Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star, for the PSP
Posted on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 12:26 AM.

According to Famitsu, GungHo Works is producing a new Lunar game for the PSP! Called "Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star", the game is another handheld remake of Lunar: Silver Star Story. However, it appears to be a fuller remake of the game. In all, this is what we know thus far:

L:HSS will take advantage of the PSP's graphic capabilities in battle and town screens, and uses an isometric view for towns (similar to Lunar: Dragon Song)
L:HSS uses the point-and-click interface in the overworld map (similar to Lunar: Legend)
L:HSS will include voice acting, although it's unclear if the same voice samples will be used from SSS, or if they'll re-record. They are listing the same voice actors for the main characters, however (Shou Ishida for Alex, Kyoko Hikami for Luna, Daisuke Sakaguchi for Nash, Yasuhiro Takato for Ramus)
L:HSS is due to be released in Japan in Fall 2009. No word on an American release yet.

LunarNET will continue to bring you more news as it breaks. Check back with us throughout the week. And, many thanks goes to Nobuyuki of Zel Studios (The Official Site of Studio ZEL Artworks) for breaking this story!

Sure its another remake of Lunar: The Silver Star... but I'm stoked.

I hope Atlus (or hell even Vic/Gaijinworks) gets ahold of this title instead of Ubisoft who raped the GBA port.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 13, 2009 11:22 AM

Yeah, we were talking about it in the gaming news thread. I find this pseudo-press release thing from LunarNet funny, though.

Yes, it takes advantage of the PSP's incredible ability to display 2D sprites and backgrounds! And do they really want to make that comparison to Dragon Song? It seems like you should be saying "A first for the real Lunar series!"

Very meh as details continue to be released. Seems like a half-assed remake with the bulk of the change coming in added voicework. Good job, Japan, what a classic RPG already remade three times over really needed was more voices.

Gechmir May 13, 2009 11:43 AM

I'm not too optimistic. Working Designs made the two games absolute gold given the dialogue choice :V Even if they re-use the same voice actors, the humor would probably be missing entirely.

Picture from magazine. Looks alright. I'd prefer a direct overhead view in-town as opposed to isometric. Looks... Odd :x

Even if they fuck with it much, I guarantee you that given the fan-base, a re-dub (to WD) and a text swap (with the PS1 version) probably wouldn't be ruled out.

GB --
As a fan of the original and its remake, I'd prefer Lunar sticks to 2D entirely.

I have to wonder why you assume that any other company than Working Designs would fail at localising the game well. So it might be different. We all know that WD were pretty creative at rewriting the script of the games they work on, but... just because it's different it would have to be bad?

Personally I never finished the game. It looked interesting to me, and I was enjoying it up to a point, but I got distracted. As a result I'm interested in this new version, but I have no emotional ties to the old version. I felt the same about the Dragon Quest games which were remade for the DS. I know a few people who are horrified because things like spell names have been changed... but for me, approaching the game relatively fresh, having never completed a DQ game before, I'm enjoying the DS versions.

In that case, why even play the remake at all? I mean, it's easy enough to get PS1 games running on a PSP. If you can run a version of the remake which has been hacked up with all these alterations, you can just as easily run the original game. It doesn't seem likely that the remake would be so exact that a one-to-one text swap and redub would be possible. It seems far more likely at least to me that they'll take the time to add in some new content, like they did when the game jumped platforms before.

If that did happen, you'd have this weird mishmash of old content with old text and voices, and new content with new text and voices. It wouldn't exactly be harmonious. I understand your love for the original version, although... I can't claim to share it. I just can't help but think that it's better to just stick to the original if you want Working Designs' unique touches, and play the new version for whatever take on it that game can offer.

It's not like the requirement for buying the new game is to hand over your old copy of the game to be incinerated or anything.

You have to admit, WD's work is at least...unique. It would be unlikely for another company to both attempt and capture a similar style and be successful with it. There's no telling if it would be good or bad at this early point, but in the case of some nostalgia faggots, different already is bad, so.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 13, 2009 08:15 PM

It also doesn't help that Lunar has a ho-hum storyline (like every other jrpg, amirite) and characters whose personalities are hardly passable-- that is, if you take away their Working Designs-inspired dialogue. Ireland may have butchered it, but he made it more colorful than it would have been otherwise.

Working Designs and their translations are a prickly issue with Soluzar, as I recall. His post was originally two sentences.

Oh yeah I admit that completely. If someone tried for the same style, it would be a terrible failure. I'd far rather see someone else do it in their own style, if possible by a team who had never seen the original WD localization.

I just refuse to countenance the idea that different is bad in this instance.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor May 13, 2009 08:30 PM

I think there's potential there, yeah, but like GB said, the original source material would need some serious sprucing up to be as engaging as it was thanks to WD. Alex is not at all an interesting hero no matter what way you slice it, so here's hoping they do something interesting with it.

And I didn't mean to imply you thought that way, just that some people strongly attached to the WD original translation might. (As much as I love 'em, I want to see what can be done via another take here.)

As GB put it, the original game was rather "meh" before WD fiddled with the dialogue. This hits a sour note with some folks, but I absolutely loved the banter and occasional low-brow gag.

