Ouran High School Host Club

To be blunt, this anime is gay. REALLY gay. This anime is full of pretty boys looking gay, and often times acting gay too. Not surprising of a shoujo anime. Wait... Shoujo anime?! Surely you gest, TFL! Why would you, a guy, be watching something made for girls who love pretty boys in yaoi-esque situations?! Well, quite frankly, this anime is for anyone who loves a good comedy and enjoys laughing out loud. It's pure hilarity, to put it simply. And no, nothing is wrong with you for watching this anime. Your masculinity, providing you're a guy reading this, is not in jeopardy. :tpg:

The story begins with Fujioka Haruhi, a first year, and new, student at Oudan High School, a prestigious school for the wealthy. Bottom line, if you don't have a rich background with a lot of money to throw around, you won't get into this high school... unless you're a genius like Haruhi and got in with the help of a rare scholarship. Unfortunately for Haruhi, he's just a commoner among the thousands of rich teens at the high school. In fact, he seems to be the only one.

Haruhi finds himself looking for one of four libraries scattered about the campus; the last one was far too noisy for him. However, he quickly stumbles upon a seemingly vacant music room, only to come across... THE OURAN HOST CLUB *que sparkles and flowery background*. There he meets the club's odd collection of six members, all of which I'll introduce later, and after a bit of confused chit-chat as to why Haruhi is there, the unfortunate commoner accidentally knocks over a vase that is valued at 8 million yen (roughly 68,500 US dollars). From that point on, Haruhi is forced to become the Host Club's "Host Club Dog" and run errands for them in order to work off his debt.

So what is the "Host Club"? As the founder and president of the club so eloquently puts it, "In this private Ouran Academy, pedigree comes first, then money comes second. One thing that rich people have is time. The Ouran Host Club is a secret club, consisting of pretty boys with time to spare. The host and entertain girls with the same time commitment. It's a special extravaganza employed by the super rich folks."

The next scene we're introduced to the members of the Host Club and their odd idiosyncracies. First we meet 2nd Year Tamaki Suou, the Host Club President. Being the club president, he enjoys being called "King" among his club members. He is also the most popular among the members, as he is requested by 70% of the girls who frequent there.

Haruhi's first assignment is to bring the Host Club some coffee to drink. Being that he is a commoner and only knows so much, he ends up being instant coffee, which Tamaki is amazed by. Having never had instant coffee, Tamaki proposes that they try it and see what it tastes like (of course Haruhi must serve it). The girls are a bit scared to try the said coffee... until Tamaki proposes a way to drink it. Naturally, the girls go nuts.

Next we meet 1st Years Hitaiichin Hikaru and Kaoru, twin brothers who often talk in unison and pretend to flirt with one another in front of their guests. Again, the fangirls eat it up.

Then there is 3rd Year Morinozuka Takashi (AKA Mori), a quiet guy who neither talks much nor smiles at all, and his cousin 3rd Year Morinozuka Mitsukuni (AKA Honey), who, despite his loli looks, is actually the oldest member in the entire club. He's too adorable for his own good, and the fangirls love it.

Lastly we meet 2nd Year Ootomi Kyouya, Vice President of the Host Club. It appears that he is less of a host and more of a planner for the club, as he usually plans the events held for the many girls that come to be entertained.

After some banter, one of the twins removes Haruhi's glasses, expecting beady eyes but discovers something spectacular. Tamaki takes his look... and immediately orders the club to give Haruhi a makeover. Soon, Haruhi looks just as good as the rest of them, to which Tamaki obviously approves. Now looking like a bishishounen like the rest of the club, Haruhi's status as a member is upgraded to a full member!

Unfortunately, Haruhi doesn't seem to be very good at first as far as entertaining girls goes. However, he quickly gets the hang of it and has three girls request him for their next meeting. Tamaki then introduces them to one of his frequent quests, Anayokouji-hime, to which Haruhi simply says hello and smiles, slightly embarrassed. Of couse, Tamaki is utterly impressed by Haruhi's natural talent and shows his appreciation. Haruhi calls out to Mori for help, and Mori does indeed come to his aide, only to notice something strange about Haruhi. Unfortunately, Anayokouji doesn't seem to like the new host club member due to his bad upbringing.

