Discontinued food products

Don't you hate it when a product you like is discontinued and taken off the shelves? Well, here's the place to talk about it! Discuss recent products that were taken off the shelf, or just discuss your old favorites that you want back.

One product that I want back is Pizza Hut flavored Doritos. I still say those were my favorite chips of all time, and I don't see why they were ever discontinued (I would guess maybe they didn't sell so well, but I don't see how they wouldn't as they were freaking great). They were released alongside some Taco Bell flavored chips (which weren't all that great) sometime in the mid to late nineties, and I think they only lasted for maybe a year or so. Even so, I still remember them, and I wish they would bring them back.

As for a more recent product, I wonder what happened with that S'mores candy bar that Hersheys had. It had been out for a good while (over a year at least), but then all of a sudden I saw it at the store, and it was marked discontinued. I took advantage of the fact that they were selling them at 10 for a $1, but other than that I didn't care for it too much.

Heh, I was at school around 1 AM last night and hit up the vending machines for a snack. I actually wanted one of those bars but couldn't find it in any of the machines in the building. Wound up going with Peanut M&Ms instead. :(

knkwzrd Apr 20, 2006 10:55 AM

The only cereal I've ever eaten with any regularity was Rice Crispies Squares cereal. It was basicallt just rice crispies stuck into clumps with dried up marshmellow, but damn was that good.

I want to know who decided to cancel the Marie Calendar Country Fried Chicken meal.

I will find them and I will kill them.

Those are the best frozen dinners ever. I'm surprised they canceled that one too as it was my favorate.

Anyway, I miss Crystal Pepsi. Sure its more a novelty, but I WANT MORE.

andkeener Apr 20, 2006 11:27 AM

Said this in the last discontinued food thread, and I stand by my statement, the most missed product:

I wouldn't do this though....

One time I was sitting outside eating one of those Marie Calender Fried Chicken dinners and a bear with a gun came into my yard and I totally befouled his life as a bear because I ruined his shit so hard, it is funny.

As for Surge - I recommend getting that Sobe Full Throttle energy drink in it's stead. You drop a shooter or two of gin in that and you're golden.

andkeener Apr 20, 2006 11:51 AM

They sell Vault now, which it supose to be like the predecessor of Surge, but it not quite the same :(

I've had one of those, recently in fact. They've been selling them in fundraising kits at school. *Shrug*

Starburst use to have a twizzlers-like candy. I think it was Starbursts Fruit Twists or something. I loved them, but they discontinued them a while back (that or they just don't sell 'em around here anymore).

Fjordor Apr 20, 2006 12:12 PM

I haven't seen Caramello around in ages.
I really loved that stuff, and demanded my dad buy it for me when he went grocery shopping when I was young.

Not sure if they sell these anymore either, but the Starburst jellybeans were fantastic. Much better than generic ones, no licorice, and no wackass flavors like Jelly-Belly tends to have.

I'm still missing the peanut butter filled cookies of Planter's Peanuts. It came in a bag (much like the one dog treats do) and were in 3D shapes of peanuts but inside the cookie shell, was filled with peanut butter, creamy or crunchy.

I actually e-mailed Planters a couple years ago to ask what happened to them but I never got a response :(

Kellogg's Toaster Muffins. Blueberry, to be exact.

They were shaped like toast, but had the taste and texture of a muffin. I used to eat them every single day for a couple of years, and then they were discontinued. I even wrote the company, but they just sent me back some canned letter.

Vanilla Coke is still around. I got some the other week.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but I can't find these ANYWHERE in Southern LA at any store.

Not in New York. All the stores only have this Black Cherry Vanilla Coke shit and say the normal one was discontinued.

Same here in Austin, TX. At least, around campus. And the Black Cherry Vanilla is just overdoing it on the flavorings....I prefer my plain diet Vanilla coke ;_;.

And Vanilla Pepsi just sucks (as does Pepsi in general).

Maybe we can have a GFF group project to spread the joy of Lucky Charms throughout the world.
People who do not have access to Lucky Charms sign up, and we have Americans sign up to be their counterparts. Perhaps even extend it to trading regionally unique foods.

Let's call it:
Operation General Mills. :p

Ascendancy Apr 21, 2006 01:19 PM

The only problem with that is finding a UK food that isn't available in the USA >_>

I don't think good ol' British Beef would keep in a trans-atlantic postal run.

DarkLink2135 Apr 21, 2006 02:18 PM

I really miss Surge. I remember having it at a Fazolis once, and then I think a Dairy Queen and that was it. But it was the best pop I'd ever had in my life. I was shocked when I found out it was canceled. I wonder why they don't realize there is a very high demand for it.

