Villains in RPGs, that you just couldn't wait to put in their place.
It happens all the time in RPGs. There is always a villain, that you are just dying to fight in battle so you can put him/her in their place once and for all.
What is the one villain that you wanted to get your hands on more than anybody? For me, it has to be Sephiroth: Spoiler:
|
I wanted revenge on Golbez on FF4.
I forgave and forgot later when it was known that Zemus was the real final enemy. |
I kind of wanted to kill Luca Blight. He pretty much just killed whoever he wanted and was a dick.
Also it was fun finally fucking his ass up, one of the best battles ever. |
Definetely Albedo. He became my biggest motivation to finish Xenosaga Episode I (and II). Anyone causing harm to children is bad enough, but what HE did was far worse. And any attempts to add sympathy for him in EPII didn't work for me whatsoever. The asshole had it coming, and I hope to get a second chance to give him his comupance in EPIII.
And of course Kefka from FFVI. The bastard pretty much laughs in your face throughout the game while not getting any punishment in return. It felt like a cheat after you beat him. No final death wail or anything. :edgartpg: Also, I think this topic might be better in General Gaming, since I can recall a few non-RPG villains who deserved equal contempt (MGS3's Volgin. I cheered out loud when he finally got what was coming to him). |
Albedo is bad, but I'm not even that motivated to kill him. I like him as a villain, but the things he did aren't even that bad.
|
Definitely Algus, from Final Fantasy Tactics. No villain ever deserved what they got more than he did.
|
I'll second Algus. Snobbery (especially considering Delita spent much of his time HELPING him) + murder = die fucker. They probably should've let him go and made him more of a recurring character in FFT...Wailing on him was the most satisfying moment of that game.
But the Suikoden series probably featured the best villains I couldn't wait to see die. The flowery guy from Suikoden 1 and, of course, Luca Blight from Suikoden 2 were at the head of their class. And yeah...Sephiroth, just because it was nice to FINALLY get to fight the guy at the end (as compared to the chit-chat sessions leading up to the climax). Too bad he was such a wimp... |
I'll third Algus, though at least in his case you get to exact revenge immediately after he performs his heinous act.
Another bastard who I couldn't wait to get revenge on was Krelian (Xenogears). This guy pretty much screws every single living being in the planet, and constantly toys with you as he continues to succeed in his goals. The worst thing is you never really get a chance to get even with him, as in the last second of the game he reaches an epithamy and begs forgiveness. And stupidly, the characters grant it. At least you got even with Shakahn, who also acted like an untouchable slimeball most of the game. Plus, the dialogue from Bart after beating him gave you the feeling that he really enjoyed getting his revenge (and deservedly so). |
The dialog between Algus and Miluda is great. Algus says it's the will of heaven that commoners should be born animals to be used by nobles. Miluda says that God would never say such a thing and Algus responds: "Animals have no god!".
The thing with Krelian is that his intentions were more misguided than evil. He just wanted to unite humanity with God in order to prevent the kind of senseless tragedy that struck Sophia (and the suffering that resulted from it). He didn't believe that human beings could ever truly solve their own problems without help. The problem is that he commited many horrific acts in pursuit of this goal. He definitely got off too easy though. I think Miang was probably more hateful. Especially with how she manipulates Ramsus and then dumps him. That part was just plain mean. She also enjoyed teasing Grahf. Plus Miang is the queen of kills in 'gears by far. (indirectly) Shakahn was an ass through and through the same as Stein (Bishop Stone). Another ass was Rhade from Ogre Battle 64. No redeeming qualities. |
The thing is Miang wasn't really human to begin with. In the end she was merely an extension of her own creator (Deus). Krelian on the other hand was born a human, and made his own decision to forsake (save?) humanity.

I don't think i ever really felt that way towards a videogame villian. Though oddly, Sandra the Jewel Theif from Legends of Mana just popped into my head but I'm sure i never really wanted to put her in her place.
Double Post: Oh I just thought of 1, though I can't remember his name. In Tales of Destiny one of your party members betrays you and you then have to fight him later in the game. I was angry that I spent time leveling him up only to lose him.....bastard. |
I was pretty motivated to slaughter Dhoulmagus from Dragon Quest 8.

