Hi,

And an updated version of the same trailer, shown at E3 2009:

If Team ICO's next game is relevant to your interests, you've come to the right place to watch the (leaked?) first video of it:

Game ending spoilers: Gryphoncat dies. You cry.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 19, 2009 08:25 PM

That thing is like a colossus, and I am not killing it. That makes me sad.

We'll see how this turns out. I'd like a bit more action than what was shown, though. A boy and his gryphonratcatlemur could be promising.

Bloodcinder May 19, 2009 08:36 PM

I think there's something so magical about that series... Of course I'll have to experience this.

Rockgamer May 19, 2009 08:39 PM

On the surface it looks like Ico, except they replaced Yorda with a colossus, but there's probably more to it than that. Hopefully since this trailer is ready it means we'll see more at E3, but regardless I can't imagine not seeing something about it sometime this year.

Kairi Li May 19, 2009 09:01 PM

Best news I've heard all month.

It's like a combination of ICO and Colossus, which is interesting.

Hopefully there will be more info at E3.

Hantei May 19, 2009 11:23 PM

Great looking environments, especially the sunset, as expected, though I was expecting better looking character models. Liking the music, I wonder if Kow Otani is back for the soundtrack. Hopefully the trailer will get a release on the PSN. What if this ends up like the nico trailer, where the final product is nothing like it, eg. this is basically a concept trailer.

Maybe there'll be colossus vs colossus like fights.

Haha, I'd be surprised if something tragic doesn't happen in this game.

NovaX May 20, 2009 12:09 AM

The game looks amazing apart from the kid's face. What the hell went wrong there?

Pretty much this. Stunningly realistic-looking catgryfon thing, followed by a kid that looks like he walked out of Toy Story. Kind of jarring. Here's hoping that's a placeholder or something.

Paco May 20, 2009 02:28 AM

Holy shit, Qwarky is gonna shit a two-ton brick when he sees this.

Or maybe he'll just say that it's going to suck and still say ICO reigns supreme; which it does. Either way, I'm really liking that trailer although I'm not really digging that name. Hopefully we'll see more of how this will pan out in the next few months.

Well, this should be a year old build, so I guess they wanted to make the ratcat more realistic and cute as fuck.
I want to play this, NOW.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 20, 2009 04:58 AM

I thought it looked more like a puppy than a cat. Anyway, hanging onto things mechanic from SotC meets leading dumb creatures around mechanic from Ico pretty much equals win in my book. This might well become another reason for me to get a PS3 (And play Ico properly).

Since people are saying this is a leaked internal trailer that's over a year old, the models are probably better now. Though I like them as they are, it kind of looks like a Sega Saturn or Dreamcast game with much more detail and in high resolution. If it's a deliberate stylistic choice, I'd be okay with that.

The music is apparently a placeholder from the movie Miller's Crossing.

I don't think Trico is the actual name, it's likely (hopefully) just a working title, like Shadow of the Colossus was called Nico.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 20, 2009 05:49 AM

Of course it's a placeholder name. N(ew)Ico and now Tr(iple)Ico.

It'll probably end up being called Kid From Mysterious Cities of Gold Rides Around On A Giant Winged Puppy Thing Not Saying Much (Everybody Dies At The End) or something.

Yeah, obviously. Plus "Ni" is "two" in Japanese, so the second one was almost literally called Ico 2 (in a punny kind of way) until it got a real name. No way to know what this one will be called, but damn having a giant flying beastie for a steed looks fun.

Oh hey. I wasn't the only one who saw the kid from Mysterious Cities of Gold in that kid... :D

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 20, 2009 06:09 AM

Yeah, I think that character definitely hints at an Incan or Mayan theme to the game, especialyl with some of the architecture looking a bit lost temple-ish.

Shenlon May 20, 2009 07:23 AM

Obviously trico isn't the real name and thats kid's face isn't the real face since they like to release trailers of early builds for some reason. Nonetheless, this looks fucking awesome already. Loved Ico, loved colossus, they can make that bird shit white crap the entire game for all i care and if it still delivers in gameplay and story I'd be entertained

Gechmir May 20, 2009 07:30 AM

Loved the music in the trailer. Catgryphon <3 ;_;

Made me frown when I saw the dozens of arrows stuck in it. This is gonna be fucking incredible.

Marco May 20, 2009 08:19 AM

I wonder how that cat will influence gameplay. I hope thye don't add bullshit stealth-elements for all the parts in which the cat isn't present.

Put Balls May 20, 2009 08:32 AM

I almost cried like a little girl when watching this. The game is going to be the best (or second best or third best) thing ever.

So cute. ;_; THE CREATURE CANNOT DIE, IT CAN'T.

I'll have to start savin' up for a console. I'll just play it at my parents' house, since they have the huge tv it requires (SotC was awesome on it, anyway).

So far they've made a platformy puzzly game where you lead a girl around and hit shadows with a stick and what's essentially a platform game where you ride around the open plains on a horse then hang off the back of massive monsters before stabbing them in the head until they die.

I'd say the chances of them deciding to now make a stealth game are pretty slim, especially given that the trailer looks designed to show you that this is a combination of the two previous ones in that you lead the puppy/cat/mouse thing around by feeding it and have to hang onto it when it's running or swimming around.

But gosh, I hope they don't add some bullshit dance mat bit for the bits when there's music playing.

