Attention PSN Users - Your Information Just Got Stolen

http://i.imgur.com/VEUcq.png

Guess what? Sony screwed up big time, and someone now has your information! Just which information?

Quote:

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID.
But that's not all, they also might have gotten this stuff!

Quote:

It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained.
And as if this wasn't bad enough:

Quote:

While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.
Now is a good time to change your passwords! It's also a good time to consider changing your credit card number! Check for emails from DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net to see which card they have on file. As for your password, well... right now you can't change or check it.

GOOD JOB SONY! :cmbirthday:

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 26, 2011 06:35 PM

I don't see how this is some INSANE issue. Okay, having all that credit card information (if the hacker(s) have it, I don't see how since theres been CC encryption since the advent of online purchasing) is fucking horrible and Sony is never going to get back the level of trust they once had.

But pretty much EVERYTHING ELSE IS A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD. And whoop-de-fucking-do that some guy might have my PSN password because THAT REALLY MEANS SOMETHING IF THE NETWORK IS SHUT DOWN.

value tart Apr 26, 2011 06:41 PM

That's absolutely true. The CC issue is a big one, though, and people having your PSN password means something for those people (like me, formerly) that use the same password for everything.

More than anything I'm just letting people know so that regardless of how much they care they know what went out there.

It's inexcusable that they spent a week pretending nothing drastic happened. Up until today all we'd heard was that there was "an intrusion" and it was made to sound like they'd just taken the network down, not actually taken shit.

I agree with these things as well.

However, a lot of people online are super alarmist and like to see people wave their arms so THEY know how to react. You have to be careful about the precedent you set when you open threads like this. Acting like the place is on fire is only going to make people think its the smart thing to do.

value tart Apr 26, 2011 07:14 PM

Well, I suppose I sounded a bit more alarmist than I intended. More than anything I'm trying to come across as mad. I just came off of redoing EVERYTHING after Gawker got hacked and subsequently revealed to be absolutely incompetent chucklefucks, and I'm mad that Sony took as long as they did to reveal that the possibility of the information being stolen exists.

I'd just rather see the information get spread quickly so everyone who cares enough to go the full nine yards with protecting their info gets the headsup.

Radez Apr 26, 2011 07:31 PM

Yeah, I'm sad I have to change my passwords to everything now. I don't even remember all the shit I used that password for.

Dark Nation Apr 26, 2011 08:04 PM

I think I may have had a PSN account with them, but I never used it for anything other then downloading a game or two for my PSP back in the day. At the same time though, better safe then sorry. I'll be changing my info whenever the network goes back up.

...and here I was contemplating getting a PS3 to play blu-rays with, with a couple games on the side as a bonus

The thing is, their CC encryption is shit. Crossposting from reddit:

Quote:

We know that credit card details, including CC number, expiry date and CVV were sent as GET requests in URLs to Sony's servers. The URLs sent look like this:

Code:

creditCard.paymentMethodId=VISA&creditCard.holderName=Max&creditCard.cardNumber=45581234567812345678&creditCard.expireYear=2012&creditCard.expireMonth=2&creditCard.securityCode=214&creditCard.address.address1=example street%2024%20&creditCard.address.city=city1%20&creditCard.address.province=abc%20&creditCard.address.postalCode=12345%20
Since these were sent over SSL, they were encrypted while in transit but ultimately end up back in the same format on Sony's servers, and will almost certainly be stored in HTTP server logs in plaintext if nowhere else. The question is how long these logs are kept for and whether they resided on one of the servers which was compromised.

Did this within an hour of reading the press release; between the option of putting a fraud alert on my card and potentially tripping it myself as I went out of country to the meet in a few weeks, figured this was the much better option.

Hilariously fucked up: Only US accounts have gotten these emails, even though all regions everywhere had the information stolen. Clearly they just don't give a fuck. Awesome!

The only possible way I can think of to check passwords is if you saved the password in your browser and used their site or store.playstation.com for anything.

I'm lucky all mine are unique but still.

That said, saw this via GAF.

Perhaps you need to look up what the word "indefinite" means before you complain about wording.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Apr 27, 2011 12:22 PM

Words have multiple meanings. You know as well as I do that indefinite can be and often is used as a synonym for unlimited or endless. Especially in business speak. That headline is a touch misleading, yes.

A better one would have used indeterminate. But this is picking nits. There's a tonne of misinformation out there right now.

LIAR Apr 27, 2011 01:11 PM

Something to consider, and a reason for everyone to change their passwords regardless of how insane you get over all of this:

If you have a CC tied with your PSN account, even if they don't have the CC info itself, they can log into PSN accounts with said CC info and rack up a huge CC bill in psn purchases. This is unlikely, but something to note.

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 27, 2011 02:40 PM

Well, right now they can't, but should the service come back up, and people DON'T change their password, then yeah.

I think the bigger issue will be when the service does come back, and people don't change their security question. Or date of birth. Assuming Sony does not remove the option of resetting your password WITHOUT an email verification. Since you know, changing your password won't do much good if some dude has every other info one needs to reset the password.