Unknown to Haruhi, Ayanokouji throws his bag into the school's pool at the front of the academy. Haruhi goes searching for his things, and Tamaki later comes and helps him. Next scene, Ayanokouji requests Haruhi, only to try and start trouble and get Haruhi kicked out of the club. However, the twins dump water on the two, and Tamaki sees through Ayanokouji's plan and tells her to leave the club. With Haruhi's only uniform now soaking wet, the club provides Haruhi with some spare clothes and tells him to go change.

While Haruhi is changing, Tamaki comes to give Haruhi some towels to dry off with, only to discover something shocking. Haruhi is actually a girl! Unfortunately for Tamaki, Kyouya was the first to figure it out, while the other members figured it out along the way. The episode ends with Haruhi mentioning she'll have to use "ore" (the masculine version of referring to oneself in Japanese) from now on and gives us a cute smile. So cute, Haruhi~! <3

This anime is a complete blast and is hilarious. This is easily one of the best new shows of the season. The animation is smooth and the art is very nice, despite the characters being a bit one dimensional. There shouldn't be any reason you wouldn't watch this anime if you enjoy a good comedy. I know I'll be eagerly awaiting each hilarious episode as the weeks go by. ^_^

tl;dr opening post, methinks, but whatever~

Point being, just watch it already.

It's good. Better than it should be.

Also, it's funny. Hilarious, some would say.

I just hope no gay drama filler comes in, because I'm about to call this gold.

HazelGuy Apr 23, 2006 06:48 PM

I've been meaning to make a topic of this for a while but you did a better job of it than I could have. So far this is my favourite show this season, Haruhi is good, but Ouran is just that much better. Is it Shoujo? Sure, which would mean I wouldn't watch it, but I downloaded the first episode by accident and now I'm hooked.

I love their attitude towards everything as well. Loli? Yeah, we've got it. Twincest? No trouble. Tamaki is possibly the biggest blonde ever seen, which makes him all the funnier. And you feel sorry for Haruhi having to put up with him.

Best show of the new season.

Edit: And the part with arrows in the first and second episodes was fantastic. It took a moment for me to figure out what it ment and from there you're waiting in anticipation for whatever is going to happen. I didn't get the lightbulbs till Honey's one lit up though.

Its different, the colours they use are very vivid and the way its drawn makes them look flat at times, like a comic strip, it suits the show perfectly.

But seriously, I know the school is rich and all, but a Big Ben?

booboocat Apr 24, 2006 01:34 AM

this is one anime i'd love to see made into a drama.

i actually liked hana yori dango japanese drama. it wasn't bad at all.
can't say the same about meteor garden though.

HYD is my favourite Live Action drama so far. I've only watched a few other Live action series yet though...
I second what you said about this series being made into a drama, I'd love to see that! I think the anime is sweet, and there's not any real man-man love in it (yet) - though the guys give the guests their moneys worth... Like with the twins and all... Oh, and I haven't read the manga yet, but I sure will after seeing how good it makes as an anime.

Well, I wouldn't go and say "fresh."

Some have likened it to being Marimite, except with guys. And more girls posing as guys.

Manny Biggz Apr 24, 2006 10:28 PM

Yes HYD is a awesome live action, but the GTO live action, and I.W.G.P top it IMO.

I'm anxiously awaiting episodes 1, and 2 to finish downloading. Need some comedy in between the gaps of School Rumble episodes!

Summonmaster Apr 24, 2006 11:10 PM

Oh phew, I thought I was the only guy that would watch this. It's very funny how everything is borderline gay (with lots of flowery references and conversations within a kiss' proximity, a centimetre more and it would be officially shounen-ai ;)). I really found this funny and stumbled onto it by chance when a friend showed me the plot summary. I have to admit I was a bit slow and didn't realize the thing about Haruhi until when they explicitly pointed it out at the end, so I was a little confused after reading the summary and while was I was watching the first episode. I want more of this admittedly strange anime! ("Twincest" is my new favourite term :P)

Episode three is also out, you can get torrent links here if you're looking for them.

Episode 3 is glorious.

The episodes tend to be out of a thursday/friday night.