I'll look in to it in hopes that they make Ghaleon as he was in the Sega CD version:
Spoiler:
Originally, Ghaleon turned evil because he didn't approve of what happened to Dragonmaster Dyne, a very, very close friend of his. He got twisted and saw it basically as the Goddess going "meh" and allowing him to die. He never knew that Dyne was still alive and well as Laike.

In the PSX version, Ghaleon was jealous of Dyne. I felt this was, well, not as interesting. Particularly because in #2, Ghaleon isn't a thorough bad guy. Then there's the whole thing that in the original, the dragons were all killed rather than captured.

Anyhow, Soluzar (spoiler-free paraphrasing here), the PSX and Sega CD games are top-notch to me, but the PSX took a liberty or two that I did not prefer and deviated a tad from the original.

Since this looks to base itself off the PSX version from what I saw (same cutscenes and pictures of sorts), it'll probably follow it just the same.

I'll look in to it also because, well, there might be more added content. A few more dungeons or mini-games of sorts.

I don't know that for sure, but I'm willing to admit the possiblity. Without being intimately familiar with the original version, it's hard to say. It is always possible people have been giving Working Designs more credit than they are due. I won't say Victor Ireland, if only because I don't know exactly how much personal input he had on every project in his company. Could be a lot, could be a little, I just don't know.

If you must know, Working Designs fanboys are the prickly issue. You were the one who used the term 'butchered', whereas I did not and would not. I don't agree with their style in some ways, but on the other hand it's a perfectly serviceable script and somewhat better than many you might find from the same era.

I just don't comprehend the adulation this company gets. I really don't see it. Sure they brought over some great games, our collective videogaming memories wouldn't be the same without 'em, but what really bugs me is the concept that nobody else could deliver a reasonable localisation for Lunar other than Working Designs. Gech pretty much wrote it off already, and so did you.

How do you know this? Why do I get the suspicion that the main reason is because Vic Ireland told you so? If there's a reason to believe this other than WD propaganda, then sure... I'll accept it, but even so... you don't think that (for example...) NIS America could punch up the dialogue a little? Atlus? Third rate hacks by comparison to WD the both of them, I'm sure.

You should understand, my basic position here in this thread is that the new version could be awesome. That's not because I loathe and detest Vic Ireland and his band of men, it's because I think the new version could be awesome. I don't hate (or even dislike) the Working Designs version that much, I just don't think it's the 8th wonder of the world. Maybe I would if I finished the game, but I doubt it.

It's interesting to hear that. I read your spoilers because hey... I wanted to know more than I want the unplayed remnant Lunar to remain unspoiled for me. I can see why you'd prefer the SCD version of events

I assume so. It seems to always happen.

For the record, I have no real opinion on Working Designs' localizations, nor do I hold any loyalty to their games. I just know Lunar was boring-ass shit like every other contemporary.

Wait, what? I understand the position of people who don't like Working Designs' liberal approach to localization, but how do you get this passionate about this garbage without even knowing Victor Ireland's role in it? Isn't it worth researching?

The only difference between you and Gech right now is that you've gone and swung in the opposite direction of his statement. You've written me off despite the fact that I said none of those things, and in reality all I said is that the game needs to be spruced up to be entertaining and unique. If Alexander O. Smith wants to take a stab at it, fuck yeah, hand the man the goddamn script. I'd go for some olde english in my Lunar, just for kicks.

I apologise for any offence caused by my presumption. However, in light of your recent edit... why exactly do you like playing PS1 RPGs? =P

If you want to turn the question back on me, I'll tell you right now that my main interest is in the variations on the battle systems. A good story can compensate for a boring battle system, and vice-versa. That's why I like a lot of RPGs many people really don't like. Although... God alone knows why I enjoyed Eternal Sonata.

Quote:

I don't care that much about localisation companies. They turn games into English, that's very nice of them. I tend to buy the product of that labour, and my interest in them ends there. It's not just Working Designs, I couldn't tell you anything about Atlus, NIS America or any other such company. If you hadn't mentioned Vic Ireland by name I wouldn't have known that name. I'm sure I've heard it a time or two, but... eh, hardly important.

I don't even have such strong feelings about Working Designs, I just refuse to believe they were as wonderful as many people seem to think. That seems to give entirely the wrong impression. I'm writing lots in response to this thread primarily because I have the (perhaps mistaken) impression that some people are writing off the new localization even before it is written. Well... that doesn't sit well with me.

In that case, I must apologise. It was never my intention to misrepresent you. It would appear that I have simply assumed that you would play into my preconceived role of the Working Designs fan, and reacted accordingly.

For that I do apologise, again.

I am however sincerely curious as to the statement that the game would require to be 'spruced up' in order to be entertaining. I'm willing to accept the statement on face value, in order to further a discussion. I just want to know exactly how you're aware of this? I'm personally not familiar with any version of the game other than the Working Designs version, and only the first.... I dunno, say 40% of it at that.

I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm asking you how you know what was the content of the script prior to the involvement of Working Designs.

