Reccomend-a-Game (and proper spelling)

So, you've played a game that you really like, and you want to find more like it. Use this thread to have somebody reccomend you a game of the same genre/style etc etc.

I really loved Tie "Fighter". The original (I think it was 1995 or 1998.) The gameplay was super. Can anybody reccomend a similar game?

Magic Mar 3, 2006 01:49 AM

Only space-sims I've ever played are the Wing Commander games. They're not that easy to find and run unfortunately.

Not too long ago I found myself obsessed with some old PC favorites. They're actually 2D side-scrollers, one called Zeliard and the other called Firehawk: Second Contact (sequel to Thexder). They're definitely more than 10 years old, and they work great on Dosbox.

ieatjackets Mar 3, 2006 02:52 PM

If you like Tie Fighter, I'd wager that you'd like ordinary arcade-y flight sims. Check out the Ace Combat series, perhaps.

ApOcaLyPSe_1985 Mar 3, 2006 04:49 PM

Conflict Freespace and Freelancer :)
Yeah, the Lucasarts Tie Fighter & X-Wing games we're very good. They should make some new ones, I love the way missions we're designed :p

But Tie Fighter wasn't arcade style.

Echolyn Mar 3, 2006 07:49 PM

Second the Freespace series they ruled!

Also the WingCommander series were the top of space flight sim back in the day. Only drawback for most of these games is the visual representation, but as you went through tie fighter that won't really matter for you does it?

One the the newer games that could also be of interest is the X series. I played X2 for some time and it's great it's really big though and not only shooting it's a lot deeper than that!

Breakable Mar 3, 2006 08:48 PM

I third the Freespace mention.
Especially Freespace 2. Its a lot like Tie fighter but with better missles and graphics lol.

And the size of some of the ships and the way they fight.
I guarantee you, you will feel like in a TRUE interstellar war.

Well I was hoping for something more modern/better graphics, but I will check out Freespace.

Recommendation for anyone:

-Deus Ex-
__________________________

This is, IMO, the best game ever made, and here's why...

For starters, it's a shooter, but not just any type of shooter, and RPG/Shooter. This means that you can upgrade your skill points and bioaugmentations as you progress through the game, gaining new skills, and getting better at wielding certain classes of guns, melee weapons, or picking locks/hacking computers/using medpacks/etc... Another thing that makes this game amazing is it's endless replayability. Because of the RPG influences the game is wide open, lots of side missions to do, lots of free roaming, PLENTY of places to explore, hundreds of ways to tackle certain obstacles, the works. You can play stealthily, cockily(word?), be conservative, or very liberal in the way you play. There are a ton of weapons, and the way the inventory works is that you have a certain number of squares that you can fill up, certain weapons are bigger, and take up more room, meaning you have to plan what you use carefully.

The main thing that makes this game so amazing, however, is the atmosphere. It's kind of an industrial-cyber-punk atmosphere, in the year 2057, with realistic insights into the near future. Large corporations and factions at play, and terrorism actually a threat to the masses. Also, the way the game is set up, there is a lot of referencing to things you will never see in the game, meaning that the world feels a lot bigger than your average video game, giving you the feeling of being only a small part in the world.

The game is also really long, and travels to many different destinations, such as Hong Kong, New York, Paris, and even Area 51. This also gives you a feeling of a large world, and adds to the atmosphere. The music in the game is also great, with very appropriate music for the settings you are in, and changing music when combat ensues(sp?).

The characters are also very easy to get attached to, and the game really pulls you in, involving you emotionally(another RPG trait). The way the game unfolds really gets you caring for certain characters and absolutely despising(sp?) others. It's great...

All in all, I'd suggest this game for fans of shooters and rpgs alike. It can be found for like 10 bucks in the bargain section of most game stores, and if you are going to get it, look for the GOTY edition, because it comes with multiplayer, which is really unique and fun for this game.

That's my two cents of recommendation...

Free.User Mar 5, 2006 07:54 PM

I've played Deus Ex Invisible war, but I stopped playing part way through. It was alright, but It couldn't compete with the other game I was playing at the time; Half-Life 2.

Kaiten Mar 5, 2006 09:45 PM

Heroes of Might and Magic II:
If you like turn based RPGs and like RTS style build up of units, you'll love this game. It has atmosphere, heart and some great cartoon style graphics. I think it's the best HoMM game in the series and represents the pinnace of PC gaming (in that magical 1997-1999 era).

