Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix) Definitely more Adam West than Christian Bale, but fun nonetheless. It's got fine melody and rhythm, and doesn't overplay the disco trappings.

Home Alone (NES Game Rip) - House Surprisingly accomplished chiptuney rock/jazz tune. The composer wrings an awful lot out of the hardware; this'd be a strong contender if the BCC is ever revived.

Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements Mass Effect bucks the trend toward full-on space opera in Western game scores, presenting instead a heady electronic cocktail with some acoustic aspects. The pulsing electronic beat, bright melody, and dashes of color make this a good representative of the OST and a terrific tune in its own right.

Midnight Resistance (Genesis Game Rip) - Flood of Power (BGM 1) More chiptype action, this time with with a much more serious but no less accomplished sound. The synth runs really make the piece, and mesh well with the driving beat and melody.

Mr. Nutz (SNES Game Rip) - Ice Scream I have to admit I was expecting something more...nutty? The music is fine in its laid-back way, but frankly seems kind of dull (which may be an effect of the expectations I had from reading the title).

OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix- This, on the other hand, sounded exactly as I thought it would. Luckily it quickly expands from the basic trance sound to encompass a more expansive and melodic sound. Sure, there are some trance tropes scattered about (hello sudden cuts and synth washes!) but the package as a whole is so well-presented that it's hard to grumble.

Space Megaforce (Game Rip) - Black Hole Anomalies This sounds like it was the victim of botched MP3Gaining of the sort I inadvertently unleashed on the BDC--or perhaps it just needed a good gaining in the first place. It's an okay piece all around, with a nice bit of jazzy funk, but the volume was a definite minus.

Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space) A very spacy week, this! This is rather like Flood of Power in construction, but with a more bright sound and a slower tempo. Good stuff all around.

An excellent week, where the worst sin was mild boredom. Most of these could easily triumph in a lesser week, methinks. Allocation was tough, very tough.

The Point Spread
Criminal Elements - 3 pts.
House - 1 pt.
Flood of Power - 1 pt.
The Void of Space - 1 pt.
Just missed: Last Regrets, Caped Crusader

Yeah, I'm not sure what happened that the Space Megaforce song is so ridiculously quiet, but that needs to be fixed.

Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix) It's funky, alright. I remember playing this game on my Commodore just for the music. I never beat it though I came pretty close. This track is a faithful arrangement with some improvements in the bass and the mid-range synths. That I was going to nominate it soon only speaks further for this piece.

Home Alone (NES Game Rip) - House: I hold chiptunes to a high standard and this one fell slightly short for me. The melody is good but I found the choice of sounds to be too shrill and the bassline to be extremely rudimentary. For a title that came out late in the NES's lifespan, I honestly expect better harmony between layers.

Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements: This was a lot better than I expected, which was largely a dull, atmospheric drone. The tension is very palpable but not so overpowering that it becomes a typical march. I loved the blippy synth effects in the background - nicely understated. A decent track.

Midnight Resistance (Genesis Game Rip) - Flood of Power (BGM 1): Some higher quality Genesis music. Yay! The melody is great and the composer paced it very well. There's a lot of positive synergy between the samples used. Makes me want to track the game down and play it. Nice choice.

Mr. Nutz (SNES Game Rip) - Ice Scream: This one manages to use the better half of the SNES's sound card's capabilities, though I felt the tempo was a lttle sluggish. I imagine this would have a larger impact if heard at 1.5 times its current speed. It's not bad but I think the pace needs to match the tone.

OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix- Nothing to criticize here. It's spacey, upbeat and energetic. That's the trifecta for me. This one's a keeper.

Space Megaforce (Game Rip) - Black Hole Anomalies: Overlooking the volume issue, this is pretty good. There's an oh-so slight Latin rhythm, but it changes things up fairly frequently and offers up a pretty groovy ride.
If someone could find or supply a copy of this with improved volume, that would be wonderful.

Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space): This one starts up auspiciously and doesn't disappoint throughout. I like the tone a lot - it's kind of spacey but not - and the melody is wonderful. Great energy and great sound. It has a lot of competition this week but definitely deserves a placement.

I usually find funk extremely accessible, and Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix) is no exception to that rule. Love the funk, though none of the melodies took my fancy, sadly. Still, an enjoyable track overall.

