Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. They should go back and steal the horrible zombie plot

This got a mention in the PS3 thread, but I figured it deserves it's own, you know for rumour, speculation, news and generally going "Woo, Uncharted 2, yay".

Teaser trailer (HD version here):
YouTube Video

I loved me the first Uncharted, I thought it did the adventure/combat/puzzling thing in a really smart way, and looked amazing too, so I'm very excited about this.

Apparently we can expect an annoucement with more details on December 14th.

Some additional info, as I just spotted this on JoyStiq:
Quote:

New information care of Game Informer, which has "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" as its cover story. The game will revolve around Marco Polo's voyages and includes new free climbing and -- gulp -- "stealth" gameplay.

No. Hard Pass. Dec 2, 2008 03:40 AM

The original is easily one of the best games on the PS3. I can't wait for this.

Rockgamer Dec 2, 2008 05:26 PM

I plan to play the original game sometime during my winter break from school, so it's good to know I'll have a sequel to look forward to afterwards.

As someone with just a PS3, how have you not played Uncharted yet? Madness.

Parn Dec 2, 2008 06:15 PM

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was the reason why I picked up a PlayStation 3 in the first place, and it is still my favorite game on the platform. I hope the sequel is just as amazing.

The first Uncharted is pretty much the only triple exclusive that actually lived up to the hype, zombies and shit not withstanding. I fully support the creation of a sequel.

Well I just bought it a few months ago (since I mostly only buy games when they're cheap), and there's just been games I've been wanting to play more (namely LBP). I know it's not much of an excuse (especially since I played the heck out of the demo), but what else can I can say? :p

I am looking forward to it though, which is why I'm waiting until my break to play it instead of playing it now while I'm still being bogged down by schoolwork.

Played Uncharted when it came out and my general impression was "this could've been awesome" but it wasn't, and honestly I still don't know what held it back. Well, I don't remember at least. Hopefully Uncharted 2 corrects whatever the problem was. And if it does, well fuck, I'm looking pretty forward to it.

Also, for that "lived up to its hype" comment, unless I'm remembering wrong, I don't even remember it getting as much hype as some other games on the ps3. Lair seemed to get more hype than Uncharted.

So you thought the game may have had a problem, but don't know what that problem is, but hope that they fix that unknown problem in Uncharted 2, if indeed there was a problem at all. Right. Care to say less with your post?

I'm all for getting involved and taking part, and you are to be commended for that, but come on at least attempt a little substance (post count doesn't mean shit, post content does).

And yes Uncharted was hyped. I mean, of course it was. Uncharted is a great game on the PS3 that is also that rare beast: a PS3 exclusive. Certainly at the time of its release there wasn't much else to show off as a great PS3 exclusive so I recall it getting a fairly decent amount of hype. But thankfully it certainly lives up to it.

Vampiro Dec 16, 2008 07:29 PM

How was that not content? It's my opinion on a game. I haven't played the game since it came out, but I recall it missing something that held it back. Still a great game, just not as great as it should've been. Fuck.

Also, I clearly said it got hype, just not as much as other games. There's a difference between "a decent amount" and a fuckton like Lair got and LittleBigPlanet got. All it had to do was be a good game and it lived up to the hype. That's not saying much.

OmagnusPrime Dec 17, 2008 08:21 AM

Saying something is not the same as having something to say.

And yes, you are correct there is a difference between 'a decent amount' and 'a fuck ton' of hype, however, I don't believe Lair got 'a fuck ton' of anything. It got pretty heavily mocked for having a terrible control system, but that's about it. It certainly didn't receive much hype, at least not over here. Uncharted on the other hand was very much hyped up. No, not as much as LBP, but then very few games have been hyped as much as LBP on any platform, not just the PS3.

Anyways, for people interested in Uncharted 2, there's a decent sized feature on it in this month's Edge magazine (I need to give that a glance over soon), for which it is the cover game.

Vampiro Dec 18, 2008 09:45 AM

Nearly all of PS3's big titles get a lot more hype than they probably should, and since Lair was one of the early games announced for it it got a ridiculous amount of hype. That combined with the fact that it was created by the guys who did Rogue Squadron, and well, people were excited. It wasn't until right near the release and right after that it became a joke of a game. Before that, people were hyping the shit out of it. Uncharted though, thankfully, didn't get quite the same treatment from what I saw. It probably got the right amount actually. Just enough to get people interested, but not enough to make people think it'll be the next gaming revolution.

eprox1 Dec 18, 2008 10:07 AM

I think I remember reading that Uncharted ended up selling around 2 million - I'd say it did pretty well for the amount of hype it received. Granted, I have no idea how many copies of a game need to sell for it to be considered a success (I suppose it all comes down to development cost), but I'm just glad it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

Regardless of how the game was initially hyped, I absolutely loved the first game. My only gripe was that it could have been a little bit longer. Still, the controls were solid, the graphics were amazing, the story was interesting (I actually liked the zombie twist at the end. Totally reminded me of something out of Indiana Jones), and the game had some of the flat out best environments I have ever seen in a game.

