And in case you guys don't believe this is happening and dismiss an official Nintendo press release here it is from the pixel himself.

MyDesk

God damn, this is going to be great.

<3<3<3<3 u gech~ GO PLAY CAVE STORY

Yeah heard about this. Good reason to buy a Wii because hell, the game's fun.

Spoiler:
Wish I didn't trade my gun for a machine gun though.

FatsDomino Oct 3, 2008 10:07 PM

YOU CAN FEEL THE TRUTH. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED.

wenchwogg Oct 3, 2008 11:14 PM

I've heard nothing but good things about Cave Story. Not entirely sure what type of game it is, but I'll pick up it regardless. I have a bunch of Wii Points burning a hole in my pocket and nothing to purchase with them.

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 3, 2008 11:23 PM

I was just thinking today about how I should stop being lazy and find Cave Story for download somewhere. I played a good amount of it on my old computer, but deleted the installation and patch files so I couldn't transfer it over when the laptop started overheating. Thank you WiiWare, for allowing me to continue being a lazy bum.

FatsDomino Oct 3, 2008 11:27 PM

Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari), A Tribute Site

Has completely translated version and installer for both Windows and Mac. Enjoy.

The Plane Is A Tiger Oct 3, 2008 11:30 PM

Wow, that was fast. Still, now that this is announced for Wii I'm gonna hold off since I'll enjoy it a lot more playing with an actual controller. I've never gotten around to buying one for my PC since I don't bother with emulators. I'll grab that soundtrack zip file though.

Muzza Oct 3, 2008 11:51 PM

=O Best gaming news of the decade! (Except for the revelation of the original Cave Story, of course)

To celebrate, I shall share some Cave Story wallpapers! =3

Cave Story is essentially Super Metroid with animal friends.

It remains largely untainted by the furry community despite this - a testament to its glory.

Not as long as SEGA keeps churning out superfluous Sonic characters to keep them all distracted.

It's quite possible that it will come out on Monday. IGN has apparently been playing the Wiiware version.

They better not have changed the script from the fan translation too much. If Balrog doesn't say HUZZAH! I may have to fling shit at the wall.

IGN have some gamplay videos already.
The translation looks the same to me, but what's happened to the music?
It sounds all MIDI-ish
I hope it's not like that in the full release.

No. Hard Pass. Oct 4, 2008 01:57 AM

Cave Story is easily the best indie game ever made. Ever. In time.

You're right! =U The MIDI sound quality is awful! This had better just be the very early stages of the sound design. >=U

?

What strikes me as silly is that, like the above, a port of years old PC freeware is going to end up being one of the best titles released in months on the thing. I haven't quite made up my mind if that's hilarious or sad yet, though.

rRootage is also sick awesome, but I prefer Cave Story.

The_Griffin Oct 4, 2008 01:17 PM

Am I one of the only people that like the new music over the old one? >>;

On an unrelated note, how the fuck do I go to hard route instead of the easy route? First playthrough I did the hard route somehow but fucked up so I couldn't get the best ending, second playthrough the tow rope never appeared to start with and I gave up out of frustration, and now I'm on my third playthrough and really anxious about fucking up and missing out on the best ending AGAIN.

Paco Oct 4, 2008 01:31 PM

OH MY GOD CAVE STORY I FUCKING LOVE THAT GAME

I'm buying this the day it comes out.

Buizel Oct 4, 2008 03:19 PM

Oh my! I never knew about Cave Story until now. >_>

The only thing I hear from it (literally) is arrangement that people had done in Band Brothers. Usually I need to play the game before I could enjoy the music. Since I like the music I guess I'll be getting the game too. XD

Kesubei Oct 4, 2008 10:30 PM

I hope this comes out soon.

Also, I'm amused that there's no Japanese release date.

Philia Oct 4, 2008 11:24 PM

Finally, the guy who made this will get his money worth. I hope! Either way though, you can bet I'll contribute to this even though I played this on pc.

Dark Nation Oct 5, 2008 12:12 AM

Well I never played Cave Story, but I'm glad to see an indie developers getting more exposure for his work. If reviews are good then I'll pick it up :)

FatsDomino Oct 5, 2008 12:19 PM

It's Cave Story. There's your good review.

Heh. Well I meant the WiiWare conversion. Some games don't do too well when ported over to new platforms.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...og_Genesis.jpg

FatsDomino Oct 5, 2008 12:35 PM

GAME FEATURES:
- offers standard definition and Wii-exclusive progressive (480p) graphics
- 4:3 and 16:9 resolution support
- new character designs by creator/designer, Daisuke Amaya (Pixel)
- 10 unique weapons to find and upgrade
- Over 20 boss battles through Mimiga Island
- 15 levels to explore in the vast world
- Classic Controller support
- Three unique endings
- WiiWare version developed by Nicalis

The only troubling thing at the moment is the music and possibly some of the translation but that remains to be seen in the final version which while said to be a Holiday release in the Nintendo press release is being listed as early 2009 everywhere else.

Indygames.com leads me to a placeholder website. Did they go down?

edit: Nifflas is in Nicalis? Fucking hell this is going to be the most awesome port of an indie game ever.

Nintendo won the console war, everyone else can go home now.

