VANQUISH - the ultimate air guitar knee slide (or SHIT JUST GOT REAL the vidyagaem)

Platinum Games (of Bayonetta, MadWorld and Infinite Space fame) and director Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Killer7, God Hand, Devil May Cry) bring you the batshit
insane lovechild of Gears of War, God Hand and P.N.03 about Americans fighting armies of Russian assault robots, in the future, IN SPAAAACE

The demo is out on both Xbox Live and PSN and if you haven't tried them yet stop reading right now.

Go play the demo, then come back, unless you've already had the game ordered like me. You could still play the demo. Again.

Or you can watch something like GT's preview of it while you wait.

Or the Sam Gideon trailer with some sweet gameplay footage amidst the silly story bits.

Anyway, I am looking so forward to this. I was really psyched by the time the first gameplay videos were released, but the demo confirms it to be completely, deliriously glorious.

Oh and the cover is lenticular.

We can see Sega is throwing every bell and whistle into making itself look ridiculous, but do go and buy the game when it's out next month.

FatsDomino Sep 2, 2010 11:51 AM

What's going on in this thread? Why did I just get kicked in the face? Why don't I mind that at all?

Taco Sep 2, 2010 12:05 PM

I just played the demo and it was fantastic. I was having a few issues with the camera when the action got hot, especially against the HUGE FUCKING TRANSFORMING, MISSILE SPAMMING BOSS at the end of of it, but nowhere near enough to hinder the enjoyment of the whole thing.

Definitely going to be picking this one up.

No. Hard Pass. Sep 2, 2010 12:28 PM

Played the demo for like, 40 seconds and ordered this.

Wow. Just wow.

Firefly Sep 2, 2010 12:33 PM

Yes, it's lots of fun; just remember to keep moving (cover is destructible) and manage boost energy.

That said, some actual official sources need to be dropped here...

For those interested in such things, Gamestop among other retailers has a preorder bonus consisting of a trio of special weapons (reference):

Shenlon Sep 2, 2010 07:57 PM

First time I played the demo, I just jumped in and died 3 times and took 20 minutes didn't think much of it. Second time through the demo, I played the tutorial, blasted through the story mission in 10 minutes and loved it. The voices are a bit too 90's anime-ish, the camera was annoyingly slow at first but I got used to it. Not sure if I should expect a huge story out of this but the gameplay itself might be worth it.
The shooting is very forgiving even on normal but nothing wrong with that. Only thing that might be the biggest problem is that every action relies on the suits power level, which makes sense I guess but even a melee attack can deplete your entire health bar and be an instant death if you use it improperly.
There aren't any games coming out this fall/winter so I may pick this up since it does have sega's "awesome" style as they did with bayonetta"

SailorDaravon Sep 2, 2010 08:51 PM

Played the demo and rather enjoyed it. The only thing that really bugged me was damage taken seemed kinda arbitrary when fighting the boss. He killed me 3 times in one hit when I had full health, and all 3 times I have literally no idea why I died. But then there would be times where I would take a big missile or laser directly to the face and it would fuck me up, but I'd be fine. Not sure if I was just missing something or what, but it was really annoying.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 2, 2010 11:07 PM

First form has a top mounted cannon that shoots fast enough that you don't really have much of a chance to dodge it unless you're already moving. It has a really obvious charge animation glow though, and it's strong enough to throw you straight into emergency AR if you're at full health, so being beaten up a bit will have it kill you quick.

ALso your health is directly related to how much suit juice you got left so.

Ah, I bet that's what I was missing.

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 3, 2010 10:11 AM

Definitely looking forward to picking up Vanquish.

I died twice during the demo, but both times happened at the very beginning. That aerial fire comes down and sends a car or something flying, and it's instant death if it touches you. I didn't get a good look at what happened the first time, and the second time I was standing right next to it when it got hit. I found it odd how ineffective the giant spider robot was compared to a stray car. The boss didn't even seem to target me as I walked around by its feet, slowly kicking open weapon crates for ammo. It didn't care about my squad either, who all huddled up in the same corner with their backs turned to the boss.

