Separated Sticky and Normal Threads

I added a little hack that does this. Do you guys like it on or off?

Rockgamer Apr 30, 2006 05:29 PM

I like it on. It makes it easier to tell where the new posts begin, and it puts more focus on the stickied threads as well (to me, anyway).

seanne Apr 30, 2006 05:41 PM

I must say I prefer them to be unseparated. And why isn't the 'Sticky' part bolded anymore? It was a lot easier to tell them apart when they were.

Franky Mikey Apr 30, 2006 07:00 PM

It's cool, now everyone can clearly see which threads they are supposed to skip over. :)

Kaiten Apr 30, 2006 07:29 PM

Could you make the separation smaller? Eight pixels would be perfect, small gaps look better.

Sarag Apr 30, 2006 08:49 PM

I like it so much that I decided to mention it in two threads. good job Miles.

Soluzar Apr 30, 2006 09:06 PM

It's cool. Not strictly necessary, but not in any way detrimental. It's a nice feature.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Apr 30, 2006 09:58 PM

Great little addition. Thanks, Miles.

knkwzrd Apr 30, 2006 10:05 PM

It's pretty much flogging a dead horse by now, but nice work.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Apr 30, 2006 11:02 PM

I don't particularly like it, actually.

Maybe if the gap were a little smaller, it would look better. But as it is, I'm not too keen on it.

Sorry Miles. =/

Miles May 1, 2006 02:27 AM

Hmm... Some people like and and others hate it. I'll see if I can make it smaller.

Big fucking deal.

You being on staff is a complete paradox to me.

But anyways, Miles - maybe you could try a little bar or something? That would probably be a lot less obtrusive.

Bigblah May 1, 2006 09:51 AM

I reduced the bar to half its size.

This thread is as necessary as looking for a thermometer when your house is on fire. Who the hell cares if there's a fucking inch of space between sticky and normal threads?

Fjordor May 1, 2006 09:51 AM

I like the decreased spacing Blah. (thought it was Miles at first) Good job.
Not too obvious and/or gaudy, but still there.

Actually, I was happy to see there was an explanation about it, and someone actually CARED to ask us if we liked it or not.

Frankly, I am extremely appreciative of the gesture. I know you probably don't think it's important to see how people like the layout of their forums, but as a member, I feel better knowing that someone gives a shit.

And Blah, it looks perfect now, actually. I really like it. No complaints~ I just hope everyone else finds it acceptable too. =/

And THANKS. <3

Musharraf May 1, 2006 10:35 AM

Well whatever, you see, in my opinion there are more important things to do than adding a fucking line between sticky and non-sticky threads. It's not like this is changing our forum layout to some more or less important degree. Sorry, you know I'm a passionate human being, don't take everything I say so seriously.

Eleo May 1, 2006 11:08 AM

I have to say I'm indifferent. Never accidentally looked at a Sticky as a real thread; brain tunes Sticky threads out nowadays.

Can't say it's a bad addition, though.

Miles May 1, 2006 11:08 AM

Mushy. If you'd like to see other things done then let me know what they are. Just remember, I'm pretty limited on what I can do since I don't have very much coding experience. I can, however, install hacks and follow instructions on adding code to specific places. Thats how things like the arcade got installed. Until blah or bobo come around to help me I'll continue digging around for other little things to add on just to make this place a little more interesting.

Musharraf May 1, 2006 11:31 AM

Yeah okay sorry I shouldn't have said that. Nevermind, want some ice-cream? =D

Kaleb.G May 1, 2006 01:28 PM

This is good, but I'd prefer to see a different display of sticky threads entirely. What I envision is something where when a thread is made sticky, it doesn't actually keep it at top, but it makes a "shortcut" to it at the top for easy access and viewing. This way, the sticky threads will still be inline with other threads as to not be easily passed over, but we'll have the shortcuts at top to draw attention to them.

For example, something like this.

This is actually a pretty mint idea. It gives the impression that these topics listed at the top of the forum are a little more important than the rest of everything else. And it also allows room for the actual threads coming up, unhindered.

It looks nice and clean, if you ask me. Is there any chance of this happening?

value tart May 1, 2006 02:21 PM

I like what we have now, but I like what Kaleb posted even better. It makes the stickies look like announcements without eating part of the front page.

Rydia May 1, 2006 04:32 PM

It's a helpful addition and lets the threads stand out a bit more. The smaller line was a nice change as well.

That's also a good idea, Kaleb. I wouldn't mind seeing something like that on individual forums.

FatsDomino May 1, 2006 07:36 PM

Kaleb's got a good idea. I just worry that some thread titles might be too long to fit in those spaces. I'm sure it would be flexible enough if used.

Good stuff, guys.

Eleo May 1, 2006 11:18 PM

Kaleb stole his idea from the Americans.

But yeah, it uses less vertical space the way he showed it.

Duminas May 2, 2006 12:17 AM

If space is such a concern, why not dump the topic creator's name off the stuck announcement titles in the new proposal? I honestly don't see those as being that important, as far as these go (ignoring their position), and their removal would allow more space for announcements.

...Or just drop it to 2~3 a row and that'd do the same thing. I like that idea a bunch, either way.

Kaleb.G May 2, 2006 01:46 AM

Some modification of my concept would be fine. I think last post time would be a fair replacement for topic starter, or you could just keep things strictly to the title.

One thing that I would like to have implemented in this idea (and that I even display in my image) is the ability to set the order that the stickies are displayed in, so that it isn't determined solely by last post time. I don't know if vB keeps track of when threads get stickied, but ordering them by this attribute would be a simple way of accomplishing my wish. To reorder, simply unsticky the threads and resticky them in the desired order.

They'll be sorted by post date (as this is the default behaviour). Is it normal to have more than 4 stickies in any one thread? I ask this because I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make vB jump to a new row in the template bits if a certain condition has been met. I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing, but...

Mucknuggle May 2, 2006 08:26 PM

It doesn't really bother me either way. The separation is fine.

Sorry for the sorta-double-post.

Alright, just so I can confirm, is this OK, Kaleb/others?
...The attachment, that is. It's a screenshot of how this looks "live".

If so, I'll package up the code and PM it to you so you can dump it in Mod Hut for someone to play with or post it here or whatever.

Kaleb.G May 2, 2006 09:09 PM

You would need to make sure that each sticky thread is listed both at the top as well as inline with the rest of the threads.

Duminas May 2, 2006 11:40 PM

That is done.
I have sent you a PM with the file for installation of this mod. Ignore the odd spacing issue on the right side of the stuck threads--that won't affect a normal installation (it is caused by the Moderation Column's display being disabled, though it looks to always appear for admins). It will drop all stickies on one line, and put announcements above them.

To see what it is now, check this (newer) attachment~

Kaleb.G May 3, 2006 12:57 AM

Looking good! I'll talk this up with staff.
