Wheel of Fortune

I'll spiff this up later, but for NOW

Hello, Gamingforce, and welcome to Mo0's rendition of Wheel of Fortune, blatantly ripping off one of America's favorite gameshows! It's Hangman plus CASH MONEY (virtual) AND PRIZES (also virtual)! Isn't that EXCITING?

I'm actually torn between two different ways to "host" this. One of them involves allowing everyone to play by taking simultaneous turns over the course of a day, updating the board all at once, and then everyone getting another crack. The other way is what I'm going to do at first, which is ask for three players:

Red Player: Hawkeye
Blue Player: wvlfpvp
Yellow Player: Crash Landon

and play the game the normal way. To spin, you'll roll a 1d24, and I'll let you know what you landed on. If you land on a dollar amount, you'll guess a letter and win that dollar amount for each instance of the letter in the puzzle. If there's no instances of that letter, you lose your turn. Land on the Lose A Turn space, and the same thing happens, as well as Bankrupt, which also wipes out all your money.

I'll explain other "twists" to the gameplay (shamelessly ripped off from the real show) as we get to them. For now, I need 3 players and 1d100s to determine who'll go first. Tally-ho!

Annoying blinking note: Because of the nature of this game and how the posts won't show up in recent posts, I'll be pestering people by PM if they don't show up for a day or so. Feel free to do the same to me if I do the same.

Scent of a Grundle Feb 17, 2009 02:28 PM

sounds like fun. Hopefully i'll still have internet in the coming days.

Before and after and after

If you've never seen Wheel of Fortune before, one of their more clever categories is Before and After, where the end of one phrase is the beginning of a second, like Vanilla Ice Cream of the Crop. I took that one step farther and made TWO chains in this puzzle.

Since Crash started the first round, Hawkeye will start this one, and since to be perfectly honest his only option is to spin, I'll take care of that for him.

$600, Hawkeye, barring any objections over me spinning for you. What's your poison?

In case anyone's curious, I wrote a quick C program that randomizes a value, adds it to the value you guys roll, and "lands" on a space that way. If everyone would like I can always make it a combo of two PUBLIC rolls on the forums, but I'm trying to make it so y'all can't just guess what number you need to hit for, say, $5,000.

I say the winner should organize the next game.

Scent of a Grundle Mar 11, 2009 11:08 PM

yeah, that was the plan.

I'm probably just going to post a list of which numbers correspond with which spaces on the board so that we can approximately double the speed of the game. Not as suspenseful as Mo0's version, but hopefully more effective.

Who wants to play??

Dopefish Mar 12, 2009 08:56 AM

Faster game at the expense of suspense is a perfectly fine trade-off.

Again, I'd be happy to play.

Araes Mar 12, 2009 08:00 PM

Unfortunate that this died out, but I'll try out the new game. Not sure why you think that the number system would drastically improve the speed of the game, as we're still going to have bad guesses and misses. It will make it much easier to guess, and make vowel purchasing more accurate, but I wouldn't think that would be such a huge increase? Usually just seems to be login lag.

Scent of a Grundle Mar 13, 2009 12:50 AM

attempt two

Right, that's 3. as much as I would love to let more people play, Wheel of Fortune really doesn't work with more.

I think we'll plan on a three or four round game. That said, I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas to make the game more interesting. I haven't played or even watched the show in quite some time, so I was planning on just playing a standard game.

Here's the wheel I'm basing the numbers off of

Areas, this speeds things up because before Mo0 was having us spin, wait for him to tell us what it was, and then guessing. In this case you guys can guess a letter each time without my having to be there to tell you you didn't get bankrupt.

That said, let it begin!

Chocodecided the order. Garr, you're up first.

Let's start with something simple, shall we?

THING

Dopefish Mar 13, 2009 05:04 PM

You'll increase the money numbers in each round, right?

Araes Mar 13, 2009 06:31 PM

Ah, ok. I read your initial description incorrectly with how you were going to set up the number correspondence. The way I originally read it, I interpreted "board" to mean the letter area which was Ms. White's territory, not the spinner. Makes more sense now.