I admit that I had to look up the name, since as previously stated I take absolutely zero interest in the personalities involved in localisation. The only thing I find important is the final product. With that said, I've enjoyed his work, and I certainly agree that he's one example of a localisation producer (if that is the term) who could probably bring a whole new and interesting take on the game.

I don't mean to seem so... what was it...? Batshit Insane. :P

I'm just frustrated by the prejudice of nostalgia.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen May 13, 2009 09:30 PM

Batshit loco, actually! I removed it (and only that) since I was choosing to antagonize you while simultaneously telling you it'd be better to chill out. I apologize.

I'm a big importer-- or rather, I was one back in the day. My Japanese was good enough to have a preeetty decent understanding of everything going on in the game, and it was... straightforward. It wasn't bad, but the characters and plot fell into the typical. The stalwart, lovesick hero (who couldn't even be saved by copious amounts of dialogue tweaking); the frilly girly-girl in need of saving; the cocky douchebag villain; etcetera. A story about dragons and powerful magic, blah blah. That stuff never changed, but the game is remembered fondly for its quotability and unusual sense of humor-- something not in the original (believe me, I'd remember the thespian/lesbian joke if I saw it).

I also happen to have a strong distaste for Working Designs worship, but I also think they made some interesting contributions to the localization process.

Eh. I don't mind. If there's any subject about which I've got a sense of humour it's myself.

That's all I wanted to know. You've got first-hand knowledge, which is at least something I'm willing to believe. If it was just 'what they say' or from some interview with Vic Ireland, I'd be a bit more skeptical.

Quote:

Without question. It's also a fact that a lot of the games they brought over would never have been touched otherwise. I still don't know why they neglected to give use the first Growlanser game, though...

When I refer to NIS America as "the new Working Designs" it is by way of acknowledging all the qualities, both good and bad that the two share.

dagget May 13, 2009 09:40 PM

More news from LunarNET:

A few more tidbits of information to throw up about Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star... There will apparently be new events to the story. Looking at the scan that's been floating around, we can already assume Nash doesn't show up in Burg quite as early as he did in Lunar Legend. One of the screenshots shows Alex, Luna and Ramus in the White Dragon cave, but no Nash. It should be interesting to see which of the Lunar 1 storylines they follow the closest.

It should also be mentioned that the developer is GameArts. This would actually make it the first remake GameArts themselves have done (as the Saturn/Playstation remake and Lunar Legend on the GBA were both done by outside developers for the most part). And with the official Japanese site going live Friday, we're going to try and have a new section on the site for the game by Saturday. This is certainly some unexpected, but very good news about GameArts. It seems they haven't forgotten their old franchises. With Grandia Online to be revealed next week, and now a new remake of Lunar 1, things are looking good for us GameArts fans.

And in regards to a possible North America release? There's a few thoughts floating around the 'net. First, a post on NeoGAF forums by Victor Ireland
making his interest in the title known.
Also of note, an
interview with XSEED at
RPGamer earlier this month hints at the possibility of a LUNAR localization. The final question of the interview posed this question:

I know that E3 is just around the corner, but could you give us some idea of what might be around the corner for XSEED or the XSEED/Marvelous alliance? Any other secrets you can share with your buddies at RPGamer?

Ken: We have tons of titles that we'll be announcing between now and E3 for various platforms. Though I can't quite spell out any titles yet, I will say that we listen to the requests we get from the gaming community and we've tried very hard to secure some of the games that have been requested. We also have an enhanced remake of a classic PSone RPG in North America that we'll be announcing soon which I think the RPGamer audience will be very interested in...

Lunar would certainly fit the bill of a classic PSone RPG. Obviously we'll continue to update with even the slightest bits of news about this re-re-remake.

I'm wondering if we will indeed see Working Designs Gaijinworks label on the game?

More info supposed to be released Friday and even more at E3 in a couple weeks.

This isn't strictly speaking intended as a criticism of Working Designs, but... I think I must be the only person who doesn't find their work funny. I see jokes, I'm not blind... it's just they don't tickle my funnybone. That probably is the main reason why I don't see them as something special.

Gechmir May 13, 2009 10:27 PM

lol XSEED :( Expect ear-bleedingly bad voice acting.

Single Elbow May 14, 2009 05:09 PM

In before the story of "finding Nall in some cave" would be boring at best.

Lmao at XSEED though. I wonder how bad (or relatively annoying) this would turn out.

Also the endearing thing about Lunar: SSSC is the voice acting. Nothing very serious (for a lot of the parts). Hell, I approve of what they do and it provided a bit of "what the fuck" moments instead of a tired, totally serious story with way too serious voice acting.

Taco May 14, 2009 05:18 PM

In all seriousness though, I wouldn't mind playing this. Waiting for US release date..

RPGamer had an interview with XSEED/Game Arts about Lunar: Harmony of the Silver Star:

Quote:

Masato Dobashi: This title is a collaborative development effort between Game Arts and Japan Arts Media.

Will combat allow for characters to move around like the original or are they stationary like in Lunar Legend? Could you share any other details about the game's battle system?

Masato Dobashi: Lunar: Silver Star Harmony is basically a remake of the Sega Saturn version. The battle system is also based on the Sega Saturn version, but the graphics have been updated significantly.

