Yotsuba is invincible. "WAKAPPA!"

I was shocked to discover how many people, despite coeccias', Saka's and my best efforts, are still unaware of the greatness of Yotsuba. Let the awareness spread!

Yotsuba&! (or "Yotsuba to!" or "Yotsuba and!") is the latest manga from Azumanga Daioh creator Kiyohiko Azuma. It's the story of a little five year old girl, Yotsuba Koiwai, who moves to a new house with her father at the start of the series. We then follow Yotsuba as she explores the world around her, meets people and wonderfully funny hijinx follow. Each chapter is aptly named and connects with the "Yotsuba and!" theme of the title ("Chapter 5: Yotsuba & shopping", "Chapter 7: Yotsuba & the storm" etc).

Besides Yotsuba, other important characters are Yotsuba's father (we never hear his first name), Jumbo, a close friend of the two, and the Ayase family, who live next door to them, mainly the three sisters Asagi, Fuuka and Ena.

Where Azumanga Daioh was mostly 4-panel strips, Yotsuba is laid out like a typical manga, but both are in the warm, relaxing slice of life style of manga. Azuma let's us view the world through the eyes of Yotsuba, through the eyes of a five year old. Everything is new, everything is exciting, everything is something to enjoy and to learn about.

Yotsuba's energetic and always curious personality could have turned out annoying in other series, but it's the honest enthusiasm and love for life, that makes the series so wonderfully irresistible. Yotsuba's humor has slapstick and visual gags, but the best laughs come from the subtle and amazingly perceptive observations of everyday life and things people tend to take for granted. There is so much wisdom and love, you'd need to be a completely heartless dullard to not love it.

Yotsuba began serializing in the magazine Dengeki Daioh in 2003, while the characters first made their appearance in Try Try Try!, a short one shot manga. The characters' appearances were changed a little for the manga proper, but the personalities were set in even back then, and the chapter is worth reading just to see how similar and how different everything is.

The manga was licensed by ADV in 2004. The fifth collected volume came out in Japan just recently, while ADV has released three translated volumes so far. I've not found confirmation for it, but the continuation of translated volumes seems pretty unclear, severely delayed if nothing else. ADV has confirmed they're still releasing Yotsuba. Volume 4 is set to come out at the start of 2007. Momotato Daioh has been translating chapters way before the series got licensed, and has been continuing to put out chapters every now and then, probably because of the way ADV has handled things. 43 chapters have been translated so far.

Even though there isn't an anime adaption yet (we can only hope), an adorable image album "A Cute Symphony for One Fun Day" has been released for the series, composed by Masaki Kurihara of Azumanga Daioh fame, and is essential, highly recommended listening for Yotsuba reading~

While I'm a huge Nausicaä and Maison Ikkoku fan, Yotsuba could well be the greatest comic in the world.
It's funny, cute, warm, witty and makes you smile unlike anything. There is a wide range of humor and jokes, brilliant insight into regular, everyday life, beautiful art and attention to detail and character nuances. It's not huge on action, drama or character development, but the series shows how it doesn't really need them that much (and both are in there).
The world will be a better place when everyone is reading Yotsuba, so spread the word, everyone! =D

Yotsuba& makes me smile inside. That is rare.

Boo-kun Apr 25, 2006 05:58 AM

^ Proof finns have better taste.

Yotsuba is awesome.
When I first started reading this few years ago, it made me laugh till I cried. I read Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (another awesome manga) at the same time and was all "=D/;_;/=o" all week.
Simply a must read.

What are you still doing here? Go find it ffs! >=0

FatsDomino Apr 25, 2006 06:05 AM

Oh snap, another super awesome manga, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, being mentioned in this thread about a super awesome manga! Finns do have good taste. Or at least Boo does.

Yotsuba is <3

I'm a half-finn, and I like Yotsuba, so there's further evidence. :)

How is the translation in the ADV volumes? I didn't want to get their Azumanga release because they went overboard with their localisation/adaptation.

^-^ Apr 25, 2006 07:25 AM

I <3 Yotsuba&!

They've done a pretty good job so far.
They changed Pantsman to Boxerman, and the Honyakuka - Konnyakuya gag naturally doesn't work as well in english (although their effort wasn't too bad, Translator - Train spotter), but those are the only complaints I've had.

Yotsuba in book form is good enough reason for purchase anyway~

Grawl Apr 25, 2006 07:46 AM

Fine I'll download >=O

Fjordor Apr 25, 2006 08:24 AM

Many thanks to Moon and Qwarky for supplying this. I was tracking the conversations in the journals over this series, and I was having trouble figuring out how to obtain it. I definitely look forward to reading "Yotsuba to."

Dark Nation Apr 25, 2006 09:07 AM

I suppose I'll check this out. I've seen her here and there but I never got a chance to actually know what the 4chan girl was about. Same thing with Azumanga Daioh, but I know a little more about that show, no biggie.

Downloading now.

I'm an old Yotsuba& fan ;d

DONMAI! ;D

gaara-chan Apr 25, 2006 09:44 AM

I loved it when the colored picture with yotsuba weeping over the air conditioner issue roamed around on the internet. Everyone was like "OMG, there's an anime now!111". Too bad there isn't one, I'd definately start following it.

I'm really enjoying the manga so far. Volume three arrived around a week ago, and I've already read through it a few times :D. Is there any news on how many volumes this series will cover?

Spoiler:
I love the revenge chapter xD

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 25, 2006 10:09 AM

Everyone loves the revenge chapter. I personally love the Flower Cupid chapter above all else~

Also the series is still going in Japan, so who knows. I'm assuming it's still pretty popular and Azuma seems to enjoy doing it, so hopefully no end in sight as of yet.

Vemp Apr 25, 2006 10:39 AM

I READ THIS BEFORE Q DID. I AM SUPELIOL!

I need to find the scans of the earlier chapters.

I have them, I just misplaced them.

Another winner. This deserves an internet.

coeccias Apr 25, 2006 04:12 PM

This manga really exemplifies the 'less is more' attitude. No matter how many times I read through any particular chapter, I still laugh and smile at the antics of this uninhibited little girl. I think my Yotsubato-getting journal entries were all lost, so in order to spread the goodness that is Yotsubato, I am changing my avatar/signature back to one of my favorite themes.

Summonmaster Apr 25, 2006 04:42 PM

Thank you so much for linking to the scans! I literally screamed GTFO! when I saw the link for this at the bottom of the first post.
I had been on the fence about this for a very long time seeing as how manga is always expensive, and I couldn't think of how they would top Azu Dai in terms of humour. If the rest of the manga is anywhere near as funny as that page shown above where she's holding the gun: "save your excuses for the devil!", then I'm set :)

Dullenplain Apr 26, 2006 01:20 AM

It's one of the best manga I have read thus far. It also contains the type of plain, yet absurd humor I enjoy most.

Cirno Apr 27, 2006 01:08 AM

Downloading now.

It took me years to look into Azumanga Daioh! to see what the fuss was all about. Now that I'm happily married to Osaka, I didn't think to bother with Yotsuba. In fact, I always assumed it was some kind of doujinshi made by die-hard fans OF Azumanga Daioh!.

So yeah, I'll give this a shot. I won't be marrying any six year old girls, though.

Admiral Amara Apr 27, 2006 01:21 AM

Yeah, please don't be marrying any six-year old girls. That'd be creepy.

However, DO please read the most heartwarming manga I've ever seen. Does it get any cuter? I don't think it does. I love in the "Global Warming" one where she runs back to her house and yells "I've misjudged you daddy!" Much lolin'.

Cirno Apr 27, 2006 01:34 AM

I was actually going to make a joke in reference to our neighborhood Cam, but that's become a sort of GFF cliche.

FatsDomino Apr 27, 2006 01:41 AM

Yotsuba isn't the only girl in the manga, you know. There are plenty of interesting and amusing older females in it too.

Who's the person who started the whole "*insert fictional character name here* is my wife" thing anyway?

Cirno Apr 27, 2006 02:23 AM

I'm not sure, actually. I've always found it kind of funny, though. It's another one of those 4chan memes (I believe) that wound up over here.

FatsDomino Apr 27, 2006 03:40 AM

I know it's at 4chan and sometimes it's funny but I was more or less asking if anyone knew if it started somewhere besides 4chan.

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 27, 2006 04:27 AM

It's generally very difficult to trace something back to its original beginning, especially if it's gotten popular, but not actually started, at 4chan. Case in point, when I tried to find out the real origin (and hopefully original screenshot) of the whole "im in ur base, killin ur doods" Starcraft (or is that Warcraft) thing. I got about a few dozen answers, all of them conflicting with the other, and none of them plausible enough.

And I'd naturally marry Fuuka~

FatsDomino Apr 27, 2006 04:55 AM

Can't have her, bitch! She's mine! >8U
lol

Summonmaster Apr 27, 2006 10:36 AM

Don't deny that Asagi's where it's at!

Did I misread or something? So if I'm correct, then there are actually more than 26 chapters out, but they're not all translated yet? Also, is the English manga much farther behind than the scans?

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 27, 2006 10:48 AM

Yeah, 5 volumes out in Japan so far. ADV has released volume 3, which ends at chapter 21, meaning the scanlated chapter 26 is some way in the middle of Volume 4. Momotato is working on the next batch of chapters (I think it was chapters 27-30 or maybe 27-32), but he's a bit busy with life, so it may take some more.

I had to leaf through my translated volume 3 for the chapter number, so I saw and was reminded of what happens in chapter 21. That scene of Yotsuba crying and telling her name in the middle of the crowd is such a heartbreaking moment. Yet you know it was necessary for her to learn even a little.

It's one of the things I love about the series. There's just enough mischief to make it snappy (I feel so guilty for always laughing at the paper-scissors-stone match in chapter 22), and there are the moments when Yotsuba gets scared or hurt, just like children do, but it's mostly so warm and knowing.

Summonmaster Apr 27, 2006 10:51 AM

Heh I agreed with that part where she's lost in the crowd. It was funny how after she just randomly yells that 'it's dangerous' to the nearby people.

I'm a sadist that likes the part where Miura wears the bird-scaring balloon over her head and everyone starts screaming in a chain reaction of events.