MMMMM PB Crisps were awesome doubly so the ones with some chocolate inside as well. The used to have these odd ice cream cake with slivers of chocolate running through them called Vianetta's I believe that I miss terribly. Those and Frutopia fruit drinks I still get a craving for passion fruit flavoured one of those fairly regularly.

You'd be surprised how much candy differs from country to country. I know Bisha and I were talking about different kinds we liked a while back and I hadn't even heard of a bunch she mentioned.

Rydia Apr 21, 2006 04:25 PM

I'm not sure if they're still around, but I never see Dulce de Leche M&Ms anymore.

http://pages.prodigy.net/jbmason/0/dulce.jpg

Another one that's been taken off the market is a product by Planters, I believe. I can't recall the exact product name as it's been well over 10 years now, but they were cookies shaped like peanuts with chocolate filling.

Rockgamer Apr 23, 2006 01:46 PM

I never see those Dulce de Leche M&Ms around any more either. I don't think they sold too well (rightfully so, as they were terrible in my opinion), even here in San Antonio, whuch has a big market for Mexican food products.

It seems that lately though, all I've been mainly seeing is just the plain ones and the peanut ones. I never see the single packages of the peanut butter ones anymore (I only see the larger ones now), and I don't think I've seen Almond or Crispy at all lately.

Fatt Apr 23, 2006 01:59 PM

I know this sounds goofy, but I want a box of Nintendo cereal, just for nostalgia sake. I loved it... like... 20 years ago... I wonder if I still would enjoy it. Boo Berry was nice too, but I know I can still find Boo Berry in a local bodega if I really wanted it.

I remember Kick soda. The biggest competitor of Jolt until the whole boom of energy drinks. Never a big fan of Orbit though. Tasted... Too wierd...

I wonder if I can still find almond peanut butter cups. And bottlecaps.

Edit: I know it isn't food, but I really miss Lucky Strike unfiltered cigarettes. I quit smoking, but I still crave them sooo baaad.

deadally Apr 23, 2006 02:06 PM

The turtles creme pies...I used to love those things

When these Herhsey's cookies are discontinued, I'll be sad. They're good

I want my simpsons cereal back!

bisha Apr 23, 2006 03:56 PM

Maybe it was just in my area but they suddenly took Oreos off the shelves of places like tescos, and now I have to go to the shop down the road that sells polish imports only.

I'm not sure if they're still on sale, but I haven't had a Lionbar in donkeys' years. Also, massive hate goes towards whoever the hell decided to take white chocolate milkyways away.

I think we should definitely do a trans-atlantic candy and snack swap. I'll send someone pot noodles for something!

Fatt Apr 23, 2006 04:01 PM

I'd love somebody to take my potted meat away. I got it as a gag gift, but I swear whatever is inside hungers for blood. I am down to participate in an international food swap meet via mail.

Arienas Apr 24, 2006 12:40 AM

About 15 years ago, Koala cookies used to be sold here. I guess the demographic of a small Arkansas town didn't help sales, so they disappeared. We just got an Asian market, but the only good snacks they sell are Hello Panda, Pocky, and Shrimp Chips.

I noticed Animenation had koala cookies a while ago, but they're gone now too.

Skexis Apr 24, 2006 01:07 AM

Oreo bigstuf cookies. Like oreos, but bigger! I remember them because at the time (80's) they were bigger than my fucking hand.

I also miss some of the novelty Twix they sold in the early 90s. Cookies and cream Twix? Double fudge Twix? Yes, I believe I will have some of that deliciousness.

WolfDemon Apr 25, 2006 12:19 AM

As some have mentioned earlier, I miss Surge so much. It was all I drank until they took it away during my freshman year in high school.

Vault is an impostor.

Amanda Apr 25, 2006 12:57 AM

Guacamole flavoured Doritos. They're gone, and now there's not a single good flavour to be found.

*mourn*

pisscart deluxe Apr 25, 2006 06:31 PM

Keebler Pizzeria chips. They tasted nothing like pizza, but were so delicious. They've been gone for like 10 years and I still miss them.

Canned macaroni and cheese. It sounds absolutely disgusting. And I'm sure that most people would think it is. But they would be wrong, because it is love and happiness in a can.

bahamuty Apr 25, 2006 07:45 PM

Tribal Tonics they were fruit drinks that sold mainly in health food stores they were so delicious. The kiwi one was the best. I really miss them.

What, is there just no market for pizza flavored chips (Those Pringles don't count, because they suck)?

Arienas Apr 25, 2006 10:36 PM

Ever tried the pizza flavored Combos?

Rockgamer Apr 25, 2006 10:40 PM

I've tried them, but they've never really been my thing. I just don't like them at all, regardless of the flavor. And for the record, I didn't mention them because I don't really consider them to be chips.

