Holy shit there's some good stuff coming out soon
So what with being busy as shit and having a backlog of epic proportions, I'd not really looked into what new games are dropping soon but a quick glance at Amazon the other day tells be there's a ton of cool shit coming out and I'm surprised there aren't more threads about the games.
I had no idea there was a new EDF game on it's way for example. I fucking love EDF and have finished the whole thing on Hard and most of Hardest on my own but beyond that, without a second player it's tough as fuck. Thank the lord then that the new one has online co-op multiplayer! Clearly the best idea ever and I shall be buying the shit out of Insect Armageddon as soon as I get paid in August. Next up is the increasingly awesome looking Space Marine in September. That I'm a big GW nerd is no secret here but even for people not into the lore or whatever the game looks sweet as fuck. Basically looking to reclaim everything that Gear of War stole from their IP, it started life as a combat rpg and now seems to be a hardcore, third-person massacre-them-up. None of this hiding in cover till your shield comes back bollocks, in Space Marine you regain life force by killing shit and only by killing shit. The game promises seemless transition between melee and shooting combat, thousands of pixelated bad guys to explode and carve up however you wish and the kind of micro-transaction market that only Little Big Planet has come close to rinsing in recent years. Truly this will be the game of the forever (I hope). Then Battlefield 3 looks pretty tasty. Battlefield has always been up there with my favourite franchises and the new one looks mental. Even on the 360 rather than a £3,000 PC the game seems pretty slick from what I've seen and Battlefield type games never really get boring. Anyway, what games are you planning on picking up in the next couple of months? There's a ton of other shit that isn't on my immediate purchase list but I'll get when the price halves a month after it's released so you guys must be looking forward to some shit. |
I'm planning on purchasing the new EDF. What I've read about it so far leads me to believe that I will find it as enjoyable as EDF 2017. Other than that, I have my eye out for a good sale price on The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and Ys I and II Chronicles.

And XSEED is talking about how much of a huge investment number 2 is. I can't wait. DAT CLIFFHANGER. --------------- Also, summer release schedule sucks ass as per usual but fall starts pretty early this year and doesn't let up until November. For July I have Otomedius Excellent because I'm a douchebag, and Chantelise if Carpe Fulgur/Space Drake's Twitter stays on track. And they rock hard so I'm totally looking forward to that. August is...Dues Ex. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Third Strike Online if the rumours are to be believed. Ditto on Silvergun. September is when shit hits the fan and we have an import of Xenoblade, Star Fox 3DS, Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns, Kirby: Mass Attack, Gears 3, hopefully that Team Ico Collection, and Trackmania 2: Canyon, if that sticks. October is Dark Souls, Assault Horizon, Forza 4, Arkham City and BF3. November is Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and fucking Saints Row 3. So there's a fair bit yeah. |
I'm looking forward to Starfox 3DS, and maybe kirby, but past that i'll probably mostly be focusing on buying a PS3 in fall and playing borrowed games on that until April next year or so.
|
I'm just looking forward to getting Deus Ex, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (preordered both 360 and Steam editions), Modern Warfare 3 (see how it turns out), Battlefield 3 (another one that may surprise me), Skyrim (With a good rig now, will definitely try it out), Rage (because fuck yeah it looks gorgeous!), Arkham City (because fuck yeah Arkham Asylum), Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and 40K: Kill Team for Live (just 'cause), NeverDead (mechanics interest me) and probably a couple more games that I forgot.
There's also Catherine and Cursed Crusade, I guess. I just need to just cut down on interweb time and get some of my games done. |
Man, this year has raped me on games coming out. Damn E3. When I picked up Duke Nukem, I put down $10 each on Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD remasters. Then Silent Hill 8... then the Silent Hill Collection...
Do want Arkham City though. And even though I'm not good at those kind of games, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim looks amazing. |

