Guess that Anime Melody

Guess that Anime OP/ED Melody #001

I thought this would be a good way to perhaps spice up this section of the forum a bit. Basically I will play various melodies from Anime opening and ending songs on a piano and you all can try guessing what Anime it is from. The one who guesses it correct first can then message me a suggestion for the next song to do and we will continue in that fashion.

1. First I will start with a short intro like this:
Get the Flash Player to play this audio file:

2. Then after a few days (if no one gets it right) I will post more of the melody :
Get the Flash Player to play this audio file:

3. Then finally if no one still gets it I will post the melody mixed in with a backing/karaoke track :
Get the Flash Player to play this audio file:

4. I suppose sometime around this point I will post the lyrics from the song excerpt as well :

Spoiler:
Hatenaki yume motomeru shirubenaki sekai de

Kasanaru omoi kokoro tsukisasu kodou
Shizuka ni tsuzuku tamerai mo nai uta

Tooku sora no kanata kara mazariatta bokura no kage
Hitsuzen to kimagure no naka shirusareta kioku

Surechigatta toki no uzu
Kuchihatete mo kimi no koe o shinjite

Hatenaki yume motomeru shirubenaki mirai de
Boku ga hikari nakushite mo itsuka
Kimi ga tomoshite kureta kirameku mune no honoo
Tsubasa ni kawaru kibou no kakera

...

5. If no one still guesses correctly after about a week at the most, I will post what the song was and choose a new one.

BTW can anyone guess this song yet?

I hope you all enjoy the guessing.
As long as people keep guessing I will keep posting new songs.

*If you guess the song correctly please try to choose a popular song from a recent Anime for your request, and avoid obscure songs no one will recognize.

Sakabadger Dec 14, 2009 09:06 PM

A long long time ago we used to have a "Guess the anime tune" or something like that, where people would post excerpts of an anime's soundtrack. It proved to be both challenging (due to the sheer amount of BGM a series might have) and tedious (creating excerpts) and the thread died soon after that.

So I applaud you in your effort to bring some life to this forum, but I hope you are aware of how much a hassle generating new audio clips frequently is going to be.

Oh yeah

Spoiler:
It's from Tsubasa Chronicle amirite

Lauro Dec 14, 2009 09:16 PM

It really doesn't take me that long to transcribe a short section of a song like this (I will probably keep just doing to the first bridge or ~1 min. sections), and it would probably only be once a week or so that there would be a new one created.

Also, if we keep it to relatively new and popular OPENING and ENDING songs it shouldn't be too difficult to keep the thread active.

It would get a little annoying with BGM I agree, it would get tedious transcribing complicated pieces with their multiple voices and harmonies as well.

P.S. If anyone knows how I can get this [mp3] tag working with 4shared or some other free hosting please share. I can't seem to find a direct link to the mp3 that stays fresh.

Your right, private message me a song you want to do next if you feel like it Sakabadger.

Sakabadger Dec 14, 2009 09:19 PM

For the record, please define "popular" (different things are popular in different circles, after all) and "recent" (how many years back are we talking?).

No clue about 4shared. Don't suppose you know anyone with hosting you can bum off of?

Lauro Dec 14, 2009 09:33 PM

By "popular" I mean those series that quite a few people are following -- for instance if you go to anidb or another similar site and the series has a ton of tags and votes. Just try to avoid obscure animes like web only ones, animes that groups never subbed, one ep ovas, or childish/strange shows that only the hardcore otakus would be following.

By "recent" I would say within the last several years (preferably this year), possibly as far back as the early 2000s, but I would even avoid that and try to stick with newer series.

I will keep looking into a way to embed the audio files but for now I guess I will just continue linking until I find a solution.

Sakabadger Dec 14, 2009 09:46 PM

I never visit most anime sites like anidb, so I'll just have to rely on my own fabulously great taste in animu instead. Woo

Submission sent, have fun with it.

