Where is the Spectrum option. Fucking fanboy bias.
One day we'll put all the fanboys into a room with assorted weapons and then ask this question, leaving them to kill each other. The fanboys will get to live out their retarded fight, and the world would be down a collection of morons. |
Why is there no Dreamcast option on this poll.

Also, the C64 is up there twice now Crash, I hear Dreamcast ownership will do that to a persons mind. |
You just don't know that they're secretly waiting to drop the Dreamcast 2 and blow everyone out the fucking water.

Yeah well when nerds rule the world I'm sure the Dreamcast will crop up in every poll ever made. Who do you pick for president? Republican, Democrat or Dreamcast. Please fill in your religion for the census, Christian, Muslim, Jew or Dreamcast, etc. etc. etc.

No wonder you don't like classic gaming, you've never actually played on a decent console. That and since you're in the UK, gaming unilaterally decided to give you no games ever. Of course if you had a Dreamcast you could have just emulated all those awesome, nigh unattainable games right out of the box. Because it's awesome like that. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...lis/Photo8.jpg But how do you wrap your brain around a concept as awesome as the Dreamcast? How do you define the awesomeness of the Dreamcast? O Yeah. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...in_f-14s-1.jpg Dreamcast. Yeah, it's kind of like that. |
Hey, we got plenty of gaming awesome on the Dreamcast over here in the UK. I personally got quite a lot of Dreamcast gaming awesome for free, and ahead of release, which was even more awesome. Sort of like a T-Rex piloting a fighter plane, only more awesome. And free.
|
Dreamcast was awesome. Unfortunately, I lent over half my games to a friend while I was gone for the past few years and haven't been able to get them back. I have seen him and he said something like when playing Virtura Tennis, the game takes a long time to load.
|
I had some unexpected fun games for the dreamcast and it turned out to be the party system when my friends came over.
My Dreamcast Finally felt it's end when a spoiled kid came over and wanted one. When he couldn't have mine's, he threw a shit load of orange soda directly on it and killed it. Dreamcast, the stuff jealousy is made of ;_; |
Dreamcast was a great system. You didn't even have to buy games for it.
|
"Dreamcast: How many times can you say 'awesome' in a single post"
Motherfucking Armada was where it was at. Shmup/RPG-hybrids should be done way more often. |
I might as well throw my hat into the "I have had a Dreamcast since 9/9/99" ring.
That said, would anyone like a Dreamcast? Seriously? |

Chu Chu Rocket was kinda fun for an afternoon, the Powerstone games were great and the Bass Fishing thing with the silly rod attachment was mildly amusing I guess but that's about it as far as Dreamcast games being anything special goes and that's certainly not enough to warrant buying one, especially given the continued output of great games for the Playstation at the time with the added bonus that the PS controller wasn't so big it had it's own gravity field. I also suspect that the ability to pirate games right out of the box went a long way to the death of the format and it seems a little backwards to champion a console that you personally contributed to the death of by never paying for any software. And what the fuck Dreamcast is classic gaming? What are you, twelve years old? Classic gaming is Spectrums and BBCs and Amstrads, possibly Amigas if you're talking noob classic. Just because you discovered computer games fifteen years later than the rest of the world doesn't make the games you discovered classic, Johnny-come-lately. |
I voted PS3. But in all fairness, had I read the whole list, I'd have voted for the Dreamcast.
Nothing beats Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, and Marvel vs Capcom 2... oh, and Rival Schools, Dead or Alive 2, Ikaruga, etc etc. Granted, a lot of these games were ported later, but I still have such great memories of this system. |
Quote:
Also Shin, whilst I agree with you on what constitutes classic gaming, you need to admit the Dreamcast was awesome already. We know it, you know it, and we know you know it, so just admit it. :p |
I'm not going to admit that a console that was chiefly responsible for the dramatic collapse of one of gaming's most succesful companies was either awesome or popular.
Like I said, it was ok and there were a couple of good games but there weren't enough that weren't later released on a different platform, the controllers were horrific and nobody ever paid for any software anyway, despite proclaiming it the greatest piece of gaming hardware mankind has ever produced, thereby dooming their own champion and proving that Dreamcast owners were all basically retarded. I mean, what kind of a sports team fan would you be if you shoplifted this year's shirt rather than bought one? The shitty kind that doesn't get invited to parties, that's what. |
This thread needs less serious and more people taking silly pictures of their Dreamcasts.
Really, Shin. Step back a second and look at the topic you are debating. This is pathetic. |
This makes me want to track down some cords and controllers for the Dreamcast that's just sitting my the drawer (I took mine out to lunch on it's 10th birthday a few months back). I so wanted to mod the lights/casing a bit but I think I'll leave it the way it is.