So Shin, have you gotten any play time with the Space Marine demo that hit the other day? If so, thoughts on it?
|
Oh yeah! That does hit the PSN today. I'm downloading it nao. I'll fiddle around with it later... but it looks really good.
Also, Total Biscuit did a video on it. He seems to have had a ton of fun playing it:
|
Echoing my new sig/ava combo, I just picked up Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I'll post a proper review once I'm farther into the game, but so far I don't have any legit complaints.
|
SM demo's pretty awesome. Played it on Steam and it looks and plays beautifully.
Instead of healing items, you get to execute your opponent in a gruesome faction which in turn restores your health. There's also the Fury option which, if filled, restores health on every melee strike. Otherwise its standard "do objective a to proceed to another area", but I like its execution. Especially when you get the jump pack at the second demo mission, oh god. |
Warhammer 40k Space Marine kicks so much ass. I haven't had fun playing just the demo of a game in a while. Can't wait for the full game.
The game is kinda tough too. Even when I was testing it out on easy, I found myself overwhelmed a good number of times. I didn't notice much frame dropping with a ton of enemies on screen at once, either. Executions are pretty damn brutal and expected no less from this. I believe Relic did a damn good job on this. I might even pick it up on PC to play on the Dawn of War II rig I won from E3. I just hate that there are so many games coming out this year, and so little money. :( |
Just bought the first component that's going to be part of my new gaming PC so I can play Battlefield 3.
Can anyone give me a good reason why not to go with the Intel i5-2500K? I've currently got a GeForce 9800 (which is like bare minimum for the game), but I wouldn't mind waiting a month or two using that if anyone's aware of any new video cards coming soon that might push the Radeon HD 6850 or GeForce 460 down in price (or maybe a new card that'll replace them)? |
XFX Radeon HD 6870 Graphics adapter - 1 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM
I am using this RR and it's real good. Probably too much for you though. I'm actually going to get Battlefield 3 for 360 (my first battefield game!) just because I know I dont have a top of the line card to really push Battlefield, and the fact that many of Xbox buddies will be playing it there. I see no reason why should even get Battlefield on the PC with a low-end card RR. I do know you are not a console guy though, so I may not be able to turn you. :p Deus Ex rocks by the way. |
Deus Ex
And now that its coming to Xbox 360 - Goldeneye |
The demo for space marine may have just played its way into a 'buy' slot for me. That was a lot of fun.
|
Yeah, I too was surprised by it.
Dunno if I'll rent it or what, but it's certainly a pleasant surprise. Shame about it's release window. |

I've not had a chance to play it yet, what with it being the last week of the season I've been forced to go out and get drunk pretty much every night this week. I did buy, and have been playing a load of EDF which is awesome. I might download the demo now and play it when I get in later.

Oh hey so I played the Space Marine demo and the game is pretty awesome, I won't be cancelling my pre-order. Hopefully they'll keep the mp maps nice and small to encourage full on slaughter. I also downloaded the Fire Team game which is top fun too, and very silly.

So, if you need a wingman for the purging of greenskins (or bug control in New Detroit), do drop me a line. |
Multiplayer in EDF is weirdly tempremental. Some days if you hit Quick Match you'll get an endless loop of unable to connect/connection has timed out forcing you to choose a custom match instead whereas somedays you just drop straight in over and over. The random element of Quick Matches is hilarious though as you've no idea what skill the game is on until you join meaning if you take a high-level character and it's people boosting crap ones on easy you ruin their game by decimating the bad guys whereas if they're playing on Inferno and you enter with a low-level guy you have to just run for your life until they manage to kill everything, all the while making it harder just by being there (And causing so many more aliens to spawn). I've still not finished vanilla campaign on Inferno yet, 2-1 is kicking my level 7 Tactical guy's arse. It's the damn bomb spiders that do it, although the slow-down works in your favour as you can get ticks off really easily.