Gechmir May 20, 2009 08:49 AM

If memory serves, isn't lame-o, awkward stealth elements in otherwise action/adventure games largely a Western thing? :V It's Team ICO. Things'll be okay :3:

Marco May 20, 2009 10:23 AM

that's just usually what happens when you have a game centered on two wildly different characters, the gameplay is divided in two different veins bases on which dungeon or part of the game you are following. often when it is the weaker of the two they will add some bullshit half-assed stealth. we'll see, maybe it will all be cat action and it'll be dandy

but that's fucking hilarious shin

ComradeTande May 20, 2009 11:23 AM

A boy and his outrageously cute cat gryphon friend with cut wings.

If anything tragic happens to them, I am sure to bawl like a baby.

Put Balls May 20, 2009 11:36 AM

Maybe it's a dragon baby. I hope no one's watched The Water Horse. :tpg: I hope Team Ico hasn't watched The Water Horse.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 20, 2009 12:02 PM

It looks kinda furry though, like a luck dragon!

http://www.alicia-logic.com/capsimag..._044Falkor.jpg

A Neverending Story game would pretty much be the best thing ever.

FatsDomino May 20, 2009 12:20 PM

Great. Now I absolutely have to get a PS3. I must have this game.

See, I didn't know that's what Shadow of the Colossus was called when it was in development. I just remember Qwarky waxing lyrical about how awesome ICO was for eons and finally decided to rent it just to play it before Shadow came out. Either way, I never did get to finish ICO and I bought Shadow of the Colossus 6 months after it came out anyway. I'm still looking for a new copy of ICO that doesn't run upwards of $100.

Dagobert May 21, 2009 01:26 PM

At first I was like ehh, the graphics don't seem that impressive and that it looks like an old PS1 CGI scene at the part of the chain. However half way through the trailer I was impressed by it, especially towards the end with the part of the moss and grass or whatever it is on the rocks the kid jumps off on. Only thing that kinda annoys me is the kid's model, it looks too shitty. It's like a low poly model and it doesn't go that well with the rest of the environment that looks good in this trailer.

I wonder if this game fits in before Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, after them, or in-between them?

I gotta watch that movie again, haven't seen it in years. I used to call that dragon a flying dog. Is it supposed to be a flying dog or really just a dragon?

I think it's this. I mean, they did the obvious pretentious art sequel thing which is make a prequel that's only abstractly linked to the previous project. So the classic pretentious thing to do now is to put something in between that makes it look like they planned the whole thing all along. Of course, pretentious isn't a bad thing if you can pull it off, and they've done that wonderfully so far, so I'm definitely not complaining.

I really have to buy a PS3 now...

bahamuty May 27, 2009 11:26 PM

I've heard that is a year old internal video shown at Sony. If that's true that means the game has had a years worth of development since then and it's going to look much more polished and have any place holders removed. Team ICO pushed the PS2 to it's limit so I expect some stunning visuals for Trico.

Worm May 28, 2009 09:11 AM

Unfortunately they also dragged the PS2 framerates down into the dirt, so I'm hoping I don't take that route and try and cover it up with a bunch of motion blur.

Bloodcinder May 28, 2009 06:54 PM

Hopefully "Trico" can look like SoC but with a decent framerate. Even that would be fantastic.

Worm Jun 2, 2009 06:15 PM

I guess this should go here:
YouTube Video

Looks like the kid decided to borrow CJ's shirt.

Game still looks beautiful, but god damn that glow is not tasteful like it was in Ico.

Cat9 Jun 4, 2009 09:41 AM

I definitely am looking forward to this, but I'm a little disappointed that they didn't have an original soundtrack to go with the trailer.

There's no way I can apply the theme to Miller's Crossing to anything else but that movie, so It had a jarring effect to me. I would have rather had more Ico-like ambient track.

Watch it with the sound off and some Art of Noise on in the background then.

IGN: Fumito Ueda Talks Trico
Some comments from Ueda. Nothing really informative, though.

There's a care aspect for the eagle as well. You can feed the eagle and remove spears and arrows that have pierced it. Ueda feels that the development staff will have to take care to strike a balance and make sure the care aspects do not becoming a chore.

Growth and stage puzzles are major elements to the game. There are platforming aspects as well -- you can climb, grab things and crawl.

The flow of the game is a bit of a mystery right now. Asked if your movement through the stages will be seamless, Uedo said that it's seamless as far as there being no load times as you move about. However, there is an order to the locations that you visit.
...
...the stage design involves how you go about getting the eagle to do stuff for you. Rather than simply saying you're giving orders to or working with the eagle, it's better to say that you're using the eagle's behavior as a living creature. The eagle may not simply follow your orders. But you can, perhaps, throw something that it likes in order to make it move.

Also something to keep in mind as you work through the levels is that eagle's level of intellect isn't all that high (this is what Uedo said -- don't send nasty e-mails to us). It may not move according to your expectations. As an example, you may be able to clear an area if the eagle would just sit still. However, the eagle ends up moving.

Oh, and the real title is amusing:

So this game is aimed at Furries then? I can already imagine the moutain of shitty, furry fan-porn that this game is going to generate.

And you know that Q will have it all stored somewhere...

Kairi Li Jun 9, 2009 04:13 AM

I had to admit I thought of the same thing as below when I saw the trailer...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...i/20090608.jpg

I've enjoyed both ICO and Colossus alot, so I am to eager to play this. Hopefully the frame rate won't be as bad as SOTC though.