Free.User Mar 5, 2006 10:26 PM

I preffered Heroes of Might and Magic III, personally.

Yes, well either game is a good choice for some turn-based fantasy all night sessions. For such a slow paced game, it's extremely addictive.

OMG, I'm so sorry, can I get you some medicine or something?:aargh: Another one struck down by Invisible War...a shame...

That game is an absolute DISGRACE to the series, and ultimately led to the bankruptcy of ion storm, one of the parent companies. IW is NOTHING like the original Deus Ex, and I suggest that if you played Invisible War, and hated it, play Deus Ex and forget everything that you ever did in IW.

Eughhhh...It gives me the shivers...

Back in the day, I heard Independance War was good (I've never played it myself). Also you should give Aliens vs Predator 2 a try. It perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the movies, playing as a Predator never gets old. It's like playing 3 different fps games.

If anyone's looking for a simple, but addicting, top-down space fighter game, check out Continuum, also known as SubSpace. It's free for download and to play, it's awesome, and there are tons of different arenas with TONS of people playing it.

Summonmaster Mar 8, 2006 09:17 PM

Psychonauts - I usually don't care for platformers but this game shattered my trend and threw away the pieces. Ultimate wit and humour mixed in with psychic powers and a terribly innovative and diverse range of mind worlds. Does any game come close to this?

Grim Fandango - I respect this game, but I was basically reading a faq every moment of the game, since I'm not a clever adventure puzzle solver. The character models, story concept and environment were unique. Same guy who made Psychonauts was a part of this too!

D - I liked D, even though it was short.

Dilbert's Desktop Games - Oh score! No need for the cd after installation, and a bunch of funny games with frolicking engineers and their frustrations. Excellent distractions.

Single Elbow Mar 9, 2006 08:41 PM

Sure, Unreal Tournament 2004 had vehicles and all these upgraded shitdecks of sweetness but Unreal Tournament released in '98/'99 was way better. Good soundtrack and an awful lot of fun, still.

One of the greatest multiplayer FPS games ever beside a couple that I know.

Spike Mar 10, 2006 01:24 AM

As someone said before, Freelancer owns. It's a huge universe where you can do whatever you want. You can play the campaign and unravel the story or you can do whatever you want. Feel like being a trader? You can buy a huge freighter ship and travel across the HUGE galaxy and trade goods using the trade lanes (which are pretty cool). If that sounds boring, you can be a pirate and wait for the traders to use the trade lanes and shoot the lanes offline so you can hijack their cargo. You can pretty much do whatever you want. Space is very populated and it feels like you're really in a galaxy filled with activity. The graphics are great even for this time (except for the slightly lacking planet textures) but the best thing is the Mouse-Flight control system. It's unlike any other space sim out there and I highly recommend it.

Here's a link to the demo: Freelancer Demo

JasonTerminator Mar 10, 2006 02:24 AM

Oblivion.

I don't care that it's not out yet, it will rock your fucking world.

Immortal Mar 10, 2006 11:12 AM

quake series: Seriously. Quake 2 and 4 have some awesome single player action, and Quake 3 and 4 have some of the most fun DeathMatch modes around. The Quake series is really a must-have for the PC gamer.

Half-Life 1 and 2: and their mods of course. I have to say i have beaten the first HL at least 20 times, and HL2 near that many times. The modding community also puts out some very nice content for these games as well.

Counter-Strike: It may not have the flashy graphics of Counter-Strike: Source, but the gameplay is solid and the crisp feel is rather refreshing after trying to play the stylized Source version. The recoil is responsive and the models don't look like toys which makes this game a simple, yet fun shooter that you can find yourself getting lost in.

Others have mentioned the UT series which is another great addition to a PC gaming collection. I would also check out Deus Ex and the Diablo series for some games you will find yourself getting sucked into.

Free.User Mar 10, 2006 07:00 PM

Yeah, I like UT04 aswell. The engine rocks, and provides endless fun for LAN parties. I'm going to go check out Freelancer.

Kaiten Mar 10, 2006 07:31 PM

Some classics to give a try:
--The Ultimate DOOM
--X-COM: UFO Defense
--Civilizaion 2
--Sim City 2000
--Sim Tower
--Alpha Centari
--Populous III

They all hogged quite a bit of my time and are really cheap to buy (I could give you a Windows compatible verision of X-COM if you want it).