Easily the best exclusive Sony has going for it. I only wonder what they're going to do different with this new game.

Megalith Dec 22, 2008 07:33 PM

Uncharted is the best game since HALO, and it is the reason why PS3 is the best console on the market.

Time to give this thread a kick, since there's now news that Uncharted 2 will feature some (up to 3 player) co-op missions and an online multiplayer mode when it hits in November-ish time.

Quote:

Sony has confirmed that Naughty Dog's PS3 action sequel Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will be graced with online multiplayer modes, including co-op.

At a preview event in Los Angeles last week, attended by Eurogamer, Naughty Dog surprised the press by showing deathmatch and 'Plunder' competitive modes for teams of five, and three-player co-op maps based on - but separate from - the single-player adventure. It's a departure for Uncharted; the first game was a strictly solo affair.

Plunder is a capture-the-flag variant in which teams of "heroes" and "villains" compete to find treasure and lug it to safe spots. Deathmatch is a straightforward race to a set kill count.

In the co-op mode shown, players battle through a level dominated by intense combat, occasionally teaming up to overcome physical obstacles.

There will also be a cinema mode similar to Halo 3's Theater, allowing players to record replays and direct the camera, and a linked website offering stats and leaderboards.

For those based in the US there's also news that you'll be able to grab access to the beta with copies of inFamous, the PS3 exclusive sandbox titles coming this summer:

Quote:

Sony has revealed that everyone who buys inFamous in the US will receive a bonus - access to the multiplayer beta test for Uncharted 2.

Announcing the news at an event last week, Nate Fox, creative director of inFamous developer Sucker Punch, said: "We're so excited. Naughty Dog is like a brother studio to us."

Footage of multiplayer in action:
IGN Video: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves PlayStation 3 Trailer - Multiplayer Reveal Trailer

Bought'd. If it's half as interesting as the normal gameplay, I'll be playing this for a long, long time.

Inhert Apr 28, 2009 11:37 AM

I was really worried when they announced multiplayer for this game, I thought it would just be a gimmick a little like in RE5, but after seeing that video, wow I'm sold! It look really fun and intense! I love how height seem to play a big role!

Inhert Jun 9, 2009 03:26 AM

Thread bumping.

I'm curious to see if anyone else got into the beta?

It's been a week since I'm playing and I'm having a blast! All the goodness of the single player campaign but into multiplayer, make for a very intense experience.

I really love their take at the capture the flag mode, where you have that treasure that you can throw at other teammate. You can even use your pistol to defend yourself. It's pretty fun when you have a good team that manage to past perfectly the treasure all the way to our base :)

For now the two map are pretty solid and fun. I hope in the final release they will explore even more the height feature, by having more then just ground level and second level.

Aardark Jun 9, 2009 01:40 PM

I haven't played much, but I'm really glad they included co-op scenarios. Much more fun than the competitive modes to me.

I have a spare code if anyone wants it, by the way.

edit: code gone!

Rockgamer Jun 9, 2009 08:04 PM

I actually used the extra code Aard had, but then a few hours later Sony sent me a code, so I now have a spare up for grabs should anyone need it.

Anyway, I just got through playing a round of team deathmatch, and I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed. Granted, I've never really been a big fan of competitive shooters, and overall this didn't really do anything for me to change that. I'll probably play it and the other competitive mode a bit more, but I'm much more excited to try out the co-op.

If anyone else in the beta wants to get together for a game, I'd be down for that.

EDIT: Code has been given out.

Aardark Jun 11, 2009 03:42 AM

I got another beta code to give away.

edit: gone

Sjaakie Jun 14, 2009 12:52 PM

Never really heard about this game tbh but I only recently got a ps3, but it looks like a fun game maybe I will play the original first.

Rockgamer Jun 14, 2009 10:47 PM

Finally got around to playing the co-op mode, and even though it wasn't under optimal conditions (it was only a two player game, and the other dude didn't even have a headset), I still had a lot more fun with it than I did with team deathmatch. As long as it's played properly (i.e. with two other people with headsets), it may end up being as fun as if not more fun than the single player game.

