KillZone 2 - part one never existed

Don't think there was an official thread for this for some reason, but I guess everyone still likes fantasy FPS games where you shoot plasmas and rays to the head but for some reason the enemy is able to take ten more shots.
Well Killzone is more like cod4 but in the far, phar future with explosions, and bullets, and graphics.

Well reason I created this thread now is because I pre-ordered Killzone 2 and I just recieved the email from gamestop for my demo download. So if there's anyone else out there who got it too and feels like playing some deuce'.
Woops turns out the demo isn't accesible until the 5th =p see you then
If you didn't get the demo yet then I guess I'll see you when the game officially comes out.

PSN names are already in the Multiplayer Arena but just in case I don't have you on my list for some reason my PSN is AniZeke

GuyWhoThanksYou Feb 2, 2009 10:58 PM

If the game is even half as good as most people are saying, I'll probably pick it up. Just juggle that and SF IV.

map car man words telling me to do things Feb 3, 2009 05:38 AM

What, Killzone is nothing like CoD4, the enemies still take a bunch of bullets in the face before dying.

It's really a lot like Resistance in terms of pacing and scripted sequences. Looks ace though.

Jessykins Feb 3, 2009 06:44 AM

Is anybody else annoyed by games where a headshot isn't a fucking one-hit kill? This isn't a god damned RPG. BULLET IN BRAIN, YOU FALL DOWN.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Feb 3, 2009 06:59 AM

That always catches me out in Gears of War too. I'll shoot three guys in the head in quick succession Rainbow style and they'll all still be running towards me. :(

map car man words telling me to do things Feb 3, 2009 07:20 AM

I dunno if it's my aim or the rifle in use, but I managed to pull off a bunch of lucky (and very satisfying) headshots with the new rifle in Gears 2, but other times when I was certain I hit them in the head, I apparently didn't. The exploding head is always nice.

It's far more annoying when a game uses one of those exaggerated reaction animations that cause more trouble than they're worth. Aiming for the chest and hitting an arm, triggering the required overdone reaction animation, usually causing the enemy's other hand to get in the way, triggering the same animation again. I could literally waste dozens of bullets into a pirate in Uncharted because the game decided I'm constantly hitting an arm and shooting someone in both arms six times apparently doesn't drop them.

Killzone 2 has some of that, but luckily not too much to frustrate. You can bring down a few guys easily, other times spend two clips and the guy still won't die. At least they are wearing heavy clothing/armor, so it's somewhat more plausible.

Shenlon Feb 3, 2009 07:42 AM

I haven't gotten to play any of the game yet so I was just going by what I saw in videos so I just assumed that maybe shooting bullets near the head area would get quicker kills which is what I did for cod4 but I'm guessing it took a page from mgo in which you have to empty a whole clip with body shots.
Have to try it for myself to see difference

OmagnusPrime Feb 3, 2009 08:35 AM

I've got this on pre-order (especially since Play.com have it up for £30) and I'm hoping it's as fun to play as it looks from the videos. To be honest I'm not expecting anything amazing, just a very good looking solid shooter, so here's hoping it delivers.

I am very interested to play with the multiplayer aspect though, the Warzone concept sounds ace, and I like the sound of the CoD4 inspired badges and being able to build your own custom classes.

eprox1 Feb 3, 2009 09:59 AM

If anyone cares, you can preorder from Amazon and get $5 off with free shipping using coupon KZ2SAVE5.

You won't get a code for a free demo, but instead a code for some free exclusive Home content. Whoopee.

For those of you who preordered from Gamespot, will the free demo codes work on more than one machine? Does anybody want to share their demo code with me if it does :(?

Shenlon Feb 3, 2009 11:20 AM

Actually I think once you use up the code it becomes invalid after that for everyone trying to use it. Atleast thats how the LBP and Resistence codes were.
Your best bet is if you get it off of someones account and share it that way.

eprox1 Feb 3, 2009 11:52 AM

Ah well.

I remember I got a key from Dizzy to get into the LBP beta, but it might have simply been an extra key as opposed to the same one...

Once you guys get the demo I want to hear some impressions. Previews from the major sites have been nothing but positive, but I'd rather hear the opinion of a gamer consumer rather than a gamer journalist.

OmagnusPrime Feb 5, 2009 08:54 AM

For anyone in Europe, or with a European PSN account, the Killzone 2 demo is going up today at 5pm GMT (source).

Shenlon Feb 5, 2009 11:08 AM

It's up for download already in the EU account. For some stupid reason my code isn't working so I'm giving it a dl from my eu name

OmagnusPrime Feb 5, 2009 11:53 AM

Well I've kicked off the demo, but in the tradition of new releases on the PSN it has gone precisely nowhere so far (0% FTW -_-).