The controller was still awful and I'm glad gamers succesfully killed the console and Sega with it. Now they can fully focus on Sonic ga.. ys.
I own two. |
Pics or your ownership didn't happen.

Really, I have nothing against the Dreamcast and did enjoy playing on my mate's from time to time but the fact is, the format was a failure to such an extent it made Sega give up on hardware altogether. I assumed all this time it was because nobody ever bought one but GFF has proved me wrong and actually, it looks like I genuinely am in the minority for not owning one which in turn has left me confused as to why it was such a collosal failure and I am now merely seeking enlightenment. And just because some emulator people call games classic, does not mean that's some legal definition or anything. Classic gaming, for those of us who are old enough to remember when you had to type in twentyfive pages of BASIC to play a crappy maze game or load things in on a tape that often didn't work properly onto a computer with less processing power than your average modern microwave is not the Dreamcast, it's the Spectrum, or the BBC or the Amiga and no amount of emulator sites proclaiming Tomb Raider 2 as "Classic" gaming will persuade me otherwise. It's a subjective term and like all subjective terms, it is open to misuse by noobs it seems. I'm not trying to be too serious Tails, I was enjoying the pictures of Dreamcasts that hate me. =( |
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Me/IMG372.jpg
Only have an old pic of one of them, they are both gathering dust in a box kept in a storage room cause I couldn't bring them with me to where I live :( Obviously european blue swirl is much cooler than dodgy orange naruto...... |
>=O FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF yours has a blue swirl? Looks much better than the red one. Of course this could just be bias since Blue is my favorite color.
Also Shin I'm really just pointing out that our attempt to gangrail a terrible thread into "LOL DREAMCAST R TEH BEST" territory got sidetracked when you came in with your serious business and stick-in-the-mud attitude. Can we get you to do that a little less? We all know SEGA bombed and haha oh man their PR department but really though. Someone else follow Q's example now. |
Sorry, I didn't realise I was coming across so serious. :(

Now onto the points that didn't come up yet. It didn't play DVDs, the PS2 did. That made the PS2 a two-for-one deal for many gamers. I know lots of people who bought it because it was a reasonably priced DVD player that also played games. If ya can only afford one, that's a massive black mark against the DC. Then you have to consider the games. It's not that they sucked, it's that the best ones had to compete against better known examples on other consoles. How is any RPG going to compete with Final Fantasy for the casual market? How is any racing simulator going to complete with Gran Turismo? How is any game going to compete with Grand Theft Auto? When I say 'the casual market' I don't mean that in the modern, pejoritive sense of 'casual gamers', I mean anyone who doesn't look at their paycheck and think "Hey, what games could I buy with that?" The casual buyer doesn't buy a lot of games. He doesn't know a lot of games. He buys what is advertised on TV, and what all his friends will be playing. I'd guess he rarely buys more than a dozen games for a system, at least a couple of which will be sports and driving games. He's not going to choose Skies of Arcadia, Metropolis Street Racer and Shenmue. He's going to choose Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto. Not because the first three choices aren't worth playing, but because the latter three are safe options. He knows the franchises, he knows his friends will be playing too, he knows it will be familiar and entertaining fare. The first three are just names he doesn't know, and doesn't want to waste money finding out about, just in case they suck. Incidentally I know perfectly well that Shenmue is a poor comparison for Grand Theft Auto, but really I think it is the closest to a similar 'Open World' game on Dreamcast. I didn't even try to think of an equivalent for Metal Gear Solid, but it is another example of a known series pitted against games of unknown quality and content. It's not that Dreamcast games sucked, it's that the casual buyer always has and always will be the majority of gaming revenue. tl;dr version: Dreamcast failed in the eyes of the casual buyer while succeeding with the hardcore. It was a collossal failure in commercial terms, and not entirely perfect in idealistic, technological terms. Had some nice games though. Just not well publicised or well-known enough to penetrate the living room of the average joe. I own two, one PAL, one NTSC-U/C and a large collection of games, so I'm not really a hater, I just know why it failed. |
This is missing from the list.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ips_CD-i-2.jpg I may only have 6 games on my Dreamcast and about 10 demo discs, but those were definitely good times. :sega: |

Damn that's some lovely packaging man. Props for SoA of course. And oh man Virtua Tennis. That brings back memories. I think that's like the only reason I bought Sega Superstar Tennis cause it reminds me of the arcade-ish playstyle VT had.
Top Spin can't even touch it. Also loooool VMUs. Such a good idea. Such terrible, terrible execution. |
I wish i could post pics but alas, I only have memories now. Memories of how loud it was that I had to put a pile of clothing on top of the DC in order to filter out the incredibly loud disc spinning in the early mornings. Reaching my thumb across the border in order to reach the flimsy Y button.
Oh and I was one of the few people who actually bought games for it I guess because believe it or not I did not have the internets or a PC until 2002 and therefore I thought burning disc was magic. But I proudly owned all my disc especially granida 2 which came with the awesome OST |

