Is your mom...

Your facebook friend?

http://www.geekologie.com/2009/09/10/facebook-mom-1.jpg

I haven't had my mom stalking me on facebook yet, although she is my friend.

But my relatives like to stalk my photos. When I take a suggestive photo with a girl, they'd always gossip about it as though its like WOW MEGA HEADLINES. Irritates me A LOT

Paco Sep 26, 2009 12:19 PM

My mom is dead and this thread sucks. I'm giving it one page to improve before I drop it like a fumble.

Krelian Sep 26, 2009 12:40 PM

No but SHE USES THE FACEBOOK although if she ever ADDS ME AS A FRIEND I will probably NOT ACCEPT

I'm totally cool with my zombie-mom following me on Facebook.

Chaotic Sep 26, 2009 02:25 PM

I actually have a bunch of my family on Facebook. They don't normally seem to interfere with whatever I do, mainly because it's none of their business anyway. They respect mine, I respect theirs. Any family I do friend, however, I'm usually alright with telling them just about anything anyway. Otherwise, the family I do friend on there on the site is family I normally don't see too often, mainly because they don't live here in the US.

However, neither of my parents have Facebook. They can't be bothered to get one since they have better things to do than pester me on a website anyway.

Sousuke Sep 26, 2009 02:32 PM

Pretty much what Chaotic said. I have some family on my Facebook [my mom included], but really only the ones I talk to regularly. Mostly my cousins.

Jessykins Sep 26, 2009 02:43 PM

My mother died before Facebook existed. So, yes.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Sep 26, 2009 03:01 PM

My aunt tried to add me. Denied that shit so fast.

Bernard Black Sep 26, 2009 03:10 PM

My mum hasn't got a facebook account, she doesn't really see the point in the whole thing since no one she speaks to on a regular basis has one either. I've got my brothers added though, and one of my cousins.

Kaleb.G Sep 26, 2009 03:13 PM

I have family on Facebook. I don't care what they see me talking about though. If they don't like it, tough shit.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Sep 26, 2009 03:22 PM

I make it a point not to add family on Facebook. A few have found me, and they were denied, but most don't even bother to attempt it.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Sep 26, 2009 03:30 PM

I've got over half my extended family befriended on Facebook. Father, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins. We're spread out from Arizona to Minnesota to D.C. to Texas to Maine, so it's genuinely nice to have a method of contact.

Discretion is the key. Facebook is a horrible place to advertise sensitive information in the first place, let alone to your family. So if you're drunk and pissed yourself, or just unexpectedly fucked a really hot chick, keep it to yourself. Most of the time, even your friends don't want to know that shit.

Also, my mom is dead. Thanks a lot, jerkoff.

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 26, 2009 03:39 PM

While it seems awkward to have your parents as your friends on Facebook, it's even weirder when they go around friending all of your friends too. The mother of a guy I knew in high school shares something like 11 mutual friends with me.

Also, I'm calling shenanigans on that poll. At least four other people in this thread have zombie moms.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Sep 26, 2009 03:42 PM

Well, there weren't always four options.

Paco could've fixed that himself, but oh well

The Plane Is A Tiger Sep 26, 2009 03:44 PM

Sorry, for a moment there I actually forgot that Paco's a lazy Mexican. I figured he fixed it back at the second post.

Too soon =(

My mom is pretty horrendous with computers and doesn't use the internet beyond checking email and watching Korean dramas.

I wasn't even cool with her following me around when she was still alive. Why would I want zombie mom all up in mah bizznezz?

I poked it and it made a sad sound Sep 26, 2009 06:52 PM

My father hates the idea of any internet social networking, but my mom has Facebook. She has no idea how to use it, but she has it to see all the pictures I post of whateverthefuck.

My sister and some relatives in France also have it. My sister is living overseas, so Facebook is a really great way for her and I to keep in touch as well.

russ Sep 26, 2009 06:57 PM

I don't have my mom added, but I do have several of your moms added.

THIEF Sep 26, 2009 06:58 PM

Oh russ u.

Trying to capture a cougar. I prefer a puma or an exotic lynx.

Sarag Sep 26, 2009 06:59 PM

I am a lot more comfortable knowing that my mom knows nothing about my internet life, such as it is. I really don't like knowing about hers.

Arkhangelsk Sep 26, 2009 07:41 PM

My parents think that facebook is rather stupid/pointless, and I'm glad for that.

A part of me always worries, though, that when I mention to her that "so-and-so's mom added me on facebook" that at some point she's going to be inspired to get one herself. Even though she'll have absolutely no idea how to use it, and we'd probably get in a huge fight if I tried to explain it to her.