Both Luc (Suikoden III) and Saleh (Tales of Rebirth) are up there for guys I couldn't wait to smack around.
Most people who've played Suikoden III know why I would hate Luc-- he's pretentious, arrogant, and corny at many points. What makes it worse is that... Spoiler:
Most people haven't played Tales of Rebirth, but I promise you that Saleh and the rest of King's Shield are very annoying. Saleh himself isn't a unique antagonist; he's got the same traits I listed for Luc, but two things make him so annoying-- he always underestimates Veigue (the hero), and whe he gets beaten because of it, he comes back to fight again without realizing that flaw. It bugs the crap out of me that he remains so persitent without understanding his own stupidity for thinking Veigue is so foolish and inept. |
Immediately Chrono Trigger's villians come to mind. Zeal, and especially Dalton. God, they were both gigantic morons who deserved to be slapped behind the ear a few times.
Unfortunately Flonne and Jennifer in Disgaea aren't villians, otherwise I'd love to slice them up as well. They just do not shut up. |
Obviously Luca Blight was such a huge jerk about things, killing "pigs" left and right, and being really loud and crazy about it all, so who didn't enjoy beating the hell out of him in one of the most awesome boss fighting sequences around? I know I loved it.
Sticking with the Suikoworld, Neclord is in the same class as Luca. What the hell Neclord, quit screwing around with villagers, geez. Every time I turn around the bastard is getting in my way. At least I get a good sword out of the deal though. And of course Albedo is just so annoying that you wish he would either die for good or just shut his mouth. Yes, we get it, you're insane. You want the Y data or whatever. Just shut up man and stop being so loud about it. And also, I didn't really have a problem with Flonne and Jennifer, but I like where you're going with that one. I would have loved to have given a serious beatdown to Wakka from FFX. "But the teachings, THE TEACHINGS" Yes, we get it, all of this goes against your precious teachings. Either shut your face and deal with it or I will shut your face for you. By jamming one of Lulu's cactuar dolls down your throat. |
I second Dalton from Chrono Trigger. Though he did give wings to the Epoch, but other than that I saw him as an annoying, cocky pest that I was glad to be rid of.
|
Ramirez from Skies of Arcadia. His theme music was cool enough and appearance neat enough to warrant anticipating a difficult battle. And just like most RPG's, that showdown was a letdown.
|
Seymour from FFX. I mean it's like: "Frick, die already you J-E-N-O-V-A wannabe! Get over it, you're dead." I can't believe it took Yuna the whole game to send him off!
I also wanted Sin to die badly, causing the world grief like that and deluding the world with the endless cycle matter. Actually I wanted the thing inside Sin to die even worse. (No! My precious aeons :() |
I wanted Palmer to die from FFVII!
~Don't forget about the space program! |
Luca/Rugal Blight from Suikoden II. Most evil fucking badguy ever thought up. In all my years of gaming, I have yet to see a more twisted bastard. The battle to kill him was badass. And I particularly loved the cinematic duel at the end. Hero fighting Luca one-on-one. And Luca with a dozen arrows stabbed into his backside xD Badass, I tell you.
|
I'd have to say that the one I wanted to get rid of the most was Seymour from FFX. I mean, seriously-- DIE ALREADY! I eventually got tired of having to fight him over and over and over and over. He was also a bit psychotic as well, which irritated me even further.
Give up. Yuna hates you. Spira hates what you're doing. You fail. :p A close second would have to be Albedo from Xenosaga I. His crazed, creepy, and disturbing personality really unnerved me. |
All this Luca Blight talk makes me wish I played Suikoden II. I'm still hoping for a US port of the PSP version (shut up Casaubon). I hear the PS1 version had a very shitty translation.
On the subject of FFVII, I could name plenty of asswipes who had it coming, besides Sephiroth. Number one on the list was Hojo. When you think about it, all the misery surrounding Cloud, the other characters, and even the whole world is purely his doing. He sacrificed his own wife and child in the pursuit of science, and created the monster Sephiroth by doing so. Heck, even after making Sephiroth he still manages to screw with Cloud's life. If he didn't experiment on Cloud after the Nibelheim incident, he probably would have enjoyed a quiet life with Tifa shortly after beating Seph. Sephiroth gets all the attention, but Hojo was the real monster here. I also nominate Scarlett, who was basically a bitch the entire game, laughing it up while performing her heinous acts (like burning Barret's village and taking his hand). She also got very despicable (and a bit creepy) with her sadistic infatuation with trying to kill Tifa later in the game. I don't know what beef she had, but Scarlett wanted that girl DEAD. :edgartpg: |
EDIT: Goddammit, that's not what "port" means.