Thanks.., but after reading one of Mersenne's old posts I think I figured out how to use/abuse 4shared to get the job done. ^^

When someone offers private hosting, use it. Forget the 4shared bullshit.

I will see how stable 4shared is for a few days first, if it starts messing up I might take him up on the offer. I just don't want to waste his bandwidth if it isn't needed. ;)

I wonder if Lauro intends for other people to post samples up, and for it to include non-OP/EDs?

In other news, I can't tell what that is. Derp.

Zergrinch Dec 15, 2009 08:53 AM

Actually, I think his intent was to transcribe the song, and make it progressively more elaborate if people can't guess what it is.

I would rather just stick to the four hints like I was doing for the first two as well zzeroparticle, it is sort of more fun that way instead of just submitting a recording of the song and having people guess off that.

Please private message me a new anime opening/ending song to transcribe if you could zzeroparticle.

zzeroparticle Dec 15, 2009 02:26 PM

BAH! All right. I sent him a PM with a new OP theme from a different series than the one that I had used in post#15.

Still, if anyone can figure out which anime the BGM I posted is from feel free to take a stab at it to make me happy :3

I'm sort of skeptical as to if it will catch on or not as well. I will probably keep it going for at least a few more though to see how it goes before I decide to give up or not.

The first one to send me a private message can choose the next anime opening/ending song for me to transcribe the melody from.

If no one chooses anything tomorrow I will post another one I had previously created.

Sakabadger Dec 19, 2009 08:04 PM

It's only going to be as popular as it is accessible. I've never seen The Twelve Kingdoms, so obviously I was never going to get that one. And if I dunno the source, why post, right?

Anyway, I do hope this catches on somewhat. More activity is always nice.

EDIT: Might I suggest not waiting so long before posting new hints? Attention span is a problem, after all.

Short-lived, but expected. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for the effort!

Perhaps someone else will decide to keep this going by chopping up bits of the actual music tracks.

Lauro Dec 27, 2009 01:48 AM

Originally I thought I would only be doing these maybe once or twice a week, however even with the few playing it ended up being almost one a day. At 30 minutes to an hour a piece it starts adding up and I started neglecting things like piano and singing practice to create these little recordings. I was also sort of hoping / expecting more people would get interested but that never seemed to happen.

I zipped up all the files in the rare case someone actually wants to listen to any of these. I find them useful personally for singing practice, especially for more difficult songs, which is why I initially started creating them.

If any of you want me to transcribe a melody for you to use for singing/karaoke feel free to message me. I can either create one of these simple mp3s of me playing with the karaoke track or create some sheet music (though that takes a little longer). I can also possibly transcribe some solo piano pieces or other instrumental works in case you play an instrument.

...and if anyone wants to continue this thread or start a similar one like Sakabadger mentioned by all means do so. ;)

Collection of Songs :: Download

zzeroparticle Dec 27, 2009 01:59 AM

Well, thanks for keeping it up for the.. errr.. 3 of us though! Your efforts are very much appreciated and it's always nice to see anison-related stuff around here :)

Sakabadger Dec 27, 2009 02:23 AM

It seems like you unfortunately underestimated the ability(???) of the (3) people posting here. It's tough to find a balance between difficult and easy for this type of thing. The anime picture thread probably only thrives because it's so simple to take a screencap and upload it.

If there's a free, simple and fast solution for cropping mp3s, then it'd be easy to continue this game.

Then one day the focus will somehow shift to Touhou arrangements, Blah will arrive, and the universe will be crushed.

slayer25k Dec 27, 2009 06:08 AM

Even though this is only my 4th posting in this thread, I really liked it!

I appreciate your effort in making transcriptions all day long. It's really sad that nobody else caught interest, but it can't be helped.

I also thought of me doing transcriptions and to play them on guitar, but they would end up as full-fledged and highly elaborated arrangements and definitely not suited for this kind of guessing game.. In terms of the cost/performance-ratio. :tpg:

Well.. we will see. Let the future present itself!

