Borderlands - Shootan and Lootan
Borderlands. Is it a roleplaying game? Is it a shooter? It's Both. Do you enjoy tabulating spreadsheets of the optimum equipment combinations usable in a given situation? Do you enjoy blowing the shit out of things with the biggest gun you can get your grubby little hands on? You should enjoy this game. Barring any catastrophic "wow the previews didn't indicate that" failure, this is looking to be an interesting hybrid of two seemingly incompatible genres. It also has a really interesting cel-shaded art style. The addition of 4 player coop is just the icing on the cake, really, especially when Steam lets you do this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09.../Misc/snip.png Hell yes, 4 player coop for $33.75 a person. That's a pretty sweet deal. Well, that ended quickly. Still, it's a great deal, find friends to buy this game with! The reviews have been pretty kind to it so far: 1UP - B+ Giant Bomb - 4/5 IGN - 8.8 |
With exchange, that's even cheaper than the 40 dollars it'll be in store for Canadians.
NextGen Player - Canada's Premier Gaming Blog: Borderlands Will Sell For Cheap In Canada Basically it's like Batman in that it'll be discounted pretty well right off the hop, which is a plus to anyone from the great white north looking for the console version. |

I was just wondering recently who I could get together to buy this game with me. |
I have to say, from what little I know... I'm interested. I think I'd be more likely to get the 360 version than anything, but everything I'm reading about this makes it look great. I like RPGs, and I tend to believe that the addition of RPG elements to other types of game can work really well.
Even setting that aside, the setting and concept for this game sound interesting enough that I'd be interested regardless of the specific game mechanics. I'm going to see if there's a demo available... |
My PC's not good enough to run this at a decent framerate, I'm sure.
But I do intend on picking up a console version. Probably 360 since there's the multiplayer aspect. |
Getting the 360 version tomorrow. Sadly, my PC lacks processing power for me to get the PC version so no go for it.. yet.
|
Quote:
Also, for anyone who's worried about their computer: o OS: Windows XP/Vista o Processor: 2.4 Ghz or equivalent processor o Memory: 1GB System RAM (2GB recommended with Vista) o Graphics: 256mb video ram or better (GeForce 8 series or higher/Radeon R8xx series) o Hard Drive: 8 GB or more free space o Sound: Windows compatible sound card Those are the minimum system specs. For a new game these are actually pretty good. |
Garr's our fourth.
That went quicker than I thought it would. Expect paypals mo0. |
Do you need one more? >.> Or, are there 3 others who would be interested in doing this?
|
Got this from Steam in a four-pack the other day. Why do we have to wait until the 26th D: Nooooo... This is supposed to tide me over until Dragon Age. I don't wanna wait no more
|
It's just 6 days holy christ.
Finish whatever game you're playing. PS Should be released tomorrow but Gearbox got hold of the info~ |
I think what Term means is that stores were originally going ot be selling the PC version early, but 2K/Gearbox got wind of it and told the stores to knock it off.
|
Okay, convince me GFF.
Do I want to play this on my 360, or do I want to get this and play it on bootcamp pc party time? |
Bootcamp PC party time, if your 'pc' can handle it. I'd be willing to get the same one skills garr and moo got, the 4 pack for whatever money, its cheaper that way, just need 3 others
|
I bought the 4pack for PC. Me, Taco, Animechanic and Lacerta are going to be playing this.
|
:( I want in on the fun too. need 3 people asap
|
That's not to say we can't play with you guys.
4 packs are not exclusive. Blah being all elitst and shit |
If I was Blah I wouldn't want to play with us either. :(
|
Buy it for PC Deni, unless you're really damn good with a gamepad. I've been watching live streams from people who lucked out and got the game for 360 back on the 13th due to retailers screwing up, and Borderlands has the unforgiving precision aiming of a PC FPS. Watching people try to snipe for headshots has been amusing, to say the least.
Edit: I too am very annoyed by the 6 day delay on the PC release. Supposedly it was for optimization, but considering stores are already saying they have the PC version in stock I think that's BS.