During battle, you can manually instruct your character to run up to the enemy to attack, or you can let the AI take over.

Lunar's always been big on music and sound. How much voice acting will there be? Should we expect more songs such as Luna's Boat Song? Any drastic soundtrack changes or is Noriyuki Iwadare still at the helm?

Masato Dobashi: Since this time the title is on a UMD with large capacity, we will have the same movies that were played on the Sega Saturn version. This means you will be able to enjoy Luna's Boat scene as well.

Regarding the soundtrack, of course we will have Iwadare-san continue to work on Lunar. Iwadare-san has made some extra arrangements for this game and created some great music.

This one could be a deal breaker for me. Will there be bromides?

Masato Dobashi: That's still a secret. Please stay tuned.

So, does this perhaps mark a Lunar series revival or just another chance for newer gamers to play this classic?

Masato Dobashi: It's a bit of both. That way everyone can enjoy it, right? I'm personally looking forward to how the Lunar series is going to develop in the future.

The last remake of Lunar on the GBA wasn't as well received by fans as the Sega CD and PlayStation versions. What aspects of Lunar: Silver Star Harmony will appeal to new fans? Long-time fans?

Masato Dobashi: I really think the opinions of Lunar fans towards the series is very important. For this PSP remake, I really wanted to use the Sega Saturn version as the basis to create a solid title because it was also what everyone was hoping for [in Japan].

For the new fans, I would love for them to experience an adventure full of dreams and hopes. Don't you feel like we're lacking those types of RPGs lately? I really wanted to show why Lunar has been loved for 17 years with this new PSP version.

For the old time fans, I would first like to say thank you to everyone. The reason Lunar can be played on the PSP now is because of their long time support and love for this series. For this version, Kei Shigema has put extra effort into the scenario and created a new episode to make it a more complete version of Lunar.

How does XSEED plan on handling the game's quirky humor and sexual innuendos? That was one area that really stood out for me in the prior releases.

Jimmy Soga, XSEED Games: We're still in the early stages of translation so it's hard to say how we will handle it, but it would be a fine balancing act between keeping the original Working Designs English translations as is or to retranslate some of the stuff to be more true to the original Japanese. Working Designs did an excellent localization job, but their text has a lot of 90's pop culture references and possibly some copyright issues that might have been okay when the original was released, but something we need to be more careful about today (such as "Tootsie Rolls", "M&M's", "Wheaties," etc.)

Working Designs was looked on as the North American parent of the Lunar series and always had tons of bonuses (and tons of delays) included with the games. Any early ideas of how you'd like to handle pack-ins?

Masato Dobashi: We are currently discussing with XSEED on this matter so we can't give out any information at this time, but please stay tuned for more details at a later time.

Thank you very much for this opportunity!

We hope everyone is looking forward to the PSP Lunar and will continue to support the series.

Interesting to say I'm curious now how much of WD's translation gets kept in and how much gets re-written. Maybe Meryod will be a hick town yet again! Also heard a rumor (trying to find out if true) that XSEED's going to keep the Japanese audio in for the game. So I guess if the american voice acting is shitty, we can fall back to the original audio. (In before Ghaleon sounding like a raging homo than effeminate.)

khan0plinger Jun 28, 2009 07:25 PM

I think without the brilliant dialogue that WD was responsible for, this game will be severely lacking. The game worked before because of the humorous jokes throughout the game, you take that out and focus more on the plot and it will be terrible. Probably will be weird getting used to new VA too.

I agree. I played the PS1 version of the game and loved it because of the atmosphere. I don't even remember anything about the plot; I only remember the characters and atmosphere...

Kizyr at LunarNET translated the Famitsu article that was recently released:

LunarNET - Multimedia

The pre-order bonus for the Japanese release is a limited edition soundtrack:

Those who pre-order can receive beautiful soundtrack, with the jacket design by Toshiyuki Kubooka. The songs themselves are arranged by Noriyuki Iwadare. Those who want it should be sure to pre-order!

A word from Noriyuki Iwadare!
Once I got the opportunity to remake the songs for "Lunar", I thought to make it the best possible, so first I bought an ocarina (-laugh-). Then, I practiced, since Alex was an 'expert at the ocarina'. It was a high hurdle, but it felt great. Thus, I rearranged and composed all the melodies. It's full of live performances, so I hope you enjoy. There are new songs, too!

New translation ahoy:
Quote:

When contacted during RPG Land’s Jog at the Moon, XSeed was still weighing its options regarding the translation in LUNAR’s upcoming PSP port. After a complex series coin tosses and white board drawings, the company has decided to forge onward with its own script rather than use the one Working Designs did for the game’s PlayStation release. In related news, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony will be released in Japan this November, and some vague time in 2010 in North America. This writer hopes the line, “All things are real unless you dream they’re not,” is axed from Luna’s song. #### that line.

Soluzar Sep 11, 2009 07:28 AM

This should be interesting then. Unlike so many who are great fans of the series, I'm not going to condemn it before trying it. Some say that any script other than the Working Designs script would be dull, but I can't entirely accept that without seeing the offering from XSEED. There's always the chance that they can surprise us all...

