D&D Boot Camp - Discussion Thread
Welcome to Basic Training for GFF DnD! This thread will be for all rules questions, answers, and just conversation about what happens in the game thread. Try to keep out of character conversations in here - it'll make the game thread look and work better at the end of the day. For this game we have: Rychord - Daituk Orjerbs (Githzerai Avenger) ----Powers Shorty - Luciel (Elf Cleric) ---- Powers Philia - Thia (Shadar-kai Assassin) ---- Powers Dark Nation - Zeno Paradosso (Human Monk/Sorcerer) ---- Powers Stop Sign - Truckbus Grimtooth (Dwarf Warden) ---- Powers Rychord's character is all ready to go, Philia has informed me that she'll be using the Character Builder, and i'm not entirely sure about the rest of you. Let me know if i should put a character together for you, and give me an idea of what you want (race, class, healer, i just want to stab things, etc.). I'd like to have everyone's characters together by next Wednesday or so, such that i can start putting them on Obsidian Portal. I've got a busy weekend of homework i've been putting off ahead of me, but i'll be sure to pop in to the forums every once in a while and answer any questions. Anyone who wanted to play but didn't make this list, don't worry - i'd be glad to run another game if there are still enough people, and Zerg and Deni have said they'll be willing to fill spots if there isn't a party of 5 newbies. You two won't be needed just yet, sorry :eagletear: And we're off! What adventures await our heroes?!?! |
Quick Pick Classes
I want to focus on killing an enemy so much, I'm not very durable (Striker)
Quick Pick Races I look like a regular human:
(MM) Monster race; your racial feats, if any, are very limited |
This means I've got to wait for the next game?
|
I wouldn't worry about it. There are so many games now that you'll probably be playing within a month at this point.
|
Just so I got dibs on uh assassin class. :D Skills having a hand in this of course.

I'll be rolling a dwarven warden, since we have 2 strikers. Should I just send my character builder save file to you? |
With some generous assistance from Skills, I have my character. I'll PM Hawk the character file.

Rychord's character is half up on OP, i haven't copied out the powers yet. DN's character is received, but has holes, i'm guessing my CB's not up to date. I'll look into getting this fixed. |
Here ya go.

Zerg, you should post that class and race summary in the wiki or something. It's pretty good.

Just a heads up Hawkeye, you missed an "r" in my characters name (it's Orjerbs, not Ojerbs). I don't know how complicated that is for you to change on the Portal, so if it's too much of a hassle don't worry about it.
Great job on the sheet by the way, and also great choice of portrait, I couldn't find too many nice ones of Ghitzerai, but that one is perfect! |
DN, don't worry about it - all was fine once i updated. I could fill in the one or two holes fairly easily, so.
I thought that name felt a little off, but i couldn't put my finger on it. Consider it fixed. Also, Thia the Assassin's sheet is now up. Let me know about any changes and/or backstory you guys want to add anytime as we go along. Zeno's up as well. You guys sure like the complicated classes... also noticed that so far we have a striker, another striker, and a hybrid striker/striker. This is going to be... interesting. |
I can't wait to see the adjustments you're forced to make for a party without a healer :tpg:
|
I feel I might be better off switching my character's class if this is going to be the case. I'm not the most experienced D&D player, but I know enough to imagine that a bunch of people playing for the first time without any means to recover health is bound to be a bit of a disaster.
If you guys feel the same, just let me know and I'll roll up an Ardent. That is, if you don't mind Hawkeye. I know you went through some work putting the Avenger up, and I don't want to burden you unnecessarily. |
No I think you guys should stick with this. I'm really keen to see what a party even less balanced than the one about to go up in Pang's game looks like.
|
I don't mind if that's what everyone wants, I just figured it would be best to not make it too hard on everyone who's playing for the first time, as well as on Hawkeye, who, if I understood correctly, is also going to be learning to DM with this game.
Either way, I would like to see what everyone who's gonna be in the game thinks about this. |
Actually, dying quite early would be an invaluable lesson to us all to do over and do better the next time. So I'd love to stick with this if possible. Shorter battles, the more training opportunities for the rest.
I certainly hope I don't appear suicidal in saying so! |
I assumed Shorty was the one who was going to be some sort of Healer class? At least that was implied in conversations a night or two ago.
I hope my character gets time to flex his muscles, I had fun creating the concept, and in playing I'd like to flesh out the details. |
Well, if that is the case then I guess our party will round out all right. Missing a controller isn't as drastic as not having any kind of healing capabilities, if I'm not mistaken. And hopefully Stop Sign's Warden will be built like some kind of truck or bus so that we can all constantly shift around him to avoid damage.

Your wish is my command, sir.
|
Nah, we'll just leave the characters as they are. I just haven't familiarized myself with all of these new classes and all this hybrid nonsense, since Glenn was largely put together long before anything past the first PHB was available from Pang. After that i mostly ignored the new stuff. As long as you guys have some idea of what you're doing, we'll muddle through it.
It's still going to be a while before everything is ready - i need to type out all of everyone's powers so as to add them to the wiki, and this will take some time - so Shorty, don't feel like you need to rush. |
When we started off Pang's first game we didn't really have a healer, it's not an insurmountable problem, Pang's proved how hard it can be to kill DnD characters.
|
Not really. Motsognir is a healer, and Gabriel can heal in a pinch too. When Brigid came in, well...
Let's just say the Horde didn't have to worry about healing for a long, long time :tpg: |
ZERG WHEN YOU EXPLAIN HOW SOMEBODY DIED IN A PARTY WITH THREE HEALERS IT DOES NOT FILL PLAYERS WITH CONFIDENCE
ALSO IT MAKES LURKER CAMPAIGN TO GET YOU BANNED PROBABLY |
DON'T WORRY FOLKS! PANG IS AN EXPERIENCED PC-KILLING DM WHO CACKLES MANIACALLY WHILE THROWING NASTY SWARMS WITH DAMAGING AURAS AT PLAYER CHARACTERS!
That's why he was able to kill someone in a team with two full-time healers and a part-time healer! Or maybe they weren't paying too much attention. But I think it's his fault, not theirs! Hawkeye is a nice guy! Nothing to worry about! He'll be a nice sergeant when you're at D&D Boot Camp, throwing doable challenges until you gain enough confidence to face... the PANG! |
Slowly but surely things are coming together. I haven't had a lot of time to work on this, between homework and Kirby's Epic Yarn, but we're about halfway there. I have everyone's character just about ready (Shorty just needs to name hers) and all of the transferring to the internet is coming along fairly smoothly. I want to get this game started ASAP, but it's looking like it's probably going to take until at least Saturday or Sunday. Sorry about the delay.
|
Everyone's characters are ready! A game thread should be going up soon.
Rychord - Daituk Orjerbs (Githzerai Avenger) ---- Powers Shorty - Luciel (Elf Cleric) ---- Powers Philia - Thia (Shadar-kai Assassin) ---- Powers Dark Nation - Zeno Paradosso (Human Monk/Sorcerer) ---- Powers Stop Sign - Truckbus Grimtooth (Dwarf Warden) ---- Powers Let me know if anything doesn't look quite right. Also, i couldn't find any pictures i liked for Stop Sign and Shorty's characters, so the ones i'm using now are the ones which came with the CB. If you guys want different pics, send me one you like. EDIT: It begins! Please remember to check the thread regularly, and tell us if you can't be around for a while so that we can arrange for a substitute so that the game doesn't shudder to a halt. I'm not going to kick you out via the three strike rule like Pang does, but interesting things may start happening to your character if you aren't paying attention. |
It turns out nothing makes one want to read a thread more than not being allowed to. I feel like a little kid.
Also, i can still see the first bit of the post. May want to fix that. And can still see the thread entirely if i'm not logged in. You guys suck at secrecy. |
They've already start an epic conversation about how you've got cooties and a dumpy ass. Just an FYI!
|
I'm not really too sure if that is possible. I used up the max amount of characters for the thread title, so unless it can be modified to add more text, I guess we'll just have to write nonsense for the first few words.
So, Philia or Skills, is it actually possible to extend a thread title beyond the set limit? (I figure if it is possible Skills would be the one to know) |
Quote:
I have other ways of doing it, but I figured a threadban would be all I would need since you seemed like an honourable guy. But if you want to be a twat about it and pretend to be clever, go right ahead. I'll fix the rest of it. |
I wouldn't look in the thread once things got rolling, but it's really more the principle of the thing. Every time someone propped a post in there i would feel like i had to look at it. Just removing temptations.
|
You have that little self control?
I just hid the thing from guests, too. I am not going to bother making the adjustments so you can't see any of the props in it though. Temptations my ass. |
I've half a mind to start propping every single post in the thread.
But I won't. Since, you know, Hawk's being a real cool guy by running this for us. I actually bought the DM's guide a while back and read through it a good bit, and it seems like an awful lot of work. |
It's more than i initially expected, but finding good materials made things a lot easier. I found a maptools campaign that was completely set up already - all i really need to do in that regard is throw you guys on the board and go. It's mostly setup and writing - i foresee the battles being the easy part (what with you guys doing all the rolling and all i do is control the enemies and count HP). The necessary creativity is probably going to be what gets me.
