ERRYDAY MINECRAFT
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...pboard03-2.png
aka GET OUT OF MY DIG YOU DARN ANIMALS - the game
I figure it's high time I make a thread. Minecraft is a sandbox game by a swedish guy by the name of Markus Persson, aka Notch. It mixes building, exploration, resource gathering and survival in a randomly generated world where anything can be dug, destroyed and rebuilt. Collect wood, build a house, craft tools, mine rock and ore, craft better tools, defend your house from nightly mobs, build a giant castle out of glass. And sheep. The game is currently work in progress, and if you buy it now, you can play the in-development alpha that's updated about weekly with new features. There's a few different gamemodes. Creative mode gives you unlimited blocks with no health bar or mobs and is basically just a level editor where people can create all the 2D sprites they desire. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...___1_by_No.png http://i43.tinypic.com/2hs3fj7.jpg This mode is available to play for free as it hasn't been update for a long time and Notch didn't feel like removing it since it was so popular. You can play it online as well. Indev is a kind of survival mode where you create a world and need to gather material for crafting items and tools. You have a healthbar, there's a day and night cycle, and enemies that spawn during the night or in dark caves. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...F/lolwut-4.png http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...lipboard04.png http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...lipboard05.png Infdev is the same as Indev, but with an infinite map that can go on forever. It also lacks theme options for creating a new world, but it is the most advanced mode with the most features and materials, as Indev has not been updated for a long time. Notch is planning on combining the two, so I assume sooner or later you will have the world generation options from Indev in Infdev. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...pboard02-1.png
Notch is working on Infdev multiplayer, and is planning on a few other gamemodes like Zombie horde where a group defends against waves of enemies, and Dungeons and Levers where you can't build or dig, and the idea if to play through dungeons created by others, complete with traps and monsters etc. People are building some hilarious structures and bases in the game itself, but also making custom textures and player skins as well. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...GFF/myface.png I made my current one~ http://www.minecraft.net/skin/skin.jsp?user=Qwarky http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...rkyGFF/ico.png Some links: Main site: Minecraft Notch's blog: The Word of Notch Official forums: Minecraft Forum - Official Minecraft Forums Series of let's plays of MC to give you an idea of what it's usually like

Oh man. That cart video is the BEST EVER.
Q got me into buying this and I definitely regret it so much since. I CANNOT STOP PLAYING IT. Its that awesome. Even when you do finally mine that diamond, you STILL want to explore everywhere. You'd become mad at finding more just because you definitely could! If you liked Miner Dig Deep from XNA, you can find some serious love in this one too. Protip, shovels are great for dirt/gravel/sand. Sand/gravel will sink. Start with these in EVERY MINE, so you could definitely open up new areas in the mine and definitely find minerals beyond the dirt/gravel. Its also cost efficient too. I always go and hack away trees first til I have all 64 bits of them. Then I start my trek down the mines. I'd create 64 planks. Then create 64 sticks from it. Then create 64 torches from it. (Of course mining coal first.) Then I was set to stay down there lol til I die. Typically from lava. :\ |
Love the comic.
We should see if we can't get a multiplayer creative mode running sometime. Anyone can play that, all you need is an email address. Do any of those who currently own the game have a good enough computer to run a server? I doubt it would take too much, but i don't trust my lappy not to cause major issues if i tried it. |
Stuff you care about once you've bough the game:

OK TIME FOR SCIENCE
The physics on the server work really weird, but I've got bridge building sussed out. Behold: http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge01.png This is the treshold of a bridge, you can see where the blocks start falling. The structure below the top one makes no difference, I wanted to check if something like that would somehow support it further, but it doesn't. Any blocks added to the side actually shorten how long it can be without support. So if I added one block to the side, the bridge would be one block shorter in length where the blocks start falling. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge02.png So you put a support all the way to the ground. Now you can continue it to http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge03.png this spot, again the blocks start falling. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge04.png Add another support, this is how far it goes. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge05.png Now, the weird thing about the physics is that even though you need support to build that far, you can remove the support afterward. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge06.png Like so. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge07.png And now this one. But you need to remove the supports in this order. If you remove this one first, then the one further, the bridge collapses. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge08.png Fuck yeah. Now the bridge holds walking and jumping on, but it will act like hovering sand and gravel in Alpha, as in if you attach anything or remove anything near it (without support right under it), it will collapse. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge09.png Like this. http://www.gamingforce.org/staff/Qwa...d/bridge10.png |
I'll see if I can remove the Opencraft gravity tweaks.
By the way, this is running on the GFF server, not my computer, if anyone's wondering :tpg: |
Blah, this is a great use of the server. But which one? .org or .com?
http://www.thegond.com/gff/rp/minecr...evenbigger.jpg Also I've made some great ruins covered in trees in the corner. It is the entrance to some very fine stairs that go all the way to the bottom of world. =) |

