Features To Add?

What features are currently missing from GFF that you would like to see?

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 2, 2006 10:05 AM

Ever since we switched to vB3, I've been asking you to bring back the total number of posts in a thread in the corner of posts.

http://myy.helia.fi/~a0400729/Pics/Please.jpg

Last time you were in chat, you said you'd do it too, so can we please have it back? Even the temp forums have it.

[03:02:55] <Q-chan> If forums are to be redesigned, can we PLEASE have a total number of posts in a thread digit next to the post number? ( "out of 45" for instance)
...
[03:03:12] <Mercarios> Q-chan; sure
[03:03:20] <Q-chan> I'll hold you to that
[03:03:27] <Q-chan> that was the only thing I missed from the switch to v3
[03:03:29] <b33rf0x> Q, 3.5 gives you a lot of other cool stuff
[03:03:32] <Q-chan> otherwise everythign was better

Outlaw Mar 2, 2006 03:49 PM

The arcade, most deffenatly. Some of the older smilies too would be great...

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 2, 2006 03:50 PM

I'd like to see the user rating system back. That was a pretty cool feature.

I'm also wondering what this "Junior Member" business is about.

Grawl Mar 2, 2006 03:51 PM

Files are now limited to their resolutions too (lol only image files nub). Is this implented to save bandwidth and space, or just the default settings that didn't get set yet?

Dopefish Mar 2, 2006 03:58 PM

Agree on the first point.

"Junior Member" is a default user title. Some people haven't been arsed to change them yet, clearly.

The color of the posting box needs to be changed to solve light-text-on-light-box effect. Also, I can't delete my posts anymore; please give that feature back.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 2, 2006 04:00 PM

I don't think we ever had that feature on here.

Dopefish Mar 2, 2006 04:01 PM

Oh really? I seem to recall it. Anyway.

The "Level" function is obviously not working. Gotta fix that. :)

Sir VG Mar 2, 2006 04:06 PM

Calendar needs to be fixed. It goes from 2000-2006, but it should go into the future, not the past.

Users cannot delete their posts, and it has been this way for as long as I can remember. The reason is to make sure users can't cover their tracks when they post something they're not supposed to. Even if they edit their post and remove the content, at least the post entry will remain for evidence.

Somebody actually uses the calendar?

Sir VG Mar 2, 2006 04:21 PM

Well, if it's gonna exist...

VermillionFF7 Mar 2, 2006 04:23 PM

Not being able to change your birthday without Administrator consent. :(

Peter Mar 2, 2006 04:32 PM

I'd like an option taht shows the post statistics for a specific forum, like who has the most posts in the Sewers, Animespot, CC,... .

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 2, 2006 04:35 PM

I'd like to see the rating system out of GFF, frankly. It becomes a petty little thing people do, and it's hardly authentic. And before you accuse me of having a poor rating on the OLD GFF, I welcome you to check out the archives when they come back up. I had an average of 4.2, I think.

The journals I would naturally want to see come back. But I like the added Wiki button. I don't think that was there before. Or was it?

ANd Dope, we never could delete our own posts. Only edit them.

O YEA. THE REPORT BUTTON. I miss it already.

Also, BLINK. ^_^ unless i did that wrong? its always worked for me in the past

It was there before, just under Quick Links.

It's there. I know you're hyper from GFF coming back and all, but...

TRZD Mar 2, 2006 04:49 PM

Yeah I don't think ratings are so necessary either. Apart from the bi-annual "do you check/care about your ratings" thread in CC I don't feel that they're as widely used or cared about as in the past. I think everyone is capable enough of making up their own opinions on people, and if someone isn't liked around here I think it's obvious enough to them without having to look at the missing boxes next to their flag.

I'd like to see ChocoPie back, hopefully you didn't lose the code again. :(

edit: any chance of having the whole Who's Online list on one page instead of a default of just 25 per page?

Son of Wiseness Mar 2, 2006 04:53 PM

Levels and Chocojournals.

Dopefish Mar 2, 2006 04:53 PM

That's a lot of wasted space just for a flag, though.

The male/female icon next to the username is missing.

ChocoPie was clever, but I don't know how necessary it is.

Musharraf Mar 2, 2006 04:53 PM

I won't give up asking for Chocopets!

Niekon Mar 2, 2006 05:01 PM

I hate to say this but I'm going to have to agree somewhat with Dopefish on the ChocoPie thing. As one who used to run an FTP server it was nice to see a posting history divided into the different sections of folks who were requesting the password to access my server. That way I could make that determination whether or not I wanted to give it out or not...