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 27, 2006 10:54 AM

The incident itself was hilarious, but I hate Miura for doing such a horrible thing. Going out of her way to scare a child like that

Synthesis Apr 27, 2006 11:32 AM

I've read some of the Yotsuba&! manga in various anime magazines. I've wanted to pick up the series but no stores in my area carry them at the moment. :(

Fjordor Apr 27, 2006 11:45 AM

Sorry, there is no Yotsuba anime. At least, nothing by the official creators. :(
What was made available is the current collection of translated manga.

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 27, 2006 11:55 AM

Speaking of non-official Yotsuba anime:

And hopefully everyone's seen the awesome Azumanga Yotsuba OP animation flash. Acer was kind enough to upload it for easier finding, be sure to save it for safekeeping immediately:

http://www.acerbandit.net/flash/soramimiyotuba.swf

Summonmaster Apr 27, 2006 12:51 PM

Wonderfully done! I really was convinced that Fuuka was just like Osaka and that Yotsuba was just like Chiyo throughout. It also was a lot better than the ordinary flash, in the sense that I was very close to being deceived into thinking I was watching an actual anime op.

Hooray, Yotsuba thriumphs again!
With all the boom lately, I started rereading Yotsuba again and by the gods this is as hilarious as ever.
Thus Ava/Sig!
I'll get back on this after going through it first~

my GOD I hadn't seen that Yotsubato OP
Not only does it win worth tomorrow too, I managed to wake my parents with laughing x)

Seris Apr 27, 2006 05:19 PM

I just got finished reading through all of the scanalations, and I'm absolutely in love with Yotsuba.

Particularly the introduction to pants man (the rain) and the fireworks display "episodes".

Heartwarming, cute stuff right there.

OmagnusPrime Apr 28, 2006 11:18 AM

I'd never read manga before (well I don't read any comics or the such like really), so I will admit to being highly sceptical before hand. However, I love it to bits. I've not read anything that's put such a huge smile on my face for a while and this did just that every time. Abso-fucking-lutely brilliant. I want more damn it. >_<

Admiral Amara Apr 28, 2006 12:52 PM

Hahaha! I just read Yotsuba & The TV, the one where Jumbo shows up. I was laughing throughout the entire thing, absolutely hysterical chapter.

GAOO!

Also, Yotsuba & Shopping is a lot of fun too, though with no Jumbo (I think he might be my favorite character aside from Yotsuba herself... GAOOO!). The misadventures of this little girl are cute beyond words. Again, a huge thanks to all who promoted it.

Black Ninja May 4, 2006 01:03 AM

I'm still waiting for vol. 3, or a chance to buy it if it's already out. It's one of those mangas that you can just laugh and laugh and there's nothing dirty or sick about it (like Tenjho Tenge for example, which is funny, violent and full of sex).

I don't have a scan, but my favorite page was
Spoiler:
When she walked in the house with the gun, drew it and then politely asked if she could come in. And then "killed" her.

map car man words telling me to do things May 5, 2006 07:51 AM

TSUKUTSUKU-BOUSHI!

As some of you may have already heard, chapters 27-30 are now out. I got mine from #lurk, but Face has been nice enough to upload the two packs to his server:
http://f4c3.free.fr/Yotsubato_c27-28.rar
http://f4c3.free.fr/Yotsubato_c29-30.zip

Be sure to thank him.

Anyway, I actually don't think these are Momotato's scanlations. Not only has he not updated his news at all about a release, and the typeset is completely different. It's good work anyway, so I highly recommend reading them, all four chapters are wonderful. Chapter 30, with Yanda's first appearance, is by far the most mischievious chapter so far, but I still couldn't contain my laughter, no matter how guilty I felt about it.

Of course, after that you only need to reread chapter 27 again~

I've prepared a single ZIP package of 27-30 for download from my website:

BTB, is Azuma trying to forshadow something with Yotsuba's "Enemy" talking or is he doing it to be cute?

Pyocola May 5, 2006 04:47 PM

I liked the first chapter of volume five, with the robot, and the chapter with Yanda really was one of the best so far. I really lol'd at the part with the cellphone and the unko, evil Yotsuba rules!

I was reading the Japanese volume and while it takes some time to understand, it's easy enough for me to actually be able to read it without having to look up every damn word (unlike Patlabor.) Now I'll probably just skip ADV and get the JP volumes from YesAsia instead (if they can ever get volume 2 in :(.) Oh well, on to chapter 31!

I'm completely smitten with the Tsukutsuku-boushi chapter. While the Flower Cupid remains my absolute favorite, chapter 27 is such a winner.

Not only is it completely adorable, but it's filled with absolute GOLD moments like Yotsuba making the earth slightly safer with the AC remote and the trouble it eventually causes dad, the whole "I'm a tsukutsuku-boushi!" stuff and the reactions it brings out in everyone, Jumbo's return from Hawaii, Asagi's impersonation of the cicada and Yotsuba hastily trying to reveal her exciting discovery to her dad near the end. Such a perfect description of children's impatience and frustration at adults not listening XD

Summonmaster May 6, 2006 11:48 AM

nice new stuff as always
I didn't like chapter 30 with Yotsuba & Yanda. The mooch sort of forced his way in and Yotsuba REALLY hated him: "Go away and never come back!"

Mega Awesome <3. Ice cream, LOL!

Trigunnerz May 8, 2006 01:10 AM

Why is Yotsuba so cute?! I never thought I would say that.

My favorite so far has to be the one where Yotsuba meets Yanda. POO!

This reminds me, I should get Azumanga. It's the same artist right?

map car man words telling me to do things May 8, 2006 02:52 AM

Yes it is. I'd say the style (and structure) is slightly different, but in general you can say if you enjoy Yotsuba, you'd love Azumanga as well. It's a must read especially if you liked the anime, as the two complement each other very well, both exhibiting gags and puns not in the other.
I do wish ADV would have realized to put translation notes into the first two volumes, though.

Summonmaster May 8, 2006 10:41 AM

Speaking of which, I should give that image album a try. It just might be a better match up of reading Y and listening to Azu D OST at the same time, ya know. It just might.

Thanks for the links - and now I'm tempted to get a Yotsuba-related ava/sig.

>=) Another one to join the ranks!
I am patiently awaiting for the next few chapters :)

PiccoloNamek May 12, 2006 02:02 AM

Hmm. I've been wondering. Is it ever alluded what Yotsuba's actual nationality is? I was intrigued when I read Ena's line: "She looks a bit weird. Is she a foreigner? Or maybe..." and especially her dad's line about finding her in "another country", wherever that is.

Ok, so:

For a Japanese person to not be sure about her race, there's a fairly good chance she's ...
(a) half-Japanese and half-anything else but black
(b) Chinese
(c) Korean

Because let's face it -- either you're not going to question her Japanese origin at all, or you're going to know she's not Japanese. These are the only possible exceptions. Ena thought Yotsuba looked a little strange, strange enough to make her ask, "Is she a foreigner?" You don't say about somebody who you know is a foreigner, "Are they a foreigner?". You just don't. You only ask if somebody's foreign if they're deceptively looking and sounding a lot like your people, but there's something ... just a little off ...

Thoughts? Not that it truly matters, because she's still super-cute regardless, but it is something I've wondered about.

OmagnusPrime May 12, 2006 02:23 AM

I wondered that too. I also wondered if there was the possibility she comes from Hawaii (I vaguely recall talk of them coming from an island, or maybe I'm imagining that).

FatsDomino May 12, 2006 02:57 AM

You never knew Koalla Su's nationality from Love Hina until volume 13. Everyone always thought she was Indian and she'd always deny that because, well, she wasn't as it turned out. Anyway, Yotsuba's nationality is up in the air and when we find out we'll find out. It doesn't really matter.

You weren't imagining. It came from this scene attached here. And another page from earlier only hinting at her history.

That's about all that was revealed.

1. She's not from Japan.
2. She's probably from some island "to the left"
3. She was abandoned by her parents.
4. She has a grandmother.

map car man words telling me to do things May 12, 2006 03:55 AM

Yotsuba's nationality admittedly intrigued me, but only when the manga itself talked about it, as otherwise it doesn't matter. Finding out more about her past would be fascinating, but it might be something painful and what matters most is that Yotsuba is happy right now.
It's obvious it doesn't matter too much to Azuma, and I think the "Yeah. Hawaii's to the right" line is a perfect and subtle example of this.

Yotsuba sees dad as her real father (though she probably doesn't even know what a biological father is) and dad definitely sees Yotsuba as his real daughter.

wakarukaya May 12, 2006 05:18 AM

Thanks for the links!! Yotsuba& is my favorite manga! I can't wait till more comes out.

I also don't foresee a chapter where Yotsuba's past is explained. The tone of this manga is really positive and light, and hopefully it won't get too serious. But who knows what Azuma wants to do with this later...

hikarub May 14, 2006 10:41 PM

Excellent series!! Don't know why it took me so long to get into Yotsubato! :D

One of my favorite stories has to be the one where her dad and Jumbo have a badminton match face-off. It was so funny while they're arguing about it going out or in:

Dad: "It went over the rope and then straight into the ground *drilling the shuttle cock into the ground* it went in at least 10cm!! Gettting it out was almost impossible!!!"
Jumbo: "Shut up!! You're an idiot!! A stupid idiot!!!"

Man, am I glad I found those scanlations. It doesn't look like ADV has Vol. 4 of Yotsuba&! scheduled anytime soon. And after the horrible print quality of Vol. 3, I'm less inclined to purchase their stuff.

Yotsuba&! is definitely the best manga I've read in years. I do with there was more of it, but Azuma definitely makes the most of every chapter. His style has definitely become cleaner and more attractive since the early days of Azumanga Daioh.

The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that it's published in the seinen magazine Dengeki Daioh, where ecchi and lolicon content is fairly common. Yotsuba&! is pretty innocent for the most part, but being in that mag gives it some undertones that kinda bother me.

Anyone know where I can get Volume 27 - Current? I am definetly digging this manga.

One thing though: Is it just her, or is it a cultural thing in japan for people to say "I've formed a better opinion of you, ____", because I've never really heard anyone in the US say that (I was re-reading Volume 3 after Hatter's comment & Qwarky's reply, lol ).

