really build anything note worthy but that is because I had such a limiting collection.

With this though I plan to make many things. You shall see me very happy now. Thanks for the Links and good post.

Edit: Wow I see what you mean by the first one. I think I shall use the second one to build models then order bricks that I need.

Acro-nym Mar 3, 2006 10:06 PM

My brother's the one who actually builds stuff with Legos, although he hasn't done so in quite some time. I could build things... I'm just lazy. I would to point out, though, that I am quite impresses with the kinds of things the Technic pieces allow. Knees!

Snowknight Mar 3, 2006 10:22 PM

Holy fuck; I don't know what's more insane: that church or the soccer stadium.
But, to the topic now, I never owned Legos as a child. This is probably because I didn't much like building things; due, in turn, to my dislike for having to destroy what I made after making it. (With younger siblings, things don't last long. At least, they didn't for me.)
I do distinctly remember that my dentist--in New York--had legos for children in his office. Out of boredom waiting for my examinations to begin, I would always create something with them. The best I ever did (in 45 minutes' time) was a castle keep type thing. It made me wish that I had Legos when I was younger, though >_<

Tama8-chan Mar 3, 2006 10:35 PM

whoa! Lego Stargate for teh WIN =O

Rydia Mar 3, 2006 10:39 PM

I rather like those pictures of the lego stadium and church. I've never built anything with legos before, so those are impressive.

Agent Olive Mar 3, 2006 10:49 PM

Christ, that stadium is amazing. I love Legos.

nanami chan Mar 4, 2006 12:37 AM

LOL! You have to have a lot of legos to make some of those things!

nazpyro Mar 4, 2006 02:25 AM

Holy crap, those are amazing. I need to get rich and buy exorbitant amounts of Legos for the sole purpose of constructing something just as ridiculously awesome, like a life-size Jack Bauer or Jesus Christ.

Chaotic Mar 4, 2006 02:39 AM

I wish I was more into Legos... Yes, they're uberly pimp and awesome, but I don't have the time to sit down and connect little blocks together to make something amazing. Either that, I just don't have the creativity for it.

Anyway, the pictures are amazing. I really like that church one.

Lours Mar 10, 2006 02:50 PM

Quite fun harpsichord :

Yes, it's a legos' harpsichord and it is playable :fish:

Spatula Mar 10, 2006 08:49 PM

Well now, to post things that I actually DID make which are pretty much stock stuff of the old SPACE POLICE II series back in about 1993.

I still have them sitting on a bookshelf. I did dismantle them and left them like that for the longest time, but I was bored and rebuilt them all one day in about 3-4 hours.

Eleo Mar 10, 2006 08:58 PM

I'd like a custom-made Dick Cheney lego statue.

Kaiten Mar 10, 2006 09:10 PM

I have a pretty kick ass spaceship I made (I used to use Legos for HOURS), too bad I don't have a digital camera to show it off.
I was really good at Legos, I could work with whatever you gave me and create a masterpiece.

Cyantre Mar 10, 2006 09:53 PM

Legos, are by far the best childhood toy... EVER.

Well, maybe, but they definately do bring out the engineer out in all of us. It's fun to see how weird of a tower one can make before it falls over.

You mean the SDF-1? I don't know... the cockpit area (the topmost part) looks different, and I remember there being a gap between the two long protruding 'arms'. It looks different. Maybe its one of those 'inspired-by' designs?

I have a 20 gallon bin full of legos, a bag of built legos (which by now probably needs extensive repairs), and an actuall lego drawer storage device thing filled with legos too. If I had the room to put finished sets I would probably try and build as many of the old sets that I could.

The new space sucks, too much StarWars. I liked when they were original and had Space Police, M-Tron, BlackTron, and Ice Planet. Every guy in my grammar school must have owned at least one Ice Tunnelator and could build it with their eyes closed. =P

I still can And I do miss the space police as well as the mining sets. your right though ther is too much starwars crap out there right now, They havent come out with anything new for awhile, they need to go back to short term projects like the sub sets they had for awhile, (now discontinued) also the star trek sets (I'm a trekkie so... yeah)

I wonder if it dials like in the show?

I found another awesome lego thing:

Found on deviantArt

GarretThe Thief Mar 14, 2006 12:36 PM

That is pretty cool. took me a second to get it but hey i'm tired so...
and the inner ring on the gate dosent look like it is attached to anything, it looks like the chevrons are keeping it in place, so it can rotate freely.

I like Firefly, but I would still rather they make something original than just design something already made. Originality made Legos fun because you got to use your imagination. Almost everything Lego is either Harry Potter, StarWars, or Bionicle... which isn't too bad, but those aren't true Legos, those are more Technic Legos.

GarretThe Thief Mar 14, 2006 01:03 PM

I agree, the new lego basicly makes you follow the guidlines of whatever it is you bought wheres the older sets you could mix and match all the diffrent sets together and make something compleatly original, i used to make almost whole citys, (15\15ft room)

and a correction on my earlier post the inner wheel is not held in by the chevrons but it extends into the outer ring where it sits nicely in there and could more then likly turn with minimal trouble

Cyantre Mar 14, 2006 01:07 PM

All of the different sets were great in the past because they let you use your imagaination. StarWars and Harry Potter already have a story, so when you play you're pretty much just following along with the story already laid out for you with slight variation.

With the castle and space sets before you created the story and the imaginary play was just better. They should rerelease those old sets.

Admiral Amara Mar 14, 2006 01:17 PM

I have no pictures of my lego creations to upload, which is sad - however, since I'm not an obsessive Lego collector, I had limited resources to work with. I once build a three-decked Star Trek style ship, roughly the size of a Defiant class vessel, with a crew of 25+. I'd color-coded the officers and crew members' uniforms. The bridge was a double-bridge, and I'd contructed a "turbo lift" that went from the bridge deck to the main deck. There was a double-open hanger bay at the front, with a custom-made shuttle inside, a bar in the middle, some measure of spartan quarters, a full Engineering area in the back with the Warp Core, Captain's quarters, a meeting room, a transporter room, and the bottom deck was the weapons deck with the primary weapons systems and stuff. It never got fully completed, mostly because I ran out of flat pieces for the floors on the main deck, but hey.

why I suck:
Not only was it left unfinished, but it no longer exists, either. When it was being built, I was unable to create a uniform color scheme, given my limited resources. :(

I think I've got pictures back home, I'll look next time I'm there.

GarretThe Thief Mar 14, 2006 01:34 PM

Thats awsome I hope you find them cause I want see this ship. it sounds like a lot of work went into it

Yeah, it was a fun project, and took a lot of time, mostly because I didn't get marathon sessions with it often (attending school, having a job, maybe a life). I'll see what I can do about getting some of the shots I took of it.

LJ, those are absolutely awesome! I think the Stargate takes the cake though. That is genious. Do you guys remember that Lego guitar that surfaced on the net a while ago? This is one of the best things made of Lego i have ever seen. this thread makes me miss the good ol' days of playing with Lego ;__;

GarretThe Thief Mar 14, 2006 02:21 PM

I know what you mean. I had to give my lego up a few years ago... that was a sad day in history (tear)
