Russian Mario

No idea how old this is, or if it's made its circulation through here before, but I thought this was wicked:

The mushroom was my favorite part.

Oh man, that was pretty damn cool. I would have never expected seeing Mario like that (I was halfway thinking this was gonna be one of those Soviet Russia jokes).

I think so. Whether or not either (or both) is a parody I'm not sure.

SemperFidelis Apr 27, 2006 07:32 PM

Quite scary. I guess the goombas were the capitalists or something.

Mobius One Apr 27, 2006 08:04 PM

Cool. Eight thumbs up!

Helloween Apr 27, 2006 08:05 PM

Great video. I think they need to make a mario game like that one day.

Shenlon Apr 27, 2006 08:13 PM

woah a bad ass mario. This one's a much better view than that retardo sonic flash.

Spike Apr 27, 2006 08:39 PM

There was something about that that really weirded me out. Good flash animation though.

Neogin Apr 27, 2006 08:46 PM

Ah, nice flash. It kept me entertained. I loved the animation..

YeOldeButchere Apr 27, 2006 10:14 PM

Hey, that actually was entertaining! Nintendo should make some sort of serious Mario game like that once. With guns, booze, cigars and hookers.

Luxo Apr 27, 2006 10:46 PM

I think it is based off someone's comment about how Mario was full of communist propaganda. All the stuff you saw in the video are things that were thought to be promoting communism in Marioo Bros., like the red star flag.

odi_et_amo7 Apr 27, 2006 10:47 PM

The title of the song in the flash animation is Farwell to Slavania, also know as Slavic Farewell. I've played it before with our town's community band. I just thought I'd mention this since the title wasn't in the credits.

^.^

Interesting and stylish. Some of the animation was a bit off but overall it was pretty interesting.

Although I'm wondering if "Mario" is a name ever given to a Russian.

nazpyro Apr 28, 2006 01:38 PM

That's pretty badass. I liked it too. It somehow reminds me of another badass Mario image from a while ago:

dude, that's awesome art, dark mario, who'da thunk? got any more? :)

Furby Apr 28, 2006 06:42 PM

That was pretty coo. I'm going to pass it on.

Para Apr 28, 2006 10:45 PM

Was this based of a picture of Russian Mario with something about revolution?

Malmer Apr 29, 2006 07:56 AM

I love the style! The harsh universe, the animation and the music - everything! Thanks for sharing.

Mario IS communist.

captain_eddy May 7, 2006 09:25 AM

Wow really likeds it, espacially the mushroom bit.

DJ Gear May 7, 2006 09:15 PM

That was great! I especially liked the "distressed" pattern that was applied to the animation. Really well done.

Synthesis May 7, 2006 10:50 PM

Cool video. I really liked the somewhat militaristic style of music used. Mario is a firm believer in Gorbachev's perestroika. Since both the release of Super Mario Brothers and Gorbachev's initial planning coincide (1985).:judge:

Kilroy May 8, 2006 08:05 AM

Cool. I also thought it would be one of these "In Soviet, Mushrooms eats you!"-jokes, but I was pleasently suprised!
I'd honestly buy a mature Mario the second it hits the street. Not because the 'kiddy' Mario is shit or anything, but if Nintendo ever made a Mario like this (Well, without communist propaganda, of course) that'd be so extremely awesome, it would be impossible to spell...

Krelian May 8, 2006 12:13 PM

Heh, that was pretty damn good. Shame it didn't display properly in Bon Echo though.

I still prefer that one flash movie where it's all sprites and backgrounds from the original Mario Bros., and Mario's replaced with a huge version of himself with Lenin's head. He's walking on the bridge towards Bowser, who promptly grabs the axe and jumps into the lava. In the next room, Toadstool says her usual thing while Mario approaches, shortly before conjuring up an axe herself and jumping into a nearby pit of fire. Funny stuff, shame I can't find the link :(

Watts May 8, 2006 01:47 PM

That video was a fine piece of Soviet propaganda. So even the commies got Nintendo back then eh?!

Dee May 21, 2006 12:40 AM

I didn't know goombas had that much blood in them. Poor goombas. Funny flash nonetheless.