I stated in chat that while I'll get this for the 360, there's a very high chance I'll also get the PC version as well.
So yes, throw me on the PC pile as well. I reactivated Steam for this very reason. |
I'm curious how the tank will work. Obviously he'll be able to use heavy weapons, but will he loot brass knuckles or something too? It just seems like in a game that stresses the guns, he kinda gets left out.
|
So for the people who have picked this up (and played it a little), how is it?
|
Quote:
Edit: @Omagnus. Tune in: http://www.justin.tv/evilgamer |
Term and Toku, add me on Steam, TurboGFF, I got another, that makes 4, we're good to go. We;ll go through and purchase it later this evening
|
At least me, Kyndig (Goodhand) and Kaze (Mr Phong) will be picking this up for 360 this morning. Like I told Skills, honestly I'd consider double-dipping on the game via a 4-pack, but it's crazy game release time along with my backlog, don't think I can really justify it -_-.
|
So what exactly is the multiplayer like in this game? Kinda like Diablo or something of that sort?
Also, since I'm a bum and haven't read up on this game at all, does this do drops Diablo-style with unique mods on it instead of just giving you twenty million identical pistols like Fallout 3? |
The multiplayer is drop in drop out. The host's current quest layout is what everyone else gets to play on, but if you join someone's game and beat quests beyond where you are in singleplayer, when you reach that point in singleplayer those quests are still considered done. Your character in single and multi is the same guy, not separated like Diablo.
And yes, the loot is Diablo-style "Pistol with +x% damage and fire bullets and a scope and yada yada". The game advertises millions of guns in the same way Diablo can advertise millions of items, they look to mostly fall into standard shooter archetypes. The wacky bullet types and the whole appeal of every few minutes getting a new BEST GUN EVER look to be the fun of the loot system. |
Game is awesome, as expected. Currently rolling as Lillith with a crazy damage SMG, Shotgun that has a high chance to do critical electrical damage, and a revolver that fires 7 rounds at once that reloads in about 0.25 seconds. Phasewalk was kinda so-so (mainly for bailing out of bad situations) until I started getting elemental stacks on top of it, right now I do pretty a pretty good electrical shockwave when I phase both in and out. Kills midgets pretty effectively.
|
So all the reports from the people who got it early and people who are playing it today that managed to get high enough is that Phase Strike is... disappointing.
It turns out according to Gearbox that the skill is not working as intended and they are trying to figure out what the cause is. |
Luckily I hadn't planned on using Phase Strike really, but that still sucks.
|
I'm getting the soldier's assault rifle skill to 5, focus on sniper then finally shotgun. Going for infantry branch then medic.
I barely use the elementals but I have about 5 different elemental weapon types as luggage. Shit, turret is awesome. Soften a group with rifles then deploy turret for sexy times, or turret first to stall a group while I pick on the flanks. And resurrection gets costly as you move along so gotta be careful. Currently doing the 5-part journals which require a runner. For my Steam, I'll probably end up using the berserker. |
Thoughts on how long you guys will keep playing this? I'm in the middle of FFXII and don't want to bail on it, but this looks like something I'd really enjoy playing after I finish.
|
You'd get it on PC, huh? I'm definitely not in a position to play the shit out of it just yet and would offer to join you in multiplayer, but I got it on 360.
|
PS3 users seem to be reporting some random fucked up shit going on in their game. Like getting booted from co-op then having their save file corrupted.
It also seems that some other skills (and class mods that boost said skills) are just plain not working. Kind of a mixed report though as there are those who are reporting a skill and the skill's class mod not working, and those who have it working just fine. Right now it seems Gearbox is working on trying to fix the PS3 bugs before the international version hits, as the PS3 has the most bugs out of all 3 versions. |
Hey, if anyone else wants to go in on a four pack with me, let me know. I don't know if I want to pick up L4D2 or not. I'm still a bit burned out from the first and I think this game would be a fun change of pace.
|
I'm currently trying to talk my wife into splitting it with me and my cousins. I'm pretty sure the two of them are down, but she's hesitating. But if that falls through, I'll let you know.
|
Oh look, a talent calculator! This is my general idea for a Soldier build. :D
|
Actually got a good lol at this. |
|||||
Well, my cousins suddenly became broke somehow, something about cable, cell phone bills or some such nonsense. So I just need you, RR, if you're still looking for people, and one more.
|
I'm in, especially if we do it at the preorder price!
|
Alright, Wolf had to bail on me, anyone else need a fourth?
|
I feel really bad for backing out on ya, man. :(
My friend (the original fourth) called me at the last minute and said his dad wanted to get in on the deal with us, and we've known each other for years, so I couldn't really turn him down. There's only a day left, so someone help him out! |
EDIT: I've got a copy now |
Welp, Strife just missed out by mere minutes.
If anyone wishes they had gotten in when the 4 pack deal was still running, just PM me and we'll work out the details. :) |
Don't know if it exists on PC, but on consoles there's a major bug where you lose all of your skill points -_-. Didn't happen to me, but I've seen at least a few different people post about it, it seems to be occuring on occasion when you accept an invite to another game without saving and exiting back to your title screen, or when you're joining an existing game when it's in the middle of auto-saving. So at least for now to be safe always save and exit to the title screen before accepting another Borderlands game invite, and if someone is joining your game hang tight for a second and don't move while they load in so you don't hit a checkpoint/auto save. Doesn't seem hugely widespread but the thread on it at Gearbox and Gamefaqs are both getting pretty lengthy of people having it happen.
Also has anyone actually played the PC version yet? Apparently it's fine for some people, but completely totally fucking broken and unplayable/crashing for everyone else? |
The PC version appears to have about a 10% success rate in terms of people getting connections. I don't have the greatest hardware ever but after turning Vsync on I managed to get a very playable and steady framerate... at 800x600 resolution. Sigh. Still, the game is fun despite the blurriness.
|
Yeah, aside from a lot of the tech issues people seem to be having, big thing seems to be connecting to online games at all. Also I don't know the details, but apparently you're able to go in and edit some of the PC files that makes large improvements to the FOV, Vsync, binding some useful keys, and other obvious things that should have been included in the game itself -_-.
Right now on 360 I've got a 41 Siren, 29 Hunter, and 11 Soldier. Got some bitchin' SMG for my siren that does x4 Fire damage with a scope, good clip, rate of fire and accuracy. Plus my SMG proficiency is so high (26?) and I've my skill maxed that adds chance to do elemental damage, plus I've got my Class Mod that gives me +48% SMG damage and +33% or so chance to land elemental damages. Even on 2nd Playthrough 90% of enemies I hit them with a couple of rounds, and insane fire damage kills them almost instantly. So fucking awesome. |
Yeah, you can fiddle with the .ini to put in certain things that were not in the game (and should have been, shame on you Gearbox!).
Online is ass, unless you were kissed by the magical internet fairy, hosting is pretty much a coin toss. That said, I am able to host although it seems I have become the dedicated host for Taco and his motley crew. So far I have only encountered one bug, and that was when I first started the game. Taco and his roommate joined in, and one of my quests bugged out as we picked it up, I had to go into Single Player to complete it but that was about the extent of the problem. I love Fire damage. I have a x2 Sniper (with 98.7% accuracy) and a x3 SMG that are just delicious when coupled with Spark and Slayer. I am stalking Zed hoping his post-apocalyptic Japanese vending machine will dispense for me a Firefly class mod. I just need a backup weapon now :< edit: And thus, Zed has blessed me with my class mod. |
I think I'm the only person on the internet not bothered by the limited FOV by default, and the requirement for a toggle as the only fix as it stands is too aggravating to deal with.
That said, massive v-sync issues right out the gate, and while it's able to be solved in the ini, I ended up forcing it from my nVidia control panel as an override. The option set seems lacking in game too, with no real voice control or half a dozen other features you'd expect. Doesn't really matter though since co-op is the shit. Whatup animechanic. Found a load of purples but nothing better, so far a silly revolver is my current main weapon. |
'sup Skills. Glad you could come get owned by Badass Fire Alpha Skags with us.
I have had no trouble hosting, but I opened some ports too. According to a readme and the gearbox forums, these are the ones you should open if you're having troubles: 7777 (TCP/UDP) 28900 (TCP) 27900 (UDP) 28910 (TCP) 28902 - not in the readme, but opening this port helped alot of people |
I got a leve 18 hunter so far, and I'm having tons of fun playing co-op with a buddy of mine.
One question, I didn't fiddle with the ini stuff yet, what's it change? And I dont see anything wrong with the FOV by default. What does changing it really do? Let you see more? Doesn't that destroy the whole purpose of an FPS? |
I tried messing with it and the result made it look like I was viewing the game through a fisheye lens, especially when running. If you don't mind it you should definitely leave it alone.
I did shut off mouse smoothing though. Navigating menus seems a lot easier without it. Haven't noticed a difference in the actual aiming, but there may be a slight change there too. |
I'm playing with FoV right now, and 90 while running isn't as terrible. 100 though, while running, makes me sick :( I also disabled mouse smoothing and enabled vsync. Will play for a bit to see if I notice anything
|
Skills asked for what I see when I play on my apparently shitty laptop:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/09...nShot00000.jpg It actually looks worse than this because my monitor tries to stretch to fit vertically, leaving me with a lot of blurriness that I actually kinda got used to. |
How do you take screenshots? print screen just paste's a black void into paint.
|
F8. One of the many key bindings you can only discover by browsing through the ini files which are stored in My Documents.
Big annoying warning box for big annoying "feature"! Check out %user%/documents/my games/borderlands/SaveData/Player.wsg! That has your GameSpy password stored in plaintext! It is 2009 and we still have devs doing this? Jesus. |
I stole this from SA. I just tried it, and it works great.