Tama8-chan May 24, 2006 08:52 PM

My anime club screened the first episode of this yesterday, and I was hooked instantly.
I was a bit reluctant because of the light-yaoi in it, but it's fucking hilarious.
If they were SERIOUSLY yaoi, I wouldn't watch it, but because even they know it's all just an act for the pure entertainment of their lady customers, that's totally fine by me.
I just watched the first 4 eps last night. I've got up to ep 7, so I will be watching them tonight.

Summonmaster May 24, 2006 09:10 PM

I'm very disappointed that there was no twincest scene in Ep. 7 at all :( I guess people would get tired of that...but not me ;)

Tama8-chan May 28, 2006 07:04 AM

Me neither, lol.
I like how they even explained that it's just for show, and they play it up and use it to their advantage all the time, lol.

Ep 8 had a lot less of everything, and more focused on Tamaki's infatuation with Haruhi. And JUST when you think she's almost fallen for him - the coveted 'she only reveals her fears to the person she's closest to' - it all falls to pieces....lolol.

There most likely will be a relationship forming somewhere down the line....it may not be with Tamaki.

Conan-the-3rd May 28, 2006 10:50 AM

Just watched ep 2, god the whole "lets set this scene up with arrows" thing just works.

StarCrossedSoul May 30, 2006 12:08 AM

Oh my gosh, now this is funny.
Not my usual kind of anime, but I find it quite entertaining, that I'm actually dying to see whatever's going to happen next to Haruhi.
I like how her character makes a great contrast in the series, and it kind of reminded me of the manga, Perfect Girl Evolution.

Rydia May 30, 2006 03:11 PM

I've seen six episodes, and I'm glad I finally started watching this. This is my first gender-bending anime, but it's entertaining. I thought it was clever how they used arrows during certain episodes.

Conan-the-3rd Jun 1, 2006 01:24 PM

Ep 5.

Had any other anime done it's ending, I'd fell cheated out of an episode.

Ill intent: None.

Conan-the-3rd Jun 4, 2006 06:53 AM

heheh, Episode 6, the whole time, the only thing that registered in my mind was "That's Naruto's voice..."

And of course, a trip to ANN confermed it :D

I had trouble not picturing him as Naruto as well, but that was a fantastic part at the start of the episode when he completely undoes everything Tamaki is trying to do to stop the whole thing from falling apart and insulting the customers.

7&8 are good, though they're a bit more indepth character-wise, especially the twins and their rivalry with Tamaki over Haruhi. And they know exactly how to push Tamaki's buttons, to the point of where you almost have to feel sorry for him being manipulated all over the place.

He's a precosious brat with an issue, they're practicly the same chracter anyway.

HazelGuy Jun 5, 2006 07:34 PM

The look on Tamaki's face after he stole his customers was priceless. Oh, Lunar just released episode 9. I'm trying to remember what the preview was about last week.

I think they've had an episode for each of the characters now haven't they? Kyouya, Tamaki, the Twins, Mori and Honey have all had had one.

I'm halfway through watching the new one.
Spoiler:
The ballerina that saved Haruhi is so the opposite version of her, a guy pretending to be a girl. And for some reason Tamaki looks like they dragged him in from another show with that armor on.

Edit the 2nd: Okay, so maybe I was wrong about that, but this one has some fantastic parts in it. I'll post some screenshots too, but there's nothing really spoilerish in them, but I'll tag them just in case.

And it turns out Tamaki is half French. That explains a lot.

Oh, and the next episode Haruhi goes home and Tamaki leads the rest of the hosts to visit. Out of the kindness of his heart. Sure

The Host Club's theme for this week:

Tamaki The Brave? Idiot?

Spoiler:

Who knew the twins had such good taste?

Or maybe not

Next Episode (Haruhi's House)

Tamaki busted yet again

Conan-the-3rd Jun 7, 2006 02:26 AM

Anyone notice Bones' Insigna on Huraihi's Sold Mechanical Pencil and how almost all of the Ouran HS students weren't impressed with Zuku Club's prefromance?

Not really, I was too busy waiting to see what Haruhi was going to do to Tamaki after she found out to notice.

Mojougwe Jun 7, 2006 12:32 PM

My brother downloaded some of this. At first he tried to persuade me it's a comedy. And it was, in some sense. But I was refusing to watch because it was so girly styled.

And here I am..... in my own pathetic way watching it now.

Spoiler:
I thought Haruhi was a guy first time I took a glimpse at this anime, when my brother was watching it.