Home Alone (NES Game Rip) - House definitely has some piercing elements and sounds, but the composition itself is good, so I'm happy! The start to each loop is incredibly catchy and cool and things remain fairly entertaining from there. I'd be surprised if any melody this week beat the melody showcased at the start of this one!

Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements has some awesome electronic beats, and they create a wonderful, metropolis kind of atmosphere. The melody is a bit disapppointing however; it could've done with some more variation and punch, I think. But you've gotta appreciate a piece which conjures an atmosphere so effortlessly and skillfully.

When I listen to Midnight Resistance (Genesis Game Rip) - Flood of Power (BGM 1), I feel like I'm swimming down a FLOOD OF POWER!! Seriously, this is a great track. No complaints from me whatsoever; exciting drive and an ever changing, constantly engaging melody. (I think I just got raped by the FLOOD OF POWER)

Mr. Nutz (SNES Game Rip) - Ice Scream is a really lifeless tune, huh? It seems it just recycles a bunch of dull melodic lines back and forth to limited effect. It definitely needs a quirky edge or a more tangible icy vibe. As it stands, I don't like it. (sorry nom, not my cup of tea!)

Speaking of tangibility, I had a tough time trying to find and grasp the melody in OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix-, but don't worry I got it! This is just a nice, sunny ray of cheery trance. And that's good in my books!

OMG VOLUME!!! [obligatory] Disregarding that, Space Megaforce (Game Rip) - Black Hole Anomalies is OK. I don't like the A section with the irksome melody, but the B section improves on that considerably with some smooth, catchy transitions and stuff. So yeah, enjoyable, but the first part hurts it.

Similar to FLOOD OF POWER, Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space) is another awesome space tune. I've got no real problems with this one either, although it doesn't engage me as much as teh power. Also, 1:07 rivals "House"'s melody. :gonk: It's just that good.

FLOOD OF POINT POWER

2 points: Verytex (Game Rip) - Act 1 (The Void of Space)
1 point: Mass Effect Original Soundtrack - Criminal Elements

5th: OTSU Club Music Compilation Vol. 1 - Last Regrets -Tsukasa Remix-
6th: Back in Time II - Batman the Caped Crusader (Radio funk mix)
7th: Space Megaforce (Game Rip) - Black Hole Anomalies
8th: Mr. Nutz (SNES Game Rip) - Ice Scream

I struggled handing out the points this week, so that means it must have been a good one! I think.

I really should go look for the source material for this remix. I've liked the original since I heard it at one of the earlier BSCs and this remix does a nice job adding more to an already lovely song.

First time I heard The Void of Space's melody, my jaw dropped so hard it dislocated.

Never bothered to check out the Genesis version of Midnight Resistance, but I think I will now, since this version of Flood of Power is better than the original arcade version. Nice one.

Also I have to agree with the sentiments that this is a fairly decent week.

Quick vote! I got back much later than expected today.

I went for a shotgun spread this time. Tons to enjoy!

Darkcomet72 Jan 12, 2009 02:15 AM

This week is crazy.

House is a quaint, inoffensive, merely catchy "nothing special" chiptune that completely redeemed itself with the solo at 0:16 and break at 0:45. I did not see that coming.

Batman is comedy. I don't recognize the source if there is one, but god that melody sucks. And I love it.

The Mass Effect tune makes no sense whatsoever.

Sakimoto did some really good sound conversions for the Genesis, and Flood of Power is one of the examples that's arguably better than the original. No idea on Sakai's role, though, and I'm certain he wasn't one of the original composers.

Unfortunately none of that matters, as I already knew the point spread from just looking at the tracklist.

2 points: Ice Scream
2 points: Black Hole Anomalies
2 points: The Void of Space
(this is the only correct point spread)

What makes this week truly insane is that both Black Hole Anomalies and The Void of Space were very high on my own nomination list. Hell, those 2 sound more like something I would nominate than my own nom does.

Can you point out the minutes:seconds where those effects appear? I want to understand better what you technically mean at all. I declare that it's not a prestage for further discussion of this matter. Does this declaration make me even more suspicious?

I was surprised to see that the original song (Kanon - Last Regrets) made an entry in the BSC 2004(!) when I sorted out this contest not long ago. I didn't really notice it at that time. Probably the best Key vocal song.

Uh, all I meant was that the music has aspects of a trance song. Trance isn't a genre I'm particularly fond of--hence the mention of it in a negative context--but I enjoyed the song overall and gave it an honorable mention.