Kanji Oct 5, 2008 06:57 PM

Out of left field news, but hell-fucking-YES. I've always wanted to pay for Cave Story, or give back to Pixel in a way that equals the undying awesome he bestowed upon me with his free game. I guess I'll settle for the former for now, assuming some money trickles into his hands eventually.

Exposure for this game is slowly climbing, but I don't think it can ever have enough. This is an interesting console to port the game to, but I guess it really is the best choice. Hopefully, those retro game addicts that bought into Mega Man 9 find solace in Cave Story as well.

That's what I was trying to look for actually, but the website wasn't working.

However Indiegames.com does work, so please Acer, what is Nifflas' involvement with 'CaveWii'? :)

Sarag Oct 5, 2008 08:56 PM

oh I edited my post but I heard from other places that Nifflas is part of the port team.

Dark Nation Oct 5, 2008 09:12 PM

Wow, that is awesome news.

Now they just need to a Knytt WiiWare / Live Arcade update and I can die happyn

So any word on pricing, or was it mentioned already?

lol sorry I meant indiegames.com but uh unconsciously my love for Indy took over

I have no idea what Nifflas is doing particularly for this but apparently Wiiware developers have some sort of circle and have known about this port for a while now. Or at least that's what Luc Bernard, the creator of Eternity's Child, makes me want to think.

WolfDemon Oct 5, 2008 11:04 PM

Hot damn. Looks like I'll finally have a reason to buy some Wii Points.

I've still only played through the game once, so this'll give me a reason to pick it up again, other than because it's awesome.

There is a new interview on Gonintendo:

Quote:

RMC: What can we look forward to as far as music? Will the old songs be retained, or will there be something else?

TR: The WiiWare version of Cave Story features all-new music rearranged by Yann van der Cruyssen. He’s worked with Nicklas (Nygren) in the past and we’ve really liked working with him. We’ve paid very close attention to stay as faithful as possible to the original music. Each track is passed off while in-progress state to Amaya so that he can review and approve it.

Yes, the old music and graphics will both be retained via a switch. You’ll also be able to mix-and-match audio and visuals. So, if you like the old art and new music, or vice versa, you can do it. Cave Story has a huge fanbase, we’re aware of that and want to make sure that it’s true to what they expect and Pixel-approved. If they don’t like the new art or music, we won’t be offended and they can play the game in its original state.
Also, here is the official site, but it's not open yet.

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 08:59 AM

Okay, that's excellent. I'm glad they're giving us so many options. We all win! =)))

wvlfpvp Oct 6, 2008 10:00 AM

So . . . if it supports the classic controller, does that mean it supports GCN controller, too? Cuz this determines when I will be able to MUST BUY MUST PLAY

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 10:33 AM

Cave Story ought to work on all controllers. The game didn't really require that many buttons. I understand that weapon switching might be a bit difficult on just a wiimote but for the rest of the controls you're covered. Considering they seem to be going all out for options you are probably assured a control scheme for the GameCube controller.

wvlfpvp Oct 6, 2008 08:15 PM

Waggle to change weapons, duh.

FatsDomino Oct 6, 2008 10:28 PM

lol what fun that would be

Anywho the website is up and running and despite using the crappy midi infused new music remix stuff it's very well done with levels and enemies being very animated.

Cave Story for WiiWare

And Nicalis has a blog up as well. Maybe this'll become our new JAPAN TIME. =)))

http://nicalis.com/blog/

I'd say this is going to be very good. I wonder when they'll be releasing it.

NovaX Oct 10, 2008 10:22 PM

A comparison of what the Wii version sprites will look like against the originals.

http://nicalis.com/blog/images/cs_toroko_compare.png

Muzza Oct 10, 2008 10:27 PM

...? *scutinises*

I don't think I like the change that much. Looks a bit finicky and unnecessary. A large part of the game's charm is held within those simplistic sprites! Oh well, it could be much worse, so I'm reasonably pleased.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 15, 2008 05:10 AM

I like the new sprites, they are still spritey sprite charming and none of that upscaled blurry filter stuff they usually do with "enhanced" graphics. Plus there's the option to use the originals anyway so no one should complain.

Gametrailers has some gameplay handcam footage with awful sound. I hope the text sound fx isn't really quite that loud.

Quote:

Gametrailers has some gameplay footage up. They put up a bumper stating that the artwork is work-in-progress. The music is work-in-progress, too. There was also a strange bug where the music was playing at about 17-percent slower than it should. The sound effects haven’t been balanced and are WAAAAAY too loud in the footage you see here. Did I mention the music and audio aren’t complete? We promise the sound effects won’t make anyone’s ears bleed.

FatsDomino Oct 15, 2008 08:35 AM

I enjoyed the footage and interview. The music is awful Work In Progress shit. I hope they use resampled instruments instead of that dreadful midi or I'm switching back to the original music with a quickness. I'm liking the update to the graphics though. I can get used to the font but I hope the translation remains faithful.

wvlfpvp Oct 15, 2008 08:46 AM

Yes. Because we all live in Britain, and knew about computers like that back in the nineties.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Oct 15, 2008 08:49 AM

It was, to be fair, a pretty niche market.

wvlfpvp Oct 16, 2008 09:16 PM

FatsDomino Oct 16, 2008 09:41 PM