My girlfriend is completely hooked on it. A lot of the humour is just slap stick but it only gets better and better.

paranoidsponge Jun 9, 2006 07:33 PM

Watching this is almost a guilty pleasure.

The Host Club disguising themselves as women was just too hilarious.

Aaaand the new episode is out! Time to watch!

Summonmaster Jun 9, 2006 11:15 PM

I loved the yuri closeness to match Hikaru and Kaoru's yaoi tendencies, when Benio got a little to close to Haruhi's face.

Also, Honey screaming: "I'm a princess!" cracked me up.

What silliness! They topped themselves again with the latest ep.

Double Post:
Actually Episode 10 is hilarious as well. The biggest catch of the ep:
Spoiler:
Haruhi's dad is a tranny
got me howling.

joeymui Jun 14, 2006 12:15 AM

Yeay!!! This is also one of my most favourites. So hilarious, I really like the way they make some serious life situation funny, and I like the art too. I started reading the manga few years back and was really happy when they decided to make it into animation this year. The manga is still on going (think up to chapter 37 now and book 8), so far the animation is still very true to the original manga in both the art and storyline (almost identical in some instances). I hope they will keep it this way.

Ouran High School Host Club is definitely not gay, and there will not be any gay elements as the story go on either, a relief for those of you who do not like yaoi stuff. And no it's not only for us girls, I know many guys are also hooked on this animation too.

5 stars for Ouran High School!!

Luckee Cookie Jun 14, 2006 12:22 AM

ah <3 to this series!

I share great times while watching this with my bf. and then he gives me a werid look when I squeal at the twin-incestness :x

Tama8-chan Jun 14, 2006 08:03 AM

I hate waiting for this every week.

It's always too long to wait, and the episodes always seem too short.

kouri Jun 14, 2006 08:04 AM

it's a really fun series to watch.
and it is pretty damn funny at times :p
it's following the manga atm, almost 100%
how many eps is it in total? :o

Arh.. and I really like the ending theme Shissou~

Really? Glad to hear that cause initially I heard there was gonna be 13 episodes only.

Episode 9 nearly had me falling off the chair, especially when they started acting like the Lobelia girls.

yeah I hope that too, I really enjoy episode 10 damn I never thing that Haru chan father could be like that, lol

Dee Jun 25, 2006 11:48 PM

Anyone rec the manga, because so far I only found 15 chapters translated. I hear both manga and anime have their pros/cons (like many other series). But it seems like a twist on the idea of the harem genre. ;)

Conan-the-3rd Jun 27, 2006 04:43 AM

Seriouly, you had Eureka Seven refrences, Eva refrences and even Honey pissed off.

For the win.

tsuchiiru Jun 28, 2006 09:34 AM

definitely one of the anime series that i've seen that has adapted the manga quite well. ^___^ both are must-see/must-read.

the characters are lovable, too.

Lee-chan Jun 28, 2006 03:45 PM

Heh, Ouran has been the only anime I've been this hooked to in years. The last episode (twelve) was gold, but I have to say my fave so far has been episode four.

My only vice is the fact that the overall plot's been crawling at the speed of a sloth, but it's something I always happen to forget that when I'm actually watching the show - I'm too busy cracking up.

Sin Ansem Jun 29, 2006 05:04 PM

Renge is the best character in the entire anime. She's made of so much awesome. :tpg:

Also I was amused by the gay but had Haruhi remained a guy I would've quit after the first episode. Thank Chaos I didn't.

It's like Keroro Gunsou, you don't care cause each episode is so fucking good.

Tama8-chan Jun 29, 2006 05:56 PM

I think right now it's just where the anime explores the facets of each of the characters, and the club just going about their business.
Like Haruhi's home life, dark no-sunlight dude's relationship with his sister, and in ep 12, Honey-kun's love of sweets.

You just know there's going to be a point when a massive bombshell is dropped and then the entire school finds out Haruhi is in fact a girl.
(Though I don't think it would be as severe as I My Me Strawberry Eggs)

And when the girls realise that their designated host is a girl, they'll all turn lesbian for her. LOL!

Mind you, I havent read the manga, lol.