Shenlon Feb 5, 2009 12:02 PM

That's funny because it downloaded like in less than 30 min for me. Already installed, I'll try it later though

OmagnusPrime Feb 5, 2009 12:04 PM

How odd. In fairness it's probably not helped by the fact I'm downloading the Halo Wars demo on my 360 at the same time, but even so.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Feb 5, 2009 12:05 PM

Your router is clearly an Xbox fanboy.

Krelian Feb 5, 2009 12:32 PM

Gonna grab the demo now. Cheers for the heads-up, guys.

Shenlon Feb 5, 2009 06:46 PM

Demo has no Online Play whatsoever.
Single Player on the other hand was really nice, Played through it three times to get used to the controls. Small tip if your a fan of cod4, change the control settings to "Alternate 2" and turn on "Hold Zoom", the controls will feel a lot more familiar this way

Krelian Feb 5, 2009 06:52 PM

Shortest demo ever.

Damned pretty game, but not as impressive as I thought it would be. The colour design was quite nice... It's refreshing to see a modern console FPS that isn't entirely chock full of brown and bloom. I think I'm more wowed by the animation and the palette than any kind of photorealism they were aiming for.

I'll wait to see people bitch about the quality of the full game before I make a decision. Shortest demo EVER. And they had the gall to put in a "level select" menu. :(

That's not at all surprising, since they had a multiplayer beta running a while back. I thought it was fairly well known this was just a single player demo.

Anyways, I've not had a chance to try it yet because the download was running so friggin slow I gave up and paused it so I could play Left 4 Dead without horrific lag. Left it downloading overnight though so I'll give it a whirl after work today.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Feb 6, 2009 04:41 AM

This is one of the worst demos ever.

And before you say it, no, not because of the game, but because of the content. Or lack there of.

This isn't a demo. It shouldn't be marketed or passed off as such. It's a teaser for those who already preordered the damn thing. I can understand now why they handed this out as PO bonuses. There's no one to convince of anything here, and this sampling, if you can call it that, doesn't go out of it's way to do that.

KZ2 still doesn't have me sold. I was neutral towards it going into this thing...and this has made me even MORE so, if that's possible. All I got was a face full of gorgeous looking but typical dull-tutorial style encounters that didn't teach me a damn thing I didn't already know, and it's unfortunate.

I was hoping to have my mind swayed one way or another and instead I'm left wondering if this flavourless morsel is indicative of the final product or not. Is this because it's no good or because the portion is so small you can't actually pick up anything? It's hard to tell since it's so short that no one's gleaned a GOD DAMN THING from playing it.

Even though I didn't play it, listening to Skills' adventures in taking 3 and a half hours to download (and install. What the fuck, it couldn't install while downloading?) a 14-minute demo left me wholly unimpressed.

I don't have a PS3 but could someone illuminate me on whether or not that's typical of demos on that system? Because that's just WRONG.

OmagnusPrime Feb 6, 2009 03:57 PM

Download times on the PSN are a matter of pot-luck, sometimes it can actually be rather speedy, by then you'll get others (typically popular downloads when they first hit) that just crawl along.

russ Feb 6, 2009 04:44 PM

The best part is when you get a new game that has an (18 mb) title update on it, which takes an hour to download, before you even get to install it. That is standard operating procedure for PSN. But remember guys: the PSN is so much better than Xbox Live because it is free!

Ok, this post assumes that you actually get any games for the console, because that is, quite frankly, not a given.

DesertEase Feb 6, 2009 04:59 PM

I started the download yesterday during my lunch break and went back to work, so luckily by the time I got home all I had to do was install it.

eprox1 Feb 9, 2009 01:20 AM

Just tried out the demo.

Amazing graphics. I like how somebody from my squad yells 'Nice headshot!' when I snipe somebody from across the field with my pistol. Little details like that go a long way.

As much fun as it was, I did have a couple gripes (most probably having to do with my TV) -

- I want to map my buttons. I'm using Alternate 2, but I cannot stand holding down the L1 + L2 buttons at the same fucking time, and it makes me never want to use the cover system. I also hope there is at least the option to toggle/lock the crouch/cover buttons.

- Is the menu supposed to be floating/moving...? Whenever I scroll up and down, I get this weird blurry feedback that goes in a horizontal line across my screen, slowly moving down. Probably my TV, but just weird...