Summonmaster Mar 10, 2006 08:51 PM

There's a Populous 3?
That reminds me - I liked Populous: the Beginning since you could attack your enemies with your shaman priestess' spells and gather power through believers I think.

Free.User Mar 17, 2006 01:28 AM

I downloaded Freelancer, but for some reason whenever I try to run the exe I get the windows "error reporting" dialog box".. any suggestions?

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 07:52 AM

Starcraft, Sam & Max, Discworld, Diablo 2, any Terry Pratchet material, possibly the original Dungeon Keeper for old time's sake.

That's all that you really need. Why this topic is in PC Gaming I don't know, but those are the only really worthwhile games on PC you're going to find.

I would specifically like to point out Starcraft. Starcraft has Use Map Settings mode, or UMS for short, which basically allows you to create your own and play your own(and others) custom maps. It's entirely for fun. Cat & Mouse, Bounds, Evolves, Golems, all that. They're popular names from a Blizzard game which users made, and are continuing to make. Great replayability.

Minoko Mar 17, 2006 12:12 PM

Baldur's Gate 2 is kewl...the number of quests just piles up until you get used it...
The Masquarade: Bloodlines is alright except it can get a bit repetitive...
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic I and II....the first skill I always get it force shock..bwahahaha...the first kotor's story (for me) is better than the second..but the character growth is much better in the second.

Lipid Mar 17, 2006 04:45 PM

MMORPG: Dark Age of Camelot
Not at all difficult to level up, anymore; Best PvP system in an MMO to date (Realm vs. Realm vs. Realm), still a solid player base.

FPS: Battlefield 2, Quake4
Battlefield 2 is just down-right entertaining to play. Can be quick paced or slow paced depending on your play-style. Quake4 brings a classic Deathmatch-y feel to a modern game in a very fun way.

RTS: There's so many out right now... Star Wars: Empire at War, LotR:Battle for Middle-Earth 2, Command and Conquer Generals
SW:EaW brings everything you'd expect to see in a good Star Wars RTS; Space battles, land battles, conquering a galazy, etc. Plus you can control Vader. And Vader is good.
BFME2, again, is everythin'g you'd want in a LotR RTS. The graphics, the atmoshpere, it's all superb
C&C:G is just a very traditional-yet-awesome C&C game with fun, fast 3d graphics to back it up

Sports: New Star Soccer 3 (http://www.newstarsoccer.com)
Not sure this is a well-known game, but it's ridiculously entertaining for what it is. A 2d, single-player, soccer simulation. You manage 1 player through his entire career, get him signed in almost any team/league/nation you so desire. A lot of options packed into a fun shareware game that's finally worth the $20

RPG: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
It isn't quite out, yet (goddamn you, Bethesda!!!!), but I already know that I will be losing MANY hours of sleep to this game. Open-ended free-roaming RPG if there ever was one. Comes with a fairly simple to use Editor of it's own. So go ahead, make your own continent. It isn't that hard :D

Im tired of typing now... These, of course, are all IMO. :)

Kaiten Mar 17, 2006 09:25 PM

Some good freeware games:
Warning Forever, vector based ship combat game, quite addictive and very challenging.
GlTron, lets you race with the light cycles, not much more to say.

They're both free and fun to play, give both a good try.

Jinn Mar 17, 2006 11:37 PM

I'd check out Freedom Force or Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. Once you except the halarious presentation of the game as a form of storytelling of it's own, they can be two of the most fun games you'll ever play. I have played through both of them a couple time's already and I never once felt bored.

Max POWER Feb 22, 2007 07:05 PM

I'm bumping this old-ass thread. -_-;;

Okay, so my bro wants a good recommendation for a PC RPG. He says it can be an MMO if need be, but it has to have a very strong story. Also, if it is an MMO, he doesn't want to pay a monthly subscription; he only wants to pay one time. He would prefer that the game is fairly old (a couple years old at least), as he wants the game to be able to run on an old computer. Finally, the single player has to be playable online, if the game is not an MMO; that is to say, he wants to be able to play the single player with another player cooperatively over the net. So...does any game like that exist out there? Ever?

Dyesan Feb 22, 2007 11:49 PM

Xbox: Kingdom Under Fire (series)

The game is something like Dynasty Warriors, only (IMO) much better. It's not just crazy hack-and-slash but there's a good amount of strategy mixed in there as well. Also, you control several groups of armies (usually 3-4).
I really enjoyed the first one alot. Second one had a level that I couldn't beat for some reason. Learning curve is a bit steep, so prepare to spend a little bit time how to maximize control over your army. Overall, great game even though the campaigns were a tad short.

edit.
Doh, *PC* games, just noticed.