Additional Spam:
Garr: Since we're apparently using the pre-1989 wheel, Free Spin actually gives you a "Free Spin" token, which you can use to counteract the Bankruptcy and Lose a Turn conditions, as well as missed guesses. If you landed on it in the pre-1989 version, then just spin again immediately. People used to do this constantly and had perfect spins to hit it over and over, so they took it off the board and make it a pick up token with a $ value underneath.

Yay internet.

Scent of a Grundle Mar 14, 2009 12:11 AM

Go ahead and pick a letter Garr. You got $450.

Yes, the number values will go up as the rounds go (although not too much, there won't be any $5000 spaces this time around)

Yeah, I'll replace the free spin with a dollar value. It'll come back next round. Thanks for that tip, I probably would've just left it there. There's no way to set up the number to keep getting them, but still.

Garr has a free spin pretty much just as Areas explained. I'm not sure whether it fully counteracts a bankrupt or just lets you keep going, though. I'm pretty sure a free spin just allows you to continue your turn where it should end, so that's what we'll go with for now.

PM'd Areas, who seems to have gone AWOL. He's been on, but hasn't posted anything for the past couple of days. As this game is going to die if we have to wait too long, if he hasn't done anything by this time tomorrow, I'm passing control to Garr.

Araes Mar 17, 2009 11:54 PM

Apologies, I had work travel come up that kind of caught me by surprise. I think my turns may have too much lag, as I'm only checking email when I get to the hotel each night and crash. Araes get the extra $800 due to my error. And guessing was probably messed up too. At this point Dope's got it, but I guess I'll just let him have the honor of saying the answer.

Do you guys want me to continue to run the game? I feel really bad about this. Both puzzles. At least I'm consistent.

Dopefish Mar 24, 2009 09:25 PM

I'm fine with you playing out the game (since, you know, you'll probably try harder), but I would suggest giving Araes the $800 for the next round, since he loses it when the puzzle is correctly solved. If you don't WANT to continue I'll happily moderate the third game. I'd prefer that you stay on, just so that we can actually finish a game.

BTW, the answer is "TWINKLING CITY SKYLINE".

Scent of a Grundle Mar 24, 2009 09:34 PM

And thus ends round 2.

Dopefish takes the lead with that $3100 puzzle, but Garr's still reasonably close with $2350 in the bank.

I would love to keep modding the game, I just feel like I'm ruining the game by messing up so much. It would probably help if it hadn't been 3 or 4 years since I last watched the show.

Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and give Araes the 800 at the start of this round. Once again, i need to go find a puzzle, so it'll be up in a few. Araes will start this round.

Incidentally, this will probably be the second last round unless I feel the need to extend the game to 5 rounds for some reason.

Dopefish Mar 24, 2009 09:38 PM

Nothing that you've done wrong couldn't be fixed, and it's just a game so no big deal. :)

Scent of a Grundle Mar 25, 2009 09:10 PM

not really surprising, though. hopefully he shows up soon. if it starts getting really silly i might just ask someone else to take over for him.

Dopefish Mar 26, 2009 04:39 PM

I think it's time to strongly consider a replacement.

Or starting from scratch AGAIN.

Scent of a Grundle Mar 26, 2009 04:47 PM

no, we're not starting from scratch. It's not like Araes has won any money anyway, so replacing him with a new player won't have any effect on the game in the end. If anyone else wants to take Araes' place, now would be the time to speak up.

I feel bad about booting you man, but this game shouldn't be moving as slowly as it is.

Araes Mar 26, 2009 05:49 PM

Not a problem if you need to find a replacement. Checked Scrabble yesterday but forgot to do this one. Otherwise, I'll keep at it, as its been fun so far.

Eh, what the hell, I'll solve since I think I figured it out when the A came up, and I don't want to get unlucky and lose it all.

Ireland, err, The Land of Leprechauns

Scent of a Grundle Mar 29, 2009 05:04 PM

Correct you are. That went pretty quickly. Too bad no one else got a turn.