Omnislash124 Dec 27, 2009 11:05 AM

If you guys want to keep going, I could take over, despite this being the first time I've posted here. I've been following it a bit, but the only one I could have guessed was Allegro Cantabile, which was quickly snapped up by Saka. If it's just a melodic line, I should be able to do it pretty quickly on piano. I've also got a massive collection of random OP/EDs that I can pull sections from and crop quickly (including instrumental versions of the OP/EDs).

Well.. we will see. Let the future present itself!

Yeah... I thought hmm... maybe this would be more interesting if I started with the bass line, then the chord progression, then some of the melody, and then maybe some piano arrangement intertwining both. With my luck though after completing all the recordings I would probably end up posting the intro or bass line and someone would correctly guess it before I could add any of the other hints.

For someone with a good ear though I imagine the possibilities for this thread could be endless.

Omnislash124 if you ever do take over, which I think would be great, I could probably find the time to help you out once a week or so. I can also usually find just about any OP/ED single (for the karaoke tracks) or other anime music so you can message me if you are having problems with that.

You shouldn't underestimate the abilities of these posters though, or how time consuming such a simple task like making a recording of a melody can end up being (especially for some of these songs).

Guess that Anime OP/ED Melody #013

Let's try this out...

Please excuse the slightly off rhythms as I don't have access to a good recording device right now, I'm transcribing the music in Finale, which is relatively rigid in terms of the rhythm. Should be fairly easy as it is the chorus of the song.

Saka, if you'd like a free and easy way to crop music files into mp3, ogg, or wav or hell just about anything you could think of then go get Goldwave. At worst it'll remind you to go register it with a popup every now and then but is still perfectly usable. It's EXTREMELY easy to crack though.

Hint #1 Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to host mp3 files for embedding yet, so I only have a link: 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download MysteryOP13.mp3

To embed mp3s here using 4shared (what I did) go to the download page for the file that you uploaded and view the page source (Ctrl+U in Firefox). From there do a search for "file=" and copy the url located there and paste it between [ mp3 ] [ /mp3 ] tags (with no spaces between the brackets and mp3).

Also, it is far easier in my opinion to just play the melody on an instrument and record that instead of using finale. I think I cut my time in half or even more when I stopped actually writing the music down on paper and just started listening and recording the songs phrase by phrase.

I feel you are going to have a really tough time transcribing some of these rhythms using finale.
Some of those electronic/trance/dance songs are so difficult to find the downbeats or any sense of rhythm for.

Omnislash124 Dec 28, 2009 05:00 PM

Yeah, I realized that as I finished it, as I didn't think it was supposed to take anywhere near that long. Unfortunately, I need to find a good recording device before I use a real piano. The other thing is that I'll only have access to a piano for a short while as I'll be returning to college at the tail end of January.

Thanks, I'll try that out.

As for the current melody, beats me.

Omnislash124 Dec 28, 2009 11:12 PM

Personally, I use Audacity to do my audio editing. Open source and comes with a lot of neat effects you can put on your audio tracks. Not sure if it supports OGG, but I use it for Midi, MP3, and WAV all the time.

I have to wonder if this is too obscure to guess or if the faux rhythm is just so far off it's unrecognizable. I assume something that has 4 seasons should be fairly popular. Either that or nobody's followed this series and my taste in anime is simply horrible.

Omnislash124 Dec 30, 2009 10:28 AM

Ok, I'm going to assume my transcription into Finale was just so horrible that it's unrecognizable. If you know the song, this should be easy: Bridge + Chorus, full song.