Skexis Jun 14, 2009 10:50 PM

I have the Beta as well right now. PSN ID Skexx, if anyone wants to play co-op some time.

Shows how much I know, I thought it was multiplayer only.

Rockgamer Sep 13, 2009 08:51 PM

Has anybody pre-ordered the game yet? I honestly can't decide where to do so, but mostly because all the pre-order bonuses kinda suck (golden guns are meh, treasure map video will be on youtube/torrent sites within a day, and early access to the demo is pretty useless since it's still just a demo (i.e. none of the stats carry over to the main game)). In all likelihood I'll probably end up going with Amazon just because it's the cheapest option of the three, though that could change if Best Buy or TRU ends up having some kind of deal.

OmagnusPrime Sep 15, 2009 02:18 AM

Yeah, I've pre-ordered it, but then the options of place were slightly different over here in the UK. I went for the version that comes in a steelbook case, with the golden guns, extra MP skins and what-not. I pretty much went with that because there was a voucher that meant I could get it practically the same price as the normal version and because of the steelbook case.

Jin Sep 17, 2009 12:49 AM

I pre-ordered from bestbuy for the golden guns. The other stores have pretty good pre-order bonuses, but I went with bestbuy since I like their bonus the best.

Ryuu Sep 17, 2009 01:36 AM

I went with Amazon. None of the preorder bonuses are all that great, but after a couple of coupons, promotions, and such, preordering the game for $48.50 is something I'm not complaining about.

Shenlon Sep 17, 2009 07:46 AM

Haven't even played the first one. It was one of those games I put aside until I was ready to play it, and since I got my ps3 a considerable amount of time after the game came out I was hoping for a price drop but alas it didn't happen until recently here in the US.
Since I'm intrigued with uncharted 2 I guess now is a good a time as any to get the game since I'm in no hurry about pre-orders and whatnot. Although, other than 3 characters from the previous game, it doesn't looks like I need to know much about part 1 in order to play part 2.

Ryuu Sep 29, 2009 04:30 PM

So... Uncharted 2 currently has a Metacritic score of a 98...

Good start, though I figured it'd be good after playing the first one.

Shenlon Oct 1, 2009 07:33 AM

I finished the first one and loved it. The scenes were very movie like but they weren't long at all that it distracted from the gameplay.
The ending was a bit too hollywood happy but a good game nonetheless.

Also downloaded the multiplayer demo, tried a deathmatch and found that a lot of people were using mics which I found annoying.
First game I joined it was already a filled room, turns out you have to vote between 2 stages for the next match and I was the tie breaker. I picked the first stage because obviously if it was my first time, I don't know the stages. Some idiot says, "What! The temple? Why'd you pick that? What a noob, doesn't even know the stages, only noobs pick the temple."
This genius went on jabbering it up through out the entire match not only that but it turned out you get matched with people around your level because my team was getting murdered and I was one of the top players and it was my first time playing.
I left Deathmatch alone after that trying to ignore annoyances.

Co-op on the other hand is very fun, I only played with one other player and I don't know if we can play a 4 player co-op in the demo but if it's possible it would be great fun.

Rockgamer Oct 1, 2009 09:12 AM

I haven't got around to the demo yet, but I know it does feature co-op (it's only three player though, even in the full game) since it's essentially just a bigger version of the beta released earlier.

And yeah, there are always gonna be douchebags in these types of games. Nothing you can really do but ignore them, but I definitely wouldn't let them stop me from playing a game.

Inhert Oct 1, 2009 01:15 PM

Shenlon, you can always push X in the lobby and do Mute All or choose which player to mute if that ever happen again.

I always mute all since I don't play with mike and I found it annoying to hear everyone coming from my TV speaker.

Dobby Oct 1, 2009 03:23 PM

I tried the demo, It looks magnificent. I'm still playing the first one so I shall ahve to wait until I finish that before moving onwards.

Do you folks know if it will be "forced" multiplayer/co-op when playing the game?

Sousuke Oct 1, 2009 04:22 PM

I actually just bought a PS3 yesterday, and was considering picking up Uncharted. I didn't, but now that I've played the demo for Among Thieves, I think I definitely will next time I'm out.

No, the story mode is still single player only. All the multiplayer stuff, including co-op, is separate from that.