I do have extended family on there, mostly cousins, because if we didn't keep in touch that way we might never talk to each other; most of them I see once every year, if I'm lucky. And about 10 of my friends' moms are my friends, as are some of my professors. Talk about awkward...

This.

Musharraf Sep 27, 2009 06:24 AM

I have an agreement with my parents that they use Myspace and I use Facebook.

SuperNova Sep 27, 2009 06:45 AM

I don't even use Facebook, let alone my mom. She barely knows how to open a program. Sure I have the profile there, but it's basically blank, and I leave it there so my fiancee can link it so that our profiles say we're engaged.

I have just recently started getting friend requests from aunts and whatnot, and when I see them I just tell them that I really don't use it... at all.

That said, my fiancee's mother uses it, and has tried to friend request me, and I told her I can't let her be exposed to my wild side, so I keep denying her requests. No, seriously, I do. It's funny. :P

ExoXile Sep 28, 2009 07:30 PM

Yes.

She is incapable of comprehending the basics of facebook, however, so it's all right.

Single Elbow Sep 28, 2009 07:33 PM

I don't have Facebook.

My mother doesn't care about shit like that. All that matters to her is her email.

Furby Sep 29, 2009 03:52 AM

Honestly.. It's reasons like this that I'm glad my parents are computer illiterate. Man if they saw the photos I got up on my myspace, facebook, etc etc.. they would kill me.

Way to give them the short end of the stick =p. Seems the only ones using Myspace nowadays are 12. But I could be wrong as I am not on Myspace and base my opinion solely on unfounded rumors and speculation :D

I don't add my parents more out of principle than actually worrying what they would see. I love both my parents, there's just something very adolescent about facebook. The types of things I put up on facebook are the types of things I probably wouldn't chat to them about, so it just seems out of place. I wouldn't be ashamed or anything if they saw my pictures, they'd probably laugh more than anyone at them anyway. That said, I do have my sister on facebook and that's great fun! Seriously, we yell at each other all the time! Good way to indirectly keep a foot in family affairs while I'm out of the country.

Put Balls Sep 29, 2009 05:01 AM

My parents don't use Facebook, nor does most of my family, extended. Cousins I have added as friends there, but mostly because I would rarely talk to them otherwise.

BUT, I've made a few of my photo albums available for everyone browsing, even people not registered, mostly for my parents. I handpick (=censor) the photos slightly, but I'd do that even without knowing my parents are watching. It's common sense. I have far more "delicate" people as friends than my parents so I don't have to worry about them. And I don't really care that much what people think of my actions based solely on such trivial things as Facebook and the photos there.

bluesy violin Sep 29, 2009 09:44 AM

One irritating incident:
I typed "I'm feeling emo today. /wrist" in "What's on your mind?" on Facebook.
Like all normal young person, that's just something I put there for self-expression, for fun.

This relative of mine got so worried, she mobilized like 5 other people and tried to talk to me. Really retarded.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 29, 2009 03:42 PM

Oh my, no. My suicidal status updates would not go over well if my parents were able to see them.

ziggythecat Sep 29, 2009 05:40 PM

my mom is 65. she's old enough to realize that most of the stuff i post on facebook is bs and even if she realizes that it isn't, she doesn't care. She's more worried about my little brother and her hip. Which has just recently been replaced with very few complications, Praise Jebus. That's both hips now. She's bionic!

The Wise Vivi Oct 18, 2009 09:47 AM

My parents rarely touch a computer, so a facebook account would be the LAST thing on their mind... THANK GOD... it would be so creepy to have her as a friend on my facebook... its bad enough she has an email account to send messages to me...

Timberwolf8889 Oct 18, 2009 12:39 PM

That's a bit harsh, don't you think? I mean, can you blame your parents for wanting to keep in touch with the thing they plopped out and spent a ton of money on and probably have some vague attachment to? Plus, if you really don't get along with your parents you can always ignore e-mails.

The Wise Vivi Oct 18, 2009 12:43 PM

I was being a bit harsh. ;) I get along with them fine. Emails are ok. When I was in Europe, it was nice to be able to email them. However, Facebook is still a no-no... they wouldn't know how to use it anyway... like most older people living in the middle of nowhere.

AtomicDuck Oct 26, 2009 08:08 PM

Everyone in my family is on my Facebook page. The way I see it, when your mom's your Facebook friend it works even better than electroshock therapy at keeping yourself in check =P

Angelus T48 Oct 26, 2009 08:13 PM

Ummm... no. Not Mom. Not Dad. Not any of my brothers or sisters. No. Don't think so. NEVER!!!!!