But yeah. I also helped Zip create that underground aquarium. :D It was fine at first til I accidentally hit one of the blocks and filled the room with water. Then I had an idea of filling the room with blocks to "flush" the water out and trapping it from underneath that Zip had the idea of. Then we just topped it with a flower in it. Its just beautiful! Be sure to check it out. The red house is the well, and when you get down to the bottom, check the pink entrance to see this room and of course be CAREFUL not to break it! |
Just made things a little more reflective of reality.

Yeah seriously, I stumbled upon that by way of my ruin stairs and holy shit I about pissed myself.
|
Curiously, I probably spent more time trying to figure out the curvature of the arches and maintaining symmetry than on any other individual part of the cavern.
Btw, there's a stairwell to the top of the ruins tucked away in a corner. Also, there's a somewhat scenic one-way entrance to the pit by Shin's castle. Its framed with rock. I plan on adding a bunch more to the ruins when I find the time. Unfortunately, many of these sorts of geological features are impossible with gravity off. |
What the fuck is going on here.
|
If you guys want, I can add gravity back to earth blocks.
Edit: aaaand they're back in. |

EDIT: Holy god that shaft. People need to log on just to jump down it. Play some dramatic ambient music while you explore. |
I think we should build a wicker man next.
That cave is ridiculous as are CHz's tunnels. I improved the 9/11 tribute a bit too. |
So, has anyone else discovered the chat commands yet? You can get a list of them by typing "/help" (without quotes) and hitting return. Pretty much all of them are admin-only or something so they don't work, but here are the ones you can use:
/help: Show all of the commands. Including the ones you can't use! /tp name: Teleport to name's location. Sneak up behind someone, drop some blocks, and warp back somewhere else before they see you! /spawn: Respawn at the world's spawn location, like you just logged on. Good if you want to get back to the surface while having a saved location underground, or if you're trapped somewhere and didn't save a location. /roll XdYY: Roll X YY-sided dice. "/roll 2d6" will print "4, 2" or something along those lines to your console, for example. (WHY DO WE NEED THIS) /me action: Perform an IRC-style action. So "/me is lost beyond all belief." will send "* CHz is lost beyond all belief." to everyone. /ping: Ping the server. It'll just send "Pong" back, it won't tell you how long it took. Useful! |
I still dont understand how that pit was created?
also fuck you who keeps destroying my shit. |

SECRET FRIDAY UPDATE 6
A USE FOR MILK INCLUDED |
Shamelessly linking a rollercoaster minecraft world I made some weeks back. Apparently the megaupload link I had in my journal was broken and I couldn't be arsed to check (nor did anyone comment about it) derp.
Still I think any mc owner should see this just for the short kicks: minecraft_boo.rar |
Although my pc renders java way too slowly to play minecraft at all, I can play it reasonably comfortably on my laptop. So, I've been dicking about with Blah's server.
I made a dwarf, and nearby somebody else made a tomb for me (thanks!) But in the true spirit of Dorfdom, I decided to make an overly ambitious and not-at-all safe megaproject. I'm going to build some glass structures underwater. It's not done yet, but here are some screenshots. View as you enter:
View of the stairs on the outside, along with some scaffolding:
A different view of the stairs. White & leaf blocks are scaffolding, dirt is just dirt I haven't cleared away yet:
Right now I'm just trying to dig way a big enough room in order to have some cool shit in here. Originally I was going to have a pyramid, but now I think I'm going to do a different structure in order to accommodate the size of the room. Digging away all this dirt takes a lot of time, christ. What's planned are several structures, tunnels, and paths to get in both the glass structures (while dry) and the outer room (which will be flooded), mosaics/sprites on the walls, and maybe some little caves or something I don't know. Also looking at the screenshots, I might carve away a bunch of those rocky bits near the stairs. The rest of the room will be relatively flat and therefore the rocky bits will look out of place. |
This week was not a good week for Minecraft. After dying twice in caves, losing 10 diamonds' worth of tools in the process, I decided to screw caves for a while and work on one of the projects I'd been bouncing around in my head.
6 hours and a dozen falls to my death later, and what do I have to show for it? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...iousladder.png A ladder on the way to my backyard. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...lasstunnel.png The ladder is encased in glass on all sides. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...r/th_entry.png And it opens up into a glass tube floating in midair. Turn left, and you see a half finished portion. I'm currently messing with water physics to see if I can make a flume ride. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...h_turnleft.png In the meantime, I made an observation deck to look at the bitchin' cliff my house is across from. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...vationdeck.png Turn right from the entrance and you wind through a path that takes you through the other of two holes that this cliff has in it, all the way around the cliff... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09..._turnright.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...ightcorner.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...onghallway.png and ending with a diving board. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...ivingboard.png It's very high up. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09.../th_thedrp.png GERONIMOOOOO http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...r/th_aaaah.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...aaaaaaaaah.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...aaaaaaaaah.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09.../th_splash.png The only downside at this point is there's no quick way to get back up there. I'm trying to do as little damage to the outer facade of the cliff as possible, so I need to find a way to hide a cave that gets you back to that ladder. Anyway, this is what it looks like from in the backyard and in the preview tool: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09..._frombelow.pnghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...our/th_map.png I hope this bit of GENTLEMEN BEHOLD meets with approval. :) |