Don't worry about doing anything else Skills, that's enough. Thanks a lot. |
Just a correction, Hawkeye, you listed Thorn Strike as both an at-will and encounter power on my character sheet on OP. Thorn Strike is an at-will power - Earth Spikes is the encounter power, and is missing from the sheet. Thanks!
EDIT: Also, would it be okay if I switched my alignment to Neutral Good? I had another concept for Truckbus at first, but now that I have changed it, I think Lawful Good doesn't quite fit his character. |
In general, it doesn't matter much. Nobody is going to be paying attention to your alignment except for you.
I don't think we're so silly around here as to enforce roleplaying modes, although it could potentially be hilarious. |
I still want to say that Truckbus is such an awesome random name. Has a nice ring to it! :D
EDIT: Shorty just confirmed with me that she's fine with me covering for her if needed. This is something we should get around to talking about guys. I don't know about you guys, but I don't mind covering for Shorty. I don't think I'd be incapacitated that long anyway to warrant anyone to worry about me too much. ;) |
Zeph: Cool, gotcha.
Philia: You can thank Rychord for that :tpg: |
Hawkeye, when you say kobold minions, you mean minions in the sense that they only have 1 HP, right?
Also, stupid question: my token's the bald bearded dude at L4, right? I just want to be sure. |
yes and yes. I noticed that you found a different picture, but couldn't get it from OP. send it to me or point me to where you found it and i'll fix the token to be correct.
|
Sorry, it was me that put that picture on OP, blank portrait spaces just bug me and it seemed an appropriately Truckbus sort of dwarf. :(
|
Extremely obvious question here, but when you said: "Thia 9, Daituk 9, Zeno 5, Truckbus 3, Luciel 2, Kobold Minions 9, Kobold Slinger 9, Kobold Dragonshields 9" at the end of that round Hawk, those numbers are our HP? Because I noticed you said Koblods have 1HP but I only see 8 monsters total.
Okay basically, can you explain the battle layout and all that jazz? |
I think that token suits Truckbus just fine :tpg:
|
Quote:
Basically, the numbers are just used for turn order and to keep track of combat rounds. When we get back to the Kobolds, we'll know that everyone has had their turn once, and the second round of combat will begin. |
Right, i guess i forgot to really explain anything.
The numbers next to your names are your initiative numbers - these decide the order in which people take their turns. Because all of you initiative numbers happened to land together, you can all go generally whenever you want - however keep in mind that everything resolves in the initiative order, so if you try to do things out of turn you may end up attacking enemies that are already dead (i which case i would let you change your turn, but still). Each turn you can do three things - A Standard action, a Move Action, and a Minor action. A Standard action usually involves you using a power to attack, using an item, or using your Second Wind. A move action is just what it sounds like. Examples would be moving your speed or shifting one square (shifting means enemies won't be able to attack you if you move away). Minor actions are basic things like pulling something out of your bag, drawing or stowing a weapon, etc. These actions can be rearranged. The hierarchy is as follows: Standard => Move => Minor Meaning you can trade your standard action for either a Move or a Minor, and you can trade your Move action for a minor if you wish. You can't go the other way, however. For your first turns, try attacking using your At-will or Encounter powers to hit the baddies. I haven't gotten around to putting your to-hit numbers with each ability on OP, so for now you'll have to calculate them yourself if you feel so inclined. (this is ok because it means that you will know where the numbers come from) Example: Let's say Thia wants to use her Shadow Storm power. The attack is Dexterity vs. AC. Thus, she would take her Dexterity modifier, +5, and add it to her roll. She also gets +3 for her proficiency with rapiers. Half her level is currently 0, and she doesn't have any magic weapons or anything of the like. So Thia would make an attack at +8 vs. AC. This means rolling a d20 and adding 8 to the result. Say she rolls a 7, making the total 15. This would be a hit if she was attacking either the slinger (AC13) or one of the minions (AC15 - a tie is a hit), but would be a miss against one of the dragonshields (AC18). She would then figure out the damage as explained. Also, you should be warned that if you try to leave a square next to one of the enemies by moving, they'll get a free shot at you. This is called an opportunity attack. If you shift, then there is no OA, but you only get to move one square, and you can't move into difficult terrain (the bushes) That should hopefully be enough to get you through your first turn. Most of your characters also have certain abilities that make them special - feel free to ask if you have any other questions. After all, that's why we're here, right? Note: If you'd rather i do your rolls for you for the first while, that's cool too. Just try to follow along and keep up as best you can. |
Adding to the opportunity attack explanation:
Hawk is keeping track of your HP in Obsidian Portal. GFF | Characters | Obsidian Portal |
I'm going to go ahead and play my turn before anyone else, just to break the ice. Hop you don't mind Philia! :D
I'll also post back here with a rundown of my post, just to give you guys an idea of what it all means. Additional Spam: So, here is my turn in detail for you guys. I've taken out the flavor text for ease of reading. Quote:
Which brings us to: Quote:
The attack specifies [Wisdom vs. AC] and the Kobold Dragonshield, as we can see from Hawkeye's post, has 18 AC, which means that the total of my roll plus applicable bonuses will determine if I hit or not, and it has to total 18 or more to hit. My first roll was a 7. My bonuses are the following: This attack uses my wisdom modifier to determine my ability bonus. So my wisdom modifier [+4] is added to the roll. I am proficient with the weapon I am using, the fullblade, so I gain a [+3] proficiency bonus to my roll. Let's tally that up: 7 [roll] +4 [wisdom] +3 [fullblade] = 14 14 < 18 [Dragonshield AC] That's a miss. :( My second roll was 14 so: 14 + 4 + 3 = 21 21 > 18 That's a hit! Now that we've determined that my attack hit, we need to figure out how much damage was inflicted. Quote:
The power description for Overwhelming Strike says that my wisdom modifier [+4] is applied as bonus damage. My character has the Githzerai Blade Master feat. This grants me a [+2] feat bonus to attacks that use my fullblade. So the tally is: 8 [roll] + 4 [wisdom] + 2 [feat] = 14 damage to Kobold Dragonshield! :o Quote:
Notice that I did not use a move action this turn. I chose to do this because the shift allowed me to get into a more advantageous position, so I didn't feel the need to move. I could have used a second minor action instead if I so wished, but I chose not to. So, there you have it, my first turn is now over. If you guys need further explanations on my post, don't hesitate to ask! Additional edit: I've also given and example by my turn of the importance of reading your powers correctly. I'll leave this summary up just for pedagogical purposes. |
alright, i put up the numbers regarding attack bonuses and damage under everyone's powers on your expanded power sheets. It's not terribly pretty, but it'll do for now.
|
Okay, sorry for taking SO DAMN LONG and no problem, I just glad you actually moved first Rychord, something to give me to go on or something. And yes, I have a very LONG chat with Skills covering all sorts of stupid mundane details I didn't know about. Thanks to him, I'll able to get a handle on this thing.
It'll be a bit trying to do creative stuff with this standard/move/minor restrictions. I'll play out what was explained to me for you guys to help (like Rychord did). I don't quite uh grasp everything just yet. So bear with me. READ YOUR POWERS SHEET. READ IT AGAIN. You can only have one Standard, one move type, and one minor. You can substitute for two move types and one minor or three minor for instance. They're also separated by colors: Green means any amount in battle. Red is for encounter only (once per post for info purposes), and grey is for daily which only once per entire day. Skills also went on to explain to me about this time table. In time table, you could have several encounters besides this one. You'll meet more groups of enemies besides this one so its possible that we'd be battling through the entire day and its probably best to save that daily for serious dire consequences or something. The Initiative line is for posters in order who should go next. (Like Grandia... :D ) I knew I was coming up soon, and I felt rushed lmao so I'm glad I made that connection to ask Skills. Because my Dexterity modifier was 5 and the DM roll was a 4, I got 9 so. Now I was looking at the map wondering what the hell did Rychord messed up on but no he just missed. I asked Skills about bushes. YES BUSHES. All he'll ever had known about bush is the darn bushes right there on the map. He said my speed was 6, I have 6 square moves I can do. But the bushes count as difficult terrain and counts as 2 units out of my 6. So I moved in there anyway because going ONto counts as 2 units, you won't get 2 units for backing out of the bush for example. You'll still do if you move into another bush adjacent to it. ALSO, you can move diagonally. Also you do not need to use your MOVE POWER to "move". You can just... move. lol But yes, you need to check your speed stat and see how many squares you can move in. I have an attack called Inescapable Blade that allows me to reach to an enemy 3 squares away. +2 Weapon and I had a rapier bonus so that makes +3. It was an ideal move to prevent a counterattack. (For now anyway since I'm in training.) Then I also casted Assassin's Shroud which has huge range, I could cast it on any enemy in the field since it has Burst 10. From where I was, I can hit that Slinger if possible. But nah I just focus on the attacking units for now. Before anything else in a post, you just type in placeholder text or whatever. Technically its better that you place what you PLANNED TO DO in the post so that way you won't appear as you were cheating (like ZERG) to place that awesome hit amount on another (powerful) enemy or something that you didn't intend to hit beforehand. After your placeholder text is in, hit Roll button. Put in 1d20 (which is the Hit ratio which to CHECK if you hit the enemy or not according to their AC bonus (armor class)) and whatever description you want. Depending on what other powers you got, you can add more damage by rolling another die. In my case since the Minion only has one hp, and my attack was a HIT, I didn't need to do a weapon die. My weapon would been 1d8 and would had finished him off. Bit of an overkill really. And thanks Hawkeye, you added some yellow highlights in there. ;) That'll definitely clarify things. |
You'd be surprised. Swinging on a chandelier counts as your move action and flying off to flykick some dude in the face is your standard which still leaves you with a minor!