Hint #2 Get the Flash Player to play this audio file: (Bridge + Chorus, Full Track)

If it makes you feel any better, I still can't recognize it. :U

zzeroparticle Dec 30, 2009 07:52 PM

Me neither. Also, anything that goes on for four seasons is a little too long for me to stick around and watch to completion :V

Lauro Dec 31, 2009 10:10 PM

I thought it might of been from Maria-sama ga Miteru from the first hint and was trying to re-arrange the rhythm and notes in my head to make it fit but I couldn't find any songs that matched. Don't really recognize any of the song in the second hint either unfortunately.

This series was the first 'real' anime I watched (Robotech and Speed Racer doesn't count), as a dub on Cartoon Network. So it holds a special spot in my heart. This is my favorite song in the series, and I like how the song's motif was worked into the more poignant moments of Akazukin Chacha. :)

Boo got it, although I suspect only after searching for the lyrics of the chorus

Depending on the type of hard drive failure, it just miiight be possible to recover the data. You just got to sacrifice an external enclosure, and freeze the hard disk for a few hours! :33:

oturansama Feb 15, 2010 11:24 PM

While the lack of guessing can in part be attributed to the general lack of activity here, it's also fair to say that people don't guess when they simply have no clue. But, you know, what can you do.

Zergrinch Mar 2, 2010 05:33 AM

In an effort to end this current submission and move on, I call upon the might of Google: that's the ED to Tegami Bachi.

Isn't HIMEKA that Canadian or something who won a contest in Japan and became a pro?

oturansama Mar 2, 2010 06:07 PM

According to :: Himeka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"She was the winner of the Second Annual Animax Anison Grand Prix, that gathers aspiring singers from all over Japan for the chance to make a professional debut and sing a theme song in an anime television show."
If no one else wants to I will take the next melody.

Omnislash124 Mar 2, 2010 10:18 PM

We probably don't need confirmation, but Saka is correct. This is Tegami Bachi's ED, Hatenaki Michi by HIMEKA.

Sakabadger Mar 3, 2010 10:49 PM

Yeah, I thought that one would be simple to guess.

oturansama Mar 3, 2010 11:24 PM

I'm surprised that one was guessed so quickly. :erm:

Someone else is probably going to have to take the next melody as I need to catch up on some stuff for the remainder of this week. I will try and create the hints for 25 or 26 though... :eagletear:

From zzeroparticle. I'll admit, I had hard time coming up with something challenging without being totally obscure.
Unfortunately, I couldn't fulfill that promise. This errs on the easy side at least. So, if anything, this should be VERY easy (assuming you have seen this particular opening).

Sorry for the delay. ^_^;;

Considering that opening is instrumental to begin with and had an actual piano solo version, it's not very hard to guess at all. But I'll pass on mentioning the name so we can identify the nubs who haven't seen this series.

My sentiments exactly. I'm not sure what hint #2, 3, and 4 should be, because if hint #1 doesn't ring a bell, #2, 3, and 4 won't either. (Well, maybe #4.)

You should probably just guess it Sakabadger, too many nubs here it seems. :D

I have a really good hint I want to use for one of these next melodies as well. :p

I got an idea from Sakabadger's earlier post so I searched around for
some sheet music to piano versions of songs. I may play one of these
every once in a while for a change of pace.
It has been a while since I've played any anime music on the piano,

This was a unexpectedly pleasant song to listen to and transcribe. It is sort of from a niche anime though so it may be a little difficult to guess.

It was a little annoying that they recorded the karaoke and original versions seperately!!! The drummer was all over the place with the tempo in the karaoke version making it really difficult to get the melody and karaoke track to line up. *sigh*

oturansama Mar 20, 2010 12:45 PM

Hmm... it didn't look like anyone was going to be able to guess that one so I went ahead and posted the solution.

Omnislash124, do you want to take the next melody or do you want me to post another piano version I recorded ( that people should be able to guess easily ) so at least you have a suggestion to go by?

Anyways I had an idea which will help speed things up a lot. 4th Edition has been a lot of fun, but at times it's just very clunky and really altogether overcomplicated — and it just gets more complicated at every level! Not to mention that 4E characters have so damned many HP, they're nearly impossible to kill!