Oh hay so what's this Minecraft game
Spoiler:
|
So I started playing single player alpha this weekend. I decided to stream after watching two hours of Tylor. Term and Juanzen were the only ones watching but I had fun despite that.
I saved the broadcast. Feel free to watch. I'm not exactly the best host but it'll give you a vague idea of what the game is like. LET'S PLAY MINECRAFT |
So Acer hosted a private server for multiplayer Alpha and it's pretty sweet. Lag was minimal, some disappearing blocks every now and then and you might "blink" back to a previous spot when trying to jump over a higher block, but otherwise ran smoothly when Boo and I were playing.
Multiplayer is missing day/night cycle and both hostile and friendly mobs, so it's pretty quiet without constant baas. Furnace doesn't work, so no smelting, but you get iron with /iron boo taught me. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...rkyGFF/MP1.png Still work to do, but this WILL be awesome. Private server with GFF buddies, minan, buildan, exploran will be wonderful. I will gladly stay away from public servers, apparently they are filled with lag and lots of griefing :( |
Notch released survivor multiplayer today so I figured I'd open up a few ports and try it out. I invited Qwarky and Boo in to test it out. Q was at work at the time so Boo got first dibs and holy shit a couple hours later I came back to check it out. Qwarky and/or Boo my hat is off to you. Amazing stuff, guys.
I took some screenshots of it with Mo0. Spoiler:
Additional Spam: lol look at me post without reading the thread. Q and Boo you guys are awesome. <3 |
I did all those :smug:
q arrived once I had most of that done, he helped a bit towards the end :3-4 blocks: Well I just wanted to dig that mountain side smooth, but then I had bags full of dirt and stone, and since storage don't work yet, I had to build something, thus~ :U It's really just a hc creative mode atm, the real fun will start when notch gets storage and furnace fixed and adds nights and mobs. |
MO0 CHANGE YOUR SKIN GOD DAMNIT
|
Just for kicks here's a server log. I've removed IPs and stuff.
Basically the server is just a window with a text log that you can interact with through command line and a list of players currently online. It's not really much beyond that. http://www.thegond.com/gff/rp/minecraftservergui.png dat server log:
|
Ahaha, I love how it's boo and Acer talking, then some server commands listed and suddenly finnish for two hours.
|
Mysterious finn-runes. Great conspiracy! IHMETYS
I managed to build all that crap because I've played quite a bit lately, testing how to build stuff and managing time and tools well. 2/3 of the time I swing a pickaxe (it's pretty boring with big projects like this). True survival will be intense as fuck. |
Yay, glad to see progress on the multiplayer survival front. Can't wait for a proper version.
Also, I made myself a skin |
Unless dropped items eventually disappear I think I have a way around the whole chests not working and losing your items after disconnecting from multiplayer problem. Just build a big hole in the ground and then drag and drop all your shit from your inventory and put it in the hole. If you don't want people to steal it then close the hole up. I tested this and it seems to work. Watch me log in later and boo and mo0 have raided my stash.
Nice skin, Ani. Is that supposed to be any character (or robot) in particular? |
A Tau, maybe?
|
Nope, just a construction/excavation themed robot I made up as I went along.
Unfortunately I found out he looks really stupid in armor, specifically the helmet (he can't see out of it). |
Ani is making this giant towering snake arch thing. Intimidating as all hell as the mineshaft I was building came up directly below it's huge shadow.
http://www.thegond.com/gff/rp/minecr...garchsnake.png |
Ok, I finished it up. It now makes a complete arch across a little bay.
I took out my dirt "scaffolding" and put in ladders, so it's not quite so death defying to try and traverse it. I also covered it in torches just in case an update with day/night cycles comes soon. Here's hoping. Edit: Also, I made a really stupid looking ramp thing up to the floating diamond of dirt. Don't worry, it's temporary. I just want to see if I can get grass to spread all the way up there. |
I have a secret project going on in Acer's server, one that I doubt anyone can find unless they spot a certain "hint" while in there. Posting later screens of it, once I can be arsed to mine a billion more stones for it.. |
|||||
Guess what time it is?
That's right, image spam time! My latest alpha single player project (Acer's multiplayer server has some other weird shit, like Castle Creeper), anywayz pics below: Spoiler:
Place took me like a week to build, some materials were harder to reach than others. Still satisfying. (Oh and I managed to burn that roof once, DON'T PLAY WITH LAVA KIDS!) |
Right by the spawn point on Acer's server, behind the N compass letter, used to be this cute little valley.
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/minecraft/holycrap/1.jpg For some reason I decided to fill it with a thousand blocks of TNT. Spoiler:
|
|
As silly as it sounds, I really look forward to you guys posting about this game. I've still written off PC gaming as a whole but man, this is the game I wanted more than anything when I was 11.
|
I think what Devo's trying to say is:
Screw the "PC gaming is dead" crowd and get your ass into Minecraft. Shits free. |
Quote:
The client however costs around 10 euros, or 13 whatever bucks to you across the puddle. Relatively cheap price for a game you will get every future update for (as it is still technically in alpha) and how much time you can spend in it. Quote:
|
I've finally gotten around to playing a little more, finally found some diamond :D Solo Minecraft is ok, but i think i'll probably have more fun with it once i can get on to a few multiplayer games next week some time.