I dunno, I'd rather not put my computer on a virtual LAN that any random fuck could connect to.
|
You can always go to an empty channel that no one will bother to look in. It doesn't matter what room you're in, as long as you're in it together.
|
Well, I was thinking less in the game sense and more in general security sense. Any word on just how much access one gets to a computer when you're connected using this thing?
|
Has anyone experienced any audio problems at all?
30 minutes into playing single player for the first time last night, and I lost all sound in the game. Since I was just on the first few missions, it didn't impede my progress too much, but I can definitely see this being a serious problem the further on in the game I get. |
So I splurged on the game with some room mates and played it up into the early hours of this morning. Gotta say, multiplayer LAN is kickass in this. The story has left me pretty cold so far, but the slick visuals, art style, soundtrack, attitude, and Lilith's rack really make this an awesome experience. Lovin' how some enemy names are straight-up prefixed with 'Badass' and 'Roid Rage', etc. Totally a riot.
Quote:
Pretty awesome how it's possible to get used to 'shitty' graphics though. I managed at first, but then I glanced over at my room mates' gaming machines cranking out this game's glorious visuals and had to do something about it... |
Huh, I did a print screen then paste to bitmap to get the following picture and it worked ok.
Anyways, this was the result of my friend (Raffet) getting behind the wheel of an outrunner for the first time: http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/2...ngproblems.jpg He somehow managed to get the green outrunner upside down underneath the pink outrunner in such a way that the pink outrunner was completely high centered and unable to move. It boggles the mind. |
Hey, PC Players, here's a list of tweaks from the Gearbox forums that may be helpful.
Quote:
Near the Vsync option there's also flags for MSAA and different types of filtering. It seems now that instead of leaving out normal configuration options for PC games, Gearbox just didn't put ingame switches for them. I guess during all of that "optimization" they also forgot to change the UI from the console version. |
I gave the game a shot this morning. It seems pretty rad so far, though I have to say when I first saw a green item I was all "HOLY COW A SET ITEM WHAT LUCK"
I went with a sniper and seem to be having much better luck with a sniper rifle and assault rifle combo. For people later in the game, do I have any compelling reason to stick with pistols other than the kinda mediocre buffs I can spend my skill points on? I like sniping shit from far away and then finishing them off as they run towards me with the assault rifle. Also, can't believe how obvious they made it that this game was made for the console. No mouse wheeling in menus!? Looking forward to trying out a bunch of those modifications taco posted later tonight/tomorrow to see how much better the game plays. Also, anyone know if this was meant to be played on a widescreen monitor? I'm playing on a 17" at 1280x1024 and the screen feels really cluttered when infoboxes pop up. |
Revolvers are insane, and still get the pistol bonuses.
Getting one to launch a couple bullets at a time is awesome. |
Haven't had as much time as I'd like, but I'm lev 7 as soldier. I've gone from pistol and rifle to repeater/shotgun and now I'm sporting a repeater dropped off of Nine Toes in addition to a rockin' sniper rifle. The shooter in me is loving the hell out of this. "I'm bored of this weapon. Oooh. This one is stronger. Replacement time."
Also, I love timing Skagg jumps to where I'd unload a shotgun round in their mouth mid-pounce and take them out. It's also slick how some critters have set points where you can land a crit on them. Case-in-point, pop a skagg when its mouth is open. I came across a level 10 Badass Skag the other day and ran up a cliff face. Its path-finding sucked, so it took forever to get close to me, but I would hit it in the mouth whenever it roared/yawned with my sniper rifle, and it'd destroy it every time. And ^5 for the info, Taco. I knew there'd be a way to disable the un-skippable movies. My main gripe so far is regarding glitches. Whenever Steam boots it up, it tries installing this item or software that NEVER makes it. I get an illegal operation message of sorts and it folds, then the game boots like normal. Also, I crashed last night for the weirdest thing. Alt-tabbed it, like I've done regularly a few times, and it threw some wall-of-text error report at me. But in closing, Claptraps are the coolest things ever. I love them to death. |
Quote:
|
Because it was cheaper than the 360 version and I helped 3 other people also get it for cheap?
|
In his defense, the set up he's got should run it much better than it does. I understand his graphics chipset is a touch underpowered but by no means should it only be capable of that.
Interestingly enough, the graphical style with the quasi-celshading sort of helps make aliasing far more prominent. This is what I get even with 4x AA. http://colonelskills.belkanairforce....nShot00002.png Edit: Further research suggests this is an engine limitation, which is fine. :( |
Quote:
2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 4 gigs of RAM What would have ever made me think "Gee this will only run this game at 800x600!" I even tried the Batman Arkham Asylum demo since that's another recent UT3 game and it ran at 1280x768 perfectly fine. Borderlands maxes out at about 10 fps when I'm staring at a wall and reaches slideshow status the second bullets start flying. |

Try running the game in windowed mode or see if there's some way to disable the game using both cores (if it is trying). I've had to do similar fixes in L4D and TF2 to get stable framerates and it made things A+++.
|
So using both cores can actually HINDER performance? Huh.
Additional Spam: Windowed actually makes things less stable, and manually setting the processes' affinity to one core didn't seem to change much. |
Almost 100 percent certain that was a Source Engine issue, though, wasn't it RR?
|
Mo0 if you find anything out about how to get it to run, post it here. I want to get this so badly, but seeing as how your specs are so close to mine...ya...I'll wait and let you figure it out first >.>

Man, it's crazy how it seems everywhere it's still almost nothing but issues and workarounds for the PC version, didn't think it'd be anywhere near this bad. Glad I didn't pick it up for PC after all. Our gaming PC laptop is pretty good, but if Moo's having those kinds of problems with his setup with his specs that's ridiculous.
Also I've 1000/1000'd the game, so my playtime is winding down now until the DLC hits, have fun :P |
It's been bungled pretty much across the board. The PS3 version is apparently a train wreck of audio and visual issues. And with the level loss bug on the consoles ( I haven't heard of it on PC yet, but I can't be certain of that) it's like everything's fucked up all over again.
At least it's good fun. Played with Jinn, Mo0, and Lace today. Had a blast. FUCK YOU LACE |
What level loss bug is that? I've only barely started as a Hunter on 360, but so far everything has been peachy and explosive fun.
|
Erm, you can lose all your skill points and never get them back, even after respecing.
|
From what I've gathered it seems like if you leave a session without using the exit game button (i.e. accepting someone's invite) things get dicey about your levels.
And keep in mind it's not that you level down to 1, but you lose all of your skill points. Your skills are at 0, you're still at your old level, and there's no way of getting those skill points back again. It cripples your character. |
I'm guessing he's referring to the bug that causes you to lose all of your skill points that I posted about on the last page. If he's not I have no clue.
Personally aside from little weird things here and there, the only thing I consistently had problems with was the final round of the Commons Arena quests (forget the name). That quest is soooo fucking glitchy, across 2 characters I probably had to quit out of the game entirely 3 or 4 times because enemies wouldn't load in so I'd be stuck in there, or I'd die and go back in and ALL of the enemies had respawned, and other fucked up shit. Did it 3 player tonight and it was a fucking mess of glitches, trigger points not happening, etc. Edit: Fuck you guys and your quick responses. |
Yeah, the PC version has been frustrating for me, particularly in the Online Multiplayer department. I seriously don't know what these guys were thinking when they decided to release with a horribly incomplete online component (using gamespy of all things!). Can't tell you how much time I could have spent playing today if I hadn't been fucking around, forwarding and opening ports, as well as testing over and over again.
But - and this is a BIG but - when you finally do get it working, it's a pure and simple blast! One of the most fun coop gaming experiences I've had probably ever. It was great playing with Skills, Mo0 and Lace tonight, even though I was having some technical difficulties and was a few levels lower than them. Hopefully the inevitably coming patch will smooth out these stupid little bugs that cause stupid huge problems. Scratch that: it had better fix them or I'm going to be a very mad little gamer. |
I was disconnected mid-save while playing with a friend of Taco's (who was host) and my character and quests were still oK; then again I don't get most of the shit ya'll do =(
I had a blast with Mo0, Skills, and Jinn (when Jinn wasn't exploding every now and then). Fuck you skills for peer pressure. Also while playing with Taco's friend we stumbled upon a diablo 2 ripoff Rakk in New Haven, and it dropped this lovely item for me: http://oic.houyokusen.com/42ballblaster.jpg |
The game seems to give a very narrow window for levels. Like, I'm level 15 right now, and I don't think I'd be able to hold out very well with a team of level 18s. It definitely feels like a game where you're best having a solid set of friends to play with every night since once you fall behind, you're going to be way behind. :(
Also had some frustrating issues with getting killed after the last enemy is dead. I just got the key to the mine, and I managed to kill the boss with a ton of HP left, but apparently he had thrown two grenades off of the wall behind me and wound up blowing me up. It gave me the opportunity for the saving shot, or whatever it's called, but there was nothing around so I had to lose a decent chunk of money respawning. Also not too fond of how enemies will respawn if you leave a zone and come back, but all of the ammo and treasure chests won't. |
Anyone checked out the QR codes scattered randomly through the game?
I found this one on the way to Sledge: http://www.bigblah.net/upload/borderlandsqr.jpg It decoded into: http://www.bigblah.net/upload/borderlandsqr2.png |