That said, I only had two issues with the demo. First, the punching. Enemies would go down with a single punch, yet he insisted on finishing the combo and sending the suit into recharge mode. Second, recharge mode takes way too long. Hopefully there are upgrades that lessen it a bit, or at least make your suit last longer before having to recharge.

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 3, 2010 11:07 AM

Oh god I just realized Sam is voiced by Gideon Emery YES YES

Dobby Sep 3, 2010 12:25 PM

There's a god damn button for Sam to take a smoke break.

Nuff said.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Sep 5, 2010 10:09 PM

Fa-huuuuck yes, I can't wait for this game. Demo was great, AI was meh, smoking was hilarious, and boss was appropriate in difficulty. Easy-- but it's an early stage.

OmagnusPrime Sep 11, 2010 12:36 PM

Still haven't gotten around to playing the demo yet (am going to try and correct that soon), but got this pre-ordered. In fact, thanks to Skills's heads up I've got some awesome looking UK exclusive ordered (woop).

Definitely looking forward to this a lot.

Paco Sep 13, 2010 09:31 PM

Three things happened when I got home from work today.
  1. The demo got played
  2. A load exploded in my pants along with the massive explosion of the first boss
  3. Game was pre-ordered

I played it on both Casual, which was supposed to have auto-aim (queue "VERY EASY" jokes at this point) and Normal. I found that it was actually harder to beat that fucking boss with auto-aimvon than without it. It's like the auto-aim wants to aim to the main weak points when you should be juking out its joints first.

Anyway, I was blown away; literally. Can't wait until this comes out next month!

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 13, 2010 09:39 PM

Did you play casual FIRST?

Because honestly if you're going to review this thing I swear to God you better actually play it instead of automating half of it.

Paco Sep 13, 2010 09:41 PM

I did because I thought it was gonna be easier but, man, it's just so much easier when YOU'RE the one aiming the goddamn gun where you want the shots to go.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 13, 2010 09:46 PM

So you just assumed you were too incapable and retarded? Not a bad stance to take but

At this point it's safe to say Mikami is trolling people who are too dumb to properly play the vidya. And yet they lavish him anyway despite only playing half the game. I find this hilarious but appropriate.

Single Elbow Sep 13, 2010 09:56 PM

Seems like my journal message did not get across.

What a pity.

"I played the game on what I assumed would be an easy difficulty setting." The part that is INSIDE the quotations is the part I'm submitting as my answer to question Y. I'm not sure how you canucks translate the language but I'm fairly certain that's pretty self-explanatory.

That's a lot of words to say "yes".

Firefly Sep 21, 2010 08:13 AM

And lo...

...the speed runs have already started. For example, I recently had this playthrough brought to my attention... 4:46 elapsed, 19500 points accrued.

Single Elbow Sep 22, 2010 04:57 AM

It's just the demo. I'll wait until it hits retail then I shall await these runs with gusto.

I had mine preordered already. Impressed in every aspect of the demo.

And yes, I played on normal.

New trailer, extra hype

nuttyturnip Oct 17, 2010 05:56 PM

Early reviews are saying the main game is only 4-6 hours long. As awesome as the game is shaping up to be, I'm wondering if it's worth $60. Even with a $20 coupon from Kmart this week, I'm still considering waiting for a price drop. After all, Fallout and Kirby come out this week too.

Ramenbetsu Oct 17, 2010 11:09 PM

Bayonetta dropped to like 40 dollars within 2-3 weeks at target. If you're skeptical, just wait a month. I doubt this will perform better than Bayonetta.

I wonder if you use the same concept of value for every other score based game you've bought or played.

Out of curiosity, are shmups inherently not worth much money because most of them can be credit fed and beaten in 30 minutes?

Do you really think the point or design philosophy of this title is to play it only once through? Seriously now, nutty.

OmagnusPrime Oct 18, 2010 01:04 AM

Because who would want a 4-6 hour awesome experience when they can have a 10-15 hour average one.

Oh, and that nonsense completely ignores that it might not be that long, only if you're rushing through it trying to get a review done. It also ignores, as Skills points out, that this probably isn't going to be a one playthrough kind of game (see Bayonetta).