Arienas Apr 25, 2006 11:04 PM

Ah, I missed the chip part.

TGI Fridays puts out pizza flavored potato-skin chips, or at least they did for a while. I can't say I like them :/

RacinReaver Apr 25, 2006 11:56 PM

They're still sold in the vending machines at my school. I've never bought them since for the same price I can get one of those Bear Claws with 500 calories that keeps me full for a few hours (and kills me oh so slowly).

I forgot what they were called but they were these skinny Turkey franks with cheese (more like cheese wiz) filling. I used to like them when I was little....then one day....they just dissapeared like they were nothing. Maybe like 2 or 3 years after their launch.

I also liked it when Keebler Munchums had the southwest flavor. Those were good....how I miss them!

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 26, 2006 11:20 AM

CORRECTION

Marie Calendar still makes the Fried Chicken dinners! I found some this week at Stop & Shop - half price, none-the-less! The entire row was all but gone, so I took the last of three.

I hope this means that they're still being made and that these aren't just old ones from a warehouse.

DarkMageOzzie Apr 26, 2006 01:09 PM

Dark Chocolate M&Ms, I know these were really just a limited time only thing but they're freaking stupid for not keeping them around. My store sold out of these in the first 2 days they were out and they never sent us anymore. If that doesn't tell you how good they sold, it usually takes us about a month to sell all of a candy before we need to restock it.

I miss Surge too, but I honestly can't really remember what it tastes like exactly to know if Vault tastes different. All I know is I like Vault so hurray for me having a high caffeine pop to drink(Mountain Dew sucks). Oh and for those asking why Surge is gone, I'm not sure if it's true but I've heard people saying it was canceled because the Slurm episode of Futurama was supposed to be making fun of it.

Like what a couple other people said I miss Planters PB Crisp cookies, both kinds.

I miss Keebler's magic middles. Those were awesome for some reason even though they were just a chocolate chip cookie with a big blob of chocolate in the middle, they tasted really good for some reason. I haven't bought a Keebler product since those were discontinued.

I don't know if Edge Cola was discontinued or we just don't get it around here anymore but I was majorly ticked when I could no longer find it. I need Caffeine at times and I hate coffee. Surge had already been discontinued when this got canned as well so I've had to rely on weaker pop until recently when Vault came out.

Damn, you're not kidding. They are the only reason I'd ever eat M&Ms. The Star Wars Darkside theme was cool as hell too.

It's not discontinued yet, but Mello Yello is in iminent danger of kicking the bucket. The parent company Coco-Cola is experimenting with this crap called "Vault" which is basically this energy drink-soda hybrid. Not only does it taste like crap, but it doesn't give me that stay-up-all-night kick that Mello Yello gives me (for those all-nighters in the library writing papers). Vault it being tested in limited markets; if it does well Mello Yello is bye bye. :aargh:

It's not? Man, I haven't seen that stuff in years, so I had just assumed it was discontinued ages ago. I mean, there's a Coca-Cola bottling plant in my town, so I just assumed (which I'm usually right about most of the time) that if no stores in town are selling it anymore, they stopped making it.

I bet that's because Coke is more comfortable introducing new products in its home markets first. In my town, Vault has almost completely replaced Mello Yello in vending machines, but Mello Yello is still available in some fountain drinks. They've been hyping it to death too... like giving away 1-foot tall aluminum bottles of the stuff at the campus dining hall.

Rockgamer Apr 30, 2006 12:16 PM

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I've still yet to try Vault though, despite the blitzkrieg of advertising I've seen for it. It's inevitable that I will one day, though.

Here's a shot in the dark, but I honestly miss Pepsi Blue. I must have been one of only 5 people in the world that liked it, almost everyone I talked to didn't like it, but I thought it was damn good, maybe it was the whole blue raspberry flavor or what, but I want it back.

I LOVED orange sherbert icecream in the pail!!! Me and my grandpa used to get it all the time along with the red/white/blue colored icecream in the pail too!! MEMORIES!! I haven't seen it or had any in years...!!

Fjordor May 9, 2006 12:55 PM

Oh, just an update on the Caramello thing that I mentioned earlier:
I was browsing through Meijer and walked into the candy section, and it seems Cadbury decided to buy the rights to the name Caramello, and now they are putting that stuff out alongside their usual chocolate bars. I have to say, it is definitely an improvement over what was previously being put out.

Cadbury chocolate + Cadbury caramel = win

I haven't seen it either, though, and I live near the midwest. Are you sure you're not confusing it with that new Rice Krispies cereal? I think it's Berry Rice Krispies or something like that, and it comes in the same color box as the Rice Krispies Treats cereal came in. That, the original kind, and the cocoa kind are the only Rice Krispies cereals I have seen on the shelves in the last few months.