Summonmaster Jun 29, 2006 08:15 PM

Since those silly schoolgirls fall for fake twincest and attempted lolicon, I wouldn't doubt if theyd' turn les for Haruhi :)

I would like to see more exploration of Kyouya-sempai. So far he's the hidden mastermind of everything, but overall pretty bland being just "the smart one".

I get the feeling that Haruhi was wrong when she said that he wouldn't do anything to her because there wasn't anything in it for him. More than anything I think that it just threw him off, he wasn't expecting her to say something like that and so he left.

But yeah, I'd like to something about Kyouya and Mori, because everytime anything starts to revolve around Mori Honey jumps in and derails the episode.

And we need more pointing arrows and games between the twins and Tamaki!

I take it you haven't read the manga, because somewhere around Vol 6/7 they explain a tad bit more about Tamaki and Kyouya. I'd also like something more on Mori, he barely speaks up most of the time.

Summonmaster Jun 30, 2006 11:44 AM

Manga's lying somewhere on my computer unread. That's good then, since it's a reason for me to start reading it. Kyouya + Tamaki may prove to be interesting.
I too agree that Honey steals the spotlight from Mori. Their "special" relationship is funny, but I can't picture Mori without Honey yet.

Needs more Zuka Club + tranny action.

HazelGuy Jun 30, 2006 11:52 AM

This screen shot shows both why Ouran is a fantastic show and why I almost spat soup over my keyboard.

Easily the best part of each episode is the theme though, I couldn't stop laughing at Tamaki in his suit of armor, especially when he got shot down by the Opera club. I'm just waiting for some other rival school's Host Club to barge in and some sort of Host-Off hijinks to ensue.

Oh, and Tamaki inevitably getting busted in a situation where it looks as though he's taking advantage of her, I'm also glad to see that I wasn't the only one who though that the crossdressing thing being hereditary in Haruhi's family hilarious.

I would like to see some more episodes revolving around Haruhi without being interrupted.

lemonmanko Jul 2, 2006 11:21 PM

my friend recently got me hooked on this series
its really good i love the play of shounen Ai (gay twin brothers weeee ><;;) in it
i downloaded all 13 episodes (thinking it was a short series) and its still has episodes

thank god this season of anime been either too serious or too fruity

HazelGuy Jul 4, 2006 06:32 AM

New episode! Haruhi in Wonderland and it is win. The arrows are back too.

Screen shots ahoy!

And new Ouran means a new avatar!

I liked the ep, it was a lot deeper than it first seemed to be, had bananas, arrows, Nekozawa and Renge. I think the only downside was Haruhi with the long hair.

Lee-chan Jul 4, 2006 01:21 PM

RE: Episode Thirteen

Spoiler:
Call me a downer but I didn't laugh once this episode, and thought that it was actually kind of boring. Maybe it's the tone the anime's set so far, and maybe it was my expectations for this episode... I dunno.

There were a few good points. Of course, seeing the Club in a new set of costumes was good... We did get some valuable Haruhi insights at the end.

I hope future episodes are able to mesh the funnier and more serious moments better than this.

According to Wikipedia, it's Chieco Kawabe's Little Wing from her brilliance album. Maybe that helps something. Weird that it's not included in the soundtracks.

joeymui Sep 25, 2006 06:24 AM

tsuchiiru-kun ^^. chigau, the song tamaki played in episode 15 was a much faster pace one which sounds more like the 1st movement of some sonata and the one in ep 24 sounds like a nocturne or some serenade. Don't ask me for the title tho as I can't recall them. They are both definitely not in the OST 1, perhaps in OST 2, but I haven't checked.

JammerLea Sep 25, 2006 01:07 PM

Yay! Host Club! Someone tried getting me interested in the series by selling it as "yaoi" when explaining it to me. I was like, "uh, ok?" But of course after seeing it and finding out it was more just funny, I loved it. XD Sadly I've only seen up to episode... 18, I believe. Argh.

Tamaki's definitely a favorite character of mine. The twins are amusing. I like Kyouya too, but I haven't quite been able to put my finger on why.

I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that Maaya Sakamoto was voicing Haruhi. But... I'm sad she hasn't done any songs for the series. I was hoping I'd find one, given their are some image songs about.