Getting off the subject of LeHah being an ass, anybody get an e-mail from Sony about this yet? Not that it'd do any good days after everybody has already known but it'd be interesting to see how much they actually care. I got one yesterday night.

nuttyturnip Apr 28, 2011 07:13 AM

Finally got the email this morning, actually. Many folks I Know still hadn't gotten one as of yesterday.

Dopefish Apr 28, 2011 08:49 AM

I was surprised to see an e-mail from them yesterday afternoon but then I remembered I had to sign up for a PSN account for some PSP shit. I'm not sure if there's any information I'm terribly concerned about being out there (for one, I did not use my credit card at any point) but, well, I'm probably just as alarmed as everyone else that Sony's shit got hacked.

An interesting tidbit in the e-mail:
Quote:

Under Massachusetts law,
you have the right to obtain any police report filed in regard to this incident.
If you are the victim of identity theft, you also have the right to file a police report
and obtain a copy of it.

Massachusetts law also allows consumers to place a security freeze on their
credit reports. A security freeze prohibits a credit reporting agency from
releasing any information from a consumer's credit report without written
authorization. However, please be aware that placing a security freeze on
your credit report may delay, interfere with, or prevent the timely approval
of any requests you make for new loans, credit mortgages, employment, housing
or other services.
I'm curious if that section was automatically generated for me because I'm a Massachusetts resident?

Animechanic Apr 28, 2011 09:06 AM

I got the email yesterday.

And yeah, that is a special bit for Massachusetts. On the playstation blog they posted the same info the emails contained, but had links for Massachusetts residents and Puerto Rico residents.

Philia Apr 28, 2011 10:44 AM

Finally got mine early this morning. Was wondering what was the hold up was. Gee. I am not even sure what's my password is but I do hope when it boots back up, they'll still send an email password confirmation? Or is that just asking too much?

ALSO.

YouTube Video

Animechanic Apr 28, 2011 11:15 AM

According to the Q&A thing they posted on the blog today, there will be a prompt to change your password the first time you log back in. Not sure how that really helps considering that the hackers have all the info they need to log in and change your password before you do.

Lacerta Apr 28, 2011 12:19 PM

My JP account got the e-mail shortly after the announcement of what happened, my US account still has not gotten just got the e-mail. :V

It's good that the CC info was encrypted (however strong it was encrypted is up to debate considering personal info is plaintext) since it's not too hard to guess a new security code / expiration date if the number stays the same. Don't even need the security code either if buying plane tickets :|

Dark Nation Apr 28, 2011 06:08 PM

Well I got the email this morning finally too. Thankfully I was able to get a new debit card, AND I took the liberty of getting a second account exclusively for online purchases at my bank earlier today, so I probably will be okay. About time I did so anyway.

So now with the lawsuits already filed, I wonder how Sony's already pretty abysmal PR department is going to handle this one.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Apr 30, 2011 05:21 AM

Well if the hackers did get hold of anyone's credit card information and they use it fraudulently, in Europe at least Sony will fall foul of the PCI (Payment Card Industry) rules which govern the storage of people's CC details. Fucking that up can lead to a fine of up to £1million and being forced by the banks to review all your security procedures and implement new ones, a rather costly exercise in itself. I'm not sure if PCI compliance is in effect in the US although I very much doubt it, given that chip and pin still seems to be a terrifying new concept for some people over there.

In general terms Sony ain't going to miss a million quid but the damage to investor confidence will really hurt them, as will having to re-build their security systems and the fact that people won't trust PSN for a while. This could end up being a really costly error on Sony's part.

Maris May 1, 2011 07:34 AM

ok Russia is part of Europe so i do`not need to worrying any more :)

Anyone here ever play an SOE game, especially non-US people? More incoming bad news. Earlier today all Sony Online Entertainment games were taken down:

Quote:

"We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."
Now this was just posted:

Quote:

Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack. Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) and about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have also been obtained - we will be notifying each of those customers promptly.

There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment.

We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company, but on May 1st we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen and we are notifying you as soon as possible.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the attack and as a result, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off all SOE game services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
How...how do you fail this bad? I don't even.

Edit: Apparently this is not a new attack, this occurred in the original attack, but they only discovered the SOE breach within the last 24 hours. That's like....even worse.

The Plane Is A Tiger May 2, 2011 06:54 PM

I was just reading about that over at Joystiq, but I guess Daravon already got here with the news. It's impressive how this manages to get worse and worse when it was already so pathetic on Sony's part to begin with.

I went by the bank and cancelled my debit card (never used my credit on PSN) today, so now I'm just going to sit back and wait for next week's announcement from Sony that the hackers got our SSNs too somehow.

Misogynyst Gynecologist May 3, 2011 06:51 AM

Call me dense - but whats the difference between the SOE service and PSN exactly?

map car man words telling me to do things May 3, 2011 07:09 AM

Sony said on Saturday it had removed off the Internet the personal details of 2,500 people that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website.

The data included names and some addresses, which were in a database created in 2001, a Sony spokeswoman said.

Sony also said it would delay the restart of its PlayStation Network despite having said last Sunday that it would begin restoring services within the week. A spokeswoman said on Saturday this would not be possible, and that no date had been fixed for the restart.