Oh hey so Space Marine is awesome. I've played through most of the single player (Chapter 13 was kicking my arse last night, I was too drunk to manage it) and played a bit of multiplayer (Level 5 right now) and it's awesome. I love the fact that so many games try to have a proper badass as the main character and some do ok except they have health packs instead of launching yourself into hordes of the enemy and murdering them in the most brutal fashion possible to regain health. Towards the end of the single player campaign (On normal at any rate) you do need to start hiding behind stuff and popping out to kill people but for most of the game it's entirely feasable to just charge headlong into the enemy and just fuck shit up until everyone's dead. It's a real shame there's no campaign co-op because that'd be hilarious, can't wait for Exterminatus to launch.
Multiplayer is pretty great too. The balancing seems ok so far although that could be because people've not had time to work out which is the "best" weapon yet. One feature I do like is being able to select the load out of the person who killed you when you respawn which means someone can't dominate just because they've levelled up a ton and have the best gear. Also, the customiser is awesome, allowing changes to the minute detail of the colour schemes meaning someone like me who grew up with Dark Angels having yellow trim on their shoulder pads can udjust their skin accordingly. It's a game for massive nerds but it's also a great game for people into shooters in general. Like Gears of War mixed with the swarms of bad guy cannon fodder from something like Too Human (Or not, if you're one of the many people who didn't enjoy that game). |
I'm like 12 in Steam but about 26 on Live. True, the multi part is so much fun. While you die pretty quick, you get in the fight fairly quickly.
I'm like.. Chapter 3 or 4 something in the story though. So far, great game. Love the hell out of it. |
Yeah, being able to choose between instant respawn at your home base or wait a bit and spawn at a capture point or on a team mate is a nice touch too. I'm using the quick respawn perk a lot at the moment, mainly because I die a lot!
Also, the extra shit in the collectors edition wasn't worth the cash, but the massive, book shaped box it came in was. |
Welp, Namco just saved the entire planet 60 dollars.
Assault Horizon demo came out today. Haha, oh wow. It's more of an insult to Ace Combat than Other M was to Metroid. It's atrocious on a level rarely seen. Rubber plane? Go for it. Bounce off all the buildings you want. Even Xardion's an ace player now. Regenerating health? Yup, fuck up all you want, no big deal. Dog Fight Mode plays the game for you? It's even worse than the trailers indicate. It can and will turn the plane for you, and it will make some enemy classes either impossible or incredibly unlikely to be downed if you don't use it. Because their health regenerates too, and the only way to realistically land 5ish missiles on them is with DFM. Out of curiosity, I tried the demo a second time. To see if I could play it and beat it without touching the control stick after entering DFM. Flew up to 8 or so enemies, only lost DFM mode once. I WASN'T EVEN CONTROLLING THE PLANE. I thought that one trailer with all the missile follow kills was a dude controlling the camera to do that (like you could in the old games), nope this is automatic and there are parts that basically go SWAP TO ALT WEAPON AND FIRE NOW and then it will automatically show some ridiculous kill cam where everyone dies automatically. Also, several of the kills are scripted. Oh, and there's QTEs. And one button counter maneuvers. And the helicopter mode is silly. It controls like an FPS, kind of. Unnatural and confusing, there is no weight to the machine and no sense of inertia in your movements. Even the arcadey chopper controls in Bad Company 2 are deeper than this. Game is for people with single digit IQs. |
One thing to watch for over in Space Marine multiplayer: charged plasma shots seem to act like Halo plasma grenades. Of course, unlike the aliens making up the Covenant in that game, Orks don't let a thing like getting stuck with a soon-to-explode blob of energy stop them from wanting to hew your face off.
And I'm still convinced they dropped the ball on the subject of avatar goodies. Seriously, no Adeptus Astartes armor? No chainsword? Only representing one of the four Dark Gods in terms of Chaos apparel? Since we're in the neighborhood, I'm not sure why many reviewers seem to dislike Too Human so much. I still haul this out every now and again; plasma-spec commando with human alignment works very well... Quote:
This concerns me greatly; awesome soundtrack, interesting story, et cetera can't save a game from horrible gamplay. Sadly, things like this are an almost-inevitable result of the (often marketing-driven) quest for 'accessibility to a wider audience' - which usually doesn't end well for the game in question. |
SILBER squadron is officially denouncing Assault Horizon.
Every complaint Skills listed is true and then some. After only a couple of minutes I wanted nothing more than to turn off the demo, but Skills wanted to see what happens if you don't push the QTE commands at the end of the plane section. The game asks you to press Y twice, and it waited 3-5 seconds before blowing me up for not pressing it the second time. I then restarted at the last checkpoint which was after pressing Y the first time. Speaking of dumb mini-games, occasionally you get targeted from behind by missiles and are supposed to stay out of the target lock circle before doing a counterattack. However, if you never do the counter and just wait for the enemy to go away it becomes obvious that the enemy showed up completely out of nowhere just to bug you before going back into whatever nether-dimension it was spawned from. Another huge problem is that the game designers forgot how perspective works. See that tiny enemy plane way off in the distance? Still tiny when it's 2 feet away from you. It makes gauging distance by anything other than the numbers impossible. Oh, and it's also flat out impossible to die from crashing unless you're already heavily damaged. I tried smashing nose first, 90 degree angle into the ground and bounced. I tried crashing into the base of a building and teleported/bounced out on the other side of it. The planes are made out of Nerf, and it's honestly the only fun thing about the demo. I'm not even going to get started on the helicopter section. As Skills said, it controls like an FPS and is devoid of all fun. Maybe I was still just irritated from the awful plane segment, but it has never been less fun to fire an aerial barrage of missiles that wipes out a large section of enemies. |
Well, I'm glad I clicked on this thread then, now I don't have to feel bad about skipping Ace Combat.