Well, I can still recommend Starcraft: Broodwar (been playing for years and still play today). DEFCON is also worth checking out for some nuclear warfare. Great little strategy game to play with friends during class.

X-Calibar Feb 23, 2007 12:27 AM

Hmmm, well for your friend Max Biggs, uh the first few games that come to mind would be Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate Saga [1,2 etc], Guild Wars... [although the story isn't as strong as what BG2 or what you might find in NWN]

If you go the NWN route, you'll need to look up what's the best or the most fun thing to play; I never got into it but there is a ton of custom content that rivals sweet commercial games [the story that comes with the game is kinda blah]...

If you go the Baldur's Gate route, you can get BG1 with Tales of the Sword Coast and BG2 with ToB; then look up the mods, like Baldur's Gate Trilogy or Tutu with BG1NPC, and Banter pack for BG2, etc and you'll be blown away at the quality of the story... [although personally I never got into playing it multiplayer] was too into doing that singleplayer...

Guild Wars has a decent story but you probably won't be attached for too long lol but it has pretty good cooperative multiplayer!

Those are all mostly 3rd person games...
A while back I heard that Vampire the Mascarade was supposed to be really good and multiplayer, although I never tried it... If you like vampires~!

Diablo 2 is shallow on story but classic on gameplay...

My personal reccomendations for really sweet games to play would be :

Baldur's Gate Saga - Not only was it a game of the year out of the box, but modders have added professional custom content to turn the great story into an excellent one~! But, you'll have to research what to add on...

Morrowind and Oblivion - I haven't tried Oblivion, but Morrowind has an ABSOLUTE ton of amazing custom content, and those that get bored with Oblivion quickly find themselves back in Morrowind~! The original game is dated, but add custom content and you'll be overwhelmed. Trust me lol

Ever17 - It's a Visual Novel, basically after you've played so many games after so many years you might be itching for something else... For me, this is it~! It's an excellent story told in anime format that you go through like a novel, and make choices along the way... It's more like an electronic book; longer than most anime series, but you get to affect the events that transpire... It doesn't cost much and I'm obsessed now ;)

Cave Story - It's a freeware retro platfromer game~! It has a style that has many people calling it one of the best freeware games out there~! You'll most likely have a blast with this strange game ;)

Wing Commander 3 and 4 - These were priceless games, if they had been movies they'd been great successes... [unlike the weird teen spinoff Wing Commander movie] Flight simulators with choose the outcome choices... Live actors like Mark Hamil doing a great job. Good stuff, it really deserves a high def restoration lol

Loom cd, Monkey Island cd, The Longest Journey - all great adventure games, you'll find reasons to love em :P

Games keep churning out, but you'll be hard pressed to find ones that stay with you, these are just a few that have with me..!

Rayne Mar 5, 2007 03:30 PM

I need another good RPG. All I know of is Final Fantasy and Zelda. I know there are more but I don't wanna waste money. Exclude all Square Enix games, I'm aware of them. Can anyone recommend a good RPG with a good Story?

No. Hard Pass. Mar 5, 2007 03:35 PM

For you, Rayne? It would have to be something with low levels of reading comprehension, you fucking schmuck. Look at what forum you're in, kid. PC gaming. Not console. Get out.

I do have a problem with that tho

Single Elbow Mar 6, 2007 12:56 AM

I'd go with 3 games for now.

1. Unreal Tournament '99 - It was fun back then and it is still now. Fast-paced gameplay without high-end specs. The music is awesome too; one of the best VGMs I have ever heard, hands down.

2. Deus Ex - This has been elaborated already so I'll cut mine short (with some ties-in to the long post): Great story, interesting characters and a great soundtrack as well. Similar to this one would be System Shock (although of a horror genre; see next game below - SS is also great).

3. Clive Barker's Undying - This game is solely singleplayer so don't expect too much. Then again, the story unfolds well and there's a lot of character development. It's horror - best when played lights out. The devs actually thought of making a multiplayer for this game but seeing as the game got low sales, it was abandoned. Still a great game for those who are into horror.

Goubot Mar 7, 2007 08:12 AM

I've been playing Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines lately, and it does its setting about as well as any RPG I've seen. It does get repetitive, but it's still fun in an odd way.