ATTENTION
Please wait until it is clear that Minecraft is good to update. The servers are bogged down from everyone scrambling to get the update and an influx of new players because of that Penny Arcade comic. ALSO MORE IMPORTANTLY the new update includes a fabulous GRAY SCREEN OF DEATH. Just wait it out until things are good. You can follow the news by visiting Notch's blog and twitter or visiting the Minecraft forums. The Word of Notch Markus Persson (xnotch) on Twitter Index page - Minecraft Forum - Official Minecraft Forums In the meantime I give you this~
Additional Spam: GOOD NEWS! Notch has fixed the gray screen of death. Delete your current minecraft.exe launcher and download the new one from minecraft.net (which has been reduced to a very basic website to offset bandwidth issues) or you might face update issues. Also for those that don't want to pay for Minecraft but would really like to try it out Notch has made it free for this weekend as a result of all this trouble. |

Acer pointed me to the recent Notch blog entry that highlighted this fantastic fan trailer a user had made for the game on youtube. I already put it in the OP, but it's worth reposting here for the all-encompassing awesome.

Also, big update coming around Halloween. http://www.minecraft.net/boo/ Scary new monsters, fish, torches that run out (rumor is current torches will be changed into lanterns which don't run out), a hell zone for transporting across long distances, biomes, and more! Watch as notch just adds pumpkin helmets and says he's too busy to complete it all. |
I've been running a minecraft SMP server for a few friends for the past month or so and we've built some pretty cool things, I've gone and made a map of it..
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6498/world3x.th.jpg If anyone would like to see it in person (in game) just PM me and i'll give you the info :D :P Thoughts would be good to hear. As for the Halloween update.. Thats a whole lot of work for Notch to do in a month and if it goes through it'll be the biggest update in minecraft history. Looking forward to it. |
I heard that the geezer who made this is currently earning around $350,000 a day and a lot of other developers are realising that this kind of game might be the way forward. Not sure how true it is but rumours like this are generally based on something.
|
Yeah I think that number's a bit inflated but at $10/pop and 300,000 or so copies actually paid for he's doing pretty well for himself. I'm not sure Notch's decision to turn the whole thing into some massive venture is the best decision though, as well-loved as Minecraft is could there possibly be that much of an untapped market left for it? It's a great little thing but I don't think it's something that could ever really see "mainstream" success. No amount of patches is going to change the fact that Minecraft really has no endgame and there's no compelling goal underlying all the dig dig get diamond.
|
I think Notch probably will finish Minecraft one day with only small updates every now and then valve style afterward and then make another game. That's probably one reason why he's set up a company.
|
So I bought the game a few days ago and the one thing that sticks out most for me is the random level generation. It is very clever and makes some interesting things happen. I thought the first world I started in was pretty. I spawned basically between a beach next to an almost flat ocean (it seems more like a very large bay) and a mountain, on the other side of which is a pair of pretty waterfalls and some large arching caverns. Very cool.
Then I start a second world and I get this: Spoiler:
I also hate skeletons. They're pretty scary if you find them underground. |
|
Did he fuck with the monster spawn rate in the newest update or what
I started a new world and so far every time I've emerged after sunrise I've been beset by 5+ creepers |

A panorama of a district of a large city me and my pals on our server have been working on:
http://i56.tinypic.com/2ltovpt.jpg The entire city looks like this from above: Spoiler:
|
Update from the Notchblog: Minecraft will move to beta on December 20, at which point the price will go up. So, if you haven't bought it by now, but have been thinking about it, now's a pretty good time to take the plunge!
(Then again, I'm sure every single person on GFF has already bought it. So tell your friends!) Quote:
|
Are any of you guys still playing Minecraft? I was pretty busy with various things when it was popular at first and I guess I'm kinda tempted to buy it now after looking through all this stuff again.
Also, I like the concept that you can pay to get into the beta and then you won't get the full game when it's released. |
I still run a server and I still play online every now and then.
I hope notch gets SMP up to date with single player features so that he can work on getting more cool stuff into the game. |
I play Minecraft, but I only really like the survival mode. Since the health and inventory are currently bork in multiplayer, I only play singleplayer. When these things get implemented in multiplayer, I could host my own server or join one of yours.
Here's my skin page FWIW. |
Health works in multiplayer. Inventory works in multiplayer (well if you don't count the chest exploit).

Joined and have been testing this SMP server since yesterday. Really nice folks there, but the lag is pretty crippling at times (maybe the server is on the other side of the globe) and they turned mobs on today, making the server mad hardcore with invincible and sometimes invisible mobs due to lag.
My grand project idea is also pretty much dust now that I can't even build without freaks buttraping me at every corner.. But still recommended once they get the lag issues cleared. |
Yeah, the other administrator turned mobs off. The server just isn't ready for it at the moment.
|
I might check out Project Genesis later on. Seems like there's some wicked structures there. Cool.
For now, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this game, so I'm sticking to friend communities. Also, in the past month, my roommates have started their own SMP server, so that occupies me most of the time I want to play Minecraft. I'll also hop into Acer's server again at some point to check out things there. =} |
This is why I love minecraft, too bad I never have the patiance to build anything like this

Well if you haven't seen it via notch's tumblr account or uh kotaku I guess then here ya go:
also here is some music

I've been a daily builder on PiccoloNamek's server for a month now. With lag issues resolved, lives as blockmen are good!
Gigantic map, tons of stuff to see everywhere, build your kingdom in the wilderness (I did), good people, good times. Server: 67.160.164.109:50500 |
Oh yeah, if anyone on this forum cares about the music from video games, C418 just published the Minecraft soundtrack digitally on Bandcamp: Minecraft - Volume Alpha | C418.

|
Do you guys allow minecarts yet? I really don't get how you guys get around on that huge map. Good lord is it huge.
|
Yes, we now allow full use of mine carts, and we have Minecart Mania installed to allow specialized blocks to act as boosters, launchers, and ejectors. There are also sign commands and station functions for mine carts included in the plugin.
We'd love to have you on Acer. Boo-Kun and scotty are on all the time, you should join in the fun! :D |
I've been on Project Genesis for a little while now. The map is massive, tons of inspiration to pull from. I was getting pretty bored of the game until I decided to join.
This is the entrance to my current project: http://i.imgur.com/vv8dgl.png It's just a small room that drops down to my underground fortress. |