And as other have said... the little gender icon and the level indicator...

Snowknight Mar 2, 2006 05:39 PM

At this very moment, I'd like to have the quick reply feature back in PMs.

Freelance Mar 2, 2006 05:42 PM

I really want to see CHOCOPIE back. I LOVE CHOCOPIE!!!!

Although ratings aren't necessary, I still like having it back. I'm not one of those popular members, so it's nice to know, through the ratings, if people here actually like me or not XD

Seconded on both counts. Especially CHOCOPIE. I'm a slut for stats and fancy graphs.

Dopefish Mar 2, 2006 05:45 PM

My Journal ChocoPie looked so much like Pac-Man I was hoping that, if it was brought back, the slice that wasn't mine would just be a circle.

seanne Mar 2, 2006 05:46 PM

It would be nice to have the Chocobo themed default usertitles back, if possible. And the reply message windows just don't look right the way they are now.

Elixir Mar 2, 2006 06:18 PM

I'm really not sure if this is possible, or has been done before, but I'll give it a shot.

I'd like a "forum favorites" section. An option where you can add your favorite forums to your list, and block others. Face it, some people just don't post in Community Commons. Others don't post in the Music forum, so there's no point in focusing on them while you're enjoying your stay at gff.

It's just an idea, but I would find it quite useful. Like a subscription to your selected forums, or a list which you can pay more attention to over other subforums which aren't tendering to.

I would appreciate that as well. It would be very convenient to be able to block threads from certain forums from showing up when using the 'New Posts' button.

TRZD Mar 2, 2006 06:46 PM

You can subscribe to forums by clicking the "forum tools" dropdown at the top of the thread listings within a forum and clicking the obvious option. Then the forum(s) you subscribe to will appear listed in your User CP.

Dunno about blocking out forums you don't want to post in though; but then if you go with using your subscribed list that pretty much gets rid of them anyway, doesn't it? :p

edit: oh yeah, the new post search, didn't consider that. Guess it would be useful to block out specific forums in that then...

Elixir Mar 2, 2006 06:55 PM

I noticed that in the Member List there's no ability to search for a member.

Having that back would be a real plus.

Franky Mikey Mar 2, 2006 07:13 PM

i'd like the gamingforce sharing system back....that was nice...

It's in the same spot it was before, right under the spot where you can choose which page you want to be on there's a thing that says "Search Members." There's also an advanced search option that you can select as well.

I want quick delete back. ;_;

TRZD Mar 2, 2006 07:50 PM

Also, how about "who quoted me"? It's good to know when you're being talked to/about/noticed in general. :p

galen Mar 2, 2006 07:51 PM

Light Set.

I once again request a light set be created.

EDIT: I probably should have put this in the feature thread so I think someone should merge it into that. Okay!

I could of sworn there was a Search Members on the Members List page without being a dropdown menu.

Zergrinch Mar 2, 2006 08:25 PM

What happened to the Quick Quote button that allows you to quote the message in the quick reply box? :p

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Mar 2, 2006 08:39 PM

MARQUEES of course.

Also, chocopie.

Also, while you're here fixing things, any chance of making it possible to see a list of how many posts each person has in any forum, like you can with a thread by clicking on the number of replys on the forum screen.

That makes little sense but I know what I mean. It was a feature of the original vb2 boards way back in the day but you took it off for some reason.

Advanced Search, search for member name "Jazzflight" and list by thread. It's how I've been doing it ever since I came here.

Bigblah Mar 3, 2006 12:30 AM

That's kind of unavoidable, considering that Quick Reply doesn't reload the whole page now.

Unless I do some Javascript DOM hacking or something, but that's a bit unnecessary.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 3, 2006 12:35 AM

Why would the restriction on sigs be gone?

Schadenfreude Mar 3, 2006 01:49 AM

I don't know if this belongs here or not, but whenever I go to the main index page of GFF it nearly always hangs my browser (Firefox) for at least 1-2 seconds. Problem on my end?

Bigblah Mar 3, 2006 02:17 AM

It might be due to the gigantic list of names under "Total members that have visited the forum today". I've turned it off for the moment, does it improve performance?

It was :XBOX: and extended the main forum page by at least half.

I don't see why anybody would want to know if a person has been online today. Isn't that what their profile tells you? "Blah was last online September 23rd, 2001 @ 5:32 PM" helps the people who are wondering when Blah user was last online, but a endless chain of users probably doesn't get used.