- Controls seemed a little unresponsive, but I think it could again just be the terrible delay with my TV

- I've read this from some reviews, but your character really is kind of short

- Opening dialogue of the demo is just...cheesy. "WHOA." "THIS IS FUCKED UP." It wasn't just the dialogue, either. The voice actors seemed a little too unenthusiastic for being in the middle of a war zone. I hope it isn't filled with that shit.

...

Still, it looks like a solid title, and is definitely a day one purchase for me. Can't wait.

OmagnusPrime Feb 9, 2009 02:33 AM

The menu did have an effect on it that made it sort of come in an out of focus, it's like an unstable transmission or something like that. I actually really liked the effect they put on the menus, I thought it was quite neat.

As for the controls, they did feel a little sluggish at first, but then I went into the menu and turned up the sensitivity a little, and it felt fine.

Did you sit in front of your TV and watch the percentage bar or what?

The demo was okay, it was meant to show you the gameplay, the graphics, the controls and so on. Seriously, what's up with you guys expecting hours of gameplay from a demo?

Well, it's good to hear that it wasn't just my TV.

Is that blurry moving horizontal line supposed to be there as well...? It only appears when I move through the menu. If I am still, it disappears.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Feb 9, 2009 04:24 PM

Your TV is fine man, don't worry about it.

Dagobert Feb 10, 2009 12:07 AM

I played the demo and damn it was nice. The graphics are nice, and I like how the bodies don't fade away when you kill someone. Is it just me or do some of the walls break off when you keep shooting at it? Like actually breaks off and not just particles flying around. I tried it the second time and it didn't work, so either I was imagining it (doubt it) or it was a bug. No matter what, it was cool.

Kilroy Feb 10, 2009 12:22 PM

Well, while visiting Guerilla, they did show a video of someone blasting a kitchen to hell, with tiles and stuff coming of pillars, so I don't think you imagined it. They seem to have packed in a ridiculous amount of effects.
Spoiler:
IIRC, during some of the last levels, a Helghast refinery of some kind, there's literally hundreds of light sources. Like, the eyes on some mechanical drones in the background casts realistic light.
Spoiler:
And then you get to use the Helghast lightning gun, which throws even more light and stuff into the bowl and stirs it around...

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Feb 10, 2009 03:17 PM

It's superficial terrain deformation. The actual structure doesn't change, but bits and pieces fly about to give the illusion of totally destructible environments. Usually it's an additional layer on some of the geometry that's breakable.

It's a common thing these days, actually. Lots of games do it. Although no where near as pretty or with as much visual variety.

I won't only play that one game I'll use it for blue ray but just wanted to know if it's worth it to buy a ps3 rather than just a blue ray player based on killzone 2.

The demo looks pretty promising and there is a lot of hype about this game.

I already have a PS3, but if I were in your position, I'd probably think that now is a good time to get one - not only because of Killzone 2, but because there are a lot of good games comin' out in the next few weeks (like RE5 or SF4).

Well yeah I mean if you're offering, then I'd be more than glad to take you up on your offer. Send me one. Right now. Otherwise you've broken my heart.

I actually played through the demo again a few days ago, this time with the control scheme closer to that of the recent Call of Duty games, and the HUD turned off - seriously, I was impressed by how much more I enjoyed it. I noticed things like the screen leaning while I was behind cover, and shit rocking like crazy whenever EXPLOSIONS happened. Also, things like the little bits of destructible scenery were all the more apparent without anything cluttering the screen.

This may well be the most immersive console FPS I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Ernge Juice Feb 13, 2009 05:04 PM

I purchased the 160gb ps3 and looked for the demo on the market place but can't seem to find it. Is there a code or something you have to put it? Sorry if this is already covered.

Single Elbow Feb 13, 2009 05:10 PM

The euro demo is out.

Also I think you can access the demo when you preorder the game. There's nothing on the PSN regarding a KZ2 demo otherwise.

Thanks, waited the whole hour to play it and was well worth the wait (and the 600 bucks). Can't wait for this game to come out, it's going to be an epic win. Blows gow2 and cod5 and halo3 out of the water, and I'm what you can consider a xbl fanboy.

You're what I'd consider to be an idiot. There's fuck all reason to come out with a statement like that, especially when you have chuff all in the way of evidence to back it up. The demo is incredibly short, and gives you only the faintest taste of what you might get in the full games. So please, do us a favour and bottle the bullshit.

Shenlon Feb 14, 2009 08:29 AM

I basically went through the demo testing out different control settings so it wouldn't feel slow and heavy and you pretty much have to put the sensitivity settings all the way up in order to get rid of the sluggish controls. I was going more of cod4 type feel in this case.