I bought this game on saturday and I have to say I love mostly everything about it including it's different art style and quirky physics.
Though i've received some of the same glitches as previously mentioned it's not quite enough for me to not play this game... My favorite actually is one day i was playing with a friend and we had a collection of bandits in one area, for some reason they didn't want to hit the ground so they twitched for a little bit then just stayed suspended in the air. It was amusing to see the collection of their poses together. |
One quest in the Dahl Badlands produces a TON of Eridian artifacts so have fun with those.
Currently level 34 and having done like 95% of the shit all alone (the rest I fucked around with a group) and still not tired of it. Nearing that 42 storage cap for the Claptrap achieve and whatnot. Only one Eridian weapon so far, and that's from a quest. Also it's better picking up class mods than buying them; my respawn amount is about the same as buying a class mod, which is a fucking TON of cash. |
Quote:
|
But RR, there's a TON of ammo caches lying around.
|
Aim better?
Enemies drop shit tonnes of ammo. |
Quote:
|
Got to the end of the game at Level 35, then after turning in the quest for beating the game hit Level 36. Two million dollars or so, a ton of Eridian gear from plowing through the last area, and delicious orange items. Class mods that I can buy cost me like 5% of my funds :P
|
Hahaha, that'll change; I just bought a Class Mod that was 3.6 million.
Also even though the money counter maxes at 9,999,999, you can continue to accrue money past that, but you just can't see it, which is kind of lame. |
2nd playthrough is awesome as fuck. Better everything is all I can say. All I need to do now is find that last claptrap for the 42-slot achieve. Pretty sure there's a comprehensive list of all claptrap locations somewhere (EDIT: Thank you, GameFAQS).
Currently level 42 Soldier. Thank god for experience points in the Lost Cave (with shock crystals). |
Does anyone else feel all their bloodwing does is flap all over the place, give away your location, and only fly into some dude right before you're going to snipe him?
|
Almost level 50, so far second playthrough has been amazing. The only problem is that with a good Mercenary or Firefly mod Lilith just god modes through the whole damn thing :p
|

Hopefully they'll buff it up a little bit with a patch. Right now I hardly ever use him and can't figure out why I should bother. Then again, many of the perks for the hunter seem mediocre at best.
I'm kinda tempted to just start over as one of the other classes since the sniper rifle seems to be only moderately decent, and his only skill that's actually useful for the sniper rifle that other classes don't have is Focus, which reduces sway. The skills I'm most looking forward to is Relentless, but a "few seconds" seems to only be about five seconds, which means you need to be a kickass sniper to nail one, find another one, and nail him in the head for it to be worthwhile. I think he's one of those classes that could do well in multiplayer, but trying to do it solo is a bit frustrating. |
My Bloodwing oneshots most enemies 2-3 levels below me. But that's because I put most of my points in Rogue. Having a nice Bloodwing damage increase mod helps too.
I actually ended up using a combat rifle much more often than a sniper rifle. |
I've seen some Hunters on second playthrough with batshit insane Bloodwings. Buzzing about 100% chance to Daze on 9 targets, up to 9k damage each target, 1 second cooldown on the skill.
That thing is a one man army. Until it glitches and gets stuck. |

Focus isn't too bad and can be pretty useful, but when you get Calibur up all the way, it can be pretty useful. Trespass in his sniper tree though is really nice. Picking off an enemy from far away without even dealing with the shield first is useful as you can drop enemies way faster. I use hunter solo, mainly because I can never find a good online match that doesn't lag me out within the first minute of playing, and I haven't really had too much of a problem. I actually get really good damage with my guy though. Though I think my weapons are fairly decent so that may be why. I have an orange sniper rifle that has about 240 - 250ish attack (+3 Fire on it too ) , a non-scoped sniper rifle with about 230 attack, and then a revolver with with about the same attack. I commonly switch my 4th weapon slot with +Shock/Acid/Explosion weapons that I usually leave sitting in my inventory until I need them. I've also found that Transfusion grenades are my favorite grenades by far. |
Yeah, the Volcano-type sniper rifle is awesome. A high damage output plus continuous fire damage can put most enemies out or severly damaged. That's why I'm a fan of Maliwan guns.
Though I dig my Vladof and Hyperion guns better though. While my Vladof machine gun has only 113 damage per shot, the accuracy is about 98% while the fire rate is about 10.0. Not to mention the 50+ magazine it has per reload. It's the gun I main right now (and the reason my proficiency in assault rifles is 22 right now). And that's only in the first playthrough. 2nd one should have something better. Favorite 'nade so far is the rain-type. |
The rain type is nice, but it's stuck in a relatively small area. So despite it's high damage, you really need to be accurate for it to be useful. I used my Explosive Longbow grenades for a while, mainly because I could open an assault from super long distance with it, and then just waste everyone else with my sniper rifle before they got to me. What I like about the transfusion in that I can just throw it, and it will hunt down the enemies that it's damaging, so I don't need to worry about aiming too much. Plus, it can be a real life saver if my health gets low by being caught in the fray. I will admit that I also am very fond of the Proximity grenades as well. Throw them somewhere, then pull an enemy and have them run through them all. They get blown up before they can even get close enough for their guns to be accurate.
I only have one Hyperion gun right now, and it does like 24 damage. I keep it around because it's so accurate and it's an automatic, so even though it's got low damage, I can chain 10 crits in a row and still drop the enemy pretty quickly. I'm also still only on my first playthrough >_> I'm only level 26 right now, and I just did the first two missions for Crazy Earl. The " Kill bandits and other things " one and the " get c-bomb, use them to blow shit up " one. I've very fond of my Volcano Sniper Rifle, because if there's a group of enemies near each other, I can shoot the ground in between them all, and it will usually set them all on fire and drop the whole group in a matter of seconds. |

