Mother 3 (I Can Die Happy Now)

Ladies and Gentleman, you all know without a shadow of a doubt that you love Earthbound. Even if you feebly attempt to proclaim the game is anything short of sublime, you can recognize, deep down, your folly. Alright, maybe that's pushing it a little. But hot damn was that a fine piece of video game ass!

Anyway, almost two years ago now, its sequel was released in Japan and all of us english speakin' folks found out that we had gotten the shaft hard. There was no localization announced, and there probably never shall be. Luckily, we have fantastic fans like THESE providing for our ignorant, non-Japanese speaking asses. So there you have it. Beautiful, translated Mother 3 by the end of the week. By the end of the week!

I hope everyone is as happy as I am at this news. This is one of my most anticipated video game experiences of all time.

Let the discussion begin!

It's gonna get cancelled because someone comments Chain of Memories is a better GBA game. Yeah that's right I called it.................................

Muzza Oct 14, 2008 03:21 AM

This does indeed look like the translation project to beat/end all translation projects. The attention to detail and accuracy sounds phenomenal! I still haven't completed Earthbound (...), but I'm about half-way through it right now and am absolutely loving it. I'll be sure to give this game a whirl after I finish!

There you go, I saved you the wait.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 14, 2008 04:09 AM

Actually, I take that back. I should have totally gone the incest rewrite joke route. "OH MOM I AM FUCKING" "OH MY SON YOU ARE FUCKING".

But really, it will be nice to finally have it in english, especially since Nintendo seems to have decided to never return to the franchise in english. I really liked the first two and bought Mother 3 even though I can't understand a word. The box is just so cool.

deadally Oct 14, 2008 06:09 AM

Finally! They've been working on this translation since...what, 2005?

Maybe Nintendo will notice and finally give us some love!

Definitely going to play this, though, for free. If Nintendo wanted MY money for it, they would have brought it over here, eh?

mortis Oct 14, 2008 06:49 AM

Ah, I am looking forward to this.

And hey, you beat miniface to the punch!

Philia Oct 14, 2008 06:55 AM

OMG. I knew Mother 3 never came out here, but I didn't realize its being deliberately translated of right now. How fucking awesome is that. I also didn't realize its a "sequel" to Mother 2. I figured its somewhat a port/remake of Earthbound for gba. O.O'

So... speaking OF... should I play Earthbound Zero before I play Earthbound or should I just go and play Earthbound before this?

K_ Takahashi Oct 14, 2008 07:08 AM

I was going to do a MOTHER 1+2 run before this came out, I guess I will just settle with this one I suppose.

It's not absolutely necessary, but I recommend it. Zero is a good game and it gives better perspective playing them in order. Zero also isn't that long of an RPG (though there is a lot of grindan at some parts).

orion_mk3 Oct 14, 2008 08:37 AM

I've been following the translation project with voracious interest for some time, so this patch is the culmination of a long, hard wait.

Does anyone care to post a clean checksum'd copy of the ROM what for patchin' purposes? The last fan translation I tried to install was derailed because I couldn't find a patchable ROM file.

Yeah. I can see why you would have missed that seeing as how 2 and 3 aren't consecutive numbers.

K_ Takahashi Oct 14, 2008 09:47 AM

Or could be pulling a Final Fantasy.

Philia Oct 14, 2008 10:46 AM

The translation site is calling it a sequel to Mother 2, but yet its an another Earthbound themed game. The series isn't sequential like any of those numbers (at least for 1 and 2), not that I'm complaining. Just wanted to make sure what the content is in Mother 3 really.

Sin Ansem Oct 14, 2008 10:48 AM

I've had a bit of vested interest in it, so perhaps I'll play. Sonic Chronicles is annoying the hell out of me and Castlevania comes out next week, so :/

BTW Qwarky, where do the cute chibis in your sig come from?

They're unrelated despite similarities. You could say Earthbound is an alternative retelling of Mother 1 because of similar characters yet taking place in a new world. However, storywise it's certainly a sequel. Either way, it's worth playing them in order. Plus Mother 1 has some completely awesome music.

It's a DS game called Kumatanchi, from doujin group Ashinaga Ojisan (same character designer as Habanero-tan), Dimple and Vanillaware. A friend of mine bought it for me on her trip to Tokyo, it's an extremely cute virtual pet style game. Tora-chan is awesum~

Certainly doesn't mean you can't play it...
I'm not sure why you're upset.

WolfDemon Oct 14, 2008 08:22 PM

Not necessarily upset. I just would rather play an officially translated version.