Hmm, odd that you guys didn't notice, it caused a big stir on the AnimeOnDVD forums...
Basically, ADV's entire print run of Yotsuba&! Vol. 3 is marred with lower-quality, pixelated, "jagged" edges, something even an apprentice printer should have been able to catch. It's not really noticable if you hold the book a full arm's length away, but I like to hold it closer, to better appreciate the linework (as do many people). I'm not sure whether ADV just happened to get low-quality masters for this volume (unlikely), but it definitely affected my enjoyment of the volume. Their first two volumes were pretty much pristine, which is important since Azuma has such a clean line style.
As far as I can tell, there's only one "clean" page in the whole volume (p. 173, when Yotsuba tries balloon catching over, and over, and over...) Look at the lines of their face, then compare it to the opposite page. You'll definitely notice.

I actually held off on buying vol. 3 for the longest time, hoping ADV would correct the problem in a new print run. They haven't acknowledged it yet.

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, I still loved the content, just wish it was treated better.

It's probably not an expression you hear out loud too much, but I've seen it used in a number of titles, so it's definitely a part of the Japanese mindset. Guess it ties in with their cultural fear of being singled out & being thought of as "weird".

Interesting. I had to comb through my volume again at close range and I had a hard time seeing what you mean at first.

Is this the "jagged" edge you mean?
http://myy.helia.fi/~a0400729/Pics/IMG%20305.jpg

I see it now, but since I didn't notice it at all when reading, it's not that much of an issue for me personally, unlike a dodgy translation or censoring/content editing would be.
At a normal reading lenght the panel line "jaggies" are still slightly visible

http://myy.helia.fi/~a0400729/Pics/IMG%20305a.jpg

but considering the alternative looks like this:

http://myy.helia.fi/~a0400729/Pics/IMG%20306.jpg

I can't complain and I don't see how it's any kind of good reason to boycott the release. But hey, their loss.

gaara-chan May 16, 2006 05:02 AM

I'm just glad I'm able to buy the volumes from bol.com only a little while after they're released in the US.

Also, the translations in Yotsuba&! are pretty much similar to Momoto's, so that's a plus. Fortunately, compared to the Azumanga translations (of which some parts were very poor, IMO), the jokes are more easily to pick up and don't leave you with that "WTF How is this funny =/" feeling.

I can't wait for volume 4 ;_;

wakarukaya May 24, 2006 02:35 AM

Does anyone know who translates it or if theres a certain channel that distributes it?

Yotsuba manga. Getto !

hikarub May 24, 2006 02:43 PM

I started buying the manga as well after reading the scanslations. The overall quality of the book is much better of course, but I've started to feel some of the translation really doesn't seem to work. It could be because, to me, the translations done by A-M and others are more true to the original content of the manga, whereas ADV decided to change things so that the humor would be more obvious to western readers.

Stuff like: "Thank you, bishoujo Fuuka-chan!" being translated by ADV as "Thank you, Fuka! You're sooo attractive, Fuka!!" seems weird to say the least.

The one that really gets to me though is in chapter 7, volume 1. When Fuuka asks Yotsuba what her father's job is, Yotsuba mistakenly tells her that her father is a "konyakuya" (a maker of traditional snacks) when in actuality he's a "honyakuka" (a translator). ADV changed it so that instead of a "translator", Yotsuba tells Fuuka that her father is a "train spotter". WTF?! How does that work?! Because later in chapter 24 I'm not sure how Fuuka and Koiwai's conversation in the supermarket will go, since Fuuka is still under the misbelief that he's a konyakuya....

Anyways, I'll be getting volume 3 in about a week's time. Does anyone know when ADV will be releasing volume 4? I can't even find any Yotsubato! manga listed on their website!!!

map car man words telling me to do things May 26, 2006 07:45 PM

JUMBO BEAM!

So someone over at Chiyochan.net has translated Chapter 31.

Note that this a single individual, so if you want the best quality scanlations, I suggest waiting for more "official" groups, but for simply reading while we wait, this was fine. And what a completely wonderful chapter it was too, so good <3

Sirmackerel Jun 14, 2006 07:44 PM

I'm bumping this because I finally caved in and downloaded Yotsuba scanslations. Cursed ADV Manga has basically left Yotsuba (and many other good titles, like Gunslinger Girl) in limbo. I'll definitely buy up volumes 4 and beyond if ADV Manga ever releases them here...

"The one that really gets to me though is in chapter 7, volume 1. How does it not work? Although I do realize that ADV screwed themselves over for Chapter 24, it seems very obvious to me why they changed the joke in the first place; "chef" of "cook" sounds nothing like "translator" in English, whereas "train spotter" does. Would you rather have ADV leave the Japanese terms in and not translate things?

Actually, yes. I'm sure it would've been easier to leave the original terms in there and just add the notes at the bottom of the page. The scanslation made much more sense that way. This may be the reason why ADV aren't releasing volume 4 yet, they're too busy trying to figure out how to "fix" this monumental cock-up. Or would they skip chapter 24 altogther?!

I just read ADV's volume 3 and I have a major gripe about it. In the final chapter (chapter 21) they've pretty much fucked up with the names and translation......
Spoiler:
......when reunited with her father, Yotsuba says to Ena & Miura: "Festivals are dangerous! You'd better watch out, Ena and Fuka!!". Now how the hell did they fuck that up?! And at the very end, suppposedly Yotsuba asks Ena if Asagi and Fuka are also watching the fireworks somewhere out there, and Ena agrees they must be. However, ADV have made it so that Yotsuba asks, "Asagi and Fuka, are you watching?" and Ena replies, "Yes, I am!"......WTF.....?

The volume was funny but sometimes ADV screw us over....

I do agree that ADV Manga's long hiatus is inexcusable, as well as random name/grammar mistakes like the ones you mentioned (it reeks of sloppiness), but what you said earlier is my point exactly. Scanslators can get away with leaving jokes in Japanese and using cultural and/or definition footnotes because they don't actually have to sell anything. However, companies like Viz and ADV Manga have to try to sell things to both the mainstream and the fringe. They can't risk shunning the mainstream with Japanese jokes that would go over most people's heads (even with footnotes).

I won't push this any further, since I don't want an argument to potentially break out in a Yotsuba topic. I apologize for my initial inflammatory post, and thus will take my leave.

map car man words telling me to do things Jun 17, 2006 05:01 PM

One of the best manga's I've read in a long time. It sorta makes you remind you of your own childhood(not a good thing if you had a bad one..) I've noticed.. ADV is severly behind in releasing the manga. Kinda stopped at Vol.3(if more are already released, then damn where the hell have I been?), I pray that they didn't stop distirbuting this amazing series. My favorite chapter was the chicada. The look on Fuka's Mom was priceless.:D

Hatter106 Jun 20, 2006 08:50 PM

I hope this series continues for a long time... Azuma doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get them anywhere, though, so hopefully it'll continue well beyond Azumanga Daioh' four volumes. When I first saw that series, I thought it was the epitome of charming "slice-of-life" material, but man, Yotsuba just blows it out of the water. For all its wacky humour, it truly is founded in realistic family behaviour. And I can't stress enough how much Azuma's art has progressed since the early days of Azumanga.

hikarub Jun 28, 2006 04:42 AM

I've heard a disturbing rumor (even more disturbing if it's true) that ADV have quietly dropped Yotsuba. Has anyone else heard this? I haven't really paid much attention to ADV Manga before Yostsuba, but I heard the same thing happened to Peacemaker Kurogane as well. Has ADV Manga always been this unreliable?

What are the chances of Yotsuba being picked up by someone else, like Viz or Tokyopop?

:eyebrow:

Keios Jun 28, 2006 05:59 AM

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it were true.

Quote:

It certainly seemed like a promising idea at the time. When ADV, already a proven market leader in anime, announced that it was expanding to become a manga publisher in 2003, the expectation was that the company could carve its own niche, perhaps even making a dent in the sales of Viz and Tokyopop. ADV President and CEO John Ledford told ICv2.com in 2004 that the company had licensed more than 1,000 volumes of manga and Korean manhwa.

Indeed, the company has carved its own niche ... but for all the wrong reasons. Analysis of an animeondvd.com database and Diamond Comics shipping lists shows that out of 79 series the company has announced since 2003, 43 have been canceled outright or put on indefinite hiatus. Another 11 were announced in 2004 but never released.

Was it a case of too much too soon, or a gross overestimation of what the market could bear? We can neither confirm nor deny what exactly happened, and repeated efforts to contact the company were unsuccessful.

For its part, ADV has tried to get back in the good graces of manga fans in recent months, completing "Full Metal Panic" and "Full Metal Panic: Overload," continuing "Chrono Crusade" and "Cromartie High School" and rolling out "angel/dust," "Lagoon Engine Einsatz," "Anne Freaks" and "Evangelion: Angelic Days." But we have to admit we're a bit skeptical.
This is from starbulletin.com

So, they've most likely dropped it.

tsuchiiru Jun 28, 2006 09:32 AM

i've been reading the manga for quite a while now, and it's been easy to like ever since. yotsuba's innocence can make enough humor to supply the series. a must-read, definitely.

map car man words telling me to do things Jun 28, 2006 03:51 PM

I like to think they've forgotten about it for a while and will continue it once they realise the error of their ways. Seriously, what the hell is that crap they churn out while overlooking Yotsuba? Lagoon Engine Einsatz?

Anne Freaks was completely awful, and I don't understand why anyone would waste their time reading, much less commercially releasing it =/

This is terrible, I've missed so many chapters even though I tried to look for any news on updates ;_;

Anyway, downloaded the torrent that had 1-37, threw out 1-32 and 37 and uploaded 33-36 to rapidshare for anyone who hasn't read them yet.
Anyone wondering why I threw out 37, you can view a few posts up. Basically, someone thought it would be "hilarious" to write in mock ye olde english and the results were dreadfully unfunny. Please don't waste time with that release and wait for a proper 37 instead.

Updating the first post right after this.