Riotous Remedy is a life saver. You'll really notice it when/if you put more than 2 points into it.
Also, Relentless with 3+ points makes you ruin motherfuckers day. Revolvers and sniper rifles with recent fire rates will destroy shit every way from sunday with the speed boost. |
I still enjoy plugging away at Too Human every once in a while (killing 12000 airborne enemies to fill the quest for an Epic Graviton Pulse Charm is going to take a while), so Borderlands does pique my interest.
As for the various bugs, I am pleased to report that Gearbox is getting on the ball in terms of addressing them: according to this IGN article, a patch for the 360 version will be unleashed at 0200 CST; those for the PC and PS3 will be released 'eventually'. |
I've also found that the Hunter set is kind of limited, but you can power up you r bloodwing pretty nicely. It's saved my butt quite a few times. I feel the trick is putting most into rogue then going for cool down (Adding targets is wonderful). His other skills don't seem all that useful as aiming can be tricky sometimes it seems.
As with weapon Flynt(?) Drops a pretty nice shotgun but it goes right through the clip. Just another example really of potential ammo wasting. Anyone have a suggestion on a hunters best class mod type with a rogue spec? I find them all over the place and haven't really decided on a solo mod. Though Survivor's team health regen helps quite a bit. |
Debating how to build my Soldier as I truck along. I'm kind of hopping all over the place. I was doing the talent to buff overall bullet damage, but now I decided to stop that and work on the turret giving ammo regen. Might max it out. Never know when it might come in handy, particularly for weapons that use less ammo.
Speaking of which, I just killed Bonehead. Would be further, but I've been getting sidetracked with stuff lately (in life, that is). Loving this game still. I got the static assault rifle and fell in love with it. Then I found a rocket launcher. I mowed through Bonehead's men, but noticed my weapons weren't doing jack. Then I pulled out my "big gun". Mistah Launcher made short work of him. Just got a third weapon slot, and I think my big boom-boom gun will stay in that spot <3 |
Permanent bullet damage, Scorpio damage rate, Fitness, Aid Station and Cauterize are Soldier fundamentals. The rest is up to you.
|
Gotcha, chief :V I'll work on those first, then. Guessing that the shield regen perk is a must as well? It'd make Scorpio even handier.
|
Just started a new game with a Soldier and found the going a lot easier than as a hunter.
|
Quote:
Tons of strategies for the Soldier. So far, I've been using this (Still a level 43): Borderlands: Skill Tree And found this: Borderlands: Skill Tree As well as a multitude of combinations. I primarily play Single Player but with open invite. Thank god for Point Reset option in New-U terminals. |
Getting rid of some garbage on the PC version.
Instead of selling, figure you guys might want some of it, since you seem to be so very slow and low leveled. -CLASS MODS- -WEAPONS- Sorry, everything's gone. Given away the sniper to animechanic and everything else was just vendor trash anyway, so. :( |
Don't suppose anyone is lurking around looking for people to split the four-pack with?
|
I started up a Soldier this morning, got to New Haven. My turret hates me. I'm kind of wondering if I should pick up Stockpile, since I have a class mod later on that does the same thing only better and is always active. I kind of want to go pure support with him anyway though. If the turret didn't have such a giant cooldown it would be a bit easier on me since I wouldn't have to pick up the two skills to have a constant turret available at every battle.
edit: Oh yeah, 360 and PS3 (supposedly PS3, I know 360 got theirs already) got a patch to fix various things, one of which included the Siren's Phase Strike. It still apparently sucks balls when it really counts, but it's not as horrible as before. They fixed it by simply making her do an animation then exiting Phase Walk, as opposed to her exiting Phase Walk while meleeing. Seems it does maybe ~6k to equal level Badass/BadMotha/SuperBads, and ~22k to everything else. |
I just got this on PC, is anyone else suffering from a laggy mouse movement? The game itself runs perfectly respectable ~60fps, but the mouse movement (in menus, not when aiming) is really sluggish. Also, I it feels like the up/down movement is way faster than the sideways movement when aiming... I wish you could set the sensitivity of both axises. I'm glad I got it on PC though cause the game is pretty unforgiving when aiming. That would've frustrated the hell out of me if I had to do with the 360 controller.
Anyway, the game is totally great, but the Hunter is a useless pile of shit in my experience. It was my first choice to play with, because I thought I'd enjoy sniping (I enjoyed it in Far Cry 2). But it seems most enemies are clairvoyant and know where I am before I even get there, so most of my time was spent running backwards frantically trying to shoot guys through the head. Also, did that bird ever do anything for anybody else? I think I would've done more damage if the F was a flashlight. Anyway, restarted with Soldier now and it's really great. I love the setting and the style of the game, and I can't wait till I get more into the meat of it. I've specifically avoided reading any guides (which is why I chose that shitpile of a Hunter class, I guess), so I can discover my own way of playing without being influenced by other people's tactics. |
Disable mouse smoothing. Taco posted a fix on it earlier in the thread. It's like a whole new game without it.

Skills I want that blue volcano =o
I've been trying to find a good sniper rifle for a while now. Everything I get has nice damage but no elemental effects =/ |
I have that sniper rifle too. I just beat the game about 30 minutes ago ( I know, I'm slow ) and that rifle was still my main gun at the time I completed the final mission.
Probably going to start a second play through tomorrow, or just try out another character other than my hunter. I was thinking about Lilith, because in all the online games I've played in now, I've yet to see one of her >_> |
Quote:
Seems like that blue volcano sniper is fkn sweet for a level 20 gun, too. Awesome loot. Hunters are invaluable against the alien enemies, I noticed. That ability to ignore shields and straight-up rip out their health is a godsend. Seems like the gunslinger skill path generally kicks ass, too. Finished a second playthrough last night and the game kicks as much ass as it did when I first played it. Awesome times. |
Quote:
Totally been called by animechanic over steam several hours before you posted. :( I have a similar purple, a Vitriolic Sniper, that does Corrosive. I can get you that~ DVL450 Vitriolic Sniper [Level 25] |
Hey Bigblah, if you can host a match or get a hold of me and tell me what server to connect to, I can give you my Volcanic Sniper if you want it. It's a pretty good gun, but I'm willing to part with it now that I have a few more snipers that can hold me over until I pick up another +4 elemental damage sniper.
|
Quote:
I'm using a Soldier now and it's way easier than when I was a hunter. I seem to be getting way better drops, too. Like, I had a better sniper rifle on my soldier at level 17 than my hunter was able to get by level 21. =\ |
If people aren't comfortable with using that Tunngle thing Grawl posted a few pages back, my friend showed me a similar thing called GameRanger. It's the same virtual LAN concept, but you can limit people joining your room with passwords and a friends only option. Pretty easy to set up, too, and it's in English!
GameRanger - play your friends online |
Here's a different fix that works somewhat better on the eyes. Locate gd_globals.INT (resides in \WillowGame\Localization\INT\ of wherever your game will be installed, look in the Steam\steamapps\common\borderlands section for Steam users) Open with Notepad Replace AttributePresentationTranslation="$NUMBER$ $CONSTRAINT$ $DESCRIPTION$" with AttributePresentationTranslation="<font size="10">$NUMBER$ $CONSTRAINT$ $DESCRIPTION$</font>" http://imgur.com/GH3Tq.jpg There seems to be a hard-coded 5 mod limit for displaying though, as the zoom and critical damage increase are not showing, even if you open it up in debug console. You can change it to 14 size font then, as it will still allow 5 lines but make it somewhat easier on the eyes. http://imgur.com/x5KPW.jpg To think i almost threw that away. |
For anyone on the PC version, for some reason, booting the game today resets all your settings and ini tweaks. It's not the patch, so I dunno what the deal is.
So make a backup before booting, and then apply after doing so. I have to readjust everything now, how lame. :( |
Jesus Christ, even though it sucks having no one to play with, I'm glad I got it for the 360.
Booted the game up again today and, as expected, nothing bad happened. |