Speaking of Heroes of Might and Magic, is HoMM V any good? I've been pretty behind when it comes to playing newer PC games.

Wasiano Mar 7, 2007 09:18 PM

I am currently playing a free-to-play MMORPG that I think is a lot of fun. The game is called Corum Online and it was one of the top games in Korea and Japan over the last couple of years. It was finally brought to the US by a company called GPotato. I have been playing the game since the Closed Beta started in January. It has a very unique PvP system where you fight with other people/guilds over the possession of siege dungeons that are scattered throughout the world of Corum. You get rewards for maintaining the control of dungeons. You can also create rare items in the game including amazing looking guardians that are like pets. I would recommend that you check it out!

Free.User Jun 9, 2008 04:26 PM

Epic bump.

I'm just wondering if there are any good PC games that are similar to Ace Combat, or any flight/combat simulators. I can't get enough of the Jet and Helicopter gameplay in the Battlefield series. Recommendation's?

BlindMonk Jun 9, 2008 06:00 PM

Any combat simlulators? IL-2 Sturmovik.

slayer25k Jun 9, 2008 06:06 PM

See here!

They're going to release a very interesting new game soon, which is going to be very Kasatka and graphic processor's death:

See there!

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jun 10, 2008 04:28 AM

If you can get them to run on a modern PC, Gunship 2000 and Strike Commander are two of the greatest flight-sims/combat games ever crafted by human kind. Gunship 2000 is a helicopter sim that has you starting off solo but graduating up to leading a flight of upto five choppers. The level of tactical depth is great, allowing you to send one of your squad mates in a scout helicopter to target the enemy from the brow of a hill whilst you and the others sit back in complete safety behind the hill firing hellfire missiles round the side of it using their lock-on. It looks rather dated now but it's helluva fun.

Strike Commander is a flight sim with a story. You're the commander of a group of mercenaries and as well as blowing shit up, you have to balance the books so do you save money and try to take out the base with unguided bombs or blow the budget on Mavericks and wipe it off the face of the planet from 20 miles away? The dog fighting is wicked cool too and with all the detail effects turned up full, it looks comparable to a PS1 game.

Of course if you own a PS1 you should play Colony Wars. It's fucking difficult but a great space shooter. Oh yeah, and G-Police.

Edit: Oh yeah, everyone who owns a PC should play Master of Orion. It's like Civilisation in space only not nearly as gay.

Helloween Jun 10, 2008 12:17 PM

I've been playing Master of Orion 3 for the last few months (yeah still on my first match) and i can second Shin's recomendation. It made me forget about Civilization in a hurry.

BlindMonk Jun 10, 2008 02:46 PM

^ Strikes me as rather funny, considering original Orion players have convinced themselves that #3 never happened.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jun 11, 2008 07:59 AM

I never played MoO3 but I fucking loved the first two. The addition of multiplayer in the second made it dangerously easy to waste entire weeks at university...

Helloween Jun 11, 2008 11:28 AM

I've never played 1 or 2, but i found MoO3 in a bargain bin for 5 bucks, and after never having heard of the series, played it, and loved it. Take that as you will.

Amayirot Akago Jul 20, 2008 09:39 AM

Serious bumpage.

After being stuck with an antique for far too long, I'm finally getting a new PC sometime next week. Are there any obvious or not so obvious games released in the last year-and-a-half I should check out now that I can actually play them? My preferences go out towards anything action-oriented, but feel free to surprise me.

map car man words telling me to do things Jul 20, 2008 10:53 AM

I was more or less in the same position as you, only I've already gotten my PC and have been playing on it for quite a while.

First thing that comes to mind is obviously Orange Box and Call of Duty 4. I know a lot of the 360 and PS3 fans will tell you how awesome it's in multiplayer with them, but CoD4 is a PC game through and through and while you lose analogue movement and rumble, the mouse aiming really makes the game, because like in Flashpoint, it only takes a few bullets to drop an enemy. Plus it looks superb on a decent+ PC.

Orange Box is another given. I've played Half-Life 2 twice, plus once on the 360 and while it works really well on a console, all five games on OB are PC games through and through (the closest exception being Portal but again, you gain additional levels). I've also played around with some mods and thankfully Steam makes Sourcemods wonderfully effortless. Look up and get Minerva when you can.