The beach story was absolutely adorable, but I was laughing with tears in my eyes at the recycling chapter. That little cat figurine she uses to calm herself down, the whole idea and execution of the gag was just brilliant ='D

Whoever decides to pick it up should probably start from the very beginning. At least that way they can redo and avoid ADV's major cock-up in volume 1 and their silly mistakes with characters' names in volume 3. It's such a disappointment after reading the scanslations, that publishers can make such mistakes. Don't they have someone to proofread?

By the way, I'm seriously missing out here. Better get chapters 33-36 before they disappear!!!

That PaniPoni Yotsuba flash is the coolest thing I have ever seen.

slayer25k Aug 1, 2006 09:28 AM

Ok - back to the Manga:

TOKYOPOP will release the Yotsuba&! Manga in Germany - release date of part 1 will be around March 2007 - I'm really looking forward to it... I'm exited about to see how the translation works ;)

Muramasa007 Aug 1, 2006 07:25 PM

Hey! Coeccias! could u tell me the irc channel? thnx

coeccias Aug 2, 2006 01:23 AM

#lurk is on irc.irchighway.net, but you will find the bot listings at gotlurk.net.

map car man words telling me to do things Aug 2, 2006 01:51 PM

Alright, added coeccias' link to the updated chapter list. Much <3

The bike chapter was hilarious. I love that scene of all three riding along the the high road. 38 made me feel ;_; though. Have to see what terrible things will follow from all this.

PiccoloNamek Aug 2, 2006 04:37 PM

Aww. T.T

I'm sure everything will be just fine. This is Yotsuba, after all.

Muramasa007 Aug 3, 2006 02:58 PM

ADV is getting lazy...they haven't updated anything on Yotsuba for awhile now...T_T

Mango Aug 6, 2006 12:56 PM

Yotsuba really is wonderful.

I've uploaded the Image Album onto Megaupload; Blah's site always seems to be 'FORBIDDEN'. Luckily, I was able to download it from the site at the right time. Here it is:

megaupload.com/?d=AUFXFBIR

.rar size: ~188MB

lemonmanko Aug 6, 2006 11:37 PM

wondering when the next vol of Yotsuba coming out?

ADV answered the question at Otakon recently

Quote:

When questioned about the release of the next volume of Yotsuba@!, Williams replied that it is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of 2007.stolen from ANN
hell yeah i thought they forgot about this great manga

Muramasa007 Aug 7, 2006 02:52 PM

I hope there will be a manga group that colors Yotsuba, that would be kinda neat =D

This is quite lovely news (I went to read the rest at ANN). It IS a pretty long wait, considering how long it's been since the third book, but at least they haven't abandoned the series. We'll always have scanlations to read till then, so I don't mind. I always buy the books anyway.

Skaijo Sep 5, 2006 07:03 AM

What a shame, I just made a yotsuba episode animation entirely in flash but I don't have enough posts to show it here. Shame shame... :(

We can always remove the url later and have you repost it if you so wish. I can host it for you if it's not uploaded anywhere.

*currently adding profile info... >_<

I can see your a really nice person. <3

The animation in question is more of just a one page spoof of the manga and certainly not demanding of special treatment. If I only need to post what I'm assuming to be 10 times in order to showcase a link here in this thread, I can gladly wait.

FatsDomino Sep 5, 2006 12:20 PM

Well if your latest project linked in your sig is any indicator Qwarky and I would definitely edit your posts for you to allow html links in here. Post your links away. =D

Hell, I'd even host it for ya if you'd like. I host other Yotsubato parody animations already.

coeccias Sep 5, 2006 01:21 PM

Chapter 39 has been added to the new releases bot on #lurk, but as always, here's a link. Not as funny as others have been, but Yotsubato is still enjoyable as always. I especially liked the facial expressions in this chapter.

Scarletdeath Sep 5, 2006 01:35 PM

This chapter ended in the middle of nowhere ;_;

Also, thanks coeccias!

FatsDomino Sep 5, 2006 01:37 PM

That was fun. Looks like it'll set things up for more shenanigans in the next chapter. =)

Skaijo Sep 5, 2006 02:32 PM

What a sweet chapter. It's kinda sad how Fuuka tends to be on the brunt side of the humor, but the Yotsuba/Fuuka chapters are my fav combination all the same.

Scarletdeath Sep 5, 2006 02:56 PM

Fuuka's expression when she was made the joke was priceless. Someone should make an av/sig out of that. ='D

Skaijo Sep 5, 2006 06:20 PM

We'll I decieded I'm a bigger fan of all things Yotsuba than all things forum posting. I still can't post my Yots&! animation in a post, but I left a link in my sig.

It's a stupid thing my friend and I made on labor day.

FatsDomino Sep 5, 2006 06:52 PM

Feel free to stick around then. We could always use another Yotsubato fan and someone who knows how to have fun with flash. I'm terrible at flash.

Skaijo Sep 5, 2006 07:11 PM

I thought the starfish .swf was pretty damn funny. It's certainly passable on Newgrounds, you should try to submit it there. I'd bump up the frame rate a bit, but you're a solid animator in my book.

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 11, 2006 12:32 PM

I recently found some Try Try Try webcomics, which have been translated by Sparky Manga. They're not the same as the Try Try Try oneshot that's linked in the first post (though I'll add these to the list as well)

According to the readme file:
Quote:

In July 2001, Pioneer released a book entitled Azumanga Two, featuring a comics by Azuma Kiyohiko. Along with the book came bundled two small, one-episode comics (Wallaby and Try! Try! Try!), and a bonus CD. Azuma went on to create the very successful Azumanga Daioh, but this series has nothing to do with Azumanga Two, apart from sharing the same creator.

Try! Try! Try! went on to become the series Yotsubato!, which is currently being serialised in the monthly Japanese magazine Dengeki Daioh. It tells the story of a small green-haired girl (Yotsuba) and her father, after they have moved to a new neighbourhood. They soon befriend the three Ayase sisters living next door, and much hilarity ensues.

The two short Try! Try! Try! comics in this file are 'webcomics' from the bonus CD that came with Azumanga Two. They were given silly episode numbers to represent the fact that they're just little bonus episodes. The first, Episode -1: Ena-chan's mishap, tells the story of an interesting discovery made by Ayase Ena. The second, Try! Try! Try! Fractional Episode, is a nice story about the different characters' reactions to Yotsuba's mischief.
The humor is not quite as warm as in the manga proper, but the pages are still a lot of fun, especially Episode -1

(Fuuka's and Asagi's haircolors are omega weird though since I'm so used to the manga ='D)

Uploaded here

Scarletdeath Sep 11, 2006 12:42 PM

Thanks Q~!

The hair color is friggin' weird. Why can't they stick to black and dyed-blonde

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 11, 2006 12:43 PM

Well, this was before Azuma started the manga, so the hair colors had not been finalized (or maybe this isn't even an official coloring, not sure). Either way, Fuuka with red hair was bizarro :tpg:

Scarletdeath Sep 11, 2006 01:11 PM

I've just read it; so short ;___;

Chairman Kaga Sep 13, 2006 07:02 AM

Thanks Qwarky and everyone else for this. I didn't understand what the fuss was all about when everyone started using avatars of a girl with 4-leaf-clover-like hair. But now, I've jumped on the Yotsuba bandwagon.

Little did I know I find it addictive - I was up to like episode 18 before I realised it.

Qwarky, Blah - The Image Album link does not work.

Admiral Amara Sep 13, 2006 08:06 AM

Those little "Try! Try! Try!" shorts certainly weren't on par with "Yotsuba!&", but then again, they were the first attempts at the characters and situations. They're still cute, for certain, particularly when Ena thought her Hamster was eaten, and it shows up on the front door mat - that moment in particular foreshadows best what the series would become. The kind of "cute pandemonium" with such simple resolutions overlooked until the last couple panels.

fireball87 Sep 15, 2006 06:36 PM

I may say this is the best yotsubato topic i've ever seen, i've been following this manga for a little while now and it is easily my favorite (i don't read alot of manga though)... Just want to say thanks for keeping this topic up to date though, as it seems pretty hard to find the current fan translators who are few and far between (plus the image album was nice too ^^).

Overall i just joined the forum to say that, other then finding this when doing a yotsubato search again (and checking it for updates every once in awhile), i really don't have time for more forums :P.

Dan!! Sep 17, 2006 12:56 AM

I've really enjoyed Yotsuba so far.
Just to let you know, there's a collection of everything on 4chan.biz. Chapters 34 and 35 aren't too good on there, though (from what I know). But you can get 1-37 + trytrytry together off megaupload here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CJFMWGE0
And Azuma has his own worksafe image board on chiyochan.net, if anyone is particularly interested. It's a good way to keep up on the translations.
I'm quite annoyed by this URL/image rule.

Edit: there ya go

Muramasa007 Sep 19, 2006 08:30 PM

Yotsuba is great, I can't wait for the next chapter!

Skaijo Sep 22, 2006 10:20 AM

I'm reading over Azuma's diary entry as of the 17th of this month and it sounds like he's pretty confident that Yotsuba will be an anime in the future. There working on new music too.

FatsDomino Sep 22, 2006 10:50 AM

I hope they don't turn into an anime before he's done with the series though. Or at least they only do what they've given him for like a season. I'd hate for an incomplete series especially of such a gem as Yotsubato.

how would he finish off this series? it could go on for ages and Yotsuba could very well grow up during the timeline

i doubt it but it could happen
me on the other hand would love for yotsubato to become a anime soon
it could insanely have fillers and i wouldn't care cause its so cute and carefree

FatsDomino Sep 23, 2006 08:01 AM

I'm just saying I'd rather that they do a season at a time every year ala School Rumble, Genshiken, and Rozen Maiden than being impatient and fillering up the joint. If the show does indeed go on for years then having just one season each year that covers the events in the manga would be much better than having a show that doesn't know where to go because it's run out of origin material. In fact, a continuously released OVA series wouldn't be a bad idea for Yotsubato. That way when it's ready it's ready. I'm sure Azuma will be there to make sure it all works out.

Amayirot Akago Sep 23, 2006 12:03 PM

Fantastic to see so much love for Yotsuba here :D Myself being a huge Azumanga fan I inevitably came across Yotsuba and immediately got the three ADV volumes. Purchase of the year, I'd say :D Yotsuba is like a mix of Chiyo's cuteness, Osaka's brain and Tomo's boundless energy, creating a highly explosive and hilarious mix of cuteness ^_^

Can't wait for the next volumes. Hurry up ADV!