Sometimes people make my brain fucking hurt.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Oct 18, 2010 02:08 AM

Alright, alright, relax. I can kind of see nutty's point. If it's not something he wants to play through again, he basically spent $10-15 per hour of gameplay. It would be kind of rough for someone like me, who earns much less than that at his job.

But I also think back to Gear of War 2, where its campaign was... probably 6-8 hours long, and I was begging for it to wrap up by the time I neared the end. I am unaffected by this short playtime "revelation."

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 18, 2010 09:10 AM

My point in it's entirety is that just using one playthrough's hour count is, in many cases, not the best measure of length or value. It's a number entirely focused on too much by idiot manchildren in the press who play specifically so they can get get up paragraphs on the subject.

How "long" is Bayonetta? I imagine most people went through that more than once. How "long" is Warhawk or BF2, entirely MP affairs? Ikaruga? Harvest Moon? VVVVVV? Machinarium? Any racing game with a career mode in it? It's a stupid thing to base anything on because it means NOTHING in a lot of cases. When does something become "OK" to only play for 3 hours? When it's 10 or 15 dollars on XBLA? 5 on Steam? 20 in the bargain bin?

A better way of describing something would be to discuss something like inherent value that someone is likely to get out of a title. But that's a significantly harder thing to convey, and when you've got awful writers and their awful editors pandering to a group of readers with a collective two digit IQ, this sort of shit isn't bothered with.

nutty is smarter than that and I'm pretty sure most everyone else on this site is too.

nuttyturnip Oct 18, 2010 10:50 AM

It's not fair to use MP games when you're talking length. I never said I wasn't going to buy it, but with two other excellent games coming out this week, I have to take playtime into account. If I'm going to spend most of my time playing Fallout, then why not wait a few weeks for the price to drop? I'm not one to replay games (Kirby, Fallout 3, and FFT are about it), so paying $60 for a few hours isn't very cost effective.

Then again, I do want to play it, and I'd pay the same if I went to a hockey game or some other live event, so I might pick it up tomorrow.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 18, 2010 11:00 AM

Why not think it instead as "with many good games coming, I should start with Vanquish since it's only ____ hours long, so I can then move to New Vegas"

For me, the whole length thing is a moot point. If I want to play or own something, I will buy it. I never look at movie lengths when deciding what movie to buy, unless I am trying to avoid watching a 5 hour film when I feel like seeing a 2 hour one. Hardly any game these days actually feels too short, usually you're more likely to feel some game is far too long, or ends right when it should.

I think it's fair to mention the apparent value for money you are getting with some game when discussing it in a review, but letting the game's price affect the score is unforgivable (see the whining reviews for Limbo or ODST's campaign). By that logic most magazines and websites would need to update the game's score each time the game's price goes down, because you're suddenly getting more value for money, which by their logic makes it a "better" game.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 18, 2010 01:41 PM

Maybe things are different Stateside but over here I'd be amazed if this was still more than £20 in a month's time.

I'm like Qwarky, if I like something I'll buy it but then with less time for gaming these days and with a monster backlog, I think the only thing I bought day one all year was Reach and even that was selling for less than the £50 rrp (I got it for £40 odd I think). Games drop in price really quickly over here these days so you can pick things up pretty cheap if you're patient. For example, FFXIII is now only £15 on Amazon and I'll probably buy it when it hits a tenner.

No. Hard Pass. Oct 18, 2010 01:49 PM

Waste of a tenner.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 18, 2010 01:49 PM

None of these outlooks are wrong, judging value for yourself is basically how you become a good consumer.

I'm just saying one shouldn't necessarily base it on an otherwise mostly misleading and useless statistic.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 18, 2010 01:52 PM

It can't be that bad surely?

I tend to see value in terms of hours in the pub. In the pub on a good night you'll probably spend about a tenner an hour. If something gives me more entertainment value per hour than that I call it good value, so if FFXIII entertains me for more than an hour it's not a waste of money.