Sass just bought Minecraft, and we're wondering if there's a vanilla server we could play on. I was hoping making a LAN would be a little more intuitive but it's not. Monsters are OK.
|
I am sorry our server was too laggy/whatever it was for you. Setting up a local server is extremely easy though, I am sure I could help you with that.
All you have to do is download Minecraft_server.exe, run it, and then connect to "localhost" (or even your computer's name) and that's really it. That's the simplest possible MC server setup. A computer other than yours can either connect to your computer's name or its internal IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.2). Project Genesis can get a little laggy if there is a lot of people on at a particular time. We'd be please if you'd give it one more try some time. :) |
Well Sass is in tutorial mode right now, so having her start out in a completely developed server without any concept of what she was doing probably wasn't the best idea. Multiplayer survival mode would be the easiest way for her to learn once she gets the basics down, and then she'll be good to do whatever creative shit she wants.
We'll definitely come back once we get to that point though! |

I am happy to announce that Project Genesis now has iConomy! Our first iConomy plugin is "Sign Trader". You can use a chest and some signs to make fully functional buying and selling shops!
|
Anyone happen to know how my server got posted on 4chan? My server got wrecked. I made a backup thankfully but still.
|
It's always good to have constant backups running. I have 10 hours worth of backups at 30-minute increments. Plus WorldGuard, Anti-Grief, etc.
|
Just curious which backup plugin do you use? I have since implemented a white list that has taken care of the problem but it would be nice to have backups too. Like I said earlier I just happened to be looking at my server when I noticed unknown players wandering about and decided I should do a quick copy/paste of the server. Had I not been there the server would have been trashed to high hell.
|
I use an admin tool called "McMyAdmin". One of the best things I ever did for our server. You can set up a schedule to do things like automatic saving, auto-backup, auto-restart, server notices, etc. It also monitors the state of the server and will automatically restart if it stops responding or encounters a "[SEVERE]" error. A truly useful tool.
I also recommend installing either Permissions or GroupManager, along with either Anti-Build or Anti-Grief. Using this combination, you can create a guest group and set their build rights to "false". You can even make it so that they will be completely unable to interact with anything, period. Another useful plugin is WorldGuard. This will prevent things like TNT damage, fire spread, lava fire spread, and even the spread of lava itself. You can also blacklist certain items like lava buckets, TNT blocks, etc. And of course, there is also Big Brother, which creates a MySQL database logging every action taken by every player. With a single command, you can easily undo hours of griefing in an instant. |
I'm gonna look into McMyAdmin. I'm currently just using a simple GUI called Crafty which doesn't do too much but has worked well enough so far.
I only just learned last night why Permissions wasn't working. Essential's GroupManager was also installed. Apparently if you have both installed shit just doesn't work that calls for Permissions. Removed GroupManager and problem solved. I think BigBrother looks neat but I'm a bit loath to install MySQL for a server this small. At the same time I don't exactly like pruning months of old backup files. I did that when I used MCAdmin (which had a backup feature) until I found craftbukkit which is sooooo much better it's not even funny. Only thing I never got around to when I switched was setting up a backup solution. I'm a bit wary of banning tnt and fire and such. I like to think that I can trust my friends and people on GFF not to wreck the place when they visit. TNT can be very useful when tunneling and fire is good in certain situations. The only thing I have set is that creepers don't cause structural damage as its damn annoying cleaning up after them. Their explosions still hurt. Creepers are kind of bullshit on SMP anyway since you have to go directly after them very quickly with two sword swings or they'll explode in your face. I suppose I could use world protect or something to disallow creeper explosions in certain areas but I'm very lazy and don't really feel like laying down protection areas. |