And I cannot put enough emphasis on how this should be made into an anime. The image album was a step in the right direction though; love the tunes on there. They fit the manga very well, plus I love the little sound effects they worked into the songs.

coeccias Sep 23, 2006 02:17 PM

Any day that I stumble across a new Yotsubato chapter on #lurk is a good day. Chapter 40 really shows Azuma's ability as an artist. I was impressed by the visuals. Combine that with the awesome humor and you have a great chapter.

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 23, 2006 03:15 PM

That bridge scene was scary =o
Even though it was such a funny and sweet chapter all in all, the ending still made me ;___;
Poor Yotsuba-chan.

Either way, updating the first post again, thanks for the link as usual!

Scarletdeath Sep 23, 2006 07:31 PM

Oh snap, 40 is out! Downloading right now. Thanks for the update as usual coeccias! ^^

fireball87 Sep 23, 2006 10:45 PM

Heh, this chapter did a good job of wrapping up the last episode. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Spoiler:
Yotsuba should just be glad that those highschoolers wern't anything like the azumanga highschoolers (ironically enough, once she made it into the highschool i was thinking azumanga, i mean the books falling on yotsuba seemed like a clear throwback to me). Great chapter though.

(ironically enough, i first read/watched azumanga cause i enjoyed yotsubato so much, plus i knew it was supposibly pretty good. honestly though i think yotsubato is so much better)

--edit-- oh, forum supports spoiler tags, i didn't notice that before, good ol spoiler tags. I don't know that you'd really concider that a spoiler, but it kindof is.

Chapter 40 is a funny chapter! and one scene reminded me of Azumanga! Can't wait for another chapter ^^

Skaijo Sep 26, 2006 06:42 AM

The ending killed me in laughs...

Spoiler:
It's nice to see that Yotsuba gets punished when she takes her privilages too far. I hated the lack of punishment in so many other kids books. Anyone remember Madeline--the girl who could turn France upside down and still be the number one-love child of her adoptive family? Or what about Curious George--the destructive monkey that can do no wrong? It makes me happy to see Yotsuba get reprimanded, such actions even strengthen the bond between she and her father.

Spoiler:
Ah yes, but just a note, i don't think this is actually a kids book, though it may be spot on for people who like to act like kids, or most everyone else for that matter. From what i can tell (by japanese marketing atleast) the actual target audence seems to be teenage to college males (seing that its another daioh). Fans of the series is a much much larger (from who i've shown, i know few who dislike it) group of people (but i have yet to show it to a kid :P).

mastermind Oct 1, 2006 03:51 PM

I've always had 30+ something chapters stored on my hard drive. I kept telling myself "Oh, I think I'll read this eventually" but I still haven't gotten around to it.

Maybe I'll start soon.

Skaijo Oct 20, 2006 11:07 AM

Oye... *suffering from Yotsubato withdrawl...

It must be a long chapter Azuma's working on. Manga of that quality really does take such a long time to make.

fireball87 Oct 20, 2006 01:45 PM

Yeah, i've been checking back hoping for another fix, i tend to have withdraws every month or so, and check out the usual yotsubato sources frequently when i do. I think i'm just going to read the revenge chapter again.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 28, 2006 02:02 PM

It's not just you, it seems as though they don't like direct linking to the page (even though it wasn't a direct link to the download itself). I've fixed it and hopefully this works better now.

EDIT:
Seems as though the whole site is now having trouble so I'm hosting the chapter myself.

hikarub Oct 29, 2006 03:04 AM

Thanks, Qwarky!! :D

Yeah, this was a funny chapter. Yanda sure appears sparingly throughout the series. This is his what, only 2nd appearance in 6 volumes? Hope we get to see more of him. I anticipate a massive battle of wits later on. LOL!!

Spoiler:
The "under discipline" sign was cute as hell!! And Yotsuba eating her hamburger in front of Yanda was funny too!

Skaijo Oct 30, 2006 11:16 AM

I know the translators will hate me for bringing this up, but I think they got Yotsuba's last line wrong. The phrase felt to me like it should have been more along the lines of "You're too gracious!" or "Bless you!"

"Okay" in huge bolded text may not have been the best choice (unless if she actually said it in English). I also didn't like the "where's my sweater" comment or some other between the panels. That was just distracting.

That aside, it was a wonderful chapter.

Bigblah Oct 30, 2006 12:22 PM

I think Qwarky will greatly appreciate the news that a new Yotsubato music album "Winter General" will be released at the end of November. Same staff as last time.

I sure hope we get at least a full "year" in the manga. Actually, what I'd love is for it to go into next fall where she starts school for the first time. But I'll gladly take whatever Azuma wants to give us. :D

Azuma just updated his blog with a link to the new Yotsuba&! calendar at Amazon. About the only things I can make out of his post are the release dates for the new album and Vol. 6.

(I keep hoping one day I'll surf over there to find the announcement that "We are finally making Yotsuba&! into an anime series!" Which when run through an online translator, will come out as "The certain thing is horse chestnut upcoming we produce." Hooray for Babelfish, your Portal to the Land of Wind and Ghosts.)

Here it is the place, renewal is stagnant. Well it is usual thing, but. After the summer, there being preparation in various ways, all the way it is full with work. From now on extending through the winter, it meaning that the side comes out, we ask may.

It's been a while since I've updated around here. That's usual, I guess. Now that Summer's over, there are lots of preparations to make, and a ton of work to do. Winter's coming, and I wish you and yours the best.

I now present the 2007 calendar, which was made in collaboration with KAKUTA Miho-san. Now on sale at Amazon and Anime-mate. You can probably get it at Tora-no-ana. It's fan rank is higher than last year's, I think.

It's finally here. November 22, the Kuricorder Pops Orchestra's second "Yotsuba&♪" release. It's a musical suite of "Jack Frost". Yotsuba is genki in winter, too.

Then on December 16, "Yotsuba&" volume 6 comes out. At that same time, the Yotsuba picture book "Yotsuba& Black and White Animals" also comes out.

Later, "Yotsuba 2007 day calendar" comes out. You can't buy it yet, but they've started to take pre-orders.

That's the schedule so far. I'll update you on the details as they become available. For now, I'm still working on volume 6. Ah, but a few days ago I was dragged off for a break. I took a much-loved airplane trip to go see the horse chestnuts. I'll say more about that next time.

I also noticed that at the end of Yotsuba chapter 41, that chapter 42 won't be out until the Feb 2007 issue of Dengeki Daioh(電撃大王), which hits store shelves December 21, 2006.

Amazon.co.jp international shipping usually costs around US$30, so I guess I'll wait until the end of December to order everything at once.

I was wondering where this animation came from.

looks like an OP to me of some kind (probably a music CD or something, worth a keeper tho').

Yeah, that's the Pani Poni Dash OP flash parody that's been around somewhat (and posted here). Nothing official, unfortunately, but awesome regardless, and this video quality is terrific <3

HOORAY~! finally a thread which is dedicated to this manga XD Yotsubato is just pure gold... >.< one scene I always love, one of the beginning chapters where Yotsuba is investigating the swings XD

I come bearing news, 4chan.biz the new cd up for download, downloading now ^^.

http://4chan.biz/music/CD02.html

--edit--

Personally i don't think its as good as the last one, Then again, it does have some really good parts so I'll have to listen to both a few times before i decide. It covers the entire winter as opposed to the first one which covered one summer day, which i can't say i like as much, but i understand. To its favor i guess alot of what i liked about the original was comparing it to the manga, and since i can't do that its a bit harder for me to relate it to yotsubato as opposed to just a decent winter themed symphonic peace.

There is one thing i can say though, out of all of the soundtracks for manga/anime, these are still high on my list.

map car man words telling me to do things Dec 3, 2006 01:53 PM

I was just listening to this yesterday.

Especially Spring Cleaning on New Year's Eve is wonderful. It's an interesting contrast to say the least, that Winter General covers the whole winter as opposed to one single day. It's probably not as immediately catchy as the first album, but there's already a number of pieces that have grown on me.

Most of all, I can't wait for the manga to get to winter. Should be wonderful times.

I really loved it myself. I tended to appreciate the peices that had a larger set of instruments playing at once, but otherwise it was really nice. It certainly had some cherishable moments and I'll be keeping those songs on my computer for years to come.

I can't wait to get back home and give it another lesson--I'll be even happier once I have the manga to accompany it!

fireball87 Dec 6, 2006 01:15 AM

I've listened to it about 6 times this week, and i think i like it a bit more then i did the first time i listened to it. I do find these things are pretty effective at putting you in a good mood, they're pretty light hearted and fun (as opposed to alot of orchestra, when tends to focus on the more depressing side of the music) so it really fits the manga pretty well.

Trigunnerz Dec 6, 2006 11:43 PM

I just started listening to it. Sure reminds of the music from Azumanga.

Is Yotsuba able to lactate...?

map car man words telling me to do things Dec 14, 2006 04:32 AM

Erm.. I don't think five year olds lactate just yet. Pretty sure she will be able after a decade or so, not that I want to think about that.

I'm just... brainstorming stuff for something I'm making. It's not really related to Yotsuba but I'm just thinking up what this thing would be like with someone like her in it.

But if you really want to know, well... I can't really discuss it in this thread, I don't wanna derail it too much.

Yotsubato! is awesome. I love those slice of life mangas and Yotsubato! is right up there. Couldn't wait for ADV to release volume 4 so I've been reading the scans. You shoulda seen my happy dance when I found these forums. Qwarky can you reupload chapter 40? The download expired on rapidshare and I can't get onto #lurk for some reason. Thanks so much!

Now if I can only find some scans for Genshiken. Volume 8 isn't supposed to come out in NA until March '07 while Volume 9 comes out in Japan next week.

fireball87 Dec 15, 2006 11:51 PM

http://4chan.biz/ has em all, so until qwarky re uploads, you can find it here.

fireball87 Dec 25, 2006 11:56 PM

Aye i saw it... pretty good episode, though not as good as i'm used to... half due to the translation being a bit worse quality (in my opinion) then most of them (they translated a few things a bit oddly i think, things like "thats fraud" probably should have been "thats a lie" or "tout" probably should have been just "tight" especially considering the age group of the people talking/being talked to) well that and
Spoiler:
I never really made those cup phones, i know i've done it before, but they never really interested me

elle rita Dec 27, 2006 01:01 AM

They only really work if you use cans instead of cups anyway.