I would like a chance to play MAG some time this decade though.

(Strangely, PSN is down but game updates are still available?)

SailorDaravon May 8, 2011 07:36 AM

Game updates are house on separate servers or something like that, so they've been working. I think just anything that requires you to get through the PSN user/pass is down, which is why Netflix on PS3 seems to still be working for most people.

I hadn't even tried Netflix until you said something. I just assumed that I couldn't sign on to it without PSN being active. Weird. (It does give me the fucking PSN sign-on prompt four or five times before letting me in though.)

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 9, 2011 01:38 PM

It's having to tell GT5 that no I don't want to sign into PSN four times each time I play it that has turned me off playing it in the last few weeks.

Well, that and the five minutes loading between races of course.

Animechanic May 9, 2011 09:04 PM

They've apparently realized that giving actual updates is pointless at this point. No new posts on the playstation blog since May 6th. Probably a good thing though. Thus far every time they have said "soon", "in the next few days", or "within a week" they have immediately found a new problem.

Tails May 9, 2011 09:29 PM

Quote:

We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.

If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

So far only the northeastern part of the US consisting of New York and New Jersey up to Maine has it back. That's really surprising, I thought California of all places would've been first.

Also, the blog is getting hammered. Messages such as: "Error 50x An error has occurred… We have been notified about this issue and will get it resolved shortly…" and "Maintenance We're making a few quick changes and the site will be back online in just a few moments." are coming up. XD

Edit 18 minutes later: California has it back now.

Dr. Uzuki May 15, 2011 06:54 PM

I've downloaded and installed the update, yet when the window comes up telling me I'm going to have to change my password, clicking ok only results in the ok button flashing for a bit and then getting an error message kicking me back out to the menu. Maybe it's just because of an overload of requests at once or service hasn't been restored to my region, I don't know. I was hoping to download some rock band songs today, though. :(

Well, at least it's SOMETHING. I'll be grabbing WipeoutHD and LBP-PSP at the very least.

Shame that I own all those PS3 games except for Dead Nation, which I don't really care about. PSP I guess I'll grab...uhhh....Modnation Racers? Fuck if I know (or care). I'd suggest Wipeout to everyone and their dog if they hadn't ruined it by doubling load times and patching in advertisements for auto insurance after you bought the damn thing.

The Playstation Plus stuff should give you access to a few freebies that can be kept after the free subscription period ends. Which might be the best part of this.

Hope they don't try anything fishy with existing credit cards on file and auto-renew you for the Playstation Plus sub after the month rolls up.

No interest in LBP, already beat inFamous, and already own Dead Nation and Wipeout. Will definitely get Super Stardust though (that was on my wishlist anyway). Zero interest in any of the PSP games, but I think I've heard that Killzone was actually not bad.

Is this free games business only for those that have bought shit from PSN before or can anyone get up on this deal? I mean I have a PS3 but I rarely use it. Pretty sure I have a regular account or some such that you make when you first try to get online.

Sousuke May 16, 2011 06:38 PM

I think you just have to HAVE an account. That's what it sounds like, anyway.

dagget May 16, 2011 06:48 PM

Already have LBP on PS3. Guess I'll go after Wipeout. Haven't played inFamous yet, am I missing out?

Nothing strikes my fancy on PSP. Killzone: Liberation was ok. Just not a game I could get into. Maybe I'd get LBP for PSP, but that's a big maybe.

30 days of PSN+ access isn't bad, a great trial to see if I want to get the service. Also, I wonder what "select movies" we'll get. Incoming WWE films like The Marine and The Chaperone that they can't even sell on DVD.

Freelance May 16, 2011 07:56 PM

So uh, if you have both a PS3 and a PSP, you can get 4 free games?

Too bad I already have Wipeout + Fury on disc (awesome game by the way so everyone should get that if they don't have it already), and I have been interested in Dead Nation and I'll guess I'll get Super Stardust HD. On the PSP front, I'll get Pursuit Force even though I have no clue what that is, and I already have Modnation Racers on UMD although I didn't care for it much. The others don't interest me.

Seems like it's not quite as fixed as they thought yet.

We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.

Surprise, surprise, the PSN store is not coming back today after all, and we're back to the vague "before the end of the month". At this point, Sony should start accepting money orders, and mail out the games on floppy discs.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jun 2, 2011 03:49 PM

So the PSN store is back online now but there's no sign of free shit. Is this something we have to wait for or am I looking in the wrong place?

Tails Jun 2, 2011 04:28 PM

They're still "working" on that part. Expect it later.

dagget Jun 2, 2011 04:52 PM

I checked it when the store was up early this morning, and saw that we have until 6/07 to claim our free month of PSN+ service. Everytime I tried to click on the link it told me I didn't have the service to access it. I lol'd.

The Welcome Back pack is fully up and running here now so you can get your free games. I left my PS3 on overnight to download Wipeout HD and Infamous and it's nearly finished a mere 24 hours later. Of course if I want to actually play either I'll then have to wait ten minutes for them to install then another ten to download the latest patches then fifteen or so for the things to load.

I'm no Xbox fanboy but holy shit does it take a long time to get to actually play things on PS3.