|
Why a minor is plenty to still do all that and then snap in to a slim jim. Or you know if you're feeling lame use a utility power whatever.
|
Oh I know, as a newbit, it was a bit much to take on at the moment and suddenly trying to translate that to creativity was "like oh... uh... yeah." So in hindsight, I'll be reading other posters and see what they did. :)
|
Quote:
NOW I've seen everything. |
Hold up. Which ones are the minions and which ones are the dragonshields? I see minions being attacked at J5 and M5 in the other posts, but they have different tokens.
|
Well, my guess would be:
J5, K5, L5, G12, J12 - minions M5, N5 - dragonshields G11 - slinger So I'm guessing DN didn't actually kill the one at M5, if that's relevant to anyone's turn. Hawk, a good way to convey this for groups of similar-looking enemies is what I did in the kuo-toa fight; just slap down small versions of the tokens next to the defense data so people will immediately associate them. |
Pang's got them right. Dragonshields to the south, the rest are minions except for the one that looks different.
|
Quote:
|
Thanks for clearing that up! :)
|
Uh... DN is the guy on top isn't he? If he was, he made an mistake by putting M5 on his post when it should had been K5?
Man okay, LET MET PUT IN THE AVATARS IN THERE FOR CONVENIENCE SAKE. Rychord - http://i51.tinypic.com/33cr9d1.jpg Stop Sign - http://i54.tinypic.com/14dq534.jpg Dark Nation - http://i53.tinypic.com/r8v6vp.jpg And your map. When I was talking to DN last night helping him through this process he meant to hit the damn minion in front of him. In other words I thought he input in K5, I didn't see that he put in M5 unless he changed it last night. But lol, shit happens when you don't pay attention I suppose. |
uhhh.. yes? He was perfectly capable of hitting the M5 dragonshield, so i didn't think much of it. The attack was close blast 3, which is why he was able to try to hit the other two kobolds as well. I'm not psychic, sorry - if you say you do one thing i can't always guess if you actually meant to do something else. Either way, the last minion at close range is toast as soon as its turn comes around, so it all worked out in the end.
EDIT: Advice for Shorty (assuming you want it) Healing word is a minor action, and never misses. instead of rolling a d20, roll a d6 to see how much extra healing the target receives. You've still got a standard action with which to hurt something. I'll let you use the roll you already did, because it would be a shame to let a 19 go to waste. |
I'm planning to move the game forward tonight, so if you plan on doing anything else with your turn, Shorty, you'd best do it this evening sometime.
That said, sorry the game is moving so slowly, everyone. I should really look into getting aim so i can harass you all more effectively. |
I wouldn't worry about it too much Hawkeye. The combat side of the game is where the rules really get involved and I know from experience that tends to slow things down for groups who aren't au fait with the whole thing. Ironically, once everyone knows what they're doing, the reverse becomes true with nobody really doing anything significant betweenm fights until someone steps up and takes the leadership role, dragging the others along with them. Basically, everyone here is too polite to take charge. :)
|
Hawkeye, if you're going to get into AIM to speak to all of us, it might be a good idea to set up an AIM Blast room so that all of us can speak to each other chatroom style if needed. It's like IRC, but through AIM.
If this seems like a good idea, I can set it up. |
And Rychord needs to sign up for AIM also.
What's your aim Stop? YOU NEVER DID REPLY TO MY PM. ;_______________; |
I never got it and holy crap when did you become a moderator? I'm so out of the loop :D
Anyway, my AIM is evilpentane. Feel free to get in touch with me, all. |
It's only been a little over four days since the PCs' turn started. All in all, four days for five players isn't too bad by historic standards here.
Nothing to worry about, Hawk. It is the very first battle. Time needed to acclimatize and all. |
Hawkeye, my shadow storm attack has "+1 damage for each creature adjacent to the target". Does this also mean it'll hit the Minion on J10 diagonally?
|
No; it only hits one enemy, it just does more damage to that enemy for each other enemy that it's next to. The dragonshield is adjacent to two other enemies, and so you'll do two more damage than you would if he were alone: 1d8+7, instead of 1d8+5.
|
Thanks for clearing that up. Little details like that escapes me. Will edit in my wording.
|
Hawk, I'm ready to play my turn, but before I do, I just want to confirm with you that the second dragonshield is dead. Since the other one had taken 18 damage, I'm not sure if the 15 damage from Philia's attack is sufficient to dispatch the second one. Is it dead?
|
I have a question too: what does the border and little icon on my character signify?
|
Dragonshield's not even close to being dead. It's not even bloodied yet. Philia, you might want to invoke your shroud on that attack / put another one on beforehand. If you switch targets all shrouds on the enemy you were targeting disappear.
DN, the icon on your character signifies that you're bloodied. The border signifies that i wasn't paying attention and forgot to deselect your token before taking the screenshot (aka it means nothing). |
Oh. It has that large amount hp? Gee. K, thanks for the heads up.
It should be fixed now. |
I think I'm getting the hang of things, but if I completely screwed up my rolls, can you redo them for me, Hawk? (and can you remove my sig from my other post Philia? Forgot to uncheck that box :( )
|
Is a kobold corpse considered difficult terrain?
|
I don't even think a live kobold is difficult terrain.
(no. You can stand on spaces taken up by dead, dying or prone creatures/characters.) |
The two stacked corpses = difficult terrain thing is a house rule I added to the Arena, in a most likely unsuccessful attempt to spice up the existing terrain with terrain deformation of sorts. Doesn't extend to Pang or Hawk's campaigns.
|
Thanks!
|
Both the Dragonshield and the southern minion are dead after Daituk's attack, so don't bother attacking them anymore.
|
*Crosses fingers that I did things right this time*
Maybe you should do my rolls for a bit Hawk? I feel like a fool not getting this down yet. Also, sorry about the lateness of the post, was busy with Trick or Treaters tonight. |
Minions by D&D 4e definitions have only 1 HP. So Daituk's already destroyed the one you're targeting (on J9) :P This is also why my Earth Spikes automatically eliminated the one minion on the beginning of its turn.
|
Stop Sign's right, that one's already dead.
You got the rolls perfectly, DN. The only thing would be to avoid calling the damage roll attack - since an "attack roll" is the actual term for the to-hit roll and as such could get very confusing very fast. Unfortunately, you already used Thundering Roar once this battle, so you can't do that. If you use your daily, Cacophonous Shout, you could hit both the minion and the slinger (if you moved to where Thia just was). Or you could just use one of your at-will attacks to hit the minion. Lemme know which and i'll fix it for you. i really need to try to figure out how to get those ever-so-handy checkboxes on the side like Pang has on the old wiki. |
Alright, I thought that the upper two monsters were the ones that were dead, my bad. At least I got the rolls right. I'll fix everything now. If I screw up things again, go ahead and work your magic while I work on getting this DnD thing down pat.
|
What time is it? Learning time! Yaaaaay!
I'm going to explain a little more about your powers. Each power, underneath the name and the flavor text, has this important little section: Daily ♦ Implement, Psionic, Thunder Standard Action ♦ Close Blast 3 Let's do this bit by bit. The first part tells you how often you can use a power: At-Will: can be used any number of times during a fight. Encounter: can only be used once per battle. (unless the power specifies otherwise - ex. Healing Word can be used twice) Daily: can only be used once per in-game day. The second part contains a group of keywords regarding the power. These are usually referenced by other powers or magic items. For example, if Zeno had an item which improved his attack rolls using any power with the "thunder" keyword, this power would get that bonus. Implement means that magical implements like a +1 holy symbol would give this attack +1 to attack and damage rolls. The third part explains what kind of action you use to use the power. most attacks are standard actions, for example. some of you have things you can do as minor actions. Thia's shroud is a free action, which means she doesn't have to use any of her actions to do it. The last part is important. This defines the range of your attack. Melee Weapon - the attack has the same range as your melee weapon. This usually means a range of one (though some long spears can reach 2 squares i think) Melee Touch - you have to be able to touch the target, so range of one. Simple. Ranged Weapon - The attack uses the range of your ranged weapon. Luciel's longbow has a range of 20/40 (20 range normally, 40 range with a -2 penalty), so Silvery Arrow has the same attack range. Ranged 10 - The attack has a range of 10. pretty simple. These last two require pictures to help explain. Close Blast 3 - You hit a 3x3 square next to you. This is the range for Zeno's Cacophonous Shout and Thundering Roar. In the picture, any of the 3x3 squares shown are valid options. Ignore the funny maptools symbol in the picture. I really need to start paying more attention before i take screenshots. Close Burst 5 - Luciel's Healing Word has this range. The target is defined as "you or any ally in burst", so at this point Luciel could heal anyone within the shaded square (if she hadn't used both of her Healing Words already). That should be about that. Also, i've got AIM up and running, look up hawkeyegff if you've got questions. Or if you're lonely. Whatever. |
Okay, I went ahead and created an AIM Blast group, [GFF_RPG], for people with AIM and want to be able to discuss this and other GFF campaigns in a group chat setting. Please post your AIM SNs here or PM me if you want to be invited to it. Or IM me: evilpentane.