Sarag Oct 14, 2008 08:33 PM

Am I the only one who thinks ness should've made this thread?

damn, though. Released by week's end? Fuck yeah I know what I'm doing all weekend.

Jinn Oct 14, 2008 10:39 PM

Ha, I'm almost beginning to doubt whether I should have started this thread or not.

Didn't mean to steal it from you, ness! I was just so damn excited I had to share it with all the people I could. I offer you my life as recompense: my only request is that you slay me in a humane fashion.

Also, please wait until I beat Mother 3. Thank you!

Little Brenty Brent Brent Oct 14, 2008 11:15 PM

I've been waiting for this for a long time, and unfortunately I won't be able to start for a bit on account of being pretty busy with school. I figured I'd just let you guys know in advance, if things are spoiled, bitches gonna die.

Syndrome Oct 15, 2008 06:35 AM

I never thought they would finish this honestly, but now after what, 3 years? They're finished. It's awesome, I've waited so long. I might stay inside for a very long time when this shit hits the net :P

Actually, this is a fan-made translation. Nintendo currently has no plans for localization. The only 'pressure' was of the fans towards Nintendo to do the job,
and since they have not, the community has taken it into their own hands.

Also, if you need a ready-to-be-patched copy of the game, send a PM my way.*

YES !

Philia Oct 17, 2008 11:38 AM

Who's getting the handbook? That handbook is just awesome, SO preordering that. Its so weird, that we also have Earthbound's Players Guide which is a sight to behold in itself to this day. I can only imagine how much work they pour into it not to replicate EB's PC Guide format (clay models!) but to have Mother 3's own flavor. That's pretty neat. :D

Adol Oct 17, 2008 11:44 AM

Welp, I guess I know what I'll be doing for the next week or so. Also, by some weird coincidence, my shiny new CycloDS and EZV expansion showed up in the mail today after getting inexplicably stalled in the postal system for a few days. God, strange sense of humor, etc.

Kanji Oct 17, 2008 11:51 AM

So there is a god. Good to know. Wasn't going to start jumping for joy until I had the patch in my hands, and boy is it awe-inspiring to see a fan translation project deliver on a release date promise for once. Looks like it's gonna be well worth the wait.

Now I have to stop failing as a human and finish off my Earthbound playthrough.

Philia Oct 17, 2008 01:31 PM

You telling me wvlfpvp, I just started Earthbound! xD I'm trying NOT to rush this one so I would want to get into Mother 3.

I'm so glad I just started the mother marathon shortly before this, let me tell you, mother 1 only takes like a day to beat at least! :D

chato Oct 17, 2008 01:52 PM

This is just great. After Persona 2-1, Fully translations of ToP, now we have this. I too am in the same book as meia. I gotta finish Mother 1 first..

Syndrome Oct 17, 2008 03:01 PM

Now, should I play this on my PC or DS?
Can I use the .sav that Virtual Boy Advance creates, but with my M3 Real with Sakura?

wvlfpvp Oct 17, 2008 03:13 PM

According to the post that said that the patch was going to be released this week, it's more accurate to play it on your DS. Oh, and just start it on there. I don't think .sav's transfer.

Alright, thanks. The resolution and graphics and all sure did look way better on the DS Lite than on Visual Boy.

Altough I kinda wish I could play this on a GBA Micro

No. Hard Pass. Oct 17, 2008 04:30 PM

Well, I've pre-ordered the guide and downloaded the patch. Now waiting impatiently for the Mother 1 + 2 patch.

Buizel Oct 17, 2008 04:58 PM

Heh, I need to finish Earthbound/Mother 2 before playing this. Not only that I have to order an EZ 3-in-1 phat version too as I don't like using my brother's DSlite to play GBA games.

Anyway, it's great that the patch is finally out. :)

Little Brenty Brent Brent Oct 17, 2008 05:14 PM

Speaking of the guide, I wonder how many people are going to end up ordering one. It looks fantastic; just glancing through it it really looks like it's captured the feel of the original Earthbound guide.

Hmm, then that means I need to get an M3 or R4 or whatever new one is out now. How much do those usually go for?

You'll need a slot 2 device with that.
I started the game on my huegbox, but I've decided to wait for my EZ3in1 (for use with my CycloDS) and try finishing Okami in the mean time.

Just be sure to get one with GBA Compatibility. The R4 does not support GBA-games. When looking at M3, have a look at M3 Real. It does both NDS and GBA thanks to the extra GBA-cart that's included.

Not sure how much they fetch nowadays. Around $50-$60?