Okay, maybe there was a little to excitement from purchasing a ps3, playing kz2 demo, and wanting it to be great for the 600 bucks I spent yesterday. I apologize for the rash remark of a demo being better than full fledged games. If it's not to late to restate; I would like to say it was a wonderful demo that gave me the sense this game will be an amazing first person shooter. I also think the three main shooters are going to have tough competition when kz2 comes out.

Btw whats with all the swearing? Couldn't you have said the same thing in a better tone or is there some overwhelming anger for someone who thought this demo was great?

OmagnusPrime Feb 14, 2009 10:49 AM

First of all you're wrong, it's not a wonderful demo, it's an incredibly meager demo that just about gives you a taste for Killzone. That's not to say it isn't enjoyable, I too played it and I too liked what I played, but I'm more than happy to admit that it was an incredibly small sample that you really can't form many opinions from one way or the other (outside of it looks damn pretty and the dialogue is pretty cliché).

More than anything I hate the idiotic assertion that these games have to be in competition with each other. I own Call of Duty 4 (fuck CoD5, WWII CoD4 rip-off from Treyarch that it is), Gears of War 2 and Halo 3, and I'm picking up Killzone 2. Why they hell do we have to try and put them in opposition to one another? Answer: we don't. That kind of bullshit is something a fanboy comes out with, and frankly we don't need more of those, and certainly not more of those moronic statements.

If you want to partake in sensible discussion, cool, let's do that. If all you want to do is indulge in spouting hyperbole and nonsense to justify your own purchasing decisions then take it elsewhere.

As for the swearing, it has nothing to do with anger, and everything to do with contempt.

Karasu Feb 14, 2009 02:21 PM

Omag...calm down though, its his opinion. No matter how ignorant his opinion is to you, just let him be. There's no need to your titties twisted over it. Seriously.

I also have CoD4, and in terms of graphics KZ2 does blow CoD4 out of the water. However when it comes to multiplayer and single player, I can't judge yet.

Single Elbow Feb 16, 2009 12:53 AM

That's the thing. It's ONLY visually appealing. Otherwise it is just generic.

Also, to echo Pang's sentiments: no one gives a flying fuck about your t-shirts, so either post them in your journal where they can be ignored, or don't post them at all because we just don't care.

For some reason, I find Killzone 2 on Veteran almost harder than Halo 3 on Legendary.
Jesus Christ, some levels are diablolic.

Shenlon Feb 27, 2009 10:35 PM

anybody get this game yet, I just played a bit and got to the second level.
So far its a good ride. Oh and its loud, its very loud. There are bombs and bullets going off every second, everyone is yelling and I'm just glad for subtitles.
Not going to hit up Multiplayer until I'm finished with single player so I can get used to the controls so if anyone is enjoying this enough we could hit up some games.
Overall, its a loud, fancy looking shooter thats an alternative to call of duty 4. Although you have to put up the sensitivity for a less sluggish move like mentioned before

Kilroy Mar 4, 2009 02:21 PM

So, multiplayer is addicting like crack cocaine (I think, never did do drugs)
After having played Body Count (Team Deathmatch if you don't speak Killzone) a lot, I finally became a General, which means I can turn invisible. YES.
I think the classes works great, though some TF2-dudes'll probably say that TF2 does it much better.

--

My preorder from Amazon finally arrived last night. I only got to play it for literally about 10 minutes, playing half of the first level (pretty much what the demo was), and a single online match.

I’m surprised that the controls feel so different between the two – although this could all change now with the patch. I'm interested to see exactly how much the ‘feel’ of the gameplay has changed after the patch. I’ll see later tonight, maybe.

Still, what an awesome game. I can see myself getting consumed in the online multiplayer, even though I pretty much suck ass.

Kilroy Mar 7, 2009 09:51 AM

I'm still satisfied with Killzone, though I must admit that an endless flood of enemies is perhaps one of the worst design decissions ever made.
First I spent 20 minutes under Salamun Bridge, shooting Helghast soldiers. I could not advance, because of the endless amount of grenades. I sit behind a wall, popping shots at soldiers with my pistol, because I've got no ammo for any other weapon. I die. My sixaxis almost breaks and blood must've shot from my eyeballs in anger.
I go online looking for the answer. Some guys says "lol go for the staffolding at the left side". I make it.

Today at the train, ENDLESS soldiers and a fucking tank.

Shenlon Mar 7, 2009 10:21 AM

Speaking of Endless enemies.

Last Level:
Spoiler:
In the very last assault to the castle, if you don't have the guts to keep moving forward while taking down enemies, you will literally be fighting a never ending battle. They just keep respawning for as long as it takes. I found this out the hard way, when I kept dying I just got pissed and just ran and gunned everyone in my way and realized right there that your troops won't move forward until you do. You have to fight for every piece of ground until you reach the fortress.