Greykin Sep 25, 2006 04:14 PM

Episode 25:
Spoiler:
Well, that was rather interesting, a dramatic episode indeed. Oh, and like, Haruhi, she was actually jealous? Why would she be jealous exactly? Like, the entire series she didn't seem to over enjoy Tamaki's presence and stuff

Anywho, I can't wait to see the final episode, it seems like it'll conclude well. I'm having that crappy feeling I have though, reaching the end of a wonderful series, sorta like watching Love Hina and Azumanga end, so depressing ;_; !

ZeroDivide Sep 30, 2006 01:31 AM

sadly the series is now over :( but lets hope there is a season 2 for it.. happened to be one of my favorite animes for sure.

Bishounen Bitch Oct 1, 2006 09:07 PM

I'm crushed that it's over. Granted, I've still got several other series to keep up with but when I think about it they were more like fillers to kill time between Ouran episodes.

It was a fantastic, edge of your seat finale, though. It was just over too soon... *devastated*

Bradylama Oct 1, 2006 09:10 PM

I'm kind of dissapointed that the whole club didn't end, or even that it closed with it moving on to a new stage of Host Club with Honey and Mori graduated and whoever filling in their spots. If nothing's changed by the end of the show it's kind of pointless.

Still, it was a good finale.

Rydia Oct 1, 2006 09:57 PM

I just saw the final episode today, and I'm actually disappointed that the series is over. I started it a few weeks after the premiere of the first episode when a friend mentioned how entertaining it was. I didn't expect to see some serious moments during the anime though, but I enjoyed how each character had their own episode.

Sarag Oct 1, 2006 10:08 PM

Aww, Ouran. <3

I heard the manga's still ongoing, and new characters are introduced, probably because of Honey and Mori graduating. I hope they do another series! =o

well since the manga is ongoing there should be a season 2 but that will be after death note  and death note will most likely be a long show like bleach or naruto..(maybe not naruto since naruto is going to like episode 300 or so)

i can wait as long as 2-3 years for this series though.. i love it :D

Bradylama Oct 2, 2006 02:20 AM

Another thing the finale was sorely missing was a reaction from Grandma. I hated that bitch, and it would've been great to see her face get swallowed into her cunt when she got the metaphorical finger.

So much lack of closure.

And what about the twins? You've still got an awful sort of love triangle going on. This series badly needs a follow-up.

Yeah, I'm sort of disappointed. I just finished watching Ouran, Air Gear, Zero and Honey & Clover, all series that I really enjoyed, so now I need to fish aroud for some of the new stuff on the way out.

When the manga gets further ahead I'd like to see a 2nd season of Ouran though.

I hate it when a very good season finishes.

Shoot! How did I miss the final episode release? Well, I'll just have to wait until this evening to watch it. *sighs* There goes another series.

If you're looking for something new I can recommend Bokura ga Ita. It's high school romance and it's painfully realistic. The character design takes some getting used to but the storyline is solid.

I'll give it a shot, though hopefully it doesn't take itself too seriously. The best part of H&C was that whenever it started being serious Morita started being an idiot.

The last episode of Ouran though was goddamn classy. It had a bit of everything and the part about
Spoiler:
Kyouya buying out his father's company after being such a dick to him
was awesome.

I'm sorely tempted to start reading the manga. How far has it been released translated so far and is it a good enough job that its worth getting, or should I go for scanlations?

Summonmaster Oct 2, 2006 07:21 PM

The word that does come to mine when realizing that OHHC has come to a close is tragedy. I was very surprised at how serious and effective they managed to make the last two episodes, especially with all the fruity costume bits and Haruhi's dad present. A couple of things confused me at the end, even with the scenes in the credits and explaining most of it:

Spoiler:

1) So Kyouya himself was theoretically richer than the Tonerre company could afford?
2) All this talk about Honey and Mori's graduation I take it happened in the manga?

I also loved the symbolism thrown in with Eclair at the end:
Spoiler:
She "sees" clearly now, dropping the opera binoculars, after realizing what kind of person Tamaki truly is.

Very touching :)

1)
Spoiler:
I'm not sure if he was richer, I'm guessing he heard rumours about the company being bought out and took steps to buy it before they had a chance. Its a very Kyouya-ish thing to do and I find it hilarious that he didn't care if he was going to succeed his father running it but would have been able to just buy it if he wanted to.