Anyone picked up Solatorobo yet? Shit's kinda easy but gorgeous and pretty fun. There seems to have been some distribution problems but otherwise it seems to be in stores now.
|
I did and it is. It's great.
|
I've loved what little I've played of Solatorobo so far. It's easy and I wish there was more depth to combat, but it's enough fun that I don't mind.
|
There's little hope in me that maybe Ace Combat:AA retail will be different from the demo. I know I'm fooling myself=[. Wish DFM actually required some skill..and that they stuck with only the fighter jet scenarios. AC-130..and choppers? really..just to get what..the CoD players to buy this?
Sigh...oh well..save my money for batman AC or Uncharted 3..or both. I'll go rent it for a day to see if it surprises me or to see how badly Namco decided to f**k it up. |

So is it just me or does Dark Souls seem just a tad easier than Demon's Souls? You can still get fucked pretty easily if you aren't careful, but it seems like the bosses are easier somehow. It could just be because you can get the Drake Sword early on and kick the shit out of everything in the early game, but still.
Either way, I'm still enjoying the hell out of it. I love the new open world aspect and the monster designs are terrifying as usual. Damn basilisks in the sewer are probably the creepiest game monster I've ever seen. I really wish they'd let you sell stuff though, because I've picked up so much garbage armor and weapons and there's nothing to do but store or drop it. Pointless. |

And those of us waiting for the Exterminatus DLC pack will have to wait a bit longer; it's been delayed to the 25th (reference). |

Spoiler:
As for being easier than Demon's Souls, it seemed that way at first, but now I'd say it's roughly even if not more difficult. While I like some of the changes such as the open world and the new magic system others are pretty bad. The ability to teleport between bonfires should be given much sooner (I still don't have it, for the record) and multiplayer has been made worthless. If you can actually manage to summon someone they can be extremely helpful, but thanks to the limit of 10% difference in levels I almost never see any soul signs or get summoned myself anyway. It's made being alive rather pointless, especially since you rarely get invaded anymore either since invading requires a consumable item that I've yet to get any more of since the very beginning of the game. I wandered around in living form for about half an hour tonight looking for soul signs and didn't find a single one. Considering From went to such pains to force you to use only their means of communication by disabling party/private chats it would've been nice if they hadn't completely screwed up their own partnering system. |
Tritoch's pretty spot on.
The combination of humanity being a ridiculous mechanic, along with have very, VERY few disadvantages to being hollow, leaves the game's interactions with other players severely lacking. Which is a shame since it makes the game's best ideas completely worthless (covenants), while highlighting it's shittiest changes (lack of hub world, entire humanity system). Too bad. :( |