I made the mistake of trying out multiplayer before I finished the campaign - I probably won't be touching the single player again until I am absolutely sick of the multiplayer, which I don't think will be anytime soon.

Do people even know that you can make 4 man squads in this game? I rarely see any, and it seems like they can really make a difference in a game since you can spawn on your squad leader and all...

...and is there a button that will bring up the entire levels map? It seems like there should be.

I actually tried searching for the clan but guess what, I couldn't find it because I couldn't find a search tool for clans. All I can do is see rankings and whatnot.
Finally started to go online and pretty much fighting against people around my level and it turned out that I sucked badly. I was able to get more kills than deaths though, so I guess I must be doing something right.
I'm just trying to get the badge for snipers since those looks like tons of fun

Just started this last night. Is it just me, or is the deadzone on the controls ridiculously large?

I'll be on later tonight if anyone wants to play. In regards to the Clan, I think I remember reading that the clan leader needs to send out invites to join.

Well, if anything the deadzone is apparently not as large as it initially was before the 1.20 patch was released...but I don't play too many FPS games, so I guess I don't really notice it.

The only thing that bothers me is the delay (which I still can't tell if it's a hardware issue or not). I crank the stick to the right, and there's a noticeable difference between the sound of the stick hitting the edge of the controller and the actual movement of the gun. Pretty annoying, but I'm still having a lot of fun with the online multiplayer.

Ever since I suicide bombed 4 guys in a narrow hallway, I've been doing that a lot now. Sucks, cause I don't seem to be able to pull that off as effectively as I did the first time, and my suicide count is starting to get ridiculous (for as few games as I have played, anyways).

As for the clan, there's Aardark and there's me so far. For everyone else, just post your nick and I will invite you :) I will probably be on tonight as well!

Jinryuu10

I'm up for joining the Gamingforce clan. Sounds fun.

I finally hit General today, but I haven't had the chance to really try out Scout yet. So many hours spent on multiplayer, but I'll probably finish single player tonight.

I'm not so great either but practice makes perfect right, and maybe playing in squads will be fun.
I just sent you a friend invite like two days ago i think as AniZeke

Oh, that's cool, I didn't realise you could spawn on the squad leader, I thought it was just another tactician ability. I think people do use squads a lot, at least I get squad invites all the time in the games I play.

Seriously don't know how some of you have gotten like 4000 points on this already, I'm struggling just to get 500. Did you guys spend a shit load of hours on this or are you just that damn good.
I'm lucky to get 15 or 20 kills in a match. And at what level do you the sniper rifle?

I was averaging about 4-6 hours a day over Spring Break (away from my PS3 now, since I'm back at college).

Still, it gets easier to rank up as you rank up, because it's a lot easier to maximize your points. Kills aren't the only way you get points. Whenever you revive someone (Medic), whenever you fix up a machine gun turret or ammo box (Engineer), whenever an automatic turret you set up gets a kill on your behalf (Engineer), etc. - that's +1.

Add to the fact that whenever you get mission medals, it increases the number of points you get for that mission. I think you get +3 in Body Count for every kill instead of +2 (+1 for the kill, +1 for it being during Body Count, +1 for having the Body Count Medal [forget what it's called]).

And, of course, the weapons you get later add to the fun. I love playing as Saboteur with his SMG. Spits out a lot of bullets in a short time, and it makes it easier (to me) to get headshots.

Finally, play longer games. By playing longer games, you get more points, and you can benefit from the 1.5x bonus if your side wins. I think I was sitting around 100-150 in my best games; 20-40 in my worst (trying to level up classes I don't care for - I hate the Engineer and his shotgun).

I think I was sitting between 35-50 kills a match, though. But, you'll get more kills the more you play; I was getting the same amount of kills as you when I was your rank, so I guess Killzone 2 is just weighted more towards higher ranks when it comes to points.

And, you get the Sniper Rifle when you hit General (2800 points or something).

Musharraf Mar 17, 2009 11:56 AM

Yeah d00d, try to play more Body Count missions. Also, use the rocket launcher. It's a little bit lame because this weapon is clearly overpowered, but who car3z

So. . . .my friend just got a ps3 with kz2. I tried to send him an invite to the room I was in only to find that there is no Invite option. Not only that but when i tried to join the room he was in, it either turns out I cant join because we're not the same rank or we can't join the same team because of the autobalance system. And when you try to join a room it doesn't show the options of that room before you decide to join that room.
Seriously I don't know why a game such as this, with such a popular online community, doesn't have an Invite option.