2)
Spoiler:
Honey and Mori mention at one point in the series (After episode 20 I think) that they are going to be dissappointed when they graduate and have to leave the other members of the host club. It may have been at greater length in the manga though, since I haven't read it.

joeymui Oct 4, 2006 02:08 AM

It's always sad to see a good animation end before the comics, when they were doing so well and the story was in line with the manga then all of the sudden just arrange for some sort of finale for the animation when in fact the story goes on much further in the comics. It just leaves you hanging there begging for more.

Well, next one I am following will be La Corda d'oro - Primo passo. I absolutely LOVE this manga. It's still an on going series but I hope the animation will follow the manga story line and don't just end half way like Ouran High School.

Box Lunch Oct 4, 2006 03:29 PM

I started/finished the anime over the weekend and was wondering if anyone knew links to the manga..i got addicted ><

Mojougwe Oct 6, 2006 08:14 AM

Finally finished watching the remaining episodes:

Spoiler:
There needs to be more Haruhi doing "I'm a girl because I am" stuff. Plus that last costume in the final episode is kinda cute. The medival looking one.

spikeh Oct 7, 2006 05:49 PM

Regarding a possible sequel:
Spoiler:
We could get a sequel, where more of the manga is animated, but Mori and Hunny would both have graduated by then so new characters will need to be introduced. In fact, I've read two scanlated chapters from volume 10 by OMGTSRS and I can confirm that there are indeed new characters, probably to replace Mori and Hunny.

Regarding the manga:
Spoiler:
The latest scanlated chapters are up to volume 7, and have not caught up with the anime yet. The latest chapter to be scanlated was when Kyouya finds himself in a supermarket; so we don't yet know how far the manga goes.

You can find all the scanlated manga, up to volume 7, from gotlurk.

Tama8-chan Oct 7, 2006 08:54 PM

Considering Haruhi was a girl in disguise, I was actually expecting the anime to follow on with a whole 'everyone discovers she is a girl' arc like other cross-dressing anime eg I My Me Strawberry Eggs.

It wouldn't have been a nice thing, but it would given the anime the serious and dramatic tone for the 'complication' of the story.

The ending worked quite well, I must say, but I really hate it when really awesome animes just kinda whip up something in the last few episodes that just HIT you outta NOWHERE!.
I guess the tone that the anime had built up over the months didn't really allow for that sorta overly long dramatic angst - more just on an episodic, character by character basis, which they did.

I REALLY want a Season 2 ;____;

Summonmaster Oct 8, 2006 02:48 PM

I finally got both halfs of the OST from Nipponsei, and again my favourite song appears to be unreleased. I listened to all the tracks and did not find anything remotely close to that song played on acoustic for touching moments, right before Shissou plays. You can hear especially in the very last episode, and sometimes throughout the series when the characters realize something right at the end of the episode.

Tama8-chan Oct 8, 2006 06:46 PM

Yeah I've been wondering about that very short guitar riff myself! XD
What exactly is it from, if not from the ED itself?

Mojougwe Oct 8, 2006 08:44 PM

Edit: Nevermind, mis read stuff.

Dekoa Oct 8, 2006 09:28 PM

I've only seen up to episode 5 with our anime club. It's a good anime and is one of the funniest I've ever seen (Especially the twins, they are crazy).

JammerLea Oct 8, 2006 11:19 PM

Recently got the two OSTs myself... I'm still annoyed that Haruhi doesn't have an image song. WTF. I suppose I'm mostly annoyed because uh, it's Maaya Sakamoto, and I like Maaya Sakamoto's music...

Love the Twins song though.

=+Yuni+= Nov 3, 2006 05:16 PM

I was pretty annoyed that Haruhi didn't have an image song either. Maaya Sakamoto has an AMAZING voice. In the end I figured they just would rather Haruhi not have a song because the character can't really sing and it wouldn't make much sense.

All the character songs are great, but Mata Ashita is my favorite.

fuyusarah Nov 30, 2006 03:55 PM

Hey, guys, I'm a new member. Hehe. Stumbled into this thread while looking for volume 8-9 mangascans. Does anybody know where I can get them? I only have until Vol 7.

Anyway... About Maaya-san not doing a Haruhi image song: It'd be fun, though, if Haruhi DID have an image song, but a tone deaf one, like what Takayama Minami did for Edogawa Conan. XD I'd like to get my hands on that song Haruhi lip-synced in Episode 19. It isn't on the OST...