Araes takes the lead with that $5600, Dopefish gets bumped to second place with $3100, and Garr's in the back with $2350. It's still anyone's game, though.

Final puzzle coming soon!

The wheel just got twice as dangerous, but there's a few spaces on there big enough to win the game pretty much instantly. Also, I'm not giving you a category this time, just to make things difficult. :)

Araes Mar 29, 2009 06:49 PM

Its also Garr's turn now correct?

Dopefish Mar 31, 2009 11:40 PM

I'm gonna solve this sucker right now:

KING OF THE JUNGLE

Scent of a Grundle Mar 31, 2009 11:50 PM

... Yeah. Rats. I thought it was a good puzzle.

And thus, with that easy $6000,

Dopefish Wins.

So now what do we want to do? Is the game exciting enough to warrant continuing, or is guessing letters losing its appeal? I'm willing to keep modding if people want to keep playing, but it's hard to hold interest with a game as slow and turn based as this one.

Dopefish Mar 31, 2009 11:56 PM

I'd like to mod a game myself, if you'll let me. Either way, I'll keep playing.

Scent of a Grundle Apr 1, 2009 01:05 AM

Go for it man. I'm far too lazy to actually run a decent game, and I wouldn't mind a bit of a break from modding.

SuperSonic Apr 1, 2009 07:01 AM

I'd like to get into the next one, if that is possible.

Dopefish Apr 1, 2009 08:29 AM

Well then, let's get another threesome going and we'll get this show on the road.

Scent of a Grundle Apr 1, 2009 11:07 AM

I'll play again, unless three new people want to play, in which case I'll bow out.

Dopefish Apr 1, 2009 05:48 PM

Well, rather than risk not having any new players come along, I'll get it started shortly. (As long as I'm not killed. :()

Araes Apr 1, 2009 05:55 PM

Hopefully quick post before I'm slain again. Would be interested, but since you've got three I'll sit this one out. Good game though, and nice solve on the last puzzle Dopefish.

Dopefish Apr 1, 2009 07:31 PM

Alright, we've got three players then:

SuperSonic
Hawkeye
Garr

I'm going to try a more realistic game of Wheel of Fortune, using the actual wheel configuration from the show. I'm going to limit the game to 40 letter guesses total but a minimum of four rounds (if the 40th guess comes before or during the fourth round, we'll go to Final Spin mode in the fourth round, where vowels will be worth $0 and consonants will be worth $1,000 + whatever space the wheel lands on when I spin it), and there will be a Bonus Round for the winner.

Wheel values:
1 = $300
2 = $400
3 = $600
4 = bankrupt
5 = $900
6 = free spin/$300
7 = $500
8 = $900
9 = gift tag/$300
10 = $400
11 = $550
12 = 2/3 bankrupt/1/3 $1M/$800
13 = $500
14 = $300
15 = $500
16 = $600
17 = $2,500
18 = $600
19 = $300
20 = wild card/$700
21 = $450
22 = prize
23 = $800
24 = lose turn

Space 6 is a Free Spin space, meaning if you land on it and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll get $300 per letter and a free spin which you can use at any point in the game to save yourself from the Lose Turn or Bankrupt spaces (but, sadly, you'll still go Bankrupt). The free spin space will thereafter be $300 per letter.

Space 9 is a Gift Tag space, meaning if you land on it and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll receive a gift tag which will be worth $300 per letter and a random bonus between $500-$1000. Note that you'll have to solve the puzzle to redeem it. The Gift Tag space will thereafter be $300 per letter.

Space 12 is a $1,000,000 space, meaning if you land on it, you'll have to roll an additional 1d3. If you roll a 1 or a 3 on the roll, you'll be Bankrupt. If you roll a 2 and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll get $800 per letter and the chance for $1,000,000 in the bonus round if you win and don't go Bankrupt through the remainder of the game. The $1,000,000 space will thereafter be $800 per letter.