Peter Mar 3, 2006 05:29 AM

Being able to see the start of a post after doing a search is really nice, since it allowes you to quickly see if it's relevant to your search or not.

I'd also like to see the return of "who quoted me?"

Son of Wiseness Mar 3, 2006 06:30 AM

Fixed that for you. Being a foreign would definatly (<--- See?) benefit from ChocoSpell, but I would much more like the forum being back in almost the way it was before the Great Crash©.
And as far as I can see, you can download some kind of spelling thing by clicking the http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/im...r/spelling.gif-picture in the reply box.

As for Chocohost, why not just use www.photobucket.com ?

As for me, the only thing I really crave is the Chocojournal back, but as this is high on bobo's To-do-list, I really just am seeing what's happening.

The chocobo icon is actually being used at Serious Business right now, even though I provided a candidate replacement. One of the admins should take it from there and pop it into the forums directory.

This feature is available in your profile, under 'Forum Info'. I would rather not have it back together with the 'New Posts' button where it also was before.

Dark Chocolate Mar 4, 2006 08:33 PM

Chocojournals... Who am I a buddy of... ChocoDecide ( I know I wasn't the only one using that!). Arcade definately. When you post in a thread, it's subscribed automatically. I haven't noticed if Who Quoted Me is there but if not, bring it back. And the tracking for PMs.

I just really want the journals. Sometimes they were more interesting than the boards.

Oh and Chocopets. You promised!!!

Get to work BOBO!

UltimaIchijouji Mar 4, 2006 08:54 PM

I love visual effects and the GFF blue default is starting to get old. Maybe even an alternative to switch to so everyone can be happy. It's a new GFF so maybe we should make it look new too.

It can be a community event thing and have people design themes. It'll be nice.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Megalith Mar 4, 2006 09:38 PM

Blue is what makes the forum unique, idiot.

Would it be possible to show the number of users browsing a forum under the subscribed forum list in your User CP. It only does so for the main index page.

I'll reiterate one that hasn't been fixed yet that is quite important:

ALSO, GIF avatars allowed, PLZ.

And if you DO reintroduce Chocohost, please have it use a numbered system like the avatars, so that way you don't have to refresh your cache to see a new signature.

galen Mar 5, 2006 01:33 AM

Soooo.....light set?

Outlaw Mar 5, 2006 02:17 AM

I don't remember if we had it before, but maybe an "I'm online now" indicator in posts, probaly paralell to the flags. I know it's kind of useless, but....it's an idea....the space just looks blank without the user rating pips there, if you don't plan on bringing user raitings back it would make the space look less empty, and even if you do, it would still work if you make the indicator small enugh.....

Another thing I haven't seen mentioned here (or maybe I missed it) was that the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the "Quick Reply" box would automatically make a makeshift preview within the text input window along with the WYSIWYG preview at the top.

Is there any way of bring that back? I can't count the times I've already fucked up posts just because I get lost in long lines of open and end vB tags. ;__;

There also used to be a search history or last 10 searches things.

Anyway, gimme my "Philippines" flag please. The graphics file exists: http://gamingforce.com/forums/images...hilippines.gif. Currently it's looking for a "Philippine.gif" instead of "Philippines.gif".

It may have something to do with the fact that "Philippine" is listed under the home country profile options instead of "Philippines."

Megalith Mar 5, 2006 09:48 PM

Can someone tell me why the avatar limit is 20k instead of 30.

Free.User Mar 5, 2006 10:58 PM

I agree. Many people will argue that:

Code:

Dialup=56Kb/s or ~7KB/s.
Forum default is 25 posts/page. 25 avitars at 20kb = 500kb.
Total avitars(500k) divided by 7KB/s = 71seconds. (500/7=~71 seconds).

A full page of avitars will take a dialup user 71 seconds to load. While that is a long time, not every user has an avitar, not every avitar is 20kb, and users have the ability to disable avitars. I say up the size to 30kb aswell.

Megalith Mar 5, 2006 11:00 PM

Seeing as how the avatar size was 30k before the crash, an argument is not necessary.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 6, 2006 01:52 PM

I don't know if this feature is back and I am looking the wrong place, here, but is the Who Quoted Me? feature back? I use it a lot and I have yet to find it. =/

Peter Mar 6, 2006 01:54 PM

It's not back yet, and it has been addressed before. Seems like bobo's too busy with putting up the backup.

Another feature I liked is the date a thread was made besides the name of the member who made it, if it's possible to implement that again.

Dr. Uzuki Mar 6, 2006 03:33 PM

I am in favor of seeing the user rating gone for good as well. Any word of confirmation on this?