Oh hey, so I paid for Minecraft but when I tried to connect to the pgenesis thing it told me it was an outdated server or something?
Edit: Loving the singleplayer though, I've got a pretty epic Moria mine thing building up. |
Quote:
so either you wait until pgenesis updates to 1.4 or you could downgrade your client by downloading this 1.3 bin folder and copying it over your .minecraft/bin, then with the new minecraft.exe you choose from options not to update now. |
Yeah, we use a ton of plugins for Craftbukkit, and unfortunately, all of the most important and essential ones either haven't updated yet, or have been completely abandoned by their authors.
This is a very common occurrence, unfortunately. I am looking for alternatives and replacements at the moment. |
I don't know how advanced you've made your server but I'm running craftbukkit 617 which supports version 1.4 and while a few plugins are a bit iffy most of it seems to work. The stable build or rather recommended build right now is 616 which if you use the automatic updater in McMyAdmin will probably put you on. I discovered this while mucking around with it and suddenly one of my dumb plugins that requires 617 stopped working.
This is where I normally go to get various builds, however it appears to be down at least on my end: http://ci.bukkit.org/job/dev-CraftBukkit/ It's only 10 dollars but I'm unsure of McMyAdmin. I don't really like that it limits you to only 8 players on non-pay but its understandable. I'm also unsure of how it handles backups. The very shitty MCAdmin had a backup solution that would pile as many as you like until you run out of harddrive space (which I almost did a couple times) while McMyAdmin limits you to 7 or something. I'm not sure what that's about. I might try my hand at a backup plugin instead. I do enjoy McMyAdmins web administration though. I only wish they would allow you to minimize the program to your system tray or something. It's not a big deal but it would make the ordeal more seamless. So I do thank you for the recommendation. I'll have to test some more. |
You can have as many backups as you want with McMyAdmin. Just change the setting in the config file. Personally, I have 20 backups. The oldest backup is deleted when the newest one is made, so it only uses a set amount of HD space once the maximum number of backups is reached.
Also, I did finally manage to upgrade to 1.4. The only thing that was holding me back was Big Brother, and they finally released a version stable enough to use. And of course I know where to find the best plugins and CB builds. It's my job to know. ;) |
Yeah I kind of figured you did. In any case, I looked into the issue of not being able to access that site and it is down right now. I'm glad you managed to upgrade to 1.4 compatibility without much issue. Big Brother is just too much of a hassle for a small server like mine but I can see how you really can't do without it with such a huge server. It wouldn't be wise to have to rely on backups all the time when your backups are probably huuuge. How often do you do your backups anyway? Like four times a day?
Nice catch on the backup limit in the config file. I kind of like that it does so many backup and then starts over-writing. I did start running out of space last time I did backups so I guess I might give this another go. |
I have McMyAdmin set to backup the whole map once every half hour, always. With a maximum of 20 backups, that is 10 hours worth of backups. Each backup is about 2.3GB, but I have an almost completely unused 1TB hard disk drive in my PC, so the space taken up by the backups is a non-issue.
Since I run my server off of a RAM disk, restoring backups is also a non-issue. It takes less than a minute to shut down the server, delete the current world, restore a backup, and bring the server back online. |
|