Flyzelle May 9, 2006 09:21 PM

No i'm 120% sure that it's the original rice krispy treats..that's what the box said, but it's a purple box now, not teal blue like it used to be...i brought a couple of boxes...

DJ Gear May 10, 2006 12:19 PM

Discontinued food products is one of my biggest pet peeves:

1. Stouffer's Rotini Carbonara. Best noodle dinner ever. Gone.
2. Danone Mousse Cappucino flavour. Where have you gone!?
3. Regular Diet Mountain Dew (not the caffeinated American stuff labelled "Energy" that they're trying to introduce as the mainstream mountain dew, mind you.)

Rockgamer May 10, 2006 01:59 PM

I know for sure that they still make and sell that. I just saw it yesterday, in fact. And it wasn't any kind of energy drink or anything, just regular diet Mountain Dew. Maybe they just discontinued it in Canada?

DJ Gear May 10, 2006 06:30 PM

Well, what I meant was, that they're trying to subtly make Mountain Dew caffeinated (since no clear beverage has caffeine in Canada...I believe it's illegal) by replacing it with "Mountain Dew Energy", making the only Mountain Dew, caffeinated Mountain Dew. I still see regular Dew, but no more DC Diet 'Dew.

Rockgamer May 10, 2006 06:58 PM

Okay, I went to wiki so I could try to understand this, and this is what I found:

So you're saying that this version is phasing out regular diet Mountain Dew?

unknown_user May 28, 2006 04:14 AM

I also liked pepsi blue, and all my friends hated it too lol.

I highly doubt any of you will remember Little Debbies Yo Yo's. There was somethin in that creme that made it so much better than Hostess products.

Also Melon heads! They only got lemon heads now. :(
The Daily Double sandwich from mcdonalds was too good, but that went out.

Someone mentioned guacamole doritos, i still see them 'round these parts. ^_^

SunkistTheHedge May 29, 2006 03:58 PM

I remember the year before last . Their was a new heinz ketchup pringles flavor! I only brought them once but then I've never saw them in stores again since and it had a good flavor to it ><

Their was even a doritos flavor that use to be out But i forgot the name!

Rockgamer May 29, 2006 04:21 PM

I just saw a bag of ketchup-flavored Doritos about a month ago. Unfortunately, ketchup doesn't appeal to me as a flavor for chips, so I avoided them. Ketchup-flavored Pringles sound like they would be even worse than the Doritos, though. Maybe that's why they stopped making them.

I remember the Pizza Hut flavored chips. But as for explaining its discontinuation, I would guess because they're promotional things, or something of the sort. "Limited time supply." For example, Mountain Dew Pitch Black, though whatever chemical effects MD can produce to affect a guy's body, that stuff was good. But it was around for a limited time only.

What I really miss is...... well I had it on my mind for a while, but now I've forgotten it :(

What about Pitch Black II? Thats still around I believe, is that alot different from the first one? I dont know myself because i wasnt a fan of pitch black.

Yeah, Pitch Black II is still around, and yes, it is different than the first one. The regular Mountain Dew Pitch Black was basically just a grape-flavored version of MD, but Pitch Black II is a sour grape-flavored version of MD. I personally like Pitch Black II better, as it has more of a kick. I think the general public must have as well, since they kept this verion around.

Ah, Im glad Livewire is still around. I remember when they said it would only be around summer of '03 and then said back for sumemr '04 even though it never was discontinued thru that period. Still around too. w00t

Yeah, pretty much all the extra flavors of Mountain Dew (Code Red, Livewire, Pitch Black II, and Baja Blast) have stuck around, even though they have said they were all limited editions at one point or another. I just wish they would make Baja Blast in cans/bottles, so I won't have to get it at Taco Bell all the time.

Yeah, ive wondered about that. Why is a MD flavor exclusive to Taco Bell?

I just found out last week that those little plastic cups of red, blue or green jelly that have a little plastic spoon are still available.

There used to be this really great sauce by either Ragu or Prego that was pepperoni flavored. Before this sauce, I would never eat a whole bowl of spaghetti because I wasn't that interested in the flavor. After the invention of mini pepperoni's in spaghetti sauce, however, I began to love the taste of spaghetti. Soon after I began to love that sauce, they discontinue the sauce for some odd reason. Anyone know why?

Anyone know if Mountain Dew Live Wire. still comes out in the summer ?

Rockgamer May 30, 2006 08:35 PM

I've been seeing it out year-around, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it. It started off coming out only in the summer, but now it seems to be out all the time.