Space 20 is a Wild Card space, meaning if you land on it and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll be given $700 per letter and a Wild Card space, which you may use at any point in the game to search for two letters in the puzzle at your discretion. (You may also hold onto it for the Bonus Round.) Thereafter the Wild Card space will be worth $700 per letter.

Space 22 is a Prize space, meaning if you land on it and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll be given $350 per letter and a random bonus between $4,000 and $7,000. Note that you'll have to solve the puzzle to redeem it. Thereafter the Prize space will be worth $350 per letter.

With that said, here's the puzzle and the category:

So it's on to round 2, with a couple things changed on the wheel:

Wheel values:
1 = $300
2 = $400
3 = $600
4 = bankrupt
5 = $900
6 = free spin/$300
7 = $500
8 = $900
9 = gift tag/$300
10 = $400
11 = $550
12 = 2/3 bankrupt/1/3 $1M/$800
13 = $500
14 = jackpot+$500
15 = $500
16 = $600
17 = $3,500
18 = bankrupt
19 = $300
20 = wild card/$700
21 = $450
22 = $350
23 = $800
24 = lose turn

Space 14 is the Jackpot space, meaning if you land on it and guess a letter in the puzzle, you'll be given $500 per letter and the chance to win the Jackpot (which starts at $5,000 and increases progressively based on where players land each turn) by solving the puzzle immediately.

Space 17 has increased in value from $2,500 to $3,500.

Space 18 has been changed from a money space to a Bankrupt space.

It's now Garr's turn, with this puzzle and category:

do-do-do-do
|_|_|_|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_|_|_|_| |_|_|_|_|_|
THINGS

Jackpot: $5,000

(By the way, I should've deducted $250 from SuperSonic's score in the previous round for guessing for As and there not being any. I wasn't sure if that was the rule but it's been confirmed. So guessing vowels in the puzzle and being wrong causes you to lose your turn and $250.)

Dopefish Apr 14, 2009 08:54 PM

Congratulations, Garr, you solved the puzzle!

SuperSonic - $0
Hawkeye - $1850
Garr - $2800

13. Garr guessed S. 1 S. ($400x1)
14. Garr guessed M. No Ms.
15. SuperSonic guessed T. No Ts.
16. Hawkeye guessed R. 1 R. ($500x1)
17. Hawkeye guessed N. 1 N. ($600x1)
18. Hawkeye guessed A. 2 As. -$250
19. Hawkeye guessed G. 1 G. ($300x1)
20. Hawkeye guessed L. 2 Ls. ($600x2)
21. Hawkeye guessed I. 2 Is. -$250
22. Hawkeye guessed P. 1 P. ($900x1)
23. Hawkeye guessed D. 1 D. ($450x1)
xx. Hawkeye went bankrupt on the $1,000,000 space.
24. Garr guessed C. 3 Cs. ($600x3)
25. Garr guessed Y. 2 Ys. ($300x2)
26. Garr guessed "BICYCLE PLAYING CARDS". Puzzle solved.

So after two rounds we've got a heck of a game going. Garr's taken the lead, but it's still anyone's game. There's still at least 2 rounds left to go and a lot of (fake) money to be (won).

On to round 3, with a few changes on the wheel:

Wheel values:
1 = $1000/mystery
2 = $400
3 = $600
4 = bankrupt
5 = $900
6 = free spin/$300
7 = $500
8 = $900
9 = gift tag/$300
10 = $400
11 = $550
12 = 2/3 bankrupt/1/3 $1M/$800
13 = $1000/mystery
14 = $300
15 = $500
16 = $600
17 = $3,500
18 = bankrupt
19 = $300
20 = wild card/$700
21 = $450
22 = $350
23 = $800
24 = lose turn

Spaces 1 and 13 are the Mystery spaces, meaning if you land on them and guess a letter in the puzzle, you have the choice of taking either $1,000 per letter or a 50/50 chance on an instant $10,000 bonus or a Bankrupt. Taking the gamble will require rolling an additional 1d2; 1 being the $10,000 bonus, 2 being Bankrupt. If and when someone takes the gamble, the space that wasn't affected by the gamble will be worth only $1,000 per letter (i.e. one gamble per round), and the space that was affected by the gamble will be worth its normal value (1 = $300; 13 = $500).