I didn't like the implication of piracy, and I still don't. I'm not claiming to have been some sort of sales saviour, I was just saying I liked my DC plenty and was fortunate enough to play quite a lot of games on it thanks to Sega being generous with their review copies (and me being the almost the only gamer with a DC on the student paper). |
I had more fun playing Saturn than Dreamcast. Am I weird?
Seaman was awesome though. |
The DC piracy issue is a double whammy for those of us who bought the retail versions. I bought lots of DC games, but none of them (even the great/rare games) are worth a penny because they can be easily downloaded.
The system would have been ten times cooler if they'd released the twin sticks for Virtual On over here. |

God I need to play that game again. |

Also, I love my DC copy of Grandia II. Almost as much as I love my copy of SoA. |
The Saturn cannot be denied as an excellent system simply because of Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Guardian Heroes. It had its limits for 3D graphics but good god did they pull off some beautiful games anyway.

Yeah but pirating DC games is fuck shit easy compared to other consoles. Most things you've got to mod the console itself or use some cable gimmickry or so on and so on but the DC is just:
1. Burn .cdi file 2. Play So there was essentially no motivation at all to not pirate DC games, and essentially an entire tiny industry sprung up around doing so. And now, of course, the DC is considered abandonware so there's not even the moral element to buying legitimate discs. |

I dont think I ever knew anyone with a Saturn. Maybe one guy but he was the guy with a Mega CD and all those other weird plug-in bits for the Megadrive, overly generous parents too... |

Posting mah DC collection:
First of all, the games. I don't have everything I wanted to get. I'm certainly missing some of the more expensive fighting games for DC, such as Marvel vs. Capcom and the sequel. Rez seems to be worth at least an arm and a leg, too. I got most of the ones I really wanted to play though, and I'm still occasionally adding to the pile via eBay. In amongst all that are two copies of Skies of Arcadia (I don't remember why...) Grandia 2, both Shenmue games, both Evolution games, and an assortment of other good (and occasionally not so good) stuff. I also have (not pictured) a few promo copies from my brief stint reviewing games in a university magazine. The prize of that collection is probably Shenmue 2, the rest of the games we were sent to review were mostly mediocre to rubbish. http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/649...stgamesrz8.jpg Now here's the hardware. One well-used PAL Dreamcast, one well-preserved NTSC-U/C Dreamcast. Both in great condition, with the original boxes, four controllers (two new and boxed) four VMUs, an official keyboard and least but not least, an arcade stick. http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/134...ardwareqg5.jpg I'm pleased with it. I've got more games for most of my other systems, but I really love some of the ones I've got for the Dreamcast. It was a great gaming era. |
Why did you keep two controllers in their boxes? Do you only have one friend?
|
Quote:
Power Stone is great for multiplayer. If you haven't played that with four people, you've missed out. It's funny how the Dreamcast was pretty much the last console where we all got around one big TV. With the PS2 there weren't honestly a lot of multiplayer games that we liked, and with everything since then... online play really is the only way to go. |
Quote:
|
Powerstone was awesome multiplayer, agreed. We were always all about the Micromachines V3 and Tekken though.
|
Micromachines V3 was a fucking riot, but wasn't that like... a Playstation and Nintendo 64 title?
I believe it was called Micro Machines Turbo 64 over here. |
PS1 yeah, but still got regular play in my circle of friends up to a couple of years ago. Playing eight player on the level with the moving lily-pad never grew old.
|
Yeah, Micro Machines 64, just the same game. Was pretty awesome.
But the reason that Sega Saturn was awesome is mostly because of Virtua Fighter and SATURN fucking BOMBERMAN. And six-button controller <3 <3 |
I like how the Dreamcast did keyboards. It was all YO HEY THIS IS A KEYBOARD. And it really was a keyboard.
|
Yeah, none of that miniature controller keyboard shit we got today. Shame it wasn't much use, outside of uh, the web browser (ahahah) and Quake 3: Arena. At least that's all I used mine for.
|
Yeah, the keyboard and mouse were bought for playing Quake 3: Arena, though they also got use in PSO and using the web browser to get me a free copy of ChuChuRocket (<3).

Speaking of Handhelds, anyone remember the Game Gear? Years ago, my dad got one of them for me and I remember playing Sonic a couple times (From my perspective, he seemed to enjoy technology, but also seemed to end up getting the bad stuff, like Laserdiscs or the 32X Add-on for the SegaCD :gonk: ). Of course the thing raped batteries and holy fuck that Sonic game was hard.
Didn't help that the thing finally just broke one time later on, so yeah didn't have it for too long. |