|
7 damage is just enough to kill the slinger. i'll post what happens next tomorrow - i have a boatload of writing to do tonight.
|
My AIM is shininnit although I don't have it switched on often.
|
Hawk, I'm not sure if I chose the right type of check to do in my post, hence the (?) after perception. If I understand the procedure correctly, we have to roll a d20 when we use this type of check, so I went ahead and did that. If there is a more appropriate check that I could have chosen, please let me know and I'll use that instead.
|
Sorry about the delays, everyone, school's getting into that time of year where procrastinating is really no longer an option. Plus lack of sleep. Plus i've been getting into Mount and Blade again (bad idea, but.)
|
I had an unexpected and unwelcome interruption occur yesterday, but I should be able to get back into regularly posting.
These lands our party is in, they ARE northern and somewhat wintery, yes? |
While that is the implication of the name, there's not actually any snow around. We'll just say it's summer there and call it good.
|
I only just now get that it was the people in Freeport that had the work lined up for us and not the people in Winterhaven. As if the clue about the cleric girl wasn't enough, here I was thinking that this scholar might be the one looking for the map. Glad I finally caught on to that. :erm:
|
BUMP! No one's done anything for a few days. I don't want to have to break out the yeti clause so soon, but...
|
Didn't want to hog the narrative. :P
|
My intent was the same. We haven't heard from Shorty or Philia since we got to the inn, so I figured it would be good to let them get a say in this.
|
Nobody's going to fault you on that. As somebody already pointed out, to keep the game moving during slow parts somebody has to take charge — and Truckbus is probably the most obvious character to assume the mantle of unofficial leader, anyway.
|
Yeah, you'll generally find that one or two people in the group tend to take charge during the non-fighty-dungeony bits, especially when you're just digging around for info. Sometimes the DM will assume the others are tagging along quietly behind, sometimes they'll leave them where they are staring into space (Normally when there's a fight coming up and it's funnier to have one dude off ahead alone). If you want to encourage the others to chime in, try leading the party off to do something totally ridiculous. Suggest a midnight raid on the keep, all unarmed and armoured for stealth or something of that nature.
|
Either destination's fine by me.
|
I obviously want to go cult-hunting. The dragon-chasing would be nice to do afterwards though.
|
What Stop Sign said, I'm up for either too.
|
Alright, I have questions?
Perception is for what now? I saw I got 20 lmao, but I have no idea what this does. Having a surprise round is due to this? Are our positions predetermined or did you handpick them yourself Hawkeye? Boulders are the same as bushes in terms of +2 moves on it right? I get the ! icons but what's the green cross on truckbus? And what is that frame on Dragonshield on I30? Would it hurt to ask what are these enemies exactly in terms of weapons they're wielding? I figure Dragonshields similar to tank-like baddies. Priests for healing and etc. Skirmishers though? |
Alright, I have answers!
Perception was your response to being ambushed. Thia was the only one who rolled high enough to notice the baddies just before they attacked, but your initiative was low enough that you're the last one to act in the surprise round. It's conditional - this roll won't happen if you aren't being ambushed or something similar. I just sort of threw everyone on the board in a logical-looking setup. Having you guys put yourselves on the board would not only take too long, but also more or less defeat the purpose of a surprise attack. Boulders and bushes have the same effects as last time (which is to say yes) The green cross on Truckbus is a mark - if Truck attacks anyone other than the kobold who marked him (the northernmost dragonshield), he takes a -2 penalty to his attack roll. I realize now i didn't put that in the post - it will be fixed. That frame is me once again forgetting to deselect the token before taking the screenshot. Ignore it, both now and when it inevitably happens again. The dragonshields have swords, and the skirmisher and wyrmpriest have spears. I'm not telling you what the skirmisher does - you'll have to figure that one out on your own. Suffice to say, he's a bad guy, and you should kill him. |
I was planning to attack the dragonshield anyway. :P But I'll take my action after everyone else - looks like I'm dead last on initiative, even after the kobolds.
|
I don't think you can move to where you want to, Rychord - you shift first and slide the enemy after, so you can't switch places with it.
|
Ahh crap. Sorry about that. I guess I'll just stay put then.
|
It's been two days, and while this is usually the time limit for people to take their turns, i never actually said so. Shorty has until about midnight before someone else can take over and make Luciel do silly things. For future reference, about two days will be the limit before i have to start handing out strikes (which i really don't want to do, so please keep up)
|
Decarling open season on Shorty's turn, since she's not doing it. Strike one. :(
|
Dunno why, been having issues with internet at home. Seems to be magically fixed now.
Sorry for holding you guys up. :( |
Am I just misreading things or did Stop Sign skipped DN and my turn?
|
If Hawkeye's running it the same way as pang then anyone can post at any time and then things are sorted out by initiative afterward.
|
Oooh, I didn't realize that. Cool, thanks. Btw I love your photos over at Seris' signature thread, tie-dye shirts ROCK. :D
|
Come on guys, this is getting a touch ridiculous. i understand this is a busy time of year, but a DnD post takes like five or ten minutes. I don't want this thing to go dying off already.
|
Did you send a PM to Dark Nation? Maybe he didn't realize it was his turn...
I'm ready to go at just anytime, I just figured I'd wait for him to make his move first since that's the way the turn order is right now. |
Judging by his journal DN's been sick the last few days, might be best for someone to cover for him temporarily.
|
Rychord, he's just sick right now.
I could only cover for Shorty if needed, but not DN's character. Hopefully someone else can pick up the slack besides me. I can't just hog the story here! D'oh, beaten by a minute. |
Oh, I hadn't checked his journal of late, so I didn't realize he was sick. Sorry DN!
I could cover for his character, but it might be fun to get someone who wanted to play but didn't get a chance to do it. If no one does so by around midnight EST tonight, I'll play both his and my turn then. |
You won't have to worry about covering for me since I have sufficient internet access and I'm free most of the daytime which is evening on the West Coast... that's if my turn comes around before Saturday. =P
|
Hey guys, sorry about not posting sooner. Yeah, I've had a vicious sore throat which has finally subsided, only to be replaced by coughing and a runny nose :(
I'll make a post tonight! :D |
DN, you're going to have to specify what power you're using. I refuse to have to guess.
|
You could probably safely go with Melee basic attacks should nothing specific be stated.
|
true, but that's clearly not his intention - i'm pretty sure a melee basic attack isn't going to do 2d10 damage at level 1. I'm trying to avoid punishing people for accidental mistakes, since these guys are still learning.
|
Sorry! I thought you had to roll for every attack, special or otherwise. Plus I'm a little out of it mentally right now x_x
|
Hey Hawkeye, isn't that Skirmisher DEAD? ;)
|
You mean the Skirmisher Daituk's standing on top of? Yeah, he's pretty dead. None of the other guys are yet, though.
|
I'll be making my post soon, but I want to make sure I get the dice-rolls right and no-one is on AIM atm to ask.
As an alternative, would you (DM or a fellow adventurer) be willing to give me a quick primer on dice rolls? Can't improve without learning the basics after all! |
Unless your looking to do something besides using one of your powers or simply attacking, it's pretty simple really.
When you decide to make an attack, roll a d20 to know if the attack hits. If it hits, roll the damage dice for the attack. In your case, this will usually be 1d10, except for your thundering roar and cacophonous shout, which will use 2d6 and 2d10 respectively. Your energy strobe also requires you to roll 1d6 to determine the damage type. To know if an attack hits, refer to the monster's defenses (AC, Reflex, Will or fortitude) in the post Hawkeye made at the beginning of the encounter. Roll 1d20, and then add your bonuses and compare the total to the monster's defense against that particular attack. If your using the Obsidian portal page Hawk made for your powers, the beginning of the yellow highlight for a given power tells you the bonuses to apply and the monster defense targeted by the attack. If your total is higher than the monster's defense score, you hit. Roll the damage dice (the second part of the yellow highlight), and that gives you the damage. If an attack allows you to hit multiple enemies, repeat this procedure for each one, unless the attack specifies that secondary targets take a fixed amount of damage, for example your stone fist flurry of blows attack. So basically, 1d20 for hit damage dice for damage if the attack hits (if not, you don't need to roll this) Hope this helps! |
Lets say use Crane's wing as an example. In the Yellow it says +4 vs fortitude. So you roll a 20 and add +4 to the result. Then you take that number and compare it to the enemies fortitude defense. If the attack is equal or better then it's a hit and you roll damage.