Space 14 has been changed from the Jackpot space to $300.

SuperSonic, you'll be starting round 3 with this puzzle and category:

So after three rounds and 39 turns it's still anyone's game, but...

*DING-DING! DING-DING!*

...that means I'm gonna give the wheel a Final Spin. In the final round, players will take turns guessing letters and will be given a chance to guess the puzzle. If a player guesses a letter not on the board, they lose their chance to guess on the puzzle for that rotation. We'll keep going until someone guesses the puzzle correctly. You may buy vowels, and they are worth nothing (meaning no deduction), but consonants are worth...$1550 apiece.

STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND

Dopefish Apr 19, 2009 12:58 AM

Believe it or not, you're CORRECT! Congratulations, Hawkeye, you solved the puzzle and you've won the game!

END OF GAME - TOTALS
SuperSonic - $1000
Garr - $2800

Hawkeye - $6500

1. SuperSonic guessed T. 3 Ts. ($1550x3)
2. SuperSonic guessed "A GROUP OF PILL PUSHERS". Incorrect.
3. Hawkeye guessed S. 3 Ss. ($1550x3)
4. Hawkeye guessed "STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND". Puzzle solved.

Garr, you performed quite well at times, and you ended up having $2800 in fun bucks to spend on that Segway you always wanted!

SuperSonic, I'm sorry things didn't go so well for you. I thought things would've went well for you in the final round after negating the third puzzle, but it wasn't to be. Still, no one on Wheel of Fortune goes home empty handed, so we'll give you $1000 as a consolation prize! Better luck next time!

Hawkeye, pretty tricky to solve a puzzle with that little to work with, but you were pretty accurate with your guesses in this game. You dominated play pretty much from the get-go and if it weren't for that bankrupt in round 2 this could've gotten out of hand. Nevertheless you've won the game and that means you're heading on to the Bonus Round!

The Bonus Round is your chance to boost your score by up to $100,000. The Bonus Wheel has 24 spaces on it with prizes ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 (in increments of $5,000), $100,000 or a new car (random value between $20,000 and $40,000). What I'll need you to do is post and roll 1d24. After your roll you'll need to give me three consonants and one vowel that you think might be in the puzzle. The letters R, S, T, L, N and E are already used in the puzzle. I'll update the puzzle and you'll then post your guesses (up to five) as to what the puzzle might be. If you're feeling super-confident you can post less than five guesses but you better be sure because you're not getting another chance! BEST OF LUCK!

Here's the Bonus Puzzle:

|_|_|_|E| |_|_|_|L|_|_|N|_|E|
Guessed letters: E L N R S T

So give me three consonants and a vowel, and spin 1d24.

(Hope you didn't see my little mistake '¬_¬)

Scent of a Grundle Apr 19, 2009 01:06 AM

how exciting.

I'll take C, P, V, and O.

It is exciting, isn't it! Here's what kind of damage your letters made:

|_|O|_|E| |_|P|P|L|_|_|N|C|E|

Remember, maximum of five guesses in your next post, but I don't think you'll need them all. Good luck!

Scent of a Grundle Apr 19, 2009 10:23 AM

I'd better not, I can't see anything other than HOME APPLIANCE fitting in that puzzle...

Nope, I keep trying, but I can't fit in anything else that makes sense.

Dopefish Apr 19, 2009 10:44 AM

"HOME APPLIANCE" is correct! Congratulations!

Your bonus prize is...a new car! It's a four-door sedan, nothing terribly fancy, and it's still kinda behind the times in terms of fuel efficiency, but maybe you can just sell it for a good chunk of money. The value of the car is $20,039, bringing your final score to $26,539! Congratulations again!

So, since that game is over, I wouldn't mind "hosting" again but if anyone thinks I suck or they just would like to take over that's cool with me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt the game was dragging on a bit long. Did it seem like I complicated things?

I was enjoying it when things were moving along.