It's just a more pleasant way to view the forums for me. I don't need to know what everyone's level, member number, join date, gender, nation, and rating is.

Oh and BTW: If you don't pick a flag, it defaults to the United States. I'd like to see that fixed, to where if I don't pick a flag, it displays no flag.

It'd be nice to see user ratings back. It was voluntary to take part anyway, so what's the argument?

It's that some people want legitimate ratings, and the system--as it was--allowed too much, "I rated you a one for lol and then more lol." At least, that's what I see the argument to be.

Drex Mar 7, 2006 12:23 AM

For the record, you might want to limit the number of characters in a custom title. I was double checking to see if HTML really was disabled in the titles, and it ended up with a nicely messed up table.

Arkhangelsk Mar 7, 2006 03:00 AM

The "Who Quoted Me?" feature was very nice, but I really miss being able to view the Buddy list, as to who's on mine and who's I'm on, and whether they're mutual or not. That was really convenient. Not sure if somebody already mentioned it, but I thought I'd second it if it has.

How about an option to show all your posts that have new replies (Only red folders in "my posts")?

I don't know how feasible that is, mainly because of ambiguity in what is truly a reply to your post. That is, a post may succeed yours, but it may not be a reply to your post; it may be intended as a reply to another post.
The only good way that I can immediately think of to do this is to say that replies quote the original post (or part of it), which is, more or less, the "Who Quoted Me" feature. (With the exception that your request would require each quoted portion to have some sort of identifier to make it possible to identify a quote with a certain post.)

But I don't see arguments for a better system, just for the abandoning of the old one. It just seems like the mindset of these people is to get rid of it because they have ideas about how it might be getting misused, and so let's forget about everyone who gets something positive out of it.

So who are these people that are judging everyone based on some boxes under someones posts anyway, and why are their malformed opinions and practices carrying more weight than those people who just get a bit of throwaway fun from the system? Those other ones? The judging ones? Fuck 'em. The rating system is for us, not them.

You misunderstood me, or I wasn't clear. The replies don't have to be directly to you or contain a quoted portion of your post, rather any unread post after yours. If I search for posts by user, (Free.User), I get all the threads I posted in. This would filter out any threads where your post is the last post, (or threads that you have read but your post isn't the last post), and only show threads that have unread posts after your post (In other words, only show the red folders).

galen Mar 8, 2006 09:48 PM

Thank you Bigblah, here's what I think needs to be done still:

- Some kind of partition between the avatar/name space and the post

- Remove borders/background from avatar space (now that I think of it, if you could just do a 1px border instead of the border, inner border and bg, that would be great.

- The old lite set had the forum descriptions and (# viewing) removed as well, and I liked that. (less clutter)

- Thread ratings were all removed as well.

I think that's about it. If more comes up I'll post it here.

If it's not too much trouble..

galen Mar 10, 2006 12:59 AM

Looking good now. just a few more things:

- Remove space between posts if possible
- Alternating post colors?
- The line below the date and time of post should be lightened, it's nearly invisible right now.

Do you guys remember we used to have a section at the bottom of the home page with the "Daily Age Limit for Sir VG's Women"?

Can we bring that back, please?

There was a small subtle feature that I kind of missed.
Basically, when you selected "Last page" on a thread link with multiple pages, it took you not only to the last page, but also the last post as well.
Do you think this can be incorporated again. It was very handy for me.

Sir VG Mar 15, 2006 11:19 PM

There's one thing I just noticed that needs to come back: Thread Creation listing on the forum page.

So if you were visiting Board Support, this thread would say:

Features To Add?
bobo (Started on March 1st, 2006)

(Or something like that)

Jan Mar 16, 2006 06:58 PM

When you click the number of posts in a thread to see the "Who Posted?" screen, before you could click on the number beside everyones name and see just their posts listed but not anymore. Can this be brought back somehow?

Gakineko Mar 16, 2006 11:18 PM

I'd like to continue the motion of the "my posts" link. being able to see where i had posted helps me look for where to reply. if i have to wait for a couple of pages in-between, it deters me from even bothering. (;>_>)

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 19, 2006 09:44 PM

Could we add the View Journal in the dropdown menu above the avatar of someone's post?

nazpyro Mar 20, 2006 02:18 PM

How about a nice, albeit useless, but interesting "avatar mural." The page could just generate, say, a 10-by-20 "wall" of people's avatars. It could be generated by various options: top posters, random from anyone with avatars, whatever else may come to mind. Meh, just something that came to mind while looking at albums murals over at last.fm.