In this case that would be 1d10+4. And then if the attack hit since you're a monk you can use flurry of blows which is an additional automatic 3 damage to to any adjacent enemy. Since you're a stone fist monk that's 5 damage for the flurry if the target was someone you didn't hit with the actual attack that round. So it would go like this 5+4=9 to hit so compare that against the enemy fortitude. And if that was a hit then it would be 1+4=5 as the damage and then you can flurry at whoever. Do you have what kind of powers are what down yet as far as encounter, at-wills and dailies go? |
The other two look to have this covered in terms of rolling attacks, and Cette touched on this, but you should also be using Stone Fist Flurry of Blows any time you hit an enemy. It's a free action, and lets you dish out an extra 3 damage after your attack to any enemy in melee range (this will be incredibly handy for taking out minions). Every little bit counts, so.
|
And that's where the more tactical side of things comes in. As you know that you can dish out a small amount of damage to anyone extra you're standing next to if you hit your main target, as Hawkeye said you can kill minions as an afterthought if you position yourself so you're standing next to a couple of them or a minion and a "proper" bad guy.
Most attacks do something in addition to just doing some damage and it's these added effects that are the important bit generally when picking what attack you're going to use. Once you've got a handle on what all of your attacks do you can start trying to coordinate effects with your team mates. Like if you have a particularly hard-hitting attack, save it till just after someone uses a power that makes the bad guys easier to hit so you're less likely to miss and waste it. That said, there's a lot to be said for just doing what seems right at the time, or just the plain funniest option. |
One of the terminologies that confused me early on was, what does these 1dwhatever mean. And when do you use what. So let's take a look at good ol' 1d20.
The "20" after "d" means how many possible numbers are on that die. "1" means how many of these 20-sided dice you are supposed to throw. So if you're supposed to roll 1d20, you simply throw a single 20-sided die. Whenever you attack some monster, or whenever Hawkeye tells you to roll a check of any kind, you will use 1d20. It is therefore the most common die roll you will make. There are other dice sizes you may be called on to throw, depending on the situation. These are d4, d6, d8, d10, and d12. When you attack a monster, you make two dice rolls. The first roll is called an attack roll. You will roll a 1d20 against a specified monster defense, applying any bonuses or penalties to it. This roll determines whether you hit or miss. If you hit, you make a second roll called a damage roll. This roll determines the amount of damage you do. Zeno has a power called Energy Strobe, which says: +3 vs Reflex, 1d10+7 damage. This is shorthand for saying, this is an attack against Reflex. It has an attack (or to-hit) bonus of 3, and a damage bonus of 7. You use a 1d10 die to determine damage. So when you attack something with Energy Strobe, you roll a 1d20, then you add your to-hit bonus (3) to that number. You will then add or subtract any situational bonuses or penalties which may apply (more on that if you ask). You compare the total against one of four enemy defenses: Armor Class (AC), Fortitude, Reflex, or Will. In the case of Energy Strobe, it targets Reflex. Assuming your 1d20 resulted in 7, you add 3 to that. Assuming further that there are no extra modifiers, you compare your attack result (10) against the Reflex of your target. If the target's Reflex is 10, you hit. If it is more than 10, you miss. A quick way to determine hit or miss is to subtract your to-hit bonus of 3 from the enemy's will of 10. This means any attack roll that is 7 or higher will hit. There are many ways you can role-play a miss. Maybe the attack simply bounced off your enemy's heavy duty armor (AC). Or maybe he dodged it thanks to his speed (Reflex). Or perhaps he was hit, but was so buffed up that it did no damage (Fortitude). Or maybe your psychic attack could not penetrate its mental defenses (Will). When you hit, you roll for damage. The dice required is specified in the power you are using. In the case of Energy Strobe, you will roll a 1d10, and add your damage bonus (7) to the result. The total amount is the amount of base damage you did. If you roll a 5, then total damage inflicted is 12. It is possible that the enemy is weak to (called vulnerable in official terminology), strong against (resist), or even immune to certain types of damage. If this is the case, the DM will inform you, right after you calculate the damage. There are also certain times when your damage is halved (rounded down). You will also be told if this happens. In 5% of the time (1 out of 20), it is possible to get a "natural 20" from your attack roll. This is called a critical hit (crit for short), and will always hit your enemy (even if it has an absurdly high defense). In general*, if you make a critical hit, there is no need to roll for damage. You simply apply the max damage possible - this includes additional damage rolls for things like sneak attack (rogue), hunter's quarry (ranger), and shrouds (assassin). Some weapons are capable of dealing extra damage on a critical hit. So when you crit with that weapon, you roll for damage (it's not automatically maxed). In the case of Energy Strobe, a crit automatically inflicts 17 damage. Criticals are great, except when the enemy does it to you. There are generally no penalties for rolling a "natural 1", or a critical miss. While there are some exceptions, they are quite rare and you should not worry about it. Your DM will tell you of any penalties before you make that 1d20 roll. There may be other additional rolls you are called on to make, like the Rogue's Sneak Attack and Assassin's Shrouds. For Energy Strobe, you will make a 1d6 roll whenever your attack hits. It determines your attack's damage type, so it may affect your damage. For example, you hit an ice cube monster who has "resist 5 cold and vulnerable 5 fire", and your damage type roll was "1" (cold). Your total damage will be decreased by 5. But if your damage type roll was "2" (fire), then your total damage will be increased by 5. * If the monster's defense is greater than [20 plus your attack roll bonus], you roll for damage as normal. BUT if you are facing such a monster, you better run, or at least have some good final words in mind. |
Alright well I was finally able to post my next attack so hopefully I did things more correctly this time around. I just wish there was a more distinct way to quickly see the enemy monster's stats (AC/Will/Health/etc.,), but I suppose they were already posted and I just missed it somewhere :(
|
Its on page two, typically Hawkeye would post them at the start of the encounter/battle before we all go into attack mode.
And yeah, my attack was a miss. I'd have to get a 18 or better on a hit die (1d20) to be able to hit them. :\ They're not called Dragonshields for nothing. You got him though, great job. And yeah, he doesn't post health (if they're bloodied (less than HALF of their hp) or dead specifically) until the end of the round (before Rychord's turn for instance). |
It's on post #50.
That should be a hit since I believe that one is vs fortitude and he gets a +4 to hit plus his die roll so even against AC he'd end up with a 19 to hit. Unless you're fighting enemies way above your level or your characters really badly built you shouldn't have to roll much higher than a 11 on average to hit most opponents. And those that do have a stupid high defensive stat usually have another one that's quite low to even things out. Probably worth noting that crane's wing also knocks the enemy back 1 square. |
A couple of things -
Philia - You can use a minor action to continue the effects of Shade Form, otherwise they will end. Since you only actually used a Standard that turn, there's no real reason not to do this at this point. DN - I'm going with the assumption that you attacked the nearest enemy using Crane's Wings and then used the movement aspect of the power to jump next to the other one. this is completely unnecessary, and you would normally have had to roll to see how far you go. This is a problem since it could land you anywhere from where you want to go to three or four spaces farther (i think that's how it works anyway). I'll let Zeno do the jump thing this time, but since the baddie you attacked was pushed back you totally just could have walked there. Addendum: Stop Sign - the kobold you're trying to hit isn't at I29 anymore. Zeno's attack knocked it back to H30. |
K I wasn't sure when it says it'll end after the end of your next turn. I figured it'll fade once I do an attack or something. But yeah thanks for reminding me that I could do it after the attack once more.
|
I'm ready to play my turn, but I'm not sure if Stop Sign's turn is done or not, since he doesn't seem to have adjusted for Hawk's remarks in his post. Hawk, should I go ahead and play it anyway, or do you prefer that I wait?
|
If you're attacking the kobold next to you, you can probably go ahead - the other one might die if Truck's attack connects, so if you're intending to finish that one off you may want to wait for the results of whatever he does.
|
Nah, I have other plans. I'll go ahead then.
|
Um Hawkeye, this is gonna sound dumb but why did you move me closer? My weapon/attack had reach across 3 spaces (+1 for proficiency)... only reason why I didn't move in closer was not to receive a counterattack.
|
I don't think proficiencies work like that, but weapon +2 is definitely three, not two. Oops. I'll move Thia back to where she was.