The highlight for me, of course, was Fuuka freaking out the second Asagi walked in. "NO I AM NOT TALKING DIRTY TO MR. KOIWAI THROUGH A CUP PHONE STOP IMPLYING THAT I'LL KILL YOU!" And Asagi's reaction was just perfect. :)

Dee Dec 28, 2006 01:46 AM

Somehow I wonder if Fuuka has a thing for Koiwai, but that just borders on gross (since the age difference is so great).

I'm pretty sure Fuuka got just generally flustered as usual. It's not the first time she's been found by Asagi in this kind of situation. Then again, her reaction in the TryTryTry oneshot to Yotsuba's questioning might hint at something, but I don't think Azuma would bother. At least not yet, what with her age and everything.

Yeah, though I'm still thinking it's more a general fluster, since Asagi tends to be.. well you know. Fuuka is pretty serious about how she appears after all =P

I have volume's 1-3 of Yotsuba&!. I've been dying to read 4-6, but they are only in Japanese ( ; _ ; ) Anyone know when they are coming out in the US? I tried to go to the 4chan.biz site, but when I tried to download the chapters, the files couldn't be found. Does anyone know of any other sites that have Yotusba&! scans?

Peace

fireball87 Jan 4, 2007 02:28 AM

If at first you don't succeed, try again in a few days, i just checked a few random episodes on 4chan.biz and they work fine... if that fails, look at the first post in this topic to find some rapishares (which are well more likely to be down).

Skaijo Jan 8, 2007 02:30 PM

So someone help me out here. Is there some sort of one-sided romantic affiar going on in Fuuka's mind? I only mention this with the support from Fuuka's admittance on liking Mr. Kowai in Try! Try! Try! I doubt Azuma will develop it any futrther as anything out of Yotsuba's sights isn't really focused on anyway--but I am noticing a trend.

fireball87 Jan 8, 2007 07:53 PM

Hmm... yeah, seems that way to me, though try try try isn't exactly what i would consider canon. Heck, its arguable if try try try's Fuuka is the same person. (different personality, obvious style difference, etc.) Not to mention the fact that they don't even have the same name... though 風夏 and 風香 do sound the same (blame me knowing that on wikipedias entry).

As for a one-sided romantic affair i've seen crushes that make much less since, at least its not Yanda... heh.

parKbench Jan 8, 2007 08:43 PM

I keep trying the 4biz websight to get the new chapters of Yotsubato, but it keeps coming up "file not found" whenever I try to download it ( ; _ ; ) Does anyone know another websight. I've googled "Yotsuba manga scans" and I can't find a single sight.

Hm-hm, indeed! I bow down to you, sir. Excellent points. Maybe I should just point out a reference to the first couple of chapters in Yotsubato! especially when Fuuka was trapped in the Kowai's bathroom door (I hope that's not a spoiler). Her expression and outbursts when confronted by Asagi seemed as if, in her mind, her actions implied something risque.

Iuno--Fuuka is just an oddball, in my mind. Maybe I'm the crazy one.

Skaijo Jan 23, 2007 09:12 AM

Wow! Earlier than usual, or maybe it's just me. Thanks for the heads up!

fireball87 Jan 23, 2007 03:16 PM

I think its a bit later then usual, seeing as i normally get it a few days after the FMA translation. Then again that was a day or so early this year, so maybe it was right on time.

I thought this one seemed like 2 separate mini episodes for some reason. Anyway
Spoiler:
Yeah, this seemed to build up the next episode quite a bit, though i seriously wonder why Ena curled up in a ball, strange that. Not as strange as actually riding a mono-cycle anywhere, those things are hard to get to move. From my experience with the things (monocycles that is) Yotsubas going to get at least one chance to get somewhat injured in the next episode, especially considering shes still on training wheels on her bike.
Overall it was a good episode though like always.

Dan!! Jan 24, 2007 01:26 AM

Not really my favorite chapter, nothing really happened (or less than usual anyway).
Spoiler:
Apparently a unicycle trend started in Japan recently. I thought that the "curl up in a ball" thing was a translator-note worthy joke, assuming she read it wrong. =/ I thought Yotsuba's pose when she saw the building was funny, but I wasn't sure if there was something I wasn't getting.

I got the impression that this was one of the first translations this particular translator did, not that I'm complaining.

Spoiler:
I'm pretty sure that Yotsuba confused TOMARE with some like sounding verb that meant roll. I'm no Japanese expert, but I'm pretty sure that was the joke. I liked Miru-Miru's lying to Yotsuba about being a princess. She's even breaking school rules. I think she's even trying to set up Yotsuba for the injury. >_<

Anyone have any Grandma theories? I so no relation to Dad or Yotsuba altogether. Probably just a close and elderly friend that Yot attatched to.

fireball87 Jan 24, 2007 03:24 PM

Spoiler:
I tend to assume grandma as Mr Koiwai's mother. I tend to also assume thats the grandparents they used to live with before they moved to where they live now. (from chapter 3 about air conditioners) "Grandma didn't have one in her house huh. It was because grandpa hated them."

As for relationship between Yotsuba and Grandma, assuming the age she must have been adopted at... its quite expected that she would just consider Mr Koiwai's family as her family, just like she considers Mr Koiwai as her father. And having lived with them for some time, the connection is even stronger.

Oh, and actually, I somewhat wonder how much Yotsuba is really even aware of the adoption... even if she does know about it, it seems a rather small thing to her. Probably she hasn't figured it out yet, and no ones taken the time to explain it to her. I know a few kids that didn't know they were adopted tell they were well into their teens. Not like it really should matter too much in the current situation. Not unless one of her parents (who abandoned her) randomly shows up, but thats the kind of mellow drama crap i really am not expecting from this series.

Skaijo Jan 26, 2007 10:42 AM

Since the Yotsuba anime is inevitable, and since Azuma usually plays a key role in the sound development of his animes, does anyone have any ideas/theories of who'll make the voice act roster or wishlists for voice actors/seiyu's for the show?

I'm hoping they actually give the part of Yotsuba to a girl of similar age. Voice acting is such a big thing in Japan but it's so rare that they actually get a 30 year old woman who can decently play a 3-5 year old girl. It's even worse in Korea.

I'm thinking Yuki Matsuoka for Yotsuba--mainly because of her analogous work in Hale Nochi Guu and her close work with Azuma in Azumanga Daioh. She's one of my favorite actors--but even so, I'd much perfer the authentic sound of a young girl. She doesn't even have to be a brilliant actor--the role of Yotsuba is just one of those things you really can't mess up.

Most indeed there's just something authentic about a real young girls voice over an adult one, and on another note isnt Yuki M. the one who play the voice of Kuriko from Maburaho?

Maybe the address is wrong, it's http://4chan.biz/ then all you have to do is click on the chapter you want. I believe it'll give you a .zip file. If not, it may be .rar--which may mean that you'll have to download winRAR (which is free) but the latest version of zip should open .rar types too.

Well it's said Dengeki Daioh was originally a quarterly publication, then bimonthly, then monthly, and its name was changed to Monthly Comics Dengeki Daioh. I'm not sure at which point Azumanga was published, but it's no wonder if the schedule changed.

Do you know anything about how Azumanga Daioh was published? I'm under the impression that the comic strip was done weekly. That'd be amazing if one page of all four volumes of Azumanga took up one month of publication.

And yet another person has succumbed to the power that is Yotsuba! It's a very endearing series. Although downloading 26 chapters of it at work may not be the smartest thing to do . . .

The third chapter surprised me though. I've only read the chapter intro page but to see global warming as one of the chapters was unexpected.

Additional Spam:
Ok, just finished the third chapter . . . That was really funny. Turned a serious subject into a very funny situation. Gotta love Yotsuba. Thanks Qwarky for the links.

This was such a ridiculous chapter. I loved it. <3 So many lol moments there... omg that egg! :33:

fireball87 Mar 22, 2007 02:06 PM

Yeah, this chapter was interesting... lets cover some things i noted.

Spoiler:

1. I'd eat that cake, no matter how... odd the decoration style... minus the egg it still looks decently edible.

2. Another odd character... yay!

3. Fuuka "found someone else"... kindof ;P

4. I'd be really freaked out if someone I didn't know well walked up behind me and covered my eyes... well more then this case.

5. I'm pretty sure the guy on the last page is Mr. Ayase, so good to see him again, which is very rare. I'm really wondering the nature of his schedule, is it that he just works long day shifts, so he leaves before yotsuba(and asagi) wakes up, and gets back after shes asleep... or does he work in a different town and live somewhere else, and only go to the house on break.

6. Seeing how Shimauu seems somewhat easily embarrassed, its probable that the nickname was forced on her, (somewhat like Osaka's nickname in Azumanga... though osaka isn't easily embarrassed)

7. No new chapter next month... wah _ _.

Skaijo Mar 28, 2007 03:05 PM

Shimauu is certainly a cute addition. :3 She reminds me of an eyebrowless Fuuka. I'll certainly do some snooping in past chapters to find her.

It'd be nice to see more boys in the series. Azuma is seems to focus on gals more when dudes are way more dorky. Also, it very clever transition from Shimauu to Miss Stake. I wouldn't have thought of that and it fits nicely in my opinion. In fact, I think I'll keep that as her official nickname in my little world.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 28, 2007 03:18 PM

I for one would love to "see behind the translation" so to speak and find out what exactly was Yotsuba's nickname for Torako to make the translater use "Tigey". Tora-bo maybe?

Ryuu Apr 11, 2007 11:08 PM

I haven't read Yotsuba in AGES.

I finally got 31-45, so that's what I'm working on right now. Ah... the awesome, how I've missed this.

anele Apr 20, 2007 01:07 AM

can someone explain to me how to d/l the chapters from 4chan.biz? everytime i try i automatically get sent to a 403 forbidden page...am i missing something? if i rightclick to save, i get a leech.html file...

fireball87 Apr 20, 2007 08:13 PM

Very strange... i've still had no problems with it.