Have they finally released a good 1.5 craftbukkit then? I really hope notch gets his shit together with the mod api soon. Perhaps having that source out there will end up helping server projects like craftbukkit in the end.
|
Heh, I highly doubt Notch's API would be even half as good or full-featured as Bukkit's, honestly.
And yes, there is a recommended build out for 1.5. Just have to wait until all of the plugins are either updated or verified as still functioning. |
Yeah just updated my server. Things are working well for the most part.
Word of advice. Disable the fucking weather. Snow and rain are a combined package so you cannot tell it to not snow and still have rain. The main thing is that notch is a fucking moron and forgot to make it so snow that gathers on the ground from weather can melt. If it snows and starts piling on the ground you will have to clear it manually. I'm glad I made a backup before I started mucking around with weather plugins just to see how they worked or I would have had to do that. [MECH] NoWeather v1.1 - disable weather/thunder globally [733] | Bukkit Forums And if you want to screw around with weather or summon lightning try these: [ADMN] MotherNature v1.2 - Control the weather, Umbrellas, Timed weather [711] | Bukkit Forums [FUN] WeatherControl v1.0.0 - Advanced WeatherControl at your fingertips [733] | Bukkit Forums Oh and this plugin is a must. It makes it so lightning strikes do not cause fire to spread. Tested it on my highly combustible pixel art. [MECH] PlgColdLightning v1.0 - lightning does not cause fires [733] | Bukkit Forums |
I just finished updating to 1.5 and already have a weather control plugin installed. But thank you for your concern. :)
Also, WorldGuard already protects me from all possible fire spread, so no need for a separate plugin to perform the same function. :D |
That's cool. Are you disabling weather though? The snowfall not melting is a real deal breaker for me. Also which weather plugin are you using?
|
Actually, I ended up reverting to my previous 1.4 setup. Even though everything technically worked perfectly, the server was beset by mysterious and unbearable lag, and apparently I am not the only one, as there are threads all over the Minecraft forums and Bukkit forums about it. Yay Notch!
|
Good news, we finally found a stable 1.5 setup, and have managed to use the Nethrar plugin to enable nether for our server. We also upgraded our CPU to a Core i7-990x 6-core. Performance is better than ever and the fun continues to increase!
|
Do your nether gates actually work like single player nether gates or does any nether gate lead to the same nether spawn like most basic nether support offers? I've avoided nether due to this problem.
I wonder how notch's SMP nether stuff will be. Probably will cause like 20 more bugs. |
It works exactly like single player nether, only without the loading time. Each gate has its own sister gate in the nether and the distance compression applies as well.
|
Started playing Minecraft last night. Holy the things you guys built in this thread are amazing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ek/Spawn01.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ek/Spawn02.png This project started as a simple compass with a rules board, but over time I kept adding more and more to it until it grew into what we see here today. A beautiful and shining example of an epic spawn area. |
Well Piccolo's Project Genesis map is restarting on the 20th, so he gave people the option to hax blocks to finish projects. I decided to make a large underground base dubbed the "Haxhole" deep under my town of shops (Shop Town)
Here is the courtyard/ entrance: http://i.imgur.com/aXbYjl.jpg Also my vault filled with dooped goods: http://i.imgur.com/HhkOpl.jpg It is protected by a large diamond door using the elevator mod. Been a while. Well turns out we may be getting 1.7 sooner than expected. Pistons and bug fixes. Yup. Adventure Mode or whatever it is will be in 1.8 instead cuz you know vacations and supposed fleshing out and stuff. Whatevs here have this silly video.