what a laugh anyway no prob dude |
Well speaking of UMvC3 THIS was unexpected. Evo moment #37 in Marvel what (WATCH THE END)
Heroes and Heralds mode: Free post-launch DLC mode. -Works as a clan-based collectible card-game with the cards having different effects in-game. -If you play singleplayer, there's a hitlist kind of grid of characters you have to find and defeat in an area, and if you get a line of characters kind-of like bingo, you unlock a new territory. If you play online, it's more meta with the online with a push/pull element. -Online, you sign up for a team (Heroes or Heralds) and winners are determined between wins each team gets per week vs. the other team. Resets each week, winning team apparently wins more cards (?). -Marvel is doing the artwork for the Marvel cards, Capcom is doing the artwork for the Capcom cards. All the art is brand new. -Over 100 cards to start, DLC cards TBD. -Cards can be primary or secondary. One primary, two secondaries. Secondary cards have actual varying effects. He mentions one as an example that starts you with 3 hyper meter, if secondary only starts you with two. Also they announced a mode where you play as Galactus. Also there is going to be a new CG opening. Now THIS is a worthy re-release of a game for $40. |
That's completely out of left field but actually quite interesting. I'm hoping this card stuff isn't handled poorly, like the shadow battles or any of that, and isn't withheld or overpriced or anything.
But this is Capcom, so. Some of the ideas in it are pretty damn dynamic though. I like it. |
Well the mode itself and the initial 100 cards will be completely free, so hey. Also they said that Capcom is doing the artwork for the Capcom characters, likewise for Marvel, but all of the art is new.
|
...right. But I'm wondering how many new sets are planned, for what price point, and what kind of release schedule, and what kind of powers the DLC cards might give.
I'm hoping it's not poorly handled in many important aspects, that's all. Idea itself is cool as fuck, though. |
They've said that's all TBD, but honestly but whatever point that all comes out it probably wouldn't even really matter given the base number of cards, and the odds of anyone aside possibly me still even playing the game at that point would be pretty low anyway.
|
Direct feed footage of a new cinematic opening for UMvC3, and also of that Heroes & Heralds video that's above but in shit quality.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited now. Also Capcom trolling haaaaard with the Megaman and Breath of Fire cards lol :( Edit: Someone posted this on GAF from the Heralds mode; not sure which card they're using, apparently it's the PHOENIX WRIGHT DOES NOT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR SUPER card: http://www.abload.de/img/835cc0c89d2e82a83bdde6hpss.jpg |
No confirmed appearance by Franziska, but she does get a nod in one of Phoenix' alternates...
More info and other alternates can be found here. |
Oh awesome! There's even a set for Ghost Trick characters Sissel and Lynne. ='D
Additional Spam: I lol'd that there was no set for Apollo or Trudy though. It's like Capcom wants to forget that ever happened. |

Exterminatus preview video hosted by THQSledgehammer. Because Last Stand in DoW2 was so well-received, Relic and THQ believed they would be remiss were something similar to not find its way into Space Marine. |
|
Exterminatus is a blast. Played a wee bit with Skexis today and I enjoyed it.
However, those expecting to complete weapon challenges in this mode will be disappointed. The kills in this mode count for nothing in regards to weapon unlocks. Will they change this? I hope so. I'm not fucking doing Vengeance unlocks in ordinary multiplayer. |

I .... what?

Also just out is the latest update for Gran Turismo 5 and some DLC cars, a couple of tracks, a bunch of new paint colours and helmets and crap, including the very silly Red Bull X2011 which is a theoretical concept car that's damn near impossible to drive on your first attempt but also a very easy way to get the 111 metres per second trophy. Free update adds in-car view for standard model cars and probably some other stuff, I didn't really read all the description. Additional Spam: Apparently there's even more Space Marine DLC coming soon: Looky here. |