|
Sorry everyone, it's crunch time with all the due dates i've been ignoring coming up on Monday and Tuesday, so i've been trying to undo a couple of months worth of procrastination in the span of less than a week. there is light at the end of the tunnel, but we'll see how things go
That said, Shorty: i'm going to let you change your turn, because as it stands you'd probably take at least three Attacks of Opportunity and that's just not cool. I feel another LEARNING TIME coming on! Attacks of Opportunity (generally referred to as AoO or AO or OA because it takes way to long to type out otherwise) happen when you expose yourself to the enemy in battle. In terms of what actually happens, this usually implies you turning your back or dropping your guard to cast a spell. In practice, there are a couple of things that trigger them. The most common is movement. Any time you leave a square that an enemy can reach, you'll provoke an AoO. This means you can walk up to an enemy without worrying about getting whacked, but if you try to turn and run they're going to get a free shot at you. OAs happen before the movement that triggers them, so if an OA knocks you out, or knocks you prone, or inflicts any other effect that would prevent movement, then you're stuck. The exception to this rule is if you Shift. Shifting is an alternate use of your move action which lets you avoid OAs in exchange for only being able to move one square. If you're wondering why the kobolds have been running circles around you guys, it's because they have a special ability which allows them to shift 1 square for a minor action. You aren't so fortunate. The other trigger for an AO is if you try to use a power with the Ranged or Area keywords. In this case, Luciel's Lance of Faith is a Ranged power, so if she tries to use it from where she is, she's going to be attacked. Close burst and Close blast powers don't draw AOs. That's AOs, in a nutshell. Feel free to change your turn, Shorty, and hopefully i'll have enough free time between now and next Friday to put up the next turn. If you're still having trouble with the dice, see above for like three posts explaining it (none of them mine :)). Also, with Christmas incoming, make sure you let us know if you're going to be away for a while (ex. visiting grandparents who think that the internet is evil). This applies to everyone, not just Shorty. |
uuuugggggghhhh sorry i'm dropping the ball so hard on this everyone, a couple more days and i'll have a life again
might try to move the game forward tomorrow if i can find some free time to myself it has been hard to find of late |
Its okay, Cataclysm just came out so I've been busy with that myself :)
|
The next game post is up. Hopefully people are still paying attention after all this time.
|
I knew I was gonna get AO but it was totally worth it though. :D
|
Well, that brings my count of misreading my powers up one more. Good thing Thia had gone to the exact right place for my misreading to not really matter. :eagletear:
|
You're allowed to misread powers, you guys are still learning. You don't want to know how many mistakes i've made and then mostly covered up. For every one you see, there's probably three or four that i made that didn't involve dice rolling.
|
all right, it's been almost a week now. Strike two, Shorty. One more and we'll have to pull Luciel.
|
All right, I'm going to have to call this one. Sorry Shorty, but that's strike three. Luciel will be written out of the narrative (somehow) after this battle. I have an idea which i might just use now.
Other newbies wanting to jump in should speak up now. Either let me know that you'll set up your own character, or give me an outline so i can make your character for you. Also, i will be away from an internet connection for five days from Sunday until Thursday. So even if we are able to get this battle finished before Sunday (which shouldn't be too hard), i'm not going to continue the game until after i'm back. |
I'm guessing by the lack of any kind of response of late that this game is more dead than i would like to admit. That said, we'll take a break until new years, then see if anyone still wants to play. If not, well, at least we learned that (a) GFF doesn't quite have the interest level to maintain two games at the same time; (b) that i'm a bad DM; or (c) all of the above.
See you all after the holidays. |
I can't speak for everyone, but I'm willing to keep the game going so long as you're willing to keep DM'ing it.
|
I wouldn't call yourself a bad DM yet, during busy parts of the year, the other games have slowed too.
|
I'm still up for it.
|
An update on the game's status -
Turbo and Tritoch both answered with "maybe" when i PMed them about joining the game, and then never got back to me. Skills has been recruited to help you guys along, but i don't want to throw you guys into a fight a man down, especially with the party being as squishy as it is. As soon as Skills has a character figured out, we'll get the ball rolling again. Sorry about all the delays. I'm probably going to be more strict about deadlines so that we don't have this problem as much in the future. |
Because having Skills in the party is a great way to keep them all alive.
|
Alive? Not necessarily. Moving? Yes. Skills isn't the type to kill off his teammates for no reason, but if they're not keeping up or being generally unhelpful, he'll probably let them know sooner than i will, and it will pretty much definitely be funnier.
|
Sounds good. I think Skills being there to assist me with the why-is-this-so-complicated DnD ruleset will help me post more regularly. I imagine its much more intuitive in a person to person (i.e., table) scenario then just purely internet.
|
Alright, sorry for the delay everyone, i wanted to get the game going yesterday, but 5 classes in one day is a little much. The next 10 or so Wednesdays are going to suck.
Also, new for 2011 - Handy power trackers at the bottom of your expanded power sheets to tell you which powers you've used and which ones you still have access to! Hooray! EDIT: also Skills, i can't update your character sheet since you were kind enough to make it yourself, so you'll need to either keep track of your own health totals and items or give me control of it so i can. |
Thanks for keeping this up, Hawkeye! (I don't know how I missed OPTIMUS FUCKING PRIME appearing in our midst, but sure why not)
Are the trees impassable terrain, or difficult terrain? |
the trees can be moved through no problem, though they do provide cover. The squares with the little triangles are rough terrain.
|
So! Now that Truckbus is in the trees like an honest-to-goodness dwarven wood elf, I have a few questions:
1) Has he been seen by the kobolds? Should I roll a stealth check for it? 2) Can Truckbus swing over to AH10, throw Spectral Vines (Melee 2) at the kobold AH12, and string him up like a pinata? :cmb: |
I'm running with the assumption that none of the actions I took on my turn will break my cover. It is my understanding that the Oath of enmity is not an attack and as such shouldn't reveal me. Let me know if I'm off in any of my assumptions and I'll rectify my post accordingly.
|
Uh, yeah, the kobolds can still see you, since the trees don't block line of sight. You might have been able to move forward without them noticing if they hadn't been paying attention, but since they're all focused on the group now, you're not going to go unnoticed.
Truckbus might be hidden by the foliage, but as soon as he tries to do anything he's going to make quite a racket. I'll let you try to swing across, but you'll have to make a DC15 Acrobatics check. That gives you a 10% chance of not falling on your face. Heavily armored dwarves, despite what GFF DnD has told us in the past, are not the nimblest beings in the world. |
Oh that wasn't how I was imagining it at all. I thought that it would have been possible for me to remain hidden since the trees provide cover.
I guess cover does not necessarily equal concealment. I hope you don't mind, but I've rectified my post accordingly. And since I just noticed that knowledge checks don't necessitate an action, and considering the fact that I'm now visible to the kobolds, nothing's stopping me from throwing in an attack for good measure! :D |
Alright DN, strike one. i can't resolve anyone else's actions until you take your turn, because you're first in the initiative order. if you haven't done anything in the next 24 hours or so, Zeno will have to just stand there picking his nose and i'll move the game ahead.
|
NEW RULE
ANYONE WHO DOES NOTHING FOR A ROUND DUE TO INACTIVITY BECOMES A PROJECTILE FOR PRIME'S IMPROVISED RANGE ATTACK. He doesn't take kindly to soldiers not doing their duty. |
My bad, I've been busy with cleaning up around the house, and efforts to reach someone for help with the DnD related stuff have been less then stellar, seems everyone is afk or offline in regards to chatting. For some reason everytime I look at my character's power sheets all thinking flies out the window.
Okay I looked over the rolls about 5 times and I think I did it somewhat right, but let me know and I'll correct it. Goddamm why is this DnD so complicated for me? |
If you need a hand with anything I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that those of us who've been playing for a while would all be happy to help you out, even if we're not involved in your adventure. Drop me a PM next time. :)

You can also PM me or AIM me at evilpentane .
By the way, I think that first Crane's Wings roll should be a d20, not a d10. Attack rolls are usually (always?) d20s. |
Okay, I'll PM / msg you guys if I have future questions :)
Also, the reason I did D10 was because on my powers sheet it has d10 listed as the hit roll. |
no, 1d10 is the damage roll. for the to-hit roll, you roll 1d20. always. add the number i put at the start, in this case +4. if you get any attack modifiers, you'd add those to this number too (ex. +2 for combat advantage). compare the number you get against the type of defense listed, in this case fortitude.
if you hit, you do 1d10 + 4 damage. which means you roll 1d10 and add 4 to the result. if you need more specific instructions, i'll be back after class. also reading some of the player's guide will help to explain things. also, crane's wings isn't a ranged attack. you'd need to use energy strobe to hit him from there, with a -2 penalty for cover. |

|
@DN: I think what got you confused was the fact that the card reads:
Hit: 1d10 + Dexterity modifier damage, and you push the target 1 square. I agree that it can be confusing at first, it should rather read On hit, since that's really what that part of the card means. |
I was wondering how I was going to get Truckbus out of the trees. :tpg:
EDIT: Never mind, should have read more carefully! |
Will be taking my turn tomorrow, sorry boss. Work and all that :(
|
Dude, i was AWOL for 2 or 3 days. I have no right to start harassing people about being slow any amount of time shorter than that. Don't worry about it.
|
Um, I'm immobilized (forgot what save ends meant) but can I still do long range attacks?
|
Quote:
Also, should I completely re-do my post or just let you fix my mistake? |
You can still act and do whatever you want, you just can't move. save ends means at the end of your turn you make a saving throw against the condition - 10 or higher, and you're no longer immobilized. less than 10, and you're still stuck.
EDIT: i fixed the mistake, DN. the thing is you picked a really complex character for your first game - most of your at-will abilies are two abilities rolled into one. Crane's wings, for example, has a movement ability as well as an attack ability. the move ability requires a move action to use, and you'd already used your move action for the turn. |
I have a quick question about my Overwhelming strike:
If I use it against an enemy who promptly dies (like say a minion would on hit), do I still get to shift one space as a consequence of the hit? |
Skills - you can't use that power when you're a truck - you can only use powers with the "beast form" keyword while transformed. in this case you rolled high enough that a melee basic attack would cut it and as such it's no biggie, but just so you know.