Muzza Oct 17, 2008 05:53 PM

Ahh, thanks for the info. I figured it'd be around $50. I was lucky to find one for sale on Amazon, just under $40 (A little over after S&H), so I'll be going with that, and of course scrapping through Brady's thread about it later.

By the way, what did they mean exactly by the 'secret project'? Earthbound on the GBA I'm guessing?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 17, 2008 11:10 PM

They were referring to a translation project of the Mother 1+2 cart, DN.

Is it that big of a difference between the gba versions to Nes and Snes Mothers? O.O'

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't GBA stunt the quality of music, at least for 1 + 2?

Sarag Oct 18, 2008 12:36 PM

I'm only about an hour into Mother 3 but I love it. I was kind of worried that I wouldn't like it as much as Earthbound, or that I would be unfairly comparing the two games. Mother 3 has charm in spades. It's so awesome.

The GBA version of Mother 1 fixes a few bugs from the original game making it a lot harder if I remember correctly.

I think the main reason they want to translate the cart besides deep-rooted obsession is that the translation for "Earthbound Zero" is from the official translated prototype cart and there was probably a lot of localization/simplication involved.

Really? Made by whom?
Honestly, could anyone be more sophisticated with a translation than the guys who brought us Mother 3? Jesus, all the work they've done. With the guide and everything.

Going back to the topic of the game in question, am I the only one finding it pretty challenging? I'm at the part when

Nearly 2 hours of playtime:

You get the Dinosaur Fang and need to get to Alec's cabin. I have only Flint in my party, and not only is there a bunch of enemies roaming the forests, but they dish out a good deal of damage too. Not to forget the snakes with their poison (and the lack of being able to carry more than like 2 items :tpg:).

I'm really enjoying it though. The translation feels very well made, and it's given me a couple of laughs already.

mortis Oct 18, 2008 04:41 PM

RPGOne "translated" the first game. By translated, they dumped the script for EB0 and put it in there. They also translated the menus of EB1/Mother 2.

Romhacking.net

Unfortunately, it seems that after the owner of the site passed away, updates have been infrequent. Understandable so.

I'd wait for Tomato and the rest to translate Mother 1 and 2...

wvlfpvp Oct 18, 2008 06:06 PM

So, for those of us without any flash thingies for a GBA/DS, what would any of y'all recommend?

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 18, 2008 09:17 PM

The three moments that sold me on Mother 3:

(spoiler from first five minutes):
Play-fighting with the Drago is SO ADORABLE ::falls over:: ::opens eye::

(minor detail from early in the first chapter that's not plotwise important at all):
The majorly tall guy who stands next to the bell tower and doesn't say anything. Why is he even there in the first place, OH RIGHT BECAUSE EARTHBOUND 2

Best part: he's so tall that when you try to talk to him he doesn't fit in the screen all at once, but sometimes if you try to talk to him and then immediately walk around him so you can see his top, a "..." bubble briefly appears over his head. It doesn't happen with all parties and it goes away really quickly so it's really easy to miss it.

(minor detail related to a plot point from like an hour/hour and a half into chapter one):
After you get covered in soot, you can go to the hot spring before heading back into town. Once you get out, the soot is cleaned from the part of you that was submerged, but your head is still covered.

I've heard a rumor that there's actual gameplay in there too that's pretty good, I'll investigate further and get back to you.

valiant Oct 18, 2008 09:49 PM

Yeaaahhhh! It has been too long. Hope it works on my wii. That way it feels more nostolgic to that of Earthbound. Ahh memories.

I don't understand, plz to be explaining. That guy is my second favorite NPC though, the first being Thomas cuz he runs like a cartoon character.

One thing I thought was major-league awesome, a lot of the people in town have sprites ripped suggested strongly from Earthbound townspeople. It's like OH HEY LOOK A CRANKY LADY I MISSED YOU~

That's why LOL EARTHBOUND 2.

orion_mk3 Oct 20, 2008 11:02 AM

On Chapter 7 and loving every minute so far. I really like how the game feels like it's taken some steps forward, rather than just being a rehash (the dash ability is terrific since movement was such a crawl in Earthbound).

Best of all, even though references to Earthbound were a little thin on the ground, early on (save for the general look and feel), the fanservice comes hot and heavy later on, with:

Late Ch. 6 spoiler
Spoiler:
A roomful of stuff from the prequel: a bike, a Decoy Teddy, a jukebox that plays classic themes, and Ness's yo-yo in a case guarded by a robomaid. Wonder who put it there...?
and
Early Ch. 7 spoiler
Spoiler:
Dr. Andronuts cameo! He's as misanthropic as always.
and best of all...
Mid Ch. 7 Spoiler
Spoiler:
SATURN VALLEY REDUX! The pigs complaining about the place being nonsensical followed by the farting presents...bliss

Incidentally, if anyone can't find a ROM or has patching difficulties...get it here.