Who's bickering? I'm talking about relief that I don't have to deal with random shit happening to my file when I turn the game on. Skills is a friend of mine, and it sucks that he and everyone else have to deal with this crap.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, Deni. It's not a thinly veiled attack on anyone or anything-- except maybe Gearbox for how they've handled the PC version. |
The point Deni is making is that nothing happens to your game when you boot it up because nothing CAN happen to it because you cannot have possibly changed anything in the first place.
Skills' inconvenience derives from being temporarily reduced to a state from which you yourself cannot possibly escape. The PC version is bitched about primarily because it suffers from being mostly unchanged from the console version. I mean, I have to steer with the fucking mouse have we learned nothing from halo |

Nothing of any importance got updated though :( |

My relief is also in response to all the other shit that's been going wrong that people have been complaining about in this thread. |

It's pretty disappointing how the PC version has been fucked up though, for once I'm glad I didn't get the PC version of something. I'm pretty much done with the game (as in I've beaten it multiple times and have largely exhausted it's content), and they haven't fixed the main bug on consoles and the PC version is still a mess of workarounds that still don't work for some people -_-. |
They still haven't fixed that zero-point skill bug? Jesus fuck.
Shit, all I want to do is power-level my siren, hunter and Brick, but I guess I'll stick to 50 soldier for now. |
Quote:
Nah, I'll get the DLC, I guess I should rephrase that I'm pretty much done for right now. I've got a Level 50 Siren with 50 SMG Profiency, 4 x4 elemental scoped SMGs in each slot, with a high damage SMG Class Mod that regens ammo faster than I use it. I've messed around on a cleared 2nd playthrough for about 10 hours with her, and while I'm sure there's slightly to moderately better stuff available technically within the game, I so absolutely rape everything it's kinda eh. I've also got a lvl 40 Hunter on a 2nd playthrough, and a lower level Soldier and Berserker as well. I'm still down for multiplayer whenever though. |
How to see if there are more than 4 abilities on your piece of equipment?
More ini tweaks, that's how. Courtesy of GBX's official forums, and the people there who very diligent in searching through their shit. Gearbox Software Community - View Single Post - Way to see more than 4 bonuses per item? Basically, you can now get 5+ lines to an item. Not entirely sure if there are items with more than 5 lines. Some people in there are saying "yes I had some" but refused to post pictures, so I call shenanigans. Here's some looks with different font sizes though. http://i36.tinypic.com/2ir1ym9.jpg and http://i37.tinypic.com/5zi3jk.jpg One fella in the thread says it might be cool to just set elemental mods font sizes to 1, since the icon represents that information anyway, and then set the rest to size 8, which should allow for more lines should items ever get to that point. I like that idea and will play around with it later. |
One thing that me and a buddy have noticed while playing/farming New Haven for chests is that there seems to be another 'level' of sorts to weapons other than what is listed. He opened a chest in New Haven and two sniper rifles popped out, one that was clearly orange, the rarest of rare, and yet the other rifle had a yellow text to it, much akin to that BLR Bad Firehawk in the post above.
I'm not too entirely sure what it means or why they don't mention it in game, but if anyone knows what the difference is, or if yellow is just a step between purple and orange do let me know. |
There are two different levels of orange, light and dark orange, and one above that level altogether, called pearlescent, that's even less common.
|
Continuing on the font size issue that Taco's been posting about; it seems there is a hard-coded limit on the number of effect lines displayed for items, and that number is 5. Even when running debug mode, only 5 effects appear for the equipped weapon.
So, while you can set the text very tiny, there seems to be no real point until this next hurdle is overcome. For the moment I would recommend a font size of 14. It displays 5 lines of text perfectly, and isn't so small you have to squint every time you're equipping a weapon. |
The 5 lines on Class Mods for console is annoying, but also explains how my sweetass Class Mod started giving me regen ammo for no particular reason.
Also I thought it'd already been posted as it's days old now, but pure "white"/pearlescent drops have been a confirmed glitch by Gearbox. I forget the exact explanation, but it's when some combination of things on the weapon cause the rarity scale to implode and fail. This is why all of the Pearlescent drops people were finding (including myself) were all total shit weapons. Dark Orange is as high as it goes, which sucks :( |

You consider Ammo Regen, Zoom rate and Crit Damage % useless? o_O
|
http://profile.imageshack.us/user/fa...pearlsnip2.jpg
Doesn't seem exactly useless. Not really, like...the greatest shit I've ever seen but y'know. |
I dunno about them, but Zoom Rate and Crit Damage % are crucial to know for me... Ammo Regen... While it's nice, I hardly ever notice it.. Then again, the only gun I have that eats ammo ( That I use regularly of course ) is my x3 explosive SMG, and I only use that from time to time, so usually I'm only down about 400 ammo and just restock each time I get to a new munitions vendor.
|
Quote:
Zoom I'm kind of indifferent about since 180% Bullet Velocity on Lilith means I'm almost never going to have any delay between firing the shot and hitting the target. I'll give you Crit Damage %. |

Holy crap, going through Old Haven now and the game suddenly got a million times better. Loot's way nicer and enemies are actually putting up a fight.
|
Game actually seems to be easier on my second time through. Almost finishing my second playthrough with my soldier and hit level 50 around Old Haven.
Also a little disappointed how infrequently I find new weapons which replace what I'm using. For the entire second playthrough I've relied upon an assault rifle with +2 to fire, ~93 accuracy, a decent sized clip, scope, and bursts of 5 shots. It does a lot less raw damage than many other guns I've found, but its accuracy and rate of fire has made it untouchable by anything else this whole game. With around level 35 assault rifle and level 4 of the assault skill I don't even use my sniper rifle anymore. :( |
From 29 to about 42 I had a rocket launcher I couldn't find an improvement on, and for 32 to 45 the deal was the same for a sniper.
When you start getting red text stuff, that usually outdoes the increase in raw damage you'll get from higher level stuff. |
With the latest PC patch that hit, for those who edited the .ini files to force the font smaller to see more lines, to enable vsync, AA and the FOV settings, will I have to retweak it now?
|
Got this game from a friend the other day, pretty awesome so far... I have a level 16 Soldier, but I'm struggling to find some decent weapons... Or at least finding a decent shotgun...
|
16? If you've not found Sledge yet you must be close, and with any luck his shotty will carry you for a good long while.
(hint: Sledge doesn't know how to open doors) Quote:
|
When was this? my ini files have not been altered recently.
Do you mean when daylight savings hit? That wasn't a PC patch. |
You know, I started the game thinking that I'd play the soldier as a support class, but I've really fallen in love with the Siren playstyle and drawing aggro away from other members.
I just don't understand why they made one of the Soldier's class weapons a shotgun. It seems like he's not really a "get up in your face" kinda guy like the berserker. |