But I know the solution.

Gentlemen, as of today we switch to Rules Cyclopedia Dungeons & Dragons, circa 1991. Now, while many of your particular races and classes are no longer valid, I think you'll adjust well to the conversion if you really give it a chance.

I've taken the liberty of converting your characters to this system as best I could, although, necessarily, some details were lost. Let me know if you have any questions about how your new abilities work!

Omnislash124 Apr 3, 2010 11:16 AM

Based on the last 3 words of the lyrics, I can guess that the title of the song is 愛のメロヂイー (Melody of Love) or something similar, but I have no idea where it's from.

Also, you might want to tune your piano. ;)

Jellyfluff Apr 3, 2010 06:15 PM

lol... it was supposed to be a forte piano sample library that I was using. And yeah it did sort of clash quite a bit with the background vocals and accompaniment -- some baroque tuning I'm guessing. I probably wont use it for any future melodies. :p

I guess you can have credit for this one as that is the name, and it is unlikely anyone else will guess it.

Go ahead and put up that melody you had in mind earlier for #30 if you want.

...well activity here seems really dead. :(

Is anyone still interested in keeping this going? Please reply with some words of encouragement if you want me or Omni to keep at this. I'm thinking I might just give up on this and maybe start a anime piano music thread or something.

Sakabadger Apr 17, 2010 04:06 AM

I find this to be a fun distraction and would like you to keep going, but that's just me. I don't always have the time or inclination to check back here frequently, so sometimes I end up missing a bout of activity.

My assumption was that the two of you had some sort of schedule or agreement as to who's doing the current melody. Either that, or the format of this game is going to have to change a bit since I don't think most people have the ability to generate new tunes. It would be easy to turn the game into a simple "guess this anime tune" where people crop BGM/songs, but then it could also end up being quite difficult to play...

Anyway, please continue if you're up for it.

Omnislash124 Apr 17, 2010 10:26 AM

I'm always up for it, it's just timing issues. Occasionally a school week will be a bit too busy to come up with a melody.

I was also tossing around the idea of just using BGM for a bit, but then I was thinking that the issue with BGM was that it was, simply, BGM. It would be extremely hard to guess, even if you did watch the show because, by definition, it plays in the background to supplement the show, not to draw attention away from the show.

I don't think we have a schedule we run on right now, I just assume we wait for the next suggestion to be PM'd by the solver of the last one.

zzeroparticle Apr 23, 2010 11:43 AM

I did this melody a little different from the others. Basically
I played three short background music selections from a
single anime on the piano and you all just guess the series
they are all from.

If no one guesses it after the first three hints I will do the traditional
karaoke plus melody (for the opening or ending) for the 4th hint, and the
lyrics for the 5th if it gets that far.

Something about that third sample and the wording of your last post makes me think Maria-sama ga Miteru.

Almost there, same genre and setting as Maria-Sama ga Miteru... ;)

Too tired to think, so I'll just throw a lucky shot at Utena. Been too long since I've last seen it to make a proper guess tho.

You got it Lord Styphon!!! I can never get enough of those types of anime and manga. :p

I already finished creating the 'karaoke and melody' hint so I went ahead and added it to the above post.

Please PM me a suggestion for the next melody Lord Styphon.

Like an Angel from Mermaid's Forest by Chiaki Ishikawa (Opening #1)

Jellyfluff May 4, 2010 03:20 PM

Hints #1-3 added!!!

This is sort of an older, slightly obscure anime so you all might need to dig around a bit to identify it.

Edit:
Omnislash is probably going to take over this thread again as I won't be able to check it for a while.

Omnislash124 Jul 4, 2010 06:22 PM

So a good 2 months later, I'm going to assume this thread is dead...

If it's worth anything, I've got plenty of time now. Do we want to keep going on this, or let this thread rest in peace?