FatsDomino Oct 20, 2008 01:37 PM

Holy shit totally fucking gasped in horror at chapter 1, check out why and see if you agree with me.

yes spoilers, about 2 hours into it:
Holy crap what a fucking terrible way to deliver news.

Dude comes rushing in and I'll paraphrase but this is pretty close to what he says to Flint.

"Oh man I just got back from over yonder and holy crap do I've got news for you. Okay do you want the good news or bad news first? No screw that I'll go with the good news first. Listen up I found this freaking sweet Drago tooth and I'm totally going to carve it into an uber weapon. Here take a look at it. Cool huh? Oh man but total bummer, Flint, I found it pierced through your wife's heart! Yeah she's pretty dead."

*Flint goes fucking beserk*

Seriously, I totally understand why Flint goes nuts after hearing THAT. Worst way to deliver the death of a family member EVER.

The game is pretty sweet so far.

I had a hard time getting it to work on my EZFlash V 3-in-1 slot 2 device. See the way playing Mother 3 works on that device is that it uses NOR mode because the PSRAM mode isn't big enough to handle the mighty 32 mb of Mother 3. Problem with NOR mode is that it takes a while to copy it over. That isn't terrible but what it does is basically store the entire GBA rom in there. Just to make sure Mother 3 would work on the device I had tried it out before the patch came out. So later I kept trying to run the patched version and it kept popping up in Japanese. It still had the unpatched version stuck inside the device and it thought the patched version I was trying to run from my Cyclo DS was the same rom (it technically is as far as the device is concerned) so it didn't bother transferring it over. So I had to start an application (GBA ExpLoader) and clear the NOR and transfer the patched version of Mother 3 over.

One more tip is that once you've put Mother 3 on a EZFlash V 3-in-1 you have to keep using that cartridge to load your save data. I put Mother 3 on another EZFlash V 3-in-1 I had and it couldn't load the save data without corrupting the data. I doubt this would affect many people but it's just one of the things I found out and should the situation come up that two people live in the same place they need to keep their EZFlash V 3-in-1 paired to their Cyclo DS or whatever slot 1 cartridge they use or they forfeit all their precious progress in the game.

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 21, 2008 05:58 AM

Just finished the game. Play time, probably around 24 hours or so. You should probably avoid the spoilers in this post if you haven't beaten it yet.

GENERAL
Spoiler:
Wow is this game bitter, pretty much every aspect of modern society is bashed by the end of it.

The chapter 4 time skip was actually pretty good, though, mostly because of the introduction of the DP system. It's actually a really telling moment when you look back over the first part of the game and realize that there was no money; people just gave you things.

BATTLES/DIFFICULTY
Spoiler:
I really like the combo system. Completely unnecessary to playing the game, but given a full combo adds another 1.5x your normal damage or so, it's very handy. Especially excellent are the hard battle songs that try to trip you up by changing the tempo or using complicated rhythms, I would have been very disappointed if it were just metronoming through the entire game. The Battle Memory item was awesome, of course because the enemy descriptions are great, but also because you can practice fight the enemies with it to nail down the combo timing.

I only ended up grinding in two places, and both were more for the heck of it than actual need, because there were high-XP enemies near hot springs. You really don't have to, because there are save points and recovery areas everywhere, and the enemies aren't that hard, especially using the combo system. Some of the bosses were actually pretty challenging though, starting mainly with the final two from chapter 5 (Li'l Miss Marshmallow and Mr. Genetor). They actually require a little more strategy than BASH-HEAL-BASH-HEAL-BASH-HEAL, and I like that. Granted that strategy is SHIELD-OFFENSE DOWN-DEFENSE UP-BASH-HEAL-BASH-HEAL-BASH-HEAL, but still.

I don't know the moonspeak, so I have no idea how faithful the translation is, but it seemed pretty decent quality overall. Especially good was some of the wordplay in names, I thought. You'd think some of the people and enemies were created by an English speaker: Fassad, Cattlesnake, Einswine, Navy SQUEAL, etc.

Humor was pretty spot on. It really does feel like Earthbound 2, which is probably the highest compliment that can be paid to these guys.

FLAMEBAIT
Spoiler:
I won't say the music for either game is better than the other, but Mother 3's soundtrack does compare very favorably. It sounds great, lots of excellent compositions around, good melodies, unholy , etc. I've never thought much of Shogo Sakai besides "one of those guys at HAL who isn't Jun Ishikawa," which is a big compliment in my book, but my respect is through the roof now from what he accomplished with this game.