PC OFFICIAL UPDATE 11/16 - update notes and links! - Gearbox Software Community |
Well, fuck me sideways, I must have missed that post.
Shows how much attention I was paying. :( |
Quote:
Also, how long is the first playthrough anyway? |
Got about 30 hours or so out of Playthrough 1 myself, though I'm the kind of spaz that absolutely has to do every single sidequest.
|
I noticed that my mouse sensitivity and screen brightness settings were reverted to normal. A quick look at the .ini shows that mouse smoothing is still off, so I'm not sure what all tweaks will have to be re-applied.
|
I never really found shotguns all that useful, I have to say. Generally they'll either have really high damage but horrid accuracy and shot speed, or be pretty accurate and have a decent rate of fire, but not put out enough damage. I mean, sure the shotguns I find do something like 150x7 damage, but they only fire one round a second with ~60 accuracy, but I can also find automatic rifles with 200+ damage, 10+ rounds a second, and accuracy over 88. That means I can use it for both intermediate range as well as close range.
Debating now if I want to give the siren or brick a shot. I figure my play style will probably be similar enough with both of them as with the hunter and soldier, so I don't know if it'll be worth doing since I'm probably going to wind up playing the whole thing solo anyway. =\ I did have a four player game the other day with some buddies from Left 4 Dead and have to say it was really rad. The increased difficulty and extra tactics you get from having to deal with weak points on enemies and whatnot really makes it more interesting. Wish more of you guys played in the early AM hours. |
Just a heads-up.
To those who have the game on 360, the Zombie Island expansion is now available. At least 50 new quests/missions and 5 new achievements, bringing the total to 1125. PS3 owners, I would imagine it's either available today, or it will be available on Thursday (Turkey Day). For PC version owners, no date announced yet, but it has been confirmed for release. |
Zombie Island just came out for the PC today with a $10 price tag. I saw on the Steam page this one also has SecureROM on it, so you can only activate the expansion five times.
I don't know if I'll be buying it or not. I've finished the game twice with my soldier, just finished it the first time through with Lilith and got most of the way through with my hunter. Additional Spam: Cool, apparently the patch they put out this morning may install SecurROM on Steam versions of Borderlands that don't even have the DLC: NeoGAF - View Single Post - Borderlands | The Official Thread - More guns than the population of the Netherlands |
And here comes another one!!
Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, the second expansion for Borderlands, is now availaboe on Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 MSP. PS3 owners either get it today or Thursday, not really sure, what with the holidays and all that. For the achievement hunters out there, there are 5 new ones, bringing the total to 1250. Part of me is anxious to play it when I get home, but at the same time, I heard if you leave at any point before completing all 3 challenges, or whatever it is, you would have to start over. Again, this is a rumor, so don't quote me on it. |
I decided to pick this one up in the sales (on 360) so if there's anyone about in a few days time (I'll be back home on Friday at some point) and fancies doing some co-op then give me a shout.
|
Hit me up sometime, OP. I'm usually down for some bordering of lands, and I still need to get the achievements for being a Soldier and Berserker if I had to make a new character for you.

Nutty, Yeldarb, and Zeroslash/RealPT1 also have it, and we've all got that viral achievement for playing with a Gearbox employee thanks to Zero. We should be able to assemble a team pretty easily.
|
Yeah, apparently, the checkpoints are after every 5 ROUNDS, which means 25 waves. Basically meaning this: if you lose on let's say, Round 8, you have to start at Round 6, from what I've read.
This is definitely not an easy expansion compared to Zombie Island. |
I recently bought Borderlands, and unfortunately none of my friends have it. I dunno if it's just me but it seems extremely hollow in single player. I'd be very interested in joining some of you in co-oping it if you don't mind. The only problem is, I'm in Australia so I reckon time zones may clash but maybe we can work something out.

Coincidentally, I started playing Torchlight just before Borderlands. I found that pretty compelling from the start but Borderlands...not so much. It just seems like it was designed with multiplayer in mind.

So have any of you PC players been having this problem?
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...erlandsGPF.gif Sometimes I can play for a couple hours or so with no issues, other times I can't go more than ten minutes. Once I didn't even make it to the title screen. Also, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Borderlands, and since then I can't use my Zombie Island DLC anymore. I go to the Jakob's Cove loading screen and it asks me to activate it with the serial number. When I do it the progress bar goes to 30% and stops, giving me an error asking me to make sure my serial number is entered right. It's impossible that it's not because I copied it to the clipboard through Steam. Whether I hit retry or manual, the game crashes and I get that error. I've tried using the DLCSetup in the Steam folder, and it acts like it works, but nothing changes. Any suggestions? |
I've not experienced that, but back up your save files, delete the local content, and try re-downloading the game.
|
Tried that. Twice, in fact. I've tried compatibility mode, running as admin, reinstalling drivers, I've even heard windowed mode helps, but it's all the same.
|
Did you buy the DLC?
|
Yes, I did. Probably my first mistake. secuROM ruins everything.
|
Don't worry, it's on your computer even if you didn't buy the DLC!
|
Just when I thought I was done with Borderlands it seems they're going to be pulling ne right back in again soon. There's new DLC on the way and it's going to increase the level cap. Gearbox have apparently said that this is the biggest DLC they've done to date. If it's as fun as the existing DLC (and avoids Moxxi's crazy time requirement) then I'm 100% sold.
|
You can definitely count me in if it's something with a story like Zombie Island. Mad Moxxie didn't interest me at all, but Dr. Ned was some of the best DLC ever.

Perhaps something on top of just cranking up HP numbers to make a game more challenging is what he was hoping for.