FatsDomino Sep 11, 2009 08:01 AM

If you really really want the Working Designs script you might as well just play the PSX version. It would be better to see XSEED's own take. I mean just imagine, they might have talented writers of their very own. Gasp.

Gechmir Sep 11, 2009 08:18 AM

From Xseed's past games I've played, I won't hold my breath on the "brilliant writing" department ='D

FatsDomino Sep 11, 2009 08:32 AM

They could change! Although I bet a horribly broken English version of Lunar would hold A LOT of charm actually.

Gechmir Sep 11, 2009 08:39 AM

All dreams are real unless you dream they're not => As for all dreams they're if you do not look at dream, due to its substance; It is not.

=0 Awards await!

Well exactly. It's not like it's hard to emulate, copy, download, whatever the PS1 version.

They should just replace that song with "Dreams" by the Cranberries or better yet "I Wonder if Heaven Got a Ghetto" by Tupac.

What? Why? It's pretty obvious Gaijin Works wasn't tapped for this, and Vic has even made statements several weeks ago regarding how he offered his assistance but was not taken up on it.

This has been known for a while. While a shame, the essence of the story remains intact. And as long as it's not full of grammatical errors, it should still be fine. Minus the pop culture references, I guess.

That said, WA5's translation wasn't all that terrible (comparitively to other middle budget PS2 jRPGs) so I don't think it'll outright blow, at least.

dagget Sep 11, 2009 05:30 PM

Well before we start blowing XSEED up over this, I've been told that the article isn't all that accurate after emailing my friend to ask him about it. I'm waiting for the details and will post when I get them from him later.

I haven't played an XSEED game (to my knowledge) and I am disappointed that they're not going to be using any of Working Designs translations, much like Ubisoft's translation disappointed me. However, I'm curious to what about that little article isn't correct.

That's not a very fair comparison though, considering how fantastic Covenant was. I never could get into SH3 because all the characters were terrible.

Gechmir Sep 11, 2009 06:28 PM

Yeah, SH3 was horrible from the get-go. I know historic accuracy isn't an aim of theirs, but I lolled when they showed Al Capone as a svelte young man, and Elliot Ness was all "hay sup Al-dude" at prison.

Shit characters, but the shit translation made it worse.

Because of the polarization of LUNAR fans that love the WD style of quirky humor and those that have always wanted a direct translation, many wondered what direction XSEED would go to please the entire fandom. So amid reports this week of a completely new translation, we hit up XSEED directly to get some clarification and I think both sides of the LUNAR fandom will be pleased with the answer.

The plan is to refresh the Working Designs translation, keeping the charm while updating the text and bringing the translation closer to the original Japanese. XSEED understands that the original Working Designs translation was a big reason why many people loved the title, so they're trying to make the translation both true to what people loved about it, while still giving old time fans a new experience. New scenarios and a lot more detail about the world of LUNAR can be expected from the game. Also, no decision has been made on voice acting. While there is no official drop date, LUNAR: Silver Star Harmony will likely be out sometime in early 2010.

So it is going to be a mix of both the same translation and some of theirs, just a bit updated in terms of references and other things. I just hope Meyrod stays as that backwater (literally lewl) town.

Hindman Sep 12, 2009 10:59 AM

Saying it's going to be "a mix" and "a bit updated" is your own interpritation. XSeed's own words more sounded like keeping the same *style* while writing a script that was, in the much bigger part, new.

dagget Sep 12, 2009 11:23 AM

Mix, style update. Whatever. It is a lot better than raping it like Ubisoft did.

Didn't get far as I had to fiddle with something that was crashing my PSP. Only real gripe I had from the first ten minutes is why the game feels the need to have three different resolutions.

Rockgamer Oct 22, 2009 11:38 AM

Yeah, I was really disappointed that they couldn't remake the cutscenes so that they fill up the whole screen. And it's just a personal preference of mine, but I don't like these new sprites at all. I understand the need to update them, but I just don't like the direction they went in to do so.

Everything else seemed fine though. I still don't see a need to play this since the PS1 version is still superior in most aspects, but I guess if you need another Lunar fix or can't track down a copy of the PS1 version this is the next best thing (barring the fact that we don't know anything of how the English version will turn out, of course).

And Deni, Japanese PSN accounts are free just like in any other region, so you can easily download the demo without going through any other hoops once you make one. The only problem is that to transfer it to your PSP you have to deactivate it, meaning you can't use any content tied to your regular PSN account that's on your PSP until you activate it again (which means you couldn't play the demo again until you once again deactivate it). It's more of a hassle than an actual hindrance, but it's still worth noting.

Lacerta Oct 22, 2009 11:58 AM

Demo is pretty short. Beat it a few times to see if there was any way to keep it going past Quark after giving him the dragon ring, but I guess not. Game definitely feels much easier than the PS1 counterpart. I guess those limit break things also contribute to it (Luna does party HP&MP heal, Alex hits the field with wind damage a few times).

Cut-ins are so hip they make any game cool~

http://oic.houyokusen.com/psp/lunar/snap016.bmphttp://oic.houyokusen.com/psp/lunar/snap017.bmp

I'd only get it if you were interested in the sprite touch-ups and redone dungeons, based on the demo.