FUCK YES DASHING SKIP SANDWICHES CAN GO TO HELL

Mother 3 feels a lot smaller than Earthbound. Granted, it's because you're on an island for most of the game, but there's a lot of revisiting areas, and it's shorter overall.

Then again, the game also feels a lot more focused than Earthbound. EB of course has the overarching THIS DUDE IS BAD WE MUST BE STOPPING OF HIM, but it does feel at time like you're just going to places and doing things, whereas Mother 3 piles on the emotional involvement in spades, whoa man I can't breathe here. But given both games happen in silly, silly places, Earthbound's approach to the story might have worked out better overall. I'm mixed about which one I like more.

24 hours is a bit short in this day and age. Exploring the world, talking with the people, and fighting the monsters, though, make it seem to last a lot longer than it does, because every hour is enjoyable (okay, the second to last chapter drags a bit). There's no filler, because everything that is filler just seems like another part of a damn enjoyable game. Awesome shit.

Also INTERESTING THING I found while playing but never actually went all the way with:

(chapter 7):
After you pick up the phone at the Osohe courtyard, you're supposed to go to the chimera lab/forest needle, then right after that there's Mole Cricket Hole/Snowtop Mountain/needle, and then you take the fridge to the graveyard, where the Mr. Saturn note leads to the underground highway and Saturn Valley/Fire Mountain/needle. Once you leave Osohe, though, you can go to the underground and Saturn Valley immediately, and so you can probably get Duster and pull the Fire Mountain needle before you find Kumatora (I wouldn't fight New Fassad without Kumatora, though, I'll be honest). I don't know if Mole Cricket Hole only opens up after you pull the forest needle or if you can do that out of order too.

Here are just some general thoughts I've had while playing the game:

Spoiler:
The first thing that really got me is that altough this is obviously a sequel of sorts to Earthbound, the world itself has a completely fresh feel to it, as do the characters. On that note, I was rather dissappointed when Salsa joined the group only to leave a few minutes later, as I was hoping that we would be able in the end to switch characters in and out, since each of them really had distinct abilities that would have been interesting to combine in different manners for different parts of the game.

As far as the length of the game goes, I can't help but feel it was really too short. Wether that is a good thing or a bad thing, I'm not sure, as the feeling of shortness is surely augmented by the fact that I had such a good time playing the game. However, the experience was in a way also lessened by it as it left me craving for more. I think a big part of this is the fact that the dungeons really were not challenging in any way as you always had a hot spring close enough that you could just use your psychic ability liberally and still be able to get to the boss with enough to defeat him.

The combo system I felt was interesting but unfortunately its purpose to me was defeated by the rolling HP meter, since you could get a lot more hits in for bigger damage while your HP was dropping than you would have by trying to combo on every attack. Also, if you wanted to get through an area without losing too much HP, rushing through the menu and text to get the fight rolling as quick as possible was the best way to go in most situations. In fact, the only part of the game where I actually was actively concentrating on combos was when I first got to play Duster and he could put most of the enemies to sleep easily.

My favorite moments of the game where numerous, but I'll state only a few here. The first was when I first met the magypsies. When I noticed that their names represented the musical ecclesiastic modes and that the missing one was Locria, I was quite amused. If you didn't already know this, the ecclesiastic modes are different scales that were used up until the baroque era of music and have been again since the end of the romantic period. The Locrian mode is the one where the tonic chord is diminished, and thus it is almost impossible to harmonise it in a classical fashion and get it to sound right. The Locrian mode was shuned by many a composer, and when it was used, concessions were made to make it sound right. Locria being Fassad just makes even more sense for that reason. The Ionian and Aeolian modes, incidentally, are known as the major scale and minor scales and thus are the most widely used of the modes. As such, Aeolia being the magypsies' leader and Ionia being the one we encounter most often are not coincidences either.

Another moment that really made me chuckle was when Wess told Duster to turn around because he had to do something secret to get the door to open and then started dancing. The interplay between the two characters at this point was quite charming.

Finally, a small but nonetheless funny line that I can't quite remember but that made me laugh was when your in New Pork City and this woman is looking at a totem pole and giving you her "deep" analysis of the aesthetics of the totem pole. The terms she used seemed quite symptomatic of many "artsy-farty" people, as we call 'em back home.

Oh, and Leder ringing his bell. That was probably the best and most surprising moment of all. It really made me listen to its ringing in a whole new way, and mysteriously made the game experience that much more involving.