Every other game I've been getting for the PC are the type I'm very late for the party for, meaning more old adventure games I never got around to finding and/or didn't have the hard drive space (Atlantis series, Myst series, Uru, Culpa Innata, Scratches, Realms of the Haunting etc) and shooters that didn't run good enough on my old PC (Far Cry, Painkiller, Serious Sam 2, Mafia, Brothers in Arms games). And some RTS games, mainly Starcraft, Homeworld 1 & 2 (superb) and Company of Heroes (more Relic goodness).

I also intend to get Mass Effect and Crysis once I find the cash for them. I've already completed ME on the 360, but it's worth replaying on PC.

If a little on the insanely hard side. I pretty much suck at RTS games at the best of times but throw in a 3d element and I'm beyond lost. I'd love to be good at this game because it really is great but I'm fucked if I know what's going on half the time. :(

I'd like to point out that ME, has a 3-time installation limit. I bought the game prior to this knowledge. Personally, I just feel that I haven't really bought the game, knowing that I might not be able to install this after a couple years (and reinstalls) have passed.

You can actually bypass the install-limit issue with a crack, but cracking a game you bought? It's better to download the entire thing that way.

Also Crysis, no replay value at all, and the story ends midway. Great graphics, but that's about it. If you're a little tight on cash, you might wanna think twice on these titles. Plus, you already completed ME on the 360 anyways.

map car man words telling me to do things Jul 21, 2008 12:09 PM

There's yet to be a person who's spurred me from buying something I already intend to buy. Thanks for the advice though I guess~

When I mean to buy something, I've already weighed the pros and cons. It doesn't mean I'll fall over myself to pay full price for them (as I'd have already done that), but since I want to play them both (and I have plenty of great games I love and only play once), I will eventually get them, usually cheap enough for me (which is pretty cheap).

As for that install limit, I don't know what's the big deal. I saw people whine about it with Bioshock and I wondered so what. Most copy-protection/internet activation shit is one time only. It's awful, I hate it, it prevents me from loaning great PC games to friends (Call of Duty 4, hello), but I don't see it being any worse than three times the amount. I mean with that I'm at least assured I can reinstall if my PC breaks down or I upgrade.

So yeah, I don't like any of this copy-protection activation stuff, but it's never prevented me from buying a game. It's not as if that's going to make any kind of difference. If it messes up on me, I'll download it so long as I can play it. At that point I figure I'm entitled to that but otherwise I like owning my games in physical form (again, for a fair price).

Fair enough, so long as you're informed about this install-limit thing. I know you tend to buy a lot of games/animu, so, wouldn't want you to waste money on ME incase you didn't know about this issue. I for one felt like I've been cheated of my money over this.

On the side note, I spent the full price on this game, since I got it on the release day. Now I have to think twice when reformatting my PC =___=

Crysis still sucks though lolol

Might I interject?

While the whole 3 install limit thing with Mass Effect is rather ridiculous, it has been said that in the near future, when the threat of new game piracy fever becomes less of a worry to EA, that particular feature will be patched out. Not that I agree with this tactic, but I thought I would just bring it up.

I suppose that's good news, for me at least, if it were to happen. But seriously though, EA/Bioware is actually pushing potential customers to piracy with this install-limit feat. The pirated version has no difference besides the fact that it has unlimited installations. Not like the original has an edge over the copy.

They even added a small message at the game box, stating that there will be free DLC included. Until now, no news of it. All the more reason to get the pirated version.

After being stuck with an antique for far too long, I'm finally getting a new PC sometime next week. Are there any obvious or not so obvious games released in the last year-and-a-half I should check out now that I can actually play them? My preferences go out towards anything action-oriented, but feel free to surprise me.

Get S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow of Chernobyl. Oh it's got action. More challenging and rewarding action than most. But there's also free roaming exploration, and it can be the most atmospheric and frightening game you will play. The devolopers managed to create a world immersive both in its gritty Eastern Europe authenticity, and in its reality distorting special effect set pieces. Certain moments of STALKER will stay in my gaming memory for a long long time to come.

You know, I've heard nothing but good things about this game, so I gave it a try. I wanted to love it. I tried to love it, but I ended up uninstalling it about an hour in. I couldn't fucking stand the completely shitty interface; not necessarily the graphical aspect, but how you interact with the game. IE, not being able to select certain weapons with the scroll wheel, not being able to actually see what weapons are where when you scroll for them. It caused me to run around flipping randomly through weapons until I accidentally landed on the right one. There were other issues to, mostly little things like not being able to disable sprint-lock... trivial I know, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get immersed if I was constantly cussing at the technical things.
