"Real 3D" Hologram

I don't know how many of you have seen this but I stumbled on it tonight. It's frickin' cool. The Japanese have done it once again! Damn I can't wait until this technology is perfected and in our homes.

Cool. Now that is awesome.

I'm just concerned about other kids whose perception of reality and made-up reality is crossed, that's all. :\

Kaleb.G Mar 3, 2006 01:59 AM

This looks great. Are there any video links on that page? I find it hard to navigate.

Single Elbow Mar 3, 2006 02:01 AM

Here's another that's also made by Japan, if anyone still didn't see.

Personally, that thing's cool.

Shonos Mar 3, 2006 02:02 AM

So I see the word plasma mentioned in there.. How dangerous is this thing to others? Am I going to burn my hand if I stick it in the middle of the hologram?

Fjordor Mar 3, 2006 02:02 AM

Neat indeed. However, the required power consumption of such a device appears to make it nothing more than a very expensive novelty for many many years. Let us not forget that the lasers are probably very dangerous to mess with, and as such, any interaction with such displays will be very hazardous to someone's health.
I was waiting for someone to develop such a device like this, with lasers heating air... I just didn't know how it could be done. ;_;

Megalith Mar 3, 2006 02:08 AM

It projects ping pong balls into the air.

The Japanese have done it again.

In other news, Asians own the planet but we don't know it yet.

TOTALLY 3D HOLOGRAPHIC PONG

WAVE OF THE FUTURE

GET YOURS TODAY

Eleo Mar 3, 2006 02:28 AM

More like holodeck coming soon.

That would be so cool, if the video games in my lifetime reached a holodeck point. I want to have a realisitc lightsaber duel. Or maybe just get laid by the perfectly crafted holobitch that meets my exact specifications.

masamune_3 Mar 3, 2006 01:15 PM

Looks pretty sweet, but it looks like it still may need some work to get more complex.

Diversion Mar 3, 2006 01:33 PM

Not at all Masamune, all new technology is introduced in its most advanced state that we will ever see it: this is the best it will get.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Mar 3, 2006 01:58 PM

Ah, thanks for finding me this link again. Someone had pointed this out to me and then my browser crashed.

Funny you should mention Lightsabers, since I saw this exact article in the blog for Master Replicas, who make the force fx lightsabers. They were saying that it would probably be possible in a couple of years to be able to make "real" lightsabers. I'm not too sure how "real" they were expecting it to be.

Megalith has a point, they should use this to make 3-D Holographic Pong. I mean, the sooner we get started developing Holographic video games, the better off we'll all be.

I plan to be around for a long time. And don't tell me you wouldn't want to play holographic pong! Or maybe holographic Pacman or Tetris...hmmm... Cool vids Fyodor.

wishfire Mar 3, 2006 07:33 PM

As awesome as holographic pong would be, I have to admit that my vote would be for the holographic Tetris.

But in retrospect, that thing has to give off some chemical or such that isn't exactly the most wonderful thing for our health, no? But this will be years before it's implemented in anything, so that shouldn't be that much of a problem now (unless you're a developer).

I read the related article, and someone commented that it is actually heating the nitrogen and oxygen into expending plasma. So it isn't given off chemicals per say, but it may alter the state of what is already there.

I wish there is video of it though.

Fyodor D. I seem that somewhere before, but it didn't use to have videos. :D It looks awesome, where is major?

I think what Masamune was trying to say was that we have to wait for the technology to become more Sophisticated. Right now it is the most advance, however it really isn't so sophisticated. When technology advances farther, it becomes more sophisticated.

I like this idea, but does the Butterflies picture kinda remind you of the TRON movie when the bad guy is talking to the MCP on his desk? No? oh well then it's just me I guess.

Yggdrasil Mar 3, 2006 10:38 PM

Wow, when I saw the picture at first I thought it was a photoshopped document. Its great and all that we have this hologram machine, just to bad we probably won't be benefittng from this for a while. Now its just a matter of waiting until we get practical hologram machines to hit the market...

Yeah, I was shocked by the existence of videos as well.
BTW, the Major is present now. ^_^

WHAT THE HELL! Where can I get one and how much do they cost??

Fjordor Mar 4, 2006 03:33 AM

Actually, the biggest problem with the system is that it requires an external projector to project the background onto the fabric. So, so much for the idea of invisi-camo.

Yeah I figured that after I looked over the article again. Now I think I can never complete my ultimate MGS cosplay in my lifetime.

DCII764II00 Mar 4, 2006 03:37 AM

That invisble suit is amazing... I think it's true... Technology will be I greatest triumph and our biggest downfall.. Oooo I can't wait to hear what happens when the military gets a hold of this eh?... That's worse than camaflouge...

Hey, maybe when it comes out you can go buy it in your flying car!

Von Mar 4, 2006 04:04 AM

Sigh.. we have the world's most advanced technology and the first thing we think about is gaming.

Fjordor Mar 4, 2006 04:07 AM

Yeah.
Because life sucks.
And rather than coming to terms with this fact, people would rather just escape it in more and more immersive custom worlds.

DCII764II00 Mar 4, 2006 05:37 AM

Truth be told, most of the world's best inventions come from fantasy and immagination.. So when an invention occurs, you could kinda say.. We're doing exactly what Fyoder D. is saying...

"OOoOOOoooOO.. Wasn't that just cosmic.. that was so deep... Im like so lost!" - The Great Stewie Griffon

Fjordor Mar 4, 2006 05:43 AM

Is english your first language?

Because it seems that linguistic subtleties are beyond you.

I said that we tend to turn inventions into things to assist in our escape from reality. That is different from inventions in general being inspired by "fantasy and immagination."

I also feel like being argumentative right now.

DCII764II00 Mar 4, 2006 06:02 AM

Seems I ashed my cigar in the wrong ashtray... lighten up dude.

Good deduction, captain obvious, poor post interpretation, though.

Atomic Duck Mar 4, 2006 03:16 PM

Sweet. I really hope they speed up production of that hologram technology, but that was freaking rock to play games like that.

Oh sweet Jesus why didn't I think of that! Flying cars with Holo-Navigation system and active camouflage! The future is looking more bright everyday.

Acro-nym Mar 4, 2006 07:51 PM

Whoa. That thing is the coolest thing I've seen this week. 3D, huh? Where do we go from here?