About the short guitar riff everyone's asking about: Sadly, it seems like no one in fandom knows what this guitar riff is. But it does sound a lot like another version of the guitar solo in Shissou, doesn't it? (Sort of, anyway) Maybe there's going to be a third album or something? Hehe.

packrat Nov 30, 2006 06:02 PM

According to ANN, there doesn't appear to be a 9th volume. And it doesn't look like the 8th will be released until the end of January, next year.
Sorry. =(

mindOverMatter Dec 2, 2006 10:26 PM

Just finished watching the Anime. The last episode was very touching, but there are a few things that I would like explained...if anyone has an explination..

how come Haruhi can go from Tom Boy to weak feminine just when she changes her clothes?
How come those rich Boys fall for her so easily?
and how come both fathers wanted Haruhi to marry into their family? They have noting to gain with her...not fame, not riches...and we know that is their main concern anyway..

Getting into character? Mostly because she has to?

Its a (reverse)harem shoujo anime. That is the very nature of the show. No explanation is necessary, as it is just a given aspect of the genre.

Most likely because she appears to be a very mentally strong and perceptive woman, very mature, competent, and very supportive. This makes her almost ideal marriage material, from a matrimonially practical standpoint.

mindOverMatter Dec 3, 2006 01:29 AM

strong, unarguable answers. They'll satisfy me for now. Thank you

heero_yud Jan 11, 2007 08:23 PM

I have just finished watching the episode 6 of the anime and the volume 3 of the manga but I really like it. I hope there will be second season soon.

nazpyro Mar 8, 2007 02:30 AM

Just watched the last episode, thus completing my least manly week in the last 3 years. But it was totally awesome, and I enjoyed it. Those guys were hot, especially Tamaki.

Also, Honey becoming my next av/sig soon when I get the chance. <3

Spidey Mar 8, 2007 02:44 AM

I will go ahead and download this. The funniest anime are the ones that make americans blush and get shifty-eyed.

Its excellent. I haven't read the manga but I've heard the anime did it justice, which is a fairly rare thing lately.

Besides, Tamaki is awesome.

yuna00 Mar 11, 2007 06:04 PM

i LOVE this anime! i have never laughed so hard watching an anime in my life! XD

when i showed our Japanese home-stay student the anime, he said these host club things exist in some schools! crazy! lol :p

Xellos Apr 9, 2007 09:37 PM

Have you guys heard those podcasts that come with the soundtracks?

I listened to them for a bit and sound really funny, it's hosted by Sakamoto Maaya (Haruhi) and guests Miyano Mamoru (Tamaki) and Matsukaze Masaya (Kyoya) from what I could tell, but I obviously have no idea what they're talking about. I really wish someone had a translation of it somewhere.

Sacred X Apr 9, 2007 11:07 PM

I just finished watching the whole anime. I downloaded episodes 1-16 in a pack by Lunar. I must say it was a very good anime, I enjoyed most of the episodes and it did make me laugh. It also did have its moments. I didn't really enjoy the last two episodes, though. After seeing those two episodes, I had come to the conclusion that the ending was not based on the manga and the manga was possibly still on-going. I looked it up later and found my speculation to be true. I suppose the ending the Anime had was too quick and sudden. The very end wasn't exactly as I had expected, but they still ended it in a way that would allow them to do a second season, even though that most likely won't happen.

Overall, it was a good anime. It's also not bad to rewatch.

Though I do have a question. I assume that most of the episodes from 1-24 are pretty much based on manga chapters. Is that true, and they probably made up the last two episodes not related to the manga?

Outlaw Apr 10, 2007 03:24 PM

According to Richer or poorer , they use SOME elements (Some of the plot elements and costumes, small stuff like that) from the manga for the last two episodes. Namely stuff from the the school festival arc. But the storylines themselves in those episodes are all anime. So they're not completely related, no.

I'll also note, borderline softcorn porn for girls.
The Hitaiichi brothers borders on yayoi almost... probably something I would consider borderline PG13. :p

eriol33 Oct 23, 2010 08:31 PM

bumping the thread if someone still reading this series. the manga just recently over and it's really cliche.