It's precisely because Krelian was shown to be human rather than a monster that it wouldn't have felt right killing him. At least not for me. Quote:

Who do I think is the most twisted? Kefka Palazzo, of course. He wanted to destroy hope itself. |
Obviously Luca Blight. The dude just needed to be bitch-slapped. Kefka I wanted to put down for all the bullshit he pulled. I mean, he actually succeeded in frying the world and remaking it into his own image. Sephiroth because I happen to LIKE Aerith. Ghaleon in Lunar, only because the bitch stole my girl and turned her into a evil slut who liked to hump his leg. Pope Zeras in Grandia 2...only because I hate evil popes in video games.

Is he the main bad guy in Suikoden II by the way? In any case, I hope FFXII has a bunch of villains like Algus and Luca. Enough with the superpowerful overlords, I want some despicable humans to hate again. Quote:

Megavolt, don't you think "destroying hope" is a bit much as well?

note: no, it wasn't one of THOSE fanfics. It was a standard one that only implied the scenario to invoke drama. I always considered how that might have happened. That, coupled with what he did to Billy's mother, made Stone my number 2 most hated XG villain after Krelian. Quote:

Heh, sounds just like FFT, with the humans putting up more of a fight than any of the monsters.
What I'm real curious is what the main characters say in retaliation to Luca. Part of the fun when getting back at a villain is watching the dialogue of your character when he's getting sweet revenge (Delita vs Algus for example). Did Luca screw over any of the main leads, and do they exclaim their anger toward him? The battle of words is just as entertaining as the battle of blades. |

You know who really bugged me in Suikoden II? Leon Silverberg. The guy is a total arrogant prick. I wanted to get at him more than I did Luca. He was so damn pompous and condescending. Especially in his conversation with Shu near the end of the game. |
Well, in Suikoden II, Luca had fun killing women and children himself. In one of the first scenes with him, after they burn down a village, he tells some woman who's begging for her life to crawl around and oink like a pig. She starts doing it then laughs at her and says "die, pig!" and hacks her down.
As for the final battle against Luca?... Battle Info:

The Luca battle scene is the coolest one I've seen in an RPG:

Integrity? I don't see it. Leon was totally ruthless. |
Oh ya I was just reminded of Seifer from FF VIII. He was so annoying being Ultimecia's bitch. He's also arrogant especially when crucifying Squall in the prison. Lots of fun to tell him lies about what SeeD is and get electrocuted.
Lynx from Chrono Cross, most obviously because of the famous halfway point of the game where: Spoiler:

1. He assumed Mathiu still hated him for planning the Kalekka massacre. 2. He himself was a bit angry that Mathiu became a strategist again even after he swore it off. 3. He was still somewhat troubled by his own plan, which is why he continued to live with the survivors for a while. He eventually catched wind that the war was almost over, and told McDohl to say hello to Mathiu. He then joins when he receives a letter. Mathiu says he wanted Leon's help for the siege of Gregminster, and siege warfare is bloody. Quote:
That's why I say he has integrity. |
I'm going to explain things in the simplest way I can, and if you still don't understand, then it's not my problem:
Leon's unfeeling approach to things is exactly what is wrong with people like him and why people gravitate to people like Riou who aren't jaded and haven't lost their sense of self. Riou might be naive, innocent, whatever you want to call it, but he never sacrifices his basic humanity for the sake of "doing whatever it takes". That's what makes him a true hero, and why his counterpart, despite doing what he did with the belief that it would end the war more quickly, ultimately took the wrong path. |
I'm not entirely sure why you're being dismissive and seem to think I dont get your argument, but whatever. You seem to not understand the basic concept of right and wrong, or look at it in a juvenile way, by arguing that being the lovable fool made Hero II right and everyone who was sneaky was wrong. The guy makes himself out to be a prick to save innocent life, and he's without morals? I'm not sure how you don't grasp the full picture, here.
I mean Jesus fucking Christ, Jowy says he has no regrets about what he did. The whole point of that ending is that it didn't matter, they both did what they thought was right, and in the end they got what they wanted. |
Well, just about anyone from FFT that appeared after Chapter one had it coming (and most from the first chapter did as well). Also, I fucking loved Kefka. The final dialogue between him and the group is greatness. A truly twisted villian.
- WraithTwo - Double Post: Who else wanted to FUCKING ROCK Pokey's ass in Earthbound? That little bitch needed to DIE. - WraithTwo - |
Okay, I'm about seven hours into Suikoden V and I'm already tempted to put Gizel Godwin here, continuing the successful run of great Suikoden villains. Extremely well written character with a penchant for elaborate schemes and not a moral in sight, not to mention he just LOOKS (and talks) like someone you want to punch out. Getting to his throat (hopefully) as a reward is only going to make playing the game better.
|
I agree with Algus..I couldn't wait to just beat the crap outta him. Same goes for Luca Blight and Seymour. Oh and I forgot her name, but the sorceress type girl from Suikoden III...always hated her. And..well I guess he's not too villainous at all...but Prince Charmles from Dragon Quest VIII deserves as much, if not more, than the others.
|
Easy. Pokey and Algus. Algus for his betrayal, and Pokey for being that fucking bitchtit from my grade 4 class who would pick a fight and then cry to his daddy the principal when you hit him. UGH. I JUST WANTED TO KILL HIM DEAD DEAD DEAD.
And Algus just boils my blood. He stands for everything that priviliege and dishonour brings to the table. He's responsible for Teta and Delita's fall. He starts everything. He's just... terrible. |
-Sephiroth after the infamous death scene. Before him, I would say The Turks. And before them, Yuffie for stealing my money :P
-Ozma in FFIX is a planet I wish never existed. He is broken. -I wanted to kill Sin due to having a great deal of entertainment fighting HUGE bosses. -That damn mask boss in Chrono Cross. It took me 30 minutes of luck and unprepared strategy - plus me forgetting to save before the battle - to beat it. So annoying. -Just like Cid, I too wanted to mash Ultima Weapon's face in! Ahh I think that's it. |
Really? The Turks? I never wanted to kill them, I wanted to outwit them. Stay one step ahead. I hated SHINRA, not the turks. Same with Seph. He had to die to protect the planet, but I didn't blame the guy. I'd probably have done the same in his shoes. And Ozma? What the fuck for? There's no backstory to Ozma. He's just HARD. You need a story reason to want to mash him.

-Giving those friendly monsters precious shit for free to even ATTACK this beast is more than enough story.

He actually deserved to be shamefully crushed by no heroe or in any battle; he had to die in a quicko way like the one suggested in the attached image. |
Seymor in FFX was, and is probably still my most hated villan in an RPG. He was so smug with himself all the time, i just waited for my moment to stick it to 'im.
Also Lynx in Chrono Cross was another big one. He was so delightfully evil, i either wanted to keep his body for the rest of the game (his attacks were way cooler than serge's) or put him right out. |
The one I had the urge to kill was the boss from Xenogears. I can't even count how many times he beated me to death before I was able to defeat him. Not only that but it took me 80 hours to finish Xenogears and at the time I had got a new game but I wanted to finish Xeongears first, when I killed him I felt like I took a weight of my back.

When he's Mortibody, just cast reflect. He winds up killing himself.... Anyway.... I agreed with Tidus: "Stay up there!" I was tired of fighting him. 4 fights? I mean, come on now--that was as bad as the real boss in FFIX. Luca Blight was one I always felt justified in beating down. He felt that everyone was beneath him and deserved to die. But, I'd have to say the one bad guy I wanted to beat down from the moment I "met" him would have to be Colton from Suikoden IV. He was bossy, and I just didn't like the way he treated the group..... |