Philia - you have to attack the slinger with something to invoke your shrouds. they reveal weak points, they don't actually hurt things on their own. Rychord - yeah, i would think so. |
Quote:
|
Dark Nation, you might want to think about choosing a different target for your attack. I'm pretty sure Skills took out the kobold you just attacked on his turn.
|
That was uh... practice, yeah, let's go with that.
I blame the decepticons for that mix-up, post corrected |
I write the new positions of each player, and the positions of monsters that die that round, on a piece of paper. That way when I look at the map, I have a quick reference as to what's changed since it was made.
|
LOL poor Hawkeye. This is a rare sight to see, a whole team onto the thread within the whole damn hour and a half. :D I'm so proud to have you guys playing with me!
/sap |
what the... dang. i come back and it's my turn already. i was not counting on this...
I'll hopefully get the next game post up tomorrow sometime, otherwise it'll have to wait until thursday. i've got 200 pages to read and write a four or five page report on for wednesday, and i have class all day wednesday. |
No worries about the delay Hawk, school-work is more important, usually.
I have a question though: So in my most recent post, I rolled a 1d20 for my ability (and I assume it is the hit-check, yes?), so how (or where) do I compare what I rolled to what I need to be higher then (So I rolled a 6, plus whatever modifiers) to see if my attack connected? |
In the starting post of each battle, i list the defenses of each type of enemy. What you do is take your number (6) and add the modifier below the power on your power sheet (+3). you compare this with the number of the defense listed below the power (minion reflex = 13). So this would be a miss.
I'll also let you alter your turn since you are drawing two OAs - this post has everything you need to know about that. Zerg's post higher up the same page also explains the attack rules, if you feel like reading a whole bunch. |
Gotcha, okay, post altered and updated.
|
Hawkeye, I think you might have forgotten to factor in my last post when you updated the map / played the minions attacks. I'm still at AJ8, yet I had moved to AI10 and attacked the kobold that was at AI11. Also, I think the minion count is still higher than it should be since Daituk, Thia and Zeno all took out a kobold last turn, yet there are still 6 minions left over rom the 8 that were there before.
Am I missing something? |
yeah, i apparently totally forgot to do your turn. Go from you being where you said you were going, and the kobold i put in that spot as dead, since it makes no difference to the damage it's no biggie. sorry about that. (suggestion - use a different color for your game-related moves: the one you're using now is borderline invisible if i'm not paying really close attention (at least on my screen))
If you can get your post up before too late tonight, i can get the next post in before Thursday. I get a total of about an hour and a half to myself tomorrow between 8:30am and 8:30pm, and most of that time will be spent eating or moving between classes. I will be so happy when this New Music Festival crap is over and done with. EDIT: Skills - Prime’s challenge will die out if you use it when you do, because you don't engage the kobold (either attack it or end your turn next to it). Since this means you can't use it next turn, it might be a better idea to just not use the power. Philia - You can't invoke the shrouds unless you use an attack on the kobold. It could be as simple as throwing a rock or something (improvised ranged weapon), but the shrouds can't do any damage on their own. And i'm still not sure what to do with the trash can you pulled out of nowhere, but i'm pretty sure it's not R2 in disguise. |
Oops, that's what I get for fucking up the difference between Divine Challenge and Divine Sanction.
My bad, negro. Dropping it from my turn would be boss. Thanks. |
All right, I'll play my turn right now, and I'll heed your advice about the color, to prevent further complications and headaches.
Additional Spam: I'm just going to run with the dead kobold being the one who is presently where I moved last turn (AI10), since there is one in the spot I am supposed to be standing and one where I attacked on that same turn. |
Hmm. Any way to ford that river?
|
CAULK THE DWARF AND FLOAT IT ACROSS
|
No time for bearded rafts, humanoid missiles or bust.
|
... well, the kobold just walked across. You're probably taller than he is. Just sayin'.
|
Quote:
Since the battle is winding down, I'm going to wait until everyone ahead of me in the initiative order has taken their turns before I take mine. |
Barring any paralysis incurred by Prime's over-eagerness to use our characters as missile weapons, I could have just walked over to the kobold that's running away to keep him from escaping. I have a high enough speed to get there.
|
Oh. I should know better then. I didn't realize that's what I've done the last two times I invoked them. Shame I couldn't move for the 4 fucking turns though.
|
Screw waiting. Let's get to it, guys, I want this encounter to be over soon. :P
|
@Hawk, I was just wondering if you've decided or not on the effect of the "little boost" Prime gave me. Should I coordinate my action with the fact that I am flying through the air towards the Kobold? Point out my blade and make a melee basic attack roll with a
|
Yeah, it's awesome, but an Athletics check of 16 isn't going to lob a 150 lb. character quite that far. Where's the sense of growth as you level up if you can pull something like that at level 1? You can, however, land at AI13 and book it from there.
Use an Acrobatics check to vault off your hands where you land and jump the remaining distance - you'd only need a |
I'm planning to use Crane's Wings to close the gap between the escaping minion and myself, but I'm not sure on the proper dice rolls for this one, or rather, i'd like to get it right the first time, any assistance one of you could give me on that?
Basically, still unclear about how much action I can do in one turn with some of my abilities :cmb: |
OK the movement technique is essentially something you can either substitute for a normal move or ignore when you use that attack. So you could either jump at him or just walk up there.
You roll a d20 for the attack and add 4 to the result vs his fortitude. Then you roll 1d10+4 for damage if it hits. Plus you can whack him with a flurry of blows for 3 more damage on top of that if you hit. If you use the cranes wings movement technique you'd be rolling a d20 +your athletics score+5 power bonus then dividing the end result by 5 to see how many squares you jump. |
Thanks for that explanation; see I had no idea about that last part, dividing by 5 for jump distance :)
|
@ Hawk: Just a heads up, I've edited my post because I somehow forgot that I was getting a bonus to my attack and thought I had missed the Kobold. I rectified the situation by rolling for damage.
|
Since I've retreated due to the influx of pain and suffering upon my monk physique, are there any particular non-combat actions I could/should take?
|
You can heal up by activating Second Wind, which restores 25% max hp. You all get one Second Wind per encounter; it's a Standard Action for you non-dwarves. Second Wind also temporarily increases all your defenses by 2 until your next turn ends.
Other non-combat maneuvers available to everyone: - Aid Another (Standard; roll 1d20, success = +2 to whoever's being aided, failure = -1. Hawkeye determines number that succeeds.) - Charge (Standard; from 2 squares away, rush right towards the enemy. Attach either a melee basic attack or a bull rush. +1 charge bonus to both attack rolls.) ---- Bull Rush (roll 1d20, your Strength vs. enemy Fortitude, success = push enemy 1 square; shift into vacated space.) - Total Defense (Standard; +2 to all defenses until your next turn ends) Note that if Zeno moves away from Slink without shifting, it gets a free opportunity attack that can very well K.O. him. If Prime didn't kill it, anyway. |
Oh, right. I'd forgotten about the possible OA on Zeno. Let me know if I need to redo my move, because I have occupied the space you had in the prior round.
|
That second wind sounds good right about now; how many spaces may I shift?
|
1 square. Under normal circumstances, you can shift a max of 3 in a round if you use your Standard to shift, and spend an Action point to shift also.
Some races can shift as a minor. Kobolds, for example. Some items also let you shift as a minor action, although you won't have access to them at this point. |
So uh... in terms of downtime besides healing... :goes to check if I need a healing surge: what else possible I can do? I believe that uh some of my stats are too low for certain things. Like perceptive check?
|
Whatever you want* basically. Kill random forest animals? Sure! Loot corpses followed by Kobold clam bake? Why not? Burn down the forest? Go white-water rafting? Get another kobold-head-on-a-stick like Optimus? Doable! :D
* Subject to Hawkeye's approval of course. On a more serious note, Hawkeye probably wants you to explore the caves, but going off the rails is fun too! Your passive perception will always be in effect - unless you are specifically searching for something or a certain location, you don't roll Perception. You can track stuff (i.e. footprints) with Nature or Dungeoneering when in a cave. Use Religion or Arcana to detect magic or anything that reeks of divine power. Thia can probably scout ahead thanks to very high stealth. |
Do we get an action point back for having just done 2 battles in a row without an extended rest (milestone)?
|
why, yes, yes you do (everyone except Prime anyway). I thought it was every three encounters for some silly reason. A word of advice - You guys may want to keep an eye on Zeno, since even if he burns all of his remaining healing surges he won't be getting back to full health. DN, you may want to stand back and spam Energy Strobe until you've taken a nap, since Zeno is such a juicy target. It's hard for me not to attack the party member with the lowest AC, especially when they're standing right there.
|
@Dark Nation: You don't have to give up getting through the waterfall just because you've failed to cross it once. As long as we aren't in an encounter, you can try as many times as you want.