I just verified its working in both Firefox and IE, so I'm kindof at a loss for what could be causing that.

I'm going into withdrawal with no chapter this month... wah.

anele Apr 22, 2007 10:47 PM

*tears* i don't know what's wrong with my computer that i can't d/l yotsuba from the 4chan site...does anyone know where else i could get the scans? i only have up to episode 37...

fireball87 Apr 23, 2007 07:50 AM

I'll rapid share the whole set, or put it up on my private ftp (though very temporarily if that, i'll send you a pm or something) or something, whatever feels easier when i get back from class.

--edit-- the whole set as I know it, i just through the series, and had winrar sort parting it, so expect things to end pretty abruptly if you don't get all 3 parts.

Yotsubato vol. 4 is finally being released by ADV. In this month's Previews, and is scheduled for release in July or so.

fireball87 May 24, 2007 01:00 PM

After a 2 month hiatus, the time has finally come... new yotsubato at 4chan.biz

It felt a bit short (though it wasn't, a bit longer then normal, probably just a side effect of missing a month)... but it was pretty funny, ramen was involved, so thats always a plus.

map car man words telling me to do things May 24, 2007 01:46 PM

GAAA!!

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...ato46_02-1.jpg

What an awesome chapter, but I feel sorry for dad now in the next chapter ;_;

EDIT:
Seems like 4chan.biz is down (probably flooded with hits) a bit, meanwhile, use the rapidshare/megaupload someone's uploaded:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HH41ZJJ4

Boo-kun May 24, 2007 03:34 PM

Noooo chili ramen ;_;

I thought I were behind many chapters, but only the newest it seems.. great things come slow ;_;

rfwu May 27, 2007 08:55 PM

Is it just me or does the girl who gave Yotsuba the florescent tube look a lot like an older Osaka? She does have that blank look on her face on page 13.

Speaking of cameos, the girl from chapter 32 (Yotsuba and rain) on page 15 reacts to Yotsuba's cuteness a lot like Sakaki does. Am I going crazy?

fireball87 May 28, 2007 02:55 AM

I kindof assume its more artistic style then a cameo. Theres been a few obvious reference, so i don't consider minor ones as much.

Three Examples I can think of.
1. Wallaby girl shows up in Azumanga
2. Books fall on yotsubato at high school.
3. Cat ("chiyo's father") can be seen on fukkas shirt (and a comment about fukkas taste is made).
4. Cat with Kitten is a prize at the carnival (with the fireworks).

Thats all I can recall at the moment... a double check on wikipedia lists the same references and no more... but there probably are a few.

rfwu May 28, 2007 01:26 PM

Ahh, it would be great if it was a subtle cameo! But I agree that it's a stretch.

Another cameo thought... what about that policewoman? Tomo did wear that exact same outfit for the costume race.

I'm told that I can't post images for comparison yet. That's too bad. I found a bunch that look really similar.

map car man words telling me to do things May 29, 2007 09:45 AM

Well the policewoman is wearing it for her work and it makes sense to use the same design, so I wouldn't count it as a cameo. If Azuma had made Azumanga after Yotsuba, perhaps.

Skaijo Jun 8, 2007 08:29 AM

I read this chapter last week and then consecutively for each day until now and it's still a riot. This is, in my book, the best chapter yet. Golden Week must have treated Azuma pretty well.

On a side note, I'm making another Yot flash. It's called Metal Gear Yotsuba. It's destined to be the best MGS/Yotsubato crossover tribute EVER.

Kilroy Jun 8, 2007 08:47 AM

I've read the entire thread, and now I feel obliged to read this Yotsuba thing.

Fuck you guys. This is, quite possibly, the best thing I've ever read. Cute manga is Cuuuuute~

fireball87 Jun 30, 2007 04:09 PM

Just here to note that the new yotsubato chapter has been out in japan for awhile, and in my withdrawal period, (looking through every yotsuba related resource i know looking for translations) I found there is an early (but completed translation).

Its here
http://rapidshare.com/files/39922889...English_v1.zip

Its a really good chapter,
Spoiler:
with lots of yanda fight, wootah
that i think you'll all enjoy ^^.

Other notes that should be made is that Skaijo finished and put up Metal Gear Yotsuba which is definitely a visit (don't ask me why it wasn't already posted, but whatever... I'm looking at you Skaijo ;P).

Spoiler:
Jumbo seems to be able to palm yandas entire head, thats pretty impressive ;P.

A friend of mine (who even out-otakus me) said that Azuma stated that he didn't want to turn Yotsubato! into an anime as that would destroy the innocence of the manga. I'm really hoping he's wrong.

Metal Gear Yotsuba was uploaded on Youtube without me even knowing. xD

Yeah, I've not seen that statement, may look into it if i ever have free time again. I would very much like a well done adaption of Yot, but if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen.

Yeah, MGY re-appears on the Yotsuba radar relatively often. (once or twice a month currently) It's pretty popular I'd say... hopefully winning a few metal-gear fans over to the yotsu-cause, which still feels fairly underrated round here.

As for the yotsu-doll, I normally avoid spending money on such things, but seeing as its been my avatar for quite some time everywhere, I may see it a worthwhile investment for my desk.

Skaijo Aug 8, 2007 11:56 AM

I'm actually glad that no one else heard him say that either. I'm really hoping to see an animated version sponsored by the original author in the future.

hikarub Aug 14, 2007 04:16 AM

Well, just read ADV's volume 4 of the manga. Supposedly that in-joke concerning Koiwai's occupation comes back in the supermarket (remember in volume 1 they made Yotsuba tell Fuka that his job was a trainspotter?). Well, they totally ignored that and went with the original dialogue that meant he was mistaken to be a konyakuya. So, basically, they pretended the cock-up in volume 1 never happened, leaving readers who never read the scanslations to scratch their heads in confusion.

Man, why can't they take this shit seriously? They've still got grammatical errors and stuff as well....

:cussing:

fireball87 Aug 16, 2007 02:07 AM

Their ADV, its their job to screw around with my favorite manga. I kindof agree that they should've took the joke back to its original form... but they should've also admitted to their mistake instead of leaving it without a word.

--edit--
Just noticed the dayly calendar is on 4chan.biz, good source of small artworks, going to see if i can find a program that will automate the display.

Does anyone remember the official English dub of Azumanga Daioh?

Don't get me wrong, I still perfer scans and fansubs as an alternative. And I'm not immediately fond of putting an English/Americanized-oriented spin on things. Mostly, I just want read a manga or view and anime and understand what their saying. That said, I still like ADV's translation of Yotsuba. It's their first two volumes that introduced me and got me hooked on the series, to be honest. Some choices that they made I don't agree with--but if they left the original japanese jokes intact in without some sort of spin or thoughtful explanation (like the anime dub of Azu Daioh) I'd doubt I'd be as big a fan as I am now.

So yeah, I agree--they've made some unthoughtful changes. Maybe they simply thought that changing the joke would save them money and work rather than to index the manga and print additional pages of explanations of what specific terms and whatnot actually meant.

It's one of the worst dubs out there to my knowledge. Even Bobobo Bobobobo's dub beats it. But to be perfectly fair, no one can really hold a candle to the voice acting abilities of Yuki Matsuoka. >: 3

Bad news--I found the link my friend was talking about--and it was on Azuma's weblog. Last place I ever thought of looking:

http://azumakiyohiko.com/archives/c_15.php

So I went to wikipedia to see if anyone else saw it and the info has already been updated. It's nothing definite, but Azuma at this point doesn't want to have an animated version of Yotsuba.

Despite the success of Azumanga Daioh, no plans have yet been announced for an anime adaptation of Yotsuba&!. In an entry posted on his website on 2005-05-15, Azuma said he did not want to see the series animated.

Gah.

It's an old article and it's WAY back in his blog. Seeing as there's already action figure and music CD's now, I think or at least am hoping that he's more open to the idea now.

Dark Nation Aug 23, 2007 12:36 AM

Pretty funny, especially Yotsuba's reactions.

There is only up to 48 on Yotsuba&! | Download Yotsuba | Ñêà÷àòü Yotsuba

fireball87 Sep 19, 2007 01:51 AM

It was an obvious typo seeing as 49 hasn't been released yet (and certainly wasn't at the date of that post, i've been keeping up with my other sources, so if 49 came out, i thin i would've seen a RAW). Azumas took a month break I think, and should have a release any day now.

Dark Nation Sep 19, 2007 07:47 AM

Huh? Oh yeah, meant to type 47/48. lol, my bad.

Well since Ch.49 IS coming out soon apparently,
I guess you won't have to wait too long.

fireball87 Sep 19, 2007 06:02 PM

I can't be for certain though how long of a break it is, It wasn't mentioned in the last episode, and I can't look through azumas blogs since the archives were cleared. Most likely its just a standard break because of the finalizing of Volume 7 and the yotsuba figure. Its always been just one month before, but I have no clear evidence saying that is true. I'll just keep looking in for the next 5 days (standard release time), and if its there its there, otherwise It will probably be another month.

--edit--

Yeap Raws are out, not worth bumping though, so I'll pull this back up on translation.

fireball87 Sep 23, 2007 01:27 PM

Just for the note, new chapter is translated and at 4chan.biz Yotsuba& Opposites, I'll be editing this with my opinion after i read it.

Spoiler:
Felt really short and didn't follow any major point, good all the same. It easily fulfills its purpose of closing one book and starting another. I think i want a down futon and a pillow too, night folks

Skaijo Sep 24, 2007 04:40 PM

I loved this chapter--after waiting so long Yot, I was just about ready to accept anything. Still, Azuma didn't stoop to doing anything radical to start off his new volume and stuck with the same charm as always.

Spoiler:
There was a part of me that thought that she would break her ankle or something

Additional Spam:
Spoiler:
I also thought that Yot was coming THIS CLOSE to trying to milk a cat.

hikarub Sep 29, 2007 01:34 PM

Ha ha, that was funny, "Something good turned into something bad..."!!

:tpg:

Also, for fans of the Yotsuba action figure, Revoltech is coming out with new figures to complement Yotsuba:

Fuka (looks like no articulation though... :( ):
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/03218.jpg

And Danboro (Danboard)!!:
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/03338.jpg

Danboro has light-up eyes!! Holy cow!!