Why the fuck would I let any of them in my head anyways?

Put Balls Oct 27, 2009 04:29 AM

If you blurb the innermost of your head out on facebook, you've got some delusions.

PROTIP: No one cares.

Zergrinch Oct 27, 2009 04:32 AM

To answer the OP, yes.

I don't post anything online which I wouldn't dare shout out loud, or stick to a bulletin board anyhoo :p

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Oct 27, 2009 06:11 AM

If my mom ever figured out how to use the internet for Facebook purposes I would be shocked to say the least.

If my mom was my friend and said corny things all over the place I wouldn't mind. I'm not trying to impress anyone on Facebook, to be honest I don't even know why I have a Facebook, it's not really useful.

No. Just mainly common knowledge but that's not the point.

By head, I mean my bubble. Doesn't matter what the fuck I say. I'm not for spilling out my private life everywhere or anything like that.

1: I doubt my family cares anyways. They have their own lives and they live them the way they do. I doubt they want me as a facebook friend either.

2: I only have a facebook account to keep track of a few people that I don't want to lose contact with as they were really hard to track down.

Pretty much this, for me. My parents are fairly computer illiterate anyway; my mom does know OF facebook, and i think asked me once if I use it (I said occasionally, which is the truth) but that's about it.

Malmer Oct 28, 2009 04:19 AM

Each and every single person in my family is on facebook.
That is except my one living grandfather and me. We're so awesome.

That doesn't keep my mother from asking me how to do this or that on facebook though (me being the family tech support guy and all).
Answer doesn't change much. I don't know. I don't care.

Jarf'd Oct 28, 2009 01:27 PM

Yes... I was against it in the beginning because I thought it was weird. When I moved out into my own place though my mom was being a typical mom so i finally caved. I get along fine with her and she knows that I have my own life. It's just a way for her to contact me which i check more regularly than E-mail.

She's the only of my family on Facebook though ... That I know of...

As others said too Facebook isn't much for private thoughts. Just fun things that go on and contact people sometimes.

scarlet Nov 4, 2009 12:16 PM

I voted for yes! My mom and I are facebook friend. My mom and I are super close to the extent that she knows all my secrets and stuff. Although it's kinda embarrassing but she knew everything like all about my boyfriend and crazy stuff that I'm doing. Although she doesn't tolerate me, She says that i need to do crazy stuff and mistakes to learn more about life. And, She's absolutely right. I guess mother really knows best. My mom is the coolest mom in the world.;)

UltimaIchijouji Nov 4, 2009 12:53 PM

Yes, but all my family is in a limited profile so I can pick and choose what they see.

Magi Nov 5, 2009 02:49 AM

I don't use face book yet, unfortunately. Although I have pretty good reason that the rest of my family... and my extended family are on it. This might be one of those instance where I am slower to adopt to certain new technology then my parents are. >.>; Although I am just having hard time keeping track of stuff like this.

Sian Nov 6, 2009 08:41 AM

No, and I am sure that if my parents ever did sign up to facebook they'd use the name "SianMum/Dad" type thing JUST to piss me off. They don't see the point of it, and aren't computer literate enough to keep up.

I have my best friends Mum as a friend though...I felt rude to deny her since she lets me stay in her house for weeks on end!

i am good at jokes Nov 6, 2009 12:10 PM

If I did have a facebook account, she probably would be.

I don't really hide much of anything from my parents (or the rest of my family for that matter), and I take every chance I have to interact with them, what with being about a thousand kilometers away from them. I know all of my brothers have an account, and so does my mother.

My dad is probably the only other member of my immediate family who doesn't have an account, as he doesn't even have an email account outside work, He just relays messages through my mom if he's at home and needs to send out information to my brothers and me or someone else.

Sian Nov 10, 2009 06:13 AM

God dammit, as soon as I posted on here she goes and joins facebook! I accepted her, because I know the woman will probably get confused with the layout and flee for her life. I didn't hesistate to make a wall post telling her of her hypocrisy, since she always blamed any computer failure on me for going on facebook -_-

Little Yuna Nov 16, 2009 05:48 PM

haha Sian, my moms been on facebook for awhile and still doesnt understand how to use it.=p
Yeah, I have my mother on facebook. The worst she does is stalk my status' so it doesnt bother me. Im sure it would be awkward if she was while I was still living at home.^^;

Izlude Nov 17, 2009 09:45 AM

I'm friends with both of my parents on Facebook. Helps keep my idiot friends in check; they're much less likely to post horrific insults on my wall.

You know, I felt guilty about that "is that what your mommy tells you" comment.

Now I see that I am justified in feeling guilty. :(