Just so everyone knows, i'm going to Florida for spring break, so i may or may not have internet access depending on travel and whatever. I'm pretty sure the hotel has wifi, but i'll still be away from the computer more than usual.

Question: Is that darkness indicating light from outside the cave, or our field of vision based on position?
|
The latter.
|
DN, the room is lit. There's torches all over the place. Throw an orb or something similarly helpful. On an entirely unrelated note, circumstances surrounding "only one computer on the wifi at a time" mean i can't use my own computer, so any chances i had to move things forward are severely damaged. I might be able to find some time, but it doesn't sound like i'll have a whole lot of down time. We'll play things by ear for now.
|
I see, my mistake then. Okay just to avoid another unnecessary chastising, I DO roll a 1d10 for the damage, right?
|
Specifically for Energy Strobe, 1d6 to determine attack type, then yes, 1d10 for damage.
Do note that you're in a surprise round. 1 action in total only. Can't use Energy Strobe and move away at the same time. You can attack kobold AA25 with a charge+melee basic attack (1d4 damage) if you wish though! Same thing for Rychord, I can imagine. |
I completely forgot about the surprise round rules. I'm redact my post right now.
Additional Spam: Post redacted. I re-rolled in the interest of fairness, but that didn't save the kobolds. |
Quote:
Man I wish there had been a primer on all of this.... umm... can someone just wipe my post completely clean? That's two dice rolls I've fudged now. Then I can just go ahead with what Zerg suggested. This shit is too fucking complicated I swear, getting a headache from trying to not screw up the rules. |
Don't sweat it, this game is the primer. It's easier to pick it up as you go, rather than having to aread a hundred-page document...
Assuming that the black gap in AD23 through AD27 is a hole in the ground and not a wall, there's no need to change your post. You can attack all but kobold AA25 with Energy Strobe from where you are. |
DN, if you have a commute, or even if you spend half an hour a day on chores or cooking, I'd highly recommend listening to a podcast like Critical Hit. I picked a lot of the rules by listening to them - Critical hit, especially, has a total beginner in their group at the beginning of their podcast run, so the rules are explained.
|
Or you could read through the beginnings of the other DnD discussion thread. We were all pretty much novices when the thing started so there's some pretty idiot-proof rules explanation at the start of that.
I still don't really understand a lot of the rules, I just say what I want to do and Pang does all the rulesy stuff and my choice of attacks in fights has as much to do as what would look cool as what is useful. |
Thing about that is you need to read the actual game thread and the discussion thread to get the proper context. You're one of the protagonists, Shin, so context may naturally occur to you. Not so for the others though.
Case in point, I've followed it all the way through, and even then, you can see how laughably naive I was when I temporarily took control of Argumentus during his final battle. (I thought you can healing surge anytime you want, even in combat. I didn't know you have to make an attack roll to determine accuracy.). With that said, I'd propose linking to noteworthy posts that explain things. For example, Pang's treatise on the concept of cover is really really good and deserves more than the three props it got: http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/showpost.php?p=740663 |
Okay, my post was finally fixed, if you were waiting on that, Hawk
|
Waiting is not the term, i didn't access the internet at all for the entire last week. We were a little too busy - a journal entry with pictures will come when i'm not sitting in Pearson International Airport and am actually home. I haven't checked the game thread yet, but i'll let you guys know if there's anything else amiss (though i trust Zerg to know the rules better than i do - i always miss anything that got changed since the first PHB, since that's the one i always check)
|
Sorry again guys, this is getting ridiculous. Just because i'm the GM doesn't mean i get immunity from the three strikes thing (well actually it does, but it doesn't mean you guys can't criticize me for holding up the game like i have been).
I noticed Thia's surprise round move was missing, so i'll give Philia until tomorrow night to put it up. Hopefully my system will stop hating me for not sleeping enough soon so that i can get back to doing homework and trying to murder you guys' alternate personalities. |
Quote:
And by the way, if Truckbus really was my alternate personality, believe me, I'd be the first one to murder myself :tpg: |
Dammit I forgot all about OAs. Well guess I learned my lesson.
|
Nope, you got out of it on account of it wasn't your turn. In the first couple of battles i would have hinted that you might want to change your move, but i'm going to stop doing that for things you guys should have figured out already. Can't leave the training wheels on forever.
That said, Zeno should really try to stay back for this fight. He's the squishiest member of the party, so moving him into the fray is really just asking for trouble. Plus you can't heal anymore as you're out of surges. Just sayin', since as much as i act like i'm trying to kill you guys i'd really rather not have a death so early. I can't not try, though, because that would just be depressing. |
Uh... Not sure how that happened but I'll redo my post then. I know this is probably an obvious question but I'm not taking ANY chances: Can I attack a creature who is a tile up and over (so diagonally) or down and over by 1?
[A][_] [_][B] (so If I'm @ "A", can I attack "B", where [_] is an individual tile?) If I am the squishiest then why are all my attacks except one or two melee? D: |
Because you're a Monk/Sorceror, so you can't wear armor without slowing yourself down / impacting your hit chances. I'm pretty sure you can take a feat to remedy that at some point, or a feat to boost your AC another way. I've never played either a Monk or Sorceror before, so i'm not sure.
Yes - diagonals count for being adjacent. You can also move on a diagonal for one movement. |
Dark Nation, you would probably rather do Fallen Needle instead of a melee basic attack at this point. It preps you for a shift later if needed, too.
|
Well I've already rolled the dice and everything, so I'll do that next round perhaps.
|
Sorry about fuckin' up on that HP count. That's what I get for forgetting to click "save". Derp.
Also how did Zeno miss if like....he critted. I curious. |
Oh right. Oops. sorry, i was in a hurry. (yaaaay 4 damage)
|
Prime killed the kobold, so don't bother with that one any more.
|
What's the minimum roll for an attack to connect?
Assuming my attack did hit, For Energy Strobe do I roll 1d10 or 1d20 for the damage? The powers page is a bit confusing reading over it. |
to be fair, you've got some really confusing powers.
Energy Strobe has +3 vs. Reflex. so your roll (9) + 3 needs to be greater than or equal to the target's reflex defense (14), so that attack's a miss. If you had landed the hit, Energy strobe needs two more rolls - one to determine damage type (roll 1d6, look at the chart on the power card), and one to determine damage (1d10, then add 7). Also, a friendly reminder - if you do hit something in melee, remember to use Stone Fist Flurry of Blows - it's a free action, and an automatic hit for 3 extra damage (or a free minion kill if they're around). It's probably best for you to stay out of the way for now, but it's something to keep in mind. |
Hawk, I'm ready to play my turn but I just need to know if the Yellow skirmisher died from Prime's attack.
|
yeah, he's toast.
sorry about the impropmtu hiatus guys, i got really badly swamped by homework and promptly left all my other obligations to rot in a corner. after next week (choir tour, so the only time i'll have guaranteed internet access is tuesday night when i'm at home) things should get back to normal. I want to thank you for not giving me heck, but i'd rather you give me heck than let the game go through that again. so next time, give me heck. |
All right, i'm going to go out on a limb and call this thing officially dead in the water. I'm sorry everyone, but my life has been really turbulent of late (not in a bad way, but in a i-don't-have-consistent-internet-and-free-time-at-the-same-time way). i haven't had a lot of time to look at GFF, and i have no guarantee of internet in the coming weeks, so.
The original plan was to help some newbies understand 4th edition D&D well enough to play in Pang's games, but as he's planning on changing game systems after this dungeon it's kind of a moot point. I might consider running a game again sometime if people ask for it, but for the time being it's just not working. This could be as early as next fall if i find things stabilizing by then, but for the summer at least i think this game is going to be done. That said, if you guys still really want to play, let me know and i'll keep trying. I just don't know my living arrangements for after this week, so i'm loathe to make promises regarding such things. |
It's fine, Hawk, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's true that D&D 4e isn't particularly well suited for forum play, so hopefully another system will work better.
That said, once I get more experience playing other systems, maybe I'll GM a game of my own. It'll be a while yet, but if I decide to do it, I'll let everyone know. |
Yeah, don't sweat it Hawk! It was fun while it lasted, but don't break your back trying to keep it alive if it is really inconvenient for you, as I've said before, real life trumps silly internet games. :p
If you ever feel like you want to revive it I would be willing to pick it up again when that happens, but if it doesn't happen that's fine too! Hope things settle down for you soon! Additional Spam: Thanks for running this for us, by the way! |
How rude of me. Yes, thank you for running the game :)
|
Thanks for all your efforts, Hawk. Most of my decision to change systems comes from the fact that my own life is getting messier and more complicated; the only reason I could ever run 4E for the forums is an extreme overabundance of free time. I'm sure I still have much more time to burn than you do, but it's becoming a bit of a burden for me as it is — don't beat yourself up.
|
Its okay Hawkeye. If anything, I definitely learned a lot. Thanks. :)
|
Well it was a fun ride while it lasted. I appreciate the learning experience very much, even if as Stop Sign pointed out, its a bit hard for forum post-by-post play.
So yeah, thanks for running the whole thing, perhaps I'll revive my character for another escapade in the future =D |
