The FIFA World Cup 2010 is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa (which is a country in the south of Africa!:tpg:)

There are a lot of interesting teams, like NZ, Slovakia (you know that one from Hostel) and North Korea (lol). It will be very fun.

I guess we had kind of a bet game 4 years ago so there will be one this year as well. Stay tuned for more info (and post here if you're interested in participating, I guess).

Woohoo, not loing now and luckily all the decent English players got booted out of the Champions League already so they won't be so tired. See, it was all part of the plan all along.

Worryingly, more and more England players seem to be picking up knocks as our season winds down, if Rooney's not playing we're fucked.

As always, I'm going to put money on Germany to win. Not because I want them to or even particularly think they will but because on English betting sites, the odds are always artificially low on England and high on Germany and there's always a semi-decent chance they'll win it. 15-1 currently on Betfair, worth a fiver I reckon.

Betting on the combined shirt numbers of all the goal scorers in a given match is always fun, although spread over a whole tournament it'd be pure luck, plus a bit of a mission to add up.

I reckon Ronaldo for top scorer, Greece for most sendings off, Portugal for most goals, Ivory Coast to let in the most goals and, er, that Swiss guy who hates England as the ref in the final.

I am interested in participating, I can't take part of an actual betting pool even if I'd like, so I guess it'd have to be like last time for me, just sticking to bragging rights, on the top scorer topic, I'd say that'd go to Spain or Brazil, most sendings off I'd say north korea, I can't say who will let in the most goals.

Well, Africa's chances of winning the World Cup has diminished by two star players (Michael Essien, Ghana; Didier Drogba, Ivory Coast) in as many weeks. Ivory Coast was a dark horse to win before Drogba's injury; now they'll be lucky to advance out of the group stage.

No chance can be diminished by as many players as you want and it's still no chance. Even though there's a lot of African players playing in France and England these days, there's simply not enough who regularly play together to form a cohesive team. In the England team there's a load of players who regularly play together, same with Portugal, Spain, Brazil and Italy so it's much easier for them to get together and play as a team for their country.

It'll be a European team that wins it this year for certain. The only question is which one.

Brazil won't win this year. The older players are too old and the younger players have all been off form lately. Argentina are the only non-Eiropean side in with a shot as I see it and even then only if a couple of their players really turn up.

I honestly doubt that Mexico will win against Urugay. Those Urugayos cover their field like a smog blanket over their rotting cities and, truth be told, Mexico got MAD lucky with Chicharo NOT being offsides during that first goal.

I HOPE they win but, really, it's just wishful thinking from this point on. :(

Mexico played really well but they do lack any sort of finishing skill which might hamper them somewhat. The guy who just signed for Man Utd looked promising though.

I watched the highlights of the Argentina match and they looked like they were taking the piss. Far more impressive than Brazil, even if that Brazil dude meant that shot rather than fluking a cross and so far only Germany have looked close to being that standard.

So Germany and Argentina impressing in the early stages of a World Cup, that hardly ever happens. :rolleyes:

Interesting stuff seems to be going on these days.

I'm somehow looking forward to the next matches.. especially matches of USA and Switzerland. Even though I'm not going to watch it live - The end results are sufficient.

I also think that this thread is best viewed like this.

It's looking increasingly like there's going to be some less highly rated teams in the knockout stages. All the "Favourites" have been a bit shit so far, although I suspect come the next round, a lot of players will up their games.

Based on form so far, Argentina look favourites although you can never write off the Germans and I suspect once the Spanish, Portugese and Dutch start really trying they'll put up a decent challenge.

Sadly, it looks as though it's curtains for England. We'll probably scramble a shitty win and go through then get out-classed in the next round. The simple fact is, although there are regularly two or more English teams in the last four of the Champion's League, they're teams full of foreigners. The current England team mainly play for Spurs and our keeper from the first match was from West Ham of all places. The best England teams of recent years have been those primarily made up of Man Utd and Arsenal players, back when the Neville brothers, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and so on all played together every week and knew each other's styles. Plus at present they're all playing out of position and WHY THE FUCK IS HESKEY STILL IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD WHEN WE COULD HAVE TAKEN BOBBY ZAMORA?

Man, even for France, this is still kind of a dick move. Seriously? Why don't they just pack their shit and go home? Portugal, Brazil and Argentina are looking like the teams to beat now, if only because they've all started to relax, which is when really good players are at their best. The reason England are playing so shit is because they're scared of losing, even against shitty teams like Algeria and the US.

I haven't watched one match in this tournament so far on account of bad possibility, but maybe it's my luck, because it really seems this world cup is not so hot (but I watched all highlights). Second round was predictably better, because the teams were force to lay off their hesitation.

So apparently ESPN's football analysts are already wetting themselves at the prospect of the US being in the semi-final, assuming the US beats Ghana (which is no guarantee) and the winner of Uruguay-South Korea (which is safer than Ghana, IMO). Considering the US has played two decent but separate halves (first half against England, second half against Slovenia) and barely won this game, I'm not willing to give Ghana the shrug-off yet.

I am excited to see how the other four groups go. I'd like to see fewer matches where both teams advance regardless of winning or losing, though. (So I'll get my wish tomorrow with Japan-Denmark. :tpg:)