Project Genesis is still going strong. We have an awesome new map with huge, deep oceans, beautiful, expansive continents, with several cities and many large-scale projects already in development. Here are some screenshots of what's going on right now:
City of Oceanside by me: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...-27_104048.jpg Cathedral by scotty: http://i.imgur.com/KOT2X.jpg Among many other things. In addition to our awesome main map, we also have working nether and working skylands, all connected together using The Voxel Box's awesome VoxelPort system. |
I really should get to playing this more often. I do need to find my mouse though because playing this with a laptop track pad is painful as fuck.
|
Adding onto Piccolo's post, Project Genesis is still running on 1.6.6. You will need to downgrade to log in until all the plug-ins update. I think we are waiting on just one more plug-in. Anyways, more screenshots:

I may come visit you guys once you upgrade to 1.7.2. I only really explore but I do admire the work people do. =)
My server is much simpler and is running 1.7.2 just fine. The upgrade was much less painful this time around than with 1.6. |
Well, we're updated to 1.7.2 now, so feel free to come in any time. :D

I am pleased to announce that our server now has its own dynmap!
http://pgenesis.com:8123/ Updated in real-time with current constructions and players online. Check it out, and come visit us sometime! :) |
i recently swished up my crummy little server's dynmap with a nicer palette, proper lighting and the nether, it's wicked fancy. about time they added coloured wool support too.
http://minecraft.vgchat.com:8123/ Also pistons are pretty much the greatest thing ever. Here's a stupid but hilarious chomping head thing I made. the obsidian and iron structure on the left is a safe; I'm in the middle of rigging up a piston-based combination lock for it. http://i.imgur.com/FVNool.png and here's a thing i started working on with my girlfriend this morning. if you can figure out what it is you may already be a winner. or a loser. whatever http://i.imgur.com/6a8jRl.jpg |
If I may ask, how did you get the shadows working? I am positive I have my settings correct, but it just isn't happening.
|
dynmap can be weird sometimes, but yeah for the past couple versions they've had wool color and they also fixed the cardinal direction when switching from flat to the uh 3d diagonal map
oh they also fixed it from crashing your client when doing a fullrender recently too i never did get around to fooling with the palette and shading though - i'd love to know more as well |
here's what the relevant bit of my dynmap config looks like:
Code:
maps:also golly gee piccolo your spawn area is something else. wish my server was active enough to warrant something of that scale, bleh |
Ah, that was it. Forgot to uncomment the line. My map now has shadows and a day/night cycle. :D

They've been livestreaming via a cellphone at the Mojang booth at PAX off and on.
There's a 50 minute recording of it available that shows off most of the new features: dashing, new lighting, new combat, pulling on bow strings, enderman, rivers, oceans, better biomes in general, generated npc villages (actual npcs yet to come), and other fun stuff like the booth itself and the people there. http://www.justin.tv/fdoke/b/293539704?