I had fun with the ps1 version of the game, Im not sure if this is any better, but at the time I really appreciated what WD were doing with some of the obscure rpg titles wich wouldnt have seen the light of day if it wernt for WD. When I get the chance however I'll check this one out. Ive always been a fan of the Lunar games, so it should be fun.

surasshu Nov 7, 2009 11:37 AM

I saw that this is apparently based on the Sega CD games, not the PS1 games, does that mean the parts of the story that were messed up or "clarified" have been restored? I think I might get this either way, but that would really push it over the edge for me. The PS1 games were way more polished, but the Sega CD games were far less broken storywise for me (could be just nostalgia talking, but still).

magewarrior Nov 7, 2009 11:50 AM

At least in the case of Silver Star, you're not wrong. Luna is a far more interesting character when she knows what is going on rather than being a quasi amnesiac, and it makes her choices a bit more poignant that way.

dagget Nov 7, 2009 02:30 PM

There's also a new "villain" in the game but for now the details show it's only a villain for the Four Heroes (Dyne, Ghaleon, Lemia and Mel) that apparently (if I'm seeing the screens and reading the article right) you fight as them against him.

He looks kinda cool and name is Aiferun:

http://www.lunar-net.com/ssh/website...su-aiferun.jpg

Once, he journeyed across the world with Dyne, the Goddess Althena, and their friends. He was at odds with Dyne and the others regarding the state of the world and god(s), and thus became an enemy. And, after many fierce battles, he managed to capture Althena, and is trying to use her magic power to become a god himself. In truth, he has the same weaknesses that could be found in any human heart.

And he has the power of 5 god (masks?):

http://www.lunar-net.com/ssh/website...iveprinces.jpg

Five Princes of the Black Star:
The five gods summoned by Aiferun: Fubau, Ratone, Igarune, Serrona Mashun, Kikero*. They intend on destroying the world. They have no true form, and so they take the shape of these masks. During the battle with the Four Heroes, they use the body of Aiferun.
* Again, official English transliteration not yet known.

So it's looking like that there is indeed more backstory to the game to at least warrant a purchase for the 3rd (4th?) remake of Lunar: Silver Star.

I hope it does well enough that Lunar 2 will get the same treatment.

LunarNET - Lunar: Silver Star Harmony for the translated famitsu article

Apparently there's a whole other scenario they're adding, yeah, that let's you play as the four heroes. No idea on length or meatiness of that segment, though.

They're also saying "new bromides", as if people still get their rocks off to pictures of Mia or something.

Oh, so they're trying to explain how the Four Heroes became heroes and how exactly they saved Althena from evil or whatnot? Not a bad addition, even if it would have been better off as a new game.

Now that I think about it, I remember reading how they always wanted to work on a prequel starring the Four Heroes.

Special Collector's Edition:

Quote:

XSEED Games know Lunar fans are used to getting more, and while the limited edition of Lunar: Silver Star Harmony doesn't get close to the lavish releases Working Designs gave us in the 90's, it's nothing to sneeze at.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony is an enhanced remake of Lunar: The Silver Star, coming to the PSP courtesy of XSEED Games in Q1 of 2010. While the game will retail for $29.99, $10 more will net players a special limited edition package containing a soundtrack CD and a set of 13 exclusive "bromide" collector cards featuring the girls of Lunar.

"As the definitive version of Lunar: The Silver Star with completely reworked graphics, a remastered soundtrack containing songs new and old, an enhanced battle system, and additional story elements never before revealed, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony deserved a special Limited Edition version to commemorate the rebirth of this beloved franchise," stated Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games. "For fans of the previous iteration, we've built upon the English script from before to offer returning fans something new while keeping the heart of the original outstanding localization intact."

As I said, it's certainly not the cloth map, soundtrack CD, hardbound instruction manual and making of videos of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, but it'll do. They just don't make them like Working Designs anymore.

The funny thing about that is WD weren't even making any regular editions. All the versions of most of their games came with amazing packaging. I remember seeing the graphics for the enhanced port of SSSC and thinking "Oh well, this will be one of those slim cases with 1 disc that doesn't take up too much room". Imagine my surprise when I went to pick up my copy. I miss WD, mainly for the extra effort they put into stuff like this. That and their localizations were pretty damn hilarious.

khan0plinger Jan 14, 2010 09:50 PM

Demo is available on PSN if anyone wants to give it a shot, I am downloading it now.

dagget Jan 15, 2010 04:13 PM

official website is up... I want to puke at the translation of the song...

Sounds like Jenny Stigile to me though

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony

there's also sample of the voice acting...

/facepalm

with that said, Ghaleon's isn't to bad. I think they actually got cam clarke. (can't hardly tell from a couple lines, but sounds like him) Although Nash and Kyle... bleh. I'm also going to add that Nall's voice is entirely annoying. WTB option for japanese audio plox.

The Plane Is A Tiger Jan 15, 2010 07:46 PM

Why does the new song make you want to puke? The original song was just as corny, if not more so. Nostalgia aside, I think this one sounds a little better.