Lee-chan Mar 20, 2006 10:24 PM

- I'd love to see the "Who Quoted Me" feature back.

- The "ChocoPie" was really nifty, I think

- I'd actually like to see the rating system back.

Lord Styphon Mar 20, 2006 11:51 PM

I'll throw in the Members Gallery for readdition, if only as a tool for us to do something about the growing number of users who aren't using the Profile Picture to display things other than pictures of themselves.

Amanda Mar 21, 2006 12:50 AM

Gender icons, please. That little grey box next to the usernames is kinda pointless without them.

Also, add me to the list of people who want the rating system back. Or a rating system, at least. It doesn't necessarily have to be the same one. Other systems exist on other message boards, like the dotting system on @forumz. I don't post there, but I know of their dot system, and it seems pretty decent. More interactive than the one-time rating system the old GFF had, at least. Instead of rating people once anonymously, you can give them a green dot whenever they say or do something in a post that impresses you, or a red dot whenever they say or do something that makes you think they're a raging fuckwit. They get a PM saying what post they were rated for, and a little message from the person who rated them (if they choose to send one). The accumulation of dots over time = their user rating.

I'm not necessarily advocating we use that system, but it's just some food for thought. If the old rating system is gone for a specific reason, there ARE other rating systems out there.

You can select your gender preference in the User CP under Edit Options: Undisclosed/Male/Female. Can't think of others...

EDIT: Nm, I just realized they're not appearing... they were before when the board reopened.

Amanda Mar 21, 2006 01:21 AM

The gender icons seem to have been appearing on and off, then disappearing again just as quickly. I've seen then randomly appear from time to time. And whenever I make a quick reply post, I can see my OWN gender icon (but no one else's). Though as soon as the page is refreshed, it disappears again. Seems like the gender icons are kicking around in the system SOMEWHERE. They're just not showing up most of the time.

Actually....they still apear in your profile where they should be.....even when you refresh the page, they're still listed. So....the icons themselves are still on the server. I also just got a PM, and the icons show up there, even when you refresh the page as well. It's almost like....they're hiding out in PMs and Profiles but are nowhere to be seen on the main forums other then for a fleating time span for some reason....

Also I would like to add...could change the new message, sent message, Read Message, Forwarded Message and Replied-to Message icons aswell as the reply and forward buttons in the PM box to match the rest of the forum? They look a little strange....for the simple reason the default ones don't mach the forum....with their white borders and all....

eriol33 Mar 21, 2006 07:41 PM

btw, I suggest to add the star rating system like in the old GFF. They could be used to show whether a member is liked or rather hated by community.

Elixir Mar 22, 2006 10:11 AM

I usually just leave my custom title blank, but now I've noticed that any japanese text entered in there ends up ending with &#. Can someone do something about this because it's really annoying.

RacinReaver Mar 22, 2006 12:24 PM

Yeah, I'll second the request for not allowing Japanese characters to be used in custom titles.

Elixir Mar 22, 2006 12:35 PM

There's also a few characters in character map which removes lines, reverses text, and so on. There's like 5 of them, and I'm not even joking.

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2...titled2yu1.png

I'd love to stay as this, and be a unique individual(lol) as I discovered it(lol) if it doesn't get fixed or cannot be fixed. Either way I'll leave it up to bobo, and I'll leave it in my custom title like this for a few days so people can see what I'm talking about.

I request a small radio button or check box at the bottom of the Create New Thread box, say, underneath "Disable smilies in text" that says "Ban Elixir from this thread".

And then when it's switched on, if Lix ever tries to view the thread, he gets a denied message and gets forwarded to yahoo.com or some porn site.

I would also find this feature suggested by Colonel F.T. Skills very useful. Nothing is worse than having your thread invaded by someone making irrational "points" and subsequently whining that he's "not allowed to have a differing opinion".

RacinReaver Mar 22, 2006 03:49 PM

Not really sure what language packs I'd be missing since I haven't had any webpages pop up that are all boxes (for example, Oolong's owner's webpage displays fine on this computer).

PS, I didn't know a P4 with 2GB of RAM running WinXP Pro with SP2 was an old slow computer. :(

Elixir Mar 22, 2006 03:54 PM

2GB of RAM what the hell.

Oh well. I'm not sure then, but as I am seeing a difference when I change custom titles, it probably isn't client side(firefox) and on my older computer it's the exact same thing as what you're getting.