When I get games like Sacred that last me 150 hours for only £20 then that's incredible value for money. :)

No. Hard Pass. Oct 18, 2010 01:58 PM

It is that bad. And worse.

You want an hour of amusement? You won't get it. And arguably--and by arguably I mean mo0 thinks the last few hours are good, but they aren't. They're just less restrictive and still awful--if you do get to the three hours of good part, you have to play through 40 hours of crap to get there.

In fact, it will give you negative return for money. In that you'll drop the tenner, and then have to drop another 40 on booze each time you fire up the game to get drunk enough to stomach the damn thing.

You're better off paying someone ten bucks to stomp on your nuts for a few hours.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 19, 2010 04:37 PM

I might swerve it then. You can get Dragon Age for the same price, is that any good?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 19, 2010 04:52 PM

PC or bust with Dragon Age.

SO ANYWAY.

Who bought this today? Anyone have a chance to try it yet?

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Oct 19, 2010 07:12 PM

I got it. So, so much sex. Still in Act 1 (just passed Scene 3 from the demo), so I don't have much else to say quite yet.

The preorder weapons are pretty meh, with the exception of the laser. I haven't picked one up yet, but supposedly it uses the ARS' stamina in place of regular ammo.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 20, 2010 04:43 PM

Jesus Christ, the fierceness of my erection when playing this game is off the scale.

FUCK YEAH KICK A JACKASS FROM A SLIDE AND SLOW MO IN THE AIR AND SNIPE A DUDE OFF A TURRET

People who dislike this are officially mentally handicapped.

Dobby Oct 21, 2010 03:36 AM

My mind has been blown for the 4 hours 53 minutes I have put into this game thus far. I can't wait to see how much punishment I'll be given when I try hard mode after this is over.

Seeing Sam slide, kicking a robot to infinity while getting enough jump to do a slow-mo snipe is so sexy.

Rocket Launcher uppercut is probably the best thing in a video game this year. It never fails to make me burst out laughing.

4-2 on Hard, before I stopped to study. Where's everyone else at? My 3-7 score on Hard is currently #4 on the leaderboard. No idea how long that is going to last, though.

Cannot agree enough. Even though you'd described it to me, I still wasn't prepared for the awesomeness that was that uppercut. God damn this game is ace (and since I've only just started this evening I'm up to 2-1 on my Normal run).

Not only do I have two brand new assholes, they have both been freshly violated to boot. :(

Is Vanquish a four-hour game? - Page 1 | DigitalFoundry | Eurogamer.net

A very good article on why GI is wrong. It explains a lot of what people seem to be on the fence about, and I think it's worthy of a read to get a better idea of what this game actually IS.

Plus it talks about that 4 hour thing from a direct and practical standpoint at the end, so.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Oct 25, 2010 06:05 PM

This is a game that makes Achievements feel so rewarding. Many of them aren't difficult, but it makes you seriously fucking pleased to make one pop for pulling off some seriously cool shit. The short time is also bullshit-- I'm still only in Act 2 and I've probably put about four or five hours in (retries for better scores or to keep upgrades).

Best game I've played this year.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 25, 2010 06:35 PM

Challenges 1, 2, and 3 are now cleared. I can get to 4-5 no problem, but the combination of Two Gun Romanovs, one flamethrower Romanov, several ninjas and a Crystal whatshisface in a narrow corridor with little effective cover makes it VERY EASY TO DIE IN ABOUT TEN SECONDS.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Nov 1, 2010 03:26 PM

C4-5 fell after I learned the optimal pattern. All of Challenge 5 fell in one go on my first attempt. Much easier than C4.

Officially getting my shit pushed in by Challenge 6, though. First wave is Crystal Cockbag and 50 trillion Gorgies and I simply can't move fast enough. Will have to rethink my approach.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Nov 2, 2010 05:22 PM

Super fuck. Approach rethought, worked for most of it.

Can hit 6-5, then proceed to get raped. Got sloppy after replaying since there's a fairly specific pattern you need to follow going into several waves, most specifically 1 into 2, 2 into 3, and 3 into 4.

5 can be some bullshit, though. Just need to find the optimum boss strategy. :(