Whew, thats somewhat of a relief. Though thinking back, Resident Evil 5 had the capabilities and it worked quite well too

Hantei Oct 1, 2009 06:54 PM

Will the coop objective missions be more than 15 minutes? Cause in the demo they abruptly ended it after defeating the big guy with the gattling gun, before even finding the treasure Drake mentioned at the start of it.

Also, how many waves is the Gold Rush (Co-op Arena) mode? The highest I've gotten is wave 7, but found myself getting stuck at 6 most of the time. Those gattling gun guys are really annoying, and keep respawning too.

And regarding mic users, in one game there was one person who had their speakers blasted up so high that the game's sound effects were getting fed back into the mic. Resulting in an annoying echo effect, the guy wasn't even using it talk either.

Shenlon Oct 2, 2009 09:13 AM

I tried doing Co-op arena but it doesn't give the option to create that type of game, just normal co-op.
I'd rather invite some friends because when I joined some random people they gave up almost right away for some reason, they kinda sucked but I thought we were doing well.
I have yet to play the co-op fully with three players so if any of you see me online send an invite or something or maybe we can just have a GFF deathmatch.

Dobby Oct 2, 2009 12:05 PM

Oooh, I'm down. whats your PSN name?

My biggest beef thus far is how teams are set up, its always been "highest levels" vs "lowest levels" which is somewhat of a killjoy as most of the games I've played ended up with the lower levels (myself included) getting crushed.

Ryuu Oct 2, 2009 09:55 PM

For those of you who enjoy the video reviews on Gametrailers, they just released their review of Uncharted 2.

And it's a long one - ten minutes.

For those of you who only care about scores, though:
Spoiler:
They gave it a 9.3/10

It should be there, I remember seeing it when I was doing a private party with my friend. Machinima mode (the video recording mode) is pretty neat to fool around in too, you can get a good idea of what the maps are like and where/what the weapons are like too.

I had got a pretty good game last night with randoms in Gold Rush on the Village map. We actually made it to the 10th level/wave, but couldn't beat it (got really crazy, armored shotgun guys, gattling gun guys, snipers, chokers). Probably one of the best coop games I had. Everyone stuck close to each and backed up the other when they were in trouble (eg. choked, or getting flanked).

Oh, and kinda off topic, but for any Canadians looking for a Dual Shock 3 controller, Toy'r'us is having a huge sale selling the DS3 for $30 (plus some other stuff, like ODST for $60)! Bring the flyer to a Best Buy or Future Shop and you'll save an additional $2.50 (they match it plus 10% the difference)! Great timing too, as my current DS3's R2 button is loose as hell from DMC4 (Nero's Red Queen revving destroyed it).

Single Elbow Oct 3, 2009 02:06 AM

My brother saw copies of this game in our local Futureshop but I was with friends earlier so no hard evidence. Am deeply skeptical unless proven otherwise.

And tried the demo. Liked it to bits but this won't be a first-day purchase. Probably a month or two later.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 9, 2009 09:37 PM

Just finished it. Big improvement on the first one, I enjoyed it for the most part (I didn't enjoy 1). It's still marred by the same issues and poor design choices as the first one (namely the floaty movement and reliance on arena shootouts with enemies coming in waves), so that was disappointing. Pretty much all the new characters are completely unlikeable and don't hold a candle to the returning cast.

And there is a terrible boss fight waiting for all adventurers at the end. Just a fair warning.

As for the rest, it certainly looks the part, the music (while occasionally kicking in an ominous tune when nothing bad is even close to happening) is cinematic and there are a number of action setpieces that border on brilliant. They just sweep you off, keep you playing and when the game is at its best, you don't care or notice any of the flaws.

So yeah, don't believe too much of the hype and set too high expectations. It's a riproaring action-adventure with production values, great cast and inspired sequences, but it's still an average shooter with glitches, poor AI and occasionally frustrating platforming and instant deaths, just like the rest of them.

Timberwolf8889 Oct 10, 2009 03:59 AM

Been messing around with the multiplayer demo this past week or so, having a ton of fun =) (except for my slow connection but oh welly). I'm sad they took out the seperate controls for look controls and aiming controls...I'm weird and like mine switched ;_;. Will definitely pick this up soon along with 2 or 3 other games I've been meaning to play. If anything though, Uncharted looks like a great time in that action game, quick kind of way and the multiplayer looks like something I might go back to so yeah, exciting!

Shenlon Oct 10, 2009 06:08 AM

I tried out the mulitplayer some more and every time I did someone always says something like "oh look at all the newbs", not joking.
Still fun but the matchmaking is a peace of crap. I don't know about anyone else but pairing levels 1-7 against levels 25-50 isn't fair.