SuperSonic Apr 19, 2009 01:14 PM

Scent of a Grundle Apr 19, 2009 04:23 PM

2. SuperSonic guessed "THE DING-DONG SONG." Incorrect.
3. Garr guessed G. No Gs.
4. Slash guessed W. No Ws.

10. SuperSonic guessed "MY FUNNY LITTLE VALENTINE." Puzzle solved.

Slash, good showing! If it hadn't been for the bankrupt in round 3, this might've turned out differently. Better luck next time.

Garr, you had a good run at it in round 2 but it wasn't meant to be. You still get $1000 as a consolation, bringing your all-time total up to $3800. Good stuff!

SuperSonic, unbelievable. You blew everyone off the stage in round 1 and never looked back. You tripled what Hawkeye had by the end of the game last time, and with the Bonus Round on the horizon you've got a great chance of coming away with more money overall.

Here are the rules for the Bonus Round, in case you forgot them.

All right, we have three contestants. If you don't know how the game goes, you spin 1d24 and whatever it lands on corresponds to the spaces listed below. You guess a consonant and if it's on the board you get x times the value of the space, x being the number of times that letter is on the board. If you have $150 and it's your turn, you can also buy a vowel. You lose your turn if the letter you guess isn't on the board, or if you land on Bankrupt or Lose Turn. Also, one change to the Wheel itself: Free Spin is now a permanent slice of the wheel, so if you land on it you'll get a free spin regardless of whether you get a correct letter or not. Anything else needs to be explained, I'll explain it.
Spoiler:
1 = $300
2 = $400
3 = $600
4 = bankrupt
5 = $900
6 = free spin and $500

Dullenplain Sep 15, 2010 09:12 AM

I think I'll spin again.

Okay, $550.

We got T?

And if I am successful, I'll buy an A.

Dopefish Sep 15, 2010 08:25 PM

There are 3 Ts, netting you $1650, then 4 As, bought for $150.

Think I'll spin.

Okay, got a Wild Card and landed on $700.

Let's go for an R.

And if that's good, I'll buy an O.

Dopefish Sep 15, 2010 09:08 PM

Two Rs for $1400, and $150 gets you two Os.

There is an error in the puzzle, BTW, but we'll keep going. Dull, the Wild Card you just got can be used at any time in any round to guess any letter (you get the value of the space you land on for consonants, vowels are free), though saving it for the Bonus Round may be wise.

Dullenplain Sep 15, 2010 09:58 PM

I'll spin one more time, let's hope it lands on money!

Hell yeah, Free Spin and $500!

Dullenplain Sep 16, 2010 09:02 AM

Just to make sure, I think my cash total should actually be $5050.

$300 for one S
$1650 for three Ts
-$150 for the As
$1400 for the two Rs
-$150 for the Os
$2000 for the four Ns

which makes the total $5050, unless I'm counting something incorrectly here.

Anyway, I'll solve the puzzle, even with the error that was in it.

My apologies to Zergrinch, who PMed me to let me know there is no "S" in the name of Grand Teton National Park, which obviously would've set this round in another direction had I not had that typo.

Anyway, you'll get your chance at redemption Zergrinch in round 2, as you're up first. New wheel values:

Dullenplain - $5050
Zergrinch - $1850
Dr. Uzuki - $0

I should also mention that the Free Spin space (which should be called Free Play now) is now static; that is, you don't get to keep it. Here's how Wikipedia explains it:
Quote:

The contestant landing on Free Play may call either a consonant for $500 or a vowel at no cost, or may attempt to solve the puzzle. The contestant does not lose their turn for incorrectly solving the puzzle or for calling a letter that is either not in the puzzle or has been previously called. This wedge remains on the wheel throughout the game.
So, sorry to Dull for the lack of clarification on that. Another error that could've changed how the round went.

I also didn't keep track of the Jackpot during the last round like I should have. I'm messing up a lot this time around! :eagletear:

Anyway, round 3 and we're still quite a ways from the Final Spin. Still anyone's game. Dr. Uzuki, you'll start this round.