If you have SP2 installed then I really have no freaking clue. That's the only essential thing my old computer that is missing right now.

Both of those smilies are awesome, and should be added. Since we have an endless supply of smilies which are never used(such as :aargh:,, :naughty:, :shh:, :superhappy:, and others(which are pretty stupid, really.)) I think adding some which we would use would be a great idea.

I reckon most people were tired of having that box pop up, I know I was. Do you really need to know if someone has read your PM or not? The thing seems pretty useless to me.

Bigblah Mar 25, 2006 09:59 PM

I prefer not having the message box pop up, that's pretty annoying. If I were intent on tracking the message I'd make sure to check the option beforehand.

I agree. No pop up box = good. Who cares about tracking messages.

Duminas Mar 25, 2006 11:18 PM

As far as the Lite Set goes (nice job on it, BB), I've got a couple things I want to bring up about it.

An annoyance I'm running into is that in the old Lite Set, if the poster had an avatar, it'd function as a direct link into the user's profile--as we lack a Profile button to get there directly under this set (unless I'm missing something glaringly obvious), having this functionality back would be nice. It did not work for avatar-less folks, but I don't think that's too big a deal. And I'm well aware of the dropdown menu, but this was quite convenient.

Another variation is that in the old Lite Set, the header still had GFF's banner (where it is removed here). As it's light, the new change makes sense and is something I like, though I just thought I'd bring it up.

Yet another variation would be that there was a pipe bar (|) seperating the Edit, Quote, and Report links. That, and they were originally positioned at the bottom-right of a postbit, but the new positioning seems more intuitive.

Did you do anything to your sig to make the link span the entire space where your image shows up, Jan? I've accidentally hit it a couple times. ;_;

Bigblah Mar 25, 2006 11:27 PM

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm a bit behind on the implementation of the Lite Set (still need to code in galen's proposed changes).

The link spanning the entire postbit is just a matter of vbcode sequence -- if the [url] code is outside the [right] positioning code, the entire space gets linked.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 26, 2006 12:09 AM

I think that little trick Jan uses should be outlawed. It's just annoying as hell when you try to click the page to scroll down and end up getting linked to his journal.

Elixir Mar 26, 2006 12:15 AM

Is there an option in Firefox which allows wheel clicks to scroll, but not to click?

I haven't come across the option so far, but I'm using a pretty outdated version of firefox. It would also be nice if people with hugeass sigs didn't link to, like, livejournal or some place which nobody bothers with for good reason.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 26, 2006 12:43 AM

I have a laptop and I use the arrows to scroll. Thus the need to click on the page first.

I'm not trying to trick anyone! I didn't even know it was like that, but now I see what you mean. Is there a way to have the sig image with a link and to the right without it being a link across to whole page??

Bigblah Mar 26, 2006 04:53 AM

One thing I noticed is that adding a title for a link is different then before the crash. Any reason for this? Not that I'm really complaing about it. I guess there's no difference. >__>

Bigblah Mar 26, 2006 05:06 AM

There's no change in the vBcode. It's still [url]{param}[ /url] and [url={option}]{param}[ /url].

Jan Mar 26, 2006 05:10 AM

Yeah but... I mean actually putting the title in. It's like before there would be two boxes poping up for us to insert our info but now you insert the url into the box and then there is no second box instead the area to type in is highlighted. So you just it in that way. : /

Bigblah Mar 26, 2006 05:15 AM

I suppose the vB development team changed it to ensure behavioural consistency across the vBcode buttons.

Scarletdeath Mar 26, 2006 05:54 AM

Requesting the "Local time indicator" to return. It's useful to know other's local time since we have users from all over the world. Can this be done?

As in the indicator in the profile of the user back in the old GFF.

NovaX Mar 26, 2006 09:33 AM

I don't know if this has been said, but I'd like for there to be someway to link to the journals from the users profile or from the drop down menu when clicking on their name in the forum. Like there used to be.

Elixir Mar 26, 2006 01:47 PM

I'd like to see that the world map didn't expand when you place your cursor on it. I can't see the right side of the map once this happens, and I'm on 1024x.

Plus, it's worse that it's clickable so you can't scroll to the right when it's enlarged.

I'm pretty sure it is, but why would you want to do that?

I certainly wouldn't want people to be able to remove the line. I hate it when forums have it all seamless.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 26, 2006 08:33 PM

Just put your little pic there that makes it look seamless Megalith. Everything looks cluttered without the seperation, in my opinion.