Well, this is quite a surprise. Out of nowhere, Gearbox and 2K have announced on Monday that the 3rd expansion for Borderlands, titled "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx", will be available THIS WEEK!!
Tomorrow, to be more precise, for Xbox 360 and Thursday for Playstation 3. PC version, not 100% sure, since I don't own it on PC, but I'm sure it's coming soon for those who do have it. It was actually supposed to be released today on Xbox Live, but a slight delay (no surprise, here) set it back a mere 24 hours. Honestly, no harm, no foul for me in the extra day's wait. However, I am getting a good laugh out of the mass on x360a who are going nuts about having to wait, especially those that were dumb enough to say they were skipping school and calling in sick from work to play it. |
Ahahahaha owned so bad, now they have to work on the day it comes out
|
The PC release is going to be out the same day as the PS3 version.
Regrettably, the 1.30 patch also seems to eliminate hacked/invalid weapons. :( |
Got it today, and have got as far as freeing the assassin from the jail. So far it's great, however it is goddamn hard.
Even though I lost my modded RIDICULOUS weapons to the new patch, I created a damn near perfect LEGAL set of items before the patch, which it let me keep. However, it's still really hard ._. Maybe it's the new levels, I'm still 52 and some of the enemies it's having me fight are 55. Guess I'll level up and try some more. |
I find it pretty easy, though probably because I'm going at it on 1st playthrough (I want to see what happens if I'm already at lvl50 when I start the second playthrough). The most problem I had so far was because I got stuck in a few playces, had to reset, and drive back through those boring as fuck highways. They really should've added a couple more fast travel locations.
Spoiler:
There's also this: http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/608...t00000e.th.png And there's an actual location titled "secret final boss here", though it does nothing, so far. Probably a mission location unlocked later on. |
So overall, the new DLC is fucking awesome.
-Bunch of new enemy types and variants that are actually somewhat interesting. The loot midgets and midgets riding skags is hilarious. -New loot; I haven't gotten any Pearlescents, but I got a really good Gearbox SMG, and I upgraded everything else I had that I entered it with (and I had basically top of the line shit when I came in) -Characters and story are great. Was really surprised at the amount of new dialogue and story, there's some fantastic fucking lines. Overall I'd consider the DLC script to be superior to anything in the main game. ENGORGE -There is quite literally a treasure chest heaven. -Addition of a new super uber boss that can be re-farmed for (at least in theory) the best gear in the game. I feel there's only two major things that are negatives, that prevent this from being the best DLC bar none: -The cars and driving in general in Borderlands is still kinda broken. And the DLC is HUGE, but it basically requires you to drive a bunch, and there's some really cheap deaths you will die in your car. It doesn't forgive it, but once you've done it for a while and learned the enemy patterns, you can safely take shit out without being hit, or oftentimes just completely (and safely) blow past everything. I did probably die something like 10 times in a car, but 7 or 8 of those were like in the first 2 hours :/ -There's STILL no god damn teleports in the DLC outside of the one at the start. It was annoying as hell in the Zombie Island DLC, but it's 10 times worse here considering how long you have to drive to get to certain places. Hell, if there was a teleport in every area it'd probably wipe my other complaint out as well. No idea what the fuck they're doing with not having them. Overall it's still fucking fantastic, and you should hands-down get it if you have the game. I went in as a 50 on playthrough 2.5 and didn't have a whole ton of problems (aside from the bullshit car deaths early on), you just can't go rush into a bunch of dudes like you've probably gotten used to. Doing it solo on playthrough 2.5, doing all of the DLC probably took me about 12 or so hours, which is pretty damn impressive, especially for $10. Also the "Secret Final Boss" is a quest that opens up after you've beaten the main DLC quest, and he will rape your face. Unless you're a Siren you HAVE to do it with a full group. If you're attempting to do it solo there's one or two small exploits you can do, but it's still fucking madness. To give you an idea, I went in with a 61 Siren with pimped out gear, and even using an exploit to get it down to about 15% health, it still took me about 20 deaths to kill it and it was about the most frustrating thing I've ever done (I went from losing 26 million a death to $13 million). Thing is obviously meant for group play, practically everything in there will one-shot you. It would actually be kinda neat to go back and farm him with a group, but I've got no one else to do that with at the moment :/. |
I've got the new DLC and I'm very keen to get into it now, but I'm planning to play it with GB and Tritoch so that we're all at the same place (starting the main game with guys who had already beaten it and who would just run off whilst I was still trying to figure shit out was annoying as hell and so I don't want that again). But once I'm done I'll be down for playing it with you Daravon.

Knox is one cheerful dude though, I give it that. I'm only storming the armory right now, so I'm about half way through. |
Also, to note, there is this a "glitch" that allow almost limitless farming of the armory itself with no time limits.
I put that in quotes because there is no fucking way it was an accident. Spoiler:
Of course you still have to do all the fucking traveling and kill Knoxx every time. |

OK, I finally got to Crawmerax. All I can say is, this is what we deserve for bitching that the game is too easy. I wonder if it's possible to solo him with anything but a Siren.
There are a bunch of secret missions too. One of them has you scavenge for loot buried under the sand. On the Road's End level, check the cavern system that starts right below the gondola ride. There is an abandoned house there, where you can find a Radar for the lancer, use it to find 5 Crimson Lance stashes hidden in the map. There are two others I haven't checked yet, they involve a midget and a frankenstein style reanimated Sledge. The latter gives you a ridiculously pimped up machinegun. It supposedly has 15+ fire rate, 500+ magazine size (!!!!!), and it shoots 4 bullets like the Double Anarchy. That's just plain crazy DPS, and you barely have to reload it. As I'm currently playing as Roland, that machinegun will allow me to rape almost anything. Add a c-mod with rapid ammo regen, and that means I can regen half my total ammo by the time that thing chewed it all up. |
Motorhead is ridiculously easy to kill. I don't remember him dropping anything anywhere near that good though. I don't use machineguns at all, but if I'd seen anything that good I would have kept it for my friend. On the other hand he is repeatable, so maybe it's just something he drops sometimes.

Yeah, I had to re-spawn him for almost two hours before he dropper the Chopper. It takes maybe five entire seconds to kill him even with crap gear - set him on fire, and he will immolate on the spot.
I'm not quite sure if the Chopper has any practical use, though. It has absurd rate of fire, chews up your ENTIRE ammo stockpile (with max upgrade) in about 10 seconds. With my Support Gunner Roland, the magazine size itself is bigger than the amount of ammo you can carry. It has relatively low damage per shot, but it still comes out as high DPS because of the firing rate. The accuracy makes it kind of worthless unless you are up-close - it spreads bullets so crazily that half your bullets will probably miss Rakk Hive if you are standing on that safe platform. You need to use it up-close to hit anything. The crazy DPS could easily cause stun on most bosses though, so I guess it's useful in a kamikaze let's-go-all-out way, against bosses or when you are overwhelmed. |
Finally killed crawmerax with a bunch of friends. Christ that bastard is hard. Didn't drop any pearlescent weapons either :(, though some sexy orange ones.
I think I'm gonna look for a trainer or something, make it more fun. I have some problem with my quests too, everyone else I know has got a quest from the bounty board in T Bone to destroy the probes/sentinals whatever in town, but I can't get the quest =s |
This game has been balls fucking hard since I got it last night. I don't know if I'm just rusty, or if Roland absolutely sucks for single play, but all in all most the people I played with back when it came out don't touch the game anymore.
That being said, if anyone has a level 50/51 that wants to run through it again, add Grail-ums to that friends list of yours. I want to do a 4 man group but, it's surprisingly hard to come across people in this game. |
Roland is... not the greatest for solo play, but he's not the worst, either. You should be making the most of his turret when alone. Ammo regeneration, Medic, and Cauterize make him a beast in team play, though.
Some of us still play the DLC, so there's a pretty consistent group here. |
I've learned that bullet resistance doesn't do jack shit. I still die in about 3 bullet shots after my shield is eaten in 2.
Either way I also have a level 44 siren that I'm going to run through the zombie island portion. Though with Roland I do have a mod that has a HUUUUUUUGE ammo regeneration for team members. We're talking at least one round a second, if not more. I should be apart of the gamingforce club so shoot me a message anyone. |
Grit only adds some ridiculously low bullet resistance, so you won't notice it when you die in 5 shots. In solo play, Roland is basically infinite ammo guy. Brick is iddqd doomguy, Lillith is kill-them-before-they-react, and Mordecai is, uh... I dunno?
|
I've got a lvl 23 Siren, thinking about reinstalling this today and actually trying to finish it.

Then again, sniper rifles. Really, with Mordecai? Pistols/revolvers. |