:judge:

Hantei Sep 29, 2007 04:32 PM

That's cause Fuka isn't a part of Kaiyodo's revoltech line. Haha, but the Danboro looks awesome, definitely a must buy for me! Hmm, if the price if right I might have to get me a Fuka too, even if she lacks articulation.

Oh and if I remember correctly the Yotsuba revoltech should be out in Japan right now, it was like the end of September or something. Diamond comics will be distributing the revoltech Yotsuba as well, but they won't be shipping her till December.

fireball87 Sep 29, 2007 10:34 PM

I'll stick with just yotsuba, seeing as I'm both short on funtime (this year I will have purchased arcade sticks, all 4 yotsuba mangas, a new laptop, and whatever other in town entertainment, 2 grand is enough for one year) cash and I'm not really all too interested in any of the other ones. Cool as fuuka and danbo may be.

Skaijo Nov 5, 2007 05:22 PM

Hey... when/where do guys think chapter 50 is coming? I'm suffering from withdrawl... ) :

fireball87 Nov 6, 2007 04:50 AM

I've heard no word, but seeing as its already well past the date I would expect a new one, I'd guess around the 25th of this month.

--edit-- though if it makes you feel better, the azu image boards (which is the best place i've found for yotsuba raws) had a really long and pointless post set about metal gear yotsuba.

Tir Nov 26, 2007 12:16 PM

Chapter 50 is up on 4chan.biz, finally! :D

fireball87 Nov 26, 2007 12:37 PM

Yeah, ya beat me to it ^^.

Good chapter though
Spoiler:
opposite day was driven to the point of annoying almost though that was quite worth it in the end, random rubix cube, preppy yotsuba, will the fun never end

Skaijo Nov 26, 2007 05:15 PM

Yay! I hate to say it's about time, but I'm glad I don't have to suffer through another week of Yotsuba withdrawl. I loved this episode in Yotsuba's life just as much as the last recent batch. This Volume will truely be the best yet.

Spoiler:

A culture festival, huh? Nice way to set up for the next chapter. I wonder if there will be any Azumanga Daioh references next time.

The slow tears of yotsuba's disappointment was damn hilarious

Skaijo Jan 9, 2008 04:59 PM

I'm glad to see that Yotsuba isn't as invincible or sugar high as she was in the first ten chapter. As the characters mellow out more, the subtle humor can take more of a center stage in the manga. Plus, Yotsuba is way more believable as a kid in these latest chapters than where we started off. :3

Skaijo Jan 17, 2008 08:20 AM

More Yot goodies as we wait for 52:

fireball87 Feb 28, 2008 09:51 PM

Ah, were back up, I'll get back to the usual then. Chapter 53 is out now.

Spoiler:
Well, considering what she has fer adults, maybe acting like an adult isn't the best choice. Maybe "Act like the closest thing to other kids in the area" would be better advice. This chapters made me realize that the ayase girls act more "mature" then most of mr koiwai's friends. Also yanda is more or less right on the money. His relationship with yotsuba does in many ways mirror that of many brothers/sisters.

Trigunnerz Mar 2, 2008 01:01 AM

What a charming chapter!

I hope there are more Yanda/Yotsuba chapters. I love their squabbling.

Shenlon Mar 4, 2008 05:36 PM

lol, can't wait for the next chapter....wonder how long it's gonna take?

Shenlon Sep 4, 2009 11:16 AM

The helicopter bit was the best. Glad a chapter got released this year.

Dark Nation Sep 4, 2009 12:06 PM

I haven't read the last few chapters, so nice to catch up again. Yotsuba's antics are great as always.

hikarub Oct 9, 2009 02:37 AM

Part 2 of the Balloons story is out now:

Yotsuba chapter 62

...plus more candy and heli fun!

:p

hikarub Mar 21, 2010 02:28 PM

Well, the chapters we find on 4chan are stuck at number 62, but it seems online manga sites are more up to date. Onemanga.com have upto chapter 65 so now I just read manga from there.

Chapter 64 with the pancakes was good, as was chapter 65 because of this:

hikarub Apr 28, 2010 11:23 AM

Chapter 66 is out too.

The usual antics, though nothing special this time.

hikarub Jun 26, 2010 11:59 AM

Great, looks like Yen Press (who now own the North American license for Yotsubato! after ADV gave it up) has requested OneManga to remove the manga from their site...

...so no more Yotsuba until the official releases come out in book form. At least we shouldn't have to wait too long I guess. Volume 8 (featuring the cultural festival at Fuuka's school, the typhoon, the matsuri where everyone wears happi, and other stories) was released in April, and volume 9 (which I'm guessing will introduce Duralumin and show the hot-air balloons) will be out this December.

SailorDaravon Jun 26, 2010 12:18 PM

I've been going to OneManga forever and had no idea they even had Yotsuba on there.

Kinda sucks, but we buy the new volumes as soon as they come out, so not the end of the world.

FatsDomino Jun 26, 2010 03:50 PM

Actually from what I recall it was added in mass a few months ago. However I pretty much stopped going to Onemanga after they removed half of their shit cuz their ad company didn't like some of the questionable content they had on their site. I use mangatoshokan now which is way better than Onemanga in pretty much every department. They have up to chapter 67 of Yotsubato. Yotsubato! :: Read Yotsubato! Manga Online :: MangaToshokan

SailorDaravon Jun 26, 2010 04:49 PM

I only keep up with about 5 or so series that are still all on OneManga, so I saw that they had removed a bunch of stuff but was kinda meh about it.

FatsDomino Jun 26, 2010 07:56 PM

You're free to use onemanga but it's nowhere as good as mangatoshokan. It allows you to keep a reading list so that it shows the latest chapter of whatever you want like your 5 or so series. It also has high quality scans and the ability to zoom to fit your browser. It also let's you bookmark your reading progress. So yeah just saying.

SailorDaravon Jun 26, 2010 09:27 PM

Now THAT is more interesting, I will check it out. Thanks!

hikarub Jun 27, 2010 12:09 PM

Ooh, now that sounds pretty good! Will check it out too! :D

SailorDaravon Jun 27, 2010 11:02 PM

Yeah, MangaToshokan is way better than OneManga across the board.

Only thing that might make a difference is whether or not OneManga gets releases up faster than they do or not, I guess I'll find out later this week.

hikarub Jul 16, 2010 01:18 PM

Huh. MangaToshokan was forced to remove practically 70% of their manga due to pressure from publishers and whatnot. They've only very few manga left intact. I'm kinda' miffed because even stuff that hasn't been licensed in North America have been removed: stuff like City Hunter (licensed by Gutsoon Entertainment who then went bust) and Angel Heart are gone; even Highschool of the Dead is gone. (They've still got Nyan Koi! though).

They figure that only Chinese and Korean manhwa are still available...

Apparently, OneManga pretty much still has most of their unlicensed stuff intact, and others...

FatsDomino Jul 16, 2010 02:15 PM

Yeah, I was actually gonna report this too, hikarub. Super disappointing and after I just told SD about the website too. :(

Pretty much if it's from China or Korea it's still good. Anything from Japan they just don't touch anymore. It's such a shame because I adore the way their site works. I hope if anything they lend out the code to someone who gets a server located in a place out of reach from such legal nonsense to take their mantle of hosting god damn everything again. I was having such a great time yesterday until I found out about this too. :(

hikarub Jul 22, 2010 09:29 AM

Well, I guess I shouldn't really be surprised, what with MangaToshokan getting warnings about their manga and all....

Quote:

It pains me to announce that this is the last week of manga reading on One Manga (!!). Manga publishers have recently changed their stance on manga scanlations and made it clear that they no longer approve of it. We have decided to abide by their wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site. The removal of content will happen gradually (so you can at least finish some of the outstanding reading you have), but we expect all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July '10).

So what next? We're not really sure at this point, but we have some ideas we would like to try out. Until then, the One Manga forums will remain active and we encourage all of you to continue using them. OMF has developed into a great community and it would be a shame to see that disappear.

Regardless of whether you stay with us or not, on behalf of the One Manga team, I would like to thank you all for your unwavering support over the years. Through the ups and downs you have stuck with us, and that is what kept us going.

As a certain Porky was fond of saying... That's all folks!

Time for me to go lay down and let this all sink in.

- Zabi
So that's it! Check out One Manga before the site shuts down next week and read as much manga as you possibly can before it disappears!!

But man, this sucks.... :(

Can't believe that they're dropping everything, even the unlicensed and dead licensed manga too...

FatsDomino Jul 22, 2010 09:59 AM

Well I guess it's back mangafox and once that's gone back to gotlurk (hmmm gotlurk appears to be down or gone) and mangaupdates. Publishers are retarded. This stops nothing and they aren't adapting with the Internet to combat it in an intelligent way.

hikarub Aug 9, 2010 11:11 AM

Well, back to the topic. Chapter 69 is out: Yotsuba & The Reunion.

Yotsuba and Ena visit Princess Miura in her castle. :D
http://h1.ripway.com/hikarub/o069_11bit.jpg

....and a familiar character appears, or does he?

hikarub Sep 23, 2010 01:20 PM

Huh. Is it me or has Yotsuba completely disappeared from Mangafox?

:eye:

FatsDomino May 14, 2015 06:02 AM

Bumping the shit out of this thread just because. It's amazing how much time passes between chapters now. Practically nothing has happened when you stop and think about it. Doesn't change that Yotsubato is a great manga but like they went camping and Grandma arrived is basically all that's happened. If you haven't read in a while I recommend you do so anyway. Funny looking at this thread and seeing all these old manga hosting websites. I use Batoto for the most part these days. You can find Yotsubato on it.

hikarub Jul 11, 2015 03:07 PM

Wahoo! Gosh, it's been ages since I've been on Gaming Force! How is everyone?!

Yeah, Yotsuba's still awesome, though I just buy the manga published by Yen Press now. They've been doing a stellar job on the title. Their last volume was 13 though, which ended with the camping trip.

I usually go to mangareader for my other manga reading pursuits.

chato Aug 10, 2015 06:12 AM

hikarub, your sig was always the best ;p