As for the voice acting, it sounds fine to me. The only problem is so many of them being recognizable from nearly every other RPG released in the past couple of years, but at this point it's almost stranger for Yuri Lowenthal to not be the main character of an RPG. Rita Mordio fits pretty well for Jessica too. Kyle is the only one that bugs me, but I'm fairly certain he's drunk for that line, so there's no problem. Nall's voice is nowhere near its original annoying pitch, so you're complaining about nothing. Stop rushing for Japanese audio when this is miles above the old voice acting, as charming as it was.

I was planning to ignore this remake aside from the new soundtrack, but the extra Four Heroes stuff is mighty tempting. I'll have to give the demo a try later. I've been considering replaying SSSC again since going through all of Eternal Blue this summer, but this could work.

dagget Jan 15, 2010 08:41 PM

I dunno, just something about the song seems more cheesy to me and the voice acting, while working designs wasn't near perfect, just a few of the people's voices just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm sure it is one of those things I'll learn to get used to if there's no second audio option.

Single Elbow Jan 15, 2010 08:55 PM

The song has always been cheesy. Power of love, hope and dreams and all that sugar-coated stuff. This one is just a new addition to the mix.

Maybe for an Eternal Blue remake we'll just have metal as the theme song instead. Your band of choice.

dagget Jan 15, 2010 09:14 PM

This is also coming from the guy who made a really cheesy anime music video based of Lunar and the song from King's Quest VI. So I have no room to talk about what's cheesy and what isn't.

It's all good though, cheese or not, just not used to a non-WD localization. As I said, I'll get over it.

Finished the demo. Ultra short but from what there was of it, I was left wanting more. the translation for the story isn't so bad (and I will admit that the new song is growing on me, but the voices still haven't) and I can tell XSEED tried their best to keep it as close to WD's as they could. Really interested in seeing the rest of the game when it comes out next month.

The Plane Is A Tiger Jan 16, 2010 05:30 PM

I just finished up the demo, and I enjoyed it overall. I'll probably pick up the full game when it comes out next month. Like Dagget already said, the new translation seems very close to Working Design's old one which is nice. There were a few gameplay changes that annoy me, though.

The world map is now a select your destination kind of thing rather than roaming around. Not a huge deal since Lunar's world map was always pretty straightforward with no random battles or secrets aside from the bath forest towards the end, but it's still kind of irritating. I like walking around.

No more dashing. You move at the same slow pace both in towns and in dungeons, and monsters chase after you at an equally slow pace. I really hope there's something to speed you up a little in the full game, but the Options menu is inaccessible in the demo.

The White Dragon Cave is tiny now. It was never huge before, but Qwark's room is practically right next to the entrance. Maybe they trimmed it to cut down on the number of rooms you have to load.

I could be wrong, but I don't remember getting back full HP/MP whenever you leveled up in SSSC. I know that wasn't the case in Eternal Blue, at least. Not an annoyance, but it definitely makes things much easier and drastically lessens the need to conserve MP.

Also, anyone planning to pick up the full game may want to play through the demo. It mentions getting some sort of extra thing if you have a completion save from the demo. It only goes up to the end of Qwark's cave, so it doesn't take long.

SouthJag Jan 16, 2010 06:51 PM

Holding the R button while walking will make you move a little faster. Brisk walking pace, anyway. As far as the White Dragon Cave, I noticed the size difference too. I wonder if, since they used a tweaked version of Lunar Legend's battle system, maybe they borrowed a little more from the GBA version.

dagget Jan 18, 2010 01:46 PM

I hope that the rest of the caves aren't as tiny as the white dragon cave, either. I missed the roaming the overworld portion too, as I always liked exploring that way. The refresh of health when you level up is nice too cause that way I won't go in, fight about 3-4 beasties then have to go back to Burg and refresh at the Althena statue to go back. Rinse and repeat.

Also I found out there's a reason the singer sounds like Jennifer Stigile... it is. Apparently XSEED had contacted the original voice actors to reprise their roles but they turned it down out of respect for Vic. Well except for Jenny lol. But hey, a paycheck's a paycheck.

I also like how Jessica sounds like Mitzi from Shin Chan.

The Plane Is A Tiger Jan 18, 2010 02:35 PM

The original Alex was no doubt too busy trying to reunite his boy band. The songs were the only VA type of thing I was worried about them messing up, so Stigile was the only important one anyway. Not sure why the others would turn it down out of respect for Vic. Game remakes aren't unusual, so it's not like they're spitting on Working Design's grave.

This is somewhat backwards.

Vic was messing in his pants because he was not dealing with this release, and basically said "you got all of us or you got none of us", and because he holds sway with them still, that has more to do with why they didn't take it than anything.

There was really no "out of respect" here. And using Vic's own words, Jennifer "broke rank". Like they're some sort of union and she's a scab or something.

Vic is shitting himself sideways over this release. Watching him post on NeoGAF is an amazing experience. It's a whiny bitchfest the likes of which are hard to explain. He's condemning it to the level of Lunar Legend and Dragon Song and whatnot just on the basis that he's not working on it, conveniently ignoring that this demo proves that SHIT IS JUST FINE. The game can take a slightly different tone and still come out alright.

His reactions to this version have been really God damn bizarre.