Inhert Mar 28, 2006 03:57 AM

I don't know if it's just me, but before the crash, when there was a new post in a forum, I would click on the thread title in the "Last Post" colum and it would take me automaticaly at the of this thread... but now it always take me t at the first post(on the first page) of the thread.

is it normal? because I would really like that have that feature back ^^

Lord Styphon Mar 28, 2006 09:32 AM

It's not just you, and we know how it started.

Timberwolf Mar 28, 2006 10:41 AM

This might be some sort of a bug, but it seems that the "Go to first new post" button next to a thread takes me to posts from March 5th onwards within that thread.

gren Mar 28, 2006 03:33 PM

A long long time ago I used to be a big (not OO big) poster here. Now I edit Wikipedia. I've been noticing with threads like "favorite car", etc. type that it would be really useful if you could do "my favorite car ever is the [[Chaika]]." and it would output in the format "my favorite car ever is the Chaika." I am not sure if it'd take too much board hax to convert format when posting but I think it'd be useful for quick referencing things in a comprehensive web resource. It doesn't have to be wikipedia (it just seems to be the most broad). You could have it link IMDb or you could allow for prefixes like [[imdb:Tampopo]] could search imdb for tampopo, since finding the ID would defeat the purpose. I don't know how easy/hard it would be... but, it seems useful to me. Then again I don't come here so often anymore so :)

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 28, 2006 05:37 PM

That actually sounds like a fucking AWESOME idea. However, this is bound to be overused and used for advertising so...

Bigblah Mar 28, 2006 06:51 PM

It's similar to the suggestion for the [google] tag, which I implemented. It was removed the same day due to the HTML exploit.

In short, any vBcode that involves putting a user defined string within tag parameters is a security risk. Therefore, none of the above ideas can be implemented until the vB developers make their vBcode parsing more robust.

Overkill Mar 29, 2006 02:38 PM

Hm. Could you make the site use relative links where possible instead of absolute ones? I can't directly access gamingforce.com from school because it's banned under "game-playing" content. But GFF's IP address and fire.xelium.net aren't banned. The only issue is that they link back to gamingforce.com/whatever. If you could fix that, it'd be much appreciated, because I'd love to visit GFF from my school.

Bigblah Mar 29, 2006 07:40 PM

It used to be relative until bobo put in the new URL system, I'll bring this up in the other thread.

gren Apr 1, 2006 03:10 AM

Capo, yeah... I can see it being overused and I suppose I can't think of a way to fix that.

Bigblah... could it be done without paramters to the tag... such as:

foo = <i>foo</i>
[W]foo[/W] = <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/foo>foo</a>

I am not sure how adding foo twice would work... but... would that allow for a vulnerability? Or,can you not define new tags. Curious.

eriol33 Apr 2, 2006 04:43 AM

Question... why everyone in GFF now has the "administrator label"? Is there error in the system?

EDIT: Damn... april fool... allright you got me...

What I meant was HTML tag parameters, not vBcode tag parameters. In your example, the code substitution would involve <a href=.....{param}>, and thus, having a user defined string inserted into the <a> parameter. That is the security risk which has been, and can still be, exploited.

Still waiting on this.

I'll repeat what Capo said in the Chocojournal thread and say Chocopie is something else that would be very nice to have back.

gren Apr 4, 2006 08:50 PM

So, want to give everyone e-mail at gamingforce.com?

https://www.google.com/hosted/ -- I just found that interesting.... I don't know if they support doing it for so many names but it's a pretty cool thing. Not sure how it works but, thought I'd mention it (if no one else has)

Ah, Bigblah... I wasn't even thinking... you can obviously do a fair amount given that power... since, you could close the tag and start up a new one or whatnot. It seems like the sort of problem that someone somewhere should be able to fix. Like... whatever method is used to make sure my <a href=site>site</a> doesn't work here... coudln't that do the same within the VB code? so that only plain non-tag-ified text worked? I am probably once again overlooking something, though :)

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Apr 4, 2006 09:35 PM

That sounds rather useful guys. We should definitely implement that somehow.

Little Shithead Apr 9, 2006 01:00 AM

I thought of something.

How about seeing if we could add a "quick quote" option.

Instead of going to the post reply page when you hit the quote button, it puts the quoted text in the quick reply box.

I don't really like having to load the post reply page to quote something.

Or is this something already suggested.

Certainly a feasable option. Invision Power Board I know supports the feature. It's a matter of whether a version that works with vBulletin can be made or exists.

Little Shithead Apr 9, 2006 10:36 AM

Oh, I know it's something that's feasable. I use SimpleMachines Forum (which is not nearly as fancy as vBulletin or IPB,) and it has it.