Timberwolf8889 Oct 12, 2009 04:42 AM

I learned to mute the people in the multiplayer so fast, and then it made the game much better. That said, despite the horrible matchmaking (Level 1 and Level 42...eh?) I've been having a ton of fun with the multiplayer. The objective based modes are fun except that most games of chain reaction end within about 2 minutes and with how long it takes it find a game, that's a bit of a letdown. Is it simply first to capture all of the points on the map or what?

How many maps is the game shipping with out of curiosity?

Shenlon Oct 14, 2009 07:19 AM

I am enjoying the crap out of the single player, it's really hard to stop playing because I just want to see the next cinematic moment.
Haven't checked out how many maps there are in multiplayer since I want to run through single player first.

2nd chapter
Spoiler:

The stealth sequence in the game isn't as hard as reviewers made it out to seem, as long as you know the takedowns it'll be cake. I was able to do it on my second try on normal.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 14, 2009 07:26 AM

It's certainly not hard, it's just poor and annoying. It felt like I was back to playing Stolen. Luckily the game picks up quite a bit from there.

Shenlon Oct 14, 2009 07:48 AM

Well I can't say I found it annoying, maybe too easy because of the ignorant AI.
Something I forgot to mention is that the game is already getting screwy on my part, already found like 4 glitches up until chapter 5.

Spoiler:

Chapter 2, when there are 2 gaurds leaning on the wall flynn says "I'll take care of the other one". I go after the one on my side and flynn does nothing, I had to beat them both up.
Again in chapter 2, when flynn throws the rope, I go up and you're suppose to jump across the wooden columns but I immediately found a shortcut where you can just climb across if you use the edge of the windows but if you do this, Flynn won't follow.
In the Jungle, when I met up with an enemy, he rapidly started jitterring left to right like he was dodging bullets from the matrix.
In the end of chapter 7, the movie scene started up and the speech dialog disappeared, well it was more like it was muffled like someone covered my ears. I had to turn on the subtitles to know what they were talking about and I know it wasn't my speakers because the sounds effects were as clear as ever and the voices fixed themselves after the scene.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 14, 2009 08:00 AM

I mostly ran into clipping errors. Both NPCs and Nate.

Spoiler:
One guard was standing literally in the middle of a truck, with his head sticking out and unable to move in any direction.

Another guard was on a balcony, leaning behind a small wall for cover, and every time you shot him, it'd activate his "I'ma taking damage" animation, and he'd clip through the balcony straight down and then pop back up, as if in an elevator. I shot him enough till he fell right through the balcony and landed on the ground below, where he continued to hunch in cover position, looking at me over his shoulder even though there was no wall to hunch behind.

Nothing game breaking, but it does make some of those "This is one of the most polished games we've ever seen" statements in reviews pretty laughable.

Gechmir Oct 14, 2009 10:39 AM

Stealth in this game is atrocious, but whatever. I just hope it doesn't take the driver's seat for most of a chapter. Trying to get used to the new key for grenades (I played Uncharted 1 JUST BEFORE this came out). I welcomed an easier way to use them, but I keep hitting UP on the D-PAD to reload :V But the attention to detail in this game is incredible. Just started Chapter 5 the other day.

Stuff about 5 thus far:
Just came across guys with shields. That part took a quick hike up in difficulty, I mean really. Mis-threw a grenade, the WHOLE PACK came over to investigate, and I took out nine guys with one grenade. It was incredible :3: Then the next wave came. The guys with shields really befuddled me. Someone threw a grenade behind my cover, and I got screwed after running out from cover. Is there a way to throw back grenades in this one?

Shenlon Oct 14, 2009 10:49 AM

Well from what I see, after chapter 2 stealth is pretty obsolete but it was still a good way to get some easy trophies. Trying to get 1 hit punches ten times in a row for the trophy but it's impossible where I'm at because there are always enemies I can't reach because of lack of bridge or something and I need to start it over. Although, I did find out that you can take care of enemies mega quick by shooting by the hip once and punching them. I cleared out whole areas this way, in normal mode he doesn't take so much damage but I'm probably used to it more because I just finished crushing mode on Uncharted 1 the day before I got this game.
I don't think you can throw grenades back, should have been in the tutorial if it was possible.

I'm not sure what chapter it was with the helicopter, maybe 5 or 6.
Spoiler:
The helicopter taking down the entire building was amazing, my blood was pumping after that.