Yeah, I was going by what I was told and didn't want to say something that people would scream "BULLSHIT" over and couldn't find a nicer way to put it than "out of respect" instead of saying it was VIC'S IRON GRASP OF DOOM! "Lol you voice for them and you'll never work for Working Designs again!! O wait..."

Over the years of talking with Vic, t's kind of funny to see him damn another Lunar remake when it was being developed (Legends). He was so against doing yet another version of 1 (can't say I blame him there, honestly) and was even in disputes of sorts with Ubi Soft over the characters names, I think Qwark was a "WD orginal name" and they at first refused them to use it, and not wanting anything to do with it, to damning this one because he's not working on it?! WTF? I guess he expected Game Arts to not license it out to anyone else. Alls I can say is that if he's that upset over it, he shouldn't have sold the rights back to Game Arts.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Jan 18, 2010 10:09 PM

Vic Ireland in general seems to be bizarre. His reactions to anything vaguely related to his work are usually either dickish nonchalance or offended rage.

I don't disagree with any of you concerning Vic's attitude, but I do have to take a moment to once again express the fact I wish there was a company out there that used WD's production values on game releases. The beautiful manuals, the crazy special editions, the awesome guides...

I didn't even care they were six years late, because damn, they were great.

i would like to read what vic said about the old lunars, how do you go about gaining a username for NeoGAF?

No. Hard Pass. Feb 23, 2010 10:29 PM

You sign up, you show great patience, and then shame.

Unless you want to be bombarded down by subjective trivia of how everything Sony is great, I wouldn't.

Going with Deni here. Sign up at your own risk.

dagget Feb 25, 2010 04:32 PM

I actually got denied signing up to NeoGAF a few months ago. :(

I don't think Vic would ever trash the old Lunars seeing as how those are probably the biggest titles WD had but with the fit he threw with Jenny S working with Xseed, who knows anymore.

aerisangel Feb 25, 2010 08:19 PM

I signed up but i guess i will wait. Are they that harsh?

Denied? Why?

dagget Feb 25, 2010 11:47 PM

I have no idea, I went to sign up and told me to wait for verification, and then like a week later I got an email "I'm sorry but your request to join these forums has been denied". or something along those lines. I just said fuck it and just watched the hilarity in the Lunar thread ensue.

So it came out today, Im about to pick up my copy, anyone try it yet?

dagget Mar 3, 2010 12:14 AM

Just got a chance to sit down with my copy. I suggest if you're going to try it out, then download the demo from the PSN first. If you go through the demo and save at the end, you're supposed to get some kind of bonus when you start up the full game.

Looks like when my friend played the demo, it over-wrote my save since it doesn't register the completed demo at all, unless I'm doing it wrong. Guess I'll finish the demo again and then start the full version.

SouthJag Mar 3, 2010 02:06 AM

Looks like the demo completion item is what Alex's dad gives him when he sets off to the cave; or rather, what he gives Luna. In the demo, he gave her a Sling for a weapon. In the game (with my demo complete data) he gave her Silver Darts. Same damage as the Poison Darts you can buy in the not-too-far future, but have a high RES rating.

Is anyone playing this on custom firmware? The demo hated the latest GEN, and I figure this is going to as well.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 5, 2010 08:08 PM

GEN-D3 Final or whatever is confirmed, and I guess there's a patch for m33. It seems to be running fine for most.

aerisangel Mar 5, 2010 08:38 PM

So i dont mean to be so biased against this one but having alex know hes going to become a dragonmaster 30 minutes into the game is just ruining it, it softens the whole love story. He boecame that to save Luna, it wasnt a oh here you go thing.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 5, 2010 08:44 PM

Wasn't the whole intro in the original about how Alex is in love with the legend of Dyne and how he wants to emulate him and go on adventures? The whole thing with Luna is the stereotypical "knight in shining armor" bit to give it a deeper sense of purpose and become the main driving force of the protagonist, but Alex's desire to be a Dragonmaster was always there.

That being said, I'm reminded of how shit this story is.

aerisangel Mar 5, 2010 08:47 PM

Yeah hes always wanted to be, but its strange how hes like, oh hey guess what, you are. I guess im just a sucker for a cheezy love story.

dagget Mar 6, 2010 12:11 AM

Looks like they kept a good chunk (so far as I can tell) of the dialogue from WD's translation. Boat song was changed up though. Haven't got much further than that yet but I've actually been enjoying the game over again beside the fact this is like my 4th or 5th different version. Now if only it does well enough for Eternal Blue to be remade for PSP.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Mar 23, 2010 03:20 PM

These load times are killing me. Off the disc they are significantly worse than in the demo, and even something so minor as pausing the music for 7 seconds every time you go from one town screen to the next is just driving me bonkers. Combine that with the shortened dungeons and way easier enemies and I'm having far less fun than I should.

Translation is fine, music and gameplay are fine, but between the excruciating loads and the lack of challenge, I'm just not interested in finishing this at all.

Final Fantasy Phoneteen Mar 23, 2010 11:26 PM

I've already put it down. No real interest in continuing on with it.

If they ever do decide to remake Lunar 2 (hahaha), they had better handle it a bit better.