Edit:
Messing around with a copy of vBulletin on my computer (WAMP setup, yadda yadda,) the functionality is pretty much there, but it's limited (in that it doesn't quite do it the way I'd like it to.)

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Apr 9, 2006 11:11 AM

Well, this isn't exactly what you wanted, Merv, but there is already the option for quoting the last reply to a thread right here in the quick reply box. For some reason the box is there, but you aren't able to click it.

eriol33 Apr 9, 2006 11:18 AM

Umm, my suggestions:
-add smilies box to the quick reply button
-Printer friendly button feature, so we can view the thread in printer friendly format.

Well I always forget the smilies command, so...

Because it requires what I was messing around with in order to work.

How it works, is that the quick reply box is normally locked, until you hit a quick reply button that unlocks it. What the button does, is it sends in what post you're replying to, then you're able to check the box to quote it, however, it only adds the quote until you submit the post.

It's close to what I'm thinking of, and it would work, but not quite, ya know.

What I was looking for was pretty much that, except it puts in the quote text for you.

Bigblah Apr 9, 2006 12:57 PM

I think it can be done with Javascript, if I get around to testing it.

CloudNine Apr 14, 2006 01:58 AM

I don't know if it's been said, but we should get the who quoted me option back.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Apr 14, 2006 09:01 AM

Could someone put the superscript and subscript tags back in please?

[sup] and [sub] if memory serves.

Bigblah Apr 14, 2006 11:51 AM

We had those?

Anyway, just added them to the vBcode roster. Enjoy your H2SO4 and E = mc2

nazpyro Apr 15, 2006 11:17 AM

Don't know if it would be useful or not here (maybe in the My Stuff forum), but I've seen a feature around where portions of a post are hidden until users accomplish something, such as reply, say thanks, or obtain some given number of posts. A quick search came up with this: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=97366

Maybe? Maybe not? Up to you.

Just noticed that those little poll icons next to thread titles don't get ticked when you've voted. This shit needs to get sorted before Best Song Contest 06.

Free.User Apr 16, 2006 07:58 PM

I mentioned this way back in the beginning of March, and I've yet to see it implimented.

Please bring back the "My posts" shortcut!
Check out Serious Business... or better yet, have it as a sublink in a drop down menu when you click on "New Posts". That's how it was pre-crash, and I think a lot of people will agree with me that it was better that way. And please don't give me that "don't be a lazy assbandit" bullshit; It's absolutely no annoyance to the people who do not want it, so they shouldn't be complaining.

Can we also get some new arcade games please?

I have terrible memory, but I think I remember this: at one point, when you quoted someone in a thread, you could click on something in the quote and it'd take you back to the original post. I'd like to see that again.

UltimaIchijouji Apr 19, 2006 11:00 PM

We need Chocopie.

Also, for bobo to expand on ChocoJournal a bit might be nice, a bit more freedom?

The GFhome was very nice while it lasted also.

Only mods can delete posts. Sorry!

nazpyro Apr 30, 2006 01:40 PM

Just to add to the list of things I've said that won''t happen:

Perhaps dynamic image resizing... or at least in journals.

Also, I broke'd the journal. If you insert a broken "HTML comment", things break if you go back to edit the post; even though things look okay whe people read the entry and/or comment. For example,

Code:

<!--
stuff

blah

blah
--

Broke'd the intarweb.

Gender icons do show up in profiles though, if that helps.

I just tried accessing the site with IE and there's no gender icons either. Oh well, it's not like it's important. If I want to know someone's gender, and I rarely do, I can just check their profiles, which only takes me a mere three seconds to do.

BlueMikey May 6, 2006 11:50 AM

*shrug*

I don't know what to tell you then. If it was the way GFF was coded, it would be sustained and not erratic. I know that I've never had a problem. If you look at the top of this page of this thread, you'll see Agent Marty doesn't have one, but that's because gender icons weren't in place before he registered and he hasn't altered his User CP at all (which would change him to a ? if he didn't pick one). But that's about the only issue we're aware of.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I remember that when you used to click the number beside a thread in the 'Replies' column, the list that pops up used to let you be able to click the number beside a person's name and see all their posts in that thread. I couldn't agree more with this suggestion. I think I mentioned it a ways back, but I am reiterating my interest in seeing this feature to come back.

I can't express how annoying it is when you want to find someone's particular post in a GIGANTIC thread and have to go along at extremely slow speeds to find that reference point or whatever it is you're looking for.
